The forward declaration in xml/xml-forward.h is (I think) unnecessary (actually the whole file is unnecessary and a bad idea, but I will rant about that separately). *PLEASE FORWARD* Open Clip Art Library Release 0.10 Announcement February 1, 2005 UTC — Release 0.10 of the Open Clip Art Library (www.openclipart.org) is now available for download on-line as an individual package: http://www.openclipart.org/downloads/0.10/openclipart-0.10.tar.gz http://www.openclipart.org/downloads/0.10/openclipart-0.10.zip This new package is 23MB and contains 3207 unique user-submitted files in several categories such as geography, symbols, holidays and people. You may also visit the Open Clip Art Library site at www.openclipart.org to browse or search all of the clip art imagery in our database and download files individually. What is significant in this release: 1) Our largest section of clip art, the flags collection, has been moved to the signs & symbols category. 2) We've also collected St. Valentine's Day clip art images for the upcoming holiday. 3) Improvements to our tools and processes continue behind the scenes. For the month of February, we are also trying to collect images related to "Black History Month." Does anyone object to having comments added to postscript print-outs? font crashes

I solved the Pango font crashes related to Font descriptions not having a family name specified (the "1979" font bug). I'm not sure what other bugs it'll fix, but I made a testcase for Pango and opened a bug for them. I set up code to work around it, or at least avoid the crash in a worse-case situation. -- Kees Cook @outflux.net

Fedora core 2 RPMs for inkscape dependencies

Hi all, I made FC2 RPMs for all the inkscape dependencies -- the reason is that I personally was quite annoyed when I first started toying around inkscape code because I needed to compile all these dependencies... these _should_ work on FC3 as well... String 'sanitizer' routine

I just dumped a simple routine into io/sys.h to return a 'safe' version of any given string. Inkscape::IO::sanitizeString The most immediate need is for those places where we might be displaying an error for a potentially bad path (such as when we're unable to create a file or directory). It will return a copy of the string as-is if it's valid UTF-8, otherwise it will walk through and escape all non-ASCII bytes. That should at least stop Pango crashes from hiding true problems or from turning warnings into crashes, like bug 1107305. Soo...... I'm hitting bed now, but anyone can feel free to try it out in a few critical places.

Beatwave Mobile Designer + Profiles

I found this app today while researching new places to send PR for releases. It implements profiles for different versions of SVG and is up to spec on animation, effects, object library, palettes, etc. I took screenshots of the app so that we can learn from their implementation. While I think that Inkscape is a great drawing tool, this one has SVG Basic, Tiny, and other version of SVG as profiles that are reconfigurable. You can even make your own. Also, the animation tools are very far out and usable. Use the screenshots as inspiration, but don't feel compelled to just recreate them. I sense that for Inkscape, the gradient editing is going to be one of the most fundamental and critically important pieces of functionality, and it will be well worth investing a lot of time in it. I would love to see the gradient editor become Inkscape's "Crown Jewel". :-) Bryce

Open SVG 2005 papers due MARCH 1

If anyone is interested in participating in OpenSVG 2005, papers are due MARCH 1. I had a paper accepted to the conference and cancelled once I found out that I would have to PAY for my own entrance into the conference. Only invited speakers are allowed in for free. That is unheard of for a conference.
