"move selection to layer above/below" in wrong menu

Hey guys! I just stumbled across that fact, that "Move selection to layer above/below" is in the layers menu, while I think it would make a lot more sense to be in the object menu (although that is already rather full) since you actually do not modify the layer but the selection. 1.: What's your opinion on this? 2.: Should I file a bug about it? Backwards compatability of grids in InkscapeSVG

Because I made a new grid framework to better accomodate new grid types, I had to put the definition of grids elsewhere in SVG. If I'll remove the old grid code now, the 'old' grid in Inkscape SVG's will not be read, Inkscape will think no grid will be there. Aaron thought up a nice idea: to make an extension to convert old grids to new grids; then the codebase is not cluttered with compatability code, and we can easily remove the extension when it is deemed ancient. Ideas? Should this be sent to the user maillist aswell? Regards, Johan

Hello I am Diego Botelho of Argentina, I am Graphical Designer and I use Inkscape among other free tools with operating system Linux (distribution TUQUITO an Argentine distribution in which I am part of the Staff in the grafica of the system). Gustaria to collaborate to me making some bellboys for the program so that it changes the aspect and that it also arrives by the Vista, it is not that this badly, only is that in all the versions always there are changes very good but never of graph (icons of arrow, node, zoom lens, etc) gustaria for knowing to Me where I must send the graficos that do so that they see them and they decide if to use them or no, it is only an idea and a contribution but of toso those that integrate the list. Build questions

Thanks to the helpful hint about btool, I was able to build inkscape on Win32 this morning. Questions: 1) does anyone know if MinGW 4.0 build from here http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Win32Port can peacefully coexist with the official MinGW package? I mean is it safe to unzip that MinGW directory right on top of the MingGW 3.4.5 installed by the official package from here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=2435 My main concern is that the 4.1 package is missing some things I'd like to have like g77 and gdb. 1b) [OT] Ok, what's up with MinGW releases? Why isn't gcc 4.1 available from mingw.org itself? 2) In the version I built, the Selection tool handles come out looking like trashed and/or misaligned memory. Is this a known issue? Both sets of handles (scale and rot/shear) are messed up. All other handles for the other tools seem to be ok. (To repro, hit 'p', draw a curve, hit space.) 3) I can't seem to load any images in my build (like .bmp, .png etc.). [Using the import menu item] 4) "Save window geometry" doesn't. Inkscape always opens up at the same too-small default size whether I have the preference set or not. (That's true for the current release as well as my SVN build). Where would I start looking to go about fixing that? --bb

Actually, unzipping it into C:\MinGW4 was what I did initially because I didn't want to clobber my existing setup. But I wasn't able to compile anything that way because g++ failed to find any of its headers (like <iostream> etc). After renaming the directory to C:\mingw everything worked fine. So I'm pretty sure the C:\mingw path is embedded somewhere in the MinGW 4 package I downloaded from the net. (This is the one I'm using: mingw-4.1.2-070401) For now I've resorted to just renaming the directory depending on whether I'm working on Inkscape or something else. Times like these I really wish Windows had symlinks. --bb

Escaping $ in commandline parameters

I just fixed a bug: string parameters were not escaped causing problems when using " . Also $ bugs on linux, because it tries to replace $... with a defined variable; if there are other operating systems that need escaping of $ aswell, please add them to the #ifdef in /src/extension/parameter.cpp line 19. I only know Linux and Windows and cannot check for other operating systems. Maybe a make check something should be added for this! (i don't know how, sorry) Cheers, Johan

This page http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32_inkscape_org/win32buildnotes.html says that to build Inkscape for win32 I should compile with: make -f Makefile.mingw This file doesn't exist in the fresh checkout I made from SVN less than an hour ago. (Except for in some seemingly minor subdirs: F:\usr\pkg\inkscape\head>find . -name Makefile.mingw .\src\dom\Makefile.mingw .\src\pedro\Makefile.mingw Is there some way I can generate it, or someplace I can download it? --bb
