Char * file names

Hi, all, After digging around the code looking for a particular bug, I was struck by the fact that although Inkscape went through the "c++ification" process almost 2 years ago, a great many of the classes are still merely wrappers of the legacy code. One thing I noticed in particular was that char *'s are still used in most of the code for the storage of file names and xml string data. Wouldn't this cycle be a good time to convert these to Glib::ustring? We would get at least three benefits: 1) A uniform container and set of methods for Unicode data 2) Greater pointer safety if we can avoid countless explicit alloc/frees. 3) It would be harder to go out of bounds, since the string carries its size. And if you do, it is an exception, not a malloc or stack corruption. I'm not talking about the GC'd stuff, but those so frequent snips of code like this: if (uri) g_free(uri); uri = g_strdup(newuri); In addition, shouldn't a document's "DocumentBase" uri (and resources it references) be a real W3C URI, or even an IRI? That way we can get a consistent method for referring to things, rather than always calculating paths explicitly all over the code tree. Just a suggestion! :) bob

Gentoo inkscape ebuild

Hello, I have placed an ebuild file for Gentoo users at http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/CompilingGentoo This has many changes with respect to all previous ebuilds available through rsync or the Gentoo bugzilla, so can be considered the most up-to-date version. I would call it our official version but maybe people want to test first. Please do. I intend to maintain this file. It is also uploaded to bugzilla. ralf

If xslt processing is going to be done in the final user machine, we should not expect the user have even Java. And Inkscape is already dependent upon libxml2/libxslt (am I wrong?). So, it seems there are three things that can be done: 1.- Have the user to install Java and Saxon to see the documentation. 2.- Achieve the same things that Java and Saxon do using libxslt and some extension module. 3.- Pregenerate all the svg help files and use them pregenerated, as is being done till now. I'm not very fond of 1. Using 3 excludes the option of a thin format for documenting extensions (perhaps as part of .inx files). So I'm going to look closer at 2. Hi, It'd be better to label the feature as beta or even alpha. since no one is maintaining the code at the moment (unles thats changed) and it's not compleat in it's support. Hi there, Sorry for the late reply (and for my previous message which was sent by mistake:P)... I had voted yes for the merging before on Jabber. It seems it's been done already anyway. I don't think there will be much instability caused by filters development, and it will be good for us to get some feedback from others. As for what's been done until now, Niko made a good synthesis. Most of SPFilter and SPGaussianBlur is implemented, and next steps should be fixing any missing bits of these classes and integrating them with Niko's visualization part. Things started a bit slowly but seem to be speeding up now and on the right way. I'll keep you informed on progress... Hugo

Unless some new showstopper bugs are found, I think pre4 should be OK to release as 0.44. There's one thing to be done before that, however. I really don't like the new About screen. I think it's below the level of quality we've established in past versions. Am I alone in that? Andy said he would work on a new one - is there any progress on that? -- bulia byak Inkscape. Releasing Inkscape 0.44 soon?

Cmarqu has pointed out that C't magazine is running an article in their next release promoting the Inkscape 0.44 release. This comes out in 2 days. This means we have a huge opportunity here if 0.44 can be finished and windows packages made available by June 24th. If we fail to achieve this, we will probably greatly disappoint a lot of readers who will come looking for this release. As I understand it, there are no bugs left holding up the 0.44.0 release, and it's only cosmetic issues at this point (e.g. about screen tweaks). I know for an art tool that getting cosmetics well polished is important, but I would like to strongly suggest we release ASAP, and put a big priority on getting Windows and OSX packages generated of that within the next two days, so that we can take advantage of the C't publication. We have planned a 0.44.1 exactly with the intention of avoiding allowing small issues like these from delaying a release. Let's go with whatever is easiest for the about screen for now, and leave perfecting it for 0.44.1. Bryce
