During last LGM we have discussed on future development of Inkscape. Among the tasks, we pointed the print-ready PDF request. I mentionned we have 2 opportunities : - as scribus does a print-ready PDF, try to learn from that to develop our own. Discussions with Franz and Andreas have pointed it was not hard in the principle but that cairo might not do it so soon and that Scribus don't provide a library whoch could easily implement it into Inkscape. Andreas has shown interest in helping in a way, and Kryzstof seem to be on the way - i also said that actually we usually import Inkscape documents into Scribus and make the PDF from it. Of course, this is far from being a perfect workflow for it needs few minutes to be done and redone when needed just for an "export". Plus we have issues with Scribus SVG import features which sometimes means come back to a standard PNG export, which is not desired when we decide to use vector. I gave the filter example and this one is really not it the Roadmap because there are many other more important feature to get implement before and that filters are not in PDF so they might be rasterized anyway. Scribus don't provide a command line option that would allow PDF generation on the fly from Inkscape. The situation is improving because Scribus is itself getting getter in SVG support but there are no real plans so that we have no idea when it could be done and the guy working mainly on Postscript and SVG may not be available in the next months. I think that create a better Workflow with Scribus is interesting for many other reasons that get Print-ready PDF for Inkscape. Especially, we'd anyway need to import often vector drawing in Scribus for complex layout. Actually Inkscape is missing many interesting things such as text styles, flowing text around objects, multipage... So we should not imagine Inkscape could replace Scribus as easily. May be that one of the easiest would be exploring by ourselves especially give Scribus files that it can easily read : i guess it's will be easier to get an exporter than an importer - Provide a "Scribus SVG" which contains bitmap data or links so that we could flatten or rasterize everything scribus won't support, choosing the resolution. I didn't check if this could be done in python, especially accessing primitive filters - Provide an exchange format that could help and i'm thinking of OpenRaster. Scribus just begun implemented it in March and i've done some test on it. There is actually no vector support, but this format might be a could beginning point to work with many other softwares too like Krita or Mypaint. I think it would worth to put the effort on ora more that on XCF esport, for example. I can help on this as i can, but i'm not a programmer so i'm slow in coding. I more used in python but i've really done little patch in C++ though never for Inkscape. CU pygmee

Chill. √ Development focuses on wrapping up √ Disable features that aren't finished √ Identify 'make distcheck' issues √ Identify any critical OSX/Win32 packaging issues √ Identify remaining writing needed for Release Notes. √ Regressions Bug Hunt: 500 points -----> Update tutorials and other docs The last item in the chill list is updating the tutorials that are shipped with the Inkscape package, including anything under the Help menu. The reason this task needs done in the Chill phase is to give translators plenty of time during Frost and Freeze. External tutorials are also worth updating of course but aren't schedule-critical so not tracked here. Ryan, your name was mentioned as someone with an eye on the tutorials, would you mind summarizing what work is already in process relating to tutorials for the Inkscape package? Bryce

Website Request: LPE News

Hi Devs, I've noticed there's quite a few LPE features going in, and it would be nice if we had a news article in the next few weeks that detailed them, their experimental or not status and any extra information. I'll do it as a fallback, but an LPE dev would be best to do a write-up. (send me any details if you think I should) I know there's been power stroke changes, there's the ponyscape LPEs on the horizon as well as Jabiertxof's Simplify and Perspective Envelope additions which are very useful. Filleting in SVG Spec.

Joining non-end nodes in Inkscape (both through GUI and LPE)

Hello, I am looking for a way to join two (potentially non-end) nodes from different paths into one, so when I move the node both paths are modified accordingly. I read the manual and I realize that the “Join” feature on Inkscape GUI will only join two end nodes. Is it possible to join two non-end nodes on GUI (to make an “X” with joined intersection node, for example?) More importantly, I would also like to do this in code, through LPE. For example, if I use Construct Grid LPE, it would be really nice if the output paths join all the intersection together, like what I demonstrate on the right of the following image: I also noticed that there was a similar idea being proposed a few years back and to my best knowledge I don’t think this feature exists yet. Put it simply, I’d like to know if there is a way to output paths from LPE so that some non-end nodes across different curves are joined. Thank you for your answers. Internal Coordinate System in Inkscape

Hi, I’m writing here for the first time so nice to meet you all! I started playing with Inkscape since a few weeks ago and one thing I haven’t really understood is the way coordinate system works on Inkscape. First of all, in the UI, the origin lies at the bottom-left corner of the canvas, with y-axis pointing upward (based on what Inkscape displayed when I moved my mouse around the canvas). However, when I created a path through an LPE and printed anchor positions as the path was moved around, I found that the internal coordinate system had y-axis pointing downward, with the origin (0,0) lying somewhere above the canvas instead. Is this an expected behavior? Is there a transformation matrix that transforms the internal positions to the canvas positions? I compiled Inkscape 0.48 from trunk on OS X Mavericks using clang 3.4 with required libraries compiled using libc++. If anyone knows about this I’d really appreciate your answer here. Instability in Lib2geom's D2<SBasis> construction

Hi, I have noticed a few parts in lib2geom that give unstable output. I am trying to figure out what causes this and possible how to fix it: In lib2geom’s toy example curvature-test.cpp, we fit osculating circle at a point of a given curve. We can slide along time parameter to fit osculating circle at different point on the curve. I modify the code a little to output the curvature plot of the curve in two ways: 1) Using D2<SBasis> to build curvature graph. Each segment in D2<SBasis> is a copy of SBasis from curvature curve K, offset by a constant. (as seen in RED). Piecewise<SBasis> K = curvature(B); 2) Draw the graph directly by cairo_move_to(), cairo_line_to(). (as seen in GREEN). The normal result would look like this: However, when I hover my mouse around randomly (no input has been changed), the curve being fitted using D2<SBasis> will go wild randomly too: Notice that the green curve that plots curvature with cairo methods is stable. Does anyone know if we have a fix for this? Here is the source file: The part that seems to give problems is when we define D2<> segment with linear interpolation: for(unsigned ix = 0; ix < K.segs.size(); ix++) { D2<SBasis> Kxy; Kxy[1] = Linear(450) - K.segs[ix]*400; Kxy[0] = Linear(300*K.cuts[ix] + 150, 300*K.cuts[ix+1] + 150); cairo_d2_sb(cr, Kxy); cairo_set_source_rgba (cr, 1., 0., 0., 0.8); cairo_stroke(cr); } I did something similar to this in other toy example and got the same instability. I believe that the instability comes from using K.segs[] to define new SBasis (K is a Piecewise<SBasis> that contains curvature of the curve). If I create D2<SBasis> by purely linear segments, my output is very stable: dd = 0.1; for (double tt = 0; tt < 1.0; tt += dd) { D2<SBasis> Kxy; Kxy[1] = SBasis(450 - K(tt)*400, 450 - K(tt+dd)*400); Kxy[0] = SBasis(150 + 300*(tt), 150 + 300*(tt+dd)); cairo_d2_sb(cr, Kxy); cairo_set_source_rgba (cr, 1., 0., 0., 0.8); cairo_stroke(cr); } Would appreciate some helps to fix the issue here. Invalid state when picking: STATE_BBOX

Hi all, Krzysz, How serious is this warning: Invalid state when picking: STATE_BBOX = %d, STATE_PICK = %d Simply drawing a rectangle already makes this one pop up. If it is serious, could you have a look into fixing it Krzysz? If it's not so serious, please disable printing of the warning. Thanks, Johan
