Fedora Core 3 is no more, Weeee!

Hello all, Thanks for the patience on the FC3 threads. Ya'll convinced me to shifty over to a new distro and I went to Kubuntu 6.06 yesterday. Have had some hell with merging home folders, but nothing too deadly. Imagine my horror to find that the latest inkscape in the apt repos is 0.43-something! The same one I had on FC3 :Mad spinny eye smiley here: So, I understood that ubuntu was kinda the dev distro (Windows aside) of choice, surely there must be debs of 0.44 by now? How do debs normally get to ubuntu repos? Is it a committee kinda thing, with a central scrutinizer or can you quickly update a package if you make a new deb? So, what's the best way for me to get ink 0.44 (official release vers) up and running on *ubuntu 6.06 ? Cos i'm really tired of Windows edging Linux out on it's own software! Best, Donn.

I think it's time we did a prerelease of 0.44.1; this will give us an opportunity to shake out any new issues, and give the translators an opportunity to get their work in before 0.44.1 final. I've updated the release notes on the wiki and bumped the version numbers in the 0.44 branch, but we still need to do the rest of the dist process and tag it all. Someone also needs to document on CreatingDists the process of getting the release notes into the NEWS file as well. Volunteers? -mental

Hi, Just another reminder to all committers: please don't forget to update release notes for all notable changes (whether it's new UI, new features, or just notable code changes). In particular we need entries for: - new PS/PDF fixes and capabilities by Ulf - the rendering quality/speed patch by Jasper - all work done so far on filters by Niko and Hugo I may have forgotten or missed something. Since the speed update, I've been able to work a lot faster at node editing than before (yay!), and I've found a few spots in the node/path handling code where NULL pointers are being dereferenced. I just committed a small change that increases the number of checks in those areas and fails with g_return_if_fail() if the pointers are NULL. Take care, John

Hi, FYI, there are LGPL tools to convert ArcView Shapefiles, used as common GIS exchange file format, to SVG: http://www.carto.net/papers/svg/utils/shp2svg/ And, btw, do we really want to forget cdr2svg.py script by Richard Hughes from September 2005? Alexandre

Joining the Software Freedom Conservancy

Hi all, Inkscape's been growing by leaps and bounds this last year, thanks to all the efforts of its community. Part of the growth process requires formalizing certain things - such as how we handle Inkscape's finances. Up to now, I've handled Inkscape's finances as part of my own. However, with the income we'll be getting from Google, and the increasing amount of donations we've been receiving, now is a good time to set Inkscape up with a more formal way to manage its money. The Inkscape admins have considered a number of options. The one we like best is to join the Software Freedom Conservancy (http://conservancy.softwarefreedom.org/). For the past few months I've been working with the SFC, and just recently learned we've been accepted! Here's more info: http://inkscape.org/conservancy/ However, before this becomes official, there are three things I think we need to do: First is to give the community the opportunity to voice any questions or concerns before anything gets set. Second, we need to review the agreement that the SFC requires us to sign. Third, we need to select a set of official representatives who will sign the Agreement papers that cause Inkscape to become part of the SFC. As part of this, we need to decide how official (monetary) decisions will be made by Inkscape. This is required by the SFC mainly so there is a defined way for determining how funds will be spent. Do we require a full concensus of the Inkscape representatives? A simple majority? Or is the word of any one representatives enough? My own feeling is that a simple majority (3 out of 4 reps) is enough. We also will need to have a defined procedure for adding/removing representatives. Please review http://inkscape.org/conservancy/ and give some thought as to how we should organize Inkscape, and share your thoughts in this thread. Thanks, Bryce

NEW: interruptible display for better interactivity

Just committed: * Interruptible display: Previously, Inkscape could not do anything until it finishes the current screen redraw. Now the redraw is made interruptible, so that Inkscape responds to mouse and keyboard input and can abort the current redraw and start over if you do some screen-changing operation. As a result, Inkscape now feels much snappier and more interactive. So, while redraw is not really any faster now, it _feels_ much faster, especially for things like zooming, scrolling, etc. Enjoy. I fixed a couple bugs that were exposed by this change, but there may be more. In particular I suspect there might be a crash when you quit Inkscape while it's redrawing. I got this crash a couple times but it's very hard to nail it down. If you can cause it reproducibly please let me know. Other than that, it's working perfectly for me in the last few days.
