That's right, I committed some more patches earlier this week (which sf.net's mailing list seemingly did didn't deliver). There are now the options for adobe-illustrator-cs.xml and macromedia-freehand-mx.xml in the inkscape share/keys/ folder. It would be really great to have UI in our preferences to select a different keyboard shortcuts preference. This would be a nice low hanging fruit task. Has anyone started this? If no one has started this, there are a few of steps: 1.) create a preference for which keys xml file to use 2.) create ui for selecting the keys in our Inkscape Preferences... dialog 3.) add necessary code to get keyboard shortcuts selection to work 4.) EXTRA CREDIT: for you UI to be able to create, edit and duplicate current configs so that they may be user created... Also, along these lines would be to create some simple UI for setting a default language for Inkscape from the languages we have translated. While ppl. may set this from the commandline, this would help our translators and basic users. Basically, you would take the same approach as step 1-3 above...for languages, we would have to make the change active on restart...however, for keys, I'm not sure if we could make them reset during an active Inkscape process. Does anyone know if this is possible? It would actually be great to do both while Inkscape is running... Decoupling rendering

Here is a simple Observer-style separation of document traversal and output-specific rendering. If people don't disagree with this too much, I can spend more than 5 minutes on it and flesh this out further. If this seems reasonable, the first Context would naturally seem to be wrapped around Cairo. Contributing some CAD tools to Inkscape.

I've been using Inkscape for a couple of years now. I had inquired about adding some object snaps to Inkscape when I first started using the program, but I didn't know any C++ at the time, and didn't want to tackle the language. That has changed, since I'm now using a Linux box at home and work, in addition to my MS Windows boxes. I've been learning some C programming, and even bought a 900 page book on C++ programming. :] I volunteer as one of the project admins for an open source GIS/Mapping program. I was planning on creating a map drafting and printing extension for the program from scratch. However, someone wrote a plug-in for our program that allows us to export the data in SVG, and one of the users began producing cartographic quality maps in Inkscape! That really got my wheels turning. I am considering the possibility as using Inkscpape and perhaps Scribus as the main cartographic map production tools for our program. If this works out, I'd like to begin contributing to Inkscape as a developer. My primary areas of interest are object snapping and precision drafting/drawing tools. I'd also be interested in some advanced labeling tools, DXF import/export, layer management, and sheet layout for printing/plotting. I saw Matthew Squires was working on DXF support for Inkscape as part of Google's Summer of Code, but I didn't see any files on his SourceForge site yet. Is that project still ongoing? Is anyone else working on the areas I mentioned? (I took a look at the roadmap on the Inkscape site, but didn't see any of these things mentioned.) If you would be willing to put up with my questions, I'd be willing to help implement some of these features. :] I must warn you ahead of time, I do have a good knowledge of programming and XML, and even own a couple of textbooks on SVG, but I am a C++ rookie. I'm going to read over the Inkscape Developer's Manual posted on the wiki tonight. I'd look forward to some advice on how to get started. I think I'd like to start with the object snaps tools first. At any rate, I look forward to hearing from you guys about this, and hope I'll have the chance to improve a great open source tool I've been using for a long time. Scott Huey

0.44.1 release

Could someone please finish up the 0.44.1 release for me? It doesn't look like I'll have time to finish it anytime soon. At this point it's mostly done, though, I just need someone to: - work with the folks on inkscape-translator to get any remaining translation stuff in - do an 0.44.1pre2 release - make a final 0.44.1 release if there aren't any issues with 0.44.1pre2 -mental

The bindings are based on a concept (not the layout) from the animation software Toon Boom Studio. The idea is that the left hand never leaves the keyboard and the right hand never leaves the stylus. From my own experience, it's quite a lot faster to draw this way. :) I just committed the bindings for this, so feel free to try it out if you're into doing drawing or illustration work with a tablet. Save and Save As, Save a Copy vs Export

There are several bug reports and feature requests that show how people find the current Save and Save As combination to be cumbersome to work with, but.. reading feature requests such as #1520237, #1085718, #1282332, #1377887, #1388131 and #1511930 it is clear that there are as many ideas as reporters on what the best solution is. and often is this idea very much influenced by what other applications the reporter has used before What are the plans (or thoughts and ideas) about how Inkscape should work regarding saving and exporting files in the future? Is there an Inkscape GUI guru (group?) deciding on what the best strategy is? Is there a document describing such a common goal everyone can help work towards? There seems to be two works in progress in Svn; a new export dialog that also includes vector formats and a new save a copy dialog. My personal preference goes for extending an existing dialog, but wish to hear whether this is all part of a bigger plan.

My memory of 'static' was vague, I was thinking of variables, but then checked and found that in front of a function definition it makes it visible in the current file only. So, I removed the 'static' prefix and moved the definition to 'modules.h' and it compiled. ...but, why was it static anyway? Have I broken something by remving the 'static'? GBoolean -> Bool commit 1 (12971)

In light of our previous attempt at the task of converting as many gbooleans to bools as possible (resulted in inkscape crashing in various circumstances), we've decided to go for a more incremental approach. I'll change a few and commit, and wait a few days for possible bugs to appear. This time around I'm also taking it much more slowly, carefully. I don't expect to have as many problems as we had before. This commit only converts 33 gbooleans to bools (also changes lots of TRUE and FALSE to true and false). This isn't too many though, and I've looked at each rather carefully, so it should be fine. However, it would still be good to have some testing done to be sure. Here are the sections which are modified, possibly inducing bugs: Undo-System: If the modifications screwed up, then this would pick up on actions that are supposed to be ignored, making the next hit of "Undo" likely do nothing, or crash, or undo something its not supposed to. To see these specific places do a search on all the code for sp_document_set_undo_sensitive. SVG/XML: Screwing this up should be pretty obvious. Hopefully. Just remember this if something goes wrong in the next few days.
