Hi, May I introduce myself, My name is Omar El Sawi, I study Computer Visualization at National Centre for Computer Animation, UK. Unfortunately, I was late to hear about the Google Summer of Code Project. However, I have been using your software, and I would love to join. The "Color Adjustment Dialog" task seems suited to my skills. (I made a simple program last year with some similar functionality.) I'm thinking a dialog under (Effects -> adjust colours) which could interactively change the colours of the selected objects. Another one that is interesting for me, is "User Interface for SVG Filters". Are these suitable (free) projects which I could submit an application for? Any advice? Now let's see ... the drawing is below the horizon, you can see the top, that means you look down on it. If you look down, the 3rd vanishing point must be below. GSoC Proposal from a Minor :(

Hey everyone, I'm brand new to the Inkscape development world, however, I have been interested in graphics since a very young age. I was on IRC earlier today asking around for advice on a python script for _Blender_ (Notice, not Inkscape) for a 3D `SVG' editor; more like : 1. An advanced hack for Blender to convert meshes to control points for a collection of Bézier patches. Then use the topology tools to project the NURB surface to a bunch of curves on a plane to save as an SVG file. Of course a few passes would need to be made, one for the outline as Bézier curves, one for textures, gradients, on and on as you wish ;) ! ^ -> .Blend to SVG 2. I haven't seen an SVG yet to this date that hasn't been HAND-coded to include great animation. This could be solved by use of using Blender's amazing animation/tracking/timeline UI as a most needed helper tool. ^-> SVG Animation 3. AIGLX/Beryl is teh man! (Sorry for incorrect grammar..) But it really is, and it attracts a lot of people looking for something pretty...now imagine if _artists_ could be drawn to a system like that... Sadly, however, my dreams of having this amazing UI of new dimensions, rotations, amazing color, and all of that, are still not progressing. As such, that makes me feel bad as a developer. SO, let's start working guys and girls! What we need are analogies for the UI! They allow the user to bootstrap (compiling lingo..) to unfamiliar systems. Simply, I want to help people learn how to use complex things such as boolean operations, multiple gradients, and _artistic/thoughtful_ simplicity while drawing...making a picture with 10E10 control verts is pointless unless you are mapping the [Hemi]spherical view of the Universe! In order to achieve this, we need to see what a picture is _made_ of. We need to see the back, front, top, bottom, middle, second to last!, basically _every_ perspective we can get of layers to help people visualize better what they are trying to make. Art isn't about efficiency or even skill to put something to paper....it's about the creativity that happens, expression of that should come through careful analysis of oneself , and through the education the community should be providing with tools to empower individuals (such as Inkscape). So we must make a `flipbook' or stack of transparent OpenGL canvases, that can be played with like cards in a deck. Or something natural like that...So they could have SVG `cards' we will call them, and you can rotate them in 3D, look at the next card underneath, etc! Now that is a productive use of technology that also makes windows wobbly.... :-/ ^-> SVG/OpenGL Intuitive interface... I have other ideas for graphics if anyone's interested...I dunno not many people _are_ interested in my ideas, haha. ==================================================================== The most Important part... ==================================================================== But basically, after finding that I need to concentrate on coding the Blender part of the code...making all the SVG effects from scratch would take quite a while for a little me! That's where I turn to you people. Somehow I want to connect the Inkscape codebase as well as the Blender sources to a common fork, at least. 2D vectors and 3D aren't that different after all ya know! SoC proposal: ImageMagick effects in Inkscape

Hi, I have written up a proposal to Inkscape for this year's Summer of Code. I'd be much obliged if you guys could give it a look and let me know how it is. Thanks, -Nicholas Bishop == Project Proposal == The goal of this project is to add multiple raster effects to Inkscape through the ImageMagick library. == Details == Integration with ImageMagick will be achieved using Magick++, the C++ binding for ImageMagick. Magick++ comes with excellent documentation, which should greatly ease the integration process. ImageMagick has quite a large set of effects, probably at least 50 or so. Time permitting, all of these can be added to Inkscape (though naturally I'll skip some of the unnecessary ones like flip and rotate.) The initial GUI for the raster effects can be quite simple; most effects take only a few inputs, if they take any at all. In order to avoid dumping 50 new menu items into the Effects menu, I propose creating a single 'Raster Effects' menu item, which will bring up a dialog containing a list of all the effects, and space enough to show controls for any parameters the currently-selected effect might have. A handy feature to implement, time permitting, would be a small preview window showing how the effect will look when applied to the selection. My proposed schedule for this project is based on the timeline suggested in the Inkscape wiki, with some modifications: 0) I've already successfully built and installed the latest revision of Inkscape from SVN. 1) Make the modifications to the Inkscape build system needed to use the Magick++ library. I have some prior experience with autoconf scripts. 2) Start building the basic code that will be used for all the effects; get one effect in ImageMagick to a usable state (I'll start with something like the negate effect since it's easy to see when it's working correctly.) Also begin code documentation. 3) Implement more ImageMagick effects. 4) Finish the code documentation and implement a test suite. Note: I'm not familiar with how Inkscape's existing testing code works, so I will need guidance from my mentor in this area. 5) If I complete the above plan before time runs out, I'm confident that there are more tasks related to the earlier work that I can fill in the remaining time with. For example, it might be useful to implement a stack of raster effects, so instead of simply applying effects to a selection, multiple effects can be attached to it, and arbitrarily reordered and altered at a later time. Doubtless other useful side features will be suggested as the project progresses. == Bio == I'm a computer science student at the University of Maryland, College Park. I don't have any summer classes or jobs, so I'll be free to devote as much time to this project as necessary for me to complete it successfully. I've been excited about the possibilities offered by open source graphics applications since I switched to using GNU/Linux several years ago. I've regularly used GIMP, Inkscape, and Blender for some time now, and in that time I've been amazed to see how far each has come. Three years ago, in an effort to duplicate some of the new tools becoming popular in commercial 3D modelers, I started a graphics project called SharpConstruct (sharp3d.sourceforge.net), an open-source 3D sculpting tool. While working on SharpConstruct I gained experience with C++, the automake system, and gtkmm. This was my big introduction to the world of free software development, and while it was a relatively small project with only one other developer, it was an invaluable experience for me in terms of learning about programming and interacting with the many interesting users of open source graphics software. Last year I successfully completed a Google Summer of Code project with Blender that involved adding three new modeling tools (written in C) to the program. (See Sculpt Modeling, Retopo, and Multires in the 2.43 release notes: http://www.blender.org/development/release-logs/blender-243). Last year's Summer of Code was quite an experience for me; although I was able to complete all the tools I had outlined about in my proposal and more, it was not until some time after the final SoC deadline that my final (and rather large) patch was reviewed and merged into Blender's main CVS branch. In order to complete the merge I was given commit rights, and I continued to further develop and extend the tools. It was not until February of this year that Blender 2.43 was released, which was the first official release to contain the tools I wrote during the Summer of Code. The community response to the tools was overwhelmingly positive, and since then I have continued to maintain and extend the tools. For this year's Summer of Code I am applying to three organizations: BZFlag, GNOME, and Inkscape. I'm looking forward to another great experience of writing code, and as with my project last year, I hope to continue working with Inkscape after the conclusion of the Summer of Code.

Saying hello

Hi all, I sort of disappeared after last year's SoC was over, but some of you might remember me. I'm a student pursuing an MSc degree in Computer Science from Hungary who contributed to Inkscape with SoC working on the Cairo-based PDF exporter(s). My 'disapperance' was mainly because of an overloaded schedule at the university and because of other activities. I apologize for this. Looking back now I know that developing the native PDF export extension into a full-blown one would've been a better approach because with that now Inkscape wouldn't have to wait for Cairo to get decent PDF export capabilities. Of course, in the long term, the integration with Cairo is a good thing. But I'm glad that the work on Cairo's PDF backend went in the direction I was investigating. Now thanks to Adrian Johnson transparent gradients are supported in Cairo (fortunately he could make good use of my previous patch). Rendering of groups is a bigger issue since that would need a reorganization of how the PDF backend's functions now work (especially the stream handling functions). I wrote proof of concept code for this at the end of last summer but there wasn't enough time to polish it into a full solution because of the involved deeper modifications to the backend. Now, building on the experience I gained last summer, I would be happy to work on PDF import for Inkscape taking part in this year's SoC. My approach would be to use Poppler for parsing the PDF document and then generate Inkscape's representation in memory from an output device. Other solution would be to use Cairo's SVG backend to generate the SVG file from the PDF document using Poppler and import it with sp_document_new_from_mem. Though I doubt that this would yield good quality results. I can't see a mentor mentioned for this project idea in the wiki. So who would be the mentor for this project? The obvious advantage of this project compared to last summer's Cairo PDF export project is that regarding development it wouldn't depend on any external libraries so it could be actually done in three months. How debug you under windows?

Hi, Im new here. I have check out inkscape from svn and build its under WinXP like describe on http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Win32Port. It was very easy. Many thanks for this. Next step I will look into the code with a debugger for lerning how inkscape work and find the right place for my modifications wishes. My question: Are there any way for debug inkscape under WinXP with a IDE integrated debugger (e.g. DevC++, Code::Blocks, Eclipse/CDT or MS Visual C++)? How debug you under windows? Thanks in advance! Hi, all, For a specific bug I needed fixed (doesn't affect Inkscape, as far as I know), I built mingw cross- and native-compilers with a particular bugfix patch applied. Win32 builders don't need to upgrade unless they want to. However, they do both have the latest win32api and mingw-runtime libs applied. Minion font problem

I own Adobe FontFolio 8.0 and have strange problems with Minion font family. Those fonts render correctly with GIMP and Scribus, but not Inkscape. If I somehow manage to get them on canvas, they get totally messed up when picking Bold or Italic faces of the same using Font dialog, but not if I use secondary toolbar for the same purpose. Anyone experienced similar problems? Thanks in advance, Vlada

Hello all, Here is my application, please give me comments so I can improve it. Most of you know me already but I decided to write a biography anyway :) What happened to grids? Yesterday I committed my grid framework implementation which facilitates easier grid implementation. I think the grid GSoC project should focus more on technical 3D drawing then only on grids (see http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=38507645) I decided to have a go on a topic I had not worked on yet. I am very enthusiastic about the live effects, especially after a reassuring IRC chat :) Unfortunately I was not able to pass this enthusiasm onto a friend who is too psyched up about some other GSoC project where he gets some DSP hardware to work on... I'm here, like several others, because of Google's SoC. I am a Master's student in Mechanical Engineering at Southern Methodist University. I have kept an eye on Inkscape for several years, but I have only rarely had occasion to use it. I, like everyone else here (it seems), am interested in adding facilities that will make Inkscape easier to use to make 3D drawings. Being an engineer, I am also interested in being able to use it to make orthographic drawings. Aside from the 3D box tool, there are several features that might prove useful for 3D drawing: 1) Isometric/Axiometric grid 2) Diagonal guides (converging to a vanishing point) 3) Drawing with a prespecified transformation 4) Make Ctrl-dragging a node observe the object's transformation matrix 5) Perspective transformation (this would require somehow extending SVG's transformation mechanism) 6) Support for snapping non-node corners of rectangles I would be happy to work on any of these features over the summer. The usefulness of the first two seem obvious (to me), but the rest may take some explaining. Being able to set a transformation before you start drawing would allow you to, for example, set up drawing top faces for an isometric drawing, and have the rectangle tool work properly for those faces. Similarly, it would be useful to have a convenient way to move a node only along the basis vectors of an object's coordinate space, thus moving horizontally and vertically in the conceptual image. In conjunction with the previous two items, a perspective transformation would allow the same manipulations of orthographic images to be applied to perspective images. As for (6), this is usually taken care of by bounding-box snapping, but that doesn't work when the rectangle has undergone a transformation, making its corners not at the corners of its bounding box. Also, for bug #1674596, would an acceptable replacement for "Export Bitmap..." be "Render to File..."? This seems like an ideal bug for me to figure out the patch submission process because the change is only one line (I think; I haven't been able to test it yet). -- Eric Sumner

NUBIE: extending pstricks output; printing subsystem

Hi folks, I'm looking into fixing (text doesn't appear in output with latest SVN) and extending it to support embedding text as text. During a preliminary familiarisation hack, I've introduced a function: PrintLatex::text(Inkscape::Extension::Print *mod, char const *text, NR::Point p, SPStyle const *const style) (using ps.cpp as an example). I need the position of the text, and I was hoping that p[NR::X] and p[NR::Y] would give this, but they have the value 0.0000 0.0000 I'm new to cpp and Inkscape. Can you advise where I might be going wrong - and any wiki documents I should be checking in addition to PrintingSubsystem best regards, richard

I've become interested in Inkscape again and I'd like to figure out a good way to contribute. Here's a couple things I thought I'd throw out there: 1) I'm used to Bugzilla, has there been any discussion about moving away from a Sourceforge Bug Tracker into something a little more powerful (in terms of search? 2) In Mozilla, anyone can submit a patch to a bug, then the admins/super-reviewers must accept and merge the patch. Is there a mechanism for this within Inkscape? For instance, I'd like to report a bug against a SVG tutorial and then post a suggested fix for it that an admin can take and merge into the codebase. Similarly, my ambitions would be to get into the source code of Inkscape eventually and attempt another patch (this is more of a long-term goal though). Basically is there a way for the "casual" developer to submit patches in a standardized way? Thanks, Jeff

Security updates to Inkscape

Just before 0.45.1 was going to release I happened to do an audit of Inkscape's use of printf-style format strings (and the "..." argument). Unfortunately, there were multiple vulnerabilities[1]. Aaron gracefully delayed the final release so I could get CVEs issued, and notify other distributions. The basic problem the use of a *printf call directly on a variable without a format string. For example: printf(variable); vs printf("%s",variable); In the former, printf will parse any format chars in "variable", including the dangerous "%n", which allows for arbitrary memory overwriting. When functions use "..." to take in format strings for later processing by a *printf function, you can end up in the same situation. (Sorry to pick on ishmal's code, but it's a good example.) From the recent security fix commit: - status(event.getData().c_str()); + status("%s", event.getData().c_str()); "status" was defined as: virtual void status(const char *fmt, ...); Now, since the code is *filled* with format string "..." usage, it can be a real pain to find them all. Luckily, gcc has an attribute to flag a function as acting like a printf-family call, and Glib has a macro to create this attribute if gcc is being used as the compiler. So, now "status" is defined as: virtual void status(const char *fmt, ...) G_GNUC_PRINTF(2,3); The two args in G_GNUC_PRINTF point[2] to the format string variable, and the "..." argument. In the case of a class (as above) there is an implicit "this" argument as argument #1, meaning the format string "fmt" is really arg 2, and the "..." happens at position 3, as reflected in the G_GNUC_PRINTF usage. These markings, combined with the gcc compiler flag "-Wformat-security" will issue warnings about missing format strings, and do other strict type-checking. I've added this to the default CFLAGS as well. (And -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2, which adds even more protections via glibc.) Overall, many format issues were corrected[3], only a few of which were security-sensitive (37 files changed, 120 insertions(+), 111 deletions(-)). When making new "..."-using function, please review the glib macros for appropriate attributes, and take care to use them safely. I'd especially appreciate it if someone could look at: ./display/sp-canvas.h:SPCanvasItem *sp_canvas_item_new(SPCanvasGroup *parent, GtkType type, const gchar *first_arg_name, ...); This seems to be a NULL-terminated list (and not a format string, obviously), but it should get marked as such[4] if that's true. The dom/js/ tree is stuffed with "..." and I did not audit it, since it is not hooked up yet. However, we need to be very careful with it, and I'd MUCH prefer this code stayed outside of the inkscape code base so we can just link to an external library in the event of security updates to those libraries. Hey Max! You seem to share the same enthusiasm as I do. You have beat me to the bug fixing though... I think that if this is possible, it's a really great idea. Our abilities seem to match up well, because as you say, you have a (probably) deeper understanding of the math, and I (may) have more programming experience given that my major is computer science rather than minor. Yet I imagine we are both sufficiently proficient in both aspects. I guess we can wait and see what the good mentoring folks say, but if we can come up with complementary proposals where we each have separate and sufficient work, I imagine our chances are good! I should note, though, that there are many suggested projects I am interested in, which somewhat deters me from wanting to come up with my own ideas ;) Instead, I may just try to put together a killer proposal for the suggested project ideas. We'll see what happens. My point here is mostly that if you turn out to be more suited for the 3D tool, there are no hard feelings. We should both put forward multiple proposals if possible and it would be nice if we could both get in. Looking forward to seeing how this will play out, Gail

I was going to send this to inkscape users to help inform them about the Inkbar Barcode extension and ask if anyone know who was the author of Inkbar. I've had similar concerns before when writing scripts for the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) and some Javascript bookmarklets so these suggestions are based on a fair measure of experience, and some of things I wished I'd had to help me write my scripts. First there is the problem of translation. I'm not sure how we can help translate third party extensions/plugins/scripts/whatever*. I would guess that perhaps certain strings would keep coming up over and over again such as Angles, Detail, Gradient, Path, or something like that so maybe Inkscape could provide some kind of stock labels which would get translated once then any script writer could reuse them (something like how Gnome stock lables are supposed to work)? The other problem - and I've seen this a million times with GIMP scripts - is input checking. The inkbar script fails if the required 12 or 13 characters are not provided, which isn't very forgiving. (In the case of inkbar the rest could probably be padded with spaces.) In general scripts will require input checking, and hopefully this isn't something each script developer would need to writer their own collection of checks and tests for (because in that case testing is unlikely to happen at all). In the case of Python scripts (and any other scripts) there is something of a delay between the time the user sets the values and then hits OK (lets call that stage 1) to execute the script and then another delay before the script runs (stage 2). In practice this delay is usually quite short but delay and errors could be avoided if there was some immediate error checking as the user types to make sure a letter is not typed into a box where only numbers are allowed even before the OK button is hit (stage 1). After the OK button has been hit other checks may also be necessary. (Sorry very tired, I'll stop and try and explain better later, but I think I should probably have phrased things for developers in terms of preprocessing and postprocessing like on Web based forms as an example of how much easier extensions might be.) Anyway, I could do with some help contacting the author of the Inkbar barcode extensions and I hope to get a lot of use out of it (and help make it easier to use, provide an English translation, and anything else i can think of). I do believe it could gain inkscape a lot of attention in small businesses and more. (Useful as Inkbar could be for me I'm not saying I'd want to include it by default, not yet anyway. Inkscape for artists.) Off to see if I can modify the script to group the output to keep things tidy and stop them from falling apart.
