I added a class called SPTRefReference, similar to SPUseReference. It extends URIReference. When I try to instantiate it in my tref struct's init function (tref->ref = new SPTRefReference(SP_OBJECT(tref));), just as the SPUse struct does, it won't link. Something about missing definition for SPTRefReference's vtable. Anyone know what step I am missing? Probably something small or maybe related to this particular compiler (which I have not used before; at least not on Windows). Much appreciated, Gail

Hi all, In my quest to implement <tref> I have been examining the <use> element. In its implementation, there are several members related to the connection it makes to the element it wants to use. I'm trying to sort out which of these is necessary because it seems that there is some duplication. SPUse has the following as members: gchar * href; SPUseReference *ref; sigc::connection _delete_connection; sigc::connection _changed_connection; sigc::connection _transformed_connection; But SPUseReference is in fact a subclass of URIReference. Does having this make the other members redundant to a point? Similarly, SPTextPath uses a subclass of SPUseReference called SPUsePath, which contains all the same sigc::connection stuff that is stored in SPUse. Is it possible that SPUse could strip itself of the connection stuff and maybe even the href (not sure exactly the need for that one) by replacing the SPUseReference with SPUsePath? Most importantly, is there any reason that SPTRef could use SPUsePath to refer to the element it will take character data from? Thanks, your help is much appreciated :) Gail

Layers Dialog Mockup.

The other day, i decided to lock an object using the "lock" checkbox in the properties dialog box, and when i wanted to edit this object again, the only way i could find to unlock it was to edit the XML using the XML editor. This got me thinking, how could an easier way be implented? microUgly and i were throwing around some ideas at http://inkscapeforum.com/ and we thought, why not be able to change these properties of objects in the layers dialog box? anyhoo, the moral to my rambilings is that i did a simple mockup of how this may work: please tell me what you think... mockup: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/images/Layersmockup.png cheers, ryanlerch

New template and palette committed but not installed

hello all, I committed a new template and a new color palette (for use with the Beamer LaTeX package, to produce screen presentations). I just added the files to share/templates and share/palettes (around rev 15000) in svn but I discovered today that, though the files are in a source checkout, they are not installed and therefore not distributed. Is there an extra step to have them installed by "make install"? (I thought that everything in those directories was just copied). Thank you in advance for your help. Fill and stroke properties incompatibility between devel and release versions

Hello everyone, Certain drawings I produce with a recent development version of Inkscape display with stroke and fill attributes as unset in the release version (0.45.1). It is not really a show stopper because it is quite easy to make people install a devel version of Inkscape but it does not help collaboration ("Hey, the image you just sent me is all black!"). I cannot reproduce this on new drawings currently (with devel version 070603200 vs. 0.45.1 on windows) but this file: http://cbetm.univ-perp.fr/repos/distribution_data/tetiaroa/trunk/sampling/s… shows the behavior (NB: you probably have to "save as" and add the svg extension manually on this link. I don't know why but the apache subversion interface insists on treating the file as text). I am the only one seeing this? I won't be able to do some more tests before a while (the logic board of my laptop fried....grrrr) but I thought I would report this before I forget about it. Cheers, JiHO

I think it's a good idea, so long as there are volunteers to handle approving account requests. One thought I've had is if it can be configured to work with LDAP, we could try to shift the project to being more LDAP-based. I have zero LDAP experience, and haven't made any progress on setting this up on inkscape.org, but that's sort of the direction I've wanted to go. Especially since we've also talked about setting up additional software like a forum, translation tool, bug tool, etc. Having to force people to have 7+ separate logins for all these inkscape tools would be annoying at best for both user and admin, so if most could be set up to use LDAP, then it'd save a lot of time all around. Corel Draw CDR importer

Hi, I've just found the sK1 Projekt: http://sk1.sourceforge.net/ It's an Skencil (aka Sketch) fork with an Corel Draw CDR file importer. I haven't tested it but it may be a nice way to convert Corel Draw files to SVG. Perhaps even someone may be interested in porting the code to Inkscape or to a lib that can be used in both programs. Strange glitch (or feature?) in an Inkscape file

Hey all, I just experienced a moment of slight panic - I had a file full of icons (35 to be exact) which I wanted to batch export to separate PNG files. I use a layer below my icons, with transparent rectangles. They are all named appropriately. This is something I do a lot, but on this specific file, batch exporting always resulted in a single file. After much experimentation, I finally decided to take a look at the XML code, and found that every rectangle had this parameter: inkscape:export-filename="C:\2D_Art\icons\AAA.png" (AAA.png is also the name of one of the rectangles/icons in the file) The parameter was identical in all rectangles, and this somehow caused all the rectangles to be exported to the same filename and overwrite each other. A quick search and replace removed it and I was able to export as usual, so problem solved. Still, I'm curious to know what caused it. Where did this parameter come from? Is this something left over from an old version of Inkscape? It was a rather old file, untouched for almost a year. Michael

¡Hola! En la página oficial en castellano dice que hay que dirigirse a aquí para hacer consulta. Espero que tengan soporte en castellano. El tema es que bajé Inkscape en su versión Autopackage. Lo instalo sin ningún problema, pero cuando me voy al menú Efectos>Extrusado me pide la librería PYXML. Me dice donde bajarla y la bajo; pero ésta viene en código fuente y hay que compilarla. Yo no sé cómo se hace. ¿Hay solución para esto? Gracias. Emilio.

Hola Emilio, en primer lugar te sugiero que le eches un vistazo (y que te suscribas) a la lista de usuarios en español: inkscape-user-es@...460... Allí te atenderán mucho mejor. En cuanto al problema que te ocupa, quizás puedas encontrar el paquete correspondiente a pyxml para tu distribución (cosa que deberías mencionar cuando pides este tipo de ayuda). Si no resuelves por ahí, vuelve a preguntar, pero indicando más datos: versión de inkscape, sistema operativo (distribución), entorno de ventanas (Gnome, KDE, etc.) y algún otro dato que pueda se de interés. Where is code for the inkscape prefs dialog?

I've grepped through the sources trying to find where the "Save window geometry" entry in the preferences dialog comes from but I'm coming up with nothing. Where is the code for the prefs dialog? Other than that and a little tweaking, I've pretty much got my patch for remembering window sizes and state (maximized/fullscreen) working. I just need to add the preference to the prefs dialog. --bb

Hello, I wonder whether pdf has the ability to output blur/filter natively. I do a lot now with blur like shadows but the exported pdf is not the same. I already downloaded the pdf reference but there might be to much pages so I did not found the reference. I am looking for something that corresponds to svg filters. Startup preferences

Any hints as to which files I should look at for adding the ability to save Inkscape's window position between runs? -------------------------- Proposal: The basic idea would be to add another preference under Windows which is "Restore last window geometry" right before "Save window geometry" The the logic would be to try saved geometry in the doc first, then use the user preference. onStartup: if (startupDoc && startupDoc.hasSavedWindowLayout) { setWindowGeometryFromStartupDoc(startupDoc); } else if (userPrefs.restoreLastWindowGeometry && userPrefs.hasStoredWindowGeometry) { setWindowGeometryFromUserPrefs(userPrefs); } onShutdown: saveLastWindowGeometryToUserPrefs(getCurrentWindowGeometry) This would also save/restore the maximized state as is common for MS Windows apps. --------- Actually my preference would be to reverse the order and always use the userPrefs first if restoreLastWindowGeometry is set, but I'm thinking the other way around would be more politically acceptable with current developers. And I don't think the difference is worth making yet another preference. Suggestions appreciated. This one just really frustrates me. Higher Precision

I'm curious... why is the precision for grids, guides and tiled clones only 0.00 while you can readily place objects with a precision of 0.000? Is there any special reason for the lower precision? I have already posted this as a request for higher precision and as a bug for inconsistency. And while I'm thinking about it... how about the same level of precision for angles of rotation?

Flood fill suggestion - Bound threshold

Some of the stuff I do with the calligraphy tool has gaps between sections I would like to colour. Visually the gaps don't bother me, but I can't use Flood Fill when the area isn't properly closed. It would be nice there was a threshold where we could say that gaps of a certain size should be considered closed. Yeah, I think I kinda talked you into PyXML. Though you can certainly write extensions for Inkscape without it. I had no idea that people would let something so important, ie one of the only python libraries that supported some of the more advanced XML features, go defunct. PyXML was not internal to the python distribution. It was an extension layer on top of the core DOM functionality available in the python distribution. I don't know what happened to PyXML. I asked several acquaintances who are closer with the Python community and no one knew. Everyone I spoke with is quite happy with the ElementTree api that is now part of the standard Python 1.5 distribution. ElementTree looks reasonable to me, but again like the core dom module in the standard library it doesn't support functionality that is important to me especially XPath. Thankfully I think I may have found the best of both worlds in lxml. Someone has implemented the popular ElementTree API on top of libxml2 and extended it by exposing libxml2's support for XPath and other technologies that are important for working with XML. Could one convert the code from PyXML to lxml using regex and string processing, I suppose. The translation is pretty simple. You could probably do a 1:1 substitution automatically. For me it is going to be easier to edit the relatively few scripts in the Inkscape distribution by hand. And that will help me learn the API a bit better. Summer of Code Update

Hi all! Thought it might be a good time for an update on Summer of Code proceedings. Essentially, my approach so far has been to tackle a bug or two, as suggested by Richard way back in April, before moving on to the interface redesign. I chose "[ 1243190 ] SVG Text: tRef Elements do not work" to work on first because it should give me a hands on feel for text in SVG and help me become familiar with certain aspects of the Inkscape architecture. After this bug, I may choose another or dive into the UI stuff; it depends on how long this one takes. Gail

Better late than never, I would like to finally create my promised tutorial on how to set up building and debugging with Eclipse under Windows. A couple of questions first: (1) I made an account for the wiki, but I'm not sure if I need some kind of special permission to edit the main page <http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Inkscape> in order to add my new page. Or maybe one of you guys has to just create the page for me and I can start editing it? I would call it "UsingEclipse" probably, and put it in the Dev Documentation under General. (Although I am only doing Windows, somebody could add information related to Linux and Mac later on.) Let me know how that all works... (2) I'm hoping images can be uploaded directly to the wiki (for screenshots). If not, then let me know what most people do to get around this. Gail

The death of PyXML

PyXML died a neglectful death a ways back now. I failed to notice. And I was too much in denial to listen to the many many kind individuals who tried to tell me. We've been relying on PyXML for the python extensions. Now we need to replace it. I'm sure anyone who has ever worked with extensions will be happier when it is gone. The major requirements I can think of are: - Unicode support - Excellent namespace handling - Excellent XPath support (more than just basic support, many XPath features are too useful to be without) - documentation for new extension devs - in distribution or easy to obtain anything else? If I was left to my own devices and I had to do something right now, I would start with LXML. (Not a big vote of confidence that the front page of the website is offline http://codespeak.net/lxml/ check the google cache :-)) LXML uses the ElementTree api as much as possible, this API is coming standard with python 2.5 so I expect people will be getting familiar with it. It is a wrapper around libxml2 so it has a lot of power behind the scenes (adds things like xpath and xslt support). I'm not sure how things sit with the easy to obtain issue, but there are binaries available for win32. Not sure about OSX. And everyone on linux compiles everything anyway. :-) Aaron Spike

Reduce compilation times?

Hi everyone, I find myself recompiling a lot recently. ;) Maybe this is a stupid question, but are there any secret make targets or switches to the configure script that can be used to only compile a 'minimal working part' of Inkscape that still allows me to test my new code? It would be awesome if I could save at least some of the time I currently spend waiting for the compilations to finish. Or are there other ways to speed the whole process up (other than bying a faster computer :))? Thanks a lot, Max P.S.: I read about someone using distcc but at home I don't have another machine around and I haven't yet tried to get it working with one of the computers at university (I'm not sure how to do that anyway).

Hi, I can confirm that behaviour, but I really don't have a clue on how to reproduce it, as I didn't manage to find a stable way to make that happen. While all the functionalities of Inkscape are still functional (I can save, open files, change document properties, switch between instruments etc...), it looks like the drawing area is blocked so I cannot select, draw, etc... Saving the file, closing Inkscape and reopening the file always resolved the problem. I still see that behaviour in the latest SVN versions, so if I find a way to reproduce it I'll file a bug report. Selection trouble with geometric bounding box on zero width objects

The issue seems generic enough but I find it surprising that nobody else experienced this problem since the geometric bounding box option appeared quite some time ago now. pLAySVG and extensions

As a Playful Geometer, I have been developing some python libraries for the manipulation of SVG, and I have developed some Inkscape extensions that depend on the project, and reside in the code base of it. The project resides on sourceforge here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/play-svg Some sample artwork developed using pLAySVG: http://playful-geometer.deviantart.com Currently the libraries self-install using python distutils, but the Inkscape extensions do not. My difficulty in acomplishing the latter: - for Linux, I must sudo to run the installer, so that when the Inkscape extensions are copied to the extensions directory, they are owned by root, and thus are not available to users running Inkscape (this may be remedied by doing a chown in the setup.py script) - for Windows and MacOSX, I do not know where to copy the extensions Could someone offer me some suggestions on how to make this work? Considering that Inkscape is leaning towards separate distribution of extensions, it is important that these issues be fleshed out. I started a wiki page as a HOWTO for package distribution of Inkscape extensions here http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/ExtensionPackageHOWTO, however, it does not deal with the owership issues I mentioned, so it is inacurate in that sense. Originally, my intentions with pLAySVG was just to allow me to create images using code rather than point-and-click methods, but now I am interested in making pLAySVG more than a pet project, something that will be - an educational resource that will allow people (especially children) to learn about geometry, computer graphics, SVG/XML documents in a playful and creative way (similar to the way LOGO has been employed) - a toolkit for those who wish to do graphics scripting - most relevenatly, a toolkit for those who wish to develop Inkscape extensions Considering this, I am interested in expanding the functionality of pLAySVG to encorporate some the features already resident in Inkscape, including: - path operations (i.e. union, combine) - arc estimation as in the circle tool - star tool Could anyone offer any advice and/or assistance on this ? As well, I'd like to figure out how I could tap into the functionality of lib2geom and make it accessible for extensions developers and stand-alone graphics scripting. Lastly, I am interested in making my software used as an educational resource, and I welcome any input you have on achieving this goal. gtk theme and GTK2_RC_FILES

Hello everybody, I am trying to add a default GTK theme to Inkscape (on OS X but the issue is probably generic enough). So I added the theme to an Inkscape specific directory and pointed the variable GTK2_RC_FILES to it and the theme is used. Fine. But I also want Inkscape to honor ~/.gtkrc-2.0 when it exists, so that the user can override the default gtk theme we'll ship if he/she likes to. GTK2_RC_FILES looks much like nay PATH variable with path element separated by semicolons, so I used: export GTK2_RC_FILES="/etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc/:$TOP/themes/Default/ gtk-2.0/gtkrc:$HOME/.gtkrc-2.0" where $TOP is an Inkscape specific dir and $HOME/.gtkrc-2.0 points to a theme in $HOME/.themes which works and is used by Inkscape when GTK2_RC_FILES is not set. From the little I could find about GTK2_RC_FILES it looks like the order is inverted compared to PATH: the last argument prevails (and I've tried the other way around with the same result anyway). However, this does not use the theme defined in ~/.gtkrc-2.0, it still uses the theme in Inkscape's directory. So I could add a check for the existence of ~/.gtkrc-2.0 and define export GTK2_RC_FILES only if it does not exist but I was looking for a more generic solution and for the correct way to use GTK2_RC_FILES. Is someone knowledgeable enough with GTK to point me in the right direction? How do the Windows folks do: is it possible to override the default GTK theme on windows? Thanks in advance. Undo Extrude trashes fill settings and deletes unrelated objects?

Hey everyone, While working today I came across something that I wanted to run past you all to see about filing a bug. Forgive me, but I always hesitate to clutter bug databases without at least posting to see if anyone else can confirm an issue I'm running into. Here are the steps to reproduce. Given the attached extrudesample.svg file. Create a polygon or star. (I used the default setting for a star, but it also happens if you create a square, circle or any other object). Apply: Effects -> Generate from Path -> Extrude (Again default settings in the dialog that opens). Select Edit -> Undo (Ctrl-z). Notice how the highlight, blur, or other fill effects all disappear when you undo? If you redo the Extrude effect again they all reappear. I can reproduce this consistently on Inkscape 0.45, on Ubuntu 7.04. In this sample file there appear to be a couple of different things happening. Objects that have a gradient applied to them are deleted from the drawing. Objects that have a blur effect are retained, but the blur is removed from the object. The bug also doesn't seem to care if the objects are grouped, or not, or even if they're on separate layers. Notice the items in the reflection are on a layer named "reflection." Anyway, thanks for taking a look. If someone knows of a bug that already exists for this issue, I'll be happy to include this sample file for testing if one isn't already attached to the bug. Or I can file a new bug, but I wanted to run it by you all first to see what your thoughts are. Thanks, Sak.

Scaling & Viewbox

I cannot see a way for Inkscape to handle the viewbox element in order to scale coordinates, ie. setting lat long coordinates. Am I missing something or is there a good workaround ? I'm trying to develop a way to import/export kml files, keeping the lat long settings within Inkscape.

Proposed gradient editor

Hello everybody, I am writing to propose an enhancement on the way stops are defined and edited in the gradient editor on Inkscape. Sorry for cross-posting to the user and devel lists, but I would like feedback from both crowds. The idea is that the stops of the gradient are shown as circles on a larger gradient preview area, with the X axis representing the offset of the stop and the Y axis representing the alpha of a particular stop. Also, note that the circles contain the colour that corresponds to the particular stop. Please see the attached diagrams. Despite being a programmer myself, I won't be able to implement this feature right now, mainly due to my limited C++ ability and lack of familiarity with the Inkscape codebase. Hopefully someone will like it enough to give it a go. It would be great to see what people think. Stathis

PDF to SVG conversion with libpoppler and cairo

Hi, I noticed that one of the SoC'ers is working on integrating libpoppler with Inkscape for PDF import - I have investigated this briefly and written a quick-and-actually-not-too-dirty PDF to SVG converter with libpoppler and cairo. It is available at <http://seis.bris.ac.uk/~db9052/pdf2svg.tgz>. It is a *very* simple program that opens a PDF file with poppler and renders it to a cairo surface that is connected to an SVG file. Very simple and very effective and you might want to think about integrating it with Inkscape as is. It has worked on everything I've tried it on, though it has the nasty habbit of slicing large bitmaps up into small chunks. It doesn't produce the most streamlined SVG files either... Hi Devels! I'm trying to re-make an svg2png service on the web using the Inkscape 0.45, but it is not working. I'm using the inkscape by the command line in a server without X with this command: inkscape $svg -z -h 160 -e $png If i connect by SSH i can use this command and works! But if my PHP code try this i recive this error: (inkscape:3946): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_main_quit: assertion `main_loops != NULL' failed What is missing? If I run the PHP by the commad line: php index.php 'http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/15/Svg.svg' it works! What is diferent on the apache? Whay the GTK gives error? PS and EPS input with pstoedit

Hi everybody, There were several discussions in the past about dropping the requirement for sketch in PS and EPS input. pstoedit can be used instead, with its plot-svg backend (which is free, don't confuse it with the non-free "svg" backend). I produced a patch to do this, which waited in the tracker for a time. https://sourceforge.net/tracker/? func=detail&atid=604308&aid=1629798&group_id=93438 I just committed it today (r15046) to see what happens. Apparently it has been used in Fedora's Inkscape for a while so it should be quite safe. However it still causes warning messages to appear and some strange zooming behavior depending on the source of the EPS/PS file. I would appreciate feedback and advise on this. Debian package of Inkscape and printing with CUPS

Hello, We ship the Inkscape 0.44 package from Debian Etch in the 64 Studio creative distro, and lately the printing support for local CUPS printers seems to be completely broken. There has also been a Debian bug opened, see: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=423952 Does anyone have Inkscape printing working on Etch, without resorting to lpr or another old-school method? In 64 Studio, even manually pasting the output of lpstat -p into the Print dialogue box makes no difference, printing just fails silently. Any tips would be greatly appreciated :-) Cheers! Daniel

While I was coding for some reason I thought there was too much freedom. That's why I came up with the second one. It cleans the SVG up a little aswell. Also, xlink:href="x-inkscape-plugin:org.inkscape.effect.foo" seems overly verbose. The second proposal has a minimal effect specification (probably too minimal). Thanks for all your input and comments. In the meanwhile I will start implementing the second one. How to implement layer flipping

Hello, I would like to use Inkscape to draw animation frames. I have set up every frame as a separate layer. Now I'd like to be able to "flip" between layers for quickly checking the animation. This means that there would be an "up" key which makes the next layer active and visible and all others invisible, and a "down" key which makes the previous layer active and visible and all others invisible. My best bet was that I could change the active layer and visibility in a Python script with the attributes inkscape:current-layer="layerX" and style="display:none". Would that work? How could I trigger a script with a single keystroke? And would it be an efficient way of implementing this? On Aaron Spike's site it said that the entire SVG is written to a file when it's passed to Python. However, I'd need to flip frames back and forth every second if I want to check the animation. Also, does Inkscape parse and reconstruct the entire document when Python has changed something, or is something like a diff applied? Are there other easy ways of implementing this flipping in the C++ code? Font selection

Hi, everyone. If I select some text and open the Text & Font dialogue I can select Helvetica Normal no problem, however if I select Helvetica Black, Narrow, or Ultra <anything>, I just get Normal. Similar things happen in Gill Sans, Futura, Frutiger etc. If I try to edit the xml to show any of these varients the xml editor replaces them with "normal". Anyone know why? Thoams Worthington

I think that either we need to get those in the enum only once, or that we need to change our architecture to split those ranges into two separate enums and sets of calls.

Sometimes we decide to change the brightness, contrast, saturation or other things on a raster image, inside the SVG file. The OpenRaster proposal ( http://pippin.gimp.org/OpenRaster ) is a good ideia for some things and for a extending possibilities with raster in inkscape. With a initial suport of OpenRaster on inkscape we can have special controls for change raster properties whitout to destroy the original raster data. "Hey Boss... you do not want a lot of contrast? Ok! I don't lose the original image." (Click on menu "object > raster > edit properties") ;-D (easier then re-open on GIMP) How can it works? The inkscape can have a suport for the OpenRaster format and allow the OpenRaster name space on the SVG XML. When we try to change the contrast on a raster image the XML changes from: <image xlink:href="img.jpg" /> to this: <openraster:image> <openraster:layers> <openraster:brightness-contrast contrast='1.4'/> <openraster:layer src='img.jpg'/> </openraster:layers> </openraster:image> We can use the menu "object > raster > aplay raster changes" and the OpenRaster block comes to a <svg:image>. It will help to send the SVG file to other softwares. With this implementation effects will can handle this raster properties too. The <animate> can be used on the 0.48 to animate raster properties too. (extending more the SVG standard) ;-) May the Mozilla team implement that too? What you think? Inkscape as a LaTeX drawing editor

Hello everybody, I've been looking for some time for a good vector editor to make pictures to include in LaTeX documents. I eventually settled to TpX: http://tpx.sf.net which has the following interesting features - can include LaTeX code in a document - can save to a combined TeX/PS/PDF format which is very easy to include in a LaTeX document On the other hand, it is "primitive" (to say the least) compared to inkscape, works only on win32, is prone to crash and AFAIK it's development is stalled. I'd like to use inkscape as a replacement. The first feature is (partially) present in inkscape with the "render latex formula" effect, the latter may require some explanation. When you save a document in TpX you get three files: a PDF and a PS with the drawing (but no text) and a TeX file which includes the PDF or the PS (via \includegraphics) and overlays the text using TeX "picture" environment. To include the picture you simple \input the the TeX file and it's done. This way the text is actually rendered by TeX, using whatever fonts and packages it has available. My C sucks, but if something like this can be implemented as a python effect I'd like to try. I'm thinking about something among these lines: - a tool to insert "latex text" in the document (this could eventually be rendered like the current latex plugin does, but the user should be able to change its contents freely) - an export plugin for "combined latex" which * outputs everything but the "latex text" as a PS and a PDF (using the current PS/PDF exporters I think) * foreach "latex text" box it computes its position and size and outputs a TeX file with the picture environment. Is something like this actually viable (and implementable without getting mad) ? Sorry for the long post, I hope I've made myself sufficiently clear. Davide davide125@...92...

Develop Inkscape Animation

Hello! Creed by now you know that I am developing animations in Inkscape for my thesis of bachelor. I have abandoned the idea to insert the animation in the code source of Inkscape because it does not support the multithreading and I'am writing an extension in python. I would have from porvi some questions: 1) I can write an extension in python that, once under way, to regular intervals it modifies the attributes of an object "rect" or "path" without to block inkscape? I explain better… the python extensions starting in a windows shell and this shell blocks for some second inkscape. It would be possible to reduce to icon this window and to make to turn the animation seeing in real Time on the canvas of inkscape what it happens? 2) As I can proceed in order to analyze the nodes of a document and to only choose nodes that have a particular "ID"? self.selected.iteriterms () it allows me to only estimate the nodes of objects selects to you but not of all the document. Fonts and Boolean Ops

I have two problems on the Windows Nightly Build from two nights ago. 1. Font rendering with styles defined like <svg:g style="font-family:Differentfont"> <text>"Hello"</text> </g> The text is rendering in the default font rather than the font defined in the parent style 2. Boolean operations When I am doing difference operations, the resulting path is not in the same location as the starting point. I'm not really expecting things to work in the nightlies, but I wanted to make sure they get noticed. I'll check the latest tonight after work. Multiple obejct node select

Hey, An e-mail from LGM. I've been chatting with a few of the artists here and they have an enhancement request. That is to be able to select nodes across multiple objects. The use case here is that you have multiple objects that are all slightly off, and you want to extend them slightly by adjusting the nodes. Currently, if they all share an edge you want to move, you have to move each individually. I think the difficulty here is to figure out when your selecting if you want another object or another node. What do people think about this? It seems that you can't use alt to select under... we're running out of keys. I'm all for requiring two keyboards ;) --Ted

Hello everyone, Is a 0.45.2 release scheduled? Are there enough bugs fixed to start the process now? John Faith got Inkscape to compile on Mac OS X 10.3 and a new point release would allow to ship some official Inkscape packages via Sourceforge for this platform, which was left behind by 0.45.1. Otherwise two solutions are possible: - just add a notice on the webpage and redirect 10.3 people to the dev builds until 0.46 (not very nice but workable) - patch 0.45.1 source, compile it and upload it as 0.45.1 on Sourceforge. It won't be 0.45.1 exactly of course but most changes are small mistakes here and there and some new definitions in isinf.h, isnan.h,... so nothing major. What do you think? Hello everybody, during the preparation of my application for Summer of Code, I already experienced the great feedback from Inkscape's vivid community. Thanks to all who shared their thoughts! With the official start of SoC rapidly approaching, I would now like to invite everyone who is interested to collect their ideas on the project's Wiki page, which can be found at http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/GSOC2007_3D_box_tool I only created a skeleton page. Please feel free to extend it as you wish. It is intended to be taken over by the community and to serve as a kind of 'market place' where people can share their ideas. Of course you are free to use the mailing list, too. But I considered it convenient to have a central location where all the information is collected. I do not make any promises as to which proposals are actually feasible and will be implemented. But I'm grateful for any suggestions, and any feedback is certainly very helpful to find out what you as users expect from such a tool and how it can be made to help you most in your everyday work. Regarding the latter point, I'd also be interested in what you will be using this tool for (if at all) so as to get an idea which features I should focus on as soon as I (hopefully) get beyond the minimal implementation. Inkscape runs on Max OS 10.3

Hello everybody, Thanks to the repeated efforts of John Faith, the latest version of Inkscape now seems to run on OS X 10.3 aka. Panther. Many Panther users reported some bugs and were disappointed that the new 0.45 release left them behind. These cruel days are hopefully over! A build is available in Inkscape's development builds repository: http://inkscape.modevia.com/macosx-snap/?C=M;O=D [pick Inkscape-20070504-10.3.dmg] This build is made from a recent SVN snapshot so it has more features (and potentially more bugs also ;) ) than the 0.45 release. The application is also larger than usual (>100Mb) because it is not stripped from debugging symbols. Currently John is still struggling to complete a compile from a fresh start. Once this is sorted out and once this first build gets some testing, we'll provide a more official build (maybe a 0.45.2 if this is ever planned to happen). Alternatively an extension which would map all colors in selected objects to their closer match in the selected swatches set would probably be very nice in many situations and not just on a traced object (I am thinking of cliparts imported from OCAL for example). Hi everyone: A few months ago there was a discussion about UI improvements to help designing seamless patterns. The following link has a couple of screenshots of an application made for textile patterns: http://www.arahne.si/paint.html It would nice to have a View mode for patterns. More descriptions: The designer prepares a canvas, for example 24x24. Inside we draw something. We change to Pattern view mode The canvas changes to a pattern view where we can tweak a couple of parametres for displacement. Whenever we draw outside the canvas the view reflects changes for seamless design. untidy new menu

For some reason the templates listed in the new menu are not in alphabetical order on my system (inkscape 0.45 / ubuntu feisty) also they are given rather obscure names with underscores. If they were listed alphabetically and given more human sounding names "Default page (in points)" rather than "default_pt" that would be great, although I think copying the gimps new dialog box would be a much better way of doing this (they have pretty icons in their menu too :) ). PDF export seems clipped at the top with margin at bottom

Dear Folks, Apologies for cross-posting here after trying inkscape-users. Perhaps this is the correct forum. I use Inkscape 0.45 (Feb 3 2007) on a Kubuntu Dapper Linux PC. It is a great program and thanks for it! I have hit a minor but niggling problem. I am trying to get a tight bounding box around a single exclamation mark input as text at large font size, selected, converted from text to path, and saved as a PDF, from within Inkscape. I have used Path-> Object to path and File -> Document properties -> Page -> Fit page to selection and exported as PDF. There seems to be a margin beyond the object at the bottom, and the top of the object is clipped, very likely by the same amount. This is seen when viewing the exported PDF at 6400% in Acroread. The dotted box that appears in Inkscape when the object is selected appears perfect. The settings for snapping to grid/object/path have been toggled with no change in behaviour of the exported file. These problems persist for any text string, regardless of font, converted to paths, and exported as a PDF. I can post PDFs illustrating this if told where to post them. Is this a bug, and if so, is there a workaround? Otherwise, how may I avoid it? TIA. --Chandra 02 May 07

GTK icon sizes

Hello everybody, I am working on a GTK theme and I noticed some strange things with icon sizes. The icon sizes definitions for GTK I could find are: # gtk-menu -> icon in menus: file, edit, etc. # gtk-button -> icon on yes, no, delete, cancel, back, forward, etc. buttons # gtk-small-toolbar -> not sure about this # gtk-large-toolbar -> toolbars icons # gtk-dnd -> don't know # gtk-dialog -> notification icon in dialogs (e.g. warning, error,etc.) # panel-menu -> icon size in so called 'start' menu but Inkscape apparently uses gtk-menu size for some toolbars icons, instead of gtk-small-toolbar size as used for the rest of the toolbars: - the fill and stroke swatches both at the bottom of the window and at the end of each tool for which they are relevant - the eye and lock icons next to the layer drop down - the lock icon between width and height in selector tool toolbars as well as all icons at the right end of the toolbar - the magnifier icon at the top-right of the rulers/scollbars - the last icon of the node tool toolbar - the connector tool toolbar last two icons - the gradient tool toolbar icons - the dropper tool toolbar icons It does not look like and intended behavior but maybe it is. And a less important problem: in Inkscape's icon.svg, gtk-small- tollbar size icons are designed at 16x16 and gtk-large-toolbar size icons are 24x24. All icons of the fill and stroke dialog are designed a gtk-large-toolbar size (24x24) but the plain, gradient, pattern etc. icons of the fill and stroke dialog are displayed at gtk-small- toolbar size (16x16) which results in less crispy icons. Hello everybody, Does anyone know who designed the icon Inkscape uses on OS X? (you can see it here: http://inkscape.modevia.com/macosx-snap/?C=M;O=D). Does anyone have it in a vector format? I would like to remove the paintbrush from the icon to make it more consistent with Inkscape on the other platforms, if that's OK with the author. Then I'll use this new icon to create OS X like document icons for SVG, EPS, etc. What about the plan to change current icon to a Tangoified version? In which case I'll use this one directly. Thanks. Inkscape deals as easily with a 1m*1m page than with an A4 one and it allows me to specify sizes (including font sizes) in cm and get a better feeling of how big things will actually be. It make you forget the nightmarish days when you used PowerPoint for the task! The poster below was designed entirely in Inkscape for presentation on a 4-foot-high by 8-foot-wide poster board (1.2m x 2.4m). Hello everybody, Firt of all, I'd like to thank all the individuals involved in the creation and development of such an efficient and enjoyable software. Now, allow me to introduce myself. I'm a French writer and have regurlarly contributed articles about Inkscape to the French Magazine "Linux Pratique". I had the opportunity to write a book about Inkscape for Pearson Education France (Edition). This book will be officially published in France this coming May 12th. The editor has accepted to print one special issue sooner, for the upcoming Libre Graphics Meeting. Cedric Gemy (Pygmee) will bring it with him and will have it on display for all to see. I hope that it will bring you much happiness and help promote our beloved Inkscape. Of course, all the illustrations of the exercise is book, including the cover, were made with Inkscape. Most of it is really great (for me, one of Inkscape main strengths) but some details could be improved which would leave room for even greater improvements! Proposed changes: => Ctrl+Alt+clic should display the first described behavior, even there is a group selected first (this would probably make things work the same for Shift+Ctrl+Alt+clic also). I think it is more consistent with the idea that Ctrl selects inside groups and does not contradict the idea that alt selects underneath the currently selected object => Shift+Drag should _toggle_ the selection of what is inside the selection rectangle and not just add. I cannot count the times when I would have had the use for this behavior in the past. In addition it is more consistent with Shift+clic toggle behavior. => Ctrl+Drag and Shift+Ctrl+Drag behavior is strange when the selection is empty, I think it could (should?) do nothing => similarly Alt+Drag behavior is odd when the selection is not empty. IMHO, Alt+Drag should always draw a scribble selection path now. It is more useful. (=> It would be nice if scribble paths could have the same visual aspects as rect selections) And in the end, long term improvement: => Create full "contact" and "encircle" selection modes: . In encircle mode rect selections behave as now, scribble selection paths are automatically closed and only objects inside are selected (i.e. lasso tool) . In contact mode, rect selection behave as in AI, scribble selections paths are left as is (i.e. not closed) and behave as now Switching between the two would be most convenient through a modifier key. If the last two changes above are done, Ctrl+drag and Ctrl+Alt +drag are freed and could be used. If we consider that Ctrl switches to contact mode, we have: Ctrl+drag = contact rect selection and Ctrl +Alt+drag = contact scribble selection, and Alt+drag becomes encircle scribble selection. Otherwise, this could be achieved via a toggle (shortcut: m for "selection Mode", can't find a better one). The "issue" with this is that rect selection is probably more useful in encircle mode while scribble selection is probably more useful in contact mode so the toggle state should be independent for these two selection types (so that is is possible to switch from encircling-rect-mode to contact- scribble-mode by just pressing Alt, without having to pass through m- Alt-scribble-m). [3rd attempt to send this.] Hello, I was curious if anyone had a chance to think about this bug or if anyone had a minute to try a quick experiment. In configure.ac, there is a block used to check if gcc can use -Wno-pointer-sign in CFLAGS. Unfortunately, the "AC_LANG(g++)" means that g++ is used for this compile test when gcc should be used, CLFLAGS is ignored, and the test always passes. For gcc4 this doesn't matter, but this breaks gcc3 when building in src/libcroco. If anyone with gcc 3 or 4 could try a reconfigure, that would be helpful to see if this fixes other environments with gcc <4 and also does not break gcc4. Adding "AC_LANG_PUSH(C)" and "AC_LANG_POP" around the AC_COMPILE_IFELSE in configure.ac seems to fix this problem (see patch below which is also in tracker #1702352). I've tried this patch on gcc3.3 OS 10.3.9. After changing configure.ac, run ./autogen.sh then ./configure. For gcc<4, the final bit of configure output should not have -Wno-pointer-sign in CFLAGS. Another thing I'm designing into Laidout! Though right now, it can only do polygonal non-rectangular pages. Someday it'll be any bezier path, so I can do layout on, for instance, the shape formed by the intersection of several cylinders, which makes faces whose sides are sine waves. Of course, objects going over page boundaries is rather a chore to make work in an expected way, but it's worth it in the end. Whenever I make up a new resume, I find myself wanting to make tabstops lie along some funky curve, rather than a boring old straight vertical line. Another guide idea I'm working on is "2-d guides" for help in importing multiple images, a kind of a distribution tool, to distribute into 1 or more specified regions with specified orientations, whether to rescale objects to fit, and whether to dump objects into a space as a kind of stream. One application of this is dumping in 4 photos into 4 sections on a page, so that each image is the maximum size it can be within each section, rotating the photo if need be.
