I have noticed that FOSS is basically an "anarchist" way of developing software. Some "natural order" is required. Fractal art is also "anarchist", but it's beautiful. Imagine a base InkScape cross-platform package which depends solely on GTK. Now visualize each "fork" as a flavour. A fork in the tree is one for the 3 most used platforms: First Desktop (Macintosh) Free Desktop (GNOME, KDE, the "light desktops") Propietary Desktop (Windows) that's 3 main forks. but let them happen. just keep the same versioning (ie: no preference among platforms). The Adobe folks said something wise, "use the software of your choice in the platform of your choice". Let's grow up, propietary software was never "evil" and there's a triad of main platforms. A triad of main flavours. Each platform has it's own "quirks", but that make each unique. I propose a 4th platform: ZenSUI It's experimental, based on pure OpenGL 2.0, with "legacy dependancies" of GTK and Qt. It will be paid software libre, because I don't want to stop eating. It will NOT use either the desktop methaphor nor the 3D ui metaphor. It will be a 2D, Unix-only, OpenGL-based user interface. It will be Simple, Transparent, Consistent User Interaction (a SUI not a GUI, and not a CLI) It will allow configurability for the 3 "main personas": developer.designer.user and it will use less than 1 GB of memory in a flash drive connected through eSATA (that's the base "ZenSUI computer"). ZenSUI will use an "information metaphor"; it's information centric (no difference between local and external, the user should know that). It will be the first peaceful-anarchist-corporation*1 of 150*2 members or less. And I, as founder, am the first member. There's room for 149 eager, talented software and interaction producers. The name of this community is ZenSUI.Net (not the generic .Net escuse of a language that made Microsoft). OpenUsability and Inkscape

Hi all 2 years ago i opened and inkscape account on openusability. Nothingimportant happened there until last weeks. A usability student wants to work on inkscape. We have 2 or 3 weeks before she is ready to work on it, and then make proposal and studies during 3 months. We, me and bryce, already made some proposals to her, but anyone can send me more. It can be usefull one day ;) Plus, we may need some help to implement UI proposal. With some help at the beginning i guess i could work alone with her at the end, any contributor are welcome. cedric

Inkscape talk

At the weekend I'm down to give a talk about SVG and Inkscape at my local LUG (Hampshire, UK). Several members of the LUG have expressed an interest, in that they don't know Inkscape but they've heard lots of good things about it. Videos of the talks are recorded and made available through our website and on Google videos. I was just wondering if anyone had any insightful comment they might wish me to convey (about SVG or Inkscape), or perhaps a favourite tip for using Inkscape? I'd be particularly interested in anything which might leave people with the urge to install themselves a copy and have a go. I'd also like to take this opportunity to congratulate everybody for their hard work in getting 0.45 out of the door. Dan

win32 official packages update

I see that some archives for win32 were uploaded last night. Great! I've removed the pre2 exe from the dl page because I think it could do much more harm than good. I hope it being there didn't disuade our win32 packager from uploading an exe for 0.45.0. Oh btw, who is making these win32 packages?!? :-) It would be really great coordinate with you on the matter. There are some win32 packages stuck in the upload queue too. One pre2 build from one of Bryce's attempts. And I notice a 0.45 zip. Is this zip there because the currently active zip is truncated to 1/10th the appropriate size? Whoever you are. Whatever is going on. Please email me and we'll get this settled. Aaron Spike

1. Do not start the release process until the packagers from all major platforms report that the current SVN builds and works without major problems. 2. Hi all, To know each other a little better I propose to ad a section of "who made Inkscape" @ www.inkscape.org Since it's Free and Open Source Software (aka FOSS), we don't "get paid". More or less, I don't believe in an ego (read Minsky for more info about the buddhist concept of no-self/anata)... BUT one of the ways of "getting paid" in the hackers (as in software developer of software libre) world is to: be recognized as good software developers. ie: I can put the following line: "human-machine interface software developer of inkscape" in my resume (Curriculum Vitae) to get a job... since (I) "have the habit of eating" ^_^ I propose that we elect some developers and put one 512x512px mini-blog image (at most). I chose to be the last entry (in this year, 2007 CE). ...I don't care about ego. (...flam3s over the Net pass through emptyness, aka insults to me are ignored so don't even try =P). This images can link to our personal websites... etc ...we lose ~75% of communication when chosing "plain text communication" instead of "real-world personal in-the-same-place communication" so, any questions about this simple idea? -- http://www.zensui.org

Envelope extension fix

Hi, As I reported earlier, the Envelope extension (AKA Summers Night) is broken in 0.44 and 0.45. I finally got time to look at it an the fix is trivial, just deleting a line. Three other lines can also be deleted as they are no longer necessary. It was due to a flip in the y coordinate. Patch attached. Tav

Since a page is a container/box for information (in this case an image) and Inkscape uses standards (SVG, XML) it is apropiate that: Inkscape uses a simplified W3C box model. in the clean/proposed version of the ui (which is color-coded) the following new/changed paremeters are: Background Color = black // Width = variable /* this can be 2 values, width and height ...but they're better as variables */ Border Color = green Border Width = 2px (this paremeter is optional, or can be user-selected to Zero width) Border Height = 2px Box Color = white Box Width = 1000px // aka "page" width Box Height = 700px // aka "page" height favorite-most-used way-of-measure = pixel (...or milimeter, etc) I know Java and some C++ so I can help with some code too... any feedback about the User Interface/Interaction for the new milestone of Inkscape?
