Question from left field

Hello, all. I'm sorry to spam the whole dev list with this, but I'm not sure how else to handle the situation. I'm not a programmer; I'm an artist (who has done a little bit of C++/C# programming.) My issue is that my workflow is dependent upon an interface that disappeared after mid-2014. So I've been running 0.48.5 since then. The interface is the Pen Tool, Spiro Spline setting. The essential interface is *click* for corner node, *drag* for smooth node. This workflow is extremely intuitive - so much so that it's proven more valuable to me than the numerous improvements made to Inkscape since 2014. With the release of 1.0, I thought I'd investigate making local builds and seeing whether I could modify my local source to behave like 0.48.5 with the Pen Tool. (Thanks to the Wiki instructions, I'm successfully compiling 1.0 locally!) What I've found, of course, is that everything's different. Where 0.48.5 had enum { SP_PEN_CONTEXT_MODE_CLICK, SP_PEN_CONTEXT_MODE_DRAG }; ...1.0 has: void _bsplineSpiro(bool shift); //creates a node in bspline or spiro modes ... void _bsplineSpiroStartAnchor(bool shift); //continues the existing curve with the union node in bspline or spiro modes So the shift modifier (as opposed to still mouseup vs. drag + mouseup) has permeated, and click/drag distinctions are discarded. My question is this: How would someone (particularly a non-programmer) approach re-implementing click/drag in the Pen Tool? Keep in mind, I'm not trying to disrupt the official source or product; I just need to make local builds for my own use. And it's not an emergency - 0.48.5 does everything I require, and if need be I can just stick with that. However, if there's a way to get the old Pen interface with all the 1.0 improvements, I'd like to try. Thanks, Erik Robson

Hi all developers, during recent discussions, we have been pondering the idea of regular dev meetings, and discussing them again on the live today, we are suggesting to hold them every eight days (so that if someone has an agenda problem with a day of the week, it'll still be okay for most of the meetings) . The idea for these meetings would be to talk about the development of Inkscape code informally, discuss bug reports we have been working on, recently raised regressions, etc, so that we could help one another if needed and get a wider sense of who is working on what area, and how things are progressing overall with features or releases in mind. Hi all, this is a short "what do you think about this?" message about gitlab. Current state of things : we currently use gitlab on their "gold" plan which does include proprietary extensions to the free software gitlab core (those features are scoped labels, multiple assignees, related issues (/duplicates), multiple issues boards, exceptions to protected branches, push rules, merge approvals). By "just asking", we could also have access to group-level gold features, such as Epics which are like meta-issues to track releases or big feature plans ( https://docs.gitlab.com/ee/user/group/epics/ ) and Group milestones (instead of having per-project milestones) The question is simple : should we ? (Pro : we get access to it; Cons : it's asking to use proprietary features, which is not something we usually do) -- Marc

Hi, I'm currently writing an import filter to import free flow pdf text into Scribus for editing but i'm aware that there's no free pdf editor worth it's salt because pdf is patent encumbered. as a result all pdf editors that let you edit free flow pdf text are quite expensive and the free versions often limited by watermarks. anyhow, i hope i've avoided any patent issues as layout and fonts used bare no resemblance to anything pdf uses as I aggregate all the text and use Scribus's quite advanced layout engine to do the bulk of the heavy lifting with some vaguely intelligent aggregation code to aggregate the text in the filter. anyhow, can anyone give me a heads up on pdf and patents?

bit of an update on svg animation

- hi everyone - I've been looking at animation support and evaluating the competition. also I found a javascript implementation of the web animations api which may be the animation engine to support as it's getting native support in browsers. that doesn't limit us by not allowing support for snap or GSAP on top of this. web animations API works with css and svg and provides interfaces to animation, keyframes and timelines. - - https://github.com/web-animations/web-animations-js <https://github.com/web-animations/web-animations-js> github.com *web-animations/web-animations-js* <https://github.com/web-animations/web-animations-js> JavaScript implementation of the Web Animations API - web-animations/web-animations-js - SVGator, a commercial svg animator supports javascript (using it's custom engine) or css - I still wouldn't suggest supporting any old javascript, but a cut down version of javascript where complex functions get replaced with stubs that return some default value and the code can be evaluated to get the animation (limited by what javascript functionality is implemented) and property settings for the animation can be traced. I would do this roughly by using the built in parser in the javascript engine to calculate animation settings to be presented in the UI. the commercial svg animation tool SVGator supports javascript and css. it doesn't allow the javascript to be modified in the application, I haven't tried importing and svg file with modified javascript. it may also be a good idea to support snap or GSAP ontop of this, on the other hand, they may become obsolete as web animation s API gets full support and people start writing functions for it such as the morph one found here https://coherent-labs.com/Documentation/cpp-gameface/d1/dea/shape_morphing.… - - for instance, simple loops may be supported, but more complex(that use the result of a function call to determine the loop[ conditions) ones may be too complex to support rationally - Doing this loses nothing as the animation will still run in a browser, but Inkscape may only support animations with complex functionality partitioning - Accurate animation playback can still be supported by executing the javascipt but I would limit imports to trusted javascript and not any old javascript for reasons of side effects and security. there are already shims that implement SMIL in javascript, and assuming they allow you to position the timeline and query keyframes and object attributes they should allow for a relatively straight forward SMIL implementation so long as javascript is supported. this proposal sees inkscape supporting SMIL, CSS and javascript. the Web Animations API implementation should allow for the support of CSS without any javascript but can still be used for the actual process of animating and setting the timeline position. at the moment I'm still working on importing text from pdf files in scribus. I have most of the functionality already implemented for this out just requires a bit of polish. to do that I'm going to refactor the code to use a simple framework that should make the code a lot cleaner, be faster and support all the features for the Polish needed to have a decent implementation.

Hello, I recently filed a pull request and was pointed out to * increase the timeout in "Settings => CI/CD => General Pipelines => Timeout" to 3h * Check the "Allow commits from members who can merge to the target branch" in the pull request settings. I suggest to add a section in "Getting Started with Inkscape Development" on the homepage describing the correct settings and maybe also how to create a fork on gitlab (or just link the gitlab documentation). Inkscape Hackfest 2020

Dear Inkscape developers and users, I've been thinking about how best we can host a hackfest for 2020 given all the restrictions. After talking with multiple people, I've decided that the best format for an online hackfest is to have one spread out over the summer. So may I present to everyone the Summer of Hackfest: https://gitlab.com/inkscape/vectors/general/-/issues/161 This gitlab issue is just for organising people's preferences, and thoughts. Once I have times confirmed, I'm going to write everything in the regular hackfest wiki page for everyone. So. The idea here is to take advantage of the online nature of this year's hackfest activity and allow people more breathing room between sessions. Each week I'll be hosting a video chat which you will be free to join and just hang out in and where hopefully some of the important topics will happen once per week. No grueling commitment, no big block of time, just a predictable schedule of lovely inkscape topics which will be publisised to get more people involved than ever before. chrome's support for modifying web animations api in it's developers console.

Chrome seems to do a reasonable job of capturing and modifying web animations API in JavaScript. Its not so hot, however, when it comes to elements that have animations that are programmatically generated, it doesn't even group them all together and identify the source of programmatic generation, which in many cases is just a simple trace of the code. I dare say it could do better than just passively listening out for animation events and actually infer many of the from the source documents.

[GSoC Paths] Status update

Hi everyone, I would like to provide a status update on the Path Library Improvement project. Since this is my first report to the list (the last one wasn't public), I'd like to discuss everything done so far. This report is huge and quite technical, so if you want a short version, it is this: "I have successfully written a relatively short piece of code that creates simplification results totally identical to the livarot version. The algorithm is the same as livarot and is nearly as fast. I'm about to start cleaning it, documenting it and integrating it with simplify, lpe-simplify and pencil tool. This will be done within the next two days." Now the detailed version: According to the original schedule, I was supposed to work on the Path Simplification feature and that is what I have been doing. I started with writing some boilerplate code that will allow me to trigger my own Path Simplification code in Inkscape. This is so that I can compare its results with livarot based simplification quickly. I started exploring the simplification algorithm of lightvarot and wrote some path flattening (the process of approximating a path by line segments) myself. I integrated these in Inkscape and the algorithm produced pretty satisfying results but it was too slow. In a "Release" build, the performance might be okay for a "Path > Simplify" but would do pretty bad in live path effects. For what it's worth, I also created an animation explaining this algorithm. You can find it here: https://moazin.github.io/simplification-algos.html Disappointed by its performance, I replaced the main part of the algorithm with its equivalent from livarot (that's explained in the link attached under the title "Livarot / Simplifying the curve". The performance improved but there were significant differences between the results. I had a choice here, I could either just rewrite a cleaner version of livarot's code or understand what's causing the differences and fix those. I chose to do the latter. I started following the procedure "draw paths -> trigger both algorithms -> debug both simultaneously -> understand and fix the differences -> repeat". Going down this route, I understood almost all the parts of livarot and was even able to discover/fix bugs in both livarot and lightvarot. Here are the reasons behind the differences: 1. The codes for flattening the paths were different so obviously there were differences in the results. I simply implemented livarot's algorithm for splitting cubic beziers to solve this problem. 2. There is an iteration of Newton-Raphson method. (I'll probably add what this iteration is and what it does in the link attached above soon, it's mostly math stuff). I suspect that the code for this iteration in lightvarot is mathematically incorrect, so I fixed it. I will do the derivation again to be sure if it's really a bug though. Anyways, I fixed it by replacing the constants from my derivation (which are identical to the livarot version). 3. There is a special portion in livarot code which fixes what livarot calls the "splotch" problem. When the number of points you're fitting are few, you can sometimes get a fit which fits the points correctly but overall doesn't fit the polyline properly. There is some special code that calculates error differently to take into account this situation and thereby avoid bad fits. My code was missing this code, so I wrote it. 4. There is a slight optimization in livarot that reuses some calculations and I suspect it compromises on the accuracy of the fits. I need to investigate more to be sure. I fixed it in livarot by simply using the non-optimized version. (There are two `AttemptSimplify`) 5. There were some silly bugs in livarot's non-optimized `AttemptSimplify`. A minus was replaced by a plus and a weight factor was commented. Fixed both of those on the livarot side. After doing all of these changes, both versions are producing totally identical results. The computation time is also mostly identical. There is a very minor difference in the flattening part which I'm working on. The code can be found at: https://gitlab.com/moazin/inkscape/-/tree/integrating-livarot-low-redesign My code lives in `src/path/PathSimplifier(.h/.cpp)` and `src/path/PathFlattener(.h/.cpp)`. The temporary verb "Path > MyOperation" triggers code in `src/path/path-myoperation(.h/.cpp)`. The commit history is pretty much garbage since I have been experimenting a lot. Over the weekend I'll be cleaning this code, documenting it properly and integrating it in lpe-simplify and the pencil tool. I'll add the final resulting code "cleanly" on a fresh branch. An interesting part of this project is the "design" of whatever code I write. But I think it's too early for me to start thinking about it because as I move towards Boolean Operations, a lot of new things will be discovered and whatever "design" I decide on would change. C++ & Gtk dependencies

Hi All, I just wanted to follow up a couple of recent discussions on our build dependencies. 1. There was some talk of moving to C++17. Tav - I think you were going ahead with a dependency bump in master? Are we still doing this, or did we find any issues? 2. Are we OK to bump to Gtk+ 3.24? AFAIK this is the final Gtk+ 3 version so would be a good stable target for Inkscape 1.1. The only issue would be RHEL/CentOS/Debian LTS are stuck on an older version. My feeling about this kind of thing is that we keep Inkscape 1.0.* as our LTS and push ahead with a dependency bump in master. Best wishes, Alex

Getting error status/messages for Inkscape actions (when called via activate_action)

Hello everyone, is there a possibility to get some error status and/or error messages when executing actions via, e.g., activate_action()? I had a look at the glibmm documentation but couldn't find anything regarding this topic. I've just included executing Inkscape actions from the internal Python interpreter feature I'm porting to the current master branch (https://gitlab.com/wiesi/inkscape/-/tree/python-internal-1) and it would be nice (maybe even mandatory) for the Python user to get some feedback whether an action was successful and a meaningful error message if not. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Does glibmm have some infrastructure for this task that I'm just unable to find or does it really require some extended surgery? Thanks, Thomas

Web development feature : SVG to HTML

Dear developers, Firstly awesome awesome software. I used to use AI but as soon as I saw Inkscape, switched to this despite some change in familiarity. I will always switch from proprietary to libre tool wherever possible. I request you to add a feature where the SVGs would directly export as HTML or HTML+CSS code. [feature] Export PNG / bulk generation

Hello, In my use of Inkscape, I use the "export png image" feature from the vector drawing to a specific size. However, I systematically use the generation multiple times because I work with standardized sizes. I use it on my website to pick the smallest appropriate image. I am thinking of evolving the export feature to have predefined sizes and being capable of generating all the images at once. For instance, by selecting a generation profile and a destination folder. need help implementing command line args

Hi, For a personal project I'm trying to add the advanced png export options as commandline args. I've got most of it working, but am now getting blocked by a weird issue when trying to use 0 (zero) as an input value for an OPTION_TYPE_INT argument. If the value is zero, the argument doesn't get added to the options VariantDict (I check this in inkscape-application.cpp around line 1500). If i use any other int value it does get passed along. The reason this is causing me problems is, I add options like the the antialiasing settings and those are based on zero-indexed enums, but don't use 0 as a default. This means I can't just set default value to zero in the InkFileExportCmd struct (as happens for margin ). Hopefully this makes sense to someone here. My background isn't cpp so I'm probably missing something simple (although I did briefly go over the glib source code as well lol). If I can get something working I'll contribute of course. find some discussion about what's required to implement animation in different ways.. it all boiled down to either writing a bespoke animation engine or writing an SVG DOM it turned out that the SVG DOM is a lot smaller and easier to implement than expected. this makes thew javascript path viable and gives a usable industry-standard API for third parties to use. The downside are that you have to implement an animation engine, they are already available for js and SMIL complete and tested of you take the javascript path but once a bespoke animation engine has been created it can also be used for CSS another downside when compared to js is that SMIL isn't as feature-rich. it's also going to be fun reflecting changes of object details on the canvas with each animation in it own little thread and sometimes having keyframes sometimes not. There's little difference in all the work to hook up the GUI between js and SMIL, they support the same features and activities in general. looking at the two roadmaps the traid off is the difficulty parsing javascript to extract the details of the animation vs the mission of implementing a bespoke animation engine. the javascript path also gives you both SMIL and javascript with little extra effort. Nothing is lost if the javascript in a file can't be parsed sufficiently well as inkscape would revert back to it's old self, with animation disabled, and just be an SVG editor. The javascript could also be edited in a code editor in inkscape and the play feature still available to play the animations, the javascript code editor could also have features designed for editing animation information meaning inkscape would still be better than nothing for js animation it just would have full GUI integration. Spidermonkey doesn't seem too hard to integrate, creating a shim for a javascript a library that provides an API for Inkscape hopefully shouldn't be too tricky and possible with a few precompiler directives in the code and a script https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Projects/SpiderMonkey/How_… Spidermonkey looks a little short on documentation especially when it comes to C/JaverScript interoperability. V8 maybe seems a little trickier to embed, only a little not a great deal but has good, clear documentation. it is however C++ base, so it how well that mixes with Inkscape's choice of c https://chromium.googlesource.com/v8/v8/+/branch-heads/6.8/samples/hello-wo… do it's going to take some searching for documentation and examples of wrapping up c for javascript and javascript for c to determine which one will embed the nicest based on hope Inkscape's SPI is implemented and also look at debugging support and any other featurtes

I'm currently migrating the PaintSelector and friends to C++ so I'd prefer to kill the old dialog at this stage rather than maintain it! AV

Inkscape 1.0 - Icon size woes.

All, I have loaded Inkscape 1.0 both on windows and on Linux (Arch). I have both on my laptop. The biggest problem is that toolbars that used to fit properly now spill-over into elipsized menus and the spacing between the rulers and icons are now double what it was before. In 92.5 the interface showed 24 icons on the vertical toolbars. In 1.0 only 17 are visible. (despite all icons sizes being set to "smaller" in preferences) On Arch I have the Adwaita icon them (about all that is available anymore). On Windows I guess it comes with the icons. Both interfaces are almost identical in the size growth of the icon size and the ruler-to-iconbar spacing. This isn't a problem unique to Inkscape. All apps making the Gtk+2 to Gtk+3 jump have faced the issue. Gimp, Mozilla, Geany, etc.. and most have found a way to solve the problem. I know it is frustrating for you as well, but for small screens like laptops -- it is a big issue. css doesn't provide a solution a global solution, despite the Gtk+3 documentation pointing in that direction with https://developer.gnome.org/gtk3/stable/GtkToolbar.html Searching, there are old solutions suggesting entries in ~/.config/gtk-3.0/setting.ini similar to: gtk-icon-sizes = panel-menu=16,16:panel=16,16:gtk-menu=16,16:gtk-large-toolbar=16,16:gtk-small-toolbar=16,16:gtk-button=16,16 Gimp 2.10 has somehow solved this issue so that interface is comparable to Gtk+2 and will still allow pickup of the Gtk+2 themes. I'm not sure how they did it. Whether they wrote a partial theme to handle it or what. I'll keep searching and I'll keep working with the interface to see if I can find something that can work. The actual solution needs to come from the gnome developers of Gtk+3 providing programatic control of the toolbar icon sizes rather than leaving them to be overridden by the themes. The fact that Gtk+3 was such a moving target for so long and the fact toolbar icon size has gone unaddressed this long is a shame. You all have put so much good work into Inkscape for the 1.0 release, it must be really frustrating that the new Gtk+ version doesn't provide near the polished look that Gtk+2 provided off the shelf. -- David C. Need help with random transform in cache

Hi all. I need help with this about random scaling of cached elements to document units. In the function "scheduleTransform" in "src/display/drawing- item.cpp:603" I recive randomly not scale/document scale affine in "ctm_change" var. Can anyone give a look I spend 2 days on it without result... to me is a 1.0 blocker. Asume you have this conditions to test: * Inkscape with cache enabled (size>0) * Document units diferent than pixels Testing: * Output the affine "ctm_change" prefiously mentioned. * Open inkscape. * Draw a bigest circle that cover your screen. * Create multiple text with click + type some leters as fast you can over the circle. When the circle become a box, see the output and you discober there is a diferent scaling with the doc scale, normaly is 0 scale. Thanks so much for get into, Jabier.

Hi, is there any ongoing projects with goal of making inkscape also as modular UX/UI design tool ?

in my search for foss design tool for UX/UI, Flow design and organization, so far only very few are available, out of that only few seems to be working (with some hardwork). but most of them are proprietary solutions or else oriented towards it. afaik, inkscape has better design features than any other design tool out there ... however it lacks a few features to make it as a design tool for any front end designer. those are : 1. svg to code conversion 2. library management for projects 3. parametric design convention 4. standard templates 5. animation if those are made available through python, then it will become invincible, and i dont know about akira so far, tried but failed to build several times in this year. like this : 1. select a target device, 2. choose a template dimension, 3. make flow for ux (from synthesized user flow in ux design with api), 4. collect/make icons, fonts, color palettes, 5. get standard components for the chosen device, 6. integrate together activity by activity in each discrete flow part of the 3 step. 7. convert every single ui from step 6 to css or android xml so that the layers, objects can be reused in Qt, Android, React. This would definitely give free software projects an upper hand among the developer community like Fdroid, and other web based projects. However some very few projects are avaible in FOSS with such ideas, are no where near to inkscapes design versality. regards cosmobird.

Inkscape devs, I was looking though the 1.0 Beta Release Notes, and came across screenshots showing the new Gtk+3 interface. I wanted to drop a note in the talk (discussion) section related to the need to control icon size as the current Gtk+3 icons take up roughly 200% of the equivalent Gtk+2 icons. Specifically looking at: https://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php?title=File:Origin_in_upper_left_pa… This has been a huge problem for all applications that have attempted the Gtk+2 to Gtk+3 switch. As a result of the toolkit change, many of the icon bars that neatly fit in the space available on a laptop, now spill over into elipseized button menus and the actual drawing screen real-estate is reduced dramatically. Gimp has managed a reasonable balance where many other major apps and editors have failed. I would like to follow and contribute to the discussion on the upcoming 1.0 beta release on the wiki and would therefore request a wiki account (I'm a real breathing human and not a spam bot or spammer) Thanks. -- David C. GSoC proposal for Path Library Improvement

Hi everyone, I am Moazin, a BS student at Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences and I am applying for Google Summer of Code 2020. I want to work on the Path Library Improvement project. Inkscape relies on two libraries for its geometry related operations. One is *lib2geom* which was designed specially for Inkscape and the other is *livarot*, a library written in somewhere in 2003 that has some unique features which *lib2geom* doesn't have. Features such as: path simplification, line scanning (flowing text), path offset/Inset, boolean operations and some modes of Tweak Tool. While *livarot* is functionally good, it's quite outdated. It was written long ago and it's extremely hard to understand it or maintain it. The goal of this project is to implement all of these features either in *lib2geom* or outside it while using *lib2geom's* features as much as possible. GSoC proposal for GPU rendering using Pathfinder

Hello everyone! Some of you may know me from the IRC channel as linkmauve, this year I’m applying for the Google Summer of Code! I’m a computer science student from France, and I’ve been interested in computer graphics for a long while. I started quite a few years ago when I was working on emulators (such as Citra and Dolphin), I eventually wrote a shader compiler for running 3DS graphics on ARM processors, tried my hand at the demoscene, and wrote the 3D transitions in LibreOffice Impress. But now I want to bring that knowledge to more useful projects, from which a lot of artists who use them every day could benefit. My goal is to bring GPU rendering to Inkscape, in a way that is both portable, performant, maintainable, and understandable by future maintainers. In order to do that, I suggest to use Pathfinder, a library Mozilla is working on, for canvas and SVG rendering, so that efforts improving it can be pooled between the two organisations. Hello! My name is Thu Vu and I’m a sophomore studying Computer Science from the University of Texas at Dallas. I have originally first heard of Inkscape when I was around 14 when I was interested in creating vector art and various graphic art pieces. I have heard several artists use it to create wonderful art pieces that have inspired me. Since I have personally used Inkscape before I would have some background insight from a user’s perspective. This would give me an advantage in the knowledge of what a user would like to be implemented or simplified for better user experience when using Inkscape. I have not worked on any open-source projects before, but in joining GSoC’20, it would help me give me first-hand experience of what it is like to work on projects such as that. My main technical skills consisted of C++ and Java as well as HTML, CSS, some JavaScript for web design and development. I also have additional knowledge of working in a UNIX/Linux environment. For project proposals, I’m interested in the Better CSS Style Sheet Support, Refactoring, and Path Library Improvements projects. In all honesty, it gives me great excitement to be possibly working on an Inkscape project from a different perspective besides a user standpoint. I look forward to learning a lot in any of these projects. Also, considering this would be the first time I am applying to GSoC as well as work on an open-source project, I would appreciate any advice on the application process and any tips going forward. Introducing myself and my GSOC Proposal/Application: UI-Free Inkscape

Hi dear Inkscape Developer Community, I want to submit a proposal for the "UI-Free Inkscape" project idea of this year's Google Summer of Code. Right now, I am doing a sabbatical (since November 2019) and am enrolled at the Vienna University of Technology. Before that, I was working as a Software Developer for several years mostly on graphics related software (Ogre3D, Unity3D, Augmented Reality Apps, Medical Image Processing, etc.). I really like open-source software, was able to do some small contributions to projects like Emscripten, Ogre3D, and several JavaScript projects. I think the GSOC program is an awesome opportunity to work fulltime on Open Source Software, like yours. Due to the current pandemic situation, I hand to do re-organize and partly reschedule my Coding Tour I was already starting in the US for the next couple of weeks. This is the reason for my "last-minute" application. Fortunately, I am able to continue the tour online, here from Austria. Anyway, even though I am behind schedule for my GSOC proposal I hope that I will be able to submit a successful application to you and show you that I am able to succeed in making a UI-Free Inkscape version or at least being able to move this ongoing effort a huge step forward. *The "two patches" rule is a great idea, but as I am a bit late in the application process I wanted to ask if it is required to submit them before the upcoming proposal deadline tomorrow?* I definitely will be able to send them within the next 1-2 weeks, it would be great if that would not be a blocker for my proposal (at least not right now). The reason why I chose the "UI-Free Inkscape" project idea is because I am a huge fan of automating things, and I really like the idea of being able to use Inkscape for several tasks on a server, or in the backend of an application. I think this might increase the usage of Inkscape even more. I saw that this idea is already an ongoing task. It is probably hard to say how much effort there is left, and how likely it is to complete the task within the GSOC time. On the other hand, if the task can not be completed within the time of GSOC, it should be possible to move it a substantial step forward. My idea would be to iterate in small steps and frequently submit those parts for which I was able to remove the UI dependency for review. There is already a lot of valuable information regarding the GSOC process on the Inkscape wiki, still,* I would like to ask if you have any suggestions, tips and/or tricks for my proposal submission?* Thanks in advance for your support, Harald

Hello there, I'm Aadhish Sriram, student studying my second year of college majored in Computer Science and Engineering at SASTRA University, Tamil Nadu, India. I'm aspiring Web Developer, mostly self taught and an Open Source Enthusiast. I'm well versed in C/C++, ES6+ Javascript and React and the tools I mostly use are open sourced ones. I've known about Open Source in my high school days but I never known someone like us contributed to it, not until last Hacktoberfest. I've been introduced to a new perspective of open source where I can contribute to the tools or applications that I use everyday. I couldn't participate in last year Hacktoberfest. I made pact to myself that I would have at least one contribution in next year. Ever since that all my projects are open sourced and available in Github. Now I'm increasing my skills in web development (increasing my knowledge in existing tools), improving my portfolio and recently started contributing to Inkscape and planning to contribute in Godot and Blender (All are made in *C/C++* which is a language I love). My project idea is UI-Free Inkscape project and maybe implement some more actions or verbs related to UI-Free project. <#use-cases>Use Cases Some of the use cases of the project: - A user can queue bulk rendering of his vectors in a render farm or an GPU optimized server. - A professional graphic designer could queue his/her vector drawing to render in his/her organization's server for rendering. - A user or graphic designer could draw his entire SVG using command lines and not worry about disk space comes with graphical dependency.

Hi there, With this year's Google Summer of Code upon us I wanted to introduce myself and share some ideas I have to make Inkscape even better. My Name is Usama Ahmed and I'm from Pakistan. Currently I'm doing my undergraduate degree in Computer Science from The National University of Science and Technology in Islamabad. My interest in programming developed about 8 years ago when I started working on apps and websites. At that time I also found out about Inkscape as a free tool to work with graphics and it blew my mind that I could achieve the same things with open source software that I would get from other paid software which I could not afford. I always had an interest in design and Inkscape helped me add another dimension to my work. I learned UI/UX design on it and later began using it to make posters which included artwork I made using code, fusing my interests in coding and design into one. Now I have an opportunity to give back to the Inkscape community as I believe I have developed the technical skills to start making contributions to the project. Below I discuss one features I think would make Inkscape better. Currently Inkscape doesn't have a Perspective Grid System which would let designers have guides on the screen to easily draw realistic 3-D Designs. I recently felt this difficulty when I wanted to design a logo which involved some perspective geometry. We can develop a way for designers to place a 1, 2 or 3 point perspective grid on the screen and be able to change different parameters associated with such grids such as the vanishing points and the granularity of the grid. I have attached a rough sketch of what this might look like. Furthermore, we can have a feature where a designer can have his designs "snap" to different perspectives. To achieve something like this right now we have to skew the drawing which can be difficult. Adobe Illustrator has a feature similar to this https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/perspective-grid.html. Another cool feature along these lines would be a system to extract perspective lines from raster images by doing edge detection and finding vanishing points. This would let designers use reference photos to create 3-D illustrations easily. I would love to work on Inkscape during Google Summer of Code. Hi everyone, I am about to update the "getting started" instructions for new developers: https://inkscape.org/develop/getting-started/ If you have any further suggestions, feel free to answer. I'd like to consolidate all changes into one big edit because every change needs to be translated. Here's my list of changes: - git SSH -> change to HTTPS (as discussed a few months ago) - "Install build dependencies": replace old "apt-get" instructions with the new script from inkscape-ci-docker. Download and run the script to install all requirements: wget -v https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape-ci-docker/raw/master/install_dependenc… -O install_dependencies.sh bash install_dependencies.sh --recommended - "/usr in the example" -> "in the example, it is installed in inst/ inside the source folder" - "Versions <= 0.92" -> remove from tutorial, move to Wiki remove mentioning of autotools, as CMake is now the default - do not mark optional arguments with "[ ]" so that copy-paste into the shell works. Also, omitting some of these arguments (e.g. ccache) will horribly slow down compilation, so they aren't truly optional. Previously, these formats were (also) handled via extensions, and uniconvertor was required for it to work. A Big thank you from a long time inkscape user

Hi Everyone, I would like to thank everyone for the hard work you all had during the past 10 years or so. I am an inkscape user since 2007 and I couldn't be more satisfied. This project came such a long way both in the application and in the team structure. I remember we were using mailing lists in source forge. And when our website was not using Django. What makes me the happier is to see that the application now have layers, floating panels, dark theme (spoiler for 1.0 version!), more features, more languages, and it runs on Mac without X11! I got really surprised when I realized that a lot of the feature requests were accepted and even implemented in the project. So thank you very much for caring. And for reaching out. I still feel I don't have a lot of knowledge on the program (yes, this is how I feel) and my time is limited, just like anybody else, but I will do my best to commit to help onboard more users whenever possible. Possible bug in Inkscape 0.92 Export Plot extension

Hi folks I'm emailing the developer list to see if I need to submit a bug report for an issue I haven't been able to resolve through the User Forum. I am using Inkscape 0.92 on Ubuntu 18.04.3 to cut vinyl using a Liyu SC631 cutter, connected using a USB port. Before I updated to Ubuntu 18.04.3 I used Inkcut without any problems. I understand that Inkcut is now deprecated so I have been trying to use the Export/Plot extension instead. The issue is that when I do this the cutter cuts an extra, unwanted, line direct from the last point of the drawing back to the origin, spoiling the item being cut. The problem does not occur when I use Inkcut. Is this a case of "operator error", in which case what am I doing wrong, or is it a bug which I need to report? Any replies gratefully received. Gareth

Inkscape shape to path algorithm development

Happy Holidays everyone! I had lunch with one of the Fontforge developers the other day, Skef Iterum. He's been working on improvements to their glyph outline stroking support, including some algorithmic work that he thinks would be relevant to Inkscape as well. Once Inkscape 1.0 is done and the codebase is open for feature work, he may be interested in seeing if the same algorithmic work could be applied to Inkscape's codebase. He's not conversant in Inkscape's C++ coding conventions (fontforge is C) but has been going through 2geom and livarot and sees some areas for improvement. Marc, I suggested you'd be a great guy for Skef to bounce ideas and plans around with, and offered to introduce you to him. Would you be around to chat with him on IRC some time? Bryce

Hi everyone! We are quickly approaching the long-awaited 1.0 release of Inkscape, and to allow easier testing of the progress we've made with it, we just released a 1.0-beta2 version! You can get the release at https://inkscape.org/release/inkscape-1.0beta2/ in the form of source tarball to compile, AppImage for Linux, and .dmg for macOS (windows soon). The most visible changes should be : - MacOS Catalina users should be able to manipulate files - More responsive interface (faster rendering) - Improved text rendering All testers are encouraged to test this version and report bugs at inkscape.org/report The release date for 1.0 is not set in stone yet, but if we don't get major bug reports I expect a release around the end of December. == Translators == Thanks for your work! Strings have been frozen for a while, and it's not too late to submit translations until release date. == Developers == We have now branched the code repo. Hello, I am a member of Godot Engine's organization team for FOSDEM. We have been granted with a "Game Developers" room at FOSDEM, taking place in Brussels, Belgium, on February 1st and 2nd 2020. Even though we proposed this developers room, it will be about "*Free and Open Source Game Development"* at large and not focused on Godot Engine. Thus, we are calling for participations aimed at Free Softwares projects, involved closely or less closely in game development. These participations would consist in technical-oriented presentations during the GameDev room: game developers, game engine developers, tools developers are very welcome. Inkscape has grown into a big actor in drawing softwares recently, thanks to the boost of SVG usage in multiple target applications. In the case of game development, we also observe an increasing interest from creators with such format and Inkscape is definitely the biggest actor in this regard. Hi Ben, reporting and triaging bugs is a valuable contribution. The project measures bug contributions by their number, completeness and general helpfulness. This works just like it does with our developer contributions, where code commits must be made towards the repository, and verified by other developers in order to make it into the AUTHORS list (list of Inkscape code and translation contributors) and to have the right to vote. We would like to count your vote, though. To do so, we have to see more bug-related contributions, e.g. bug triage in the tracker at https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inbox/issues/, or bug migration contributions as per http://alpha.inkscape.org/bug-migration/ . Hi Mike, Thanks for contacting me, and double-thanks for your work at helping increase the number of Inkscape exprts. It's lovely to see the solid health of the overall ecosystem around Inkscape. It is indeed exciting to know 1.0 is coming soon, and having your tutorials available and up to date in conjunction with this release is a great goal. Inkscape is a 100% free and open source software project, and as such there's no NDAs or confidentiality agreements to deal with. (Although yes, the actual release date is sometimes embargoed to synchronize PR with packaging. But I suspect you're looking for a general estimate not the exact date.) That said, unfortunately it is difficult to predict when releases will occur with any degree of accuracy. Inkscape is a fully volunteer-driven project, and as such when there are release-critical issues the schedule can be driven by particular individuals' limited freetime availability. I hate to say, "It'll be released when it's ready to," but that's how it has always tended to end up working in practice... Due to my own limited time availability, I've handed off the release management role to Mc, who hopefully can provide some better indications about the timeframes for 1.0. I do know that the team has been hard at work at final polish, and it sounds like they're keen to get it out the door within the coming months. Beyond that, I'm not sure if you're aware, but there is a vibrant Inkscape community involved with documentation, user training, and support. They coordinate with book authors, conference organizers, and online instructors. I would encourage you to join this group, as it sounds like you're offering educational opportunities within that same space. Hopefully Maren or one of the others active in these areas can contact you with an invitation. Thanks again for your work at supporting the Inkscape ecosystem, and I hope 1.0 will bring increased opportunities for us all to spread wider knowledge of this software. Because to do so is a bug on MacOS. There’s nothing unique about Inkscape - it’s just either arrogance or laziness. Okay, so you’ve chosen to use a document window as your application root, and you don’t want to refactor your code to suit the UI guidelines of different OS - so, there is a is a 'lazy' way available to you - look at eg, GarageBand - which is a window-centred application. It starts, either with the last project, or it gives you a ‘choose a project to open/create new) window. You could do that. Not doing that is breaking your port to MacOS. You telling me that Adobe software isn’t cross platform? Even if there is no ‘Inkscape Menu’, there’s the File menu - which is where I look for preferences. Why? Because “File” is about Files - ie, documents, - so yes, project settings, project preferences, they belong under File. Apple subsequently decided (imo correctly) that Application level preferences should be under the application. Again, go into any MacOS application that has and edit menu - and look to see what is there. ‘Preferences' isn’t one of them. It’s a bug. You may think this is merely my opinion. What you are forgetting is that there is a uniform approach to application user interface on MacOS. Every single time you make a decision to break the UX guidelines, you increase the complexity of your application, and you lose thousands - even hundreds of thousands - of potential users; you may think it’s an opinion of mine - but go look at the available UX / UI guidelines published by Apple (and Xerox before them), along with the absolutely vast budget they put into it, in order to make MacOS ‘easy’. IMO the first four bugs I mention here are so major that many first time users will decide not to use InkScape again, which is unfortunate as it’s a really great app. Using vanilla 1.0beta1 on MacOS Catalina 10.15.1 (19B88) with default preferences set. (1) Surprise Quit 1) Open Inkscape. 2) Close ‘New document 1’ 3) BUG - Inkscape has now quit. There is no reason why the application should depend upon the existence of a document window. (2) Location of preferences menu item. 1) BUG - Preferences is in the Edit menu rather than in the ‘Inkscape’ menu Actually, many items in the Edit menu, which are to do with application level settings, should be in the Inkscape Menu. (3) Surprise Preferences panel dimensions. 1) Open Inkscape. 2) Open the preferences panel. 3) BUG - The panel height stretches across the entire vertical size of the screen, with no ‘preference tab’ content that deep. The panel width is unusually narrow, with some form elements being clipped by the panel. (Eg, System, Interface) Moreover, the nested tree is surprising, with the higher nodes (eg behaviour) showing minimal details, with no documentation / hints whatsoever. (4) Panel/Dialog focus problems. 1) Open Inkscape. 2) Open the preferences panel. 3) Drag the preferences panel so that the traffic light (close / minimise / zoom) sit over the centre of ‘New document 1’ 4) Click once on the RED (close) traffic light. 5) BUG - Focus is transferred to ’New document 1’ and the preference panel fades. Inkscape for dinosaur track research, questions

Dear all, I am palaeontologist at the University of Bonn, Germany, focusing on fossil dinosaur footprints and trackways. I regularly use Inkscape for my research (for measuring, data extration, and drawing of interpretive outlines), and have cited this software in several of my papers. I am currently working on a methodological paper on how to analyze fossil footprints based on 3D models. The approach I will present in this paper includes Inkscape as an important component. The idea is to import raster images into Inkscape (different graphical 2D representations of the 3D model), align them into an image stack, and draw interpretive outlines on a separate layer. I use the Bezier curves tool to collect a number of landmark coordinates from the separate footprints, which I then export to automatically calculate a large number of measurements for statistical analysis. The paper is to be published in a peer-revied journal (currently, I have the Journal of Palaeontological Techniques in mind, https://www.jpaleontologicaltechniques.org/). I already used this method in a recent paper (https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/02724634.2018.1512501) to rapidly collect measurements of a larger number of trackways. The aim of the new methodological paper is to improve this method and to make it available to our comunity of footprint researchers. However, there are two open issues/questions regarding Inkscape. I was wondering if you could give me some advice here. Export of path node coordinates is, unfortunately, currently possible only via a plugin, which adds an additional hitch (but I understand that research is not the focus of Inkscape). Such a plugin was posted on the Inkscape Forum in 2011, with improvements added by different members (https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/02724634.2018.1512501). I simplified the code so that it returns node coordinates only (and not those of the handles), see code below. Now to my questions: 1) I need to cite the modified coord export script in my paper, and make sure that it stays available. I assume that code published in the forum is not automatically released under a free licence, and that I cannot simply distribute the script together with the paper. A possibility might be to post the modified script to the forum and provide the link in the paper. This is only an option if the link remains available for a longer time (I cannot modify the paper once published). What would be the optimal way? 2) The coordinates given by the script need to be mirrored and translated to match the coordinates displayed within Inkscape itself. I would need to improve the script so that this is done automatically. I'm not into python scripting, but would try to figure this out. Any help/hints with this would be much appreciated. Is this a known issue? (and the dumbest bug ever)

I searched the bug tracker (perhaps using language that was too specific) but I couldn't find a report... Is a path using dashes with rounded caps supposed to ignore the rounded caps when you convert Stroke to Path? It visually does it right with butt or square caps, but rounded caps get converted as butts from how it appears. I'm seeing this in both stable and trunk and it seems... like an odd oversight. Anyone else have thoughts? Cheers, Josh

Mailman3 outage

The mailman3 list server was offline the past week, due to troubles it had delivering email to administrative user accounts. This generated excessive error logging to disk. I'm not 100% sure this is root caused but after clearing the queue it seems to be running happily again. I'll try and keep a closer eye on it. Bryce P.S. there's still a problem with some people unable to subscribe to the mailing lists; I doubt this change will fix chat, so this problem is still on the todo list.

One particular performance issue (I know there were multiple reports, but not sure we have an actual issue for it and GitLab throws 500 errors at me): Selecting a new font takes a very long time (a few seconds at least, some take 10-20 seconds). It does not happen in 0.92.x, though (with the same version of fontconfig/harfbuzz/pango/...), so it's either something we're doing, or something gtk3 is doing differently from gtk2. I've handled most of the technical side and meant to make a call for help at some point, but didn't get the chance to do it yet. Once content is updated I typically copy the CI-generated files manually and push the update to the inkscape repo. Hi all, The toolbar bug seems fixed for most systems and only seems to appear on wayland (at least I can't trigger it on xorg), and is now reported upstream at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/issues/2000 The translation system seems better (#311), so … do anyone see any issue that would need to be fixed before releasing a beta ? -- Mc

Hi Friends, Reference the 3 images uploaded by this member: https://inkscape.org/~yendrifernando/ The images appear to be made with Inkscape, but in my opinion, the links in the description are spam. As a moderator, I would like to be able to edit the description (via Curate) and remove only the "www.". In that way, the description still tributes the inspiration for the images to that website (as the member appears to intend), without having an active link to the website. Breaking the link removes the spam. Martin and I have had an extended private discussion about this. But he disagrees with giving moderators the ability to edit the description. He says that we need to have a community discussion about it. I'll have to be honest and say that I don't understand his position, or even really know exactly what his position is. Even if I did, I wouldn't try to represent it. So he'll have to do that. Our discussion ranged far and wide over moderation subjects, but none of his arguments really hit home to me, as a good reason not to allow moderators to edit (curate) the description. So it seems we've hit a stalemate. I'll be honest again and say that I'm not sure if the purpose of this discussion is to repeat our discussion publicly, or just to get opinions on curating the description. Because a lot of his concerns seemed to be about potentially overly aggressive moderation. Or maybe it's both? But I think I'm a fair moderator and can train fair moderators, so I'm ready either way :-) Martin, I hope this is a fair introduction of the issue? All best, brynn

I do use Inkscape alongside. since a couple of years i am working on patient education in hindi booklets 7 have more than 50 titles booklets to be published, 10 pages of 3x11" each. Illustrations, diagrams with devnagari text. My laptop lost its display and crashed with Ubuntu 19 and while converting os I found my svg files are mere png's and uneditable. Anyone have experienced similar problem or an explanation/help, please respond. Years of hard work is unreachable. Help recover it. Thanks.

help setting up gl notifications

Hi Friends, I'm having trouble setting up notifications for GitLab properly. I want to be notified whenever a bug I've reported has been changed. And otherwise, whenever someone tags my name with @. So far, I get notified about Vectors team stuff whenever someone uses @all or @brynn. But I haven't gotten a single notification about a bug report. Not even when I post a new bug report. I would have thought Global Notification would trump all else. But there are other options below that (for Groups and Projects). So obviously global doesn't trump everything, but in that case, I don't understand how to decide how to set anything. What exactly does global mean for gitlab? Part of the trouble I'm having is that when I look at the main Inkscape page, it has Subgroups and Projects, and lists 13 different items. But up in the dark blue bar at the top, is has dropdown lists for Projects and Groups. None of these 3 areas seem to be consistent. For example, why is the main Inkscape project a Group rather than a Project? And if groups are the highest level, why don't they have Groups first in the bar, rather than 2nd? And if Group is the highest level, why is the Vectors team a Group too? And then when I look at the Notifications page for settings, it has Groups and Projects separate, but it does not identify all the groups or projects in which I've participated, and there isn't any way to add more on my own. So all that makes it very hard to sort things out intuitively. Could someone just tell what to mark, to make sure I get notified about - any change to to a bug report of mine (or reports I subscribe to, if that's possible (so far, I don't see how to subscribe)) - @brynn Related - When someone migrates one of my bug reports, it's listed under their name. How can I still get notified about changes to those? Do I have to make a reply or mark something? Thank you very much, brynn

I would like to develop an extension to start with in python 3+ on windows, and I am not very sure of where to start. I just read the extension requirements which said the extensions need python 2. It also said that it was a little out of date. If need be I would be willing to modify it for python 3. I have programmed C/ C++ and half a dozen other languages over the years, my main problem is that I don't have a compiler for Window. I do have a Centos 7 machine which I could set up a dev environment, but my use is on a windows system. My aim is to do away with my need for MS Visio which I don't like very much and do my drawing parametrically. Regards Stephen

Perhaps this happened to a lot of people and maybe it's been discussed, but I dropped off inkscape-devel and inkscape-users. I think I signed up for the new lists as soon as I saw the announcement, but checking my settings just now the radio buttons Delivery status: Enabled [ ] Disabled [ ] were both off, the mailing list was neither enabled or disabled. Profiling Inkscape startup performance

Hello everyone, While I'm an Inkscape user for some years now, I'm fairly new to it from a developer point of view. In terms of performance, I've been recently doing some analysis with the help of cpu profiling tools. My aim in this mail is to present some of the things I noticed and maybe some ideas how to improve them. The tools I've been using are the gperftools and more recently the linux performance tool `perf` together with FlameGraphs (Disclaimer: Since I've been using them for the first time I don't have a deep knowledge about them). Both tools can capture the stack at a timed interval, so it is possible to estimate how much time is spent in different functions. These can be visualized for example by a flame graph which I found quite handy. In theses graphs the x-axis shows the stack records alphabetically sorted (not chronologically) and if possible merged. The y-axis shows the call stack. Recording the startup of Inkscape just until before the Window shows up[1] results in the attached results[2]. The original file is an SVG file (Note: This is a large interactive SVG and primarily intended to be opened in a browser[3]). By looking at the result I identified some parts that might be of interest (See annotated PNG file). - A - (100ms): Based on some individual function calls (e.g. get_preferred_width) I assume this is related to the layout calculations. Noteworthy is here that the stack mostly has a depth of up to 80-90 frames. I don't know whether this is usual for gtk, but for me this looks like the calculation of the layout might get very complex. Maybe it is possible in some places to simplify the layout (I'm referring e.g. to [4]). While this part only takes around 100ms in this record, the actual impact could be larger because the recording stops just before the window shows up. However, even after it shows there is a noticeable delay until it gets responsive. - B - (170ms): This part is the setup of the toolboxes at the top. I find interesting here that with the exception of the TextToolbar, each Toolbar only takes 5-10ms to load, but because there are so many of them, they sum up over 100ms (again without the TextToolbar). One idea I'll therefore try to look into in the next time is whether it is possible to lazy-load them, so that the GUI relevant initialization only runs as soon as required (when the tool is used the first time). Since most toolbars initialize in up to 10ms the delay is insignificant when clicking on a tool. - C and D - (65ms / 80ms): These relate to the initialization of the menu resp. the DesktopWidget. I haven't had a much closer look yet, but both take longer than I assumed. There might be some optimizations possible as well (e.g. I noticed SwatchesPanel::_rebuild is called at least twice, each running nearly 20ms). - E - (260ms): The last section is about loading the extensions. I don't know a lot about the extensions system now and the future plans, but I also wouldn't have expected this part to take that much time. - Looking further - The attached recording of the startup here is of course only a part of interesting parts for optimization (And there are also a lot of parts that I cannot identify with certainty). One second aspect I want to look more into is for example the fill and stroke dialog, which takes up to 600ms to load (not part of the attached profiling) because all marker images are expensively loaded and rendered as SPObjects at runtime. And if it is open on startup this time adds up to the delay before the window even shows up. -- All in all I admit that this a rather chaotic collection of maybe or maybe not promising parts for performance optimizations. This surely only touches the surface of possible analysis and improvements, but I wanted to share this early because maybe you have some ideas as well (or there were some things done in the past that I don't know of). Build time vs. Dev time extensions

Dear developers, Thanks to Tav's for his excellent hackfest overview which related general annoyance about extensions, it pointed to Uniconvertor being a particular issue. I'm sorry I wasn't at the meeting to talk about the issues around packaging extensions more directly. So I'm hoping this email can fill in for that and get some of the information I would have conveyed at the meeting. I won't speak to the API breaking, since Thomas and others have done very good work making sure that the API has greater backwards compatibility and is much less likely to break in older code. (now) But the specific issue here is about how we ship different extensions. There has historically been a fixed relationship between the `share/extensions` directory and what we ship. When we moved the extensions into their own repository, we included the git as a sub module to continue this relationship. But as development has progressed, it's become clear that there's way too much variability to both have a solid extensions project and keep this fixed one to one relationship. Take Uniconvertor as an example. It's a bunch of extensions that call software which must already be installed to work. Which are both important to Inkscape and impossible to corral into a standard code quality framework. They've been moved to[1] so they can be developed separately to provide them with more latitude. Now this breaks the build time assumptions about what is in the share/extensions directory at dev time. Because now we have a situation where packagers are not guaranteed to have all the extensions they may want to ship. But this must be so, because while the core extensions should provide a stable API, the doc callers for the help menu and basic extensions; other extensions are often not written in python, have no tests, don't have code quality checks, use external programs which may not be installed and are even only used on windows (but we ship them to linux users currently). The future of extensions will be the extension-manager[2] which will allow inkscape users to install extra functionality[3] without requiring Inkscape to ship quite so many extensions by default. You can see Uniconvertor extensions packaged on test pypi here for a flavour of what this would look like[4]. (The plan for 1.0 is to ship the manager as a stand alone app that can be installed separately for testing) But before that glorious future; all Inkscape packagers need to be able to bundle in extensions different locations so that they can package in all the things their users will need. This should provide them with far more power to decide what's important than currently, where extensions are denied from installers because of developer reasons. I do not know how packagers wish to do this. Linux packagers may want to link to uniconvertor as a recommends package with it's own dependencies (which would be good). Windows and Mac may want to literally include the code into their distribution. (I'm hoping this email can spark a discussion so we can get the tooling right for all packager types). So far I feel that I've ruffled feathers by removing extensions. But I don't believe that the build time extensions are the same thing as the developer time core extensions and I hope this email goes some way to laying out the logic for this and why it would make the Inkscape project stronger to do it this way. Launch Ikscape with default theme

Hi! I still making an Inkscape course documentation and I need to do some screenshots. I want the screenshots be as Inkscape default appearance, but I can't do that cause my desktop (Debian GNU/Linux + XFCE) is configured with an icon theme. This theme. So, when I launch Inkscape it looks great with these nice icons, but it is not a good idea to teach newbies using Inkscape screenshots that does not looks like his running inkscapes. How I can start Inkscape ignoring my environment icon theme. Thanks a lot!

Fwd: Extension request: Auto-generate rectangles based on input values

Dear dev community members, I am not sure whether this is the right way to ask for it. But I would like to make an extension (feature) request for a client of mine who uses your application. He is using Inkscape on a daily basis and doing a lot of repetitive actions in the program for which we thought an extension would be a good solution to reduce the time in his work. This is basically what he wants: He wants to fill 3 values: Width x Height x Depth (maybe in a popup) Based on these 3 values, 7 rectangles need to be created based on some calculation on the values he entered. I have added an example outcome of what he wants to be produced. All other values can be calculated based on the initial 3 values he enters. Is there anyone from the dev team who can help us out and discuss about the further requirements? Hope to hear from you. Keep up the good work! Editing elliptical arc segments in paths

Hi All, I wrote a new feature for inkscape a while ago (3 years ago) but never got it upstreamed, partly because it had some obvious bugs. Recently I wanted to use this feature again so decided to fix the code and bring it up to date with the latest code base. I have now fixed the bugs I found previously. The code is much closer to a state where it could be upstreamed, but likely it will need some tweaks for usability. The most notable differences are; - Arc segments now get a pair of handles at right angles to each other, to manipulate the two radii of the ellipse and the rotation of the ellipse. - Arc segments are no longer automatically converted to beziers upon editing a path - Arc segments can be converted to beziers using the "make segments smooth" button - Dragging the line of an arc segment will not manipulate the segment like it will if the segment is a line or a bezier (and therefore not all segments can be dragged, whereas they could before) (maybe a different behaviour is desired here) - The arc flags (the large flag and sweep flag) can be set using new buttons in the node toolbar I'm still a new contributor, so let me know what I should do next. Location and start of SB hackfest

Hello again, the Saarbrücken hackfest is approaching fast. On Monday, 27th, I will be there at 09:00 o'clock, from then on the doors will be open and everyone is free to come. The address is Ufergasse 2 66111 Saarbrücken It's a kind of hidden door between a casino and an adult video store, just step close to it and it will open on its own. There is a lift in the far right corner of the entrance room, or you can take the stairs on the right. The office is in the 2nd floor (German counting, Americans would call it the 3rd floor). The button in the lift says, among others, "2" (duh), "U2 Raum" and "K8 gGmbH". I will add some photos to the wiki page later. In case someone wants to get into the office on Sunday already, just ping me and I can arrange something. For those that are in the city on Sunday and don't know what to do, I'd suggest going for a drink in the evening. Super node snapping

Inkscape currently has a way to snap a drawing node to another drawing node. Is there a way to associate a "super snap node" with an object which would take precedence over the drawing nodes? Let me give an example. Proteins sometimes exist in cell membranes. The protein SVG would be a complex drawing, as would the membrane, both packed full of the usual drawing nodes. So moving the protein to the membrane in the usual snap mode is not going to be at all helpful. The "super snap node" would consist of a vector defined by two points specifying a position and an orientation. It would be associated with a grouped object but would not normally be visible. It would indicate the proper insertion orientation and position for the protein. A matching "super snap node" would be associated with each element in the membrane. In those mode one could drag the protein to the membrane and drop it and it would center and orient on the nearest super snap node in the membrane. Since cell membranes have two sides moving the protein over to the other half and releasing it would flip it 180 degrees and insert it in the other direction. In the more general case, there could be types of super snap nodes, so that only a pair of the same type would interact. Critical bug on Fedora 30 / Ubuntu 18.04 when using Wayland

Hello everyone, Inkscape 1.0a isn't usable at all for me at the moment on Linux when running it under Wayland; it appears to be missing most of the mouse events or something. I cannot draw even the simplest geometry! I haven't figured out how to make a screencast that shows the mousepointer, but maybe that's another Wayland issue ;-). Can't show it to you because of this, but it's really bad. I don't recall any reports about this and cannot find anything in the Gitlab issues either, but surely others must be experiencing this too... Unless everyone else is still on Xorg. I've reproduced this on both Fedora 30, with current trunk, as well as on Ubuntu Gnome 18.04.2, using the inkscape-trunk PPA. When I use Xorg, the problem disappears, on both distros. This is rather problematic though, because all (?) linux distros that have gnome also have Wayland enabled by default these days. Any pointers? A bug report maybe? Otherwise I will file one myself, and start some debugging. Best regards, Diederik

I wanted to share a little side project I've been doing for fun... Our Paypal link includes a memo field, which Inkscape's donors have used to say some very nice things over the years, that deserve to be shared with you all: http://alpha.inkscape.org/cheers/ This is a simple applet to cycle through the non-blank donation memos, from today backwards. It refreshes daily, although Paypal processing adds a few days lag so it's not up to the minute. For those of a more technical bent, the full data is at http://alpha.inkscape.org/cheers/cheers.json. I'm posting that in the open in hopes it can get integrated and used in other places; no changes are planned for the data file format, so consider that stable. The code itself for the React.js applet I've stuck on github here: https://github.com/bryceharrington/cheers-carousel I'd like to improve the styling a bit, but otherwise am done with this for now. Eventually this is going to be integrating into other finance displaying scripts I'm working on... but that'll be news for some other day. Enjoy! Bryce

Inkscape - Release status for 1.0 beta

Hi all, tldr; - Just an update on my earlier email on release status. We're still on pause waiting on blocker bugs, no ETA for release dates yet. Progress is getting made. There is a lot of good activity going in by RdH, NPJ2000 and others to get the Mac OS native packaging established. Some of that work has landed already, and screenshots are starting to get passed around. * https://chat.inkscape.org/file-upload/gPrPtAHfZDnA39yDK/extensions.png Of the two blocker bugs we're tracking, the test rendering offset bug (#45 in inkscape's gitlab) is well understood now and is down to figuring out the right form of fix, and the extensions bug (#156) has been progressing nicely, although I don't know the exact status at the moment. We have 17 open bugs milestoned to 1.0: * https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/issues?milestone_title=1.0 Ideally we'd drive this list down to zero by release, although if we can close the two Critical bugs and most of the High priority bugs we should be in decent enough shape. I've been thumbing through other bug reports, crash bugs in particular. There's a lot, but thankfully most are not things ordinary users are going to run into, as they tend to be a bit obscure. But obviously, the more of these we can resolve before final release, the better. Please devote some of your time to looking at bugs, even if you're not a programmer you can do analysis and testing which can be invaluable. Triaging work is also HIGH VALUE right now, most particularly for tagging bugs and assigning importance levels to all bugs in the main issue tracker. Chris and Maren collected a listing of problems they'd love to see fixed, from an actual product usability point of view: * http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/1.0_Release_Bug_Fix_List These need to be migrated to gitlab, milestoned for 1.0, and set as High priority. Great way to score levels in the bug game, while directly helping towards making the software stronger. So, as to scheduling of the beta release... Since the two blocker bugs are blocking the release process, I think it would not be wise to set any dates just yet. However, I think beta could be released shortly after they're resolved (or no longer considered blockers). Focusing beta on the Mac OS package would be wise, so we can maximize user testing, so I would also include its status in the schedule determination there. Scheduling of release candidates for the final 1.0... June looks pretty unlikely given the work remaining to be done. I'm guessing a late summer release may be more likely, although difficult to predict. Bryce

Hi all, I am SrrReal, a FOSS enthusiast and Inkscape user. Currently, I am a student researcher (in India) doing social sciences research of digital technologies. I recently began working on a project to explore how the identity of free software communities is shaped by its contributors. As an Inkscape user, I was keen on studying this by closely following the Inkscape community.This work is part of a course on ethnographic research - a type of research in which researchers engage closely with the people involved in the context they are studying, to gain a deep understanding. I am writing to introduce myself (and my research) to the broader community. In the coming weeks, I hope to chat with many of you, who do different things to make Inkscape what it is! A Bug found

Hi Everybody, Recently i found a bug, i don't know if this has been reported but here is. When you use fonts, the box that contain the text cut the base of this. When you are editing the file doesn't appear, the art looks well but when you export this to png file, the bug appear. If you convert the object text to traced, the bug doesn't appear either. Inkscape Scatter Extension Error

Hi, I was trying to use the Scatter Extension with the 1.0 Alpha version, following this tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EoUu0KrZZ0 It works fine with the latest stable release, but with this alpha version when I tick the live preview checkbox it displays the following error message: I have rebuilt three times (twice on windows, once on Linux (Ubuntu 18.04) ), but the error still there. Below is a detailed report on where we currently stand with our extensions repository. There are some decisions to make wrt how we support dependancies, how we test extensions that call out to outside programs and how we fix the remaining issues. If you'd like to help out, then pick one of the extensions in the failed, missing or otherwise has a problem from the below lists and download the inkscape-extensions repository from GitLab. New "Inkscape Extras" group

Hi all, In our gitlab setup, I've added a new team "Inkscape Extras". The principle motivation for setting this up right now is to facilitate work on the extensions, to establish a collaborative space for community contributors to share their work, but with a clear delineation from the core extensions that we as a project formally support and distribute. Inkscape Extras can include other side-projects, experiments, and other misc. codebases that are worth sharing with each other, but that we won't be formally supporting, packaging, or distributing. Access to Inkscape Extras can be given out broadly (i.e. we don't need to require the 2-patch rule for access like we require for the "Inkscape Devels" group). Let me know if you have questions, or need help getting projects set up under this group. Bryce

Since the Rules and Guidelines are essentially finished, the next step is to select moderators for the new forum. If anyone is interested in helping to moderate, please contact me. You can reply to this message on the list, or you're welcome to contact me privately, if you prefer. The Rules section of the Rules and Guidelines explains what the job of a moderator is. I think it will eventually appear on a new Forum Team on the website's Teams page, but it's not there yet. Hi I am interested in "Project Refactoring" being mentored by Tavmjong Bah, I have read about it at wiki.inkscape.org <http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Google_Summer_of_Code#P6._Refactori…>. However, I would like to know further details so that I can make my work distribution timeline for GSoC. Like what code needs to be converted into C++ and what not. Which directories are needed to be refactored and which not, etc. Is it purely developer's choice to refactor what he/she wants, or mentor/developer team will tell what things are to be refactored? Bug Migration Effort Kickoff

The Great Inkscape Bug Migration is ready to start! Please join us in moving Inkscape's bug reports from Launchpad to Gitlab. We're making a game out of it! Details on how to migrate bugs are available at this page: http://alpha.inkscape.org/bug-migration/ Thanks go to Terry Brown and Chris Rogers for setting this up. The tools allow tracking the bug migration effort, and gamify it using a leaderboard and randomly discoverable "Special Bugs". Those who gain enough points to reach different levels will be mailed Medal Stickers after the event, and the top three highest scorers will be acknowledged with special prizes. The outcome of this work will be good, well-described bug reports in our new bug tracker on Gitlab, thus making developers' lives easier as they work to resolve them. Our hope is that enough of the still-valid bugs get moved from Launchpad that we can shut down the old bug tracker entirely. Your work will help advance us towards this objective. Hi again, I made the edits requested from the first review. And those gave me some other thoughts. I added a couple of new "wrinkles" to the prerequisites for moderator section, and for the duties and responsibilities. For the change in prerequisites, I thought it couldn't hurt to encourage wider participation in the community, just by adding that language, but it's not a strict prerequisite. For duties and responsibilities, the ability for a moderator to choose what they want to moderate is already allowed for the gallery moderation. So that's not a stretch. The reason for adding it is that it might encourage someone to help out (with approving new messages), if they otherwise didn't want to feel obligated to get involved in a behavior issue. Hello everyone! I'm so excited to introduce myself and interact with the community here and hopefully be a lively contributor to inkscape! First things first, *who am I and why do I want to apply?* I'm a communication and information engineering undergraduate student in Zewail City, Egypt. I also happen to be a freelance artist who likes to explore new art programs along the way. I'm in my 3rd year in engineering, and I have taken a strong Object-Oriented programming course in C++ last year and data structures and algorithms course this year. The final project for the C++ course was to add features to a paint program! It was an incredibly beneficial and fun experience. Some of the features were resizing, creating new shapes, redoing, undoing, and other similar tasks. Whenever I'm not learning anything new (through online courses or university courses), I invest time to enhance my artistic skills. I was skimming through the projects available to apply for in GSoC and I found inkscape. I was immediately hooked. It's perfect in every possible way! I'm already familiar with manipulating objects in GUIs, I have a strong passion for art, I'm experienced enough to know what the user would want to see available while drawing and I'm skilled in coding! *What have I accomplished so far from the tasks listed in the GSoC website?*I have already built and run the project, and I have chosen to work on P3. slice Items. I believe I have what it takes to contribute. I'm currently creating some artworks to upload on the website and formulating a rigid timeline to follow for the project I chose. *Inquiries: Regarding the submission of a drawing I have made task, I was wondering where exactly should I submit it. LGM/Saarbrücken Hackfest

Hi Inkscapers, today, I phoned Aude Poilroux, project manager working at k8, who had offered to help us with getting a space for the planned Hackfest before LGM. k8.design (Institut für strategische Ästhetik) ---------------------------------------------- A non-profit company (gGmbH) owned by the Saarbrücken arts university. They do work on organizing events, art cooperations, digital transformation, supporting and executing projects that originated in the university, and many other things that the university itself isn't allowed to do, because it's an educational institution, and not a business. Their offices are at Keplerstr. 3-5 in Saarbrücken. Meeting space ------------- Aude is offering us a part of k8's open-plan office for May 27th, 28th and 29th. The part is usually used as sitting area, but they want to put some additional chairs and tables in. She says the place can hold up to 20 persons (but then it will be a bit cramped). There is another adjacent office, that can hold about 10 persons, but it may not be available all the time. We could use it for discussing stuff, while working can be done in the larger room. I forgot to ask about whiteboard/blackboard/projector/flip chart or similar. There are lots of electricity outlets, but we might need to bring some German multiple socket outlets. They have WiFi. I'm not sure about wired LAN, but she says the internet connection is broad band and very fast. We could use the space from ~ 9:00 in the morning, and if we can name one responsible person, she is considering to give us a key, so we can stay as long as we need. There is no canteen, and no organized meals. However, the venue is located in a pedestrian zone with multiple places where one can buy food close by. One of them is a wholefood shop, which offers meals at reasonable prices. There are also a couple of bakeries, and then there's a microwave in the office. She is asking us to let her know the rough number of attendees by mid May. We would then also need to name a responsible person, who would need to sign for the group, and would guarantee for us not wreaking havoc in their offices. On the 29th, there will be an additional event called "From Code to Community", starting around midday, where local (as in ~ 100km radius) businesses and open source projects are meant to meet. The program isn't ready to be published yet, but it is planned that there will be keynotes by politicians and people from FSFE, talks about open source business applications, talks about open culture, a workshop on collaboration culture, booths from various open source projects (educational, LUGs, mapping, MSF, framasoft). The event is meant to attract students and businesses. It's going to take place in the same building where, at 18:00, the opening of LGM will take place. Aude is asking us if we would be able to staff a booth there, to present Inkscape to students and small businesses. The event is mostly in German, but people from Luxembourg and France are invited to attend too, so it might be useful to also have one of our French-speaking community members there. During LGM, they seem to have more rooms available than there will be conference tracks, so she says it should be possible to have a collaboration space for Inkscape. However, we probably won't be able to have the same place continuously, and we would have to ask when we need it. There is also plenty of sitting space available on the venue that is not in a separate room. So Q1: Shall I confirm the dates as written above? Q2: Would someone be interested in presenting Inkscape to local people before LGM on Wednesday? (I would be) And Q3: Is there anyone volunteering to be the one who holds the key (if we get one) and to sign the agreement? I will probably not stay late, so I'd like that to be someone else. Compilation Problem : ninja error

I have successfully build the project using cmake, however, ninja is giving an error during compilation: [ninja: error: '/c/msys64/mingw64/lib', needed by 'lib/libinkscape_base.dll.a', missing and no known rule to make it] I am also attaching a snapshot of my terminal to bring more clarity to the problem. Maybe a list of all the extensions and for each whether they're good to go, in progress, broken, etc. In reading some user critiques of Inkscape, sounds like some of the extensions may be underutilized, so 1.0 may be a useful point to do some selective curation? However, during build process I am encountering an error. I have attached the snapshot of my terminal as it will bring more clarity for understanding the nature of problem. Critical bugs and the Beta release plan

Hi all, Beta was roughly planned for March, but it looks like more work is needed on bugs. Below is a review of where we're at and proposal for how to decide when we're ready for releasing beta (and after that, when we can enter Freeze). There are two high importance bugs labeled "Blocker", #153 "Language selector doesn't work" and #45 "Text rendering offset". Fortunately, both are getting some attention, and Tav has potentially fixed the latter. I've assigned #45 to Tav, but we need someone to own #153. Marc, could you take it? In gitlab is #35 "Crash on exit following menu rewrite" which several people are confirming; there is a backtrace but it needs some analysis work done to figure out what is happening. Can someone take assignment on that? In launchpad there is #1806878 "Master not working without GUI" and #1809676 "Crash on Undo, Cut Path, Divide path, etc." Tav has done some work on the first and has taken the assignment on it. The second has a good backtrace but needs someone to investigate. Who'd like to take a stab at it? For Freeze, I propose we set as pre-requisites that all Blocker bugs are closed, that all Critical bugs targeted to 1.0 are closed, and that all other 1.0 Milestone bugs must be Assigned and listed as Known issues in the release notes. After Freeze has started, if any new Blocker bugs crop up, then Freeze will be halted, any established release schedule is canceled, and the release put on indefinite hold until the Blocker has been cleared. R.I.P. mrdocs (1963--2019)

The Scribus Team is deeply saddened to announce the loss of our friend and colleague Peter Linnell who in the end lost his long battle against cancer. It is no understatement to say that without Peter Scribus wouldn't be what it is today. It was Peter who spotted the potential of Franz Schmid's initially humble Python program and, as a pre-press consultant at the time, contacted Franz to make him aware of the necessities of PostScript and PDF support, among other things. Peter also wrote the first version of the Scribus online documentation, which resulted in his nickname "mrdocs" in IRC and elsewhere. Until recently, and despite his detoriating health, Peter continued to be involved in building and releasing new Scribus versions. Scribus was the project he helped to set on track and which marked the beginning of his journey into the world of Free Software development. While it remained at the heart of his commitments to Open Source in general and Libre Graphics software in particular, Peter contributed to Free Software in many other ways as well. For example via contributions to projects related to freedesktop.org, as a package builder of many Free programs for several Linux distributions on the openSUSE Build Service, and later as an openSUSE board member. Peter was also crucial in bringing the Libre Graphics community together by way of sharing his expertise with other graphics-oriented projects and his assistance in organzing the first Libre Graphics Meetings. In the sometimes ego-driven and often emotional world of Open Source development, Peter managed to get along very well with almost everybody and never lost his sense of humour. We will remember Peter "mrdocs" Linnell for what he was: an optimist, an incredible team player, an honest man and, above all, a friend. Our thoughts are with his family. Hi Inkscape! I am Shavez, a sophomore @IIT Indore. I really liked InkScape when I first used it. I am seeking participation in GSOC 2019. I have chosen InkScape as my org to contribute. I had my mid-term exams over the month of March, :( They went well, though :). I have cloned your repo and will be pushing couple of patches soon. I have fairly good exposure to programming, I participated in many coding-related events till now. I will really appreciate any suggestions related to this.
