Problem with gtk?

I've had a problem with inkscape fairly frequently when I start it the first time after starting X (I use XFCE on gentoo). It doesn't happen every time, but frequently, and if I restart X, it usually goes away. The problem is that I can't actually edit anything on the canvas, whether I open a new file or an existing one. All the buttons and dialogs behave correctly - except they don't do anything on the canvas. Is this a known problem? It's persistent for me through several versions, and I'm using both .44 and .45-pre1. Right now, however, I've just upgraded to XFCE4.4 and gtk2+-2.10.9 and I can't edit the canvas at all in either version, even after rebooting the whole computer. I'm not sure if I should recompile inkscape, but it doesn't seem right (I upgraded gtk from a previous 2.10 version, not sure exactly which). I searched bugs and didn't see anything like this. I also have a few questions regarding certain strings. untranslatable strings ---------------------- "Note: The file extension is appended automatically." ("Extract One Image" extension) "This effect measures the length of the selected path..." ("Measure Path" extension) "Requires two selected paths. The second must be exactly four nodes long." ("Envelope" extension) "Fractalize" ("Fractalize" extension) "Subdivisions" "Smoothness" "This effect bends a pattern object..." ("Pattern along path" extension) "Single" "Single, stretched" "Repeated" "Repeated, stretched" "Snake" "Ribbon" appears in English, even if translated -------------------------------------- "None" (fill/stroke widget on toolbar, status bar and in prefs) "Unset" "The following functions are available:..." ("Function Plotter" extension) questions --------- "Trace along the boundaries of reduced colors" -- does "reduced colors" mean "less colors" here? "RGB Barrel" -- what does it mean? "Isotropic scaling (uses smallest: width/xrange or height/yrange)" -- does this mean: "use the smaller of those two values"? Inkscape Booth at SCALE

First, does anyone else who cannot make it have any good slides they would like us to show at either the booth or BOF ? Especially on advanced features ? Booth notes: 1) Let's remember to bring a digital camera this year to post some booth photos (I'll try to remember to bring mine). 2) Any luck with drawing tablets ? 3) I'll bring my old LCD projector - does anyone have a better one ? 4) Let's all remember to bring power strips. 5) Does anyone have a 19" monitor ? If Wal-Mart still has them on sale for $199 maybe I'll get one. 6) our BOF is scheduled for Sat night 19:00 - 20:00. Shall we plan our dinner for Fri or Sat after BOF ? or both :) 7) We need to turn in our list of booth (free pass) volunteers. So far it looks like Ted, Josh, and myself. Anyone else coming ? Jon Cruz ? Ted, did you need a booth pass or do you get one as a featured speaker ? Josh, does your wife need a full pass or just an expo pass ?

Inkscape 0.45-pre2 Released

The second preview release of Inkscape 0.45 is now released. The changes between pre1 and pre2 are mostly translations plus a few bugfixes. Hopefully we will not need any further pre-releases before the final release. Yes, this would be superior functionality. Also, would be good for the color of the mask outline to correspond to a generic layer color. So, similar to illustrator, each of our layers should have corresponding selection color which we could use for this type of notification. Also would be great to have ui to allow for selection of this layer selection color. What do you guys think? If you find yourself with some offtime, I'd like you to check out my work on the gradient tool for 0.46. There are two issues that must be addressed in the next prerelease. 1. We need GTK at least version 2.10.7. Reason: in that version they fixed bug which causes a pretty bad crash in Inkscape: 374378 Crash as GTK tries to blink cursor in defocused spinbutto... Take the latest from http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/sources/gtk+/2.10/. 2. We really need to package numpy (numeric python) with python on windows, otherwise the perspective extension does not work.
