Crash on Win XP, cannot get backtrace

Hi, On opening one of my own recent Inkscape SVG files on my Windows XP machine at work, Inkscape apparently gets stuck in a loop (100% CPU usage). When I subsequently click on its main window, it crashes. It looks like it is stuck while redrawing the screen, as I can see part of my desktop and part of my SVG file. When starting through gdb however it also gets stuck, but it won't crash. How do I get some useful information from gdb to help debugging? Currently, I only have "unknown software exception 0xc00000fd" at "0x672ddbd9". I'm running Inkscape0709022056, as provided by ishmal. Diederik

menus

Hi, With lots of additions overal last year menus become quite busy. A couple of observations. 1. We have both "Effects - Images" and "Effects - Raster" menus. Do we keep "Images" submenu for any possible effect not altering contents of raster images or just embedding/disembedding? If it's emdedding related only, should we probably then rename submenu? btw, I'm not really sure that the current way of dealing with embedding/exporting raster files in SVG document really optimal. See, opening an arbitrary file I can't tell if an image used there is embedded or not without looking into source code.There's no indicator to tell that. An improved hint in status bar could probably be the first step in the right, IMO, direction. Something like "Embedded image A x B size in layer N" and "External image A x B size in layer N". What do you think? 2. Text case altering commands live in "Effects - Text". Should it probably belong to "Text" menu? As user of applications like Scribus or OpenOffice.org (sorry, Scribus guys :)) I don't perceive those as effects --- this is rather altering of text that its look'n'feel. Same goes for "Replace text..." --- to me it rather belongs to "Edit" or "Text" menu, not speaking about some kind of clash with "Edit - Find...". Comments? :) Alexandre

Connecting to signals

I've had some struggle in signals and stuff. I found this in the code: _close_button.signal_clicked() .connect(sigc::mem_fun(*this, &LayerPropertiesDialog::_close)); (dialogs/layer-properties.cpp) Why is this connection not saved? Is that not necessary? It seems to me that this is buggy. When the layer window is deleted, the connection is not disconnected and when the signal is emitted it will call _close with a corrupt "this" value. (this will never happen probably because the button is on the dialog itself, but still) Thanks for some light on this, Johan P.S. Why is there a function signal_clicked() to get the signal? In my code I just make the sigc::signal public (see /ui/widget/random.h). Is that bad?

build break on 2geom change

It appears that as of tonight the build is broken due to a missing dependency. The update to the 2geom code brought in a dependance on gsl. If someone could look into that and then update configure.ac with a check for the needed version, that would be helpful. Just FYI, on a Mac here I have version 1.8.

Changing layer opacity affects other layers

I'm creating a set of amimated cursors which involves exporting each frame from Inkscape. One of the animations involves reducing the opacity of a number of layers for each frame. I'm finding when I change the opacity of one layer then select another layer this layers opacity will also change. Quite frustrating as I've exported the frames for an animation 5 times now and each time I've found there's been a mistake with opacity on a layer :) I'm not sure if the problem is related to the amount of time Inkscape takes to redraw the image after changing opacity - I think if I select the next layer before the redraw is finished the setting is carried across. I've used blur so the redraw can be a little slow. Odd size of imported bitmaps

Hello, I've imported a 400x400 pixel TIFF image into an inkscape drawing, and it comes out as 112.89 x 112.89 mm, which translates to a resolution of roughly 90 dpi. Where does this number come from? Shouldn't inkscape honour the dpi information that is embedded in the TIFF image? Alternatively, for images that don't have a "built-in" resolution, inkscape should ask for a "native" size of the image or use a changeable default resolution. Also I noticed that some imported images have width and height xml attributes while others don't. All this came to my attention when I worked with a SVG file with 20 imported images of about 10MB each (TIFF uncompressed) which bogged down my computer. I tried substitutung the TIFFs with scaled-down (by .25) working copies, which worked fine for those images that had width and height attributes (the others came out a fourth of the size), I'm just wondering how Inkscape arrives at the "native" size of an image, and I wanted to know if others agreed with my notion that in a vector drawing program the resolution of imported bitmaps was of high importance. It would also be nice if Inkscape could somehow reload image properties if the original bitmap had changed (by scaling or cropping, for instance). Thanks, --Dan

Hey Josh, (CC to devel) The pentool bug is a good one :), yep I only thought of using the node tool for editting paths doh! Stacking is definitely planned. But... at this moment it will not help you a lot. The problem is that the path-along-path effect has its inputs switched around: path-along-path: svgd input = path to put something along (can only be one path, probably cannot contain gaps or anything) parameter input = path to put along the other path The stacking will work like this (because this is simple to implement [1]): output of one effect goes to the *svgd input* of the next one. As you can see, this will not function as desired for stacking curve stitching and path-along-path. "So why is path-along-path made this way? It is also not handy for applying it to groups!" The problem now is that only the svgd input can be editted on-canvas. The parameter paths cannot. So imagine having that fish bend along a curve, and then not being able to nicely edit that curve :S On-canvas editting of path parameters has very high priority on my list, but it is not so easy. This curve stitching thing was really easy to implement (just look at the code), and it seemed fun :-) Cheers!
