Basically, it works by calling the effect repeatedly as you make changes. However on windows this involves opening a dos window for python to run each time, which happens 4 to 20 times a minuet, which is darn annoying... oh, and the other problem it has, is when changing a value by using a spinbox, it seems to lose control and it will keep registring the same event so the value will change to the min/max value of the spinbox depending on which arrow you press. These two bugs combined lead to a lovely loop of open an effect, say jitter nodes dos window opens change value of spinbox by using arrow loop * 100(0)? incress spinbox value by 1 open dos window to rup python interpreter, stealing focus and on top close python window, retuning focus to UI incress spinbox value by 1 open dos window to rup python interpreter, stealing focus and on top close python window, retuning focus to UI end loop... preview checkbox, again

Ted, Yesterday for the first time I tried live-update effect on a large slow document (about 1Mb with lots of blur etc). It was a torture. I could not even adjust the number of paragraphs because it froze on every change for a long time. You made the effects themselves asynchronous - that is nice. But in situations like this, the actual effect run takes only a small fraction of the total time; a lot more time is spent by Inkscape itself on saving and then reloading the large file. And since Inkscape itself is not asynchronous at all, this freezes everything including the effect dialog. Sorry for pounding on it, but I think I've proven enough by now that the checkbox must be there and off by default :) -- bulia byak Inkscape. Draw Freely. http://www.inkscape.org

Async script extensions

Hey all, So I've finally got my work on switching the scripting extensions over to being a call with parameters instead of a parsed string on the command line. At the same time I've made them asynchronous, which has some nice side effects. Basically, this all involved reworking large portions of the scripting code -- which brings the possibility of breaking things. Two areas in specific that I'm worried about: -- win32. Some of the functions I've used had notes on what does and doesn't work on win32, but the documentation was sparse, and I'm concerned it was incomplete. -- internationalization. I know we've had problems in the past with this code and different locales of filesystem and UI. I believe I kept all that code in place -- but history means that those with the complex setups should be extra observant when noticing how their SVN builds run. So other than those concerns, enjoy everyone. I hope this will add a lot of usability to the scripts, especially some discoverability to the parameters. Have fun, Ted

spirals

Hi, A question in a design forum on drawing exact logariphmic spirals in One Well Known Application :-) triggered my interest to a way doing same thing in Inkscape. In fact Inkscape operates in other terms than all the geometric sources I read so far overnight. Divergence (or Linearity) sounds very much like Ratio, but 1,618 simply won't work for any amount Turns I've tried :) Apparently , if I divide Turns by 0,618 and input the result into Divergence, the resulted spiral will look pretty close to a Fibonacci spiral, but not exactly it. This brings me to a point we I don't quite understand what I'm doing :) Does Inkscape simply lack documentation to help people do the calculations? Can Inkscape make it easier for users by providing presets that would lock existing Spiral tool's options to some ratio so that one could pick, say, hyperbolic or archimedean or logarithmic spiral and draw as many turns as (s)he wishes? Hey xl cheese, I'd recommend doing a clean checkout again from "https://inkscape.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/inkscape/inkscape/trunk" instead (note the inkscape at the beginning). That will ensure you won't run into the issue a few of our devs recently have. Also, since you're on Ubuntu, I'd recommend pulling up a terminal and doing "sudo apt-get build-dep inkscape" which will pull down the dependencies for you. I will be honest that I can't offer anything good advice-wise in trying to get eclipse to work as I've never used it. Gail, do you want to chime in? However, if you want to know the standard way to build (again in a terminal), after the initial checkout or when I make clean I do this: "svn up && ./autogen.sh && ./configure && make && sudo make install". Then I just typically do "svn up && make && sudo make install" after that. I also CCd the devel-list as well to get others input to perhaps help with Eclipse (and it's a good place to ask development related Qs in general)... Hopefully the above is at least a little helpful for you... Hi, The "Make commands toolbar smaller" option from Preferences dialog seems to make the opposite effect: the toolbar is smaller when the option is disabled. Is this intentional? Am I the only one to see it? Alexandre

Selector keybinding change

* Draging the scale handles with Alt now scales selection by an integer factor, i.e. up to 2, 3, 4, etc. times the original size or down to 1/2. 1/3, 1/4, etc. of the original size (in any of the two dimensions independently). This replaces the old and rarely used "slow" scaling mode with Alt. Admittedly this use of Alt is not very consistent with others - I would prefer to use Ctrl for that but it's already used for preserving ratio. At least, this mode is much more useful than the Sodipodi-era, very counterintuitive old "slow" mode where a move of the mouse pointer resulted in 1/10 of the displacement. -- bulia byak Inkscape.
