filter effect input and premultiplied alpha

Hi all, Playing with feDisplacement map, and reading the code, I noticed filter effects recieve premultiplied images as input. I would expect non premultiplied images at least for filters that make explicit use of the color channels (like displacement map)... Is this the expected behaviour in svg? If not, I think the issue should be fixed before 0.46, since all art work based on this would be modified if we change this... jfb.

CRASH: Save As extension scripts

I spent a few moments trying to update and fix the XCF and ZIP output extensions. I believe the XCF extension functions correctly because I can intercept the temporary file and it is an appropriately layered XCF. Inkscape, however, crashes. Is the appropriate method still to hand back the converted file on STDOUT? Ted, do you have any ideas? Backtraces follow. new dependence require unstable glib version

The SVN revsion 17317 introduced dependence to unstable glib release <http://inkscape.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/inkscape/inkscape/trunk/src/xml/…> The glib/gtestutils.h file is on glib-2.15 dev versions, but not on last 2.14 stables version. Some test could be added in the source to avoid such dependence until glib-2.16 go out. After discussions on IRC, looks like this is to use the g_assert function.

Creating guidelines from objects

Hi, I just committed a change to SVN (rev. #17022) which allows the user to convert rectangles and 3D boxes to a collection of guidelines that are aligned along these objects' edges. Originally, this was a stab at something in the direction of RFE #172136 (in particular, it was only meant to work for 3D boxes). But since I'm not familiar yet with grid infrastructure I thought that instead of a grid it would be easier to create a couple of guidelines from a box, which can then be used as a basis for 3D based drawings. Not as functional as a 3D box based grid but better than nothing. Then it occurred to me that it may be even more useful to convert *rectangles* to guides because in this way it becomes much easier to create guidelines in specified positions/constellations (imagine applying it to rotated or skewed rectangles). So I implemented this as well and added an additional menu entry "Object->Objects to guides" which allows conversion to guidlines of any rects or 3D boxes in the current selection. Now I have some questions. 1) I'm not sure if this kind of change should occur during Frost phase (I couldn't ask for an exception before because I hadn't thought of it at that time). But since IMHO it's an extremely useful yet very lightweight change - even if a couple of files were adapted - and I don't see any way in which this can possibly break things, I committed it anyway. If it is not desired and should be held back until after 0.46, please feel free to revert it. 2) Originally I added a button to the 3D box toolbar which allowed conversion of selected boxes to guides. After providing this option for rects, I also added this button to the rect toolbar, but then I thought it might also make sense in (at least) Selector tool, so I decided not to clutter the toolbars and removed the buttons altogether in favor of the menu entry. Do you think there is any value for such buttons? 3) I added the keyboard shortcut 'Shift+G' for conversion to guides in Rect, 3D Box and Selector tools. Do you think this is appropriate (I personally find it very handy to have a quickly accessible shortcut in these tools) or should there rather be a global shortcut associated with the corresponding verb? What would be an appropriate one? Thanks, Max P.S.: Release Notes will be updated in case this change is accepted for 0.46. They have been silent for a little while though, so you may need to be patient to get an answer. However, developing on OS X is quite straightforward and very similar to the process on Linux (we don't use XCode or any other OS X specific environment, so you only need a text editor, a terminal, gcc and make). Once you get Inkscape to compile as per these instructions: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/CompilingMacOsX you're ready to go (I advise you to remove the option --enable-osxapp at configure time and just keep Inkscape as a plain command line app, which is easier to debug and run with special options). Then, to know more about Inkscape internals, development practices or what's on the wish list, subscribe to the devel mailing list and hang out on the IRC channel, you'll find plenty of clever people there. It's release time right now so focus is on bug fixes and major development has to happen in branches. You can use a SVN branch or use git locally (via git-svn) and prepare your patches with it. Feature missing from Roadmap

Correct me if I'm wrong, but skimming the roadmap I was unable to find any reference to work on a swatch palette for named colors, grdients and patterns. I'm talking about a single dialog where the user can create named colors which would later be referenced by name in the XML (I don't know if SVG allows it) - for example, suppose I create buttons and other graphic elements for a website design. I have many of them and they are differently shaped. I might want to paint them with a blue color. I then create a new swatch, name it "buttonBackground" and set all the background rectangles to use it. Later, I may want to change the entire color scheme of the website - in this case all I need to do is just access that swatch and change its value to, say, red - and all The button backgrounds immediately update. I feel this is a very basic, important feature missing from Inkscape. I know from experience I use this extensively on other applications, and even on Inkscape I try to fake this feature by creating gradients with two identical colors and sharing them between shapes (but it's awkward and the gradients can't be named and are hard to find among the long list of used gradients in a large document).

PDF Export (Cairo) stress testing

Hi all, first I need to say that the Cairo PDF export is A W E S O M E !!! (now prepare for some nagging... ;) For some weeks I was working on a bigger project (0.5 x 3 in meters ;) and it was quite an adventure to print it out... Inkscape 0.44 export didn't work for me, as I wanted pictures and transparency. So I compiled rev. 17189 from SVN on gentoo. (Sa, 26 Jan 2008) To verify, use the SVGs in http://home.arcor.de/caliga/timeline.zip Exporting without text-to-curves the result is: - Console: (inkscape:5847): WARNING **: Parameter <blurToBitmap> might not exists 9354,330078 1275,590576 - PDF-Output: about 1kb in size, therefore not completed... one time I got: (inkscape:5847): CRITICAL **: SPObject* sp_object_unref(SPObject*, SPObject*): assertion `object != NULL' failed Exporting with text-to-path: Well, today I could not reproduce it, but after a long time of swapping I saw messages similar to "Warning! Allocating large amount of memory. Possible memory leak." today it just said "Killed" after swapping arround for a while. (unfortunately I had to this on my old 512mb machine as my Laptop broke...) I actually got a working PDF from the smaller version (Zeitstrahl 18.svg). Hey, I thought this is just vectors? How does size matter? Well, I suspect that the "preferred DPI" option plays a part here. However, I needed the xxl version, with a lots of DPI ;). So I went to my friend with the big (!) printer (plotter) and installed Inkscape 0.46-pre0 (win). Direct printing didn't work, so we tried to create a PDF there. Without text-to-path we got an error message. With text-to-path it worked for "Zeitstrahl 19 xxl single.svg", but not for the double version. I think we had set "preferred DPI" to 150. However, later my friend told me that he *could* create a PDF from the double version... Summary: Well... if you please, it would be nice if Inkscape could create a Cairo-PDF from Files like "Zeitstrahl 19 xxl double.svg" with any combination of options set, on a 500MB machine, in no time ;) Thanks :) Daniel P.S.: Another way of stressing Inkscape quite a bit (at least with 500MB RAM), is to select all objects of one timeline (in xxl double) and trying to group them. (Didn't work for me...)

Hello, my name is Davide i come from italy, some of you already know me, i suppose, i started introducing my work in the inkscape's user list. I've made a web-site, that is called inkscape gallery, it is meant as a meeting point for the inkscape's user community where to post and show inkscape made drawing and where to talk about inkscape and open-source software in general. I used drupal and i've just realized that inkscape.org is being rebuilt on the same powerful and open-source cms... You may found a brief presentation in a pdf here: http://test.inkscapegallery.net/files/inkscapegallery.pdf It is a full featured social network web site, with many features that i'm going to introduce: * Bilingual content and interface, english and italian * images upload showing them in 6 sizes * Svg upload * user pictures * voting on images * service links (stumbleupon, digg, delicious etc...etc...) * free tagging and tag cloud * 4 roles registration to the website * user profile * user gallery * user block like "user's images" * newsletter * license release * advanced search to look for licensed drawing or user images * two forums (italian and english) * random gallery * slideshow surfing * tutorial section * link to sourceforge for inkscape download * link to inkscape.org and many others... The inkscape gallery layout is entirely made with inkscape. Now you may ask, why did you do this? Cause i started using inkscape from the beginning, i've never used other vector graphic software, then graphics became a work and i'm still using inkscape. Now i have a small company, it's called nois3lab (http://nois3lab.it ...but it is in italian only and we're now upgrading it) and i'm trying to achieve the purpose of a graphic and web-design agency (not only, we also work on customizing linux distros for companies and administration, for example) working with free and open-source software exclusively. So, i started looking around to find inkscape resources and it seemed something was missing. A place, expecially made for inkscape, where to share our drawing, to share our thoughts, a place where to go to see how great inkscape is. I've found many resources on inkscape.org and i know there's a gallery section too, but i wanted to make a gallery web site where to spend time viewing beautiful images in their own context. in the previous weeks i was trying to make it well known in the community before releasing officially, it is at http://test.inkscapegallery.net, right now. Now i think it's ready, we're going to pre-release it on day 11 of february and it will be at http://www.inskcapegallery.net. What it seems interesting to me, as well as the project itself is the chance to make inkscape.org and inkscape gallery work together, cause both are meant to spread the inkscape knowledge and use. We have many ideas about this, and maybe we can share them in the next days. But, for now, i also wanted to announce that we are working on a plugin for inkscape to publish on inkscape gallery directly from inkscape. We know that there's the jayeshsalvi's work on alt canvas and i hope he's reading me, cause we didn't decide what to do at the moment. We could use that plugin and extend it to support inkscape gallery or write another one, independent plugin. But it has to be cross-platform; linux , windows and mac too. grids, guides, snapping UI

Hi guys, overall you did a terrific job on these features, but I have several comments/questions on the UI: Doc prefs: - "snap guides while dragging" option does not seem to work - no snapping to grid, other guides or objects - can we disable the remove button when there's nothing to remove in Grids? - can we give grid names that at least reflect their type, e.g. AxGrid2222 or RectGrid2222 instead of grid2222? - why two checkboxes, "enabled" and "visible"? what's the difference? It's not clear. I propose to rename them to "Snapping enabled" and "Grid visible". Also if I uncheck "enabled", visible does not work - why? if that's intentional, please just gray out the rest of the grid options when "enabled" is unchecked. - why there's no option for hex grid to show dots? - Snap tab: for what snaps/nodes, the tooltip lists what they may snap to, but here, more important is another question - what are nodes? only path nodes, or special points in shapes? what about gradient handles and text baselines - are they "nodes" too? I think this needs to be clarified right here. What they snap to is clear from the rest of options below. - same about what snaps/bboxes: what they snap _to_ is not important here, it's clear from the rest of options anyway, but that it only works in selector is important. Oops, no, wait; I just noticed that bboxes don't snap to paths/nodes, and nodes don't snap to bboxes. In that case this should be mentioned in the tooltips of course (e.g. "snap to bounding boxes of other objects but not to their paths" and vice versa). - "Snap at specified distance" is misleading; better something like "Snaps only when closer than:" - "Miscellaneous" is a bad label - doesn't this option belong in "what snaps"? Maybe as a suboption under "nodes" - am I right in assuming the rotation center is considered a "node" for snapping? - in any case, "Also snap the rotation center of an object when snapping nodes or guides" - why are guides mentioned here? how can I snap rotation center of a guide? - finally, I think we should rearrange the tabs again :) Tooltips that include "see previous tab" are a sign that something is very awkward here. As I understand the options, I would propose dividing them as follows: first tab: "Snapping" - enable snapping - what snaps, including the rotation center option second tab: "Snap targets" - snap to guides - snap to grids - snap to objects - snap to intersections (in this order!) feDisplacementmap fix

Hi all! Atm, feDisplacementmap output depends on zoom factor (see here<https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/182059> ). I had a look at the code to try to fix this, but I need someone to validate the code. Precise meaning of area, unit transforms, and particulraily of the function "enlarge_area" are not perfectly clear to me. The modifs are all in nr-filter-displacement-map.cpp.<http://launchpadlibrarian.net/11804938/nr-filter-displacement-map.cpp> I just changed "scale" with "scalex" and "scaley" defined as: Matrix trans = units.get_matrix_primitiveunits2pb(); double scalex = scale*trans.expansionX(); double scaley = scale*trans.expansionY(); where apparently appropriate (in the render() and enlarge_area() methods), but I would feel more confortable if someone having a better understanding of the code could check if this is correct or if other changes are needed elsewhere... improving a bit more the feImage filter

this is my updated patch for hadling svgelements referenced by id on the feImage filter primitive. It is not working yet but is much better than the previous patch I sent to the list. Now the URIReference is properly handled and a NRArena/NRArenaItem created. Then I create a pibblock and render the svg element in it. When I call the nr_arena_item_invoke_render method I get this error: ** (inkscape:6874): WARNING **: rendering element File display/nr-arena-item.cpp line 308 (?): Assertion item->state & NR_ARENA_ITEM_STATE_BBOX failed I dont know how to get rid of this one. I am going to travel now and will be back only next week. If anybody wants to give it a try, this patch needs a last touch to get working. (it also adds an extra button to the feImage settings UI: to use an element instead of an image, you must select the desired element and then click on the "SVG Element" button) best wishes, Juca

Hi, Hum, Johan is right. I did not consider this as a new feature, but I was wrong. Sorry--- still learning! :-( I think it is definitely worth thinking about it: the point is that pattern-along-path loose a lot of usability if the offset parameters are not there (at least the 'space' added between copies): several people asked me about the old python script, just to have this functionality (that is what made me think of this as a kind of bug...). For instance, in many (most?) cases (foot prints, stars, any shape...), you don't want the copies of the pattern to touch each other. Moreover, the work arround are not easy... Making the dimensions proportional or not to the size of the object is codewise straightfoward, but Johan is right stressing that the right decisions have to be made here. This requires some time to think about it, and might be worth postponing to 0.47. On the other hand, it would be a pitty to release lpe pattern-along-path without it... I am just not experienced at all in such big projects as inkscape, and I'll devoutly follow guru's advices! In particular, I'll perfectly agree if we decide to remove this. JF.

Filter effects UI

Hi There are a couple of issues with filter effects UI, that I'm concerned about in the upcoming release. First, at some point of development, the blur slider was disabled when there was a more complex filter attached to the object. I believe that this is a good thing, because it's not too clear, what it should do. Nevertheless, right now it causes a crash. I haven't dwelved much into this problem and there may be some bigger underlying problem, that needs fixing. But unless there's a plan on how this slider should work with complex filter already attached to the object, I believe it should be disabled in those cases. (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/186281 ) Second is a problem I fully realized only today: there's no user interface for setting enable-background property. Without this, the only working input images are Source Graphic and Source Alpha. Background Image and Background Alpha only contain data, when there's property 'enable-background:new' set on some parent object of the filtered object. Without this, they will just appear to not work. pattern-along-path LPE recent additions

Hi all, Recently, JF added support of some more of path-along-path extension's parameter in the pattern-along-path LPE. (spacing, and offset parameters) I am not too certain that this change is good so close to release. Especially I am concerned with ambiguity or "wrong" calculation of parameter values. Could someone please have a (somewhat thorough!) look at what the new parameter values mean and that the resulting path is consistent with that meaning? What happens for example, when scaling the original path? I really think the meaning of their values should depend on the "scale width in units of length" checkbox. It is easy to revert (the svn revision changed only one file and reverting it does not break compilation), so we can postpone the decision _a bit_. Thanks a lot, Johan

Linux dev. binaries?

Is there a source of current SVN binaries for linux of which I'm not aware? Seems to me a large base of possible testers are being lost by not having these available - I know everyone's hard at work on good stuff, but is there anyone who could re-start the autopackage builds so linux inkscape users can test and report bugs? I just grabbed my early Jan. build to do some work, ran into a real doozy of a bug... couldn't find it on launchpad... figure it must be fixed in SVN... took me quite some time to make an SVN compile (most people wouldn't bother), and of course the bug's gone, great. Had I not spent all that time on an SVN compile my choices would have been either report a bug that's gone, or not report anything at all. Cheers -Terry

OK, I did a little research and there's no wonder you never heard of it: it is a mac specific thing. To get a brief overview of font management on OS X (which I've always thought to be very well designed) you can skim over this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25251 http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn/tn2024.html The Font Suitcase thing is a format dating back from OS 9 (the original Macintosh system, before it was unixified). This is a weird format, in which the whole font is stored in the resource fork and nothing is stored in the data fork. As a result the file appears to be 0 bytes: $ ll Curlz\ MT -rwxrwxr-x@ 1 root admin 0 Apr 7 2004 Curlz MT nor do they have a file extension. The font information however is just regular true type. OS X (i.e. the unixified version) does not ship with these fonts now (I'm not even sure it ever shipped with some) but supports them for backward- compatibility's sake. The only app I know that ships with such fonts is.... you guessed it: MICROSOFT Office. Well you can't ask them to be good players on a platform which is competing with them, for sure. I don't expect support to appear in Pango anytime soon since the format is deprecated. Anyway, it seems perfectly safe to convert those to regular TTF, no information is lost: it just moves it from the resource fork to the data fork. It just means each user has to do it. PS: I would be curious to know which format Office 2008 uses for its font on OS X. Does someone have info on this? PPS: you may see some work on font suitcases in Pango, but this is not (AFAIK) related to this particular format. It is probably related to the new font suitcase format introduced with OS X, which has the dfont extension and is kind of the contrary: everything is in the data fork and the resource fork is empty of font information. This makes working with this format easier. But it is at the same time quite new so support is not yet perfect. OT: OOXML Dispositions

Hi all, Sorry for the OT post but I guess some of you might be interested in supporting Open Standards for document formats... As most of you will probably be aware by now, the ISO Ballot Resolution Meeting for Microsoft's appalling document specification (OOXML, ECMA-376 or DIS29500) is happening at the end of this month. We are actively involved in helping the National Bodies (NBs), that will decide if it should become an ISO standard or not, to dissect and analyse the thousands of comments (3522) and the 2000+ pages of Dispositions which ECMA have produced in response. The site for this work is http://www.dis29500.org I would appreciate it if you could forward this to all interested parties. Especially those of a technical nature who would be able to comprehend and make sense of the dispositions which ECMA have produced. There are 3522 comments (many of which are duplicates). The responses from ECMA (dispositions) are now also present on this site and can be examined and commented on. The objective is to "tag" the dispositions so that the NBs can focus on those areas of the proposed specification that are real problems or are simply unworkable as part of an International Standard. We already have ODF and do not really need another one. It is in everyone's interest to help the NBs to come to the right conclusion after the forthcoming BRM... Failure to load image in non-interactive mode.

Hi, The Image filter works for external images interactively but fails when the command line is used to convert an svg file to a png file. It fails with the following error messages: (inkscape:26505): glibmm-CRITICAL **: Glib::ObjectBase*<unnamed>::create_new_wrapper(GObject*): assertion `wrap_func_table != 0' failed (inkscape:26505): glibmm-WARNING **: failed to wrap type of 'GdkPixbuf' The line in nr-filter-image.ccp that is generating the error message is: image = Gdk::Pixbuf::create_from_file(fullname); It doesn't throw a Glib::FileError or a Gdk::PixbufError. Does anybody have a clue as to what difference between running interactively and using the command line could be the source of this problem? Tav

Windows Inkscape icon is Crunched

I just installed the Inkscape beta, and I notice a slight problem with the application icon. Notice in the attached screenshot of the start menu, that this 32x32 icon is aliased - I suspect because it's using a 48x48 icon. When was the icon changed, and why? Apart from the aliasing, I can't see any difference in design. Joel

Making more documentation faster with wiki

The documentation is actually 100% docbook based. Docbook are converted to SVG for integrated tutorials if I'm not wrong. The problem is docbook is not the easiest way to make a doc for everyone, and there are lot of people that are not developers and would like to help for some other tasks (as we see lot of good free tutorials around the web and translator in lot of languages). Actually the manuals are here in Inkscape SVN, there is an English and a French beginning of doc : http://inkscape.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/inkscape/user_manual/trunk/xml/ The doc didn't move since one month, Elisa-Yemanja (that already amade a paper book manual on Inkscape) contributed in French version 2 weeks ago, but think this is too long process to manage docbook. I think it will be better to use a well defined wiki for manual, as lot of contributors could participate easly as wikimedia projects and some other projects shown. There are already started wikibooks for inkscape on wikibooks.org. I believe there are 2 conditions for this project to be used: * A well defined zone for the wikimanual doc (like doc.inkscape.org, manual.inkscape.org or inkscape.org/doc), actually user have to dig in wiki to find part of user information. * Tools to convert automatically this wiki to docbook. I then searched tools to convert from wiki to docbook and from docbook to wiki, and there are several ones: to integrate docbook to wiki (and don't restart the whole documantation) there are scripts made by blender.org (or at least referenced on there wiki) in perl and python : http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Meta/DocBook_to_Wiki mediawiki project itself contain a php wiki2docbook, available in the mediawiki svn (and archive, I suppose): http://tools.wikimedia.de/~magnus/wiki2xml/w2x.php Example of conversion to odt et pdf are nice they even contain link to other pages of the manual on the de.wikipedia.org used as example: http://www.nabble.com/Wiki-Konverter-to3627646.html I suppose we could output to SVG from docbook and change to local disk pages or other site obtaining then a full doc separated distribution (as there is gimp + gimp-doc, python + python-doc, ruby + ruby-doc, ...) or choose to make links to generated svg doc on inkscape site or both, to have well done manual for users with interactive features as actual tutorials. I think tutorial is good as is light, allowing a quicktour to Inkscape, the doc should be another documentation separated from inkscape itself, at least in a first time. While it does not solve the underlying problem, it may ease the font conversion: I've finally put up a small app based on a script of mine which did this. Drop one or several font files on it and it will convert all of them to TTF, in the same directory. http://jo.irisson.free.fr/dropbox/Font2TTF.zip It uses Fondu[1] to convert Font Suitcases (wether they are dfont or the old Font suitcase format) and FontForge[2] for other types (otf, pfb currently). Fondu is included for 10.5 users (on Intel but I guess there are few 10.5 users on PPC). Fontforge needs to be installed (either via the link below or through MacPorts/Fink. I used MacPorts, it works fine). WARNINGS: - this may just-not-workTM - it overwrites ttf fonts of the same name already present (this is to allow to reconvert fonts if you already did it, without having to manually deleting all of them). - this duplicates the fonts already present on the system. FontBook will put a dot next to their name. You'll probably need to deactivate a version so that OS X behaves sensibly. - if you convert system fonts, you'll not be able to deactivate them, hence you'll need to live with the duplicates - duplicated font can cause rendering problems on Firefox (last time I tried anyway) ADVICE: - copy (not move, copy. this is achieved by holding down the Alt key when dropping the files) the fonts from your libraries (/Library/ Font, /Users/yourname/Library/Font) to somewhere (a folder on your desktop is fine), then select the fonts in this new location and convert them there, eventually select all the newly created TTFs and put them back in a font library folder (or double click each of them to install them) - if you want these TTF versions to be available to X11 apps only and to continue to use the rest idependently, move them to an X11 only location. ~/.fonts for example (the .fonts folder in your home directory). Do to this, in Terminal: mkdir ~/.fonts cd the-folder-where-your-ttf-fonts-are mv *.ttf ~/.fonts - manually rebuild the font cache, just to be sure. In Terminal: sudo fc-cache Let me know if it works/helps/screws everything up. Apparently the current inkscape code does something like: width = 7; height = 7; data = malloc (width * height); The problem would then come in trying to use this data as a cairo image surface: stride = 7; surface = cairo_image_surface_create_for_data (data, CAIRO_FORMAT_A8, width, height, stride); In previous releases of cairo, using a stride value like this that is not a multiple of 4 would cause cairo to draw total garbage. Instead, now, as of cairo 1.5.8, the above would result in an error surface with a status of CAIRO_STATUS_INVALID_STRIDE. The fixed could would instead look like this: width = 7; height = 7; stride = cairo_format_stride_for_width (CAIRO_FORMAT_A8, width); data = malloc (stride * width); surface = cairo_image_surface_create_for_data (data, CAIRO_FORMAT_A8, width, height, stride); Here, the cairo_format_stride_for_width call takes care of any necessary alignment, (which in the current version would return a value of 8 for the stride). Obviously, that much of a change is trivial. Beyond that, we'll need to then fixup as much inkscape code as necessary so that all of inkscape's own rendering code properly accounts for the stride not being identical to the width. Make sense? Again, I'm glad to help out with this. Just let me know what I can do. -Carl

New sp-object question

This allows the user to drop a serial number on the doc and define the start number, increment, and number of numbers and then the downstream imposition software takes over from there. As I looked at this I started to wonder if one of the problems is that this will introduce a non-standard SVG element. Filter Rendering issue

Since we're getting read for full freeze here I figured I'd bring up a bug that I confirmed last night that seems like it should potentially be a blocker imho. There is an example file showing the rendering issue with a few different filters. It appears to be another filter & transformation issue. Inkscape native Mac OS X build & look improvements

Hello, I've recently switched for good to MacOSX (after several years of work with Windows). I'm user and fan Inkscape. On Windows there was pretty well working native build, while it is missing on MacOSX (X11 build is pretty slow and not handy) So I've decided to make it myself and now share my experience with you. Attached the screenshot of my running native OSX (Leopard) version of Inkscape (no, it's not a fake ! ;P) I've used the recipe from http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/CompilingMacOsX with MacPorts. Here are my changes to original MacPorts recipe: 1) I've updated to latest GTK+2 using: (you need to do the same or Inkscape will be crashing every few seconds) port edit gtk2 version 2.12.5 checksums md5 588c7fb3d9ebadf4f5a1ab4c534e4db5 port install gtk2 +quartz 2) I've downgraded boehmgc to 6.8 (latest 7.0 causes Inkscape to hang (never ending loop) on startup) port edit boehmgc version 6.8 distname ${d_name}${version} checksums sha1 6d5def5ba5d29292ba9c76f04df3ec06d3ab3278 3) Applied my own-cooked patch Inkscape_OSX_native_menu_and_toolbars.patch (attached) * src/widgets/toolbox.cpp: removes tb_s, tb_e spacers from the toolbars to they DON'T have ugly underlines (who did invent this anyway, this produces ugly look in most GTK themes where toolbars are 2x inset in the GUI, I believe this should be removed anyway in all builds (platforms)) * src/ige-mac-menu.[c/h]: sources for native Carbon Mac top menu wrapper instead of having the menu inside the window (taken from GIMP sources) * src/interface.cpp: use ige_mac_menu_set_menu_bar on native GTK (Quartz) for menu and return NULL so no menu is displayed in the Window itself * configure.ac: add Carbon checking and libs define required ige-mac- menu * src/Makefile_insert: add Carbon libs and ige-mac-menu sources * removes packaging/macosx/Resources/themes/Clearlooks-Quicksilver- OSX: we should take Leopardish-normal theme instead from: http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Leopardish?content=65299 which is far more adequate for GTK looking like OSX 4) then normally built with packaging/macosx/osx-build.sh a c b i p 5) fixed Inkscape.app so it is displayed as single Launch bar icon named "Inkscape" by: * removing Contents/Resources/getdisplay.sh & Contents/Resources/ inkscape (we don't need those in native !) * renaming Contents/Resources/inkscape-bin to Contents/Resources/ Inkscape * replacing Contents/MacOS/Inkscape with simple shell script that sets cwd to Inkscape.app and runs Contents/Resources/bin/Inkscape: > #!/bin/sh > PRG="$0" > while [ -h "$PRG" ] ; do > ls=`ls -ld "$PRG"` > link=`expr "$ls" : '.*-> $.*$$'` > if expr "$link" : '/.*' > /dev/null; then > PRG="$link" > else > PRG=`dirname "$PRG"`"/$link" > fi > done > DIR="`dirname $PRG`" > cd $DIR > cd ../.. > exec Contents/Resources/bin/Inkscape 6) Changed GTK theme (with gtk-chtheme) to Leopardish and font "Geneva 11pt" - MacOSX default And the result is Inkscape looking & working like native OSX (Leopard) application: * native look with GTK Leopardish-normal theme * native menus with ige-mac-menu-bar * native Name and application in Launch bar Yet I found some problems while doing those changes: * ige-mac-menu doesn't map properly keyboard shortcuts as it should (as it does with GIMP), those should be mapped with Ctrl<->Cmd transition, while they're not mapped at all with Inkscape * ige-mac-menu trick with returning NULL to avoid display the 2nd menu in the window makes probably some problem with updating the menu in the app in later stages so things like recent files don't show up in the app menu anymore * ige-mac-menu should be extended with Inkscape (bold) menu entries for preferences and application closure (I hope Mac users will know what I mean) * my tricks with Inkscape.app are as dirty as old tricks for X11 version, I believe that proper solution should anyway place final native binary of Inkscape in Contents/Resources/MacOS and map properly path in Contents/Resources for lib, etc, share,.. and so on without intermediate shell scripts (like mine) * toolbox should be set to small icons by default (SVN is set to big icons), unless the Inkscape window will forced to set its minimum height of toolbox height, which results in Inkscape not being resizable vertically on my MacBook at all ! (being too big) * Leopardish-normal theme and "Geneva 11pt" should be set by default in Inkscape.app somehow if no GTK settings (or other GTK installation) are present * ... and finally there's some problem with SVG View repaint, everytime it repaints (when opening or activating Inkscape window) the view is afterward erased by default (grayish) color (???) and then when I move the mouse over the view (which is erased with solid color), the repaints 2nd time, this time the proper output stays on screen. I believe it is problem of Inkscape not GTK+ cos it doesn't happen in any other place but just SVG (Document) view. Anyway my build works pretty well, there're some minor annoyances in some windows (like File open window) however it seems to be pretty stable (doesn't crash) and responsible. LPE plugin framework

Hi all, I'd like to start working on building a *plugin* framework for the LPEs (for example, but maybe tools too? dunno, let's try with LPE 1st). My motivation is two-fold: 1. I'd like people to be able to create new LPEs without requiring a new Inkscape release, like the current python extensions 2. it seems a challenging task! :) I'd like to hear opinions, tips, critique, everything about this from you. Dr Dobb's has very recently published articles about building such a framework which I am intending to follow (haven't read any of it, except the title). Again what do you think of this? Updating the win32 library bundle

Hi, all, Several people have been asking me to make additions and changes to the library bundle before the release. Since there are so many, I would like to try it incrementally rather than everything at once. This would make it easier to pinpoint a problem. So first I've added Cairo 1.5.6 and Poppler 0.6.4. The interaction between anti-aliasing, transparency, and gamma-correction

Hi All, This is my first post to this list, so I will keep things brief. First of all, I love Inkscape, and this is the reason for the message. My tests indicate that, when rendering, Inkscape implements anti-aliasing and transparency directly in a gamma-corrected color-space. Am I right? It is my opinion that these operations should instead be performed in a linear color-space. Although it is now probably too late to change the default behavior of transparency (given that the artists used gamma-corrected blends as reference while creating their content), it is not too late to modify the behavior of anti-aliasing. Also, perhaps a tag could be used on future files to identify that they were created under the assumption of linear-blends. Jim Blinn has a very good article on the subject: Jim Blinn, 2003 "A Ghost in a Snow Storm", Jim Blinn's Corner: Notation, Notation, Notation, Chapter 9, pages 133--146, Morgan Kaufmann There, he explains the problems that arise from performing blends in a non-linear space, in better words than I ever could. At any rate, I'd be happy to give examples and to elaborate on the topic once I receive a message that reassures me I am posting on the correct alias. Is this using a python extension to inkscape, or in an external application? Accessing Resource Data in Python Scripts

Hi All, I'm just working on a rendering extension, which needs to access a collection of source data files. Really I'd like to add a sub-directory to the extension scripts directory, but I'm having difficulty accessing the sub-directory, because when my script starts, it's working directory seems to be my home directory not the extension directory. So if I call the line inkex.etree.parse( "my-sub-dir/data.svg" ) it only returns successfully if my-sub-dir is in my home directory. Does anyone have any suggestions how to access my data files from their installation directory? Thanks Joel

But I thought those of you tracking the progress of the native GTK+ port to OSX might be interested in the following blog post from Mikael Hallendal from Imendio. http://micke.hallendal.net/blog/2008/01/30/happenings-in-gtk/ Quote: "Our aim is to have an easily installable framework for Mac OS X finished within the next couple of weeks to make it very easy to setup your Mac OS X machine for cross platform application development with GTK+." This is good news, as although it looks like the port still has some way to go before it is production ready, getting a framework build out there will greatly simplify testing apps like Inkscape and finding bugs. Hi, Sorry guys - I couldn't resist adding a new feature during feature freeze :) First shot at keyboard profiles for Corel DRAW and Zoner Draw has landed into trunk. I'll try improving bits here and there in he next days, but current version should be good enough already. Also, Adobe Illustrator profiles has been fixed and improved. If I'm lucky with spare time, I'll try adding another one for ACD Systems Canvas 11 too. P.S. filter node parameters UI

I have noticed the need for a way to configure x,y,width and height for the filtered area. These are paremeters of the <filter/> node. I am trying to code it but I got some problems that I was not able to solve. Maybe you can help me. Please take a look at this patch. It substitutes the original _settings_box by a Gtk::Notebook with 2 tabs. In the first tab we have the filter primitive settings. In the second tab I have put the filter settings (x,y,width and height) My doubts are: 1) am I coding correctly the setting of filter node parameters? 2) why doesn't the filter node parameters start hidden as it happens with the primitive settings? 3) we have some problem with the labels of the filter node settings. Could you please review this patch? It would be great to see this on pre1 release which seems to be scheduled for tonight. And it is certainly necessary for 0.46! best wishes, Juca PS: I also thought it would be cool to have these being adjustable by handles on canvas maybe, but that's not the case by now. Maybe we can work on this possible enhancement in a future version of inkscape.

Debugging under OS X

Hello, I was chasing a startup crash on OS X 10.3.9 and after some difficulty I found a way to get a backtrace from gdb. I hoped this to be simple, but possibly due to the fact that on OS X the Initial launcher app calls a script which calls a script which calls the actual binary, I think gdb got confused. Pencil tool interpolation

Hi all, I've been having trouble getting lines smooth looking when drawing with the pencil tool. Looking at the code, it seems like a reasonable job of interpolation is being done, but it is done while the path is being drawn, so it can't base the interpolation on all the points drawn by the user. I made some changes to do the interpolation of the entire path on button release: Here is an example using identical mouse points and identical tolerances: http://arcsin.org/temp/Screenshot-3.png On the left, is the current way; on the right, is the path interpolated using the entire curve. Deferring interpolation decreases the number of knots created and improves (imo) the result appearance. The tolerance is still adjustable in the same way it is currently. Here's the diff, which is only a demonstration, and in no condition to be actually used: http://arcsin.org/temp/diff In order to make the final patch, i guess the questions are ... is the way i'm saving the points ok (or should i use std::vector, etc), should we forgo interpolating at all during drawing and instead just show the user a line path (which would greatly simplify the pencil-context code)? or do people want to retain the old behavior and create a new setting/tool. regards, rob

I have just commited a feature that took me some time to implement (because it required artistic inspiration) It is an infobox that explains to the user what each available filter primitive does. I'd like to receive feedback about this feature. So, svn update; make; sudo make install and then check what changed on the filters dialog. make install is needed because I have added some images to the UI. One is still missing: feDisplacement Map. Anybody have any idea of how to depict this primitive in a mnemonical way? Juca

If you are a knowledgeable developer, but short on time to fix bugs, there is a way to mark bugs that you don't have time to fix yourself, but that you'd be willing to give advice to new developers on. This is done via the "Offer mentorship" link in the Actions column of a bug report. When you offer mentorship, the bug gets marked with a Swiss Flag. Newbie coders and developers looking for something to work on but who'd like some handholding, can search for these bugs in particular. If you choose to offer mentorship for a bug, it would be good practice to outline what the bug fix would involve, perhaps even indicating files/functions needing touched, and so on. Also, leave some tips for how best to contact you (IRC, email, comments in the bug) if they have questions. Bryce

There was a discussion in the irc channel today regarding exporting PDFs and Carl Worth happened to be there to triage things... well, it got taken to their lists and here's some important info for us. Just passing it on... Oh, and since I have to ask every once in a while. feImage filter progress

feImage renderer is working properly for images. Getting graphics from other svg elements is still not implemented Nicholas, could you work on the UI for this filter primitive, please? If you wish to do so, I suppose that it could be easier to construct it completely and just leave the svg element settings hidden, so that, as soon as we have the renderer working for svg elements too we can simply .show() this half of the feImage settings UI The reason why the renderer still does not work for svg elements is because I don't know how to get the NRPixBlock from an element given its id attribute. Maybe somebody here could help me on this? Juca

inkview can't show text blur and the cause of it

Hi, all: Inkview in front revision can't show text blur correctly. I traced the problem and find that in main() sp_document_ensure_up_to_date (ss.doc); should be put before ss.view = sp_svg_view_widget_new (ss.doc); not after. Otherwise the 'layout' member of SPText will have wrong value. And consequently, the 'item_bbox' will not be set correctly. By the way, I'm from China, and have been using Inkscape for more than one year. Usually, I use inkscape to design slides, and use inkview to show them.

Inkscape.org Drupal theme mockups needed

Hi all, The next item on our infrastructure todo list has been to move the website over to Drupal. Inc is about ready to turn on the code, so next we'll need a Drupal-ified website theme. It's amazing that despite three facelifts since Inkscape started, we've essentially kept the same underlying PHP bones of our website. Unfortunately, as we've grown they've exhibited some problems: 1. Contributors must know SVN to add to or update the website 2. New content must be created in PHP 3. To roll out changes you need an SSH account on inkscape.org 4. Our news/rss setup is limited in features and breaks often 5. Due to the above, the site's content has gotten pretty stale I'm very hopeful about our change, and think we'll be able to solve these issues well. In the year since we picked Drupal as the successor, I've been using Drupal to run my own personal website, and am finding it to be both easy to use, and very flexible and powerful. So the plan going forward is: A. Set up a demo site for folks to learn Drupal B. Test out Drupal's localization capabilities C. Start work on building up the site's content D. Design a new theme for the website E. Once we're ready/happy, cut over to the new site We will be targeting the new Drupal 6.0 (currently in beta). Localization - one of our most critical requirements - has been a top focus for Drupal 6.0 development, so I'm sure it will meet our needs, but we need to test it thoroughly, to ensure our translators will be comfortable using it. Regarding the content, I don't have any huge plans. As far as I'm concerned, we could move all the content into the wiki and manage it there. However, I've really enjoyed working in Drupal, and suspect that once people gain comfortability with it, they'll naturally want to build up content in it. But at this point, the news blog is my principle concern. Now, for the website theme and look and feel, this is a good opportunity for us to explore some new ideas (even including sticking with our current look and feel, just Drupalifying it to fit Drupal's new capabilities). What we're looking for at this point are mockups that work with Drupal 6.0. If you're feeling creative, and wish to learn about making Drupal 6.0 themes, why not give it a shot? Native File Dialogs for Windows are finally ready!!!

Hi All, I'm happy to announce, after all this time, that my native file dialogs for windows are now ready. I cannot believe how long it's taken to get them right, but they're working properly now - without needing any extra dependencies in the end. With the exception of the preview pane, the end result looks pretty unremarkable, but then that's the point of a native dialog! - I certainly wouldn't have believed the lengths it would be necessary to go to implement this. I might not have embarked on the project if I'd know, but it's done now. I guess it's too late to add this patch to the .46 release, but my NativeWin32FileDialogs branch is ready to be merged at an appropriate time. Take a look, if you're interested, or take a look at the attached screenshot. I'm trying to compile r17131 and have problems with tar-pax I'm using Ubuntu Gutsy and it compiled correctly before 17091. Since that I couldn't compile anymore. First I had automake 1.9, but I didn't even start (it asked for other version of automake). about screen licensing issues

I have seen on the winner about screen metadata that it is marked as "proprietary". I can see no citation about free content licensing on its page at devianART and I also notice that there was no requirement for free content licensing on the contest rules. This could lead to problems on packaging for debian and other gnu/linux distributions that have strict rules about licensing. I think that we should add this requirement on the next contest. We should also verify which license does needcoffee intend to use on his work (same is true for the #2) and update the SVG metadata. Juca

Batch export feature request

Simple request, I think it would be nice to support 'relative' exports when doing a batch export such that the 'inkscape:export-filename' paramters is relative to the location of the saved document. I <g id="item1" inkscape:export-filename="../images/item1.png" ...> and the file is saved as c:\documents and settings\allen\my documents\gfx\svgs\test1.svg, then it would save it as c:\documents and settings\allen\my documents\gfx\images\item1.png. But if I move the document or save elsewhere, it will export relative to that new location. In this case the export-filename could perhaps be in a 'universal' format that would work no matter what system it is on unix or windows path seperators don't matter. Just an idea. translatable about screen

Today I was wondering about how to make the about screen more easily translatable. I figured out that the main problem is that text and effects applied to it are stored as curves. Maybe if we could use raw text and apply filters to it, then translators would have an easier task. This made me try to implement the mirrored reflex effect that we can see in the 0.45 about screen using filters. This is what I came up with: (1) feImage xlink:href=#(gradientrect) (2) feDisplacementMap input=SourceGraphic and displacement map=(1) <-- makes the mirrored reflex (3) feComposite input1=(2) input2=SourceGraphic <-- adds the original image to it apply a linear gradient to the rect whose id is gradientrect This gradient must be setup so that it mirrors the source graphic when applied to feDisplMap We probably would need to have an additional primitive on this stack, in order to alter opacity in the reflex Unfortunately, we don't have feImage working yet. Maybe there is another way of implementing this. And it also remains the problem of having to depend on system available fonts Anyway, this is just brainstorm :-D This also brings to discussion the general question about tools to make easily translatable drawings using SVG. Undo looses selection (in Tweak tool)

Hello again, One other glitch which the tweak tool revealed: undoing looses selection. Example: draw a circle, switch to tweak, tweak, CTRL-Z, tweak again = you can't because the circle is not selected anymore. and furthermore: draw a circle, draw another, select all, switch to tweak, tweak circle nb 1, CTRL-Z, switch to select = only circle nb 2 is selected In fact this happens in all tools: draw a circle [-> it is selected], draw another [-> the second one gets selected], CTRL-Z = nothing is selected anymore This is not particularly annoying in all other tools but it is in the tweak tool, because undoing the first tweak deselects and an additional tool switch is necessary before one can tweak again. I already noticed that when the too was in its embryonic stage in the calligraphy tool... but failed to report it :( It would be nice if: - the selection could be kept in Undo history. this would solve the issue for all tools and in addition I found myself bitten by the lack of selection history several times. Ex: you try to select several small objects, it takes a while, you add another object by mistake, the only way to subtract it from the selection is to click on it again... which cool get messy if there are already several other objects selected, or if you added it via a select under or in group or... - there was a way to select objects directly from the tweak tool. this would, in addition, allow to avoid constant switches between the select tool and the tweak tool (not that s and and w are far apart on the keyboard but still). ALT is not already used as a modifier in the Tweak tool ;) Of course the selection behavior won't be as powerful as the select tool (since the select tool modifiers is already very complex and its modifiers are all full) but just ALT+click/drag = selects and SHIFT+ALT+click/drag = adds to selection would be nice.
