Inkscape Hackfest 2023

Dear all, we’re trying to organize a Hackfest early 2023 in Germany at a location outside Cologne (~15 km). While the location won’t lend itself to sightseeing tours or visiting a different bar each night (because it's not in the city, more on the country side), it’s special appeal is that we actually don’t have to leave the premises: team room, hotel rooms and excellent catering (breakfast, lunch, dinner) are conveniently all in one place. Ideal conditions for late night sessions under the influence of beer and good company to spark commits for make benefit glorious library of Boost Pointer Container! ('grep -A 5 glorious src/3rdparty/2geom/include/2geom/curve.h‘ and you will understand) More details will be revealed later, for now let’s see which week(s) to look at for possible booking and how many people are interested. Anybody build from source on RH EL 8 (or related)?

This question was first posted here (recently): https://inkscape.org/forums/beyond/anybody-build-from-source-on-rh-el-8-or-… It was kind of long, so please just read that and then reply here. Found this script in the current developer's instructions: https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape-ci-docker/-/raw/master/install_depende… Have not tried it yet. It lists Fedora but not any of the RHEL variants. Also, under Fedora poppler is not explicitly called out as a dependency, and from the first link, building poppler was a problem. Does the Fedora build not use poppler, or does it come in automatically from one of the other dnf commands? Godot Company

Dear PLC & Devel, This is an interesting bit of news. Godot, which is a member of the Software freedom Conservancy, and one of their largest other projects have had their leadership set up a for profit company called w4 games. This is ostensibly to develop Godot further. "Our mission is to strengthen the open source Godot ecosystem by providing companies with the commercial products and services they need." - https://w4games.com/ This is interesting to us here I believe. One of the conflicts I have personally with the SFC is how constraining and limited the SFC are for many of the things that would allow Inkscape to grow, invite commercial partners, hire developers, pay mentors, fund marketing research and design. Material things that we currently patch together with very kind support for key volunteers, but should be more properly resourced. Has anyone here had thoughts about developing a commercial company to develop Inkscape? I'm going to be reaching out to the new Godot business as well as a few of their contacts to see what their thoughts are and see what I can learn and if we can copy them. Best Regards, Martin Owens

Github Page and Repository

Howdy folks, I was looking at our repo on Github, and frankly, I like it. But, I know for some employers they're rating potential employees on their Github profiles (I don't agree with this, but it happens) and so not having the commits in Github reduces the exposure for that work. This probably effects our "interns" from Google SoC and Outreachy the most. For reference: https://github.com/inkscape/inkscape The problem we've had in the past is that when we had the repo on Github, people would fork it and create Pull Requests that no one would see or triage. Which would frustrate folks (understandably) and look poor on the project. The idea that I had is that we take the Inkscape repo, and we make a branch "github" that has the same README and graphic that is currently up on Github. We push the full Inkscape repo, but then set the default visible branch to the "github" branch. So anyone going to the repository sees exactly the same thing. Github doesn't seem to have a mechanism for disabling PRs, or forks. So we're relying on people actually reading the text. But I was curious what folks thought about the idea. Ted
