Note that it is not that hard to get correct builds from 'make': only Makefile.mingw.common has to be updated a bit which was real easy. My question is therefore: should this be done in future and be committed to SVN? Maybe only for this release for the last time? And then after the release, delete all mingw makefiles, so there is no confusion anymore?

Schedule for 0.45 release branch

For this release, we're doing things a little differently in that we'll be tagging the release branch earlier in the process than usual. This is primarily to enable developers not focusing on the release process to continue with development work. During hard freezes we require use of the patch tracker instead of svn anyway, so it shouldn't hurt to return svn to regular developer access anyway. So, we're planning on tagging the release branch this weekend - perhaps as early as Friday. The main requirement is that we want to be able to pass 'make check'. Ideally, I'd like to see us pass on all platforms (Linux, Win32, and OSX), but at least we must pass on Linux. Bryce

NEW: perspective extension

I have committed the Perspective extension from our patch tracker. Like Envelope, it morphs one path to fit another path with 4 nodes, but it does it differently using with perspective distortions. One thing it requires is the Numeric Python package. Since we're carrying our own Python on Windows, can we add it to the package too? Otherwise this extension is unusable on Windows. how to detect a selected node in an extension

Hello, I try to do some manipulations on paths within a python extension. As I saw a selected object is passed as argument with its id to the python script. Now I am interested in finding out which node of a path is selected in single-node-manipulation mode (don't know the exact name in English). Is there a way to get an list of selected indices or something like that? Thanks Werner Arnhold

Inkscape 0.45-pre0 released

This is the first pre-release of Inkscape 0.45. The purpose of this release is to give packagers a package to test their procedures on, so we can identify where problems are in time for the pre1 release. Much work still remains before Inkscape 0.45 can be finalized. Download here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=93438&package_id=9911… Please experiment with creating packages (rpms, debs, zips, etc.) of this package and report any problems to the bug tracker. Here's the issues I already know about: * NEWS - release notes are not yet complete; we'll replace this with the finalized version later * About screen is missing. Pending contest. * keys.de.html is empty. This file was missing, and I created a 0-byte file just so make distcheck will pass. There is a bug in the bug tracker about this. * For win32 there is a new 'buildtool' for building Inkscape, however the dist packaging notes in Wiki still reflect the old build approach. If other steps should be performed, someone please update the wiki to document the correct steps for the new system. Bryce

Postscript input extension and skencil

Hi, The current PostScript input extensions are dependent on the skconvert utility (it uses pstoedit -f sk to produce sketch format), itself part of Skencil, a "competing" (? :-) ) vector drawing project. As the Fedora inkscape maintainer, this dependency is somewhat problematic. From a distribution/packaging perspective, it is difficult to justify a hard dependency between inkscape and skencil as skencil is itself another desktop application and also fairly large. It is also somewhat non-intuitive and confusing to the end-user (and as a side-note, skencil might be dropped eventually because it's still based on gtk1). Now, I would still like to have PostScript import work out of the box as that's a feature that was requested by several users. So my questions: why the skconvert dependency ? Are there any alternatives ? pstoedit has many output formats (such as plot-svg using GNU libplot), is it possible to use a different one to achieve the same result ? -denis

interruptible display

Hi, While testing current Inkscape from trunk I immediately ran into a feature that can easily be perceived as a bug: dragging a gradient slider on 200/400% I see rectangles inside an object come and go all the time. On #inkscape I was told that this is the result of interruptible display introduced to improve responsiveness. My guess is that users might not understand that this is a feature. I see two ways to minimize public confusion: 1. Provide a better explanation in Release Notes. 2. If possible, make this behavior toggleable, ideally -- introduce a Xara-like "Rendering tradeoff" slider ;-) What do you think? Alexandre

FYI, there's a filter bug we need to fix: http://sourceforge.net/support/tracker.php?aid=1632748 All SPFilter children are getting cast to SPGaussianBlur regardless of their actual type. Incorrect rendering + potential crash. -mental
