What is the difficulty in adding text decorations, especially underline?

There have been user requests for underline (a text decoration) going back years and years. Since it has not shown up I assume this means that some library Inkscape depends on cannot do this. I checked the most obvious suspects and did not find a definitive smoking gun: 1. Freetype does support underlining (both location and thickness). http://www.cs.sunysb.edu/documentation/freetype-2.1.9/docs/tutorial/step2.h… 2. SVG supports it with "text-decoration:underline". 3 Pango supports it: https://developer.gnome.org/pango/stable/PangoMarkupFormat.html 4. Cairo - not sure. (Maybe this is the guilty party?) So, is there a document somewhere which explains why Inkscape cannot underline? I looked for a while but all Google turned up were lots of threads about how Inkscape does not have underline, but not _why_ it does not. Thanks, David Mathog mathog@...1176... GCC version checking

Further to bug #992124 <RFE: clang support> [1], is there any reason why we still have a hardcoded check for gcc >= 3.0 in the configure script? 1. It prevents easy use of non-gcc compilers (clang) 2. Version 3.0 is archaic, and is presumably available on every platform that could feasibly build Inkscape (i.e., other infrastructure checks in the configure script would fail, so the test is redundant) 3. Why are we specifically looking for version 3.0? If we're wanting to check for a compiler feature, there are more elegant ways of checking for this than just looking for the version number. transform inkscape:original-d into a defs + LPE

Hi, Why original path are stored directly into the shape as an inkscape:original-d attribute rather than in a defs (like path-effect) ? Why is there no "simplify/smooth" LPE ? When you draw line (F6), a smooth factor is applied and a certain shape (ellipse, growing triangle) is used. If you'd like to replay different settings on the same input then you're out of luck : the original output is gone forever because the nodes are already discarded. Some we'll be able to remove the pattern along a path by going into the LPE, most will clik/drag the tool controls and ask why they can't modify settings AFTER the shape has been drawn How to submit a blue print ? filters with background image as source not rendering correctly and lack of support in browsers

Hi, I created a filter that applies a displacement map to the background image to simulate effects like water caustics or the warping you see around fires, but it doesn't render how I want it to. The filter is being applied to the entire bounding box of the path instead of just inside the path. I tried it in Opera, which does support using the background image as a filter source and it shows the same effect. Is this correct behavior? I've attached an example of my problem. It's a star over a checkboard, but you should only see the checkerboard distorted inside the star. Also, could someone comment on why so few browsers (I only know Opera) support the background image as a filter source? To me, it doesn't seem any more complicated than just a regular transparency. GdkEventMotion returning wrong (unexpected) x coordinates

in the file filter-effects-dialog.cpp, I'm trying to get auto scrolling to work horizontally in the connections box of the filter editor dialog (for https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1062134 ). it already works vertically, and you can test this by dragging a connector down (you might want to apply the patch found there after youve verified how this works on your clean branch). however, im trying to get the scrolling to work horizontally too, but it seems that e->x is returning strange values.. strange in that it seems that when i scroll the box, it uses the coordinates of the primitiveList object.. not the actual visible area (ie, the far left edge is not 0 after i scroll to the right).. so to make it scroll i have to drag past where the left corner would be. so to give you an ascii explanation: __________ | | | : [ ] | | | __________ imagine the [ ] is the primitives box, where the scrolling should occur and connections dragging is done. the : is where i have to drag to for the autoscrolling to kick in while dragging a connector if the area is scrolled a bit to the right.. ie, the : represents where the name of the effect would be if it was visible. hope that makes some sense at all the dragging code is in this function: FilterEffectsDialog::PrimitiveList::on_motion_notify_event(GdkEventMotion* e) i can post a patch of what i have so far if necessary thanks in advance -- View this message in context: http://inkscape.13.n6.nabble.com/GdkEventMotion-returning-wrong-unexpected-… Sent from the Inkscape - Dev mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

Hello to all. I release the new version of BSpline + BPower https://code.launchpad.net/~jabiertxof Fix too the problem tell me ~suv and i dont see at start. Previous releases are declared abandoned. The rasons to abandone previous releases are two: 1.- They are backward incompatible, the bspline node difinition is oposite now, think now is too much logical, and now you can increase-decrease the wheight of the bspline. I have a impotant question, when change the wheight of a curve/node its changed "symetricaly" (Move both handles at same), in the way of "Strict" Bspline. The cuestion is: Give the posibility to change independient handles give more control/power/confusion but maybe isnt strict BSplines. You always can press SHIFT key to move handles "symetricaly" like now. ¿Whats the comunity opinion about this? 2.- The code is fully refactored, more organiced and logical. I thick more easy to undertand. Strange Padding

Hi, all: I'm getting a strange, annoying padding around my object, and I can't account for it. When I select the object, it seems that more than the object is selected, because various extensions report the error that "no path is selected." Synthesized font faces.

Pango synthesizes Bold, Italic, and Bold Italic faces when they are not available on the system. Inkscape displays these styles in the UI. I can see a use for the synthesized Italic faces (actually Oblique) but I wonder how useful the synthesized Bold faces really are (it is not a trivial thing to do well). At the moment synthesized Bold faces are listed in the Style menus in the Text toolbar and the Text and Font dialog, and they are displayed in the Text and Font dialog preview area but they are not used on the canvas (probably a difference in how they are displayed, the former uses Pango markup in a Gtk widget while the latter is rendered by Cairo). Question: is it worth trying to get Cairo to render the synthesized Bold faces or should they be removed from the UI. What about the synthesized Italic faces? As an aside, I am struggling to understand how Pango handles font faces... mapping font names to family names and styles. For example, Impact which fc-list reports as Regular or Normal ends up having the style "Condensed"; the synthesized versions don't include "Condensed". Tav

Regarding the bug: I found the piece of code that handles the CMYK values to be scaled as [0,1]. Now making a change to scale values in [0,1]-->[0,100] (though mentioned as a more industry friendly standard) shall require changes to generic codes which also handle the CMS sliders of RGB Color profiles. Also, the interconversions b/w floats of [0,1] to rounded of integers in [0,100] shall cause some loss of accuracy as well. Can people who are more experienced in the designing fields be brought together for poll ? If many people want this change, I am up for tweaking the source file in question. Pardon my audacious attempt of suggesting an idea of taking a vote, but in my respect it does seem important. PS: For the more experienced developers, am I right in thinking that the scaling will cause a loss of accuracy ? Thankyou for the help. --- demicoder

SVG question, pattern references another pattern but adds a solid background.

EMF and WMF formats have BKMODE and BKCOLOR parameters which are applied to patterns. BKMODE is either transparent (no background) or opaque (BKCOLOR is drawn first, then the pattern is drawn over it). The tricky part for importing these formats and converting them to SVG is that the values of BKMODE/BKCOLOR are NOT employed when the pattern is defined, but when it is drawn. Im making a inkskape-devel package writting in rules -- --program-sifix=-devel I finaly compile and run the program as inkscape-devel, the problem is i coulden`t have simultaneus inkscape and inkscape-devel. ¿Any body know how to do it? Arshdeep, Great idea.. using 0-100% rather than 0-1 would be bliss for us old school guys ;-) In general using 2 decimals instead of integers doesn't make that much difference for most CMYK designs. Most of the upper and lower values are not reachable for the press anyway. For instance many digital print machines won't print values lower than 10% and stop at 90% at the default settings used by the print shops. On topic of hexachrome and spot colors. Only the very high end of the print work scale as used in my native country of the Netherlands, spot colors are default for any corporation that wants to be held serious. KPN for instance even tried to patent their colour green some years ago and they will pay the extra layer of ink without blinking. Hexachrome is a pretty basic use in glossy magazines that actually often add another layer of varnish to it as well as spotcolor. Direct to plate with stochastic rastering is not uncommon either. I've got an Uncle running a 6 color Heidelberg with an additional varnish extension who specialises in Art related books in Holland and that is mainly hexachrome. It is not a large market, but highly lucrative and relatively stable, unlike the lower end of printing. I personally have been doing print since 1993 and I've seen it all pass the revue. Holland may be a bit of a exception to the rule, but it has been a leader in print technology since the 1600's when all the forbidden stuff was printed there. Design is an export product as much as taters. If Inkscape would support CMYK natively, rather than having to use workaround with the export so you can check while doing the design it would make it a more useful tool. Late binding puts the responsibility of error correction at the desk of your printer as well and most designers I know want to be able to do that themselves. Using color proofing printers and using screen callibration machines to get the whole design department on the same level. Those are not companies that are scared to spend a buck or what on tools and equipment as they also are paid in due for the use of it. Now sure, Inkscape does not have to pretend to operate on the same level, but if it is possible to support the basics I'd say it should be a consideration. I'd love to be able to do a color seperation in Inkscape in a similar way as I can in Coreldraw for instance, so I could check the output raster of my original Magenta raster with what is actually being printed in the print shop. Currently that is a tad cumbersome. My 2 Feng, Jelle

Hi all, From a designers point of view I would stay away from generated faux font styles as far as possible. There is a reason why not all fonts have these styles that often go beyond the humongous amount of work that needs to be put into creating a font. If a designer really wants to screw up a font creators work, they can use stroke thickness, skew, stretch or even envelopes. But any experienced designer not satisfied with the look of a font will normally find himself exactly that one that fits his desired balance of whitespace and content. It's part of the skill of a designer to find the correct font that supports the design and typography. Font design itself is a work of dedication and skill that has always been beyond me and goes well beyond what normally meets the eye at 14px. Having tools like Fontforge really didn't do font design all that good if I have a look at modern fonts with their horrible flows, kerning, baseline shifts, corrupt edges and what all more. It's often like everyone with a camera being a photographer or everyone that knows how to push buttons in dreamweaver calling themselves web designer. As long as Inkscape doesn't really support CMYK, Hexachrome, Spot colours and the like, it can never be considered a truly professional tool for print. SVG supports named colours that might be used to simulate spot colours, but it is a rather small palette and the SVG standard just doesn't support anything but sRGB really. Pantone will not give a license to Inkscape for free I gather as they make a living on this and a good one. Color support can only be done using Inkscape namespaces with the sRGB equivalent in the style or attributes next to it and is dependent on output devises as well. Would be a hell of a lot of work to figure out even a few color profiles and quite some wasted resources for the one who does that. Maybe some university might be interested in doing that or some very progressive printer with deep pockets? The latter at this moment not available in Europe at least or will be hard to find. It's a massacre at the moment. If I would like to see anything in SVG 2.0 it would be arbitrary color spaces. Some way to define a color and it's sRGB equivalent in XML and link that up to the SVG file, like is being done with @fonts. @colorProfile or so. I convert the colors in Coreldraw from a Inkscape PDF export. The only reason I still use it and am bound to Windows. My 2 Feng, Jelle

Related to bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1060837 How to re-create the scenario being talked about in the bug report. All I get their is A(Alpha) value for my inkscape. The bug mentions the word 'ink'. I am guessing it refers to matching the printed colours and the colors on your monitor, as its a matter under the CMS (Color Management System). As an artist, I haven't worked on very high profile projects such that minor color chnages would make a huge impact so I am totally oblivious to the whole CMS thing. -- demicoder

Help with CubicBezier in a closed Geom::Path::const_iterator

boost incompatibility

Dear all, I have discovered that inkscape 0.47pre4 to 0.48.4 are incompatible with boost versions greater than 1.45.0. The most noticeable symptom is that text is not rendered properly. This is because it is heavily clipped. The effect is similar to that described in the (dismissed) bug 875469. To demonstrate this bug, compile inkscape with boost 1.46.0 or above and run it. Pick the text tool, click anywhere on the canvas and start to enter some text. Only the bottom couple of rows of pixels of each character are displayed. If you convert this text to a path it displays properly. Another way to demonstrate the bug is to take some text and put it on a curved path. As you modify the nodes of the path it is possible to see the text rendered inside a staircase-like set of clip rectangles. This problem affects inkview as well as inkscape. I am compiling with gcc 4.4.7 and configuring it like so: CC="gcc" CXX="c++" CFLAGS="-O3 -fstack-protector-all -march=i486" \ CXXFLAGS="-O3 -fstack-protector-all -march=i486" \ LDFLAGS="-fstack-protector-all" ./configure I have tried different versions of all the dependencies of inkscape, including C compiler, libraries and kernel, and the bug is independent of everything but the version of boost. At this stage I have not tried compiling with a lower optimisation level, so it is possible this bug only comes out of the woodwork with -O3. Equally, it is possible this bug only appears on 32-bit platforms. Yours, Is.

PR for shortcuts

Hi, Since 0.49 is shaping up so well with regards to polishing, I'd like to mention yet another thing. A while ago I discovered that several of our long-time users who have been with us since forever didn't even know that we have one-key shortcuts for tools. I mean, for real. People who do real design with Inkscape and are mostly happy with it were quietly complaining that there were no simpler shortcuts. Imagine my surprise :) Since 0.49 now shows F* based shortcuts, how difficult would it be to patch it to show alternative shortcuts as well, after a "," character? Or would it be too confusing? P.S. I've seen this complaint many times before: people were asking if there was a way to configure Inkscape to use some one-key shortcuts for tools. Alexandre Prokoudine http://libregraphicsworld.org

ruler coordinate system: scaling and offset

Hi, I implemented an idea how to temporarily solve bug #170049 [1] for many users: In short, I added scaling and offset for the ruler display and cursor position status display without affecting any of the internal coordinates. This allows to define an inverted coordinate system and does not need document versioning. However, precision might suffer and units are not saved in svg as they are displayed by the rulers. Unfortunately, almost nobody seems to test this or give any feedback. I would appreciate to hear your opinion or have people test the patch. Hello! My name is Catalin Ramascanu and I am interested in joining Inkscape for this years edition of Google Summer of Code. I am a second year student at the Faculty of Automatics and Computer Science from Bucharest, Romania and I have been using Inkscape for about a month , because currently I am working on a game application for Windows 8.I am really enjoying working with this software and I would really like to make an important contribution to this project. I have read the Inkscape wiki page regarding GSoC 2013 and I am interested in the internal work and performance improvements , specifically the startup time and initialization performance. I have also noticed the slow startup time while working with Inkscape and if it were to be improved , that would be very great. I would like know more information regarding this proposal , why does it take that long to startup and what could the problem be. I am also curios regarding the proposal "Continue C++ification" , could I receive some more information about this idea? I am very familiar with the following programming languages: C , Java , Javascript and can adapt very fast to C++. Thank you very much for your time!

Font-family drop-down menu change.

Hi, I've just checked in code that inserts a list of fonts (and font-fallback lists) that are in a document at the top of the font-family drop-down menu that is in the Text toolbar. The fonts that are in the document are rendered with a blue fill to help distinguish them from the normal list of fonts. If a font is not present on the users system, a red line is drawn on top of the font name. Let me know what you think of this. Tav

Handling deprecated GNOME symbols

Hi All, A while ago I added checks in configure.ac to ensure that deprecated library symbols don't get used. However, this approach is probably *too strict* to be included in a stable release... for example, it will cause build-failures that are not "our fault" when the following conditions occur: * inkscape depends on library-A and library-B * inkscape disables deprecated symbols from library-B * library-A depends on deprecated symbols in library-B. This situation is currently causing build failures on Ubuntu Raring because it provides Glibmm 2.34.1, which depends on newly-deprecated symbols in glib 2.35.7. So... we need to consider our approach. Options: 1. Unconditionally allow all deprecated symbols in all libraries. (i.e., remove all the checks I introduced in configure.ac). This would prevent breakage when new deprecations are introduced... but would potentially mean nightmarish migration tasks in the future (as with the GTK+ 3 migration)! 2. Keep the deprecation checks for all libraries: We'd then need to keep fire-fighting the build breakages in distros. Not a good idea in my opinion! 3. Keep the deprecation checks only for high-level libraries: i.e., Gtkmm depends on gtk+ and glib, so we can guard against using deprecated gtkmm stuff but not the others. 4. Add a configuration flag for developers' use (something like "--enable-strict-build") that introduces the deprecation checks. My preferred option... but would people actually use it? 5. Something else? Any thoughts? AV

Why is this blowing up?

Can somebody tell me what is wrong with this code (fragments shown below). It throws some sort of exception which Inkscape catches when it gets down to (*result).back().append(ls); However, there is no problem doing output.back().append(ls); // output is what result was named in the caller in pathv_to_linear, where "output" was created. It is only a problem when the pathvector has been passed into the second (recursive) function. How to enable LPE currently disabled?

Hello. I would like to include in a build for windows some of the LPEs currently disabled. A part from uncommenting the line 209 of the file "build.xml", do I have to do something else? I would like to enable only some of them according to what a user (druban) on Inkscapeforum (http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=2110#p52318) told me. The list is the following: 1. Angle bisector; 2. Circle by center and radius; 3. Circle by three points (this I think could be replaced by draw from triangle or smthg like that); 4. Lattice deformation; 5. Mirror simmetry; 6. Path length; 7. Tangent to curve; 8. Text label If someone could help me, I will appreciate very much. Debugging a crash on return from graphics open()? call?

Working on putting libUEMF's wmf support into inkscape in branch lp988601. Replicated the emf-inout/emf-print files in /src/extension/internal as wmf-inout/wmf-print, modified these to use WMF pieces instead of EMF, and cleaned up the collisions (some globals had been used originally). Got it all to compile cleanly. Problem is, it is blowing up on the "return doc" from SPDocument * Wmf::open( Inkscape::Extension::Input * /*mod*/, const gchar *uri ) { the "doc" has been created, and near as I can tell it is kosher. At least the SVG text fed in here: SPDocument *doc = SPDocument::createNewDocFromMem(d.outsvg->c_str(), strlen(d.outsvg->c_str()), TRUE); was OK (can be cut/paste into a separate SVG file, and it loads fine). The doc pointer is nonzero. Print statements work all the way down to: std::cout << "DEBUG Wmf::open post myMetaFileProc 3" <<std::endl; return doc; } Tried running it in gdb and after the crash Emergency save activated! Emergency save completed. Inkscape will close now. Launchpad Inkscape Bug Team subscription

Hi, As you may have noticed if your in the Launchpad Inkscape bug team, the flow of notifications has dramatically decreased recently. Instead of sending notifications whatever happens in the reports, the LP bug system limited the notifications to new and closed bug. I first thought it was due to a new LP feature, reset with new default values, but it finally seems it was changed by someone in the Inkscape administrators team. I understand there are too many notifications for developers, but bug managers need everything to appropriately triage the reports. For now, the settings have been reset with the previous values (notify everything, including comments) for the bug team (LP subscription page: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+subscriptions). If needed, we have the possibility to subscribe the Inkscape Developers team to the bug system, with limited notifications (new and closed only, or filter based), or a new specific team if we don't want to reuse the developers team. ScalarUnit text input signalling, need help

hello, I'm working on a customizable ruler coordinate system (see bug #170049: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/170049 ) and struggle with how to correctly use the gui elements in the document properties. I use ScalarUnit as number inputs. Clicking on up and down buttons works, but when entering numbers via keyboard nothing happens. I have not directly used signals but maybe I need to? Android tablet as drawing input

Hey Inkscapers, check this out http://www.gimpusers.com/news/00462-use-android-tablet-as-graphics-tablet-w… A simple use of an android tablet to feed as an extended X input device for drawing in Linux. Needs the X11 driver part to feed the data from the Android device to the X11 system, but from there it should end up working for all apps, including Inkscape. This is overlapping an area I was working at from the other direction, but should be easy for me to hook up to from Inkscape directly. My talk at LCA 2013 is going to be on that input work (using wiimotes, guitars, gamepads, etc.) and once I get to the point of reading in drawing data (in addition to current use as keys and pressure modifiers) using that should be very simple and avoid the need for any X11 drivers. Oh, and from what I see of the protocol, it should end up working cross-platform.

Mac OS X, for reason that evidently were valid when NeXT Step OS was designed, dispatches event to menus at a higher priority than keyboard event processor. So the menu with accelerators "sucks up" the event before it even reaches the GDK (or any other event processor) delegation system. If there are accelerators that overlap with key events , without modifers, they won't be prcessed as regular keyboard events, but as menu accelerator (the 'g' that triggers "Toolgradient" being a good example) . The fix is to modify mac.xml such that all those accelerators that overlap with simple key events are removed. I've done so. I've fixed all cases I was able to find. Let me know if you run into more. b) clipboard exchange with GIMP. The problem is really with GIMP, not Inkscape. Given that GIMP uses the unpatched gtk2+quartz library, it can only import TIFF images from the clipboard. TIFF is not mentioned in the Inkscape Info.plist, thus Inkscape does not export TIFF format to the clipboard. I've modified Info.plist , so now Inkscape and GIMP can talk via TIFF - Inkscape now exports TIFF (among a host of other formats, to the clipboard). Valerio

checkered background rendering mode for transparency?

How hard would this be to draw/implement - even if just for my build ? I'm often making all-white SVG's and wanting to keep the background 100% transparent so that inkscape faithfully renders PNG's would it make sense to include an object attribute that is painted but not rendered like sodipodi:invisible where something like opacity:0 is forced but ignored only by us ? -- Andy

But, shouldn't we use a reference in this case then? To signal clearly that the method does not accept NULL pointers without crashing: void srgb_to_linear( double &c ) { if( c < 0.04045 ) { c /= 12.92; } else { c = pow( (c+0.055)/1.055, 2.4 ); } } I'm trying to reduce the number of crashes due to simple NULL pointer crashes. dxf2svg extension

Hi all Upon crawling through the source code for memory related issues, I noticed some serious issues in the dxf2svg code. Modifying the code (at least in entities2elements.cpp) did not result in recompilation and apparently the code has not been looked after for years (see [1]) and was since long excluded from the building system ([2], [3] and [4]). Is there still some purpose for the code or could we drop the dxf2svg extension code from the source tree? Regards K. I have a new idea to do something in Inkscape that will help the artists a lot. * * *For the same I have been digging into the files:* fill-and-stroke.(cpp+h) paint-selector.(cpp+h) fill-style.(cpp+h) I could figure out all the details of how the FiLL and STROKE dialog box is drawn plus how it interacts with the objects. What I don't get is the code where the changes are actually applied to the selected objects on the canvas(desktop). *Facts I already know:* 1.) in Inkscape, there are two representations of the document being worked on: Object and XML. 2.) Changes in the XML Representation is automatically reflected in GObject Representation but not vice versa. Please help ! -- demicoder

The problem was inside the gtk2 library, and I fixed with this patch: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=692123 GIMP and Darktable would benefit from this patch too. - OSX Menu fully functional with OSX-style mnemonics - uniconverter 1.1.5 + sk1lib 0.9.1, cdr import works great. - ghostscript bundled with the app: importing postscript works great - "open recent" working in Lion release too Problems I see: - the context-menu (right click on object) lack the "Cmd" mnemonic. This is a gtk problem. Mnemonics are correct but gtk lacks the symbol/icon for the Apple/Cmd key. I think it might be better to leave it for the gtk2/quartz team to fix this. Inkscape and clipboard (mac and others)

Re Inkscape clipboard, I believe there are two major problems : 1) General to all platforms, the fact that Inkscape spends time at exit, putting items on the clipboard: I believe that Inkscape current behavior is the correct one. Placing items on the clipboard is an expensive operation. Most operating systems have switched to a "delayed clipboard request fulfilling" model: an app offers items on the clipboard, at the user request, but does not actually pass them to the OS. Only when another app requests the clip, the original app fulfills the request. On exit, if the app owns the promised items on the clipboard, the OS will request to fulfill placement of items on the clipboard, to make them available to other apps. The reason for that behavior is that it makes apps look nicer. If all "copy" requests were to be materialized in the clipboard immediately, the user would have to wait a significant amount of time when he/she presses Cmd-C. It is especially true of Inkscape. Inkscape's cut and past operations are especially expensive, because the have to go through uniconverter. By delaying clipboard requests fulfillment, the user as a better experience: when he requests a paste in another app, the app who own the clipboard item is the the background and can fulfill the request at any speed, without annoying the user. It's a slightly daunting task for me, given that (a) I'm way more comfortable with C/C++ than Python (b) My involvement with the extensions subsystem has been pretty minimal! I'll happily put something together myself, based on the guidance on the Wiki, but if anyone already has any additional useful documentation/slides/tutorial material that they would like to contribute, that would be very helpful, and might even encourage some new contributors to the project :) Thanks! ~suv, thanks as always for your insightful comments. Sorry for the belated reply, I've been busy with work. 99 times out of 100, refactoring is best. However, there are exceptions. Refactoring the menubar machinery in a way that works for all platforms is a major undertaking. It would be a significant investment of time. I think it would be nice to be able to provide a 0.48.4 release to the Mac users out there, who have been left behind for quite some time. I've come up with a solution that is not a hack, but not even refactoring. As a matter of fact, Inkscape has already 80 % of the code needed to work with a unified menubar. Would you, Victor, or any other willing test this version: https://rapidshare.com/files/2954353212/Inkscape-0.48.4-10.7%2B-x86_64.dmg It has a unified MacOSX menu for all windows/document/views. I don't know, however, what the unified menu does to dynamic menu items. Check marks are there and they seem to be ok for me. This version has also a working python installation. Feature request, export a svg to a multi resolution icon

Hello, I created a 512x512 svg image to serve as the "master" logo and icon for poshrunner. I then use inkscape from the command line to make png renderings at 256,128,64,48,32, and 16 pixel square resolution, and then use FreeImage to create a single ICO file that gets embedded into the final ico. Hey all, I took over maintenance of the chocolatey (http://chocolatey.org) package for inkscape. Chocolatey is basically yum/apt-get/fink/etc for windows. I have a request and two offers. My request is that you list the package on the download page. My first offer is that if you deem it appropriate I will make someone on the inkscape core team a co-owner of the package. Patch that allows use of Meta key on Mac OS X and all platforms

I've submitted this patch https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1097539 that activates the Meta (or Apple or Command or Windows Flag) key as modifier key. It allows to have Mac-like menu accelerators (Command-C for copying, Command-V for pasting, etc.) After applying the patch and compiling/packaging, the file share/keys/mac.xml has to be copied as Inkscape.app/Contents/Resources/keys/default.xml The file mac.xml is a copy of default.xml where I brutally found all occurrences of 'Ctrl' and replaced them with 'Meta'. I'm sure it needs a more careful approach. Valerio

I think there might be a somewhat involved solution to the problem of integrating mac osx menus in inkscape. Sure having Inkscape with mac-ish menus would be nice. It entails creating an invisible window with a menu that is managed by OSX-integration. When a menu event is generated, the invisible window delegates the event to the windows that has focus - either via programmatically triggering the window's own - invisible- menu or by directly calling the verb/action. Hi All, New to the list but not to compiling gtk programs on Windows. I decided to try my hand on compiling Inkscape on 64-bit Windows 7 after users of my Gimp builds urged me to look into Inkscape. However, I am running into an issue that is not making sense to me. The compile fails on the ui/dialog part of the tree with a message that giom/dbusmessage.h has an error in it!. I can post the exact error if needed. However, thought this might be familiar to veterans out there and so decided to post. I am using gcc 4.7.2 if that matters. If/once I am successful, I will be happy to put up builds on my website. While Googling for 64-bit builds, I see that there is virtually nothing out there for Inkscape. The SuSE builds are interesting and work. However, the ui is screwy in that you cannot open any files or save them. In other words, no dialog box shows up when you run it. undo: writing to XML during load

Hi all, We have a problem with the LPE-system writing to XML *during* the load process. When loading an SVG with path effects, you can do an undo operation that bugs. Upon loading a file, all effects get recalculated, because of "path_set" being the same for initialization and changes. Can we fix the situation by simply (re-)initializing the undo system *after* a file has been fully loaded? Cheers, Johan

A slight tweak to symbol manager ;-)

Hi all, A thought struck me while working with the symbol manager. As it currently is springtime again, I can't help myself but post this idea here. Launchpad is not often available to me due to timeouts (3 sec reply limit reached due to GFW and NSA), sorry for that. As it now reads <symbol> code and put it neatly into a window, how hard could it be to let it read <glyph> code and put that in a window. I am sure that the font designers would be thrilled with it and using LibreOffice draw to generate SVG fontsets by using its SVG export would open up a plethora of fonts to the Inkscape community. Including all those symbol sets, wingbats, sign language symbols and whatever has been put into ttf, type1 and whatever convertible format. An addition would have to be to limit the amount of glyphs read at one time as I guess that a full traditional Chinese character set of 180.000 characters would be a tad heavy. The basic tools are there though and it can't be that hard to have it read <glyph> rather than <symbol>. Reading the UNC code per 128? incrementally and adding a number under the glyph display would turn it into a pretty sophisticated tool for font developers and designers alike. Cheers, Jelle P.S. Official status of 0.49 & future dev cycles

Hey All, I want to try something different with this dev cycle based on feedback that has been received as well as it being our least predictable cycle thus far. First, I want to thaw trunk to a degree. New features are allowed if they really appear to be "complete"... this means no committing anything that is known to not be fully implemented, introduce regressions, or otherwise has known issues. On top of that, if the author of said feature does not have time to polish/bugfix within a month based on feedback, it's just not the right time to merge it. Once we are clearly moving forward toward a release, at that time I will propose a freeze. Once all blocker bugs are closed out a release branch will be made. At that point is when string freeze will officially set in on that release branch. 6 wonderful weeks of further bug fixes and translating will then take place. Yes, it seems like the release is "just sitting there" while getting wrapped up, but one benefit is a planned period to get test builds out in the wild so we can possibly get an even more stable new release out. Regular users always catch our oversights, so the more of them with their hands dirty helps save us some potential bug tracker grief. Hopefully some other great new stuff has the potential to land in 0.49 now. It's a shame for development to not still charge ahead if people's work is far along enough. We'll see how this works out this time and if appropriate perhaps do the same again in future releases. I will let everyone know when it looks like we should actually go back into feature, but from where I sit, I don't foresee that being too soon. As usual, any questions, comments, or feedback are welcome. TL;DR: We're mostly thawed, but commit quality matters more than usual. An update will be posted when it's merited. Cheers, Josh

Color of an object.

In my experiments with the code, I need some basic information on how an object is assigned its color parameters. Consider the following steps: 1. Draw a circle. Fill it with red color. 2. Draw a rectangle. Fill it with green. (both are solid colors right now) What would be happening in the memory/inkscape process ? a.) Will the inkscape process update the svg document side-by-side which will contain some style information ? OR b.) Is a linked list of objects updated in the memory which shall store the color properties for the circle and rectangle objects (along with other related parameters ofcourse, like stroke, style, etc.)? If you can give an idea on what files in the code handle these aforementioned steps, it will be great. The wiki's section on InkscapeColor does not help at all. I suppose the above question points to a more generic question ! " How are objects handled in Inkscape (while drawing) ?" Are they objects in the memory ? Perhaps grouping them just groups those objects under a group in a linked list or something like that ? Looking for quick answers. Thankyou. -- demicoder

Compiling on Windows 7

Hello all, Thanks for the help. This email is just a gist of what I faced. The latest build 11962 builds just fine with devlibs r41 but not on TDM GCC 4.7.1. I faced a similar problem in getting the code to compile a few months back in August, when mathog found out that inkscape did not compile successfully using TDM GCC. He suggested Vanilla MinGW, which is the one I am using right now, and inkscape just builds fine. So anyone wanting to develop on Windows shall need: Vanilla MinGW as of now. (Personally I haven't tested the previous versions of TDM GCC, although Uwe Scholer has reported successfully building on Windows 7 using TDM GCC 4.6.1 :) ) For other components refer the Inkscape Wiki: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Compiling_Inkscape_on_Windows I would like this information to be updated on the Inkscape Wiki. It shall help the beginners and save them time. Trust me, being new to OSD, and not being able to compile for days on end when you are following the instructions meticulously is demotivating. PS: TDM GCC 4.7.x (the latest) builds the code completely but inkscape.exe does not run. After the sandtimer cursor, nothing happens. -- demicoder

Hello, I update the SpiroLive branch to redraw spiro when mouse stop, no gaps now. In my 5 years old computer -debian- spiro redraw ok, now better whith the tolerance fix. If isn't enoft we can increase the tolerance level. Less tolerance show more fluid spiros, more tolerance spiro curve "jumps" more. I dont want to add a botton to show optionaly, because i think this function is basic while drawing, but if we decide to make optional y start whith this. Any more betatester ;) ?

Hi guys, I'm trying to find a good python library to access the SVG DOM, similar to the way Javascript does it. Is there any lib around that you can recommend for that? pySVG, SVGwrite, pyjs is what I managed to find references to. pyjs seems to me to be the most complete. But I would figure that Inkscape does access the SVG DOM to manipulate objects as well? Am I missing something here? Cheers, Jelle P.S. Symbols Symbols are made using lines rather than outlines. Though I can understand why to do it that way (smaller size), it leads to problems when converting them to groups as lines will inherit not the settings from the symbol, but from the current line settings. I think all symbols should be created in outlines, similar to fonts, to prevent problems. I guess engravers will like it that way better as well, but not sure about that. I'm not sure if the symbol to group setting is supposed to behave like that either. Seems illogical to me. Fill bounded area's Is broken

Hello all, First of all, a very congrats to everyone for the new release. :). :D My inkscape trunk (revno 11962) does not compile with the latest devlibs. I faced a similar problem 2 months ago, there was some problem with devlibs' recent upgradation that was causing the trouble. I am working on Windows 7.
