performance problems and possible remedies?

Hi. I'm using Inkscape to author a comic and the slow speed for certain things is very annoying. I'm already have OpenMP turned on and using 4 cores. 1. *large blurs are slow* - I'm an expert with writing SIMD code, so I was thinking about vectorizing the Gaussian IIR filter with SIMD intrinsics, even though it's harder than for a FIR. But I noticed there isn't any SIMD code in Inkscape so does that mean it's something to avoid. My first instinct was to optimize those 2 functions, but then I thought why are those even being called every time I scroll through the image? Why not convert the images up front to linear and stay that way in memory? If that can't be done, then my optimization approach is: 1. replace ink_cairo_surface_srgb_to_linear() with a simple 3rd degree polynomial approximation (0.902590573087882 - 0.010238759806148x + 0.002825455367280x^2 + 0.000004414767235x^3) and vectorize with SSE intrinsics. The approximation was calculated by minimizing the square error (maxError = 0.313) over the range [10, 255]. For x < 10, it uses simple scaling. 2. replace ink_surface_linear_to_srgb() with a vectorized implementation of pow(). Unlike srgb_to_linear(), a low degree polynomial can't be used due to the curve having larger high order derivatives. An alternative would be piece wise, low order polynomials. The main question I have is what degree of accuracy is desired? Certainly, it doesn't need double precision pow() since the input is only 8 bits! Is +- 0.5 from the true value (before quantization) OK or do people depend on getting pixel perfect results? UJ

Create releases more regularly

Hi there, I initially asked at inkscapeforum.com<http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=15755&p=63224>and was told to better post my request to this mailing list. I wonder if it wouldn't be possible to create releases more regularly. Currently there are many months or even years between each release of Inkscape. Bug fixes should get out more quickly and it should be possible to try out new features of upcoming versions. Most users don't have the possibility to build Inkscape by their own, so they have to wait for the next release. Unfortunately the provided development downloads are not synchronized, hosted on different third-party web sites and out of date (currently especially the Windows version). So I suggest to create a (more or less) fixed fast release cycle for normal releases (e.g. every two or three months) and periodically (e.g. every one or two weeks) create alpha versions. Alpha versions should be built (maybe even automatically) for all supported OSes and hosted directly on inkscape.org. Sebastian

Impressions on Inkscape after extended usage

Hello, In the past several months - closer to a year, actually - I've used Inkscape in a tight production environment almost daily. I have produced hundreds of illustrations for a computer-based technical course. During that period I used Inkscape 0.48.5 and lately switched to test builds and release candidates of 0.91. All of this time I have kept a list of the problems I ran into using Inkscape. Some are plain bugs, some are more complex problems for which I have no idea for a solution. After testing the new version to see whether some of these problems have gone away, I thought I might share this document with you. Before I go on, I just like to say that these are mostly minor points. I am an avid user and promoter of Inkscape even though my workplace has provided me with a legal copy of Adobe Illustrator, which I think is inferior in ease of use. I think Inkscape on the whole is a brilliant piece of software and I'm thankful for all your efforts. But some problem just kept popping up again and again. Jenkins administration

Hi all, Jenkins, our CI system, has been down for more than a month. It looks like the disk has filled up, and we need to do clean up / the build tasks should clean up after themselves better (I suspect it has to do with storing the results of too many older builds instead of just the current one plus a few recent builds). We need an administrator for Jenkins. Currently, I think only me and Bryce have access, which is not good enough. Who is interested in maintaining the automatic build/testing system? I develop on macs though, and I can’t seem to find any up-to-date instructions on building for mac. Can anyone point me to some current info? 2Gom sync - high potential for regressions after r14226

Hello I recently made a commit that finally synchronizes the 2Geom version used in Inkscape and the "upstream" version in 2Geom's Launchpad repository. It compiles and appears to work correctly, but since there were several potentially breaking changes in 2Geom, it has a high potential for regressions. The most important changes in 2Geom are: 1. The sign convention for cross(Point, Point) was flipped to match the one for cross(D2<SBasis>, D2<SBasis>): it is a[X]*b[Y] - a[Y]*b[X], not the other way around. I think I converted all uses, but one can never know. 2. All nearestPoint() methods were renamed to nearestTime(), since they return time (parameter) values, not points. nearestTime() for Path and PathVector returns PathTime and PathVectorTime respectively. PathTime encapsulates a curve index and a time value, while PathVectorTime encapsulated a path index, a curve index and a time value. The reason for using these types instead of extending the range of the time parameter from [0, 1] to [0, N] is twofold: - Packing these two parameters into the double type causes a loss of acuracy as the indices increase. For example, referencing a point that lies on the 32nd curve causes a loss of at least 5 bits of precision. - For PathVector, there is an unnecessary O(N) step involved in mapping the [0, N] time value to path and curve indices. In the future, there will be two additional families of methods: nearestPoint(), which will actually return the nearest point (I avoided adding until the sync is done to simplify porting to the new API), and nearestPosition(), which will compute both the nearest point and the time value. Doing the latter can often save a lot of calculations, since in many cases the point is computed from the time or vice versa. 3. SVGEllipticalArc was renamed to EllipticalArc, and the old EllipticalArc was removed. The only difference between them was that EllipticalArc would throw exceptions if the constructor parameters did not specify a valid arc, whereas SVGEllipticalArc just falls back to a straight line. Additionally, a number of other improvements were made, for example EllipticalArc no longer allocates a copy of itself when transforming it. 4. There was a major cleanup of Path: - Iterating between begin() and end_closed() will skip the linear closing segment if and only if its endpoints coincide exactly. SVGPathParser was modified to retain the old behavior of considering the closing segment degenerate if it is shorter than some specified tolerance. - Internally, the path is now stored as a copy-on-write boost::ptr_vector of Curve. This should give a performance boost, since we are no longer using boost::shared_ptr-based copy-on-write for each curve, but only for entire Paths. - PathVector is now a real class, not a typedef of PathVector, This allows several things to be implemented as methods instead of as standalone functions. - PathSink was improved. Instead of creating a switch-like structure for the result of dynamic_cast of the abstract curve type to more concrete types, please derive from PathSink. - There is a new class called CairoPathSink for outputting 2Geom paths and shapes to Cairo. 5. Circle and Ellipse were fleshed out, and contain many of the methods found in Curve and Path. 6. There is a new intersection API, exposed as a method on shapes and returning a class that contains two time values and the point of intersection. There are methods for Line, Circle, Ellipse, Path and PathVector. Please test and report and regressions, but please make sure to check whether they are really regressions - for example the eraser tool sometimes doesn't work and it has nothing to do with the 2Geom sync, but rather with some faulty code in livarot. Dear developers, I was reviewing inkscape on deviantArt and I noticed a theme: www.deviantart.com/browse/all/journals/?order=5&q=inkscape Apart from the odd "I hate Inkscape" etc, there's a big need for tutorials and most are interested in video tutorials. This is probably something we should put together for the website. Something coherent for users. But I'm not exactly sure of the structure we should use. A competition? Scouting for talent? XQuartz status

Hi, Like many other people using Inkscape on a Mac, I’ve had lots of problems with multi-monitor support through different versions of XQuartz and OS X. It’s still basically unusable if you have the “Displays have separate spaces” option enabled. I’ve commented on some of the XQuartz bugs, and raised issues with Apple in the hope that someday something might get fixed. The other day I received an update on one of the XQuartz bugs (included below). Is anyone else worried that a fundamental piece of the architecture for making Inkscape work on a Mac is pretty much unsupported now? I’m guessing that if there’s no one working on it things are just going to get worse as new versions of OS X roll out? A beginner walk-through of Inkscape's user interface 3. A teaser/commercial with screencaptures of some of our talented community of artists working on professional projects with Inkscape. 4. Migration from Adobe Illustrator to Inkscape for graphics professionals 5. A short series of how-to videos demonstrating how to make some common graphics tasks like: -How to make elements like vines/flourishes -How to use Inkscape for package design -How to use Inkscape for labels, barcodes, and templates -How to use Inkscape for product design -Using Inkscape to make video caption templates -Favourites, or most-asked-for tutorials on the forums. -etc. 6. Tips and tricks to do things quickly in Inkscape. Some of these things aren't obvious, but highlighting features and how to use them to supercharge your graphics workflow is key especially for production artists. I can do pretty much all of these, with the added bonus of using Blender 3D as my Open Source video production software of choice. My only real limitation is time, but I'm happy to provide my graphics and materials to the team so others can help by filling in the gaps when they get time. RFC: stroke-alignment property for SVG and Inkscape

Hi. I'm Juan Luis Boya. As a Semester of Code project (http://semesterofcode.com/) I've have been for some time trying to add alternative stroke alignment options to Inkscape. There is an in-progress W3C draft for SVG2 that attempts to introduce a property named `stroke-alignment` for this purpose. This is an attempt to create an implementation of it. http://www.w3.org/TR/svg-strokes/ This property would control the placement of path strokes. This is better explained with an example. See this image: http://i.imgur.com/GIqKrwj.png The image shows the same rectangle with four different stroking modes. The black line represents the shape path, as that you would see with the 'Edit paths by nodes' tool in Inkscape. Shown in orange is the stroke of the path as would be seen by the user. A issue with the previous proposal was there was no definition for open paths. I propose to amend this in two ways: a) Adding two new values: `left` and `right`. `left` would place the stroke at the left of each path segment. The direction of the path is determined by the order of the nodes, in the same manner arrow lines work. The following image shows an example of how this would work: http://i.imgur.com/otULloP.png b) `inset` and `outset` would work as if the shapes were closed with a straight line, except that line would not be rendered. The property would be set as an style property (in CSS code). Add a few toggle buttons would be added to the Inkscape UI in the Stroke Style tab in order to control the value of the property. As for the implementation: 1. The offsetting would be done only to the stroke line, which will still be rendered as an stroked line (instead of being converted to a polygon). 2. The property would be added to NRStyle and SPStyle classes. 3. Add buttons to the Stroke Style UI. 4. As far as I know, paths are rendered in DrawingShape::_renderItem(). This method reads style properties from a class member named _nrstyle. (Therefore we need to add properties to both NRStyle and SPStyle). Now, this method would read the property and stroke appropriately. At the time of writing Cairo does not have support for a style property like this, so we will do the offsetting in Inkscape. a) If the value is center, the same path would be used for both stroke and fill. b) In other case, first fill will be applied using the original path, then the offsetted path would be calculated and stroked. For the stroke-alignment values 'right' and 'left' applying the offset is as simple as offsetting by stroke-width/2, positive or negative respectively. 'inset' and 'outset' are a bit more problematic, especially for self-intersecting shapes. I have been able to add the required SVG property to Inkscape. I'll commit it soon. The controls in the UI will be hidden under a compile time flag. * I've written code to outline the stroke, but also... * I've found several important bugs in half_outline() that cause it to fail even for simple shapes. Thanks for the words of encouragement. :) There should probably be some simple, brief subtitling going on to describe what's happening, since it's not always clear. For example, when using alt-scrollwheel to select objects down the object tree, the screen looks like it's going nuts, changing the opacity of things quickly, and nothing is pressed except the alt-hotkey. I made a key-board hotkey font using inkscape a while back, and will include it in the materials. It makes hotkey charts like this one very easy to do: http://opendesignstudio.org/gimp/quickref/video_hotkeys_gimp_paths_tool_scr… It would allow the making of a template for hotkey captions much easier without any need to copy/paste from large svg file full of hotkeys. :) I can leave a bit of extra space under the english subtitle to add translations. Video Tutorials

Hello All, How feasible would it be to make these video's play in a SVG framework that uses SVG text for subtitles? Translating those subtitle files would be really straightforward. Unfortunately, using SMIL is not really an option for the timing as that isn't supported by MS, so we'd have to create some js framework for that or maybe Fake smile if that would do the trick. Doing it in js would still be fairly simple by taking the text and start and end times from a txt file, but doing more complicated stuff would be more work in js. I am not sure if you can overlay SVG content on top of video content as that would be really neat, but it would be quite nice if it would be used as an SVG showcase as well. I've seen demo's with animated video content, so my gut feeling says it should be possible. Using that we could use the Icon symbols as well being displayed when something is being selected, follow the mouse pointer in a zoomed area with <use> in a clip and other sexy stuff, to create some really state of the art tutorials. The problem would probably be hosting this kind of stuff. There are about 400 Million web users here in China that cannot have a peek at Youtube without VPN and I am not sure if Inkscape.org would be up to hosting it if just 0.001% of those would take a peek at a lazy day, just after lunch. I wonder though if there is some outfit around that would be interested in hosting this kind of thing as sponsors. Apart from that, making such a showcase would also be useful for people interested in authoring SVG itself and for showing the advantage of using Inkscape for that. I could make a proof of concept for that, but considering the amount of time involved, I'd first like to know what your thoughts are on this idea. Cheers, Jelle Mulder

Hackfest C++11 migration discussion

Summary: We are considering adopting new cleaner & more flexible C++ language features. This may not work with some older compiler versions. Opinions are warmly welcomed! ----- Hi All, At the Hackfest, we discussed adopting features from the C++11 standard into our code. The advantages are (among others) significantly cleaner, more flexible and more readable syntax. I've included three examples at the end of this message. Our discussion included consideration of users of older compilers. A convenient summary of compiler support is available at [1]. Several features (illustrated in the examples below) are well supported, including range-based for loops, type inference and variadic templates. If we adopt these three specific features, we will require: GCC >= 4.6 Clang >= 3.1 (or another suitable compiler!) A complete migration to C++11 would require: GCC >= 4.8.1 Clang >= 3.3 I propose that we adopt C++11 on a feature-by-feature basis, with discussion before requiring any bump in compiler version. We can track this in the wiki or similar. We could potentially consider introducing a couple of the "safer" features within the next release cycle. Maybe even in time for 0.92?! I will be pushing some demos of C++11 features to the branch lp:inkscape/~valavanisalex/inkscape/cpp11-port [2] for testing by other devs/testers before we consider merging anything into trunk. New Gnome development libraries need C++11 compiler support

Hi All, Time to revisit our old discussions about C++11 support (with some urgency). It seems that unstable versions of libsigc++ (as of version 2.4.1, I think) require the C++11 standard to be enabled by the compiler [1]. This is already causing build failures [2] so we need to act soon. Indeed, as suv points out in [2], many of the Gnome development libraries have switched over too. As far as I recall, older versions of OS X do not have a compiler that supports C++11 fully, so we'd risk killing off support for these users if we enforce the C++11 standard in Inkscape. Some options... 1. Add configuration tests to selectively enable C++11 only on systems with the new libraries... this could be complicated to maintain, though 2. Enforce C++11 builds, but forbid developers from using new features until they have been tested on a wide range of systems... I'm not sure how we'd enforce this once we've made it technically possible to build C++11 code 3. Enforce C++11 builds, and give developers "green light" to use new features. This is likely to cause problems for users of old OSes! Hi, I believe that I'm experiencing the bug described here (https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/418242). I'm finally sick enough of it to try to get it fixed. I want to start by mailing the list to find out what's going on, if it'll get fixed by some other development, etc. first. Comment #37 on the launchpad bug tracker mentions a patch. Switch

Hi to all. Im thinking going to work on "switch" code now "full" implemented in Inkscape but without GUI. Tav give me help on it. I have a idea on how to get working but have questions. Im focused on languaje selector but maybe im wrong, maybe need a full "switch" GUI with "requiredFeatures", "requiredExtensions" and "systemLanguage" conditional processing attributes. Realy Im not sure if "requiredFeatures" and "requiredExtensions" are useful to handle on Inkscape or maybe is better for use on the XML editor or raw SVG editing for the moment. In my mind, with language only point of view, I need a object dialog method to redraw a "switch", and a language -or "switch"- widget to: * Add multilenguage title and desc * Switch all "switches" to one lang * Add lang to a "switch". Global? * Remove a lang * Insert selected element to a new "switch" in the default lang. * Handle more Aria atributes? By the way, about "switches" in webpages with "systemLanguage" conditional processing attribute, whats the best way to user based switch a lang? We need a JS hack? Error compiling for Win64

Hello, today I wanted to build the latest trunk version for Win64, but I encountered an issue I don't know how to fix myself. Printing orientation issues

Hi folks, Inkscape does the print orientation thing wrongly. I'll try to explain. Most - but *NOT* all! - printers start printing on the top of a sheet which comes out of the printer in portrait. That means that if you have your inkscape (or other document) in portrait, it will be sent to the printer just like you have it on the screen. No rotation, no nothing. Everything fine. Inkscape assumes that all printers work this way. It's hard coded in (at least, I did not go that deep, sorry) src/ui/dialog/print.cpp: > if (doc_width > doc_height) { > gtk_page_setup_set_orientation (page_setup, GTK_PAGE_ORIENTATION_LANDSCAPE); > paper_size = gtk_paper_size_new_custom("custom", "custom", > doc_height, doc_width, GTK_UNIT_POINTS); I am not sure where the image is actually rotated (in Inkscape, the CUPS driver?), but the decision goes completely wrong when you have a printer that prints natively in landscape. This is the case for my label printer and my photo typesetter. And as I read in the web, I'm not the first one with that problem. The inkscape code is that "intelligent" that you can't even work around it by rotating the drawing before printing. It always comes out wrong. Amazing! I'm sorry that I can't provide a useful patch (I'm not good at application programming and all the high level stuff), but perhaps someone could fix this issue? It would be great to have some kind of config option that sounds like "Printer prints in landscape". Then this could be used to correct the decision if the image/print has to be turned. Hi Shlomi. Add a copy to original CC, maybe could be interesting to someone. Im using Evolution in a Debian Box in plain text mode. I usualy write whith the default "normal" mode that break links. I hope if I switch to "preformated" mode the links not broken anymore. Inkscape is holding elections for two vacant Board Member seats. As you may know, two of our seven Inkscape Board Members have resigned a few months ago. Now that all the infrastructure we need for an election is in place, we want to invite our Official Project Members¹ to run for a seat on the board. We encourage everyone of you to consider increasing your involvement in the project by applying as a candidate for the Inkscape Board. If you are an Official Project Member, and would like to run or to nominate someone, please send your suggestion to inkscape.elections.committee@...3260... We will then ask the person you nominated (if not you) if they are willing to accept their candidature. Details about the Board's duties, the application process and the election schedule can be found below: Duties Typically the board votes on things such as project fund expenditures (travel, conferences, marketing materials for events, etc), trademark related issue, other legal issues that arise, etc. The board does not have responsibility currently for technical decisions for the project, and does not handle social/community issues where there are no financial or legal aspects to the problem. Board membership requires a commitment of time: At a minimum you will be expected to participate in votes on the mailing list, which typically occur with a frequency of about 0 to 3 per month. You are required to be on the board mailing list, which has a volume of about 30-50 emails per month; you're not required to participate in the discussions, but it is very strongly encouraged. We also solicit volunteers from the board to serve as as event managers, team leaders, fundraising coordinators, etc. - Again, not a requirement, but we value board members who can shoulder such duties for the project. Board members will serve on the Board until they resign (or are removed from the Board under the provisions of the Fiscal Sponsorship Agreement with Software Conservancy — available on https://inkscape.org/en/about/governance/). Wrong positioning of guidelines on the typography extension

Hello, there! I am the original author of the typography extensions in Inkscape. Those were implemented roughly 4 years ago and used to work well. I tried using them again today and noticed that the positioning of the guidelines is wrong in the current development version of Inkscape. The specific one I'm talking about is: share/extensions/setup_typography_canvas.py Looking at git blame (I am using git bzr) I have seen that tavmjong did modify the code some months ago (actually in October 2014) adding a declaration of document units being in pixels. =================== commit 4c2c309889e6c7ad12ddd2479294ccc6f3564953 Author: tavmjong-free <tavmjong@...8...> Date: Thu Oct 9 11:25:39 2014 +0200 Add proper 'viewBox', set 'inkscape:document-units', set maximum em-size to 2048 as is typical in TrueType. =================== What I observe on the current misbehaviour is that the positioning of the guidelines is being done as if the units were given in millimeters... I'm not sure whose fault is this: If it is the parsing of the sp-guide parameters that ignore units, or if it is my extension that should explicitely append "px" to the values instead of simply passing plain unit-less numbers. Anyway... It's been a long time I've written this code and perhaps someone here who's been more active these years in the project may have a quick answer to my issue. Problems in rendering LaTeX in Windows 7

Dear all, I find my Inkscape 0.91 for Windows 7 64-bit has problems in rendering LaTeX. What I did was: 1) Extensions - Render - LaTeX 2) Enter "test" in LaTeX input 3) Click "Apply". Then, a cmd.exe window will pop out and just hang there. If I close this window, I get: Inkscape has received additional data from the script executed. The script did not return an error, but this may indicate the results will not be as expected. ^Cinvalid LaTeX input: test temporary files were left in: c:\users\admini~1\appdata\local\temp\inkscape-zxdypk Could anyone please help? Website is Back up

Website Down

Dear inkscape devels, docs and users, OSUOUL had a major database error (they accidentally dropped all their databases from their master database). They're restoring currently from a backup from two weeks ago, so any changes to the website in the last two weeks will need to be recreated. We do have content backups (cms etc) which we do each night, so if you've written something recently and would like content from the backup let me know. We don't keep backups of user registrations or uploaded gallery items so those in the last two weeks are gone. Like last time I swapped the database to a read only sqlite db from April. So at least the website shows base pages, there's still some errors since I really didn't expect database fallback to be a huge part of what we had to deal with but it's something we may want to improve if we think osuosl's database is likely to have problems again in the future.
