flattening transparency

I've been trying to educate myself about our printing problem by exploring cairo, librsvg, the uberconvertor and pdf in general. I stumbled across this document entitled, "Achieving Reliable Print Output from Adobe Applications when Using Transparency." http://partners.adobe.com/public/asn/en/print_resource_center/TXPGuide.pdf It seems to me that most all of the functionality needed for flattening out transparency already exists in Inkscape. A rather brute force method could be: 1) Replace all strokes with paths 2) Decompose all overlapping objects (this would be an additional boolean op, and it has been requested twice in my recent memory) 3) Replace all area's of overlapping transparency with a bitmap copy. 4) Replace all non overlapping transparency with the resultant color. Further optimizations would of course be possible. My exploration of cairo and librsvg has only been very casual, but I can't imagine that either of them will be well suited to this sort of decomposition task. But maybe with all of the recent excitement and advancement around vectors a good LGPL computational geometry library will pop up. Aaron Spike

The library is doing the right thing. In and of itself, any private use character could be printable or non- printable, and is not covered by the specs or such functions. If our application can deal with the Private Use Area (which I've verified we do), all we need to do is check for it. g_unichar_validate () then g_unichar_type(..) == G_UNICODE_PRIVATE_USE will take care of things the right way. Aside from other issues, this makes Inkscape's input behavior consistent with other systems, including the built-in OS X method. (Tricky to find, but easy to use once it's checked). Of course, this led me to wonder if we might want to warn upon insertion of a Private Use Area character. I'm attaching a quick sample that shows the use of two private area characters (the second being the Apple glyph). This is happy-happy for me here in Inkscape and FireFox.

Strange behaviour of translation

Hi, from some time ago I'm having trouble testing my translation of Inkscape. I update from svn and the po file is completely translated (only a few strings are missing, but they belong to a filter/effect). I do the usual $ ./configure --prefix=/var/opt --with-perl --with-python $ make $ make install And when I run /var/opt/bin/inkscape I find that many of the strings that used to be OK in previous versions are now in english. SCALE Inkscape Booth

Gareth, The Inkscape project would like to really thank you for the extra effort you made to get an Inkscape booth. We had lots of visitors and many were exposed to Inkscape for the first time. The show was so well run and the operations guys did an outstanding job with supplying us an extra table, extra power cords, and keeping internet connections going. picking items with mouse down

Michael, For months I've been annoyed by a number of small breakages in Inkscape behavior. Knots and handles remained highlighted after I release mouse; rubberband rectangle stayed on if I accidentally ended it on a node; some other small weirdnesses. Nothing fatal, but rather annoying, and a sign of something broken somewhere. Today I finally had time to do timed checkouts to find out when this thing started. What I found was your change back in August: http://svn.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/inkscape/inkscape/trunk/src/display/s… I understand your reason for this change, but as you see, by enabling your own tool, you disrupted the work of most other tools that relied on the old behavior. So I would really appreciate if you rethink this change and implement it in some other less disruptive way. For example, you can add a flag to canvas items that would make them receive events while mouse is down, and use that for your connector tool handles, while all other canvas items would by default not receive events as before. Or you can add a flag to canvas itself to switch it to "pick while mouse down" mode only when in connector tool. Or you can come up with something entirely different. Designing a poster with Inkscape

Hi all, I've been using Inkscape latest SVN extensively for a while to produce a scientific poster. My first words are: thank you so much! I've hesitated and tested inkscape, scribus, omnigraffle, adobe illustrator and even keynote (power point like program from apple) before choosing inkscape. I hoped to make the SCALE people benefit from my experience but it seems that there will be no actual poster there... too bad ;-) I don't know if it's good enough for the showcase section of the web site but here are some screenshots and small accompanying texts: -------------------------- A scientific poster has to be precisely organized, full of information yet visually attracting and should be printable at different scales (poster + handouts). Though Inkscape was not directly intended for such use, all these goals were achieved with it! http://jo.irisson.free.fr/dropbox/inkscape/ poster_publish_ghostscript.pdf [WARNING: big file. 7.5 Mb] The layers and outline mode allowed to work on this complicated file while keeping things responsive enough. When it got to the point that the whole file was just too big (over 5000 objects) it was cut down in pieces and all files were merged in the final document by import or copy/paste. http://jo.irisson.free.fr/dropbox/inkscape/poster_inkscape_outline.png The gradients and scripts from the new "Effects" menu helped to create an attractive look (well, attractive to me at least!). The bitmap tracing feature and open clipart library provided scale independent eye candy for some icons and other stuff. http://jo.irisson.free.fr/dropbox/inkscape/poster_inkscape_eye_candy.png The text was flowed into custom shaped frames so that it had a "clever" position with respect to the graphics. It was edited though the Text Tool palette which was easier on the eye and helped to focus on content rather than on layout for a while. http://jo.irisson.free.fr/dropbox/inkscape/poster_inkscape_text.png All the vector graphics were produced in SVG and were therefore completely editable within the poster which allowed to have a unified look (for the fonts, line width, colors etc.). The text was outlined to avoid font problems when printing on some other computer for 2mx1m output. The PDF was scaled down to A4 sheets in order to produce handouts. -------------------------- The above text gives you some the "Pros" of using inkscape for this work. Thank you again for all these functionalities which made my life easier (especially the latest additions which made it worth using SVN) and developed rather than restraint my creativity (well I'm a scientist but let say I can be creative anyway ;-) ). Unfortunately there are still some "Cons" :-). I listed them in decreasing order of importance: 1. An important problem was speed. As I mentioned, hiding layers and using the great outline mode helped but responsiveness was still not always optimal. I worked (remotely though, by X -query) on a big dual Xeon with lot of RAM. I encountered regular crashes (20 to 30 in the total editing time which is around 30 hours I think). Their impact was diminished by the auto saving feature though (thanks, I think I would have gone crazy without it). Many occurred at the end of a long editing process, with many documents open, but were not reproducible when I reopened the autosaved document and retry the same modification. I guess they are related to some memory failure somewhere. They often happen when adding layers of ungrouping complex sets of objects but I cannot be more precise sorry... PDF export would have been great for transparency. Well this is known but I mention it here to be exhaustive. 3. I missed some text editing features, especially for large flowed texts. I realize Inkscape is not intended for such use but justified text (through the GUI), hyphenation, columns and bulleted lists would have been useful. Furthermore, changing fonts would have been easier if the font list was searchable. In addition, the edition of text in the Text Palette was great but clicking the "Apply" button applies the modifications to the text AND applies the style selected in the other tab of the Palette to the whole text... which erases all modifications of the style of some words (like title in bold, some words in italics...). It would be great if this kind of "story editor" respected the styles already applied on the text and used them (like: writes in bold when editing after a word in bold etc.). I also could have used a "custom styles" section in the swatches panel where I could have imported styles (fill+stroke) from my document. Eventually I would vote for the square color previews in the minibar because I guess I am less agile than bulia with my pen and don't always aim right! I think it would be easier with squares. Hey all I am a student doing a 4th year project, studying the usability / workflow effects of a multi user vector graphics prorgam, at the time, I had not heard of inkboard, and planned on developing a prototype myself. then, after realising this was far too ambitious, I decided to add multi user functionality to inkscape, to realise it had already been done. Searching the net / mailing list archives it seems there isnt any up to date information on the current state of inkboards development. I have it compiled from the latest stable and cant get inkboard sharing with other users(different bugs show with loudmouth 0.17 / 1.0 / 1.0.1), I will try compiling the latest svn checkout today My plan is to take inkboard (either the rewrite or current release, depending on the rewrite state) and modify it to fit my requirements, due to the timescale on my project, and my lack of experience with open source development, I would not be looking to join inkscape development team immediately, if all goes well with my project, I would be happy to contribute my effort to inkboard after your review. So I would appreciate it if somone could fill me in on the current state of its development, and possibly point to where my problem is getting it working ( ill post details if needed ) Also any advice pointers on how to develop with inkscape would be appreciated, I am familiar with c++, however nowhere near this scale project, which I am familiar with in other languages (java, erlang) I will be looking to contribute to inkscape / inkboard in the future after my project is finished and I have some experience with its development Thanks Dale Harvey

Hi all, Yes I'm still here looking the code :-) What I want (apart from a working barcode plugin and clear image import options) is node labels. Currently when you select and drag nodes you have '0' information about what your doing to the node, what the node is ect ect. The first thing would be to add this information to the status bar, size of lines on either side of the node, angle of node, position on page ect ect. The second would be to have a view option which shows the above information as little labels that appear when you begin a drag operation. so next to the lines that the node effects would be size and curve information, a label near the node would tell you it's position and angle (maybe with on of those arcs to show what it is), now I know this is not useful to artist types because they don't so much design as just draw, but for creating regular complex shapes this information would be invaluable and having it near the object while the operation is being carried out would make it easy to understand as well as being closer to your eye.
