Extension execution on Windows crashes update

Some time ago we reported that executing extensions on Windows crashes Inkscape. Today I read the Bill Baxter was actually able to run some extension, so I tried again. The LaTeX extension still crashes, Path-along-path too. But the grid extension does not crash. Details: I am building Inkscape with a slightly modified build.xml so Inkscape always starts with a console window, to easily see debug info. I am going to try without console window now, to see whether that matters. In any case, execution of the grid extension did not spawn a new console window, nor did it pass focus to the already existing console. Later, Johan

CMYK imput problem

The CMYK color input behaves strangely: in the Fill and Stroke panel, when I try to change the color percentages in the CMYK tab by entering numbers on the right of the color mixers, these numbers are somehow recalculated on the fly and already entered amounts change. Here's an example: C 0 I change it into 44 M 27 jumps to 0 Y 61 jumps to 47 B 60 jumps to 71 And so on... It is almost impossible to input a CMYK color. Even entering CMYK color amounts with the help of the color sliders (for example MAGENTA) leads to subit changes in other colors (CYAN, YELLOW and BLACK). Molumen

Placment of guidelines

Hey Inkscapers! I've done some draft yesterday and was using guidelines, something I don't do very often... Well, first of all, I would like guidelines to be selectable and then placeble via the tool bar (everything but the x or y position should be greyed out). However, if this seems to hard to do, quickly, I think it would make sense to at least allow the same number of digest after the point in both, the guideline dialogue (currently 2) and the tool bar coordinates (currently 3, which I of course prefer). CMS color selection including CMYK

Well.... I was finally able to get the initial cut of supporting icc-color() in. It should support most color spaces including CMYK. At the moment it will only be active for colors with an icc profile already set. There are some problems with the Lab and YCbCr color spaces. So far I've tested RGB, CMYK and Grayscale successfully. To test just build the latest, have a <color-profile> in your SVG and set the color in the SVG. So if you have a <color-profile> element with a name attribute of "cmyk", then you would just need to set fill:#ff00ff icc-color(cmyk, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0)

Hi all, Most of you never use the win32 stuff. So you probably have never seen the build.dep file. This file is a list of dependencies for each .cpp file in the inkscape source tree. This is purely withing the Inkscape tree. Buildtool does not walk out to list the system dependencies. It can be quite interesting. Mesh Gradient export from Laidout

Hi, I've been working on an export of patch gradients (aka mesh gradients) from my program Laidout to SVG. It currently basically follows Bulia's approximation method here: http://inkscape.org/screenshots/gallery/inkscape-0.45-gradient-mesh-experim… The final steps of growing the boundary of the patch so the edges do not introduce transparency, and the blurring is a bit haphazard. My question is this: What is the relationship between "blur radius", the 0..100 blur slider in Inkscape, and SVG's stdDeviation? I've tried using various static values, but there doesn't seem to be a very satisfactory one. keys and mouse reference

I decided to remove the feature that I myself added several versions ago: keys and mouse reference as an SVG file. Since most Help menu items are now URL links, so is this one, linking to this version's current chart at: http://inkscape.org/doc/keys046.html The old SVG chart was not very convenient to use, and it was getting more and more difficult to fit all keys into one screen. The only problem with this change is that for now, we're losing translated version of the chart. However the only two translations were doc/keys.fr.xml and doc/keys.de.xml, both quite out of date. Announcing Raster Effects (via ImageMagick)

Dear fellow Inkscape users, My Google Summer of Code project is now in SVN. My project is "Raster Functionality in Inkscape," which involved integrating ImageMagick libraries into Inkscape, in order to manipulate bitmaps from inside Inkscape. You'll have to install ImageMagick with Magick++ support (which is default) in order for these new extensions to work. They can be accessed under the sub-menu "Raster" in the extensions drop-down menu. The code is not quite in its final state--I am still perfecting and smoothing it out--but it's functional and I'd love to get feedback from all of you, especially from Windows users (because I have not tested it on that OS yet). NEW: XSLT Input/output extension support

While it's been on my TODO list for a while, I finally realized how easy it was and finally did it. Using libxslt (which we already link to) Inkscape can now use XSLT stylesheets for input and output. (I thought about effects, is that useful to anyone?) I've also included into the build a couple of SVG stylesheets I was interested in: * AI SVG: cleans up Adobe SVG to only have in it the "good stuff" * XAML: Toine de Greef posted on his blog[1] a set of XSLT sheets to convert to and from SVG and XAML. What's really exciting to me about this is that they might be usable to finally bring SVG to IE using Silverlight[2] (at least what XAML supports). But, I think this makes Inkscape the first XAML editor outside of Expression. More are out there. Hi, What are your feelings about documentation of Inkscape? Do you think we still need an official user guide that would be available from our main website just like tutorials (in multiple langauges)? I'm kinda worried about it, because 0.46 will introduce practically all possible SVG filters and there is just no user friendly documentation on them, at least in English (yes, even books on Adobe Illustrator I've seen do not cover them in any decent way, and W3C spec is way too "technical"). Currently we have some ongoing work in French version of the user guide and not much of it in the English version: http://inkscape.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/inkscape/user_manual/trunk/ Despite of it the situation isn't so bad, IMO. We have pretty detailed release notes that cover a lot of functionality. We could make at least good EN and FR user guides for upcoming 0.46. What I suggest is trying to do it in small steps: 1. Add both EN and FR user guides to main website in same way we add tutorials. 2. Make them updatable in same way we updated tutorials. 2. Sync them content-wise. 3. Add missing parts borrowing from release notes where required. This will raise some public interest and, hopefully, attract people willing to contribute (especially if we provide detailed description, how to do it, and define a place where people can meet and talk about docs). Then we can see if we can keep at least EN and FR versions in sync, which, when successful, will be a lot better than no (visible) official user guide at all. What do you think? Alexandre

Printing issue

Hi, A few days ago a bug was filed by a user, in which the printing area appears to get clipped or offset, see http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1796153&group_id=9… Is this a known bug? It looks quite serious/annoying to me, so it would be great if someone could have a look. I'm not at all familiar with the printing mechanisms. Diederik

Dead links on localized versions of Inkscape website

Hi, in the German version of the "mailing lists" section on www.inkscape.org (as well as in some other localized versions) there are dead links to the corresponding archives. The correct ones have a "text only" form like http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?forum=inkscape-devel However, some links still contain IDs, as in http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?forum_id=36054 Clicking on a link of the latter shape yields an error message from Sourceforge, "No forum found". Whoever is in charge of keeping these pages up to date may want to fix it. Should I submit a formal bug report, too? Thanks, Max

raster effects crashing

Hi, Following raster effects crash Inkscape here (Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon) on most recent SVN trunk: convolve shade wave raise And a couple of notes: 1. Do we really need flop effect since we can already flip raster images horizontally and vertically, while flop does it only horizontally and in a destructive way? 2. Types of noises in "Noise" effect are not translatable. 3. Names of channels in Channel and Level Channel effects are not tranlsatable. 4. Does Threshold actually work? I tried it on several images but didn't see any effect whatever value I specified (0-100). 5. Should raster effects probably provide some hints to tell range of possible values for each variable? 6. We seem to use "Variable: [value]" convention in GUI, but no (boh raster and path) effect uses ":" after name of variable. Should it be fixed? Alexandre

Upgrading the MingW pack

Hi, I'm running into a couple of problems with the MingW pack right now. My main problem is that if you look at mingw\i686-pc-mingw32\include\windef.h you'll see on line 12 that WINVER is #defined as 0x0400 which indicates that the version of the Windows SDK is very old - that WINVER value corresponds to NT 4.0! This is a little troublesome for me because there are some newer APIs which I need to be able to use, and I'd like to use them without defining home-brew versions of those APIs. So is there any scope for upgrading to a more modern version of the SDK? Thanks Joel

issue with .dxf

Hi! First of all, sorry for my bad english, I'm french! I have an issue with inkscape 0.45.1 download in inkscape.org Indeed I use this software to make some documents with the extension dxf. Then these are used with the software robomaster. But when I save my document as a dxf doc, the dos window appears (black with nothing written) and then dissapear (normal by now) But it seems that this step is not well done because after robomaster is not able to upload my dxf doc. Moreover, all dxf documents have all the same capacity" that is to say 76 octets, even if documents are differents (text or picture) Have you heard something like that before? and have the solution?? Dockable dialogs, todo list

Thanks for all bug reports, comments and wishes regarding the dockable dialogs I've received in the last weeks! To sum it up, here's my todo list for the time to come: TODO (in no specific order) --------------------------- * Allow in-dock dialogs to be expanded even if there's no "slack". (I've got it kind of functional, but needs some more work). * Force GtkPaned to pass on F6 and F8 (i.e. those shortcuts can't be used now when the dock is displayed). * Make all the functionality provided by dialog-events.cpp work with the new dialogs. Perhaps by moving it into the Dialog class. This will lead a bit of to code duplication as long as there are "old" dialogs around, which is bad, on the other hand it allows the code to be C++-ified, which is good. * Tackle the problems with dockable dialogs and multiple desktops, i.e. the Dialog manager redesign. * Scroll dock to display docked dialogs when requested, and needed. * Remove old, obsolete object-properties dialog (a.k.a "Fill & Stroke"). Add methods for setting a specific tab in the new F&S. * Manage the Swatches dialog with the dialog manager, like any other dialog. * Fix minor problem with switching focus directly to dialog docked in main window, when a floating dialog have focus. Also give focus to a dialog that is deiconified. * Fix all GDL runtime warnings. * Fix all GDL compile time warnings. * See if anything can be done about the clashing mnemonic accelerators, i.e. allow them to be context sensitive for dialogs. * Add any (if any) major, user visible problem from above that didn't get fixed to "Known problems" sections in the release notes. Wish list (in no specific order) -------------------------------- * Add a "iconify/minimize all" button and bind a shortcut to it. * Pan/zoom drawing depending on dock size, behavior toggled by the current "Zoom drawing if window size changes" button. * Allow dock to "start" from menu bar instead of toolbar (and thereby giving it more space), by adding an option in "options.dock". * Add another, horizontal, docking area. Potentially hard if we wan't dialogs to be dragged and dropped between the docks. I might have missed something, please tell if there's something crucial that needs to be fixed before the code freeze that's not already on the TODO list. -- Gustav

Live effect preview

Thanks for adding the checkbutton Ted! But still, (all) effects crash for me on WinXP. Now that I have checked the "live preview" box, I get instant crashes when opening any effect dialog. So I cannot even uncheck the box to make inkscape work :( Could you perhaps add a #define to disable live preview on windows until it works? Does this crash for all Windows users? Or only for me? No, I mean select it with the selection and transformation tool (F1), the Trace Bitmap has to have a target bitmap selected to trace use the above tool to select it then trace bitmap. Joshua L. G'day guys, Someone new has started here in Brisbane who comes from a heavy illustrator background. During her first day using Inkscape she's written up this short document mentioning her initial reactions. a good quote to summarize: "I can find this stuff out by reading the manual. I'm just telling you what isn't immediately apparent enough as I feel like it ought to be." ------------------ Becc's Inkscape Hassles -------- Magnification in/out buttons: Wanting to zoom out, I hit the button showing the magnifying glass with a minus sign on it, then clicked on the page several times waiting for it to zoom out the same way it does when you've clicked on the button showing the magnifying glass with + sign on it. It didn't, but instead zoomed in. These buttons shouldn't imply they offer in/out aspects of the same tool but not behave consistently with this implication. Zoom level indication: The level of magnification indicator down beneath my work is out of whack with the zoom tools being up in the menu above it: I don't expect to hit a button on one menu and have to look to a field on another one to see the changes it's effected. At the time that I performed the above zooming in and out, I had nothing on my page and was zoomed in to a level where I couldn't see the edges of the page. As such, I was wanting feedback letting me know that my actions were having some kind of effect. (I expected this to be zooming me out, which turned out not to be the case – I was still zooming in, as mentioned – but any feedback would've been helpful in letting me know this button wasn't working as expected and that I should thus adjust my approach.) Ditto with the related shortcuts: I can hit Shift++ but not Shift+-, which is inconsistent. I can use a scrollbar to move my view horizontally but not vertically. Makes moving my focus difficult. (NB: I later worked out I can scroll up and down using the mouse wheel; okay, but having a scrollbar for only one kind of pan when both kinds of pans are possible is inconsistent and leads one to believe, as I did earlier, that only one kind of panning is possible – otherwise, surely both would be represented onscreen in the same way, y'know? Also, what do you do if you don't have a wheel mouse?) I'm not sure what to hold down to create a perfect circle. I seem to have managed it accidentally by holding down Shift one time, holding down Ctrl another time, and holding both together another time, but none of these seem to create a perfect circle consistently: in each case switching to an oval occurs if I'm not very careful about where I'm dragging my pointer while I have the appropriate key/s held down. If I want to select nodes, I seem to not only have to use the "node edit" tool but must first select the entirety of the object(s) the nodes are a part of in order to be able to do so. This slows me down by adding in a step that doesn't seem necessary or logical. It also took me some time to work out that the problem wasn't simply that the node selection tool doesn't work – I really only kept trying because I knew from having created that teardrop shape when you were standing there assisting me that nodes could be selected and edited somehow – which is going to present to potential converts from, er, say, Illustrator, as bugginess and incompleteness. Please let me rotate my object as easily as I can resize it, without opening the Transform menu. Sometimes I don't know how many degrees I want to rotate it, and sometimes I just want to turn it 'round 'til it looks about right, so need to be able to wiggle it around experimentally. :) So, I'm beginning to form an idea of this program (and point this out in the assumption that any user will do similarly) as having not just paths with nodes like Illustrator does, but also having something called "objects" that fit into all of this somewhere. My immediate difficulty with that is this: I'm working at present with a shape that's made up of a path. However I wouldn't know it to look at it when selected, because the fact that it has a path outlining it isn't readily apparent unless I not only select it but double-click on it. I don't recall having to ever double click on something to edit it. Is showing its path possible with just one click (also, can I see the wire line of the path rather than just the nodes on it when I do so? I can't make out the shape of what I'm working on when it's over/under an object of the same colour!)? Could doing this perhaps serve also to allow the user to easily see what's a shape and what's a path? As it is, I'm still having difficulties conceptualising what the building blocks of this program are (which is important because they're what I'm going to use to develop my drawings etc as a user), and I wonder if making the differences between the two more readily discernable might assist in getting that across... Is the node edit tool the only way I can alter a line once I've drawn it? I'm accustomed to being able to select it and alter it with the pencil – particularly when I'm using a graphics tablet, this is my preferred method of working, cuz it makes using a computer to draw just like using a pencil and paper. :( I've hit a numeral a few times when meaning to type something or enter a size or angle of a rotation into a text field and instead found my view suddenly changed. This isn't a bug – I've obviously had the focus in a place other than where I thought it was – but a suggestion that the numbers on the keyboard not be used to change the view without the use of the Ctrl or Shift key consistent with usual shortcut behaviour. Fill and Stroke colours are taking up so much real estate in their respective menus that they shouldn't need. I know you're trying to supply optimum control, but I'm being overwhelmed by details here when all I want is to select an appropriate shade of pink to colour the pieces of my exploded brains. Clicking on a colour swatch on the main screen shouldn't open up a menu offering me options to choose between fill, stroke, and stroke style, and then (once I've worked out that I should stay inside the 'fill' tab of that menu) decide between what kind of fill, whether I want to use RGB or CMYK or Pantone, the colour(s) amongst those I want to use, etc, all at once. I just want to change the colour. Wouldn't it make more sense when I click on a swatch of colour to open up a menu offering me only colour options? Sure, the colour is an attribute of a background; so offer the other background options in the menu's other (unfocused) tabs – not options having to do with strokes or stroke style. As with the Fill option, the Stroke options are taking up a lot of space because they're providing a lot of detail I don't immediately need if I'm just clicking on, say, a swatch (in which case I want to change the colour), or on a I can't seem to shift objects up and down within a layer. Does this mean that if I don't want to employ layers for something that before I start drawing I need to think about the order in which I need to draw objects, starting from the bottom up? :-/ Er... I can't scroll left to right using that scroll bar I mentioned earlier! I can't remember if it was working then; it certainly isn't now. Joining two path ends together would be handy – something I use all the time When I try to copy a style using the eyedrop tool, as an Illustrator user I'm expecting both fill and stroke to be applied to the object I'm working with. At the moment I'm getting only fill. Since I do have the whole object selected and not just its fill, I'm not finding any logical reason why both fill and stroke settings shouldn't be getting copied over. ------------

If we keep it as an external dependency, someone else maintains it. Hi Gustav, some glitches and questions as of rev 16035: Docked dialogs don't scroll to be visible when I call them, if the dock contains many dialogs scrolled down. Is this fixable? Hightlighting the title of the dialog which was just called by a shortcut is nice, but it does little else - the keyboard focus is still not in the dialog. Or at least, I can't use Tab to travel between widgets in the dialog as I was able in the dialog as a top-level window - Tab works to select object on canvas no matter what. On the other hand, the accelerator keys (underlined in labels) work indiscriminately across all dialogs and all UI in general. For example, select an object, open fill&stroke and switch to HSL tab, then press Alt+H. The first time, the Help menu is opened; the second time, focus jumps to the H field in the dialog. This is a really bad problem - few people use accelerators in dialogs but many call menus by Alt+letter, so this needs to be fixed somehow. Is it possible to limit the scope of the accelerators to the dialog only, so that they only work when some widget in the dialog has focus? By the way, if I can highlight the dialog with its shortcut, it would be logical if it was also highlighted when I click some widget in it, or just click on its title bar. Is this feasible? Press Ctrl+Shift+W - the swatches dialog pops up. Press it again and you get "** Message: Failed to find an existing dialog". Works with other dialogs but not this one. Is it possible to not show the separators between dialogs in the dock with resize handles when resizing is not possible? This is misleading. Open several dialogs, then open fill&stroke, iconify it, then restore. It works but I get in the console: (inkscape:3948): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: value "-313" of type `gint' is invalid or out of range for property `preferred-height' of type `gint' Now that you've replaced them, can you remove the obsolete fill&stroke code from src/dialogs? Note that the selected-style.cpp calls sp_object_properties_fill and sp_object_properties_stroke, which open the old (non-gtkmm) dialog and switch to the corresponding tab. As you may have noticed from an earlier email, I'm more or less back from all that wedding stuff. The ceremony was wonderful and the honeymoon trip to the Dominican Republic really fun! Email me if you want to see some photos and I'll send some links. So now down to business. School is ramping up, but it looks good to be able to spend some time every week looking at Inkscape. Which is good, because I have several loose ends to take care of. I am aware of the funky newline behaviour that a few of you have logged bugs on. That will be my first priority. Once that's ironed out, I will be cleaning up my last patch from SoC. Finally, once that's checked in and working, I will finish the end goal with that code, namely sorting out the UI lists to be what we want and looking into Pango limitations with those folks. No idea how long that will all take, but will be definitely making a good effort to get the most urgent stuff done as soon as I can. Cheers, Gail

Hi, I have a very tough question, so feel free to punch me for that one :) What do we actually plan to do with Object Properties palette? It looks like it wasn't touched for ages. Recently I had a talk with a newbie user and he told me that he expected seing there more properties, both "global" and "specific". In that particular case he couldn't figure out how to change amount of an already created polygon's sides and he expected to see that in Object Properties palette. Then there was another feature request to make it possible choosing what properties of selected objects can be changed. E.g. in a selection of 25 objects you can have 12 objects which should not lose either fill or stroke or opacity or any specific for this type of objects property or any combination of the above, when you change it for the whole group. And as you know ;-) Inkscape, unlike Scribus, doesn't store changes per object within a session, so you can't aply changes to a group and then undo it for individual objects. So the second part of the question is whether we can make a better use of the Object Properties palette. In addition to what there already is in that palette we could add two groups of options: 1. Global options, i.e. Fill, Stroke, Opacity, Filters. 2. Specific options, i.e. the ones from tools options toolbar. For selections with multiple objects of different types (e.g. 2 stars and 3 rectangles) specific options would be greyed out. Each option would have a checkbox to allow/forbid changes to it, with 3 positions: yes, no, fuzzy (when at least two of the selected objects have different values, gtk supports it). Hello im not really used to write in dev Lists, i even cant read source code :o) OK i have a Problem and maybe a Bugreport, so see im an not that much advanced User (like at my english, it says everythin :o) Id load today Inkscape, to try out, my aim is it to Trace or Vectorize ,or how ever its called in english, an Bitmap or better an Gif Image. My first Step is it to Import it, then i open the Option "Bitmap Vectorize" (i use it in German, so .....) and after i choose all my preferences i click on action, but it seams like nothing hapens. Id search and look at all manuals ( like i should do :o) did wait for over 10 Min. but, guess what, yeah nothin happens. So i dont know if i do some wrong and when it is like that i really cant expect what it could be. OK, Im using Mac OS X, 10.4.10 on an Intel Mac, yeah i know its running under X11 and i have to wait, but it starts up pretty fast. I really dont even know if its the right Place to talk about that, but i hope so, if not exuse my please, but tell me tahn to where it would be. I dont know if i have to make a mention on this, but if you guys need to test something or need feedback how or if it runs (and you tell me how to do :o) I will help and do as far i can, cause im pretty thankfull that you do such a great job and i would do my part as i could to........ Hi, According to 0.46 release notes we now use Gtk 2.10+ printing dialog. However, the --with-gnome-print option is still present in ./configure script and doesn';t actually work: http://pastebin.ca/696577 Do we really need gnome-print integration now? And a more difficult question: will gtk provide us color managed printing whenever color management is implemented in Inkscape? Alexandre

Please do not mark empty string as translatable

Hi, I just commited rev16059, basically doing s/_("")/("")/ where due. It looks like some developers are used to leave some labels/tooltips/strings empty, but mark them as translatable. This already surfaced on -translator some times ago (see [1]), but I was heavily bitten again today, so I fixed it. Basically gettext has a bad behaviour wrt empty strings, and it replaces them with the .po header. Inkscape native on OS X... almost

hello all, Motivated by all the good things I saw about gtk on os x these days and repulsed by all the statistics I should be doing for my real life work, I gave a try at compiling inkscape with GTK native using MacPorts (so not using the all in one build script that Michael cook up a little while ago). MacPorts is the OS X equivalent of apt-get, portage, yum or whatever. We use it to provide Inkscape dependencies currently and it is very convenient to compile Inkscape that way. It is both easy (all second level dependencies are managed by macports) and economic (the libraries I compile for inkscape can be used in other projects). I wanted to keep this ease of use and to leverage the work of others, so I wanted to keep using MacPorts. The steps: 1- MacPorts includes native versions of gtk and cairo, which can be installed with: port install cairo +quartz gtk2 +quartz (gentoo and bsd users will recognize the "variants" switches added to both packages). there is a small bug in gtk which is known and solved by the patches in this ticket, at MacPorts: http://trac.macports.org/projects/macports/ticket/12566 hopefully they will commit this soon... but the bug report is quite old already. 2- Other libraries compiled against gtk or cairo need to be recompiled to use these new variants. namely: port -f uninstall cairomm gtkmm pango port install cairomm gtkmm pango this could possibly be solved by a clever use of upgrade when compiling gtk2 and cairo but I did not bother (I should have though...) 3- then compile inkscape from fresh make distsclean cd packaging/macosx/ change the compilation options to remove "--enable-osx-app" for now and then update, configure, build and install: ./osx-build-sh u a c b i compilation goes smoothly for latest svn... great great great!!! Next step in supporting CMYK, etc, was to purge the paint enum type. Take a look to see if things are still holding up. The main reason is that we're getting to support proper SVG paint, not just the union/enum subset. That is, a paint could have both a URL and a normal color part specified, or a URL, a normal color part *and* an icc-color...

Toggling dialogs by keyboard shortcuts

Hi, some time ago I thought it would be nice if dialogs could be _toggled_ (as opposed to only be shown) by their corresponding keyboard shortcuts. This is especially true with the new dockable dialogs (great improvement, by the way, in case I haven't mentioned it yet :)) because they don't respond to Ctrl+W any more so that they closing them is only possible by using mouse clicks, not the keyboard alone. I tried to implement toggling but have two small questions: - What is the right entry point in the code? Should this be done in the DialogManager::showDialog() function? In this case, is there already a way to test whether a Dialog is currently visible, or do I need to add a new boolean variable to the Dialog class? - When a dialog is invoked for the very first time after startup, it seems to be present()-ed more than once so that a check for the dialog's visibility wrongly indicates that it is already being shown (thus in order to initially show a dialog, its corresponding shortcut needs to be pressed twice, which is annoying and inconsistent). What is the reason for this? And is there a less cumbersome way to circumvent it than introducing yet another boolean variable just to check whether the dialog was already shown before? I added three buttons for Select all, Select all in all layers, and Deselect to the start of the Selector's control bar. I think they are quite relevant there (at least more relevant than the z-order buttons) and are quite often used functions, especially now that with the Tweak tool you often need to select everything indicscriminately. -- bulia byak Inkscape. Gradient bug.

Hi, I was lately monitoring gradient look and I must say in latest build it looks very good (as good as in illustrator or gimp). I was playing with inkscape build form 6 sep and I found bug with gradient. When I was preparing gradient for mask I found that gradient is cut on bottom (about 10% of gradient was cut). Hi Folks, I've been using the advice on the inkscape/eclipse page, http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Using_Eclipse using Linux, I have found it necessary to run: ./autoconf.sh, ./configure before a Makefile is generated which Eclipse is happy with. NEW: Dockable dialogs

I have now committed the patch [1],[2] I've been working on for quite some time. It gives Inkscape a dock panel right of the canvas on which dialogs can be docked. A part of an external library, GDL, has been included in the tree with this patch, this had to be done as GDL isn't widely available and the fact it demanded some Inkscape specific customizations. The good thing is that this implies that Inkscape's list of dependencies remains unchanged. The design of the dialog system allows the new dockable dialog behavior to exist along side the old floating dialogs behavior. If the old behavior is preferred, one can select it under Inkscape Preferences > Windows > Dialog behavior. Know issues ----------- * It doesn't work well with multiple open documents. Fixing it requires a bit of rewrite of the current dialog manager. I'll focus on doing this before the code freeze. * Resizing in-dock dialogs can be cumbersome. More specifically, one won't be able to expand a dialog placed in the dock unless all dialogs beneath it are expanded in advance. Fixing this requires some changes in GDL, I've got it somewhat working, but decided that it's still too flaky to commit in its current state. * Remembered positions of dockable floating dialogs is inexact. For me (using Metacity), I'm not able to get the exact position of dockable floating dialogs, the values I get are off by an unpredictable number of pixels. Could be related to the problems described here: http://www.gtk.org/api/2.6/gtk/GtkWindow.html#gtk-window-get-position * Compiler warnings. Including GDL in the tree introduced a lot of compiler warnings. They're not serious, but it looks bad... Note that this change only applies to gtkmm:ified dialogs, i.e. dialogs that subclass UI::Dialog. I've gtkmm:ified "Fill & Stroke" and with this change, that version is now default. Dialogs left to be gtkmm:ified are the "XML Editor", "Tiled Clones", "Object Properties" (though it's about to be removed/replaced IIRC), "Text and Font". The "Find" dialog has been gtkmm:ified by Johan but is disabled by default as it needs testing (please help). There's been a lot of great changes (image magik stuff, tweaking, dockable dialogs ....) - since there may not be an official release for several months - what about a more or less stable tarball (and maybe ubuntu pkg) - for many users to try out and give feedback - akin to a Ubuntu alpha release.

Inkscape has a default theme on OS X

Hello everyone, As of revision 16000 (yes I like round numbers, I think I also did commit number 15000!), development versions of Inkscape have a default GTK theme on OS X (no more of these ugly dark grey windows!) It is probably impossible for GTK to reproduce Aqua exactly, hence the theme does not aim at being an Aqua clone as other themes tried (and in my opinion, did not succeed). It rather tries to "fit" correctly with the rest of the interface. The theme is based on Clearlooks-Quicksilver which already features light gray colors, menu and text highlights and a smooth 3D feel. Further improvements were added such as: - aqua scroll-bars - Lucida Grande font - highlight and scroll-bars colors that use Mac OS X Appearance settings (aqua vs graphite, or blue vs grey vs graphite vs...). However you need to restart Inkscape for colors to change after you changed them in OS X preferences. In addition, Inkscape won't override the local theme preferences you may have in a ~/.gtkrc-2.0 file (so if you want to see the theme in Inkscape, temporarily move this file somewhere else). Inkscape is a staff pick at Apple downloads

Hello everyone, Looking for something else I just passed cross this on Apple's site: Inkscape is marked as staff pick by Apple currently. http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/unix_open_source/index_sp.html I don't remember that it was before so that's great news, given that the interface is X11 (which Mac users typically don't like), and not very pretty by default (which mac users usually care much about). However it seems to be a little lower in the most downloaded counts: it was in top 10 and is now 17. http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/unix_open_source/index_top.html But no doubt that the 0.46 release will bring all that up. Congratulations anyway. I've some GTK themes which look OK when integrated with OS X. Now if someone could tell me how to use GTK2_RC_FILES I'll be glad to try and use them in Inkscape. "make check" tests

Guys, We need people to start running "make check" again, and trying to keep things up to date. If invoked from the src directory, it can check the main code without running through some of the other things such as translations. Anyway, I just fixed style-test.h so that the tests should compile again. Running it does show a lot of problems with attributes, though.

I have successfully built from svn sources many times before, but the last time I did pre-dated the existence of the ocaldialogs.h file. autogen.sh and configure both run fine and don't detect any problems. Hi Johan, Not only does it crash when starting from within gdb, but also when I start Inkscape directly, without trying to debug it. I guess I was not clear on that. If it were only a gdb issue then I probably wouldn't have bothered ;-). It would be great to know whether it's reproducible, or maybe you are able to get a backtrace. You're programming on Windows, right? I'll try the file on my linux-machine at home and see where it leads to. The file will be sent in a separate mail to you personally, I'd rather not have it published on the mailing list as it's somewhat confidential. Crash on Win XP, cannot get backtrace

Hi, On opening one of my own recent Inkscape SVG files on my Windows XP machine at work, Inkscape apparently gets stuck in a loop (100% CPU usage). When I subsequently click on its main window, it crashes. It looks like it is stuck while redrawing the screen, as I can see part of my desktop and part of my SVG file. When starting through gdb however it also gets stuck, but it won't crash. How do I get some useful information from gdb to help debugging? Currently, I only have "unknown software exception 0xc00000fd" at "0x672ddbd9". I'm running Inkscape0709022056, as provided by ishmal. Diederik

menus

Hi, With lots of additions overal last year menus become quite busy. A couple of observations. 1. We have both "Effects - Images" and "Effects - Raster" menus. Do we keep "Images" submenu for any possible effect not altering contents of raster images or just embedding/disembedding? If it's emdedding related only, should we probably then rename submenu? btw, I'm not really sure that the current way of dealing with embedding/exporting raster files in SVG document really optimal. See, opening an arbitrary file I can't tell if an image used there is embedded or not without looking into source code.There's no indicator to tell that. An improved hint in status bar could probably be the first step in the right, IMO, direction. Something like "Embedded image A x B size in layer N" and "External image A x B size in layer N". What do you think? 2. Text case altering commands live in "Effects - Text". Should it probably belong to "Text" menu? As user of applications like Scribus or OpenOffice.org (sorry, Scribus guys :)) I don't perceive those as effects --- this is rather altering of text that its look'n'feel. Same goes for "Replace text..." --- to me it rather belongs to "Edit" or "Text" menu, not speaking about some kind of clash with "Edit - Find...". Comments? :) Alexandre

Connecting to signals

I've had some struggle in signals and stuff. I found this in the code: _close_button.signal_clicked() .connect(sigc::mem_fun(*this, &LayerPropertiesDialog::_close)); (dialogs/layer-properties.cpp) Why is this connection not saved? Is that not necessary? It seems to me that this is buggy. When the layer window is deleted, the connection is not disconnected and when the signal is emitted it will call _close with a corrupt "this" value. (this will never happen probably because the button is on the dialog itself, but still) Thanks for some light on this, Johan P.S. Why is there a function signal_clicked() to get the signal? In my code I just make the sigc::signal public (see /ui/widget/random.h). Is that bad?

build break on 2geom change

It appears that as of tonight the build is broken due to a missing dependency. The update to the 2geom code brought in a dependance on gsl. If someone could look into that and then update configure.ac with a check for the needed version, that would be helpful. Just FYI, on a Mac here I have version 1.8.

Changing layer opacity affects other layers

I'm creating a set of amimated cursors which involves exporting each frame from Inkscape. One of the animations involves reducing the opacity of a number of layers for each frame. I'm finding when I change the opacity of one layer then select another layer this layers opacity will also change. Quite frustrating as I've exported the frames for an animation 5 times now and each time I've found there's been a mistake with opacity on a layer :) I'm not sure if the problem is related to the amount of time Inkscape takes to redraw the image after changing opacity - I think if I select the next layer before the redraw is finished the setting is carried across. I've used blur so the redraw can be a little slow. Odd size of imported bitmaps

Hello, I've imported a 400x400 pixel TIFF image into an inkscape drawing, and it comes out as 112.89 x 112.89 mm, which translates to a resolution of roughly 90 dpi. Where does this number come from? Shouldn't inkscape honour the dpi information that is embedded in the TIFF image? Alternatively, for images that don't have a "built-in" resolution, inkscape should ask for a "native" size of the image or use a changeable default resolution. Also I noticed that some imported images have width and height xml attributes while others don't. All this came to my attention when I worked with a SVG file with 20 imported images of about 10MB each (TIFF uncompressed) which bogged down my computer. I tried substitutung the TIFFs with scaled-down (by .25) working copies, which worked fine for those images that had width and height attributes (the others came out a fourth of the size), I'm just wondering how Inkscape arrives at the "native" size of an image, and I wanted to know if others agreed with my notion that in a vector drawing program the resolution of imported bitmaps was of high importance. It would also be nice if Inkscape could somehow reload image properties if the original bitmap had changed (by scaling or cropping, for instance). Thanks, --Dan

Hey Josh, (CC to devel) The pentool bug is a good one :), yep I only thought of using the node tool for editting paths doh! Stacking is definitely planned. But... at this moment it will not help you a lot. The problem is that the path-along-path effect has its inputs switched around: path-along-path: svgd input = path to put something along (can only be one path, probably cannot contain gaps or anything) parameter input = path to put along the other path The stacking will work like this (because this is simple to implement [1]): output of one effect goes to the *svgd input* of the next one. As you can see, this will not function as desired for stacking curve stitching and path-along-path. "So why is path-along-path made this way? It is also not handy for applying it to groups!" The problem now is that only the svgd input can be editted on-canvas. The parameter paths cannot. So imagine having that fish bend along a curve, and then not being able to nicely edit that curve :S On-canvas editting of path parameters has very high priority on my list, but it is not so easy. This curve stitching thing was really easy to implement (just look at the code), and it seemed fun :-) Cheers! Hi, I wonder why gradients in inkscape doesn't look smooth. When I look on them I see that they compose from regular lines. Can't gradients look so smooth like in photoshop or gimp ? --- Kind regards. Kobi.

I suspect that this is a bleeding edge problem, because the OCAL dialogs are under active development. Hopefully these problems will be resolved within a day or two (although you may be unlucky and run into some new ones - there's maybe 25% chance of that). Welcome to inkscape! Hello people, I've finally decided to take a jump into the cold water and fetch a SVN copy of inkscape. Don't know yet if I'm actually going to contribute or if I just want something to complain about. Anyway, make fails with some error (quoted below) and I'm wondering if I just happen to have fetched a broken bleeding-edge source tree, or if something else is going wrong. Maybe someone could point me at the latest version that built fine so I can "downgrade" to it via SVN. BTW, I know what the error means; it's just that I'd like to start out with a known-good source tree rather than trying to hunt down errors in an unknown project. #inkscape-user-support channel

There are many users that come on #inkscape irc channel to ask user questions. Wouldn't it be more appropriate to open another channel for user questions? That way we (users) will not bother developers if they don't want to be disturbed. And questions will be more on-topic that way. We can then track down frequent FAQ and move them to inkscape wiki. Of course providing basic informations to newly appeared users where to find documentation - like wiki, address of faq, location of keybindings file etc. Thanx in advance, Vlada

Slower snapping between 0.45 and devel

Hello everyone, I noticed a non negligible difference in responsiveness between Inkscape 0.45 and current devel version on a "complex" (4000 objects) drawing... in the wrong way unfortunately (current devel is slower than 0.45). Since disabling snapping altogether in devel remedies to the slowness I think it involves snapping. I tried to test both version with the same parameters and selected these options (and only these): 0.45 snap nodes to objects snap to objects paths snap sensitivity 10 devel snap nodes snap to paths snap sensitivity 10 And the devel version is still slower than the released version. In fact it will hang for a little while (like 1-2 sec with 100% CPU usage) before first moving the objects, subsequent movements being a little bit faster (but still slower than 0.45). NEW: four more modes in Tweak tool

Of the four new modes, two are for editing path shapes (Attract and Repel) and two are for coloring objects (Color Paint and Color Jitter) . I also renamed Melt to Shrink and Inflate to Grow as discussed before. * The Attract and Repel modes work by moving each affected point on a path towards (Attract) or from (Repel) the cursor point. In some cases this may look similar to Shrink and Grow, but the difference is that shrinking/growing moves paths perpendicularly to the path in each point, whereas attracting/repelling moves them to or from the cursor regardless of the path shape. These modes are similar to the Pinch effect in ; you can use them for various central-symmetric distortions in parts of your paths. Color-changing modes The Color Paint and Color Jitter modes, unlike the path editing modes, change the colors of objects instead of their shapes. Yet they share enough common features with the path-changing modes to be part of the same tool: These modes also use a circular soft-edged brush controlled by the Width and Force parameters on the Controls bar and affected by the pen pressure (if you have a pressure-sensitive tablet). * Color Paint applies the style of the tool to the selected objects under the brush. The style of the tool is visible in the style swatch at the rightmost end of the tool's control bar; it can be changed by clicking on the color palette or by any other style assignment command, such as Fill and Stroke dialog. (Note: unlike all other tools, in Tweak tool in Color Paint mode you cannot assign style directly to selected objects; any style-setting command changes the tool's style instead.) The fill from the tool's style applies to the fills of the painted objects, and the stroke applies to the strokes. If the tool's style has no fill or no stroke, it won't affect fills or strokes, correspondingly. For example, if you want to color the fills of objects blue but leave their strokes untouched, assign blue fill to the tool's style (just click blue on the palette) but set its stroke to None (middle-click the Stroke swatch in the statusbar). Similarly, master opacity in the tool's style This mode allows you to literally paint over objects, shifting their colors towards the target style of the tool. For example, if you paint with yellow fill over a blue-filled object, the object will become greenish blue, then green, then yellowish green, and end up being exactly the green color you're painting with. This speed of this gradual transition depends on the Force and pen pressure; also, objects touched by the periphery of the brush are less affected than those hit by the brush center. Overall, using this tool is very similar to a soft brush in a raster editor such as Gimp or Photoshop. * Color Jitter mode does not apply any color, but instead jitters (randomizes) the colors of the objects it touches. The force of the action determines how strong is the randomization, i.e. how far the colors deviate from the original values. This mode does not use the tool's style. Both modes work on flat fills and gradients; for gradients, the tool takes into account not only the position of the entire object with gradient, but also the position of each gradient stop relative to the brush. This means that, for example, you can change the blue color only in an object filled with blue-red gradient simply by painting over its blue end with a brush small enough to not touch the red. Channels Color Paint and Color Jitter honor the Channels control. This control comprises the four buttons: H, S, L, and O, which allow you to turn on and off the tool's action on the object's hue, saturation, lightness, and opacity, correspondingly. For example, if you want to raise the saturation of some part of your drawing without changing the hue, select some maximum-saturation color (e.g. pure red) and turn off all Channels buttons except S. Similarly, you can replace the hues without affecting saturation or lightness (only H pressed), or lighten/darken all colors without changing their hues and saturation (only L pressed). Pressing O allows you to apply the master opacity from the tool's style to the master opacity of objects (but not fill or stroke opacity). Usage notes Color painting with Tweak tool is similar, but not exactly analogous to bitmap painting. Even though the tool itself works as a soft brush, it still applies its color to vector objects, which behave as vector objects usually do. For example, if you want to change the tint of the face in your drawing, and if a hand in the drawing is part of the same object as the face, that hand will change its tint too even if it's located far from the point you are painting. (We foresee a "fracture" command in one of the next versions of Inkscape which will help you turn a monolithic object into a mosaic of small fragments that will be then easy to paint with Tweak tool.) Still, even with this limitation, color painting is a novel way of dealing with vector drawings which allows you to quickly and intuitively make adjustments which would be awkward and slow with traditional approach. Drawings containing patterns or scatterings of small independent objects are best suited for color painting with Tweak tool. Examples include: * freehand drawings with Calligraphy pen, consisting of many separate strokes; * gradient meshes imported from Adobe Illustrator files (Inkscape renders these meshes as lattices of small polygons; while there's no direct support for gradient meshes in Inkscape yet, color painting on such lattices is almost as good); * text converted to paths and with Break Apart command applied so that each letter is a separate path; * patterns made with the Tile Clones command; note that you need to unset the fill and/or stroke on the original object and use the Color tab to assign some initial color to the clones - this will make them paintable with the Tweak tool without unlinking. Moreover, color tweaking can be useful for compositions with a few objects or even for single objects. Unlike all other color selection methods, painting with the Tweak tool implements the color mixing metaphor which is much more familiar to traditional artists than RGB sliders or even the color wheel. For example, start with a rectagle of pure blue color; then, pick different colors by Color Paint and apply light touches with minimum Force and minimum pen pressure: add a little green, a little brown, a little yellow, etc. until you have the exact hue you need. Similarly, you can whiten or blacken any hue by admixing white or black. You can also use color tweaking to add a tint, darken/lighten, saturate/desaturate, or color jitter your entire drawing. Just select all in all layers, zoom out, choose a large brush width so it covers all of the drawing, and apply a little color tweaking (with minimum Force) that will therefore affect all visible objects. -- bulia byak Inkscape. Alt-mouse

An awful lot of Inkscape's functions (I notice that the new touch selection is another one) seem to be relying on the alt-key being held down and various things done with the mouse. To say that this is a pain under Linux is an understatement since alt-mouse is used by window managers to allow quick manipulation of window sizes and positions, which is vital on large screens. Given that Inkscape is only one app and alt-mouse is effectively in use by every other app on the system for something else, is there any easy way to change these shortcuts to something like meta-mouse or something (anything!) else? Is it the case that most Inkscape developers are using Windows and are simply not aware of how difficult these alt-mouse shortcuts make it for Linux users? Thomas Worthington

LPE crashes

I have just played with LPE and I found two ways to crash Inkscape (current SVN trunk). The first way: - draw circle - do *not* convert it to path - select that circle and copy it (ctrl+c) - draw line using freehand tool and select it - press ctrl+shift+7 - press 'Apply' - click on 'Paste' icon The second way: - draw circle - convert it to path - select that circle and copy it (ctrl+c) - draw line using freehand tool and select it - press ctrl+shift+7 - press 'Apply' - click on 'Paste' icon - press ctrl+z (undo) Hope it will be helpful :) -- lapnect

I havn't had the chance to watch the video yet, but would something like snap targets work. Let me explain. Targets would be a symbol that appear on viable snap positions I imagine it as a bullseye that appear as soon as you start dragging a node.When you get near a target the it changes from red to green to indicate where its snapping to probably not the best colors for colorblind people but you get the idea. You even as far as different shapes for different snap types. Small coloured squares/dots for grid snaps. Bullseye/circle coloured for nodes I'm not sure to do for line maybe just highlight it. and of course since this is inkscape an option or key combo to toggle them on and off. Joshua L. Improvements in filtering framework

I committed (actually a week ago) some improvements in filtering framework. The main part of this improvement is the new NR::FilterUnits class, which provides tools for handling different coordinate systems in filters. Another big part is moving code for preparing pixblocks from NR::Filter to NR::FilterSlot, where it more conveniently belongs. This means, that now all pixblocks a filter primitive can receive are in same coordinate system. (this fixes bug #1768003) Filter primitives can affect, what this coordinate system is, by overriding the get_input_traits function. Example from gaussian blur: FilterTraits FilterGaussian::get_input_traits() { return TRAIT_PARALLER; } At the moment, the only other possibility is TRAIT_ANYTHING, which is the default, and specifies that filter doesn't care, what the coordinate system is like. (feBlend and feComposite are like this, for example) TRAIT_PARALLER means, that x- and y-axis of the object must be paraller to x- and y-axis of the input image. For example, feGaussianBlur requires this, as the deviation is specified along object x- and y-axis. Only FilterGaussian has this implemented now, it should be implemented in other filters, that need it. I made it use bitfields and called it traits, because I think that this can have a wider use. For example, many filters need 32-bit RGBA images with premultiplied alpha as inputs. We could specify this as trait and move the handling code from the filter primitives to FilterSlot. Also, I'm thinking, that Filter::render and FilterPrimitive::render should be changed to take FilterUnits as an input instead of Matrix. This would give these functions more tools to figure out, where things should be placed, how large the affected area should be, where the bounding box corners are etc. Helper functions for calculating distances, transforming points from user coordinates to image coordinates etc. can also be added to FilterUnits, so that they don't need to be implemented in filter primitives. -- Niko Kiirala

Tango Icons

I was reading the release notes for the upcoming GIMP release (http://gimp.org/release-notes/gimp-2.4.html ), and I noticed that they are updating their icon set to one that adheres to the tango guidelines. I was wondering what everyone thinks about using the inkscape tango icons set(http://gnomelook.org/content/show.php/Tangofied+inkscape+icons+set?conte nt=48140 ) as default. I know that the current revision of this icon set is incomplete in some parts (eg: Tweak and Bucket Fill.) Just thought I would throw the idea out there. Cheers, ryanlerch

Hi Guys, Just thought with the SoC over it might be a good time to start thinking about release schedules again, or at least discussing them. Seems like a lot of fun stuff in the SVN build that people want to get their hands on and with the SoC deadline past locking down HEAD shouldnt be as much of an issue. Gradients and Pattern Libraries

After a discussion in the IRC channel about gradients and patterns, i have a few queries about them: 1. Do the inkscape/share/patterns and inkscape/share/gradients actually do anything in Inkscape yet? 2. Is there anyone planning to create code for a gradients or pattern library in inkscape, so they can be browsed and imported into the current document. 3. Question: are there any plans to make a python lib2geom interface? I've had a really nifty idea for an extension, but it requires bezier curves to be loaded from stock SVG files, and then I need to be able to solve the beziers in X for a given Y coordinate. [can lib2geom even do this?]

Otherwise, if it's instrusive, it must provide some really basic and important facility in order to be considered. The slicing facility is important for many people, check. But doing it via "magic slices" is very intrusive and non-orthogonal because it involves a whole new kind of objects and/or controls that all tools will need to be aware of - no check. Then when you need to export it, just set its transparency to 0. Minimum clicks to get what you need, and you can still click to select the slices. What's wrong with this? Difficult to set up? Just provide a template with that semitransparent "slices" layer already present. Difficult to discover? Write and popularize a tutorial. Cannot batch export the slices? Yes you can, in SVN this is added right to the Export dialog (the "export selected objects separately" checkbox). I can even easily add another checkbox there: export all within the object's bbox but not the object itself - and then you will not need to make the boxes transparent, because they will be hidden in the export anyway. Or, we can eventually support per-layer Outline view (this was already requested by other people for other purposes), which, if enabled for the export layer, will solve all of your problems at once: rects will be always visible and clickable even if transparent. And we can even enable per-layer outline color to differentiate them visually. Need more intuitive manipulation of the slices? Excellent suggestion, just implement the rect-specific commands for "subdivide horizontally", "subdivide vertically", and "rectangle union" on the Rect toolbar, and fix the KnotHolder so it can edit more than one selected rect (e.g. by dragging the touching sides of two adjacent rects) - and editing the slices will be a breeze, not to mention all the other benefits you get from these improvements. See? Every convenience you can think of is easily possible with the simple approach, just by extending the capabilities of existing tools. And the big advantage is that these extensions may be useful in various other situations too. Calligraphy width - can you guess what I'm going to say? :)

I did a search for this because I thought it would have been brought up many times - but I couldn't find anything. I don't understand the benefit of width not being effected by zoom with the calligraphy tool. The Inkscape.org tutorial justifies it by saying: "This makes sense, because the natural "unit of measure" in calligraphy is the range of your hand's movement, and it is therefore convenient to have the width of your pen nib in constant ratio to the size of your "drawing board"" I could understand this if the calligraphy tool was only ever used for calligraphy writing. But I would think it's as likely, if not more likely, to be used as a drawing tool. And as a drawing tool this feature is very frustrating. To ensure consistent thickness lines when inking you have to manually calculate the width everytime you change zoom. Otherwise you end up with a mixture of very thick and very thin lines. Perhaps to not upset traditional calligraphy artists, is it possible we could get a checkbox to toggle how the width is effected when zooming? I think inkscape needs a pre-flight dialog then which gives you errors, warnings and messages concerning your export, otherwise the inexperianced user will struggle to understand why blur failed to export, much less how they can get around the issue. I just tried it on Windows and there's the same problem... Hm... maybe it is just a gtk issue. I think I'll investigate this further on the gtk mailinglist. But I wonder why this works with Firefox without any problems. And Gimp has more or less a mixture of it. It does not work the same way as with my German keyboard, but it is not so annoying as with inkscape or scim. But this problem is really annoying. Almost unusable. Luckily, usually you don't have to enter long texts in inkscape, but in Abiword it's the same problem and really really annoying there. As discussed before, I moved the thinning/thickening functionality into a tool of its own, added two more modes and some controls. For one thing, you don't need Alt anymore :) Attention lib2geom hackers: please consider this a challenge! Can you switch this to using your new lib instead of livarot? Livarot sucks big time with regard to performance and memory leaking (see Known Problems below), and working with it involves way too much black magic which I don't like. What is needed is simple: convert a path to a polygon with a given tolerance, move the points of the polygon according to some simple algorithm, and convert the result back to path with some simplification. If someone switches this to lib2geom and it works good, I will consider adding more modes. Otherwise, I'm afraid I may have to remove the Roughen mode before the release because it's really not working reliably enough (often locks the path with the "directed eulerian" warning, caused by too small subpaths). Now for the official announcement: Tweak tool The Tweak tool is an exciting new way to edit paths. Unlike the Node tool, you don't need to worry about where the nodes of a path are and how to manipulate them to obtain the shape you want. Instead, you just act on any part of a path using the tool's "brush" in order to bend, twist, or stretch that part, and the path will respond smoothly and naturally regardless of where its nodes lie. While not very useful for technical applications such as schemes or diagrams, this tool will be indispensable for artistic uses of Inkscape - cartoons, drawings, sketches, anime, etc. This new functionality is somewhat similar to the "Pucker", "Bloat", and other similar tools in the latest versions of Adobe Illustrator, except that in Inkscape it works softer and is easier to control. The area of the tool's action (its "brush") is visualized as an orange-colored circular outline centered at your mouse pointer. However, that area actually has no sharp boundaries; the power of the tool's action falls off gradually, following a smooth bell-shaped profile. This makes the tool act softly and smoothly, and the paths respond as if they are made of soft jelly. The tool will work on any number of selected objects; for example, you can select all (Ctrl+A) and "smear" your entire drawing by Push. If applied to a shape or text, the tool converts them to paths automatically. You can also apply it to groups of objects. If you're trying to use it without anything selected, it will remind you to select some objects by a statusbar message. Width The width of the tool's brush can be changed by the Width control in the tool's controls bar above the canvas (in the range from 1 to 100). You can also change width by Left and Right arrow keys (same as in the Calligraphy tool) at any time (including during action). Also like in Calligraphy tool, the visible width of the brush is independent of zoom; simply zooming in or out is often easier than adjusting the width if you want to cover a smaller or larger area of the drawing. Force The next control is Force which adjusts the power of the action (in the range from 1 to 100). You can also change width by Up and Down arrow keys at any time (including during action). Think of it as the force of pressure you apply to the paths you tweak. If you have a pressure-sensitive tablet and the "Use pressure" button on the right-hand end of the controls bar is on, then the force will also depend on how hard you actually press your pen into your tablet, varying in the range from zero to whatever you set in the Force control. If all you have is a mouse, then the force will be constant but still settable by the Force control. The force of the effect also depends on zoom (or in other words, it stays the same when measured by screen pixels, same as when you move and object by Alt+arrow keys). Fidelity Any tweaking of a path slightly distorts the entire path, including even those parts that you didn't touch. These distortions are similar to those that a Simplify command produces. The Fidelity value (also in the range from 1 to 100, default is 50) allows you to control the amount of these distortions. With a higher fidelity, the distortions are less noticeable, but the path may end up having a lot of nodes which blows up the SVG size and slows down Inkscape. The best value of Fidelity depends on the nature of your artwork. If you're sculpting an amorphous blob, you can do with low fidelity of about 20. If, however, you are pushing or blowing a text string (as a single path) and want the letters outside the distorted area to remain crisp and clean, you will need to raise fidelity to 80 or more. Modes There are currently four modes in the Tweak tool: Push, Melt, Blow, and Roughen. * This default mode of the tool, Push, simply displaces the part of the path under the cursor in the direction of the drag. The path behaves like soft jelly, bending and bulging smoothly and naturally. It's an easy way to produce various irregular, lifelike, handmade-looking shapes starting from something as simple as an ellipse or a calligraphic stroke. For parallel-stroke hatching (engraving) done in the Calligraphy tool, pushing is an easy way to bend, pinch, or curve the entire hatching uniformly. * The Melt and Blow are two opposite modes that move each point of a path in a direction perpendicular to the path's surface at the point, either inwards (Melt) or outwards (Blow). This is similar to the Inset and Outset commands, except that the Tweak tool can act on a part of a path instead of the whole path. For example, the visible lightness/darkness of an engraving hatching may not exactly correspond to your artistic intention. Also, the ends of strokes are often far from ideal - they may be too blunt or have unsightly bends or blobs. This is where the Tweak tool may help. Select all the strokes in a hatching pattern and apply a light Melt action where you want the lines to become thinner (and the hatching to become lighter), up until total disappearance. If you press hard, melting works as an eraser, so you can easily clean the strokes' ends in a hatching to making them thin, sharp, and uniform. Conversely, applying Blow makes strokes wider (i.e. the hatching becomes darker). Of course, melting and blowing are useful not only for calligraphic strokes. Same as with Push, with Melt and Blow you can sculpt any path, spawning smooth treacle-like appendages with Blowing and carving holes with Melting. Unlike the "node sculpting" mode in the Node tool, however, this does not require adding new nodes, selecting any nodes, or even being aware of nodes at all. * The Roughen mode does exactly this: roughens the edge of the path without changing its overall shape. Slight roughening simply makes the edge crooked and uneven; strong roughening tears and explodes the edge into random blobs and splotches. Note that this operation, especially with high Fidelity, adds a lot of nodes which increases the size of your SVG document and may slow down Inkscape considerably. In particular, pushing/melting/blowing of a roughened path becomes much slower and more difficult, so it's recommended to finalize the overall shape of a path first and roughen it, if necessary, only as the final step. Keyboard shortcuts * W, Alt+F2: switch to the Tweak tool * Shift+P: switch to the Push mode * Shift+M: switch to the Melt mode * Shift+B: switch to the Blow mode * Shift+R: switch to the Roughen mode * Left, Right: change width * Up, Down: change force * mouse drag: act on selected path in the current mode * Ctrl+mouse drag: temporarily switch to Melt (while Ctrl is down) * Shift+Ctrl+mouse drag: temporarily switch to Blow (while Shift+Ctrl is down) Known problems Known problems with the Tweak tool: 1. it is rather slow; 2. it quickly eats memory; and 3. it is sometimes buggy - thin calligraphic strokes may suddenly disappear or change their shape drastically as you're melting or blowing them. For (3), it helps to increase Fidelity. Also, you can undo the bad change and try again with less pressure on the pen - if you do your thinning in several light touches instead of one heavy press, usually you will be able to get the desired result without the buggy behavior. Also, sometimes after roughening, further tweaking of a path becomes impossible with this diagnostic: WARNING **: Shape error in ConvertToShape: directedEulerian(a) == false All these problems stem from the livarot library that we use for geometric manipulation of paths. Hi, When starting the latest and greatest Inkscape (compiled from SVN) I get this: ** (inkscape:6280): CRITICAL **: Inkscape::XML::Document* sp_repr_read_file(const gchar*, const gchar*): assertion `Inkscape::IO::file_test( filename, G_FILE_TEST_EXISTS )' failed ** (inkscape:6280): WARNING **: Unable to read keys file /usr/local/share/inkscape/keys/default.xml My keys are located however in /home/diedenrezi/eclipse_workspace/trunk/share/keys/default.xml What's causing this? I've recently reinstalled Fedora on my pc; did I configure something incorrectly? I've got v0.45.1 from the Red Hat repos installed in parallel, are these conflicting? This used to be working nicely before the reinstall... Thanks, Diederik

See, when a path contains an inner subpath, that subpath makes a hole only when the direction of that subpath is contrary to that of the outer path. Otherwise, if their directions are the same, there's no hole - the path is solid. That's why, if you convert an O to a path and break apart, you get two paths, and when you combine them back, you get the hole back. If you break apart, Path > Reverse the inner path and combine, you won't get a hole. Now, in your font, for some weird reason, the direction of path in "o" is opposite to that of "d" and "g". Therefore when you convert "dog" to path, the places where the letters overlap become holes. And Union of a path with itself only removes the non-hole overlaps as extraneous; it does not touch holes because it assumes they are there for a reason. Therefore, you could not remove those holes in letter overlaps neither by offset nor union. One way to fix this would be, after converting to path, select both inner and outer parts of "o", Path > Reverse them, then combine everything back and Union. Or just use a different font :) It would also help, btw, to not work always in Outline mode - in normal mode it's much easier to see if some overlap is a hole or not (because you have fill). You could also note in regular mode that you have an atrociously huge stroke width (73px!) on your shapes which I assume isn't really necessary for a cutter :) -- bulia byak Inkscape. Problem with Scim and choice of fonts with non-latin-characters in name

Hello list, I have two problems with Inkscape: 1. Everytime I want to input Chinese, Japanese, Korean or a Raw Unicode Value, I use Scim (more precisely Skim). Usually, the not yet committed string of characters is displayed on the spot, the same way as ordinary (e.g. German) strings are displayed. When I choose another character in Scim, the previously written character in the text is deleted and replaced by another one. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_input_method#Kana_to_kanji_conversion as an explanation of how this works). In Inkscape, by contrast, the precommited string is displayed in a seperate box which is somewhere on the screen. I can do all the actions there, but it is extremely annoying because I always have to search the little box and not before I submit the string it is shown in the destinated area. See http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/1135/scimgm1.jpg I have the same problem with Abiword, so I guess it is somehow a problem of GTK. But I do not have the problem with Firefox, so I think there must be a solution to it. I do not have any other gtk programs (apart from Openoffice, but there, scim does not work in any way) so I cannot test this any further as to where this happens. I can't really stress how annoying this problem is. It makes Inkscape almost unusable for typing a longer text in a CJK language. I have Gentoo and tested it with version 0.45.1 2. Also I wanted to choose the fonts “EPSON 教科書体Ｍ” and “文鼎PL細上海宋Uni” in a text field. Note the Japanese/Chinese characters in the font name. Inkscape did display the fonts correctly during the initial font choice, but after I chose the font, it just displayed “EPSON”. It did not choose the Font, then, but happily continued using the former font. Thanks Gerrit Sangel

Pixelated gradients

I created simple gradient with 4 stops where the middle two stops were tight against each other to creat an instant jump from one colour to the next. This instant jump creates pixelation - http://www.microugly.com/images/misc/inkscape-pixel-gradient.gif Is this a known issue? Preview redraw problem in the PDF import dialog

Hi! It seems that there is a preview redraw problem in the PDF import dialog. When I list the pages, the preview seems to cumulate the images (the next page preview is drawn on top of the previous page preview). Yes and that's exactly what I need for my explorer thumbnail extension, so as to allow it to load the renderer. This should be beneficial in several ways: it attracts more attention to the buttons; it visually separates them from the rest of the toolbar; it gives an immediate hint on their purpose - configuring what is and is not affected by Selector tool transformations; and finally it gives these buttons a name ("the Affect buttons") that will make it much easier to explain to users what they need to toggle :) -- bulia byak Inkscape.
