bounding box bug

When I try selecting and moving the blue box in the attached example the bounding box seems to be displaced from the actual content. I've tested it using the version of inkscape that comes with ubuntu edgy and one I compiled today. Alex

List access? (anti-uce)

When we set inkscape-devel@ up, we set it to post-by-anyone to make it easy for people not subscribed to be able to send emails. However, in recent weeks we seem to be receiving an unusually high amount of spam. A few months ago the inkscape-user@ list was suffering the same situation, and reached a concensus to have list posting closed to non-members. This resulted in immediately preventing the spam emails. It also had the predicted downside of preventing some people from posting to the list, but so far this has been a fairly low level problem (most of the complaints were from people who didn't have much experience with mailing lists in general, and could be addressed with a little education). Like many on this list, I've always been in the camp of keeping list posting open to non-members, however, given inkscape-user's success, it might be worth considering. What do others think? Bryce

[sorry Jon Phillips....this time to the list...] And what about uploading artwork directly from inkscape to open-clipart ? This would certainly push me to contribute ! Imagine : I have made some cool shapes (an animal for instance) as part of a poster I'm doing with inkscape. I just select these shapes and select "export to open-clipart", and it is included in the library... Wow, lots of responses! I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed about now. I've never done any major coding before, just school projects, and a bit of goofing of on my own. I apologize if my responses or ideas of what needs to be done seem naive -- I'm trying to learn as I go here. I'd like to make something usefull, but if I try to bite off something too big, I'll never get it done. Assuming it's usable, and I could just update it and the extension, would it be possible to have the "Import Clipart" menu item below the current "Import" menu item? Import Clipart function

I think it'd be great if it were possible to select "Import clipart" in the Inkscape menu, and there was a nice clipart browser that would pop up to let you view the clipart by category, see thumbnails, and select a piece of clipart to import into your drawing. As I'm thinking about this, I'm thinking specificly of OCAL. What do people think? I'd like to implement this, but I wanted to get some input first. I'm not new to programming, but I haven't done much with GUIs, and nothing with GTK. Here's what I was thinking... The GUI would have a two panes, a Cancel and an OK button. The left pane would be an expandable tree view of the OCAL categories. You could expand a category to view the sub categories. The right pane would display thumbnails of the clipart in the selected category (and it's sub categories?). The user would select a thumbnail, then click "OK" to insert it. Since rendering all of the SVG cliparts in each category would take too long, I would use the png thumbnails already in OCAL. So as not to be reading through all the OCAL collection each time you want to import, the categories and thumbnails listings would be read from an XML file. I would write a script or plugin to generate the appropriate XML file, and if this works out nicely, maybe OCAL would be able to include the XML file in the download. This next part should be read with the disclaimer that this is how it would work if I'm understanding the Inkscape source correctly... I would create a new verb SP_VERB_FILE_IMPORT_CLIPART, and a new menu item "Import Clipart". When it was chosen, it would call sp_clipart_file_import instead of sp_file_import like the current Import does. The sp_clipart_file_import would open the dialog I described above, and call file_import like the current Import method does. Essentially it would do the exact same job that Import does now, but with a GUI that is friendly for browsing clipart. Artists needed!

With all the recent additions - clipping, masking, and especially blur - Inkscape is finally able to produce some real photorealistic art. This is a call to arms for all Inkscape artists to start working on some stunning examples of what's now possible in Inkscape. We will need them - the more the better - for screenshots, examples, tutorials, etc. etc. One thing I would like to request in particular: A car. It would be very nice to have a complex, detailed, photorealistic SVG image of a shiny impressive car. There are several reasons for why this is desirable. First, cars are sexy (for many people, anyway). Second, they are relatively easy to draw by tracing a photo - you don't need to be much of an artist for that, you just need patience, Inkscape skills, and a good photo to start from. Third, with their glass and brass and polish, well-lit cars are ideal for showcasing "photorealism". And finally, our main competitor at this time, Xara LX, has long used amazingly photorealistic images of cars (among other things) for its promotion, and it worked well. We need such an image if only to give people an idea of how we compare with Xara. NEW: blur quality/speed settings

The quality of on-screen blur display is controlled by the Blur quality option on the new Filters tab of Inkscape Preferences (Ctrl+Shift+P). The available options range from best quality/slowest display to worst quality/fastest display, the default being in the middle between the two. Any setting except the "best quality" may introduce some rendering artefacts, especially when blurring thin strokes; on the other hand, the "best quality" setting may make Inkscape extremely slow at high zooms.
