Here's my first crack at fresh copy for the about dialog; I've not tried to make it fit in the available space yet. Basically I am imitating the style of Victorian-era advertising copy, without making claims TOO overly grand by modern standards (I mean, I hope people would recognize it as tongue-in-cheek, but...): --- THIS _excellent_ Vector Graphics Application is recommended for the generation of Scalable Vector Graphics for use on the World Wide Web, for Print, Games, Desktop Icons, Cartography, and all other sundry purposes to which Scalable Vector Graphics are best suited. info on PSTricks extensions used is missing(LaTeX backend)

Hi! I'm new to Inkscape but would like to use it as a tool for illustrating my LaTeX (LyX) presentations prepared with a beamer package. I tried to 'draw' simple polygon in Inkscape (0.42) and save drawing as LaTeX with PSTricks macros. One confusion is that Inkscape produces .tex file and puts the following comment: %%Please note this file requires PSTricks extensions in the file, but i have problem discerning which extension(s) is/are required. I looked for a help on #inkscape and hinted to report the issue on the list and/or submit a bug report with the request that the info is placed in the file to help users. Static RPM isn't Very Static

I downloaded and installed the 0.42.2 RPM (I tried both i386 and i686) and even though it installed okay with no dependency errors, the program won't run because of the following error: [dallen@...1044... ~]$ inkscape inkscape: error while loading shared libraries: libgc.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I expect that a static build of an app to include everything needed to run that app, including necessary libraries, or is my understanding of "static" incorrect. I have had the same problem on both Fedora Core 3 (FC3) and FC4, both of which are updated as of the date of this post. I cannot find the library which contains the libgc.so.1 library file. Apparently it's not part of the Fedora distro. Where can I find this library? -- Best Regards, ~DJA.

png transparency displayed incorrectly

Since the image was to big, the email didn't get through... hence I now uploaded it to http://home.tu-clausthal.de/~dcb/linux/crayon.png (it's white with different opacity) Hey guys: I wanted to import the attached png to get the effect of crayons within inkscape... for some reason the transparency is displayed as being grey, at least partially.. any clues, why that might be? Same problem still exists on exporting to bmp... Thanx in advance! David

When using command line tool, I would expect it to take account of only what is on the command line or in referenced files. I think that bash and vim work like this, though they have non-trivial systems for setting user preferences and initial settings when used interactively. mingw up

Well... I've finally got fink to install mingw-gcc on my Mac. Next I have to get to actually setup and build the Win32 version, then I can help test. Just wondering if anyone else has done this before, or if anyone else is interested in it?

Crazy Xara Idea

Let's make two assumptions: 1) I have a Xara binary with built in Pantone support 2) That binary is not stripped. If I have the source code I should be able to figure out which function calls deal with that library, and I should be able to dynamically load the Xara binary and call those functions since I know the prototypes from the source code, and if I used the same tool chain. Could we get Pantone support? Users would have to buy the full version of Xara to get it, but for most people who need Pantone, that wouldn't be a big deal. Probably a better solution is to convince Xara to break their color management out into a GPL'd library. Then they could sell a proprietary version of that included Pantone support. Then we could link to that library. If it was generic enough, Scribus and GIMP might be interested also. Anyway, I've never thought about dynamically loading an application before. Crazy. --Ted

Win32 build trouble

Hello again, The build notes for Win32 (http://inkscape.org/win32/win32buildnotes.html) include the following step: * Get the latest Mingw distribution, here [http://www.mingw.org/]. It will be called something like mingw-x.x.x.exe. I could not find any such thing at the mingw.org site. They've broken their distribution down into dozens of little pieces, and I have no idea which I need. As an alternative, I decided to try using my existing cygwin installation. Unfortunately, cygwin seems to have a newer compiler with several subtle incompatibilities. After a few hours tracking down build problems, I give up. Does anyone have a working "mingw installation" they can zip up and send me? Or, at least some information on what it takes to get such a thing? corrupted inkscape 0.43 about.svg

share/screens/about.svg in CVS is corrupt: line 256 has `xml:space="preser,20.857566 -2664.3438,22.031250 C ' (and so on, evidently from a path's d attribute): see http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1310742&group_id=9… (True both of the initial upload (v1.20) and HEAD (v1.21).) Can everyone who's had something to do with this about screen search your hard drive and see if you have any copies that don't have the same corruption? Otherwise, where did we get this SVG file from? pjrm.
