NEW: user's templates

Document templates (listed in File > New) are now first searched in the templates subdirectory of the user's profile directory (on Linux it's ~/.inkscape/templates), then in the system-wide Inkscape templates directory. This allows you to add your own templates on top of the list of standard templates, as well as override the default template with your own one (the default.svg in the profile directory has priority over the system-wide one). -- bulia byak Inkscape. units

Hi all, The good news is that svg2crs foo.svg | crs2xar > foo.xar is almost working. The bad news is that I can't figure out the "right way" to get inkscape units into inches. I found some constants in src/unit-constant.h which tell me that 90 units / inch is set at compile-time, but it seems like the svg file should contain something which makes that explicit. Of course, the svg spec only rambles on about user-agents determining something from their environment, but that seems way wrong for the uber-converter (what's the dpi of your terminal?) I guess svg was never intended to convey real-world dimensions? So, it looks like 90 units/inch is a good assumption, but I don't like to assume. Temp Mingw distribution is broken

Howdy, The build instructions for Win32 developers ( http://inkscape.org/win32/win32buildnotes.html) point to a zip file with a self-contained Mingw installation: <blockquote> *Note: Temporarily, I suggest that people use the preassembled Mingw working directory that we have assembled here<http://inkscape.org/win32/mingw-0510112028.zip>. It has the important pieces set up to compile the way we need them. Unzip it to c:\mingw.* </blockquote> This is great, except that the installation is missing some files. When I tried to build Inkscape on a fresh copy of Windows XP with this package, I encountered several build errors. crash of text and font dialogue

Question for snappers

To everyone who uses snapping in Inkscape: We plan to make _screen pixels_ (not px units) the default unit for snapping distance, so that e.g. snapping at 5 pixels remains the same distance on screen regardless of zoom. The question is, do you still need absolute (not zoom-independent) units for specifying snap distance? If so why? If there are no voices in defence of abs units, we will remove them altogether and use _only_ screen pixels. closepath?

Hi all, I noticed that inkscape will add a Lineto and explicit coordinate values to the end of any paths that have a closepath command (e.g. from an external source.) (I'm running 0.41 if that makes a difference.) This lineto does get followed with a closepath command, so I guess that would take care of the linejoin issue (though how to join at a zero-length edge seems rather indeterminate.) Is this a desired behavior? If so, why? Hi, I would like to use inkscape to make svg's with url links in them. Then I can make a diagram/overview of an open-source project with links to where various stuuf is found. Really something like a mapped jpeg in html. I have see here: http://blog.codedread.com/archives/2005/12/01/guide-to-deploying-svg- with-html/ that this is possible. Trouble translating extensions

Hi, I'm updating the spanish translation and I find that the extensions have been incorporated to the po. That is a Good Thing (tm)! but I have a problem with the translation of some of the effects, for example: "FretFind*": What does ET stand for in "FretFind Multi Length ET"? "Kochify": What do they do, and what does Koch have to do with it? "Summer's night": What does it do? Shakespearian reference? Extensions on win32

Hi, all, again! For some time now, people have been struggling with getting extensions to work on win32. They have been burdened with downloading Perl, Python, PyXML, etc and installing them. We have been carrying Perl and Python DLLs in our distro for the purposes of internal scripting for a while. The interpreters can be invoked ok, but we have not been supplying any supporting libs. I have been saying for months that we should have enough of Perl and Python in the library bundle to be able to provide this in the distro. However, I guess that I have been too lazy to actually work on it. Today I started experimenting with getting Python to work, and have had some success. I added a small class (win32 only) to dynamically add the ./perl and ./python subdirectories to the app-specific PATH for Inkscape. I also updated the Python subdir in the bundle to one that already has PyXML installed. This seems to work, as far as Python is concerned. I am in the middle of uploading a new build and a new library bundle with the new capability. The build is currently too big, with the entire Python lib included, but people can experiment with pruning things out of it to see what can be left out and get the size back down. It will be a while before it is uploaded, but it will be at http://inkscape.org/win32/gtk28-051226.7z Bob

OK, I've got to the point where I've converted my command line svg barcode tool to the inkscape extentions format and created an inx file. If you're interested, take a peek at the update to the "View|Show/ Hide" menu. The work to get generic things placed in a nice, dynamic manner still needs to get in, but it's a visible start. working towards a "happy-happy-bulia-option"

100% Zoom for default new document

Hi All, I've been tutoring inkscape around the place recently and one comment that keeps comming back is how small the text tool is by default. I couldnt reproduce the issue until I realised that the default new document is scaled down to show the whole area of the canvas-area the window. This means that the default font-size of 12pt actually appears quite small for all first time users ( who are only just discovering how to zoom and use all tools ) Picture this : You're a first time user who has executed inkscape and discovers the toolbar on the left hand side of the window. All tools work great however the font-size of the text tool is quite small making all text operations feel uncomfortable in comparison with the other tools. I propose we alter the default document to be viewed at a 100% scale so that all tools visually balance the way they would on the output media. what do you reckon?

This was in response to an email we sent them many months ago when they first broached the subject, where we requested that Inkscape be considered as a candidate as one of their test projects. Windows builds broken - help needed

This bug: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=604306&aid=1379454&group_… is reported unfixed again in both win32-snap/ and in Daniel Diaz' builds. However, Bob Jamison has fixed this long ago, and this fix is verified in the builds he has personally created. I just downloaded the Mac OSX build because a friend of mine recommended Inkscape, but when I open the application, X11 opens but nothing happens. I do get an Inkscape menu bar, but it only says Inkscape (no File, Edit, Window, Help menus...), and besides X11 doesn\'t list Inkscape as one of its applications. In fact when I quit X11, Inkscape remains open. Is there something I\'m doing wrong? Do I need anything else? I\'m running OS X 10.4.3, but as I\'m a total Unix newbie, I don\'t know how to compile anything, not to speak fixing something. Thank you very much for your attention and your time. Your work for the Open Source community is great, and I am grateful for there is people like you out there, interested in something else than money.
