The brazilian inkscape community is very active. But lots of people are not familiar with english. So there seems to be a need for a community effort to proxy their bug reports and feature requests into our official bugtracker (by translating them into english). I am not sure whether launchpad has a feature to enable that. But I would like to install a launchpad server to host bug reports in portuguese and I'd like to know whether there is some feature that would help us keep some kind of relation between equivalent bugs in both systems so that we can minimize the human effort to keep both systems fairly synchronized. I'd like to have bug status, tags, metadata, etc.. all shared and synchronized so that the only human effort would be the actual translation of user comments. But if we dont have such features, I still would like to try to setup the best system we can in order to allow greater user participation. Felipe "Juca" Sanches

Accessing Inkscape document data as it is generated

Hello all, Haven't posted a message here in a long time -- hope things are going well! I've received a message asking about the best way to access Inkscape's document data as it's changed. His project involves serving document data from Inkscape to locally-running programs, for which he plans to use DBus. The questioner prefers to remain anonymous for now. My initial response recommended implementing Inkscape::UndoStackObserver, much as Inkboard did, as it's an easy way to obtain a stream of transactions on the document. However, questioner's concern with this approach was that listening for changes on the undo stack wouldn't capture intermediate states of actions, e.g. motion along a path. He brought up another possibility, which was to send changes in batches at short intervals (using, say, Inkscape::XML::NodeObserver). I'm no longer familiar enough with the Inkscape codebase to give an opinion on how well this would work, nor do I know if there's been any changes in the past few years that would make this sort of thing easier. Can anyone help out? I can offer clarifications as necessary. Thanks, - David

May I ask why EPS? Even the position of its creator is to move forward to PDF. I usually find myself trying to import/export proprietary formats but if I send the "wrong" format to my providers they ask me to export it again in their preferred format. I wonder why we have to worry about this and not them, since we can do PDF or even SVG (which doesn't seem to be very well supported by some commercial and people can't complain, by the way). I know saying this won't solve anything and it's not very helpful, just my two cents.

.po problem when compiling on Win 32

When I try to compile the source files on a Win32 platform, I get a raft of errors saying that 'keyword msgctxt not found' in file am.po. Each file I delete leads the error onto the next po file until I delete all the po files, the compilation then works properly. This is not a great issue for me as I don't need the translations but it is bound to be a problem for some others. Private strings: use of const

A few months ago we had a thread about static code analysis with coverity. However, I have not heard anything from it anymore. So I just installed myself another static code analysis software packet, cppcheck. I played with it a bit and stumbled upon several notifications of functions that could be const. See e.g. the extract of the log: [E:\Inkscapecode\inkscape\src\extension\extension.h:122]: (style) The function 'Extension::get_help' can be const [E:\Inkscapecode\inkscape\src\extension\param/parameter.h:111]: (style) The function 'Parameter::name' can be const [E:\Inkscapecode\inkscape\src\extension\param/parameter.h:116]: (style) The function 'Parameter::get_tooltip' can be const [E:\Inkscapecode\inkscape\src\extension\param/parameter.h:119]: (style) The function 'Parameter::get_gui_hidden' can be const [E:\Inkscapecode\inkscape\src\extension\dbus\dbus-init.cpp:87]: (style) Unused variable: obj [E:\Inkscapecode\inkscape\src\extension\dbus\dbus-init.cpp:104]: (style) Variable 'error' is assigned a value that is never used So the first item lists line 112 of extension.h: gchar const * get_help (void) { return _help; } which should return the pointer to a string in a private variable. However what should be const? The pointer, the string to which the pointer points to or both? Aparently the pointer should be const, no? (e.g. to ensure that the string can not be deleted in some buggy code that calls get_help, leaving the pointer_help in the class pointing to some odd data chunk?) This would result in: gchar * const get_help (void) { return _help; } Or is there something that I am missing? BTW: this is just an example, the same reasoning is valid for the listings in parameter.h Regards Kris

My wife has a Genius Pensketch tablet that uses the wizardpen driver in gnu/linux. The driver is provided by the community and have some limitations, like being unable to work with a mouse at the same time (if you use the tablet you lose the ability to use mouse on the work area until you change the stylius from screen to de-activated). If that selector is removed it will render inkscape unusable for people with those tablets who want to use the mouse as well. And there are lots of cheap tablets that only run in linux with that driver. Wacom tablets (and those that use the wacom drivers) don't have that problem and you can safely leave everything set to screen.

rss generation

Hi, While we are waiting for Development Seed guys to start working on the new website, it'd be nice to fix some things on the existing one. One thing that IMO needs fixing is the RSS feed generator. Currently it just compiles all the text it can find into one paragraph, which isn't nice, and loses all HTML links, which is even worse. Could anybody with PHP-Fu please fix that?
