Inkscape taken as a reference for vector illustration on OS X

Hi everyone, I thought I would share this fact with the whole development team: a french guy started a new vector design software called Drawberry[1] which basically leverages OS X technology (Quartz and CoreImage) to draw and export simple vector drawings. In its description, it takes Inkscape as a reference for a complete, high end vector design software: "With DrawBerry, you have all the possibilities the vectorial drawing offers you in a free, easy to use and powerful application. If you don’t need applications such Illustrator or Inkscape and you want to create some simple (or less simple) illustrations, DrawBerry is for you." I'm sure this has already happened plenty of times on Linux: on this platform, Inkscape is clearly the biggest player. However what I find interesting is that Drawberry is Mac OS X only by design, and that Inkscape, though being non native, GTK based and all, is still recognized as a big player on this platform, right next to Illustrator. This is quite an achievement. The ill-intentioned may argue that this could also means that Inkscape is becoming as bloated and unusable as Illustrator is but I'm sure that the amazing amount of new features currently brewing in Inkscape will finally settle down and find their place in a clear, intuitive UI... using LPEs (take 2)

Hello, The release is coming and I don't think the LPE tool is ready. I just wanted to notice some strange things that need to be discussed : 1. "Pattern along Path" is not a good name, it doesn't deal with "patterns" (on a svg point of view). 2. The "copy" problem see bug #179840 for description 3. flip, rotate or scale a LPE object : see bug #179842 for description And please watch this youtube video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0rx__lIlkg The Red path has a "bend path" lpe applied The green one is the same converted into path, it acts as a reference for us. This is the result we naturally expect for the transformation of the red path. 4. Once Johan coded a "width control line" for "Bend Path", I found it very useful but it has now disappeared. Is OpenClipart export robust enough for 0.46?

Hi all, The import from openclipart function is pretty slick, and works fairly intuitively. I like it. However, the export function seems clunky, and isn't working for me. The dialog UI for export is quite primitive and doesn't work in an intuitive fashion. It also currently has the following (quite critical) bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/179452 I feel the amount of UI work alone to get export up to snuff is beyond what can be achieved at this point in the release cycle (unless some hero can really pound on it in the next 1-2 weeks). I imagine there may also be a non-trivial amount of work under the hood, too. What are other people's opinions on the idea of disabling OCAL export for 0.46? Bryce

[NEW] blend modes moved to layers

Because SVG has problems dealing with blends on non-top-level children (in our case, that generally means non-layers), I've moved blend modes selection to the layers dialog and made it per-layer rather than per-object. If you have existing artwork with blend modes on individual objects, or want to create new artwork with blend modes on individual objects, that can still be done from the SVG filters dialog. -mental

It works fine for me. I'm opening most of the AI and PDF files successfuly. I don't know if it's simply a coincidence, but it seems to be more stable to drag and drop files instead of importing them via menu (i've experimented some core dumps doing that). But I can't reproduce that problem easily to be sure. The problem that is indeed reproducible is the one that happens when you import a PDF/AI in an empty document and try to save. Inkscape hangs and you can't save the file or close the application. But if you create a new document, create an object (a rectangle, for example) and save it BEFORE importing the PDF, it works fine. The error you get in the cli when you open the file in an empty document is this: (inkscape:9124): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: /build/buildd/glib2.0-2.14.1/gobject/gsignal.c:1654: signal `response' is invalid for instance `0x9d1d458' Anyone can confirm this? I'm filing a bug report about this right now. Regards, Gez.

Printing

Is printing supposed to be working in rev.16673, or is it a known work-in-progress? It simply sends the CPU to 100% until inkscape is killed from the command line on my Linux machine; closing Inkscape using the normal Quit menu item is not enough. Thomas

Call for Freeze Exceptions

Hi all, Tomorrow we're going to be progressing to the next phase of the release, but beforehand I want to check if anyone is doing feature development work and wish for a freeze exception. This isn't necessary for bug fixing work - if you're just doing bugs, please keep on trucking. Also, this is not for *new* features - if you are starting on any new ideas (even if they're just enhancements to existing features), PLEASE do this work on a branch, or locally; do not commit them to SVN head. So, if you're working on a feature, can you please tell me at this time? Also please report: * Current status * Anticipated date of completion * Issues that must be solved before release I'll assemble these exception requests into a list, so as people watch the SVN traffic and see changes that are not merely bug fixes, they can use the list to see if the changes are acceptable. If you're not on the list, your changes will risk being backed out. I don't anticipate rejecting any exception requests, although if the anticipated date is too far out, or the list of issues is lengthy, we may need to pow wow on how we can put additional focus on getting the thing ready in time. NEW: cross-platform print dialog

Using the Cairo renderer that was written for PDF and PS export, I've hooked up the GTK print dialog system. This provides Inkscape with a cross-platform printing dialog (finally). In the past, we have had two methods of printing: vector and bitmap (for things that don't render correctly in PS). In the new print dialog, the "Rendering" tab exists to control this. In "Cairo" mode, it uses the Cairo renderer, and in "bitmap" mode it uses the PNG export code to populate a Cairo surface. The bulk of the new code is in: src/ui/widgets/rendering-options.* src/ui/dialog/print.* src/print.cpp There is some strange behavior in bitmap mode (offset from origin) that I haven't narrowed down yet. -- Kees Cook @outflux.net
