I believe that most of the systems where it made an actual difference are now gone, but it did. It complained that we were setting a pointer value into a non-pointer variable. So we probably have NULL defined as some pointerish macro or value and which should not be assigned to integer variables, while '0' is a magical constant that the compiler knows to just do the right thing with for both pointers and integers. '0' by the C++ language definition works in all cases, but NULL does not. This and the associated warning start to become very important for 64-bit code. Mixing integers and pointers leads to major problems. Bottom line, though, is that we need to remove warnings by fixing the code. The pointer assignments in that initializer could be changed to "NULL", but the integer ones need to stay changed to zero.

Hi all, Before reading on, have a look at this code fragment, and ask yourself the question "what type is _desktop, _verb_t, _css, _tool_obs, etc.?" StyleSwatch::StyleSwatch(SPCSSAttr *css, gchar const *main_tip) : _desktop(0), _verb_t(0), _css(0), _tool_obs(0), _style_obs(0), _table(2, 6), _sw_unit(0) The correct answer is: _desktop is a pointer _verb_t is an int _css is a pointer _tool_obs is a pointer _style_obs is a pointer _sw_unit is a pointer Please STOP changing NULL into 0. It makes the code completely unreadable and makes me want to quit Inkscape. I am not kidding. Thanks, Johan

New: add nodes at extreme values

Hi all, To help font designers, I just added new functionality to the node tool. It adds a node at the extreme values of a path, if there is not already a node there. (because of a bug in 2geom, it does not work for some special cases, we are working on it) At the moment, this new feature adds 4 buttons to the node tool. Way too much of course. The plan is to move them into a submenu of the Add nodes button. Deep Ungroup

It is just proof-of-concept (version 0.1) but seems to work for me. Bug reports, or (even better) patches and pull requests are more than welcome! Hi All, I thought it would be worth mentioning that we need to get rid of all direct access to private fields of objects as part of our GTK+ 3 migration. i.e. foo->bar = bar_val; // NO!! gtk_foo_set_bar (foo, bar_val); //Yes! bar_val = foo->bar; // NO!! bar_val = gtk_foo_get_bar (foo); //Yes! To check for these issues, you can compile inkscape with: make CFLAGS+="-DGSEAL_ENABLE" CXXFLAGS+="-DGSEAL_ENABLE" Note that there are probably hundreds of such problems, so any help with the cleanup would be appreciated! Usually there is a suitable GTK/GDK accessor function to fix the problem. Sometimes (e.g. [1]) there isn't, which I guess implies that we're doing something the "wrong" way. Bazaar advice

Hi all, A recent commit to lib2geom compressed almost all commits since februari into one. Very annoying, although I know you can find out what those individual commits were with some more clicking. These mistakes don't surprise me; I am scared of the bzr tool that does things I do not understand. So to make people aware of the dangers of bzr, I'd like to give advice to simple folks like me: ************************************* I strongly advise you to not work in branches and merge it into trunk, and stay away from any other so-called convenient advanced functionality of bzr, like push-pull-whatever. Simply use it in 'svn mode'. http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Working_with_Bazaar#Using_a_central… ************************************* If you have fully understood how bzr works, perhaps you can try to use the extra functionality. Canvas color option (Bug #169623)

Hi all, I've just committed a patch William Swanson did for the wishlist bug #169623 "Canvas color option" (https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/169623). A rather popular wishlist (12 people declared being affected on LP). It compiles and works as expected on Windows XP and Ubuntu. The canvas color is now set to the drawing background color (defined in the document properties), ignoring alpha. Thus if you choose a fully transparent black, the canvas will be black (instead of white as in the stable Inkscape version). Note that the modification doesn't affect exports (PNGs still use the alpha channel). Don't hesitate to comment. Regards, -- Nicolas PS: Apparently the snap indicator color is broken (it never gets the white stroke it has in the 0.48.x branch when using a dark background - SnapIndicator::set_new_snaptarget is *always* called with pre_snap=false), but it seems that the bug was already in the trunk (also reproduced on Windows XP with 10760, 10700, 10614 and 10568).

By the way, all people who work on a trunk checkout of lib2geom might need to use bzr pull --overwrite or get a fresh checkout. I'm not sure how a bound branch works in this case. If you opt for a fresh checkout, you can carry over your uncommitted changes using bzr merge --uncommitted or a diff Regards, Krzysztof

Inkscape Website (Help needed)

Hello Folks, It's that time again, I hope everyone is having a happy holidays! I am writing to you all in an urge to complete the new website within the next couple of months. I know we have all been busy with the holidays and what not. Here's a brief update on that status. The website in regards to the design elements have been completed almost all the bare bones pages have been completed and implemented into the design. The design can be seen at dev.inkscape.org . and of course the code can be viewed at https://code.launchpad.net/~inkscape-webadmin . The backend code has been partially implemented however a lot is still missing such as user accounts login etc and a web based editor. I'd like to take a moment to thank Chris Morgan for porting over all the pages an Hinerangi Courtenay for the actual design as well as the various others. I can't name everyone in this email but it's definitely been a team effort. On that note there's still a lot to be done. Here's what I think our best plan of attack is. I think our best plan of attack is to take the current site and all of it's factors and put it into a solution such as pinax ( http://pinaxproject.com/) Using pinax allows us to make a custom website without having to have all the components of a CMS but it allows us to easily implement various things with little effort such as account management profiles etc and web based editing. Overall it shouldn't be too much work but we need someone with python/django experience to port our current code/design elements to pinax. >From there once it's implemented we will then of course need the various translation teams to finish translating the content and to port over the rest of the news. So today I am looking for anyone with django/python experience to contribute to getting this website finished. I need people who are motivated and willing to push forward and get this done in the least amount of time possible. If you're willing to contribute or have any further questions on the inkscape website please feel free to reply to this email or to me directly via email or irc (msg inc) Also if there is a company that would like to sponsor development of the website or put in hours. We're willing to list you as a contributor on the website development page. In the past this project has kind of been put a little bit on the back burner due to everyones time constraints which is completely understandable but any help we can get would be great. Hi Guys, So I have been doing a lot of work on the Import from OCAL dialog and I have finally finished! I was wondering whether I could get some testing, especially on some different platforms with different internet connections. All you need to do is get my branch using: bzr branch lp:~and471/inkscape/ocal-dialog-improvements And then compile as usual. You will find the dialog in File > Import Clip Art So yeah, basically I want a lot of testing, to iron out any errors that I have missed and also feedback on the stuff I have done. Then once that is all done, I shall propose for merging into trunk. A list of changes is below, as well as a link to screenshots of the new dialog. Find / Replace dialog

How about an updated Find dialog to include the great replace functionality found in 2 text extensions - Replace text and Replace font ? The idea is to have a unified dialog that can find/replace on almost anything in the document - text, styles, attributes, fonts etc. A history of past find/replaces (in the combo-box), exact and case sensitive matching, undo history, dockable dialog, and the status on what was found/replaced. Adding half tones pattern to SVG filters

I would propose to add half tones patterns to svg filters primitives. I think adding them at this level could be extremely powerful and useful for designers like turbulence is already. No need for a lot of settings (most of them like color could be controlled by their association with other primitives) ; only frequencies (x and y), shape, angle and eventually other ones proposed by print specialists. ivan

I just noticed that in Oneiric that my tablet isn't doing it's thing even with everything switched on. Is there still a bug in inkscape trunk over the pressure? GTK+ version dependency

Hi All, As we move towards GTK3 compatibility , we're going to run into a lot of backward-compatibility issues. For easy cases like bug #800565 [1], we can just add code alternatives, but there are other situations where this isn't really desirable. An example would be fixing deprecated symbols in our copy of GDL... I'd really prefer to import changes from upstream rather than increasing the size of our diff any further. However, the upstream fix for one of the GDL issues requires gtk+ 2.22. The question is when to start bumping the gtk+ version requirement for Inkscape? If we want to support LTS linux distros, we could be waiting a **very** long time. For example... Ubuntu Lucid (LTS) has no GTK+3 library, and only gtk+ 2.20, and is supported until April 2013. Options include... 1. Keep our linux LTS-release support rigorously; don't make any gtk code updates that introduce a gtk > 2.20 dependency (unless there are easy code-alternatives for backward compatibility). Eventually move on when common LTS distros reach end-of-life. 2. Gradually inch forward with dependency versions. Drop linux LTS-release support for trunk, but maintain support for all current non-LTS distro versions (e.g. Ubuntu Maverick and higher). 3. Charge ahead mercilessly towards compatibility with the current stable GTK version (currently 3.2). Floating Dialogs with multiple documents

Is there a plan for how floating dialogs should be managed with multiple windows ? Currently each document has is own set of dialogs and a dialog-manager to control them. The dialog-manager ensures there is only one instance of each dialog per document. So with 2 documents open, you have 2 dialog-managers and can have 2 identical dialogs floating around at the same time (and several bug reports relating to this below) All floating dialogs respond to the current active document. When a document is closed all the dialogs opened with that window are reattached to the next open window and remain alive until the application is shutdown. Hence memory usage grows for each new window that is opened and is not reclaimed when documents are closed. Users have requested 2 different styles of operation (1) Have floating dialogs per document, but close/hide them when a document is closed/unfocused (258013) (2) Have at most a single instance of each floating dialog that works across all open documents "gimp style" (317439). Which is the preferred behaivour ? Toolbars architecture

Hi, I'm working updating the wiki to have a more clear view on modules, works to be done and tips for developpers. Here I'm working on the toolbars: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/User_Interface_Modules#Toolbars Some questions: * Nearly everything is in src/widgets/toolbox.cpp. The final goal is it to have breakdown in per-toolbar-files (like for exemple we have actually for Select and Gradient toolbars) + toolbox.cpp file? o If yes, can I work at this breakdown or is there already a work to do this? * Is there a C++ migration guidance for toolbars? I've found nothing. * Can toolbars files move to a dedicated directory (ex: src/toolbars and then the C++ version in src/ui/toolbar) or will they still appears as widgets? * In files we are speaking about "toolbars" and "toolboxes". What's the good word? I think it's toolbar, but just to be sure... Moreover, I would like to propose you to have one page per toolbar in the wiki with a screenshot, list of functions (like a user documentation but that could be also usefull for developpers to find their way), links to related source files and (if we can have an automatic link between the wiki and launchpad) links to all bugs/wishlist related to it (with a system of tags). Hi, I was working filling the wiki about User Interface. Is it normal that the file src/ui/dialog/panel-dialog.h does not have a .cpp? This file contains prototypes and source code of all functions of the class Inkscape::UI::Dialog::PanelDialogBase.
