Hi all, Following are the meeting notes for the Developer Meeting on 10th July 2024: Attending: Rene, Tav, Ishaan, Elendil (Krlr17), Ravi Rene worked on dependencies and engaged in a few Windows related MRs. Also need to work on Documentation CI Tav working on bug report where there are no tooltips on menus. MacOS might not support tootips on menus. Elendil (Krlr17) informed Snap version is broken badly, so we shouldn't have it as default on Ubuntu. Export dialog does not work. A lot of issues reported for the snap version. We can ask Ted to join the next dev meeting to discuss the future of the snap. Ishaan managed to report a few bugs on MacOS. Was busy otherwise ^^ Ravi continued work on his GSoC Project (Node based filter editor). Opened an MR as well. More discussion on tooltips. Some history about Objective C and Swift from Rene. Rene discussed about not stopping jobs/pipelines on master as it breaks links. Next Meeting: Thursday, 18th July Thanks for everyone who was able to make it to the meeting! Hi Everyone, A quiet meeting this month, most issues were chatting about details, some omitted here. Event: https://inkscape.org/cals/event/1/ Attending: Mikekov, Martin, Tav, René, Ishaan Next meeting: July 10th 2024 * Martin and Tav reviewed the Bug accelerator program, making sure hours and tasks completed are reported and how the program might be improved next time. Finding issues to do was an issue for Tav who didn't have the link to the milestone page. * René wanted to review the release plan with Marc taking a break. We won't know more about if we'll have a tag this week or next but we'll try and keep everyone up to date. * Several people now don't have access to the Rocket Chat, because we are hesitant to upgrade it but at the same time need Jonathan and René and others to be able to continue to access the chat from their phones. * Tav reviewed the GSoC projects and each of the students. * We talked about macOS and some os the issues there now Tav has had a chance to look at some os the issues. We talked about the way the recent files' menu doesn't have tooltips and how to help remidy that. Some issues with fonts, some issues with Gtk4 were discussed. * Mikekov has been working on the supplimental color pickers and color wheel improvements. He's added a new color wheel type and has been looking of the speed issues with the new code. * Several people have had issues compiling on windows linking errors. Mikekov gave up trying to do development on windows for now. * We all reviewed the terrible delay in getting computers bought by the project and how we can work around the issue by buying the machines are getting reimbursed from the SFC instead. This is the action that Tav has taken, and Adam may also do this. Though we are aware of the restrictions this places on people who don't have the capital to purchas machines out of their own pockets. So we need a better system in any case. * Ishaan got a macOS from work and has been testing various things in 1.4 and 1.5. 1.5 seems to have the best experience on macOS. Has continued to work on selection changes, currently stuck on a problem with units. Martin helped walk through all the different coordinate systems in inkscape. * Ishaan also wanted to ask about a new contributor who is having issues building windows but is always communicating in private messages despite being asked not to. Ishaan wanted advice on how to handle it. Martin gave some advice about being clear and setting boundries and explaining why it's a problem to ask in the wrong channels. Today is a combination SFC catchup and developer meeting. Event: https://inkscape.org/cals/event/1/ Attending: Martin, Ishaan, Mc, MikeKov, pono, Ravi, René, skippr, Tav, Vaibhav Next event: 2nd Jul 2024 First SFC item was computers for Adam, Tav and Vaibhav. Pono said he'd work on these items today after his two other meetings. Second pono mentioned that the SFC is on it's way to being able to set up Patreon for us. There's some questions about how we should position ourselves on the platform if we wanted to join, and we defer the discussion for later. Third SFC item is about reviewing our trademark policy after the last time we touched it with Chris Roger's book and he thinks it's time to review now while there are no issues outstanding. Update on the release and the beta2 so we can continue the process. René and Marc are happy to make a release in the coming week and Martin suggests Friday the 28th. Marc says he'll be able to tag on Thursday the 27th and then René and others can build and publish the beta2 release over the weekend to have the final beta2 published by Sunday 30th. We will inform Maren and the other people who are involved in documentation and release notes and how much time they might need for the final release. Tav has been getting inkscape to work on his new Inkscape provided mac mini. Eventually using the René is holding off buying an Arm processor surface windows machine as it's quite expensive. Despite the promises of them being better machines. René had a look at the gimp code and how they are building Gtk3 for macOS. There's still some issues with our build and there may be things we can learn from them. Though what we can learn in time for any Gtk3 release we plan to do is an open question. Mikekov has been working on color sliders and the replacements for the spin buttons. Incorperating Tav's spin button widget work on top of Martin's color slider replacement work alongside much improved visual representation of the widgets. Mike wanted to know if he'd covered everything in the new widget needed. Martin suggested inviting in an accessability person in to review the new widget and tell us what kind of accessability is needed. Mikekov and Martin talk about colors, the need for color module colors and what's available in CSS. Color wheels and the way we handle colors per document or per object. Vaibhav worked on text on path UX improvements to add handles to be able to change how the text on path is working on canvas. Exciting work. Ravi has been working on their Google Sumer of Code project the Node based Filter Editor. Nearing completion of the base of the editor, and hoping to have all the basic functionality in terms of usage to be completed by the next two weeks. Skippr has been working on GSoC on the pen tool improvements; they are working with Adam to decide the key bindings for the functionality. The first part was editing nodes during drawing with the pen tool the next part is switching to the node tool while using the pen tool which is more tricky. The team thanks René for his work in ensuring our community is writing good commit messages and is teaching new contributors how to write better commit messages. Ishaan got the rubber bans and select tools all merged, and is now working on the selection ques styles. The styles are controllable in a basic way via a css theme file. He has a question about the thickness of the lines and the difference in handle position on master might need to be fixed. Thanks everyone for comming to this week's meeting. Hi José, thanks for letting us know, it's good that people look out for issues with documentation and help us out by informing the project. However, the location for the setting has recently changed, the text is correct, you'll see in the next beta. The mailing lists require a subscription to work properly, without subscribing, this is causing some amount of extra work for list administrators. Please subscribe if you'd like to use the mailing lists for informing the community. Dear developers, A big thank you to everyone who attended this meeting since it lasted two hours to do the drafting of the charter and all the other discussions as normal. Event: https://inkscape.org/cals/event/1/ Attending Martin, datalot, HendrikRoehm, Ishaan, Marc, MikeKov, Rafael, Ravi Arora, Tav, Vaibhav, Jonathan Next Event: Sunday June 16th Finalised the Developer team's new working group charter. This took most of the meeting, Jonathan will post the vote to the plc soon. We have tagged release 1.4 of lib2geom. Rafael is going to write release notes for it. Still to do: check out lib2geom submodule at release 1.4 in Inkscape repository, perhaps to be done in MR 6532. The team made a decision to release another beta. We reviewed all the merge requests targeting 1.4.x before we cut the beta release. Hendrik has an open merge request for master, he's new to the release and wants help to get it merged (backported) for the release 1.4. This was a fix for issues regarding to print settings and specifying page orientation as Portrait vs Landscape. We have looked at the Merge Request, decided that it's ready to merge, and merged it into the master branch. We talked about the beta release checklist and the possible dependencies being corect. One item on the checklist should be ensuring that all pending backports are integrated into the release branch. We mentioned the Python dependencies and discussed the way the versions of dependency packages are communicated. https://gitlab.com/inkscape/extensions/-/issues/575 Ishaan has been working on the selection user interface, making the "rubberbands" and the selection cues look prettier. The code is done and waiting for MR review (https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/-/merge_requests/6336). Mike, Rafael and Marc were all busy at their day jobs and didn't contribute much during the last week. Tav has been travelling which left him in a similar situation. For Vaibhav it was a light week, he fixed small problem with font selection in the Text Toolbar. Also started working on some on canvas TextPath improvements https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/-/merge_requests/6534 Martin managed to make a few fixes despite trying to take a mental break. He mostly worked on the Color Refactoring MR and starts to feel that the MR is ready to be merged. Although the MR is big and therefore risky, he believes that we should merge it instead of asking him to cope with comments that he views as sometimes overly strict and nit- picky. Although valuable clean-ups and theoretical future features were suggegsted, Martin believes that it might be more manageable to merge the MR first as it is and consider delivering those future improvements in later, smaller MRs. He pledges to be responsible for fixing any follow-up issues that may result. In addition, he fixed an issue related to URLs attached to semi- transparent objects during PDF export as a part of the Bug Accelerator program. Ravi is a GSoC member and is getting established and will be working on their project. Kyle (Vectors team) came to ask a question on whether any developers would be interested in participating in the creation of a video which highlights the fact that Inkscape is a project run by people, respects users' privacy, as opposed to commercial products. call of 'virtualenv' with option 'p=python3' syntactically wrong

Dear Maintainers, after pulling revision 5448704355e03a97d2838e1ba30272db335f0dbb I have built inkscape according to https://inkscape.org/develop/getting-started/ Trying to manage extensions (Extensions -> Manage Extensions) I receive the following error message: There has been a problem creating the python environment: Return Code: 3: b'' b'The path =python3 (from --python==python3) does not exist\n' args: ['/usr/bin/virtualenv', '-p=python3', '/home/xx/.config/inkscape/extensions'] Indeed the call is syntactically wrong. Instead of '-p=python3' the option '-p python3' ### without equal sign should be used. As far as I understand, the problem seems to exist in inkscape/share/extensions/extension-manager-bootstrap.py:69 call('virtualenv', TARGET_DIR, p='python3') which then in inkex/command.py:to_args() is evaluated to the wrong sytnax. According to the (very good) comments in to_args() :Keyword Arguments: * *name* (``str``) -- Becomes ``--name="val"`` ... * *n* (``str``) -- Becomes ``-n=val`` ... it should become ``-n val``. I do not know whether a change would result in problems using other programs that want -n=val. Which should that be? Hey fellow Developers, Event: https://inkscape.org/cals/event/1/ Attending: Marc, Adam, Martin, Ishaan, Jonathan, Mikekov, Vaibhav, Rafael Next event: Sat June 8th We talking about quotation marks and spelling reform in European languages. This was just a bit of fun while wiating for people to join. --------- Jonathan starts of the meeting by sharing a link to the Working Group policy document. The PDF file was missing from the website so Martin is adding it to the PLC team on the website so everyone can download it and follow the template. Martin talked about the two pots of powers that the working group policy wants to help define. The first is the powers that the project leadership comittee vests int he team regarding things like spending money and using the trademark. Jonathan adds that making a release for example is using (or trading) on Inkscape's mark. The second set of powers are things that anyone from any team could do, but that we want to monopolise those tasks and decisions into the team. For example making and "official" facebook group could be done by anyone, but the vectors team would probably want to monopolise the decision making process for that. Jonathan: If you want to initalise something, it should be clear who you have to ask and who doesn't have veto power. Martin wants the list of reponsibilities to be more definitive if possible. The team works through the template for the working group policy to make a draft, each developer was invited to partipate and suggest things: ----------- DRAFT CHARTER -------------- Name of the Working group: Development team Purpose: • Development of the Inkscape software Delegation • Manage and maintain the Inkscape git repository (i.e. deciding what gets merged, creating protected branches) • Decide about the build system (which systems developers can work on, which systems are supported) • Decide about dependencies, technical consultation with up- and downstream projects • Schedule, perform and publish all release stages, assess the stability of the release • Paid development affecting the Inkscape git needs to consult the dev team first before going to the PLC Additional Responsiblities: • Manage the CI infrastructure and configuration • Point of contact for vulnerability reporting • Onboarding new developers who want to contribute, provide developer mentorship (internally or through programs like Google Summer of Code, Outreachy) • Maintain developer-facing documentation, including Getting Started resources Interactions with other teams / working groups: • informing the Documentation team about relevant changes for releases, such as new or changed features • coordinate with the Testing team to maintain the bugtracker(s), make decisions about available tags, priorities / schedule • changes in the user interfaces should be coordinated with the UX team Meetings and (internal) communication: approx. weekly meeting as video call, announced at least a week prior on the project calendar; regular communication via chat.inkscape.org in team_devel Decision making process: by consensus of a quorum of 3 or more people Membership criterion: Initial members: Jonathan Neuhauser, Marc Jeanmougin, Martin Owens, Mike Kowalski, PBS, Rafael Siejakowski, René de Hesselle, Tavmjong Bah, Vaibhav Malik New members are confirmed by at least two current members. After two years of inactivity, members can be removed. ----------- END CHARTER -------------- The plan is to draft this over the comming week and make a decsion about the WG charter. Please get in touch if you have comments and suggestions. -------------- Developer activity: Vaibhav wanted to talk with Mikekov about the font collections, the team discusses how stable 1.4 is and what issues we're fixing and targeting for the release. He worked on a bunch of UI fixes. Addressing a freeze in the file selector dialog. Most of the program hours are consumed, will be reporting to Martin tomorrow for the blog post. Jonthan is jumping into fixing C++ bugs and is mostly done with the work he wanted to do on extensions. Martin has been working mostly on the color branch and fixing some issues with the bug accelerator program, not many hours used this month. Mikekov asked about clipping colors. Mikekov trying to work on the proposal from adam for fill and stroke styles. A couple of MRs and Martin wanted to talk about sp_desktop_style Rafael, some time into the sp-marker refactoring. Rewriting how sp- shapes create markers with about half the amount of code. The goal is to fix a lot of the issues and write tests and also improve the speed of the drawing system. There is still a lot of work for future reafactoring. Ishaan has been investigating how cairo draws lines. How the device scaling works. Hey everyone, Big thanks to the large number of people who were able to come to this week's meeting. We went long again because of how many great conversations we had about all sorts of things you can read below. Event: https://inkscape.org/cals/event/1/ Attending: Martin, Tav, Mikekov, Adam, René, ScislaC, skippr, Vaibhav, Ishaan. Marc Next event: Friday May 31st 2024 Tav wanted to talk about merge request 6446, a clarification and icon improvement set of changes to improve how icons get in toolbars get collapsed togther. Tav talked about the functionality and adam expressed how important it was to UX for this merge request to get in to 1.4. The developer team will ask translators to make sure the four extra strings won't be an issue. René has fixed the CI again for 1.4.x, the extensions were updated without checking if the tests were passing. René expresses his anger at having a broken CI for a couple of weeks and wants to make sure that everyone makes sure not to force merges in with test failures. Next week will be looking into the extensions deps requirement for FontConfig and text parsing. Martin talked about the review of the new text features in python/inkex extensions. This will likely get into 1.5 considering the large numbers of changes that will be needed in order to get it to the quality expected of the inkex internal API. Vaibhav, last week most of the week has been working on issues with the FontCollections dialog. Has fixed a bunch of issues and collected them into one MR. Adam has been testing a lot of merge requests and the developer team and we thank him. Vaibhav, Adam confirm they got an email from pono about the hardware purchases. Tav left early so we don't know, but assume he also got one. Marc, tried to find a good way to build master on all operating systems. Josh tested it on 24.04 and confirmed that this should now refix it. Marc is now 800 emails behind in his commitment to read all the activity because of the exceptional bug triaging by Adam these last two weeks. Mikekov, wants to thank Josh for testing his merge request finding an issue in the export dialog. It throws an exception because of it, but the display code keeps crashing out and hiding the real cause. Martin also got caught out with the problem since a thrown error doesn't show in the backtrace any more. Catching the error might be sensible. Marc wants to know when to when we should publish the next beta. Adam thinks there's still time. René asks if we should have a slot for bug triage for the bug accelerator program. Adam agrees. We still have some regressions, some blockers but we are making good progress. Jonathan has put some thinking into how to make released more fun to work on, especially bugs. Maybe some mugs and t-shirts to fix bugs. Jonathan fixed a third of the issues in tthe extensions tracker when he first joined and it's fun, it can be be for people to fix issues. Thought people do have different motivations. A good conversation was had by various people about how to improve developer attention on bugs in general. Jonathan and Adam have been thinking about how to ask users to help us fund these activities more and being more up front with our needs as a project. We've been looking at Thunderbird as a model for how to present these requests to users. Jonathan wanted to add it in for 1.4, though Martin and others suggest that with string freeze an exception might be required to get it in for 1.4 and a meeting with Maren would be a good idea. Martin suggests that spending the time and getting it right then releasing it as 1.4.1, and making sure we're coordinated to measure what the impact will be. We want to know what kind of response we get from users when we explain the situation we're in and designing the interface properly. Trying hard to get credit card transactions lined up beforehand if possible. Ishaan has had a slow week but was able to fix an issue with updating tiles with his new make selection in inkscape prettier merge request. Mikekov has some questions regarding colors, and mikekov and adam share their work on their ux issue which will take a while to get all working. Martin talked a little about the color branch and how this will all fit together. Jonathan wants to highlight the completion of the new working group policy. We will formalising how teams exist and their reponsibilities. We will be transforming the developer team to the developer working group, wwe need a charter which will be submitted to the plc. We'll review and spend next week's meeting May 31st. See everyone next week!

Hi All, Following are the meeting notes for the dev meeting on 15th May: Event: https://inkscape.org/cals/event/1/ Attending: Ishaan, Adam, Elendil (Krlr17), Martin, Mike, ScislaC, Tav, Vaibhav, Jonathan Next Event: May 23rd 2024 Martin: Some color refactoring work suggested by Mike Asked for some attention of the proof of concept and the method of using cairo and lcms2 to do the CMYK rendering. Ishaan: Integrated CSS support in rubberbands, some weird artifacts but some suggestions on how to fix that - look in _update, setting cache to 0 Adam: created MR to reduce size of spin buttons. Reviewed lots of MRs too. Some discussion on working color space vs rendering color space. Tav raised a concern that blending should be done in sRGB according to the SVG spec. Martin is aware that this is a departure from the spec but is required to render in CMYK. Martin asked after the Hardware program. Pono needs to contact Vaibhav and Adam Belis and has been poked. Tav and adam talk about wacom hardware crashes and the differences between 1.3 and 1.4 issues. Some discussion on automated testing of Inkscape, some suggestions. Some discussion on priorities - small papercuts over large time accumulate. A different program like BugFix Accelerator for such lower priority UX papercuts? Inbox is filled with duplicates which are not tagged as duplicates, Jonathan stumbled on clusters of those issues. Vaibhav: - Fixed some alignment and padding regressions in the toolbars. - Worked on some regressions in the star toolbar. - Spent a lot of time to implement selection across different hierarchical levels in the layers dialog. Hey devs, Sorry for the delay getting these notes out, hectic week of waking up early to attend the summit live feed video. Big thanks to the Renesse folks for keeping that live for the summit for Me, Jonathan and Rene. Event: https://inkscape.org/cals/event/1/ Attending: Marc, Adam, Mikekov, Tav, Rafael, Martin, Rene, Ben, Ishaan, Frederico Mana Quintero Next Event: May 15th 2024 Team "Renesse" at the Inkscape hosted summit in France: very busy with lots of things :) Some of them being: - Improving the UX of asking users to donate in Inkscape application and website - Discussing a possible hover based workflow for fill and stroke - Possible Fill and Stroke dialog simplification - PDF Text Import Improvements - SPMarker refactoring Rene: worked on fixing Windows CI for some breaking changes introduced by Gitlab Ben: introduced themselves and asked for suggestions on programming for Inkscape, various useful suggestions offered. Martin: asked for review of his color work. Is working on bug accelerator program. For the bug accelerator program, the quality of the prioritisation of the issues is concerning and we may need to hire a triage specialist for future programs to get better use out of our programmers. We updated the extensions in 1.4.x to the latest versions during the meeting. Ishaan: The fix custom user css for handles is ready for review. Asked for a review of Styling hierarchy in "Selection improvements" Frederico was invited to talk about the work he's doing on librsvg rendering. https://gnome.pages.gitlab.gnome.org/librsvg/devel-docs/render_tree.html some of the same issues apply to inkscape's renderer with cairo. Hey All, Thanks to everyone who came to this week's meeting. Event: https://inkscape.org/cals/event/1/ Attending: Martin, Ishaan, Marc, MikeKov, pbs, ScislaC, Tav, Vaibhav, Adam, Jonathan Next Meeting: May 7th Started talking about LGM/fest organisation. Five people are coming. Marc: - Published beta, now announced by vectors on social media - Looked into and discovered the issues with a bad graphicsmagic package. - Wrote a guide for new developers who want to help https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/-/issues/4855 - Marc wants to be able to inform translators to help do the translation process now. We do have a number of MRs with string changes, but most are minor except for one of mikekov's which will me merged soon. Next week will have a string semi-freeze to help with this. ScislaC: - The last trunk PPA build I have from over a month ago can open/import webp files and the current AppImage for 1.4.x fail. Marc thinks pillow needs the libs available. Martin: - Continuing the bug accel program. Will be writing the first monthly report on Wednesday. Jonathan: - Asked Tav, Vaibhav and Adam if they've managed to get their funded machines yet. Philip: - Will be building 1.4.x to help go through the backlog. - Polishing off last two merge requests. Document cleanup and boolops will be merged into master. - Has some ideas about where to go with writing Mikekov: - Font collections and font browser issues have been fixed. - Improvements to symbols dialog, it uses the clipboard which on macOS isn't currently working. Will publish their MR and pbs will look at it. Ishaan: - Continued work on selection improvements. Every tool should be able to set it's own style. There's some issue, it might be a race condition with the style that gets destroyed at the end. - Will publish the broken code so everyone can look at it and it can be reviewed. Vaibhav: - Last week update, Continued working on their open MRs related to gradient issues and a selection issue in the Layers dialog. Adam helped with testing and opened couple of new reports related to selection improvements in the layers dialog. Will be spending the coming week working on some of those and will try to update the open MRs. Tav: Fixing x/y attributes in pdf import to fix the editability. It's a bit of a cascading issue that causes more issues as things get fixed. The glyph table issues with combined glyphs and non-latin languages cause some issues. See you all next week. Hi All, Here are the meeting notes for today's dev meeting: Attending: Martin, Adam, Ishaan, Marc, Michèle, Rafael, René, skippr, pbs, Vaibhav # Beta Release Marc asked about when to release a Beta since there's not that many changes. Martin thinks an Alpha might still be useful, especially considering how much refactoring has happened in the meantime. But is unsure. Michèle thinks users will expect there be an Alpha and that if. Multiple betas are possible and considering the lack of critical issues in the bug accelerator milestone indicates that we could jump directly to beta. Martin says we should be ready in case the release has serious issues to pull it. But this is a very unlikely senario. Marc has time this week to put together the Beta and René says he should become available on wednesday. We are not going to do an alpha. (alpha/beta is semantics / communication only) We'll tag the 1.4-beta tonight # Contest Website isn't working so well, we're pointing people to vote. Some contest entries are fantastic, we're not openly sharing who we're voting for for fairness, but it's not a secret. # GSoc To be discussed in another place : gsoc selections and status of eligibility # Other Items [Marc] Minor packaging stuff, MR reviews [Rafael] Some work on PDF export - differences in output with rsvg. Make a progress bar for slow exports ? Hi All, Here are the meetingnotes for today's dev meeting: Attending: Tamir, Vaibhav, Mike, Rene, Jonathan, Ishaan Rene: Reactivated Windows CI for master branch. Not satisfied with the artifacts, window drawing in Windows is weird after the switch [no pun intended], might need to look into it. Vaibhav: Working on Bug Fix Accelerator, starting from easy to complex. Ishaan: Working on Selector Tool, Rene suggested to ask questions in the dev chat. Mike: Continuing work on the Symbols dialog. Jonathan: Failed to build master on 22.04, but got it working on Windows. No spot of Google Summer of Docs for Inkscape. Planning to ask about end user applications since most accepted projects are libraries. Generic Discussions: GTK4 Inkscape works for Tamir on Windows, yayy! Some discussion on Windows support since Windows 10 will be EOLed in 2025. Cursor icons are bigger than they should be, and then some discussion on GTK4 cursors and high dpi screens. Rene asked a question about Google Summer of Code students - Since they targetted pre-gtk4 versions of Inkscape for the 2-patch rule, are they able to work on post-gtk4 master. A public announcement might be required to ask them to rebase their work on master. Discussions about Developer role and how to minimize privileges. It might be difficult to disallow just a single person or person(s) from the Approval settings, that setting seems like it is group based. Thanks to those who were able to make today! Mike: Tried to adapt Look & Feel of master to GTK3, adjusting differences PBS: Brought Spellcheck back. Is looking into GTK4 regressions, and working on speeding up the Font dropdown. Some discussion about how to implement this best in GTK4. For rendering, waiting on feedback on cross-platform support for OpenGL. René: Tries to fix master CI for Windows. Helpful contributions by Max Gaukler. Next version for MacOS is in the works as well, xz fallout. Is checking the GSoC 2 patches for formal criteria. Marc suggested that the cutoff for the 2 patches is close to the decision date. Tav: tries to come up with a solution for editing text in imported PDFs, as there are currently only manual kerns, no spaces. Vaibhav: This week, I worked on fixing some regressions in the text and font dialog on master. Most of the regressions in the font tab are fixed, but I'm confused about the placement of the font size selector without breaking the symmetry of the dialog. Any inputs are appreciated. Dear Inkscape Developers, I hope you are doing well. My name is Julia Nguyen, and I am a passionate software developer with a keen interest in contributing to open-source projects. I recently came across Google Summer of Codes program which has an Inkscape project, and I am impressed by its commitment to providing a powerful and accessible vector graphics editor to the community. I am writing to introduce myself and express my interest in contributing to the development of Inkscape. I have a background in C++ and Java programming. I am particularly drawn to the project of improving the Paint Server Dialog, which I believe presents an exciting opportunity to enhance the user experience and functionality of Inkscape. I am interested in the project proposal for the Paint Server Dialog improvement that is available in the Google Summer of Codes Program, and I would greatly appreciate any feedback or suggestions from the community before finalizing my application. Here is some ideas that I have for the project: Gradient Support: Implement functionality to allow users to select and apply gradients for fill and stroke. This includes designing a user-friendly interface for creating, editing, and applying gradients within the dialog since it is a bit weird when I use it. Solid Color Integration Improvements : Enhance the dialog to include options for selecting and applying solid colors for fill and stroke. This involves designing intuitive controls for choosing from a palette of colors and applying them to objects. I thought of this because when I tried go fill a color, I noticed a line on the edges of the pictures that is not part of the stroke. I believe that these improvements will significantly enhance the usability and versatility of the Paint Server Dialog, ultimately benefiting the entire Inkscape community. I welcome any feedback, suggestions, or questions you may have regarding this proposal. I am eager to collaborate with the talented developers and designers in the Inkscape community to make this project a success. Hello all, I was informed that my patches need to demonstrate my ability to program in C/C++. I have tried to scrape together what I can in the time that I have had today. Either I can get better merges tonight or focus on finishing my proposal. I would prefer to finish working on my proposal, of course, but if I need to do more merges, I can. Hello everyone, My name is Kayla, I go by kpowkitty online. I have tried to reach out a couple of times on IRC about feedback on my proposal; I missed this emailing list. My apologies! I hope that does not take away from my standing with Inkscape. I have already made two patches: Patch 1 <https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/-/commit/a4959939e11b0253fbbaf12c3e1f1…>, Patch 2 <https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/-/commit/3501a56d3fcd66b8c89a0ea160e8a…> . I have also created a drawing <https://inkscape.org/~kpowkitty/%E2%98%85girl+1> with Inkscape. I have submitted my proposal to GSoC. Feedback would be much appreciated. I am proposing a refactor and renewal of Inkscape. Here is my project summary: Inkscape has been pieced together since 2003; a rocky C to C++ transition, the implementation of GTK (now GTK4!), and much more. Inkscape is sitting on a somewhat unstable foundation. To improve this foundation, the remaining C code will be transitioned to C++, redundant code and rough implementations will be reversed and renewed, and there will be documentation added. By implementing these things, Inkscape will have a better foundation for development, making it easier to expand upon. It will also bring better memory management and efficiency. Most importantly, the documentation will make it easier for new developers to approach Inkscape. All of these factors combined will not only help old developers, by providing them with a stronger foundation and reliable documentation, but it will also make Inkscape approachable to new developers, through shorter, clearer code and better instructions. Deliverables are: Refactored ui/tools/tool-base.cpp. SPDrawAnchor removed → SPKnot implemented. src/line-geometry.h/.cpp officially in lib2geom. Divided display directory. Inkscape’s handling of URIs and file names sorted. Inkscape::URIReference and derived classes simplified. Optional: Decide when and where to use Inkscape::URI / Inkscape::IO::UriInputStream and clean them up. Optional: Unified error/status message output. Reorganized file tree. Clear, concise directory names and file names. Doxygen commenting. One-line file descriptors. READMEs for all directories. Please let me know if there are any changes I need to make. Developer Meeting Notes; March 28th

Hey everyone, Big developer meeting this week, thanks to everyone who came and participated. Event: https://inkscape.org/cals/event/1/ Next Meeting: Friday April 5th, 1pm EST Attending: Marc, Martin, Mikekov, René, pbs, Ravi Arora, Tamir, Vaibhav, Tav, Javier ------- (René) We have macOS Apple silcon for Gtk4. We don't have intel support and we don't have a full test suite run. René wants to merge them with about 4 tests failing to recruit some help from other people. The new version of Gtk4 will be out soon. There is a time out delay in the test suite which René was hoping would be fixed in the next Gtk release, but hasn't so it'll have to be looked into as the test suite takes too long. Martin wanted to know how the macOS version on Gtk4 is performing. René reports that there is plenty of bugs, but the speed seems compariable. The extensions don't work yet. Some objects aren't appearing when drawn and pbs thinks this is a missed events. René will work on Windows development/building when the MSYS2 libraries are updated. ------- Mikekov has been trying to fix some regressions with 1.4.x, and has been fixing Gtk4 every now and then. Mikekov wants to merge the "Font selector UX study" into 1.4.x, it would be switched off by default. He's making a version for the Gtk4 master branch before it would ever be switched on. https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/-/merge_requests/4578 The developer team are ok with it being merged. ------- Vaibhav has been working on the toolbars, specifically issues with the text toolbar. It's almost ready to go. Mikekov mentioned the size of combo boxes in Gtk4. PBS had some ideas for how to set group priorities using boxes in the UI file by having boxes in boxes. Designers/UX-team can now customise the toolbars in such a way that they can decide what should disapear first when the toolbars are too small. ------- Jonathan asked about the SFC getting in touch. Martin and Vaibhav have recieved information from the SFC about the Bug Accelerator project. But Tav's email might have gotten eaten by his spam filter. Martin has signed the contract adjustment and will start working on bugs on April 1st. Vaibhav is communicating his details which should be complete by next week. ------- Martin and René worked on fixing a double parsing mystery issue in the color parser on macOS which turned out to be a long standing difference between clang and gcc with the C++ specification. Martin wrote a custom double parser for macOS and PBS suggested a possible function in lib2geom which might fix it too. (Martin) Rebasing the color branch for gtk4 - "new code". Some adjustement needed, but thankfully few of them. UI conflicts were easy to spot and look doable (still a few things like sliders, color drag and drop, to fix). The branch is big, and tiring to maintain. PBS offers help ------- (jabier) split of the mega corners fix into a 7 MR. It add stability to this LPE seems one or the most crashing one, by the way I implement beabiours to work as expected in operations like Join,Combine, Brak Apart, alowing retain spected results. Fix also lot of issues with knots than usualy crash even away of the LPE system. Also fix a issue in the status bar toolbar, targeted to windows OS, that fix a big lag randomly dragging and creation cause by a upstream bug in probably Pango or Label Gtk3 implementation. Finaly I do a Linux issue about redrawing SelectorStyle in status bar afecting debian Adwaita when we change some labels from normal to bold. Whole app is resized. ------- Ravi is contributing to GSoC looking at the node based editor using an infinate canvas with widgets. Experimenting with the Gtk4 branch and has noticed a lot of issues. Marc makes sure what everyone has their two merge requests accepted. ------- PBS had an unmerge request with SPDesktop refactoring which will be coming soon. A bunch of changes which he's wanted to fix for a while. Fixing lots of issues with popups and their life times. PBS asks the AppImage tool yanks the old app images and we should pin the app images. Marc says we need to store things in a place that we control. There are some issues with AppImages, for example it doesn't have GPU support. A possible tool to try out is AppImageCrafters. https://github.com/appimagecrafters/appimage-builder ------- Marc has been managing the GSoC and wants to make sure that their merge requsts and proposal drafts are getting reviewed in time. He asks everyone if they'd like to be mentors with GSoC. Jabier asks how much time it would take and Marc says that it really depends on the student as it can be as low as just reviewing the merge requests but it could be a student that needs a lot more help. ------- Martin would like to remind everyone to keep reviewing all merge requests if possible. ------- René explained why the version of XCode tools is pegged to a specific version to pbs and mikekov after the meeting ended. So technically this part of the meeting notes is impossible, since it was sent before people finished talking. See you all next time!

If you had an MR which was not marked as draft but had it's last activity more than 7 months ago, we might have closed your MR to keep things clean. Reopen branches and mark them as draft if you are still working on them. Some were also reviewed and approved. No further issues with DDos this week. # MacOS Rene has made it possible to get log files in the macOS tests on the CI. Probably an oversight in how it was created. The good news is that it's as fast as it used to be, under 5 minutes instead of 20 minutes. Achieved by downgrading to a previous os version likely a gtk issue. # Windows Wants to work on the Gtk4 windows builder. It's not ready yet, but expected int he next couple of days. # Gtk4 Tav has started working on a couple of different things. Doing the preview in the export dialog in the Gtk4 branch. Vaibhav is working on bug fixes on the Gtk4 branch this week. # Release Mikekov is looking at discrepencies between master and 1.3.x to see what is happening and what might need be fixed. Especially for the migration work. Made some MRs to adjust those small things, maintly cosmetic. Elendil - Reports an unstream windows issue with Pango which is fixed upstream but needs to make it's way to our msys2 builds. Dear Devs, Big thanks to everyone who came to our meeting and all the new faces who came to talk about their work this week with us. Also thanks to everyone who stuck around for 2 HOURS! We got through some deep talk and a bunch of merge requests in our backlog (see below) Meeting: https://inkscape.org/cals/event/1/ Attending: Martin, Mansi, Marc, MikeKov, pbs, Rafael, Siddhant Agarwal, Tav, Vaibhav Malik, Ishaan Next Meeting: March 4th 2024 = Website DDOS Situation Martin talked about the DDos attack against the website and reported what happened and what things have been put in place to help bring it back. The website is still being attacked today. (two days) = Gtk4 Work PBS builds a Gtk4 app image and we can get the CI to build it. Currently we use an old ubuntu for app image and a newer ubuntu for other builds. We can actually get over this if we use a new tool introduced for building app images. Philip would like to hand this work onto another developer if we can find someone who's interested in the work. Some bugs fixed in the gtk4 branch. There's some bugs which were fixed in gtk4 branch but not merged into master and he's working on finding them and porting them. = Testing PBS reports that since we upgraded to C++20, the 2geom code coverage isn't working any more. It'll need to be fixed or disabled. = Release Schedules We talked a lot about release schedules, if other teams are seeing our plans and are in sync with us. How hard our deadlines are and why we use strctured releases in our project to help keep things moving and keep contributions going out to users etc. Many more details were covered casually. Vaibhav wanted to talk about test coverage and how we can improve our automated testing. He's also been working on some regressions related to toolbars migration and regressions related to context menu selection logic. = Packaging Marc is working on a complete rework of the debian packaging stuff, separating stuff in multiple packages, no more "inkscape-trunk" incompatibilities, no more "separate branch" with deps. = Color Refactoring PBS, Mikekov and Rafael helped reviewing Martin's large color refactoring merge request and work through some of the issues as well as explaining how it's structured. Martin made a video to explain the outline and the other developers were able to review the various issues and how it needs to be improved going forwards. = Other Work PBS wants to finish the command line bitmap tracing branch for 1.4, somebody made a fork of inkscape and replaced the gui with a command line and someone else then tried backporting that back into inkscape to give us command line bitmap tracing. Mikekov has pushed a bunch of small bug fixes. There are so many things that have changed in 1.4 and there's some concerns that the refactoring will cause instability and we may not have the bug fixing resources. Mansi will be wrapping up revamping of filter gallery with one more mr :) (most of them have been fixed). Apart from them diving deep into rendering of selection tool and trying to figure out the cause of the issue - selection tool corner handles off by a small amount Siddhant wanted to ask about livarot functionality and the lib2geom GSoC and wanted to know what work had already been done. = Group Activity: Merge Request Review We work on our merge requests backlog as there is a large number of merge requests (90!) that need to be either merged or closed. Experienced contributors can now apply to fix issues for the 1.4 release, and get paid by the project! As per the vote [1], 5 merged MRs in inkscape/inkscape since the 1.3 release (July 23, 2023) are required. *Please read the document attached to the vote carefully if you plan to apply.* Contractors are expected to set aside at least 10hrs per week for the program (last year’s experience has shown that doing the contract in parallel to a full-time job is not sustainable). I hava a plentu of my code written into my inkscape-0.92.5 version of source code. Hi All, Here are the meeting notes for today's dev meeting: Attending: Mike, Jonathan, Skippr, Mansi, Tav, Rene, Ishaan Jonathan informed that we can start planning for the Bug Accelerator Program based on the responses on the mailing lists. Mansi worked on bevel filters and is working on other filters, also asked for any areas where help is required with Gtk4 migration. Tav suggested to start with Dialogs - comparing them with their Gtk3 counterparts, and trying to make them work if they don't work in Gtk4. Mike suggested to compile the Gtk4 branch and start using as a daily driver to identify any issues. Skippr worked on Snapping of Ellipse tool. Mike and Skippr discussed how to add an icon. Tav has been working on Drag and Drop and TreeLists. It might be closer to being a solved problem. Tav and Mike discussed about potentially converting the deprecated TreeView dialogs to the Gtk4 counterpart - TreeLists. Mike started to work on XML Dialog, focusing on the Attribute Editor. Potential conflict with Tav's work on XML Dialog was discussed. Rene has been working with build systems and Gtk4, and also rebuilt the CI environment. Rene also reduced CI timeouts to more sane values. Windows CI timeout limits being lower than required for Non project-member user forks was mentioned. Thanks to those who were able to make today! Hey everyone, Attending: Martin, Tav, Mikekov, Krlr17, NPJ, Mansi, Jonathan, Marc, René ------ Mansi - introduced themselves, they are from India and are a computer science and interested to help with Inkscape with the filters. Tav - XML editor rewriting it for Gtk4 compatibility trying to add drag and drop but it's a bit of a nightmare. The code hasn't been touched much in 20 years. There's a couple of different options, and he's going for the tree view. He copied the code from the object dialog, but it turns out the drag and drop wasn't working in the object dialog and it was segfaulting with an asserts. But even fixing those wasn't fixing it. We discussed the details further for ten minutes. Mikekov - Been on vacation but recommends studying the Gtk4 which details all the new concepts and it's going to be important for our developers to learn them and get comfortable with using it properly. Krlr17 - Martin wanted to know how the issues tracker is going, they said they could do with some help. On bug fixing they think a bug accelerator program would greatly help. For the triaging side, we should do a mentorship program where we spend some time getting new people into the project. People on the forum might be a good source of potential candidates. Jonthan - Bug accelerator program, has a draft but is not ready to be submitted. The goal is to have people apply for the position. We talked briefly about the way the new project should be run. We created a poll to ask people who would be interested in joining the hiring committee. Marc and Jonathan said yes. Everyone else abstained. Another poll for who would be interested, and there were people who answered yes (named withheld). A third poll about if we should run the program again came back with a 100% in favor vote that we should do it. Jonathan will set up a PLC vote at the weekend. René - Martin asked about a testing bug on macOS and René will look at it and will be able to run the whole test suite locally to find out what's going on. René is reviewing the mac-statium article and keep in touch with those guys. Also working on Gtk building stuff in general. We talked briefly about rocket chat, matrix and alternative chat, we will continue to have this chat to make sure we're doing the right thing. Hey everyone, Inkscape has hosted our own chat services at chat.inkscape.org since 2018, we've been using the open source server RocketChat in order to provide the project communication for both internal use and for interacting with users and answering their questions. The Rocket Chat upstream organisation has recently become hostile to it's users and admins, developing all sorts of covert design patterns to push self-hosted instances into signing up to expensive per-user licenses and proprietary extensions. It's also sending information about our server back to rocket chat themselves. The most recent upgrade has left us with a difficult and problematic path ahead as we can't really continue to use rocket chat as a server software. But this has to be a community wide discussion as the service is the most used internal communication channel and is used by many people and many teams for lots of things. These are the questions I need you to answer, please reply here or send me a personal email or message with your answers: == Questionnaire == 1. Do you think we should move away from rocket chat? This is a nominal question since I don't think we can administratively support it going forwards, but we should know your thoughts anyway. 2. Should we reverse engineer the rocket chat database in order to try and keep the history? There are no known tools of retaining the history and if we move to another chat system, our history will be wiped clean. How is history important to you or the project? 3. What replacement chat systems have you used with other projects that you think might be a good fit for our use cases? (see below) 4. Can you expand upon our use cases with the ways you current use, or know that our rocket chat is being used? (see below) 5. Installing build dependencies on Ubuntu using APT

I am trying to build inkscape (master) on Ubuntu 22.04. The list of dependencies is long, and for each of them I am "guessing" the package name I need to install in APT. Thanks to a tiny bit of experience, googling and APT autocompletion, this is possible, though it takes 10sec to a few minutes for each package. But I feel I am missing something. Is there no smarter way than this guessing? Sincerely, Thomas

Inkscape 1.4 preparations and schedule

Hi all ! As you could see in Martin's email, we've been discussing release-related topics earlier in the developer meeting. We have mostly decided to carry out a release this year as usual (with a release in May), which will be using *GTK3*. Hence, later this year the master branch will lead to a 1.4.x branch, and after this point the gtk4 branch will be merged into master. We have this year a more modest amount of big shiny features into the release, but that's not an issue, and certainly not a reason to not make them available to our users :) However since it means that master is currently fairly stable, this gives some leeway to add simple features and changes if needed. If you plan to do "big" changes for 1.4 (or changes to the "core" (rendering, etc)), please get in touch on the chat as soon as possible to discuss them (before middle of January), otherwise for things like UX improvements or new isolated functions, feel free to work on them until the beginning of March, at which point we'll branch and produce a Beta (and then, only bugfixes until the release, as usual) Bugfixes are always welcome until late in the release process to get a polished release. Thanks to everyone who came today; Attending: Marc, Jonathan, Martin, René, Tav, James, Mikekov Next Meeting: Tuesday January 16th Calendar: https://inkscape.org/cals/event/1/ # FOSDEM We started by talking about FOSDEM, confirming which days we would be available. We need to book train tickets, Mark will be asking his employer, Martin will be asking pono. # Release Planning We spent the end of the meeting planning out the 1.4 release and what this would look like. We have decided that we will have one more Gtk3 release with fewer features for 2024 to give us extra room to making the Gtk4 release as good as it can be. There will be a refactoring freeze in a about a week and a feature freeze in a couple of months. So if developers have plans for features and fixes, now is the time to focus on getting them into 1.4 The Gtk4 branch merge will be posponed until after the 1.4.x branch split to make this process easier. # Developer topics Marc - Needed to update the windows store version of Inkscape Martin - Working on color refactoring, including a mass of tests and talked about using gtest in advanced ways James - Continuing work on fixing issues with the sp-grid and dealing with older files and making sure we're not corrupting old files too much. Marc and Martin pointed james towards an old archive on openclipart svgs to search for wild data. René - Has been working on the Gtk4 building for windows 7zip and will proceed from there into macOS building. It now compiles thanks to some fixes from pbs. - Additionally, MacStadium will release an article about us we don't know the contents but they've been friendly. - Is thinking about what we will do at LGM in Ren, France. It's not close to much. We talked a bit about the cutural ameinaties of various european towns. Mikekov - Has been working on a path specific element in the object attribute dialog. Designed by adam, It's requiring a refactoring and it'll take a bit of time to complete. - Found a new book for Gtk4 which describes the way the data model works and thinks others should read it too. How is the automatic/background font substitution implemented?

If opening a file using font "Times" in Inkscape on a Windows machine without that font installed, it uses Arial for rendering instead. For all the cases I tried, including generic font names such as "serif" and "sans-serif", it defaulted to the best replacement candidate that I know of. How is that implemented? Is this logic part of Inkscape itself? Does it use an external library? Does it use some service/interface on Windows (which other apps apparently don't use)? Most apps do this well on Linux, because they simply rely on fontconfig. But very few apps do well on Windows. Good job, thanks :) Sincerely, Thomas

Thanks for the reply and the links. I am sorry for the confusion in my previous email. What I really wanted were the Inkscape binaries between 1.2.2 and 1.3. Now things have moved a bit to the root. I got the 1.3-dev commit binaries from https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/-/pipelines. Although there are no binaries for every commit, I also tried my best to narrow the problem down to the commit between 3e2761dd (2022-08-23) and 89b3c1d1 (2022-08-22). I cannot find a binary for Windows between the two commits. 89b3c1d1 commit works fine, while 3e2761dd commit shows the problems I reported in the original post. Dear Inkscape developers, I should report the following potential bug in GitLab, but I cannot do so because I am unable to register an account on GitLab. I am asking the question on the forums and the chat channel. I do not get a solution. The problem is reported and discussed here: https://inkscape.org/forums/beyond/13-and-131-are-very-very-slow-opening-a-… and I think https://inkscape.org/forums/questions/the-pdf-file-does-not-open-in-version… reported the same problem. I also searched the issues on GitLab, there are several similar reports, for example https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inbox/-/issues/8503 and https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/-/issues/4597#note_1568155608. The OS I am running Inkscape on is Windows 10 and 11 Home Edition. I have encountered this issue with Inkscape 1.3, 1.3.1 and 1.3.2. Inkscape 1.2.x works fine. I've previously tried to hack on the codebase, but I'm a Qt developer, so found it difficult even to just modify UI dialogs, which will be important to provide an option to switch to GPU rendering. Even though I've started writing a new vector graphics tool with Qt, and gotten Skia working with OpenGL, I'd rather prefer not to re-incorporate Inkscape's functionality. Kind Regards, Ben Cottrell

Dear Inkscape Community, Here are the meeting notes from today's developer meeting: Meeting: https://inkscape.org/cals/event/1/ Present: Martin, Tav, Jabier, Jonathan, René, pbs, Ishaan, Jabier Next Meeting: Nov 5th René: CI Updates for MacOS and Windows. Windows CI switched to Gitlab. We did not respond to MacStadium runners, Rene contacted MacStadium for Windows runners, waiting for their reply. Gitlab CI minute consumption might increase because of this. Might need to switch to manual pipelines, this month hopefully can be passed without going over limit. 2 MRs for 1.3.x - Final updates for MacOS and Windows An idea for cleaning stale branches in the repository. Tav: Worked on File Dialogs, and building a native dialog on Windows. Some things are not present in Gtk4, like combo boxes, they're substituted by drop downs. Also looked at some glib::ustring vs std::string issues. pbs: Worked on polishing Handles - auto-reloading, finer snapping for some handles. Jabier: Working on Gtk4 dnd file, some MRs for 1.3.1 need merging (unrelated to LPEs) Ishaan: Worked on more website stuff, this week was mostly setting up local VMs. Plan to try with new dependencies and Django on a local VM in coming week. Once that is done, a box can be asked from OSUOSL. Discussions: Discussion about Native Dialog MRs (by Martin and Ted). Do we need to drop File Previews or work with upstream. Is it better to use Native dialogs or our custom one which has a marginal maintenance burden. Jonathan suggested the preview on Windows can be offloaded to any program of our choosing by modifying Registry keys. Jonathan asked about some xaml submodule updates. Martin suggested to prepare an MR for 1.3.1 pbs mentioned Inkview is very close, blocked on one file for Gtk4 pbs asked about a main gtk4 branch and Tav mentioned that it should be created rather soon. Should it be a branch or an MR? No resolution as of now. branch might be messy - "dev within dev" - anyone can rebase on top of MR's branch pbs also asked about when should the gtk4 stuff be merged. Some questions about Color manangement work by Martin - is it GPU compatible? because copying from main memory to GPU memory would be very slow - relevant if we plan to use a GPU renderer. Dear Inkscape Community, Here are the meeting notes from today's developer meeting: Meeting: https://inkscape.org/cals/event/1/ Present: S.Ouchene, Martin, Tav, Marc, Krlr17, MikeKov, Jabier, Jonathan, René Next Meeting: October 28th # Gtk4 Tav has been working on the File Fialogs. When investigating the code there appear to be so many classes which at first seem like it's too many, but it's actually a permutation of open, save, windows, gtk. The real problem is the mixed up way they're written. The new Gtk4 dialogs all return Gio::File objects, and we should be using these more within our own code to avoid the conversions between std::string and Glib::ustring. Issues with the filter drop-down, keeping things in sync. Probably get rid of the win32 dialogs. Martin suggests not spending too much time trying to keep functionality which we will probably have to redesign anyway or that would take a ton of work to support. Especially if it involves hacking the Gtk widget tree in the dialog which is prone to errors. # Building and Infrastructure Marc asked Rene why the macstatium runner doesn't any more, it's blocking the 1.3.x branch. Rene wasn't aware of any issues, but to cope with it we can migrate it to the normal windows runners. There are some permissions issues to work out between Rene and Patrick to make sure the machines are accessible by more people as Rene doesn't have access to the machine Checking out CI minutes. We're ok, but cutting it close with the amount of spare minutes. Marc wanted to ask about a specific merge request related to building and CI. A short explanation about windows docker. Although this is probably not available to GitLab, but worth checking out as downloads of depedencies take the longest time in our builds and cutting this part out would be very good. Rene has been working on dependency updates. Looking into Gtk3 and 4 deps. Especially regarding libadwaita which is complicated to build with deps that don't build yet on macOS. Working through the depedency stack, for example cairo has made all their symbols private like poppler. This is worth keeping in mind when we use private symbols. Brief talk about the use of font config and freetype uses in inkscape. Libjpeg-turbo claims to be much faster than regular jpeg library. It's supposed to be compatible and more capable. Rene is interested because jpeg is built really early. Mike says it has asembler instructions for intel and wonders if this would work on macOS. Rene will make a test to try it out. # Next Version (1.3) Martin talked about his 1.3.x backporting work, some basic requests for how to tag merge requests for the backport and the target dates. All work should be completed by the end of the month giving people enough time to test 1.3.1rc1 (or similar). Jabier has finished helping with the fixes for LPE crashes and offers to help with the backporting process. But he has some worries about possible regressions from his fixes in the LPE code and asks for help testing the LPEs. Marc provides a crash issue and asks about if it's fixed. # Color Refactoring Martin has been working on doing the color refactoring. There are two main ideas, the first is to make sure colors that use profiles are tied to their profiles using a URIHandler, so we can see what objects are in use and clean them up. We can also use this to make a list of used colors for the palettes. The second is to support different spaces and not convert everything to sRGB in order to store the numbers in our code. An icc profile is not required to specify a different color space, and we should be able to output css4 like colors (for example hsl(...)) Marc shared an older merge request with his work on refactoring and Martin said this would be useful to compare it all. Mike asked for a location for color profiles and we talked breifly about color profile data. # Other Business Mikekov has been helping with merge requests. Jonthan has been waiting on feedback for the grants proposal. We'll be meeting with pono on Monday after a two week gap in SFC meetings for various things. Hey Everyone, Thanks to those who were able to make today's develop meeting Attending: Alezzacreative, Jonathan, Marc, Martin, Krlr17, Ishaan, Tav Calendar: https://inkscape.org/cals/event/1/ Next Meeting: 12th October 2023 # FOSSSDem FOSSDem call for dev rooms. We need to decide if we're going to team up with another project, the room is mostly focused on presentation and on technical and development side. So we expect technical presentations and would need to be able to fill the room for at least half a day. Martin asked Marc to head up organing the effort so we have a main person who can act as the driver and ask other projects. # Packaging Marc has some packaging stuff to take care of for Linux; a bunch of issues to look at in the coming week. Martin wanted to know about the backports task, Jonathan suggested to do the testing for each of the issues to make sure it's all working. One month to go before the release and is still the plan, Martin will tell vectors so they have time. Krlr17 reports that the windows builds are not available on the website currently. Marc knows about the issue. # Grant Prooposal Jonathan reports back his meeting with pono about the grants funding project; he has found that we wouldn't ever be able to a hybrid system of allowing users to donate towards specific projects. But without that part of the proposal it would still be possible to attract donations for the global fund. # Gtk4 Migration Tav has been doing more Gtk4 stuff, trying to deal with some filename issues. It's much more particular about conversing std string and Glib::ustring classes. It's a bit tough as it's a windows specific issue because filenames are stored on windows as UTF16 but UTF8 on linux and mac. Tav is working on a script to make Images Gtk4 compatible. Daniel has been progressing on small items, still working on both his Gtk4 branch and bringing things into master when they can be. We reviewed the Gtk4 contract progress, the amount of money we're spending down and the type of work being done within the terms of the contract. Martin has talked about the merge conflicts that are happening, mostly he's holding onto large feature merge requests. Other developers might be waiting for the Gtk4 work to complete before developing new things. # Color Management System Martin gave a talk about his CMS work, the user interface, color picking the kinds of assumptions and workflows. Dear Developers, Thanks to everyone who came to this week's meeting. Attending: Marc, Martin, René, S.Ourchene, Tav, Jabier, Ishaan, Amenzou Meeting: https://inkscape.org/cals/event/1/ Next Date: Tuesday September 26th, 2023 Portable Apps wish for us to distribute the windows64/32 build for Inkscape 1.3. The releases policy we talked about and seems reasonable is to offer trust to fellow members who are working within the project who document the scripts and process for how the release is put together. An email has been sent back to invite them to particpate more closely and document their work. Everyone took turns to ask Tav questions about text. It's ask Tav day! Some looking at merge requests and issues, one about how to process text in the layout. Tav worked on the toolbar Gtk4 work and researching all the items that are needing for all the new widget allocations. Marc wants the toolbar work to use a merge commit, instead of squashing the commit. Tav and Rene wants to do this work collectively at the next developer meeting. Ishaan has continued working on the updates for the website. Working through each of the possible breaking changes progressively in a private branch. Rene wanted to know when 1.3.1 might be released, Martin says he's expecting November time, Marc says we need to commit all our backports which is a task for Martin in the coming weeks. Jabier has a MR that is ready to be reviwed. 5763, it needs feedback from adam. Martin has been working on CMS improvements with a UI improvement merge request which is being reviewed by designers mostly. Good feedback about the process of desktop preference profiles vs. document profiles and future work needed on color pickers. Tav has some concerns that we wouldn't be able to build AppImages with Gtk4. Dear Devs, Thanks to everyone who came to today's developer meeting. Attending: Martin, Jonathan, Tav, Hendrick, Hash, Ishaan, Jabiertxo, PBS Calendar: https://inkscape.org/cals/event/1/ Next meeting: Monday, September 18th # Extensions Jonathan has been completing his speed and API improvements to the extensions style based API. Martin has continued work on the CMYK PDF Exporter, is planning on producing a CMYK JPEG and TIFF exporter as part of the work needed for that, but it should provide extra functionality outside of the PDF work. It may need more packaging work for the binary Python Image Library or another color management library support, will know more in the coming weeks. # Improvements Hendrick - Second time in this meeting, really interesting starting work on Inkscape and like last time he's focusing on the maths side for offsetting paths. If one thinks about it from the maths side instead of the code side he sees a lot of room for improvement. In a process of discovery and keeping some attention on performance. Lib2Geom is quite nice because it's quite fast and they can be used for the pure maths construction. For example a cubic bezier curve it only checks a couple of points to test how good the approximations are and we can do better. Jabier worked on an improvement to the spray tool. Martin has a question about backporting tool improvements after all the event refactoring for Gtk4. Special merge requests will be needed and tested for each instance. # Gtk4 Work Tav and PBS has been working on Gtk4 stuff, getting very close to working on Gtk4 directly. The big project currently in the toolbar work. There are a couple of bugs with a couple of widgets which change size or that cause the window to change size when you change tools. But it's usable so we can merge it in sooner. PBS has been working on Gtk4 branch, we should keep to using a public shared branch to reduce the duplicate work if we're working from private branches. # Infrastructure Jonathan has been working on the paid projects work with pono and Martin, a small confusion has pono talk to Karen before we were finished drafting and he got the wrong idea of the proposal. We need to be clearer where in the process we are during drafting. We need to move to C++20 and use the CI builder to know if some feature is available in the build system. AppImage targets Ubuntu 20.04, Martin suggests using a PPA to install new Gnu tools, but Marc wasn't available so we don't know what the real limitations are. Ishaan has been working on improving the website to a new Django version. Wanted to know what kind of policy we should have for upgrading libraries when they are deprecated. Dear Developers, Very quiet set of weeks, there was no notes from last week's developer meeting. This week with have a couple of updates. Attending: Marc, Tav, René, Martin, Adam Event: https://inkscape.org/cals/event/1/ # MacOS Pipeline A much quicker pipeline has been comitted and will reduce the number of minutes used in our development as well as speeding up the result. # macOS Re-Release René is going to re-publish the 1.3 macOS release for macOS for back2wards compatability for High Seira. Related to the python extensions when using an old version of macOS. # Bug Fixing Martin has been fixing issues with 1.3.1, hit on a problem with the bleed and margins that needed more attention to correct some data problems with unit handling. # Gtk4 Tav thinks we're coming to the end of the prep work for Gtk4, event handling specifically and we can not start planning for Gtk4 switch over. Hey Everyone, Thanks to everyone who came to the developer meeting this week. Event: https://inkscape.org/cals/event/1/ Present: Rafael, Marc, Martin, Thomas Holder, Mikekov, Gre, Nicco, Rene, Jonathan Next Meeting: Tuesday, August 1st 2023 (1 hour after the SFC catch up meeting) # New Stable Release Congratulations everyone for the release. We've had about 25k downloads today. The responses in all the social media and news sites has been very positive so far. We're all very happy with the release, although we understand there are still some rough patches. Martin wants to say that he’s very proud of being able to work with everyone this last year and hopes everyone knows how much they rock. Request for the website developer: Add all the download numbers together from the releases into the download page. Maybe cache the number so it's not so over requesting. This time we made the RC and final installers days before the final release date so we have a lot more buffer than usual and could fix issues with the msi build without too much stress. Even the windows store creator didn't crash this time. So this year’s release went much smoother. Marc - Made the windows installers signed, self-signed so they still get a warning about trust. But the notice dialog will now say it's by "Inkscape" which is slightly better than "Unknown" # Ongoing Fixes The 1.3.x branch is unfrozen, so please apply fixes and things which you can apply to the 1.3, including backports which couldn't be applied to 1.3 in time. Don't spend too much time making features which can only apply to 1.3 even if we have some disruption with 1.4's Gtk4 migration. Rene wanted to ask that we keep 1.3.x issues tagged properly so Martin can work on them with his bug fixing contract. # Other Developments Nicco has been working on the AI contract extension. He's been working on live path effects for rectangles which works quite nice. He'll be working on styles next, gradients and other elements. Jonathan has been unavailable because of parental leave. Rafael has started looking at some problems in lib2geom, specifically to do with arcs, there was a good implementation which didn't have all the cases covered. We've worked on stabilizing the numerical stability of the current methods, but we're reaching the end of what can be done with these methods. There are some new mathematics which use a degree four polynomial the basis of which has been added already. This is all to fix the intersections of two ellipse/arcs. Rafael we may add a rotate box in the select tool. Marc has some concerns that it might be cluttering. Martin suggests that a configurable toolbar would allow non-default features which could be switched on. Although some users think this is essential, Marc thinks they could use the transform dialog instead. Thomas has joined us to congratulate us for the new release. He was trying out some new features and hit some limitations so has coded it. Martin hasn't been available because of a bereavement; wants to thank everyone for covering him while he’s been away. Has made a poll for his sponsors what they want him to work on for the coming year. He'll be focusing on CapyPDF for CMYK PDF output and the secondary project will be the connectors tool which has been waiting for a while. Jonathan joins us to congratulate us on a great release. # Gtk4 No one was available to talk about Gtk4 this week. # Infrastructure Marc reported our CI builder minutes usage on GitLab skyrocketed. There is some discussion about the possible future CI configurations, running them ourselves etc. Intel machines for macOS, Linux machines, etc. Rene reports that the Gnome project is having isolation problems in their CI builder but they don't have anyone to look after the machine. Rene has concerns that the Gnome project isn't committed to macOS and might not be trustworthy. So even though he could spend time helping Gnome, he fears it might be a waste of his volunteer time. There may be some interpersonal or cultural issues that need to be unpicked. Marin suggested we need to get together with the Gnome project and try and talk it out. He's got an open ticket so they can use his macOS CI runner for glib. # Events We have some interest in tracking FOSSDEM and LGM events. And seeing if we can run a dev room, or a booth or what might be possible. Lots of interesting topics for a dev room. Editable SVG, Gtk4, and other cross-project collaboration. Jonathan and Martin briefly review the support-us links that come from the welcome screen. We need to do a full review of those pages to remove old content that points to launchpad for example. # The 1.3 Release About screen needs to be added to the repository. Marc is preparing the main release candidate and is adding the about screen in. News, version and RC tag. If everything goes right then tag it as 1.3. Michéle asks if we're on track; it sounds like we are. Vector's team is ready and waiting for the release itself. Marc says the date of the release can be between the 21st and 23rd in the release notes. Jonathan reports that the extensions are ready for 1.3 and no issues or blockers. Martin and Marc bump the extensions version 1.3 to make sure it's tagged correctly. The macOS build has a few commits to get in for the release. Specifically related to the ghostscript error. Regressions and the mingw issues with glib appaear to have been fixed. Reviewing the website download redirects and which versions we want to go where. Going through Nathan's release checklist: https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inbox/-/issues/7983 Does the dev team think the 1.3 is stable? * 2 stable than ever * 2 votes for stable enough * 0 for unstable but ok * 0 for not stable enough. # The Next Version A short discussion about how to milestone issues for 1.3.1 and some of the merge requests which are not being packported for 1.3 but will be included in 1.3.1. Issues should have milestones so the bug accelerator contractor (Martin) can work on them. Marc asks Tav how the Gtk4 project is going. Tav says that things are going fine and they're slowly making their way through things with multiple people contributing. The actual Gtk4 build is a ways off, but the Gtk3 migrations will be merged sooner rather than later. Martin asks about the assessed scale of the project and if we feel like we've accounted for the size of the work correctly and if we're on track. Tav says that he feels at this stage we've done a good job of figuring out the size of the task. René asks if we should ask Microsoft to sponsor our signed certificate. It might help make Inkscape easier to install with fewer warnings. # Upsteam Relationship with Gnome René has been trying to get into the Gnome project's request for macOS assistance and them moving to "a best effort" rather than a comitment to it. Martin comments about how much we should be re-enforcing out relationship with Gnome and making sure we are a healthy downstream project. Helping them with things that they need to make sure the infrastructure and other components they need are in place. # Other Things Mikekov has been working on some blockers and his extension gallery user interface feature. Gre/Dilip has come with a few ideas. Rewards for getting involved, incouraging people to contribute to stock graphics. The dev team encourgae them to talk to the vectors team about specific ideas. The dev team can't do too much here. Jonathan reviews a few things in the AI importer. Nicco has official completed his contract time. And Jonathan has come to terms with the architecture which actually makes it easier to test things. The review is to go over how or if we're going to continue with the second half of the contract. Present: Adam, KrIr17, Marc, Martin, MikeKov, PBS, René, Tav Mc: First pass on all translation MRs, ported to master. Also introduced three small MRs for translations, and updated the French translations. On the weekend, will look at everything with backport-proposed and decide whether they will be backported, then tag 1.3-RC. Jonathan will update the extensions submodule before 1.3-RC. Release currently targeted for July 21-23 (per Vector's meeting notes). KrIr17: Brings up https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/-/issues/4177#note_1348567353, which breaks CLI on Ubuntu 23.04. PBS mentions a complex history upstream, but will look into it. René will check whether it affects MacOS too. MikeKov: worked on https://gitlab.com/inkscape/ux/-/issues/205, will try to submit a draft soon. Jonathan: Some extensions API cleanup, created the vote for extending Martin's contract. René: working on the Windows side, windows CI in master is now completely running on Gitlab infrastructure. The 7z is built by every pipeline, exe and msi installer are created on-demand. Next, he will restore the "download latest dev build" on the website. Thinks about backporting the new Windows pipeline to 1.3.x. Upside: current set of msys dependencies also works on Windows 7, despite MSYS2 not officially supporting it anymore. René has dropped 32bit support. Windows pipeline is currently designed to fail after almost two hours and restart itself, because otherwise it would take too long. In June, we have used 18000/50000 "compute units". After the release, will move Mibap to deps group. Tav: Worked on the Device Manager and Input Dialog. Conclusion: need to be discarded. Overly complicated code with no documentation. Probably useful for the GTK2 era, not anymore in GTK3. Fixed a few crashes inside those dialogs regardless. Will have a meeting with Daniel Boles start of next week to plan their work packages. René asks to be informed when to look into GTK4 dependencies on MacOS / Windows. PBS: Working on event controllers. There was more GTK4 talk in the end, but I had to leave on time. Dear Developer Team. Date: 22nd June 2023 Event: https://inkscape.org/cals/event/1/ Attending: Martin, René, Sanodhya, Tav, Mikekov, Nicco Next Meeting: 30th June 2023 Since last week's announcement from René that he was taking over the windows CI building process he wanted to walk us through the CI builds and demonstrating the builder on GitLab. There are two windows items in the build system list, a build step which builds all of the binary objects and then three parallel distribution steps for the nsis, 7zip and exe installer objects. Before this work the windows CI was the same as macOS, and it was disabled for people outside of the inkscape project itself. But now it's open to everyone who creates branches of inkscape. René asks where the best place to put documentation about the new system. The change in the deps collection means changing msys2installdeps.sh no longer changes the deps that the CI builder will use. Martin recommended putting breadcrumb links in the main repository and full documentation in the new windows CI deps repository to explain how everything works. Tav has worked on a couple of things. Replaced context menus with new Gtk4 stuff and it's been a little frustrating with things that are different. There's a units context menu on rulers, but it has one problem, it's using actions which are radio buttons and when you pop up a context menu with radio buttons it doesn't automatically pop down. We'll leave it like this for now. Everything has to be converted to using Gio menus and that will take some time. One context menu was removed from the svg font dialog which wasn't very discoverable. Next a drop down issue which was presented by mikekov where we have multiple columns and Tav looked into the new Gtk DropDown Gtk4 object and we can replace the Listview inside it with a GridView object. There's some fragility which might prevent us from replacing ComboBoxes correctly. There's a ListItem disconnection problem that he's trying to fix. The Interactive Gtk debugger is a god send for this work. The new Gtk4 expert starts on the 1st of the month. Nicco, trying to get into the work again and it's working out well. Has been working on parsing and doing a pair programming session with Jonathan and now have a complete raster support. Jonathan did some extensions refactoring trying to change the internal data structures for paths to improve the performance with numpy especially for large paths but keeping the API the same. Mikekov requests a fix to one of the extensions, the layout extensions needs one line added to fix missing deps problems. Martin says this extension should be moved from an effect extension to a template extension to prevent the crash and be more applicable. Otherwise he's been playing with grids, the new modular grid which is quite popular as a new feature on social media. Martin has been working on improving the shape builder tool with new semi-transparent canvas options controllable with a slider and a working shape builder fracturing process for raster images. These are in heavy draft and aren't ready for a merge request. Sanidhya has been working on their GSoC project. Pono is setting up a weekly meeting, but the details are yet to be confirmed. Likely after the SFC's conference. Martin will be in Barcelona next week at PenpotFest talking about Editable SVG. Jonathan is charged with running the next meeting, but it might be a quiet social if folk are unavailable. This week's group task was going through old merge requests; we looked at five WIP requests which are now old and possibly not useful. One was assigned to Martin to review and the rest were closed. Hi everyone, Date: Wednesday June 14th 2023 Attending: Martin, René, Mikekov, Nicco, Tav, Jonathan, Julia Johannesen Next Meeting: Thursday June 22nd 2023 Tav has been investigating color management as well as all the Gtk4 work. Tav, showed us a Firefox bug that doesn't apply the profile correctly, using the Red to Green profile on the screen showed only img tags were flipped. But the rest of the web page's colors are not flipped. Martin suggest that if the ICC profile is applied twice then you would get a complete inversion in Firefox showing normal colors. This may or may not be the issue in Firefox, but it brings us to Inkscape. Double correction may effect us in Inkscape when we set a screen profile. Between wayland, x11, win32, osx and how Inkscape transforms it's own canvas for rendering. Pulling in ICC profiles automatically from the screen seems like the wrong approach anyway since the screen should already be color corrected anyway and almost guarantees a double conversion. Tav would like us to eventually end up with multiple monitor support in our configuration settings and allow per monitor ICC profiles. But only manually. Some monitor features are only supported in Wayland, so x11 may not detect the monitor the app is on correctly, Tav is still researching the issues. Martin wanted to talk about a simplified story of color management to help himself and other developers understand what it is color management is for, and hopefully allow us to know the terms. He says at the moment he imagines three basic sections of color management in Inkscape. The screen Profile which is typically in RGB changes the canvas rendering, The Device Profile which is used for PDF output (when we support that) and showing out of gamut errors on the screen and the individual Color Selector profiles which aren't anything to do with either displaying colors and are only sometimes important for printing. Their first job is to allow the user to select colors within the color space, say selecting a CMYK color profile would allow the user to select a CMYK color reliably. The second function of individual color profiles is to select spot colors and unique inks, foils, etc. this information IS passed onto PDF output, but is also important to let the user select for example how much of that ink to show for example. Tav says everyone is confused about color management online, not just in Inkscape. So it's important for us to understand the whole system and hopefully write some documentation about it. René is assuming control of the windows CI builder. The last contributor who was interested was a long time ago, so René is taking control of it. For a first step he's taken all the tutorials, guides and all the things we tell users about how to do things for windows. This is used in René's new GitHub account which builds Inkscape using the msys2 on the GitHub CI builders. GitHub was used because the machines are more powerful and are set up is better. For example using ccache and take a lot less time to run and even then it's 20 minutes for each correction. A new project has been created in GitLab which collects all the deps into an archive so we have a mechanism to counteract the rolling release model in msys2 which causes us a lot of rolling pain. Pinning the versions in msys to make the builds more dependable during development processes. Martin asked that this new project be moved to the deps group in GitLab. René's GitLab now has a new build step which is being tested for a few weeks to get used to it. This should fix the hacky setup we currently have with rerunning builds when they quit half way through. We should end up with two separate jobs. Estimated time frame for improvements is between 3 and 6 months depending on how things go. Jonathan thanks René for taking responsibility for the windows builds and is wondering about how this effects Gtk4, which allows us to build with mvs c++ native compiler which should be much faster than msys2. He tried it with stock Gtk4 apps. Julia Jonannesen confirmed that she had also tried the Gtk4 windows compile and got it to work. Mikekov has been working on translations and improving the polish translations but worked on some things for templates. Martin thanked him for focusing on fixing the templating translations. Nicco is getting back into the work schedule after taking a break and is coming to the end of the contract and has only a week or two of work left. He's focusing on documentation and wrapping up where the project has finally ended up. We'll talk about a review meeting soon. Martin, after taking a week off, has been working on a draft feature that allows extensions authors to add pre-processing actions which take the svg and change it, or augment it with information only inkscape knows about. Like bounding boxes, text paths. As well as refactoring the svg2 to svg1.1 compatibility code which are all converted into actions. Also been working on tidying up remaining issues and focusing on bugs reported by his patreons for the 1.3 release. -------------- The team spent the last ten minutes of the meeting looking at merge requests. First on the back-port proposed requests and second on some older WIP requests which are now no longer marked as draft. These are being closed if they are very old, but can be re-opened if needed. Extensions are up to date in both branches. No objections to string freeze = now. We've checked the backlog together, no more MRs with backport:proposed that contain string changes. *Vectors update/ Release planning*: Usually 6 week window for translations -> release around July 23rd at Vector's discretion Tarball needs to be ready ~ July 14. Testing completeness of packages? -> testing script by Nathan Release video: Lazur is doing something Release candidate: early July(no more non-obvious fixes after that) Windows 7 support has been dropped by MSYS2, so Inkscape 1.3 will officially not work on Windows 7. *Discussion re: po/pot files* Translators are supposed to use the pot file from the pipeline, but some are instead using (outdated) po files from the repository. - Should we update them? ~5m LOC change. Maren supports it. [done] - How are other projects doing that? -> some are using weblate, which (at least previously) doesn't like big POT files. Nicco used transifex (free for open source) - Could be a student project to refactor the way we organize translations. *René * MacOS ARM test failures in 1.3 branch? There is a problem on the Gitlab side, which affects the file structure. Moved the pipeline back to our own runner. Struggling to find time to re-release 1.2.2 including the Ventura fixes. The Alpha/Beta are already Ventura-compatible. Has not bought the new Apple developer certificate yet, will do so later this month. *Jonathan* AI Extension:work on importing text+ code for the different coordinate systems seems to be mature *Nicco* Progress a bit slow at the moment, but the roadmap is clear. Some work on live shapes / rectangles. Checks again with SFC for April payment. *PBS* Added coverage support to 2geom. Currently 47% coverage. Trying to join the GKT4 migration effort, e.g. dialogs + mjakemans event controller branch. Few minor issues remain, e.g. double-click to select text Why is modal dialogs not available in GTK4? They have deprecated it in favor of gtk::Window and AlertDialog (4.10+). Both of them can be made modal. [+ additional discussion about the event loop, other GKT4 MRs] Clips / Mask: We treat it the same. Conceptually, clipping is a vector operation and masking a pixel operation, and in the spec, different child elements are allowed. Needs a little bit of rewriting. Backport MR with cache fixes? Can only break what was already broken -> Marc decides. *Tav* Most things on the list "before the switch" to GTK4 are done. Hey Everyone, This week's meeting notes might be incomplete, I had to leave before people had stopped talking. But I don't think these notes are missing too much: Meeting: Monday 29th May 2023 Next Meeting: Tuesday 6th June 2023 Attending: Jonathan, Nicco, Martin, René, Tav, Marc, PBS # Beta Release Marc has worked on and published all the beta release files to the website. A brief talk about the beta release schedule and how our scheduling works between the release manager (Marc) and the macOS release engineer (René). The new release for macOS is built today and is now live. René has informed vectors so they can schedule themselves as needed. More updates for macOS libraries to keep everything sharp for 1.3. Extensions needs to be branched to 1.3.x now though because of string freeze. Jonathan is going to push his menu updates forwards now. Though he will need to ask Maren if this is ok. The beta has the right welcome screens, but the wrong about screen. Marc will work on fixing this. René needs to write a short bit of instructions for an artist to be able to do it themselves. # Crossink René and Martin have worked on getting the cross-compiler working so linux programmers can generate windows builds. This functionality has atrophied a little since Jan. # GitLab Infrastructure Some issues with the testing stage on GitLab. It's a bumpy road to clear up. There's problems between how one's own machine works compared to their runners. # Color Management Tav has been working on some of the color management stuff but will put it to oneside for now so he can work on Gtk4. Marc, Martin, Tav and Philip talk about the color management support will work for Wayland. Trying and keep as much of the code as possible, but remove the bits that interact directly with Gtk3 and X11 only paths. # Other Items Nicco has been working on positioning and getting items in the right places. Martin's not been doing much beyond preparing merges and fixes for beta and helping out where possible. Tav and Jonathan talk mesh gradients wrt to the ai importer as well as Adobe's thinking on mesh gradients. GSoc toolbar refactoring is going to take a lot of discussion to make sure we get the best fix. The way widgets fall off the end of the toolbar is a design which we now have to do ourselves. Marc continued to work on the dithering patch. A discussion was had about the details of working upstream. Marc has talked about moving away from cairo. See you all Tuesday! Branching and stuff

Hi everyone ! We've now branched off the 1.3.x series ! What this means, in practice : - The master branch is open for business as usual : new features, GSoC projects, gtk4 preparation, etc. The version number there will soon be "1.4-dev" - New bugfixes that affect 1.3 series have to be backported : make a MR for master if it affects master, and either put "backport-proposed" label on it, or another MR directly targeting 1.3.x with the fix cherry-picked. - Beta is happening soon, hopefully for this weekend. - String freeze is happening soon : after the first week of June, no MR to 1.3.x can contain string changes, so that translators can work with a stable pot file (Note to translators : we don't expect much new strings or changes until then). Exceptions can be made on a case by case basis but will be advertised by email to the translator list. Translations can be then submitted until beginning of July for the release. Hey everyone, I'm sure you all got the attached message if you are an inkscape member. We now have two new Project Leadership Committee members and all seats are now filled. Thanks to Pono for being the proctor for this election. Congratulations to René and Jonathan and also thank you for stepping up and taking on the responsibilities. It's going to be awesome having you guys involved in the leadership committee. Ted or Pono, I think we need to send a message to the SFC and get the two new members inducted? I believe they need to be on the inkscape and sfc mailing lists. Is there anything else needed? ---- One personal note; we have regressed a little in terms of diversity on the plc. We used to have a non-programmer member, but now all members are from the developer team, white, male and western. Not for a lack of trying, but I think we should keep an eye on our diversity in the project and see if there anything we can do to help invite more people in and help them stick around so they get to be on the plc too. Dear developer team, It was a quiete Sunday meeting today, here are your notes: Meetings: Sunday 21st May 2023 Next Meeting: Monday 29th May 2023 René, Tav, Mikekov, Martin, Jonathan, Nicco Week was eventful for René because GitLab announced their Arm builders are now available but also announced that they are decomissioning their intel runners within two weeks at the end of May. René had to run around to patch together a way keep our CI builders working. Various movements of machines had to be planned or re-planned because of this short notice from GitLab. We're having problems getting responses from Pono and the SFC for various issues. Tav hasn't heard back about the Gtk4 contract, a PLC candidate didn't hear back when they had questions about standing for the PLC election, Jonathan hasn't heard back in two weeks about questions he has regarding the bug accelorator program. To help figure out what's going on, Jonathan is going to try and talk with Pono after the hiring committee meeting later in the week. Tav worked on some demonstration code for multi column dropdowns and generally looking into the Gtk4 migration more. Mikekov looked into translations and is worried about the systems for polish translations and the quality of code reviews. Developers are struggling with the review of these requests. Martin suggests the po directory should be split out into it's own git submodule for portability, Jonathan suggests using special folder ownership to indicate which teams in inkscape can approve changes, Mikekov explores some tooling and what might have gone wrong in the past for the polish translations. Recommended that this conversation be moved to the translators mailing list so that team can make the decisions about what it wants to do. Jonathan has been doing some assumption checking in the AI importer project. Adobe has managed to create filters which in svg are three lines, but in ai files take a hundred lines. Nicco has been working on units and scaling and has written a lot of tests. Slow but stead progress. Chris Rogers is at Wilber Week, please let him know if you have any questions. Marc may be joining him but we don't know if he's going yet. There will be a beta branching event this week, 23rd May, if Marc is available. We need to follow up with the plans for the week. This isn't a beta /release/ as that can happen after. Any open merge requests will have to be duplicated in order to make it into 1.3 after this date. Jonathan has been looking into a contract extension for the bug accelerator project. Originally for three people, reduce to two. Rafael dropped out. Martin has been doing amazing work and we could do with more of his time to work on these issues. The issue will be raised with PLC members. Martin has been working on PDF importers and fixing various regressions. Adding more tests to make it harder to break various complex files. The developer team group activity this week was looking into a few old and new merge requests. Some MRs were approved, some older MRs which were still WIP were closed. Developer Team Meeting Notes - May 13th 2023

Date: Saturday, May 13th 2023 Present: René, Martin, PBS, Jonathan (presiding) Apologies: Tav We started talking about the live previewing functionality for the font tool and how the display and canvas items stacks might be modified to support displaying previews without changing the entire document. Extensions already have a live preview and use a whole new document which is fed in from the extension run. A document copy can be expensive, but might be the cheapest way to do it. The alternative is to create a kind of shadow item which would be tightly controlled by C++ destructors and modifier signals. But that was just an idea. Mikekov's font improvements branch is available for review. It contains a lot of nice improvements, but it looks a bit large. Jonathan is working with Nicco on the AI exporter. The rewrite is nearly complete and Nicco has been able to work 10-15 hours a week on it. The code structure is better and it's a lot faster, maybe an order of magnitude. Making good progress, we'll have to see as we get to the end of the project and then Jonathan will make a presentation for everyone. Gtk contracts; Tav was the only internal application and so he's been selected by us. It's with the SFC now, although no response from pono these past few weeks. We now have three applications for the Gtk4 external contractor. Details of who and what are withheld not to bias anyone's decision. PLC elections are coming up soon. There are 2 confirmed candidates and one person is still deciding. There's very few days left to put your name forwards! Please also review membership requests as soon as possible. Martin needs his merge requests approved. Paint order one is important since it contains tests to be used in another merge request. Jonathan was able to approve it before the end of the meeting. Martin changed the dev graphics for the windows builds. Mostly these won't ever be used, but it's better to have branch specific versions instead of the old 1.0 graphics in the branch. Jonathan highlighted a number of regressions and crashes in the PDF importer. Encouraged to tag them and push their priority up as crashes and regressions are top priority. PBS worked on the shape builder (well done!) and has now been working on the lib2geom problems. He's trying to read the entire mailing list archive for the whole lib2geom project as well as livarot and learn how it works, why it works, and getting in the head space of the people who were involved in building these libraries. He says working on some bugs is tricky but they need some more work to complete. But he has made a fork/branch which turns inkscape into a lib2geom toy which shows all the computational shapes and can show the output at each step. There's calculations for the geometric graph and there's parts of it that become out of sync he speculates. Seeing if caching is actually slowing us down and often turning off cache can actually speed things up. The problem is how often we don't use the cache, but spend time making the cache. He wants to look into ways of fixing it properly. Requesting feedback for these items. René discussed spellchecking with Moini and polygon. There's a lot of confusion about how the spellchecker is supposed to work on macOS. In Linux it's easy you just ask the os for one of the available spell checkers. macOS is baked in. But on windows there's a problem because we a building it with Aspell and there are no pre-built dictionaries which people can install themselves, they have to be compiled. We could ship Hunspell instead, and we can depend on what LibreOffice is doing and it downloads the available system. There's an issue in inbox which Maren created as a summary. René is encouraged to make a non-inbox issue and we can ask some people to help fix it since it's windows based. This is a sort meeting this week. Dear Developers, Here are this week's meeting notes. This week was a bit lighter because the meeting happened at the same time as the PLC updates meeting. Attending: Tav, Martn, Marc, René Jonathan, Jabier, Nicco, Mikekov, James Next Meeting: 13th May 2023 Calendar: https://inkscape.org/cals/event/1/ # Beta schedule There are a few high priority issues left to fix. A particular concern is the slowdown in start times on windows which is the only blocker left. The release seems really solid otherwise and no large issues remain. We have decided to put together a Beta release for the 23rd May when Marc is at the Wilber week and available to dedicate time to it. Jonathan wants an earlier beta fork so the Gtm4 migration can start as soon as possible and break master for that work. Briefly looked at the font collections issues and seeing if there's problems we have to pay attention to. Are we getting all the issues that we want fixed tagged for the 1.3 milestone? Notice to all developers to make sure you tag issues that you think ort to be fixed for the release. # Gtk4 Project Updates for the Gtk4 work happened in the PLC meeting, but basically there's two applicants so far. Though other jobs we've posted have more applicants towards the end of the period. # GitLab Infrastructure Gitlab is updating and everyone should have seen the various warnings. René has looked through the changes and confirmed nothing effects us. The CI builder for macOS was transitioned to GitLab's own machines, it's going to cost credits so we should keep an eye on that as it comes out of beta. It's slower too. There's some oddities in how the test builds works on gitlab it has to rebuild everything each time, so it's caching isn't as good. # Shape Builder PBS, Rafael and Martin have been working to fix shape builder issues. PBS has been leading the charge on the geometry problems. Martin has a shape builder templates addition which Jonathan thinks should depend on how well the feature works after the fixes. Otherwise we risk exposing those issues which are fairly bad. # Other work New fix for the object to path which preserves the paint order when converting. MR looks good but Documentation will need to be up to date for the object to path behaviour changes. Marc has been busy with his work, so wasn't working on inkscape this week. René has been working on the upsteam depedencies, fixes have been accepted upstream without any testing and this is a worry. This is just as true for library updates. Will keep us informed. Nicco and Jonathan have worked on the newer faster AI parser. Which works well. Completely parsed a whole document without any unknown lines in the AI file. Next is to create an inkscape logo and import that. Payment is recieved, so there's no issues so far. Mikekov, working on the object picker for 1.4, working well and thanks Martin for the code review which has fixed. # Bug Accelerator Project The program is going well, see burndown charts on GitLab. We talked briefly about what to do about Rafael bowing out and if he should be replaced at this late stage. We also looked at the rate of fixes and hours used for Martin. Martin recused himself of talking about what to do, but Jonathan wants to talk to pono about possibly moving some of the hours around because of the extended release schedule leaves us with a gap in bug fixing coverage at the very end of the release cycle. Dear Developers, This week's meeting notes are here. Next Developer Meeting in May 8th https://inkscape.org/cals/1/ Attending: MikeKov, Nicco, René, Jonathan, Martin, Vansh Uppa, Rafael, Tav Apologies: Marc René updated the build pipeline for macOS, mostly small cleanups which open us up to back-porting Ventura support to 1.2.x the target is this weekend and we can be finally done with the venture issue. Working on more automation to improve release procedures, upgrade openssl which is a little old now. Looking into contributing to the Gtk osx upstream. Jonathan has been doing preparatory work for importers, checking files are rendered correctly. Helping with the object structure importer. Dividing up the work. A single person so far in the Gtk external position, the prospect is an experienced gtkmm programmer. No one has yet applied for the internal position, the deadline is Sunday. Developers were all reminded of the deadlines. Martin recorded a user-session (a session where an Inkscape user and developer explore new functionality and locate bugs together). Also collected issues from his direct sponsors, this week Martin has been working through these lists of issues. Most are small fixes but some larger works including fixing a much needed Font Toolbar problem and import and export issues. Some are refactoring for 1.3.1 but others are scheduled for 1.3. Not many issues for the Accelerator Program this week as that wasn't a focus. Grid properties issues were worked on by Mikekov and Martin. Grids work to fix all the issues, happy with the refactoring overall, but even though users won't see any benefit, it's a good change under the hood. A refactoring branch is schedule for 1.3.1 Mikekov also has been cleaning up runtime warnings. Rafael has been helping out with various merge requests and bugs. He's dropping out of the bug accelerator program because he's feeling it's more pressure than expected and more like a job. He suggested perhaps a bug bounty program would be more casual and more comfortable for him. Jonathan thanked Rafael for his involvement and his feedback. Giving contractors the right information about how /working/ for Inkscape is different than volunteering should be included in future programs. Tav worked on the color management refactoring. There's a color profile element, which is a bit of a catch all and contains too much functionality so it will need to be progressively cleaned out over time. The developer shad a discussion about the differences between Display, Device and element icc profiles and what functionality is intended by each. More research is needed. Jonathan is interested in hosting a smaller, possibly European centric developer meet-up in the Autumn. Five people in the developer meeting indicated their interest. It would all depend on scheduling and booking places to stay. The Gimp project is hosting an event in May; Martin received an invitation to participate and talk about the integration potential between Blender, Gimp and Inkscape. The event is being hosted at the Blender HQ in Amsterdam. The invites have been forwarded to Marc and Chris R. as the people who are both physically close and with the most experience with the topic. Only travel funding would be required from our side as the Gimp project have hired a boat to stay in. ---- This weeks group activity was reviewing a merge request by Vansh Uppa, where Martin and Mikekov had a difference of opinion about interface design principles and a discussion was had about the best was of designing functionality so that it both safe, less disruptive and consistant. Time for another meeting, big thanks to everyone who was able to make it today. Present: Martin, René, Jonathan, Mikekov, Nicco, Tav, Marc Next Meeting: Thursday 19th April 2023 Calendar: https://inkscape.org/cals/event/1/ # Outreach The developer team would like to thank the tireless work of the vectors team; Tav asked is there a way we can do something for them? Martin suggested that we have mentioned in the past funding some food and drink for online events and the vectors team does like to do a release party event. Perhaps that's a good way to say thank you. Will need to reach out. There was a question about how to keep the alpha release on the website front page. We didn't know what the vectors team wanted to do, but the developer team didn't ask for anything specific. Though some developers were not even sure if we had released the alpha as they looked at the front page of the website for news. Nicco added a simple news article, we should make sure this is formatted ok with the people that update the news regularly. # macOS Not much happening with macOS dependencies, but the most important future task is migrating the build system from 1.3alpha to 1.2.2 but René is quite busy with real life at the moment. Was able to test a few things like the fonts and the tests. There was a question of macOS supports variable font support. It should be there if it's there in Linux, but we're not sure, it will need research to know if that's true. We do know that halfbuzz is not upgraded on macOS, so we may have to help fix the issues. We know that everyone uses halfbuzz for text rendering these days. Martin reported a problem with macOS tests on the CI builder related to fonts. Wrote a new svg file to test functions but it's 1.5% wrong and that doesn't pass the 1% fuzziness. May increase the padding to reduce the fuzzy problems. René did recieve the funding for the Apple building machine and now he would like a hardware policy to help make it easier to fund hardware for developers. He will ask various people for information and get back to use for it. # Font Refreshing Martin asked about including the font refresh merge request in 1.3. The consensus was that this is a new feature and most developers haven't seen this feature in other programs. But some programmers did express sympathy with users that this is a long standing issue in Inkscape but ask everyone to bare with us. Each operating system will need it's own implementation. There's two main issues one is the signal from the operating system that fonts have changed at all, and the second is asking pango/fontconfig to refresh it's font context. We know that these are not always available in macOS and Windows and so we may have to fix things upstream in order to enable them. # Windows Builds for Testers We have a conflict between the size of the zip files and the difficult to use 7z file format which requires the use of an external tool. The dev team concluded in a poll that we should move to zip files for the CI builds. This doesn't effect any releases, not even alpha/beta etc, only the merge request CI builds. We tested in the meeting with a screenshare and showed that windows will warn users to extract the files, running the main file will fail without extracting. The files still need extracting. Some other alternatives were proposed such as CAB and Portable Exe. Zip seems like the easiest to implement so Marc has added it as a task. # XML with Line feeds in Attributes Martin has a merge request to 1. write out xml files with any line feeds correctly translated to xml escaped chars and 2. To allow users to more directly add these in the xml editor using Shift+Return. There was no objection to the former, but the later needed some discussion. We concluded that since you can already add these lines using copy and paste, there wasn't anything to be gained by blocking a merge request with such a small risk profile. # AI Importer Nicco continues work on ai importer and rectangles and the new parser for speed. There's thoughts about how to reuse the work and package things with some forethought. Jonathan says they've been working on speed because the difference is so stark. How should the parsing and writing be structured? Reading through the file in a defined manner is the goal. # Gtk Hiring Jonathan reports that the current status is the job posting is out and people are being contacted by pono. One business contacted directly has an interested party who works on gtkmm and would quit his job and do the work, but he would need extra time to give notice and this might for example make some delay for the project's start. It's good news that there are people who are qualified and are available to work on this important project. We should be clear and careful about helping people who are not used to being contractors and offer guidance to anyone who ends up working with us. # Other work Tav wants to work on Display ICC (color) profiles which we need to look at because of the Gtk4 work. In the rendering of the canvas there's a step which applies a given icc profile. This depends on the screen/seat properties in Gdk/Gtk. Researching what's there and what might be needed is ongoing work. Some of this is code cleanup which will help going forwards. More to report next week. Mikekov is working on the item picker. Pono and Martin ran a test on the website to run an election as a trial run for the up and coming PLC election, it went well. Email issues were fixed. It's now waiting for pono to create the main election event. Martin did an run down of the new font collections functionality with a user, and may make a video of it from the big blue button recording. # Google Summer of Code (GSoc) Marc, we are missing a mentor for GSoC, 4 people who can be selected. 3 can be selected. Would Mikekov be available to help with a particular project? The specific subjects are withheld from the notes to not leak which projects are being selected before the time. The meeting was running late and we didn't get to any activities this week.

Dear developers, Apologies for the lateness of these notes. Present: NPJ, Martin, Mikekov, René, Tav, Nicco, Marc, Jonathan Next Dev Meeting: Wed 19th April 2023 # About Screen About screen contest winner. General talk about the process, the winner, the runners up and the vote. René asked for the svg to use in the macOS release and we pointed him to the vectors channel. The vector's team social media version with text is really nice. # Alpha Alpha appears to be going well. People are reporting bugs using the alpha, but nothing critical has cropped out giving us hope it's a solid release. Martin completed his ALPHA TESTER video, which was shared through big blue button. It's a silly video but people have responded well to it. René, sorry for missing a few meetings. Nothing to report, alpha looks good on macOS. For reasons unknown the builder has some issues and needed to be rewritten in time for the alpha and René worked over time. Dev team thanked him for the extra effort pushing that through on a deadline. # General Work Martin has been working on a text fix for PDF output which he'd like Tav to review. It's reordering how text is rendered to cairo so strokes apear behind fills when needed. NPJ has been playing with the clang optimizations. Using a large export to test the results, using htop and watching the cpu and gpu. Mikekov, not much progress. Looking for things to do, Martin suggests working on the PDF linking user interface. # Gtk4 Research Tav has done a search for Gtkmm experts and exchanged emails with the main person at Gtkmm who does want to leave maintence, which we already knew. Finding an expert to work on it might be hard. Tav also looked in past Gtkmm contributors for names, some people might be contactable and looked at wikipedia to find people and programs that use Gtkmm or have upgraded to Gtk4. GNote is the only app that's Gtkmm and Gtk4 so far. Martin asked if we can find someone in Gtk main. Possibly. Someone asked how easy is maintaining Gtkmm, can it be automatically generated? Marc says if there is a rust version, which isn't far away from C++ Notice: Hiring team meeting on Thursday! # AI Importer Nicco, planning on implementing more features. Working on shapes. Reporting to a blog wasn't known at the start of the contract and so we're learning along the way. Open a requirements issue to describe what the targets are. The next month may be a bit slower. Bendchmark files are the guide for how much of the format we've supported so far. Jonathan has done more reverse engineering. Mostly text. There's some really interesting path interpriatation that AI must be doing with the data for backwards compatability since changing the lowest data on say a rectangles rounded corner doesn't change anything, but changing it's path does. Even if it has matricies applied to the path. Must be pretty fancy. # Activities We processed three merge requests and reviewed the memberships list for developers. Thanks everyone!

Dear Developers, Present: Martin, Jonathan, Marc, Nicco, Tav, Thomas, James Don't forget to vote for your about screen favorite! Developers briefly discussed their favorites. https://inkscape.org/gallery/=artwork/inkscape-13-about-screen-contributor-… The first alpha was released at the weekend. The developer team gave thanks to Marc, René and Maren for their hard work on getting the release out and everyone notified and coordinated. One thing to note is that because of a last minute crash fix (by Martin) the alpha tag is one commit behind the actual released code. We could re-tag it, but we want to avoid force pushing when possible. Martin is making a video to invite people to test the alpha. Hopefully including a demostration of the crash features and how to report a bug to the project. Martin will post a link when it's ready. Jonathan has been working on two things. Guiding the AI importer to help Nicco improve the speed of the parser, with more specific python code. Completing the decoding of how text is stored in the illustrator file format which is complex binary format which isn't documented anywhere so needs careful reading. Text is not on the roadmap for the ai importer currently, but it is ready to be implemented when the time comes. Nicco has been writing more custom parsers for the ai importer and gearing up for the next steps. The contract is aproximately 40% complete and we expect that now the parsing elements are coming to their conclusion that the rest of the implementation will speed up from here. Shapes with properties and colors. Martin wanted to know if there was a testing plan scheduled. Jonathan says there's no specific schedule, but in a aprox. two months they should be ready to open up testing to regular users and hopefully have most of the elements supported. Nicco had a question about translations using weblate. Inkscape tried it in the past and it was too slow. Recommending Nicco talk to Maren and the translator team specifically about what tools they need and their assessment of the weblate and other possible translation technologies since the dev team isn't the right people to ask. Gtk4 vote is waiting on completion. The hiring comittee will meet after the plc meeting and a new mailing list is being created to handle the two job parts. One for internal and one for external. Marc created a mailing list and invited all the prospective partipants in preparation for the comittees meeting. The proctor vote for the elections is going to take another two days, but has three votes in favour so has already passed. Elections should follow after that. GSoC proposals ends tomorrow. We have six proposals but some of them are not eleigable. We looked over several propositions and they will be formally ranked and we will select which ones we want to then push forwards. The GSoC team will meet at 7pm on Thursday to talk about the proposals. PLC review meeting is this weekend, Marc sends his appologies as he will not be able to attend. Tav made an attempt at converting the event controllers for Gtk4 and says he basically failed. The major reason is that this particular controller scheme has not been backported to Gtkmm3, when the C version was attempted it causes issues. This is the biggest bottle neck for Gtk development. He made a sandbox program to text each version https://gitlab.com/Tavmjong/gtk_sandbox/-/tree/master/gtk_event There's a GSoC Gtk4 proposal which can be coordinated with this work and the prospective contracts. Martin has published a blog post with Rafael and himself for the issues fixed in the accelerator program. None were merged, but some tagged and commented on to push them forwards. Reminder: this acivity works by picking the four non-draft oldest updated merge requests. Inkscape 1.3 alpha0 =================== Inkscape 1.3 alpha0 is now available for testing for all three supported operating systems (Linux, macOS, Windows)! Being a pre-release, this version is not intended for production use, but to help us smooth out any issues that should not show up in the actual release this summer. Problem- (P6-Refactoring) Remove dependence on object-set.h in files in src/livarot directory.

Hello, Thank you for considering me to present my suggestions for removing the dependence on object-set.h before submitting my proposal for gsoc 2023. Here are the steps we can follow to remove the dependence on object-set.h: Identify where object-set.h is being used in the code by looking for #include statements and code that directly uses classes or functions defined in the file. Determine the functionality being used from object-set.h to find suitable alternatives. Research and find alternative solutions or libraries that provide similar functionality. Modify the code to use the alternative solution or library, replacing any references to object-set.h and modifying code that uses its classes or functions. Once we have verified the changes, we can commit them and submit them for review. I hope this information is helpful. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.I am not sure about the amount of time required to resolve this issue, so I would appreciate your guidance and suggestions on the matter. Developer Meeting Notes, March 26th 2023

Hi Everyone, This is our first online meeting since the hackfest. Last week's meeting was canceled, so don't worry, you haven't missed any previous notes. Event: https://inkscape.org/cals/event/1/ Present this week: Lazur, Martin, Jonathan, Tav, Thomas, Jabier, NPJ, Marc, Mikekov, Rafael Next Meeting: Monday, April 3rd # Release Plans The alpha release has been uncertain because of reports of deadly crashes on undo. The reports have been a little anecdotal though. The general consesnsus at the meeting is that we should release the alpha right away and then re-release a new alpha if this issue can be confirmed in the latest versions after several fixes. Users can be asked to be brave so long as they understand the risks. Martin created the 1.3 and 1.3-alpha0 release objects on the website and Marc is planning on pushing the alpha out in the next two days. The mushroom about screen was used as the graphic for the alpha. We have a few outstanding merge requests which we can merge immediately. The developer team spent some time looking at these merge requests for our activity at the end of the meeting to clear the backlog for the release. # Jabier Wants to merge some branches, some are minor fixes but need to have better and more descriptions to help reviewers understand what they do, we managed to merge two and attach reviewers to three others. Martin wanted to make sure the corners LPE upgrade is scheduled for after 1.3 since it's quite large. # Jonathan Some reverse engineering of the AI format and helping Nicco putting together the ai importer. Progress is going well, text is likely to be supportable. Asked tav about the mesh gradient and having a number of nodes on the edges of the patches. Gtk4 proposal is ready and waiting to be sent to the PLC. An email got lost and has been resent to Marc and Tav was asked to push the PLC election, nominating the proctor Pono to run the election. # Marc Has been busy and sick, with appologies. # Martin Recovering from travel. Made a video for the hackfest which has been well recieved. Bug accellerator program fixes are submitted and merge request management and pushing for the alpha release. Some website fixes for the about screen contest voting. # MikeKov Looking at a bug #4186 with the new preserve path functionality and trying to work around a fitting alogorythem. We could detect when it's not going to work well and then try a different method, or try to remove the constraints but with bad output. Bug has been assigned and tagged for 1.3. #NPJ Experimenting with Apple archetecture. #Rafael Worked on bugs as part of the accelerator program. Fixed four issues this week, one fix actually fixed two issues. Currently looking into a regression in patterns, where you can't see a marker using a pattern as a context-fill. Pair up with Martin to look into the problem. #Tav Spent a little time in the last week playing with Gtk4, try out the new Gtk List View, it wasn't performing quite as expected. It only generates widgets for things which are on the screen, but this makes the scrolling weird. Made a lsit of 10,000 items, it would scroll for a little bit but then it would jump around. # Thomas Doing some experiments for how to fix menus in macOS, contuing the work from the hackfest to see if there's an upstream patch that can be created. # Team Activity We looked at five merge requests with the Approve Please tag, and merged two, and assigned the rest to reviewers for further testing. Hello people from dev mailing list, My name is Mateus Krause and for a long time I want to contribute with Inkscape. I've been using the program for a few years now and really appreciate the work put into the project. I just found out that Google Summer of Code is open and maybe this could be a good starting point for me to help. Currently, I study Computational Mathematics at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) - Brazil, and I have some knowledge and practical experience in small-medium C++ projects, using Make or C-Make, external libraries, and I think Inkscape would be a good place for me to start contributing in a bigger project with code for the first time. I would really be grateful if someone can help me with my GSoC application. The suggested project ideas that catch my attention are: P9 - Path Library Improvements, I really liked this one because of my mathematics background, and it looks fun; P12 - Customizable Appearance of Canvas Controls, it's a part I interact very often and I really see how this can improve the experience, I also have a background in web dev, so dealing with CSS would not be an issue; P5 - UI-Free Inkscape, this looks interesting because of the challenge managing dependencies. I think I have the knowledge to complete any of this tasks, so at least for me it would be a great opportunity to be familiarized helping in a big community and learn with the experience. For now, I only have gone to the "getting started with Inkscape development" page and did the basics. As part of the application, I'm looking the bug tracker to see what can I complete. Either way, I want to contribute with this project, so any guidance would be awesome. Thanks in advance. -- Mateus Krause

Hackfest notes from Pono

Hey everyone, Here are some notes I took after collecting some questions from people at the Hackfest. After I presented these comments and some of my own thoughts about them, we opened the conversation up to discussion and the bits at the bottom are the resulting conversations. Thanks again for having me, and I'm looking forward to building out the in-person events so everyone can come or participate to the best of their abilities. -Pono ## Things to celebrate about Inkscape and it's community There's a good spirit of volunteering and people taking on tasks that are interesting to them. This goes both ways though and sometimes means there are tasks that get left behind for no one to pick up. Liberal code contribution culture which has enabled lots of innovation and creativity. Receptive to new ideas. People are empowered to express themselves, regardless of their position in the world. People focused project, doesn't require lots of technical expertise and has a low bar to picking up. Mature project with lots of good momentum. People love Inkscape! ## Improvements to be made to Inkscape and it's community Diversity of participants was something that came up a lot. Working to have better outreach to make sure all groups and teams are represented. How can we get younger users and contributors? Make it easier for people to contribute non-code (I'm not sure what the processes around documentation, how-tos, etc work). We need better onboarding docs so we don't have to explain "basics" over and over again. "Inkscape on Twitch" - related to other outreach efforts Spending money... we need to come up with a more formal budget to support all teams and I (pono) think that a budget will make it easier to get money to flow since when things are within an accepted budget, it's easier to get things moving. Listening and communicating with users - surveys, forums, Rocketchat, etc. We need more dialogue with users (technical and non). How are artists, scientists and makers using Inkscape? Formalizing subgroups - with fear of over administering, how do we codify the teams so that they can operate autonomously but be included in all decision making processes? **pono idea - seats for each subteam on the PLC and more communication between groups** How do we get Inkscape in schools? This is something SFC has been thinking about in general ## Hackfest ### Things that went well Relationship building is unmatched in person. This was a great opportunity to meet and chat and the travel being handled if needed, was great. Length was good, maybe a long weekend could get more people. In person communication makes it much easier to clear up miscommunications and intentions. The venue was great and everything was made easy to focus on work and relationships. ### Things to be improved Calling it a 'Hackfest' might've discouraged teams from participating and we *need* all teams to participate. 15-25 people would be a better group. More diversity among participants, *pono let's get some scholarships for new and minority contributors* Open space and loud conversations made it hard to focus, providing quiet spaces would help. More thought into how to include remote participants. Have one with users? Does it have to be this event? More regular cadence makes it easier to get people here. ## SFC - how can we do better and what have we done well being clear about our limits SFC is not just an anonymous thing to help with managing things, we need to establish a more close relationship rewarding volunteers financial help was great and improved attendance Pono/SFC is very helpful for networking between FOSS projects, like introducing the right people and thus increasing the chances of successful collaborations Be a sparring partner for discussing policy & fundamental issues, "outside" person that can help when an outsider is need. E.g. CoC issues within the PLC, election proctor Also to escalate things within SFC if progress is slow. Proposal for accelerating the GTK4 migration

Dear Inkscape developers, the Hackfest in Bensberg has been very productive and one of the outputs is a proposal to accelerate the GTK4 migration, as discussed during the recent development database. For this, we propose to hire two contractors for a span of 4 months, one GTK expert and one Inkscape expert. (Recently, on the PLC mailing list, I mailed around a version of the proposal including only the GTK expert. Feedback there and further discussions here have allowed to combine both into one proposal again.) Please find the proposal attached, including the job postings for both. Draft for a refactoring and improvement of the test suite

Hello inkscapers, I could contribute to the development of the code in my spare time if the following idea makes sense and is of value. While talking in the #irc dev channel and in the last developer meeting, it turned out that the test suite in testfiles directory is somewhat messy and a refactoring could be desirable for some reasons. Here's my proposal. First of all, tests should be grouped in coherent and standard categories. A standard classification is: end to end testing ---> integration testing ---> unit testing This classification, translated into a dir tree would be: ---------------------------------------------------------- testfiles |______end2end_tests | |_______gui_tests | |_______cli_tests | |______integration_tests | |______unit_tests | |______CMakeLists.txt | |______CTestCustom.cmake.in | |______README.md [SUBDIR] gui_tests: empty for now, just add a TODO/FILL-ME note inside it. [SUBDIR] cli_tests: *) rendering tests are made with CLI (as the CMakeLists.txt confirms), so they should be moved inside cli_tests. Therefore, move here svg files from "rendering_tests" and move rendering_tests/test.sh as cli_tests/rendering.sh *) leave here the current content of cli_tests *) add an "images" dir containing all the graphic files [SUBDIR] integration_tests: it will contain cpp or script files in the form: operation1_operation2_..operationN.cpp (or .sh, or .py etc). [SUBDIR] unit_tests: a software unit can be meant both as: 1) (see testfiles/src/curve-test.cpp) a self-referential "concept" 2) (see testfiles/src/uri-test.cpp) as a class, or even a single function, from the API. The important thing is to separate unit tests from integration tests, which are sequences of different tasks. From what I see, the "testfiles/src" dir currently contains unit tests (if cpp files perform integration tests, they should be moved to the testfiles/integration_tests dir) In addition, do move lpe images here (inside an "images" dir). Add a note on the README that lpe stuff is here (as it partially is, actually). [FILE] CMakeLists.txt [FILE] CTestCustom.cmake.in [FILE] README.md: note: only ONE readme will be used for describing this test suite. It will describe what the tests do and how to launch them separately. It will also contain a very short mention - one or two lines - of the model (e2e tests ---> integration tests ---> unit tests) used. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are two possible concrete values/advantages in this new struct: 1) The reordered code would be much more readable, especially in the perspective of finding and running on the fly a specific test for a specific need or in the perspective of adding new ones, or deleting obsolete ones. 2) Integration tests could significantly speed up bug fixing, other than giving a more robust validation procedure of the released software. Let me show an example. An integration test could consist in the same steps described in a submitted bug: open a file ---> modify a curve ---> apply a filter ---> export to png In the integration_tests dir, there could be, together with test files, one (or more than one) file called "integration_test_template.cpp", which is meant as an example, with basic operations done sequentially (open, modify, filter, export etc.). Then, if another example called "integration_test_custom.cpp" is created by the developer (but not added to the source tree and added to .gitignore), it would contain code modeled on the basis of "integration_test_template.cpp" and it would be automatically compiled because as a part of the CMakeLists directives. In this way, we have a ready-to-use environment for testing the API. So, when a nasty bug is described together with its steps, a "integration_test_custom.cpp" file can be created on the fly by using chunks of code taken from "integration_test_template.cpp" in order to replicate the steps. What do you think? And do you think that the integration_tests template would be really useful? In this last case, could you share an example (or more than one) of a bug that can be managed with "integration_test_custom.cpp" so as to have a useful case study? If the idea appears good and collects approval, I can start making a fork and a new branch for it on my local clone.

Developer Meeting March 10th 2023

Hi Everyone, Another week, another developer meeting. Thank you to everyone who responded with enthusiasm for having these notes available. I'm going to see how long I can continue to write them for y'all. Present: Tav, PBS, Martin, Mikekov, Jabier, Paopre, Jonathan, René, Vaibhav # Hackfest The hackfest is in a few days! Most people will arrive early on Monday, two members are arriving late in the evening and will have to book a hotel for the night as there's pretty tight restrictions on arrival at the venue. René will be giving further details about meals and other details, check the wiki for full details. This goes for leaving the venue too. We will be expected to be entirely gone by Friday and 6pm. Several people will be making their way to the city to hang out, or book into their next hotels if they're leaving at a later date. We have a bunch of ideas of things to do during the hackfest. Several people will probably want to conference seperately or hack in their hotel rooms if there's too much activity in the conference room. # Release Alpha, is held up by a few merge requests, we're trying to unclog the delay. - Marc wasn't present, but we have some questions to ask about how the release process is going. - René has everything in thanks to Mikekov - Jabier has two merge requests, we reviewed them. A Drag and drop has been tested but should be defered as it's not high priority. - PBS has a few issues he wants to fix before the alpha is released, One is an async rendering issue with rectangles not being selectable immediately after creation. The other is a missing library on windows called 'libangle' detected by lb90. - Reverting the Undo changes is critical! We looked at a reported crash together in the meeting, but this seems unrelated to the reversion. - The opengl performance on default Gtk on X11 can go down to 1fps with serious issues. It's a problem in Gtk and upstream gives approval for simply forcing gtk to use the image backend renderer. Questions were asked about what was the right course of action. # Other Items - Martin has refactored the export dialog previews to not block on loading large files. Lots of improvements to the export dialog. - The font dialog has a small issue with folders in the font dialog being created, it's creating a system folder when it shouldn't be. - Nico has made good progress with the ai importer this week. He's working about 20 hours a week and progress is steady. - Paopre asked about his proposal to reorganise the test suites so each of the unit tests, integration tests, and others into more formal and defined directories. Advised to document the proposal and present it to the developer team so we can have time to look over it. # Group Activity This week we skipped doing the merge request review and instead did some code review.
