Mesh Gradients in Inkscape

Hi, I have just checked in to my private Coons Patch Mesh Gradient branch, code that allows the ability to create and edit mesh gradients. Warning: This code is a real Hack. It is known to segfault and eat kittens for lunch. It will need lots of reworking by real experts before one can hope to see it in Inkscape trunk (as well as dealing with the issue that meshes are not part of the SVG 1.2 standard... they have been accepted as part of SVG 2.0 but that standard is along way from being appearing even in a draft form). What you can do with the code: 1. Create a simple one patch square mesh the size of an objects bounding box. (Select the third button on the Gradient Tool-Tool Bar and the double click the object.) 2. Drag corner nodes (diamonds). 3. Change color of corner nodes. 4. Drag handles (circles). There is no indication of what handle belongs with which corner node or path so it can be confusing. 5. Divide a row or column of patches into two rows or columns. (Double click on the lines connecting corner nodes. Double clicking elsewhere may lead to a crash.) At the moment, the row or column is split down the middle. 6. Save the mesh. The mesh is saved in the proposed SVG standard format (highly likely to change). 7. Read in saved meshes. Some of what is missing: 1. Ability to undo node moves/color changes. 2. Ability to merge two rows or columns into one or delete edge rows or columns. 3. Ability to change paths between straight lines and Bezier curves. Handles are shown even for straight lines. 4. Display of Bezier curves (they are shown as straight lines). 5. Stability (I did tell you it will segfault, didn't I?). 6. Sane coding. 7. Properly handling of gradient copying. 8. Auto-creation of conical gradients or other non-square gradient types. 9. Output to PS/PDF/PNG(?) 10. Update to current trunk. Stash-OSX

Quick Update on the stash front, $kouiskas on dA has published a BSD Licensed OSX Uploader. http://kouiskas.deviantart.com/art/OS-X-Sta-sh-195250264 If anyone is interested in making the Inkscape (and/or gimp) da.stash uploader plugins work in OSX, then reusing this code will probably be the right was to go. PPA progress

Hi All, I'm back from my trip. I've made a couple of changes to the PPAs and things will hopefully be back to normal pretty soon. I have a couple of queries too... Note that Launchpad seems to be having some headaches with recipe builds at the minute. See https://bugs.launchpad.net/launchpad/+bug/884516 == Changes == * Dropped unneeded version specifier for libwp* dependencies in lp:~inkscape.dev/inkscape/debian-packaging * Enabled builds of the inkscape-trunk-daily recipe for Ubuntu Precise and Maverick. * Bumped epoch of package version naming scheme to allow natty builds after the earlier incorrectly-named version == Queries == * At the moment, the "stable" recipe is actually building the head of the lp:inkscape/0.48.x branch. Do we actually want to do this, or should we build inkscape 0.48.2? * Is there much point having a daily build of the stable package? Surely we only need to rebuild it when a new stable version is released? * Have we decided which Ubuntu versions we support? I think it's safe to drop Ubuntu Hardy now - Canonical no longer support it for desktop installations. I'll have to do some tweaking with the packaging code to build for Lucid, but it shouldn't be too difficult. * Thinking about it, do we really need two separate PPAs? As far as I understand it, we can get multiple recipes to build in a single PPA. We can just create separate source packages ("inkscape-stable" and "inkscape-trunk") and use them to build similarly-named binaries in the same PPA. Should be easier for users that way. Hi, Jasper and I were able to represent Inkscape at SVG Open 2011 in Boston thanks to financial aid from the conference organizers. I gave two talks, one on Inkscape's currents status and another on the state of Mesh gradients in the SVG working group. Jasper gave a talk on separating gradients from geometry. Papers/slides for the talks can be found at the SVG Open website (www.svgopen.org/2011). We also were able to attend an SVG working group meeting after the conference where we discussed mostly mesh gradients and connectors. There were many interesting talks despite attendance being a bit lower than last year (maybe due to the very high cost of hotel rooms in Boston?). A few notes from the conference: 1. Microsoft is finished with their SVG 1.1 implementation. They will not support SVG Fonts nor SMILE animation. SVG Fonts will also not be supported by Firefox (old news). There is a move to get SVG fonts packaged inside OpenType. This would satisfy the need to support complex writing systems like Hindi. There is broad interest in this solution as it would allow, for example, multi-color fonts. SVG 2.0 will also likely include an API to get glyph outlines so the shapes can be manipulated. Microsoft is interested in animation but wants to see SVG and CSS unite on a common animation framework. Currently CSS3 Animations lack the power of SVG SMILE (which is only a subset of the complete SMILE standard). Unfortunately, JavaScript cannot always be used due to security restrictions. 2. JavaScript has gotten wickedly fast. This was demonstrated multiple times, most dramatically by the D3 JavaScript data visualization library. The examples shown in the D3 talk were very impressive. My first reaction to this edit is that someone is afraid of some well stated reasons why Inkscape come up short for a particular individual. The posting has been on the wiki for over five years. Have the import/export capabilities of Inkscape been improved since then? That is, is it possible "Grant" cold now use Inkscape for his/her purpose? I wish we could get "Grant" to provide some contact information on http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/User:Grant and encourage him/her to try again if the capabilities have been improved. Wiki log in failure

My username is being changed from "NeoPhyte_Rep" to "NeoPhyte Rep" as I log into the wiki (the underscore becomes a blank). Hence, I can't log in. Has there been some change that would cause this to happen?
