Yes, to make this discussion actually productive, there is a need for artists (and if you can make the icons as good as the gallardo, this is promissing!). The concensus seems to be around redrawing current icons in Tango style, keeping as much of the current design as possible and trying not to be too far from the Tango ArtLibre set at the same time. Doing that correctly is challenging but what's life without challenge ;) Concretely: - I first need to add a tango-icons.svg file to the SVN repository so that people can work on the same file, possibly at the same time. I will include old icons, and the ArtLibre set in the file so that everything is at hand to design the new ones. When we are finished, we will only keep the new ones. - People willing to contribute should familiarize themselves with the Tango icon style guidelines http://tango.freedesktop.org/Tango_Icon_Theme_Guidelines and get a feeling of what the result can be by looking at the ArtLibre set: http://tango.freedesktop.org/ArtLibreSet - The wiki page should be updated with the icons while we design them http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/TangoifiedIcons to get a feeling of where we are heading. I'll try to commit this today or tomorrow and then people can start drawing. Given that some icons are likely to be re-drawn several time to satisfy everyone, I think we should draw them quickly without too much detail and refine them afterwards rather than try to nail every detail in one shot. As for the more code-related stuff, as Jon said icons names should be changed to meet the Tango icon naming guidelines and icon loading code may beed to be made more generic but I see this as quite orthogonal to icon design ATM, so both projects can be donce independently for now. Clone tiler icons

Hello everyone, I am right in thinking that most of the clone tiler icons are now unused? There were come icons such as clone_tiler_per_row_color, clone_tiler_per_row scale and so on, while, in the interface, I just see the two simple clone_tiler_per_row and clone_tiler_per_column. bug? 'embed all images' can't find png files in local directory

Hi all, I am running into problems with the embedimages extension. Inkscape displays the linked image (which is in the same directory as the svg file) just fine, but then complains that it can't find the file when I ask it to embed the image. So there is some kind of mismatch in the two algorithms being used to follow links. I have posted this in the tracker (with test files, error message, etc) as bug # 1824893 ( http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1824893&group_id=9… ). Any help would be much appreciated! -Tom

Hi, Not sure this is the right list to write, but since about a week we've been experiencing problems with updating web-site using the publishing script: it complains about svn lock. This makes it impossible to make things like translated news available to visitors. Could this please be fixed? Alexandre

Windows developers beware!

Bob just changed building on Windows to default to dwarf2 things. This means that you should probably do the following if you hadn't already: 1. download the latest libpackage from inkscape.modevia.com http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32libs/devlibs-2.12-071101.7z 2. NOTE THE NEW c:\devlibs DEFAULT PATH FOR THE DEV LIBS!!! 3. see mingwenv.bat and build.xml to make sure the paths are correct 4. btool clean, and start using build.xml again (default) Hope you have no probs! For example, various tests in the test suite are currently failing against the PDF backend, and we'll get those fixed before the 1.6 release. But you're likely to notice more improvements than problems, so give this snapshot a try and let us know how it goes for you. Read more below for many details on the exciting things in cairo 1.5.2 compared to cairo 1.4.10. Have fun with cairo! -Carl New dependency on external pixman library ----------------------------------------- A significant change in this snapshot compared to all previous cairo releases is that cairo now depends on an external "pixman" library for its software rendering. Previously this same code was compiled internally as part of cairo, but now the code is separate so that both cairo and the X server can now share common code, (thanks very much to Søren Sandmann for his work on separating pixman and maintaining it). So users will need to acquire and build pixman before being able to build cairo. First, many operations that previously triggered image fallbacks will now be rendered as native vectors. These operations include: PDF: cairo_push_group, cairo_surface_create_similar, cairo_mask, A8/A1 surface sources, repeating/reflecting linear gradients. PostScript: cairo_push_group, cairo_surface_create_similar, gradients, bilevel alpha masks, (for example, all values either 0 or 255 for an A8 mask). Not only that, but when an image fallback is required, it will now be limited to only the necessary region. For example, a tiny translucent image overlaying a small portion of text would previously caused an entire PostScript page to be rendered as a giant image. Now, the majority of that page will be nice text, and there will only be a tiny image in the output. Additionally, the PostScript output now carefully encodes text so that if it is subsequently converted to PDF, the text will be selectable. This is very exciting progress, and we're hoping to hear from users during the 1.5 series about how things have improved, (for example, inkscape users doing cairo-based PDF export: please let us know how things look). And feel free to pass your thanks along to Adrian for his excellent work. NOTE: This much improved PDF output makes more sophisticated use of functionality in the PDF specification. This means that cairo's output will sometimes expose bugs in some free software PDF viewers, (evince, poppler, and xpdf, for example), that are not yet ready for such PDF files. We're working with the poppler maintainers to get these bugs fixed as quickly as possible. In the meantime, please double-check with other PDF viewers if cairo-generated PDF files are not being rendered correctly. It may be due to a bug in the viewer rather than in the PDF file that cairo has created. Robustness improvements ----------------------- Chris Wilson has made the largest contribution by far to cairo 1.5.2, (in number of commits). His more than 150 commits include a huge number of fixes to increase cairo's robustness. These fixes make cairo more robust against invalid and degenerate input, (NaN, empty path, etc.), against size-0 malloc calls, against memory leaks on error-recovery paths, and against other failures during error handling. He also implemented atomic operations to cairo, and used them to fix cairo's previously non-thread-safe reference counting, again improving robustness. Chris has put a tremendous amount of time and effort into writing analysis tools for this work, and in running those tools and fixing the problems they report. We're very grateful for this work, and hope that all cairo users appreciate the more robust implementation that results from it. This work is largely thankless, so it might make sense to notice sometime that cairo has been running quite smoothly for you, and when you do, send a quick "thank you" off to Chris Wilson, since it is all definitely running smoother thanks to his work. New API ------- There are no major additions to cairo's core API. The only new, generic functions are: void cairo_surface_copy_page (cairo_surface_t *surface); void cairo_surface_show_page (cairo_surface_t *surface); which can now be used much more conveniently than the existing cairo_copy_page and cairo_show_page functions in some situations. These functions act identically, but require only a cairo_surface_t* and not a cairo_t*. All other API additions are specific to particular backends. New cairo-win32 API (new font face function and "win32 printing" surface) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- There is a new function for creating a win32 font face for both a logfontw and an hfont together. This complements the existing functions for creating a font face from one or the other: cairo_font_face_t * cairo_win32_font_face_create_for_logfontw_hfont (LOGFONTW *logfont, HFONT font); There is also a new "win32 printing" surface: cairo_surface_t * cairo_win32_printing_surface_create (HDC hdc); This interface looks identical to the original cairo_win32_surface_create, (both accept and HDC), but the behavior of this new surface is very different. It should only be called with a printing DC, and will result in all drawing commands being stored into a meta-surface and emitted after each page is complete, with analysis to do as minimal image-based fallbacks as necessary. The behavior and implementation shares much with the PDF and PostScript backends. New cairo-ps API (EPS and PostScript level control) --------------------------------------------------- An often requested feature has been the ability to generate Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) with cairo. We have that now with the following very simple API. Just do cairo_ps_surface_create as usual then call this function with a true value: void cairo_ps_surface_set_eps (cairo_surface_t *surface, cairo_bool_t eps); [NOTE: As always with snapshots, it's possible---though not very likely---that the API could still be modified before a final release. For example, this is the first public cairo function that accepts a Boolean parameter. These include an implementation of EXTEND_NONE for linear and radial gradients, (so this extend mode will no longer trigger image fallbacks for these gradients), as well as native surface-mask clipping, (only on OS X 10.4+ where the CGContextClipToMask function is available). He also fixed a semantic mismatch between cairo and quartz for dashing with an odd number of entries in the dash array. We're grateful for Brian since not many quartz-specific improvements to cairo would be happening without him. Optimizations ------------- Optimize SVG output for when the same path is both filled and stroked, and avoid unnecessary identity matrix in SVG output. (Emmanuel Pacaud). Optimize PS output to take less space (Ken Herron). Make PS output more compliant with DSC recommendations (avoid initclip and copy_page) (Adrian Johnson). Methods for drawing circular handles and selection cues

Hello everyone! I am looking for the methods that draw little circular handles and selection cues respectively. Does anyone know these? I am making extensive use of SVG group nodes. I would like to be able to check where the center of an object is, in order to know if I previously changed the group matrix or the content's matrices. I found no way to easily check this in Inkscape. It is especially difficult to notice if a path object is changed or moved. I found that the default behaviour for dragging a path is that the path data gets altered, instead of applying a translation matrix. I plan to use the graphics as animation assets, so the difference matters to me. What I would like to do now is to make code modifications to draw a little circle at the center of a selected object, so I can clearly see when the contents or the path are off center. Can someone maybe help me and point me to the relevant classes and methods? I searched the source code and the mailing list archives, but without luck so far. I need: 1. The method that draws those little white circles, e.g. at the end of Bezier handles. 2. The method that draws a bounding box and the selection cue whenever an object gets selected, so that I can apply the circle. Many thanks in advance! The ffspiro subdirectory of the fontforge project has been removed. FontForge's configure script has been tweaked to look for libspiro. I hope this will be last major change in this area. I need to: Post some docs so other people (InkScape, etc.) can use libspiro too Wait a little bit and see if it works for other people before posting some libspiro releases. (I should add that these sources are based on Raph's updated work in his garden rather than the released tarball -- there's a shell script to grab current stuff from the garden included in the svn repository).

Minor export issue - rendering fine lines

I used this tutorial for creating hair in a recent image, http://www.grafikdesign-chris.de/Tutorials/Hairs.html, and found when I exported the image using 0.46 some of the streaks of hair were not drawn. Here's a image illustrating the worst area that was affected - http://img151.imageshack.us/my.php?image=inkscape046exportissueau5.png The left image is 0.45 and the right is 0.46. I'm seeing behavior that would seem to indicate that when you close the views on a document, the document stays in memory. I was noticing this as I was working in the ColorProfile object. If I delete a <color-profile> element from the XML view, I see SPObject's release(SPObject*) getting called, along with GObject's dispose (GObject*) and finalize(GObject*). However, if I close the single window opened for the doc, those never get called.

Hi Everybody My Name is Patrick. I have been communicating with Aaron about topics better suited to the developers list. Here is a little about me, what I can do and what I can't do yet. I buy, rebuild and resell spectroscopic and chromatographic instrumentation used in laboratories. I am determined to write an open source instrument control/data processing App for the instrumentation I sell. I have written a few simple Python scripts for my customers, so that they could control robotic instrumentation through the serial port but nothing too fancy yet. I would like to fine tune Inkscape's DXF export capabilities so that I can use it as a CAD program. I could use Qcad for this but I would rather stick to Inkscape. I bet it could be provide simple CAD abilities with a little tweaking. I presently program in Python only but I am going to get myself up to speed with C/C++ as soon as possible. My abilities are limited. I cannot provide any assistance with the graphics end of things. Perhaps I could help with real world device control. I am hoping to write a Linux based vinyl cutter control App. I hope my simple skills can be put to use within the Inkscape community. Thanks-Patrick

NEW: color gestures

Color gestures A new method for quick and precise adjustment of colors is added in this version: color gestures. It works on the selected objects by grabbing the fill or stroke color swatch in the selected style indicator (on the left of the statusbar) and dragging it in various directions as described below. Note that this only works when the swatch displays a flat color; it does not work for a swatch showing "None", "N/A", or displaying a gradient (although you can select one or more gradient stops in Gradient tool and color-adjust them by color gestures just as you would do for objects). Color gestures can work on fill or stroke, depending on which swatch in the selected color indicator you drag. Color gestures work in HSL color space. Dragging without any keyboard modifiers adjusts the hue channel, dragging with Shift adjusts saturation, and dragging with Ctrl adjusts lightness. The adjustment is done by rotating the color swatch away from the original direction which is assumed to be NE at 45 degrees (i.e. from the swatch into the document window). That is, once you click and drag the color swatch, imagine a line going from the point where you clicked in the NE direction, across the entire Inkscape window. By dragging below or to the right of that line, you decrease the corresponding color channel, to the minimum at the lower edge of the window; by dragging it above or to the left, you increase it, to the maximum at the left edge of the window. If you hover your mouse exactly over the 45 degrees line, the change will be zero. Note that you can easily vary the precision of your adjustment. If you drag close enough to the swatch, each small movement results in a big change of the color. If you need a finer adjustment, just drag farther away from the swatch, towards the center of the Inkscape window or even to its upper right corner, where minute movements will produce very small changes in the color. In fact, this method gives you more color precision than even the color wheel in the Fill and Stroke dialog, unless you expand that dialog to fill the entire screen which is rarely practical. Watch the statusbar which will indicate, as you drag, the channel you are adjusting, the original value of that channel, and the new value. You can switch channels while you drag. That is, you don't need to restart dragging from the swatch if you want to adjust all three channels - you can do it in one drag, pressing and releasing Ctrl and Shift as necessary. Note that when you change the keyboard modifiers during drag, the position of the zero-change line is temporarily set to the current position of the mouse; this is done so that there are no sudden changes in color if you are switching modifiers away from the original 45-degree line. For example, you can select a green rectangle and first turn it into greenish-blue by dragging away from the Fill swatch and slightly above the 45 degrees line; then, without releasing the mouse, press Ctrl and drag a bit to the right to darken the color; then press Shift, release Ctrl, and adjust saturation. You can press or release Ctrl and Shift as many times as necessary during a single drag; when you are finally satisfied with your color, release the mouse to commit the change. Apart from precise adjustments, you can use color gestures to quickly perform common color transformations: * Ctrl+drag the swatch to the right and down to color all selected objects black. * Ctrl+drag the swatch upwards and to the left to color all selected objects white. * Shift+drag the swatch to the right and down to desaturate the color of selected objects. * Shift+drag the swatch upwards and to the left to maximize saturation of the color of selected objects. Note that when several objects or gradient stops with different colors are selected, the selected style indicator shows their averaged color. If you adjust that color by gesturing, the changed color will be assigned back to all selected objects/stops, in effect eliminating any difference between them. If you want to adjust many different-colored objects preserving their relative differences, use the color modes of the Tweak tool or color adjustment extension effects. Hi Aaron I will search the archives tonight as I have no way of contacting Kees. I think I might be able to write/modify a program to log serial/USB port activity on Windows computers. cairo error in link phase

Hello inkscape-devel, I'm getting an error building Inkscape svn, it fails in the link phase with an undefined symbol: In function `Inkscape::Extension::Internal::PdfImportDialog::_setPreviewPage(int)': /home/chris/inkscape/inkscape/src/extension/internal/pdfinput/pdf-input.cpp:544: undefined reference to `CairoOutputDev::setCairo(_cairo*)' Can anyone suggest what I am doing wrong? I just moved from Kubuntu 7.04 to Kubunti 7.10 and for various reasons its a clean install not an upgrade. Previously I had Inkscape building fine. I believe I have all the dependencies, since autogen and configure don't moan at me about anything. Attached is the relevant error. I will start switching code to bool when i see it. I could not find a text saying that we should use bool or gboolean. Similar issue is 'char' or 'gchar'. Where can I read which types to use? Thanks! Changing the names of a gradient.

As far as I can see, the only way to change a the name of a gradient is to do it in the XML editor. With the new on-canvas editing ability, would it be feasible to have the ability to change the name of the current gradient in the tool control bar for the gradient tool? need help on filters

I would like to say that I am not much confortable with the filters implementation I was working on some time ago. I need help to make it work better. I know that there are bugs that are due to my incomplete broken implementation, but I am stuck because I still don't understand exactly how the filters infrastructure work I don't know how to properly implement zooming, nor rotation. Look at feturbulence. It does not rotate correctly. I also don't know whether I am using the best approach. I have used a pixmap buffer where I render the feturbulence effect and I have an "updated" flag. Then, if some parameters are changed (on sp-feturbulence.cpp) I set this flag to false. When the render method is called, it checks the updated flag and only recalculates the effect when the updated flag is false (and then sets it to true). When zooming, I will have to free the current pixmap buffer and create another one of greater size and recalculate it. It seems to me that zooming will have great slowdowns if I continue working that way. Any body know any kind of "design pattern" that I should be using to implement the zooming? I feel that I am walking the wrong way. And I keep scared about the possibility of not being able to fix these filters before next release deadline. Opacity Bug?

I found that a small bug in the Oct 18 build where the opacity for an object was incorrect. I had two object sharing the same gradient. One object was more opaque than the other even though the opacity for both was 100. I checked the XML editor and found that whilst both objects had Opacity:1, one of them had fill-opacity:0.71. I don't know how to reproduce this. It only happened once in an entire drawing. On a side note, I had been getting very confused when making a stop on a gradient transparent. I would change the Alpha value and the gradient would reflect the change, but later I would see the alpha value would be 255 instead of what I had set and what I saw on the graduent. It took me ages to spot that the alpha value was being replaced with the Master Opacity. Case sensitive font selection field

Hi, I posted this a couple of weeks before but never got a reply... So I'm reposting it once again: While working with some text in Inkscape, I found an unpleasant behaviour of the text selection field (the field above the font selection drop down menu): it is case sensitive. When I type "Arial" in it and hit enter, the selected text's font is changed to arial as it should. But if I type "arial" or "ARIAL", then I get a warning that the font is not found/installed. The expected behaviour is that no matter what case I enter in (like aRiaL) it must find the font I'm looking for (this is the behaviour of Illustrator, Indesign, Corel, Photoshop, Openoffice and many other programs). Although it is not a real bug, it is IMO a usability issue. By the way, I'm on Windows XP sp2. Is it the same on Linux? Mac? And should I fill a feature request or a bug report? Thanks! Molumen

Tablet issues

Ok, this is getting silly.... Bulya, I deleted the wiki entry on removing the GTK path, here is why... When I deleted the GTK path(s), the tablet mouse worked perfectly in Inkscape, however I later discovered that the pressure and tilt did not (also in Gimp). So, I uninstalled all GTK programs and reinstalled GTK 2.10.13. I also uninstalled Inkscape and reinstalled 0.45-1 then copied over Inkscape-dev from October 18th. Now the mouse returned to its previous behaviour so (just to be sure) I reinstalled the Wacom drivers (latest) and no change. So, to summarize - With gtk paths, mouse doesn't work but pressure/ tilt does. Without GTK paths mouse does work but pressure/ tilt doesn't. There must be a way to fix this as so many people have it working but removing GTK does not work for me, especially as Gimp makes far more use of pressure and that also fails with no GTK. As Gimp is also affected it must be due to GTK so for now I am going to have to give up on this one but I will post on the GTK forum to see what happens there. Testing needed on OS X Intel

Hello everyone, I would need someone with a 'virgin' system on an Intel machine to test the latest dev build. By 'virgin' I mean: - without Fink or MacPorts or a custom installed python - without modifications to ~/.macosx/environment.plist (- without modifications to ~/.bashrc -- this one should not be a problem but who knows) - without the python modules that were distributed previously alongside Inkscape or in the dev builds repository Basically this means that if you just install regular mac applications by drag and drop and never bothered to install Python for Inkscape, you are the one I need ;) I made some modifications to Inkscape so that the python modules that Inkscape uses for the "Effects" are directly integrated inside the application and work out of the proverbial box. So I need you to download and install (drag-and-drop, as usual) this: http://inkscape.modevia.com/macosx-snap/Inkscape-16250-i386.dmg Run it, draw something with the calligraphy tool for instance and apply two effects to it: - Color > any color effect - Generate From Path > Intrude Extrude Halo Both should work with no additional work. If your system is not as virgin as I described but that you still want to help, it is possible. You only need to remove the python packages you could have installed previously, to be sure these do not come into play here. You need to remove the folders _xmlplus, lxml and numpy from /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/ 2.3/lib/python2.3/site-packages and then follow the steps described above. If you have Fink/MacPorts with python or a custom python install from MacPython however, this change won't affect you since Inkscape will use your newer python install and discard the pre-compiled python modules which are made for the system install of Python. You still need to install lxml and numpy via Fink/MacPorts or by compiling them from source. Please report here your success or failure. Pencil weight

Hi, Not sure whether to ask this here or in users... I sketch a cartoon (with the mouse) and I like to use the single path line (pencil) tool to do it -- mainly because I can clean the lines quickly. If I use the calligraphy tool it;'s nice, but hard to tweak. I have found that the freehand line tool in Sodipodi actually works far better for this. It has a "weight", a slowness to it that produces fantastic lines and curves and with only a few nodes to tweak. Naturally, the rest of Sodipodi is in the Dark Ages and I prefer Inkscape, but that single tool is more useful in the older app. I see that Calligraphy has a 'weight' setting, and this does help, but is there some way to weight the freehand line tool in Inkscape? \d -- "Life results from the non-random survival of randomly varying replicators." -- Richard Dawkins

Hello, We are a team of five french students from the "Ecole Centrale de Lyon" (an engineer high school, see www.ec-lyon.fr). Our programs are quite general, we attend programming lessons but we are not informatics specialists In second year, we have to work on a professional project for five months (officialy 4 hours a week, but... we can spend much more time). I thought it would be a good idea to help developing inkscape. The only things the school demands is a tutor (in our case, from the dev team) and requirements. The tutor will be here to help on specific technical questions, to check the progress of the project and to validate goals. I have been using inkscape for two years for serious projects. In Gradient tool: * Moving gradient handles by arrow keys is restored (it was broken for some time) * Press Ctrl+A to select all stops in the selected objects. * When two or more adjacent stops are selected, pressing Ins adds stops in the middles of all selected stop intervals. * Intermediate stops can be mousedragged along their gradient line, within the limits of the adjacent unselected stops (or end handles). * Dragging with Ctrl moves the selected stops snapping them to 1/10 fractions of the available range. * Dragging with Alt moves the selected stops depending on how close each one is to the stop being dragged, using a smooth bell-like curve similar to the node sculpting feature in Node tool. This makes it easy to approximate different gradient profiles; for example, if you have a two-stop gradient that you want to shape according to a curved profile, select both ends of the gradient, press Ins a few times to add a number of intermediate nodes, then Alt+drag a node in the middle to smoothly profile the gradient. * Pressing Ctrl+L with some intermediate stops selected attempts to simplify the selected portion of the gradient, removing those stops that can be removed without too much change in the way the gradient looks. In particular, new stops created by double-clicking or pressing Ins initially do not change the appearance of the gradient, so if you press Ctrl+L, all redundant stops that weren't moved or repainted since creation will be deleted. -- bulia byak Inkscape. Just so you know the user list is good but for issues like this the devel list is easier to get responses from the developlers as they watch it all the time. Or filing a bug report with the tracker if it hasn't been done, most bugs get looked at during the release cycle. As to this bug i think this maybe a GTK bug as Synfig has the similar issue of not being able to use the mouse for input when input from a tablet is turned on. Toolbar Issues

I just installed Inkscape in my Samsung Q1 UMPC. Inkscape works pretty nicely, but here are a couple issues regarding the main tool bar on the left side. 1) If I undock the tool bar, doesn't stay above the canvas. There should be a means of forcing the tool bar to stay "on top". 2) I can't dock the tool bar along the top with the other tool bars. It would be nice if I could change it from a vertical tool bar to a vertical tool bar. The screen on the Q1 is a tad short to show all of the tools when the tool bar is attached on the left hand side.

Hello all, I've had this question about a compilation error with inkscape trunk on inkscape-users for a few weeks now, and I'm moving it here to inkscape-dev to see if I can get it in front of the right eyes. I'm really missing the fun of running inkscape trunk. I expect this is something specific to my platform (multiple machines running Gentoo ~x86), and not a general problem with the codebase, since I haven't seen other reports of this particular compilation error. There are no relevant Gentoo bugs filed for this issue. If anyone had suggestions on possible problems with or missing dependencies, please let me know. The ebuild I'm using to build /trunk is nearly identical to the working inkscape-0.45.1.ebuild. Maybe I'm missing a recently added dependency. Alternatively, if there's a .configure option that can suppress compilation of this pdfinput extension, I'd be more than happy to use that as a workaround. Hello everybody, I just took some time to make the "persistent undo" patch (http://people.csail.mit.edu/sarasu/history/) working with todays SVN and to make it also compile with gcc 4.1.2. It's patch #1816710 in the patch tracker. When applying the patch - don't forget to "./configure" again because of new files. Effect that modifies the document properties?

Hello. I'm trying to write an Effect extension that will allow the creation of cover templates for perfect bound books, which involves changing the document properties and adding guides lines to the current document. I have a Ruby script and an .inx file set up correctly, and when I examine the XML output from the script, the SVG that is returned is correct. When this file is written back to stdout at the end of the script, no changes occur within Inkscape. Can Effects modify the document properties and, if they can't, would it be a good idea to add a new type of extension that could? Thanks, John

Hey Inkscapers, After my last mail about text, I played around a little more again and stumbled over a very strange behaviour. I have to boxes which are combined and text is flowed into them. I placed them one below the other... I imagined the text would continue in the second box... but unless its really close, it doesn't. Open the attached fly, mark the below box with the node-selection tool by selecting all nodes and move the box down with the arrow keys... the text will disappear from it. I guess I should file a bug, shouldn't I? But maybe it would be good to know, what causes the problem... Cheers! David

Hi bulia, Joshua, and all: I apologize for my delay in replying to your messages. I just got back from the UIST conference, where I met many UI researchers -- and fellow Inkscape users. Thanks for your enthusiasm about the undo-saving feature! We would like to release the code for this for all the reasons you mentioned: to comply with the GPL, to get users across platforms, and ultimately to contribute to the Inkscape project. [We'd also welcome help identifying and fixing bugs. :)] What is the best way to do this? As the number of files touched is small, perhaps the fastest is to post these on our website, then work on adding the changes to the SVN trunk. Thanks for your invitation to do so. Canvas Rotate - Alternative?

Is the canvas rotate idea currently being implemented? I found the thread from April which had a lot of great ideas but I didn't know if anyone was working on it of if it's on the list of things to do. I know what was discussed sounded like really clever stuff and I can only guess how difficult the feature may have been to implement. So I was wondering if a simple alternative could be adopted instead - the alternative being that instead of rotating the Inkscape viewport we rotate a SVG layer. I could just rotate a group, but I think rotating a layer instead is bit easier since you won't have to jump in and out of the group everytime you need to adjust the rotation. But there isn't a control for rotating layers currently. The control could be displayed on the layer palette and behave much the same as the Opacity slider. The only catch is, for it to be most useful, it would be best if the centre of rotation could be quickly and easily set where you wanted. Problem compiling with gcc 4.2.2 and libsigc++2.0 v2.1.1

Hi, I have a serious problem getting to inkscape-svn to compile with gcc 4.2.2 and libsigc++2.0 v2.1.1. It used to work with gcc 4.2.1 and v2.0.18. Also, I have been trying to get the beautiful PDF Import to work (and actually got it to work with the above mentioned software). There was a problem with poppler not installing the Cairo headers by default. You might or might not be aware of the fact that this has a reason: the poppler guys do not guarantee a stable API for those functions. I have talked to one of them on IRC and he was disappointed because of the lack of communication between the SOC students and the poppler devs... I just mean to make you aware of the fact that there might be incompatibilities lying ahead, which I would deeply regret, because I have seen the PDF import work, and am totally blown away by it. Which Non-Latin Scripts Do Free Software Fonts Not Cover?

Hi All, I've just started the Masters degree in Typeface Design at the University of Reading (for which Gentium was a submitted project) and we're expected to do a non-latin script complement to our font, and I'd thought I'd ask around if anyone here has any opinions about the following: Are there non-latin scripts that free software fonts do not cover at all at the moment? Which non-latin script communities are adopting free software and would benefit from more fonts? Does Inkscape have problems with setting any scripts in particular? :-) -- Regards, Dave

Inkscape less strict than Batik

Hi, maybe the following post is of some interest - it talks about replacing Inkscape with Batik as the SVG renderer for OpenStreetMap, and the fact that Batik is more strict than Inkscape in some regards (which should be fixed in Inkscape AIUI). The "issues" mentioned there are memory usage (since OSM got some very detailed maps with lots of elements due to the TIGER data import) which makes Inkscape die with an out-of-memory message (sometimes with destroying the preferences.xml file). How are selected nodes passed to Inkscape Extension Scripts

I was reading over the Scripting HOWTO for Inkscape in an attempt to discover how selected nodes are identified and/or passed to extension scripts by Inkscape. (I was thinking that I might be able to identify and fix a possible bug in the inkex.py file, or maybe see if I could get a Beanshell script to work.) However, after reading over the documentation and the man page for Inkscape, I can't figure out how selected nodes are passed to the scripts. I have examined selected objects in Inkscape's XML editor, and selection information does not appear to be stored in the actual SVG information. So I'm guessing the selected nodes are passed as a parameter? Is this true? If so, what is the name of the parameter and how are the selected nodes represented? If it is not true, are the selected nodes identified in the temporary SVG script some how? I hope I'm not being a pest with my questions. Thank you for the help. Landon

Problem with getselected method in inkex.py

I was trying to write a little extension script that printed the id of all selected paths in an Inkscape document. I seem to have hit a snag. I think there may be a bug in inkex.py, or I am not using it correctly. (The latter is more likely.) Here is the stack trace I get when I try to run my script: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/share/inkscape/extensions/printPathIds.py", line 46, in ? effect.effect() File "/usr/share/inkscape/extensions/printPathIds.py", line 25, in effect self.getselected() File "/usr/share/inkscape/extensions/inkex.py", line 139, in getselected for id in self.options.ids: AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'ids' It seems like the error is indicating that there is nothing selected in Inkscape when the script is run. (I think that is what it means when it says 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'ids'.) However, I do have paths selected in Inkscape when I try to run the script. Do you guys have any suggestions on how I can correct the error? Thanks for all the help. Scott Huey P.S. - I have attached a copy of the Inkscape extension script that generates the error message.

Inkscape House plan wish list

Inkscape wishlist - October 2007 Curr. version 1.45.1 on Kubuntu Dapper Drake. Please forgive the intrusion, perhaps this will be of use to someone and maybe it'll spark a thread of ideas. (Is there a more appropriate place to submit wish-lists?) I have recently been designing our house using inkscape to do the top-view plan. I have found it far more flexible than the only other option, Qcad. While I have enjoyed the use of layers and clones, there are several down- sides that I thought I'd list in the form of wishes for the future. I am sure there are ways to do these things, and misconceptions on my part, it's just the way I came-at the thing. THE LIST 1. Rotate entire page - the plan is designed square, but the house is seated at an angle. Nice to be able to see the house angled, but continue to design square. 2. Clones break when you move them to new layers. If you cut/paste them, or just shift pgup/pgdown them, all clones become groups. 3. It would be super if "symbols" (original groups that are used as clones) could be kept in a separate .svg file and referred-to within other svg files. That way, the symbols don't have to be *in* every file that uses those clones. 4. Measurements: If there were at least a ruler tool that could be measured in length (at any angle) rather than the width/height of it's bounding square, it would really help in designing accurately when things don't remain square. Better yet, a way to get the length of a section of an element - perhaps by selecting nodes and having it show the lengths in a readout somewhere. Or, when you draw a line it could show the length along with the other usual info. 5. A tool to measure that draws lines with arrow ends and includes a label which you can control to display units as you need. For example, I used 10 px = 1 m on my drawing. So I would like to see measurement lines saying: <--- 10m ---> That would mean I get to enter a conversion formula somewhere so that it prints the correct value and unit. 6. A label near the W/H display which auto-calculates the area of a thing; at least for rectangles and three node shapes. More complex shapes would be good. 7. A tool whereby you can draw a path and have it calculate the area under it, with a pull-out label showing the area (again with unit and conversion properties). 7.5 (I just remembered) It would be nifty if a kind of "spreadsheetyness" could infiltrate Inkscape. For example, I often wanted to add a list of areas (that I manually calculated and noted as text objects here and there) together and display a total area in a text object on another layer. If that could be automated by variables and formula... Just imagine! 8. A way to group objects *across* multiple layers: I wanted to clone my entire plan which has many layers (one for lights, one for doors, one for walls, etc.) so that I could rotate it to face North-East. I wanted to be able to work within the original group and have the clone reflect the changes in scale, shape and movement I make. But as soon as I group my plan, all the layers snap to one layer. 9. Node aligning: 1) Align to bottom/top/left/right as opposed to an average align to the middle of all the nodes selected. 2) Select more than one object and select nodes across them and align. Great for lining walls up when they are not one path. 10. A way to export the selected item(s) out to an svg file. I find that copy/paste between Inkscape instances on Kubuntu just plain does not work. So I end up making "cut.svg" files with one item in it so I can import that to the next file. Boring really. So being able to pull something out of a busy file and send it to a file would speed that. 11. Layers: For both lock and visible; a way to on/off all at once, also a way to affect the "others" - for example: "hide all other layers". 12. Layers: A way to view a particular layer as an outline while the others show fills etc. 13. Layers: A way to have guides on a per-layer basis. I often wanted guides for the walls and different guides for sundry things and there are just too many guides to use properly. I suppose I could draw lines on a layer and snap to them, but it's not the same as guides. 14. Dialogues: It would be super if one could close a dialogue by hitting ESC. That's my list. I've prob. forgotten some. Many of these things should not be an SVG version clash -- they are something Inkscape could do in the background to make life easier. (Except, perhaps, wish 7.5) \d

nodepath.cpp compile failure with gcc3 - more info

Hello, I did more digging into the gcc3 compile failure in nodepath.cpp and I think I found the source of the problem. nodepath.cpp includes 2geom/path.h (via live_effects/effect.h via live_effects/lpeobject.h) which defines the class Path in the namespace Geom. livarot/livarot-forward.h declares 'class Path', without a namespace. This seems to cause gcc3 confusion. Possibly this is the problem mentioned in the comment in nodepath.cpp: "/// evil evil evil. FIXME: conflict of two different Path classes!" ? Has anyone thought about a fix to this before? It seems like a possible solution would be to add a namespace around the Path class in livarot or to rename one of the classes, but I'm not sure what the ripple effect would be. I tried adding "Geom::" or "::" to Path in a couple places, but it didn't seem to work. Thanks, John

I do keep a separate file for my favorite symbols/drawn objects which I copy into various drawings. I want them to be a pure copy so I can modify them any way I want in that particular drawing. File dependency is not an entirely bad thing. Being able to modify a graphical widget in one file and have instances of the widget updated in many files can be very useful. It would be a cool option to be able to save dependencies... but I wouldn't want it to be the default. > 4. The Measure Path effect can already do measurement at any angle. I'd certainly give it a go when I needed to do some CAD work if somebody wanted to create it... but I would hate it if Inkscape became too much like other CAD tools. > 10. I had an SVG file where some of the colour were defined using CSS as a top-level style tag. When they were opened in Inkscape they displayed fine, but those colour came out wrong when copied to a new file since I guess the CSS values were not copied across. I was able to paste it to the other file with correct colours by: 1) Open the file in Inkscape 2) Select the relevant objects and copy 3) Paste them within the same document 4) Copy the newly pasted selection 5) Paste that into the new document These steps don't work with you balloon example. Your problem looks similar but with gradients instead of CSS, probably because the gradients are named the same in different coloured balloon images, so the pasted blue balloon just references the red balloons gradients in the pasted version since they are named the same. I'm not sure if this should be considered a bug or not (multiple pasted balloons use the same gradients). CC'ing to the developers list to see what people think about this, and whether there is any kind of hidden option to get the behaviour you want. Cheers, Michael

Does anyone has a slightest idea, or even a suggestion, of why we have these two commands on Windows but not on Linux? What is the difference? This was recently discussed in this bug: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=604306&aid=979164&group_i… whose findings can be summarized as follows: - Linux has the single Print command, it offers a choice between PS/bitmap printing, and it works (at least the PS printing works, I didn't test bitmap printing much). - Windows has "Print" and "Print Direct". The former works but offers no PS/bitmap switch, and works only as a bitmap. Hey all, In looking for XSLT scripts that'd be useful for Linux I ran across: http://vdxtosvg.sf.net/ It's a script to use the XML format that is used by Visio, and turns it into SVG. Seems potentially useful. But, I'm e-mailed the author and he's not really interested in maintaining it. It seems like he'd probably be willing to answer questions, but I didn't ask explicitly. Order of Selected Items Presented To Extension Scripts

Warning: This question might be specefic to Inkscape extension scripts written in Python. I've come up with ideas for several little extensions scripts I'd like to write for Inkscape. Most deal with allowing the type of "precision" drawing that would make Inkscape more suitable for precision drawing. I keep running into an obstacle when I think about the design of these scripts, and I thought I might get some help here. An example may be the easiest way to ask my question. I want to write a script that makes one line segment parallel or perpendicular to another line segment. The problem is that I want to make the line segment selected last by the user parallel to the line segment that is selected first, not the other way around. I'm looking for a way to do this without having the user run two scripts. The first to select the line that will not be modified, and the second to select the line that will be modified and that then performs the operation. Does Inkscape "deliver" the selected items to an extension script in the order they were selected? Or is the order random? If the order isn't random, which items (or nodes) would come first? Color Tweak - Option to not create new gradient

Is there an option so when you tweak the colours of a gradient it modifies the current gradient rather than makes a copy then modifies it? I normally reuse gradients on multiple objects to intentially keep them same for if I decide to change colours. I don't know if others feel the same, but my preference would be that when I tweak the gradient on one object, all other objects that also use that gradient should change also. Tool names in tooltips

One minor issue I have with Inkscape is that the tools aren't named in the tooltips. This doesn't effect my own use, but when attempting to help someone else I like to refer to tools by their correct names and I don't know what some tools are called off the top of my head. Refering to them by their description in impractical. The only way I know how to find out the correct name of a tool is to look at the Keys and Mouse reference. Is it possible to put the tool name in the tooltips? Inkscape staff-picked at Apple again

Hello, Just a quick note to let you know that, after changing Inkscape description text at Apple, the project gained a little visibility (it was marked as updated) but also changed location (moved from Unix & Open source to Imaging & 3D) and lost its staff-picked status. As of today, Inkscape has been staff-picked again and, maybe more importantly, is back in the top ten most popular applications in its new category (it is number 6): http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/imaging_3d/index_top.html There is no indication of how the "popularity" is judged but since the list features old and new items, staff-picked as well as non- staff picked items etc. my guess is that a simple metric such as the number of clicks on the download link or the number of visits to the product page is used. Case sensitive font selection field

Hi, While working with some text in Inkscape, I found an unpleasant behaviour of the text selection field (the field above the font selection drop down menu): it is case sensitive. When I type "Arial" in it and hit enter, the selected text's font is changed to arial as it should. But if I type "arial" or "ARIAL", then I get a warning that the font is not found/installed. The expected behaviour is that no matter what case I enter in (like aRiaL) it must find the font I'm looking for (this is the behaviour of Illustrator, Indesign, Corel, Photoshop, Openoffice and many other programs). Although it is not a real bug, it is IMO a usability issue. By the way, I'm on Windows XP sp2. Is it the same on Linux? Mac? And should I fill a feature request or a bug report? Thanks! Molumen

BIg slowdown using Tweak tool -- sp-item.cpp

Hi, all. It looks like a change that occurred in rev. 15821 has caused some big performance issues when using the Tweak tool. In sp_item_update, this block of code is called with every update: if (item->display && item->display->arenaitem) { NRRect item_bbox; sp_item_invoke_bbox(item, &item_bbox, NR::identity(), TRUE, SPItem::GEOMETRIC_BBOX); NR::Maybe<NR::Rect> i_bbox = item_bbox; nr_arena_item_set_item_bbox(item->display->arenaitem, i_bbox); } and this is making the Tweak tool very slow to respond. Is there a better way of computing the SVG bounding box for the Arena item on an as-needed basis, rather than with every update? Also, I looked at other places that used item->display and that seems to be a linked list instead of just a single item. Thanks, John

PDF import extension

Hi, the cairo-based simple PDF import extension has been in trunk for a while (well, for a week or so :) ). Now I have committed a preliminary version of the native libpoppler-based one to trunk (you can activate it by uncommenting the line Internal::PdfInput::init() in src/extension/init.cpp). I did commit this unstable version because I need your help regarding a strange bug. (forwarding this to devel list as well) This sounds like a very nice addition. We (developers) actually were thinking about adding something like that, as an option. Would you consider adding your patch to the SVN trunk so it becomes part of the official Inkscape releases? For users, persistent undo is an important enough feature by itself, with or without helping your graphics research :) And if you keep working on it to add more features like selective undo, this is much better to do in the main trunk. Tabbing in Docked Dialogs (0.45+Dev, Sept 6 Release)

Using the tab key while editing parameters inside docked dialogs in the development version doesn't work as expected. Tabbing still cycles the object selection as though the canvas has focus. This can lead to very unwanted results if you enter data, tab to the next parameter, enter more data, then hit return. Is this tabbing behavior while in the docked dialogs intentional? - Tony

nodepath.cpp compile failure with gcc3; which isnan.h?

Hello, I did 'svn up' to version 16183 and hit trouble in nodepath.cpp when building with gcc 3.3 under OS X 10.3.: ... g++ ... nodepath.cpp ... 2geom/linear.h:90: error: `isfinite' undeclared in namespace `std' I noticed that src/2geom/linear.h includes src/2geom/isnan.h, which is a bit different from src/isnan.h. The former does not have gcc3/apple ifdefs. Was isnan.h copied into 2geom at some point, and if it should be the same file, why not just let the include path find the one in src/? By the way, replacing src/2geom/isnan.h with src/isnan.h (which has the ifdef gcc3 stuff) does not fix this. Thanks, John

Little enhancement for font toolbox dropdown

Heym some guys on irc forced me to write this on the mailinglist :) I had to test 200 fonts if they fit for my text. Everytime I selected some font from the list, the dropdown menu closed. Quite annoying for me. This little patch prevents automatic closing, enables browsing via arrow-up and arrow-down, and closing of the dropdown menu via return/enter. I noticed the attached slide on Ted's presentation on Inkscape extensions. In the python example available online I see how to use the automatic GUI for scripts to collect text or String data. Can someone point out some examples or documentation that explains how to set up an automatic GUI for a script that uses enumerations or radio buttons? Composite Filter, arithmetic mode

Hi, I've been studying the filter primitives. While the work that has been done is quite impressive, there seems to be quite a bit of polishing to do. I am currently having trouble with the Composite filter primitive. As I read the standard, the K values in the Arithmetic mode can be negative. This leads to the case where one or more of the calculated RGBA values can be negative. Of course these must eventually be clamped at zero. However, the calculation is done by using integers with the K values multiplied by a power of 255. The resulting integer is then normalized to be between 0 and 255 by the NR_NORMALIZE_31 function located in nr-pixops.h. This function uses the FAST_DIV_ROUND routine (also in nr-pixops.h) which is only valid for non-negative numbers.... thus it gives the wrong result (a positive value instead of zero). Can an expert suggest a fix? Tav

Xara's designers think that "named colors" is a great feature of their program and I agree with them. Changing the color of 100 objects without affecting 100 other objects that have the same current color on the canvas can be achieved easily with named colors (complicated selections may be needed otherwise). With two-stop gradients one must edit two stoppoints, with one-stop gradients just one ... of course. Linked gradients (and colors), that is unforked ones, can save SVG code and improve loading (and perhaps rendering) speed. Moreover, this feature is already there! So, why removing it? It just needs to be made more perspicuous ... and perhaps enhanced with "shades" of the same color, another great feature of Xara, for which the code in Inkscape is already there according to Jon Cruz!! CMS display adjustment change

Hi, I just checked in an update with icc color profiles and setting display calibration. Now upon startup latest SVN Inkscape will search the standard locations for profiles ~/.color/icc /usr/local/share/color/icc /usr/share/color/icc Then under the misc preferences you'll have a checkbox for enabling display calibration, along with a drop-down combo box that allows you to pick between all RGB display profiles found. Getting the ID of the selection in a Python script for Inkscape.

I was wondering how to obtain the current selection from within an Inkscape script written in Python. I note that the getselected method in the inkex.py file contains a comment that says it "Collect selected nodes". Does this mean that it only returns the nodes from the selection? Does it return the DOM representation of the selection? What is the quickest way, if it is even possible, to obtain the current selection in Inkscape from a python script? I'm thinking maybe I can get an id of the selection with a helper method an then use some methods in to get the DOM element of the selection using the "id" attribute. I hope my question makes sense. I've been trying to read through some of the material online about writing scripts and/or extensions for Inkscape, but I must admit it is a little confusing for me. I appreciate your patient assistance. I will do my best to post a summary of any responses to this question on the Inkscape wiki if that would help other future script writers. :] Scott Huey

NEW: CDR (CorelDraw) import via UniConvertor

Inkscape can use UniConvertor (http://www.sk1project.org/modules.php?name=Products&product=uniconvertor) if it's installed on your system to import documents in CDR format (CorelDraw). This feature is Unix-only at this time (since UniConvertor is Unix-only) and requires that you have Python and UniConvertor installed. 3D box guides offset

Hi, When manupulating 3D box from copy of the window I see blue guides offset: http://img02.picoodle.com/img/img02/9/9/22/f_3dboxguidesm_484ca96.png What I did is 1) created a new view of the window; 2) selected the 3D box; 3) moved it to the right/bottom; 4) pressed X and saw the lines misplaced. In other cases the new tool seems to work fine and I wonder why it's not enabled in the toolbox yet ;-) Kudos to Maximilian! Alexandre

I am thinking about an 'Enveloppe' path effect (LPE), something similar to the path-along-path LPE: http://www.inkscape.org/screenshots/gallery/inkscape-0.46-lpe-pathalongpath… You'll need to draw two paths, one for the upper bound (ellipse in your case) and one for the lower bound. You apply the effect to your 'Text > Object to Path' and then your text or path will be stretched from upper bound to lower bound. You'll then be able to edit the bounds live on-canvas, so you can quickly change things around :) I am not sure whether this will make 0.46, probably not unless some other developer is interested in implementing this. empty directories

Hi, To the best of my knowledge, by default several empty directories are created by Inkscape installations: $PREFIX/share/gradients, fonts and patterns. I've already seen several times people asking, where they can find patterns or gradients for Inkscape, because they think that something is supposed to be put there :) Should we get rid of them until we properly support that functionality? And do we have some kind of vision for patterns/gradients libraries? Alexandre

SVG filter effects and Batik source code

The support for all SVG filters (Filter Effects) is very good in Batik (http://xmlgraphics.apache.org/batik/). Since the source code is available, would it be a good idea just to take that code and adapt it?? Problem with document base / xlink:href and embbed images

Hello everyone, I just tried to embed images in a new Inkscape document, created with a recent SVN build of Inkscape, and it did not work. Here is the problem (it's quite tricky): The SVG document comes from a computer with a different directory organization. It has images linked in it, that are in the same directory that the document. I open it on my machine and copy parts of it (some paths + some bitmaps) to a new, untilted document. Inkscape copies the images with xlink:href containing a relative link to the image (just the name in this case) and sodipodi:absref which is not valid anymore (it contains the directory structure of the other machine). In the new document, images initially appear as broken links since the absref is not valid and the document has not been saved, hence the root is unknown. I save this new document next to the orignal one, so that the relative links are respected. Once saved, the xlink:href become valid but the images are still show as broken. I have to reopen the document to see the images (which is probably a problem in itself). In the XML editor, just to be sure, I deleted the sodipodi:absref elements which were not valid anyway. Then I tried to embbed the images and Inkscape complained saying "No xlink:href or sodipodi:absref attributes found, or they do not point to an existing file! Unable to embed image. Sorry we could not locate /Applications/Inkscape.app/ u_velocity_bottom.png" The absref attributes are not there so that's fine but the xlinks are valid. However Inkscape looks for images in /Applications/ Inkscape.app which is the default location where documents are saved on OS X. If I remember well there was a document root attribute that was removed some time ago. I suspect that embbed bitmaps was looking for the images as document root+xlink and since document root is inexistant the default is used. This means that embbed images only works when sodipodi:absref is present, now that document root does not exists. This seems like a bug to me but the problem was complicated so I would prefer having your advice. Did I explained it clearly? Well currently I'll have to rewrite the sodipodi:abserf by hand and it will solve the problem but the solution may be quite hard to find for somebody who does not want to dive in the XML editor. Decision on live update of extensions

What was the decision on the live update of extensions? The original justification was that it would happen in a separate thread so you wouldn't notice, but it is *very* noticeable. At least on Windows with the snapshot builds. The worst part of it theres a DOS console that pops up every time the command gets rerun, and often that steals the focus away from the text field you're trying to type some number into. It's very annoying. --bb

Hello everyone, As I mentioned earlier, I updated Inkscape description at Apple downloads. The description was taken from the text on the main page of the site and now that I played a bit with it and compared it to other software, I tend to find it quite verbose and technical. This text is what people will copy paste to describe Inkscape (as I did) and does not look to appealing to me. For example I don't think there is enough emphasis on the UI which is one of Inkscape greatest strengths while some very basic things (shapes, paths, etc) are mentioned while they can be considered self evident. Would a rework of this text be acceptable or has it already been reworked many times and this is considered final? How do you want Inkscape to be perceived: as a UI on top of SVG or as a vector editor that happens to use SVG as its format? More specifically about Apple Downloads, I just thought I would let you know that their staff updated Inkscape description. Now Inkscape has a nicer screenshot, a more detailed description and is classified as Imaging and 3D rather than under the more abstract "unix & open source" label. http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/imaging_3d/inkscape.html However, since I submitted it, it is listed under my name (but links to www.inkscape.org). This is obviously wrong (I don't want people thinking that Inkscape is my project, by any means!) and I tried to correct it by adding "Inkscape Community" as my company name. I hope they will update the description soon. For 0.46, the best thing will probably be to open an Apple account under the name "Inkscape Community" and then I'll delete Inkscape from mine. Strings in python extensions

Has anyone noticed that the type=string variables passed to python extensions have literal quotes in them? For instance the number nodes (dots.py) example doesn't really work in the latest snapshot I downloaded because the sizes are getting set to things like '"20"' instead of just '20' --bb
