Lorem ipsum extension

In case someone missed it, we now have a very nice extension by Jos Hirth that creates a "Lorem ipsum" random text of given length. Nice! I changed its name to "Lorem ipsum", moved it to the Render submenu and changed it so that the first sentence is always "Lorem ipsum" (the rest are randomly shuffled). Enjoy. I've just added the ability to round the caps of calligraphic strokes, which is useful when the calligraphic tool is being used with low "fixity" to simulate a round pen (as I often do when inking comics). Right now there's no UI for it, but the "cap_rounding" parameter for the calligraphic tool can be set to a constant from 0.0 (existing behavior, a flat line) to 1.0 (an approximate half-circle) in preferences.xml. -mental

Interrupting interruptible displays

Hi, all. I wanted to give a quick update on the set of changes I committed this morning. Basically, buila's cool interruptible display code is now enhanced so that, for operations that require the whole display to be updated (rubberbanding, any sort of drawing operation), the interruptibility of the display code can be disabled and then re-enabled. During the disabled times, the entire affected screen rectangle will paint, making sure the previewed object is displayed accurately. This provides (I hope) the best balance between speed and precision while working in Inkscape. I believe I've hit most of the drawing operations that can benefit from this change. I tested it on the last few pages of my latest webcomic, and it seems to be stable. Thanks, John

It makes sense to build my CAD tools for inkscape on the geometry library that they are developing, as Botty suggested. LaTeX extension

This is a new version of eqtexsvg.py which should help resolve this bug: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1495693&group_id=9… It uses the sax parser to read the svg output. If someone can make the script determine whether to use the plot-svg or svg pstoedit plugin this should be able to handle the output from both. Cheers, Marcus

Getting started with the CAD tools...

I've got an hour or two at the end of this work to get started on my CAD tools for Inkscape. (I checked out a couple of books on C++ from my local library in case I get stuck on something.) :] First let me ask a question, and then I'll explain my plan. (You guys can let me know if the plan is feasible with Inkscape's architecture.) Where can I find the classes used to represent Inkscape's geometries? (I'm assuming that each geometry type is represented by a separate class file. Let me know if this is incorrect.) I've dowloaded the source code for Inkscape 0.44, but I couldn't find a "geometry" folder in the "src" folder of the distribution. I imagine there would be a class file for rectangles, circles, elipses, lines, polylines and polygons. (Unless rectangles are represented as polylines and elipses as modified circles...) Now, for my plan of attack... Here is a basic description of my goal for the CAD tools: Tools that allow the user to create the basic Inkscape geometries using precise coordinate entry. (For example, the user could enter coordinates into a dialog box for the two endpoints of a line and then create that line, or they might enter the coordinate for the start point of the line, and then an angle and distance that would be used to compute the endpoint of the line.) Or the user might use other tools to select the precise coodinates of existing geometries as the input for such a tool, instead of entering the coordinates directly. (For example, selecting the coordinate at the midpoint of a line and the node of a polygon, and drawing the line with these exact coordinates as the two endpoints.) These tools will also allow the user to precisely modify existing geometries. (For example, move a polygon by precisely selecting two coorinates on existing geometries to compute the change in X and change in Y for the translation.) Here is what I need to do: [1] Design and implement what I call "coordinate selectors". These are tools that allow very precise selection of points on the canvas. Typically these points will be selected from existing geometries.I would like to implement the following coordinate selectors for Inkscape: End Point (The coordinate at the end point of a line or polyline.) Mid Point (The coordinate at the mid point of a line, polyline segment, or polygon segment.) Nearest Node (The coordinate at the node nearest to center of selection window created by a mouse drag on the canvas.) All Nodes (The coordinates of all nodes within a selection window created by a mouse drag on the canvas.) Perpendicular (The coordinate at point on a line, polyline segment, polygon segment, or projection of any of these segments that is perpendicular to another selected point.) Intersection (The coordinate of the point at the intersection of two or more lines, polyline segments, or polygon segments.) Offset (The coordinate of a point created by projecting an offset along the alignment or direction of two other points and a fixed distance.) Projected Intersection (The coordinate of a point located at the projected intersection of any two lines, polyline segments, or polygon segments.) I'll get started by examing the geometry classes, which I will need to use in my calculations for the coordinate tools. But I will also need to figure out how to add a tool to Inkscapes user interface that allows the user to drag a window on the canvas and then programatically access the geometries or shapes that are contained by or intersect that window. (Perhaps I can use the exisitng pointer/selection tool in Inkscape?) Let me know what you think of this plan, and let me know how I can get to those geometry classes. For example, in OpenJUMP I am building coordinate selectors that can store there selected coordinates on a "Coordinate Clipboard" that can be accessed by the user or programatically.

Layered export for LaTeX

Hello, welcome everybody. I am new to Inkscape and this list. :) Let me explain my situation. I am an electrical engineer and currently working towards my PhD degree, for that reason I am using LaTeX very often. Since the very first moment I had a problem to find a proper application to create vector-based graphics in a convenient way. The special problem is that the labels in the graphics should use the LaTeX fonts and macros that I use in my paper. The only application that supports this (up to my knowledge) is XFig. The vector based graphics itself are being exported as Postscript or PDF. An additonal LaTeX file containing the labels is generated that includes the PS/PDF graphics file. At compile-time, LaTeX puts the text above the PS/PDF graphics, just at the position where it should be. - That is just a great for me (and a lot of others I know)! The problem with XFig is the following: - Usability (argh!) - Portability (at work I have Windows, I did not find a proper Version of XFig, JFig that did the same job as it does on my Mac) Form what I have seen from Inkscape it has a very good usability and is platform-independent, a very good place to start from. :) Since I have seen others requesting this "layered LaTeX export feature" on lists and forums, but I did not see that it was coded, I hereby volunteer to implement this feature. I hope to get some help from this list to implement this feature into Inkscape. I only had a 2 minutes look at the sources, but my plans are roughly like that: - descent the document tree, find text items, write them to a LaTeX file, remove them form the tree - pass the graphics-only document tree to the standard PS/PDF export routines Could it work out that way? I found the DebugDialog code but was confused when setting dialogs.debug to 1 in preferences.xml didn't show the dialog. Hello all, I have enabled the great work that Roan has done on adapting getid3 to use SVG and XML and glued in this work. His work seems to work great thus far. I changed a few values on in the .htaccess file (which solves many of the woes ccHost folks complain about and is a good way to do this with an service provider...another email for that) Anyhow, this now opens the testing phase for uploading compliant SVG files that you all are dedicate to the public domain. There are several tasks that still need to be done before we move over, however, I think we are within 1-2 days if some of you are dedicated to rocking this out. I'm inclined to move over to this new infrastructure as soon as possible...like by yesterday! The largest features we need before switching over are: 1.) export of our content from the old system to the new one 2.) SVG thumbnails 3.) writing metadata to SVG files in getid3 4.) migration of old web content from old site to the new one The tasks are listed on the wiki (http://openclipart.org/wiki/index.php/CcHost#Phase_1). How about we divide and conquer these task? Are there tasks that you all would like to sign up for, or are already working on? I will sign up for a task if you all sign up for some :) I'm thinking to do either number 4 or number 2 in the above list. ### Otherwise, one of the greatest ways you can help out is by uploading your SVG clip art to this test site now, leaving comments, testing out features, emailing the list or chatting if there are issues. ### If you have administrative access, try out the various features of the site. tileable patterns

Inkscape is really cool but there's one feature that I'd like to se, either as a plugin or part of inkscape and that is the ability to easily create tileable patterns. Given that svg supports using SVG files as patterns this would be beneficial to plenty of people. I envisage some kind of tileable mode where anything you move beyond a given side of the document appears automatically on the opposite side. This way you could preview your tile while creating it Thanks!

I have completed a first pass at updating the print dialog. It is modeled on the gimp-print dialog in having a radiobutton group to select between standard command, custom command, and print to file. I don't have a printer but printing to file works. There is no way to specify a non-default printer with the standard command, have to select custom command for that. Please check out the attached patch and let me know any issues. blur filter slider suggestion

Hi guys, I've been messing with the blur tool today and noticed a few behavioural optimisations we could do to the slider to cut back on bloating our files. the slider should lock to Increments. for example : 0.25 0.50 1.00 2.50 5.00 7.50 10.00 20.00 the user is still allowed to specify an arbitary value but it may be useful to handle filters in a similar way as we do gradient definitions. Create the <filter> def for the stddeviation when it has been set and link to that same <filter> for all future blurs if the same value. The locking of the slider comes into place because it makes the default user behaviour more optimised when only casually playing with blur settings. I guess we should think about htis . oh, also attached is a quick example i made today to show an airbrushed style effect using blurs and gradients

I notice that the OpenOffice team have now made their Windows version into an MSI package which will greatly ease the adoption of the package in University departments for example (which more commonly nowadays) often run WIndows Domains with centralized installation systems. That's right, I committed some more patches earlier this week (which sf.net's mailing list seemingly did didn't deliver). There are now the options for adobe-illustrator-cs.xml and macromedia-freehand-mx.xml in the inkscape share/keys/ folder. It would be really great to have UI in our preferences to select a different keyboard shortcuts preference. This would be a nice low hanging fruit task. Has anyone started this? If no one has started this, there are a few of steps: 1.) create a preference for which keys xml file to use 2.) create ui for selecting the keys in our Inkscape Preferences... dialog 3.) add necessary code to get keyboard shortcuts selection to work 4.) EXTRA CREDIT: for you UI to be able to create, edit and duplicate current configs so that they may be user created... Also, along these lines would be to create some simple UI for setting a default language for Inkscape from the languages we have translated. Basically, you would take the same approach as step 1-3 above...for languages, we would have to make the change active on restart...however, for keys, I'm not sure if we could make them reset during an active Inkscape process. Decoupling rendering

Here is a simple Observer-style separation of document traversal and output-specific rendering. If people don't disagree with this too much, I can spend more than 5 minutes on it and flesh this out further. If this seems reasonable, the first Context would naturally seem to be wrapped around Cairo. Contributing some CAD tools to Inkscape.

I've been using Inkscape for a couple of years now. I had inquired about adding some object snaps to Inkscape when I first started using the program, but I didn't know any C++ at the time, and didn't want to tackle the language. That has changed, since I'm now using a Linux box at home and work, in addition to my MS Windows boxes. I've been learning some C programming, and even bought a 900 page book on C++ programming. :] I volunteer as one of the project admins for an open source GIS/Mapping program. I was planning on creating a map drafting and printing extension for the program from scratch. However, someone wrote a plug-in for our program that allows us to export the data in SVG, and one of the users began producing cartographic quality maps in Inkscape! That really got my wheels turning. I am considering the possibility as using Inkscpape and perhaps Scribus as the main cartographic map production tools for our program. If this works out, I'd like to begin contributing to Inkscape as a developer. My primary areas of interest are object snapping and precision drafting/drawing tools. I'd also be interested in some advanced labeling tools, DXF import/export, layer management, and sheet layout for printing/plotting. I saw Matthew Squires was working on DXF support for Inkscape as part of Google's Summer of Code, but I didn't see any files on his SourceForge site yet. Is that project still ongoing? Is anyone else working on the areas I mentioned? (I took a look at the roadmap on the Inkscape site, but didn't see any of these things mentioned.) If you would be willing to put up with my questions, I'd be willing to help implement some of these features. :] I must warn you ahead of time, I do have a good knowledge of programming and XML, and even own a couple of textbooks on SVG, but I am a C++ rookie. I'm going to read over the Inkscape Developer's Manual posted on the wiki tonight. I'd look forward to some advice on how to get started. I think I'd like to start with the object snaps tools first. At any rate, I look forward to hearing from you guys about this, and hope I'll have the chance to improve a great open source tool I've been using for a long time. Scott Huey

The bindings are based on a concept (not the layout) from the animation software Toon Boom Studio. The idea is that the left hand never leaves the keyboard and the right hand never leaves the stylus. There are several bug reports and feature requests that show how people find the current Save and Save As combination to be cumbersome to work with, but.. reading feature requests such as #1520237, #1085718, #1282332, #1377887, #1388131 and #1511930 it is clear that there are as many ideas as reporters on what the best solution is. and often is this idea very much influenced by what other applications the reporter has used before What are the plans (or thoughts and ideas) about how Inkscape should work regarding saving and exporting files in the future? Is there an Inkscape GUI guru (group?) deciding on what the best strategy is? Is there a document describing such a common goal everyone can help work towards? There seems to be two works in progress in Svn; a new export dialog that also includes vector formats and a new save a copy dialog. My personal preference goes for extending an existing dialog, but wish to hear whether this is all part of a bigger plan.

GBoolean -> Bool commit 1 (12971)

In light of our previous attempt at the task of converting as many gbooleans to bools as possible (resulted in inkscape crashing in various circumstances), we've decided to go for a more incremental approach. I'll change a few and commit, and wait a few days for possible bugs to appear. This time around I'm also taking it much more slowly, carefully. I don't expect to have as many problems as we had before. This commit only converts 33 gbooleans to bools (also changes lots of TRUE and FALSE to true and false). This isn't too many though, and I've looked at each rather carefully, so it should be fine. However, it would still be good to have some testing done to be sure. Here are the sections which are modified, possibly inducing bugs: Undo-System: If the modifications screwed up, then this would pick up on actions that are supposed to be ignored, making the next hit of "Undo" likely do nothing, or crash, or undo something its not supposed to. To see these specific places do a search on all the code for sp_document_set_undo_sensitive. SVG/XML: Screwing this up should be pretty obvious. Hopefully. Just remember this if something goes wrong in the next few days.

Heya dudes and dudettes, It has been bothering me that there aren't icons for some menu items. I went ahead and took a stab at finishing the rest of the icons in the main menus. Please critique my new ones with your own changes...I just wanted to get the ball rolling... I added: Document Metadata, Input Devices, Select All in All Layers, Invert Selection, Deselect, Messages, Scripts, Icon Preview, Layers..., the rest of the text icons (not the best ones), About Memory... I hope you all like...Also, to all you artists and developers, adding icons is easy! 1.) open up icons.svg from the main inkscape trunk in PATH_TO_INKSCAPE/share/icons/icons.svg 2.) group your icon together and give it a good name in the object properties dialog 3.) add or edit the proper name in the PATH_TO_INKSCAPE/src/verbs.cpp 4.) make && su -c 'make install' Check and repeat 1-4 until you are happy! Oh, the Clip, Mask and Pattern subdirectory menu items still need icons. Does anyone want to take a stab at these? Also, Kees, didn't you hack in a fix so that we can have icons for the submenus. We had to peel back the gboolean -> bool changeover so y'all might have to do a 'make clean' before rebuilding Inkscape (many files were touched). Undefined sp_module_new in 0.36

A really basic C coding question! I'm attempting to compile v0.36 with the '--with-gnome-print' option, and after fixing one small bug: modules/gnome.c needed #include "helper/canvas-bpath.h" I then got to the final link step and there's just one undefined reference: src/print.c:118: undefined reference to `sp_module_new' 'sp_module_new' is defined in module.c: static SPModule * sp_module_new (GType type, SPRepr *repr); My C is very rusty... how do I make that visible in print.c? And why isn't it? ...is it because I'm using gcc 3.4? Bug during rotation

Export dialog

Hi, everyone! I suppose that this list has a very short memory, since we were talking about this about a month ago. :-) Some work has already been done toward this.. Here is a first cut: http://inkscape.org/win32/export/export-dump.png Explaining the look, first please note that this is a first attempt. The dialog is basically a SaveAs dialog, with an extra panel added. The position of the panel is a Gtk thing, not something I devised. That's just where it goes. The Gtk::Frame on the left is for the scope of the source document to export. It is output format-agnostic, and would apply to all types. Notice the blank area on the right. That is where the Preview box goes, the same as on the Open dialog. We would probably use this to display a preview of the scope of the source document. The right side currently has information common to most types of exports we would provide. It is conceivable that some of the controls on the right side could change as the result of a callback from the type-selecting Gtk::Combobox. However, of course we would want to avoid bloat. Now, I'm not really concerned with the appearance of this thing, and I'm not a GUI guru. What we need is this set of parameters to give us at least the amount of information that we have now. But the basic look of a FileChooser remains the same, and is not something we would want to waste our time coding from scratch. We are not in the toolkit business, but SVG editing. In addition, PNG exporting has been decoupled from file.cpp, so that it can be called from elsewhere than the existing dialog. There are 3 other things that we have been discussing, to support this functionality: 1) A clone-with-crop function, which will duplicate all or part of a Document according to the user's needs (left side of dialog) 2) Getting the output-specific parameters to the Output classes in Ted's extension architecture (right side) 3) (wish list) Decoupling the interpretation of the Document tree and the generation of the various output formats. This way the Document traversal only needs to be written and debugged once, and the various drawing contexts can be plugged into it. If you look in /internal, you will see a lot of redundant tree-walking code. With this decoupling, the gurus of what is in an SPDocument can determine how the tree is interpreted, and the people writing the outputs can concentrate on simpler drawing primitives. Also, the drawing commands of the contexts need only concern themselves with absolute coordinates, alleviating the need for output-writers to constantly convert coordinate spaces. Bryce, Thanks very much for taking the time to give such a detailed reply. To explain a little bit more about the situation. The official 'standard' Puppy Linux liveCD is intended to run on older PCs and to load totally into RAM. Hence my interest in a smaller Inkscape. However, Puppy is highly customisable, and various 'chubby' versions of Puppy get released. It is very easy to remaster the CD -- just download any extra packages, run the remaster-cd script, and a new squashfs file is created and burnt to CD -- and it will still all load into RAM if you have say 256M or more, or have a swap partition. So, we will still offer the latest Inkscape. But, I would like the "lite" version in the 'standard' liveCD. I downloaded 0.36 and it compiled ok. Note, I used '--without-gnome-print' -- Puppy does have libgnomeprint, libgnomecanvas, and libgnomeprintui, as required for Abiword and Gnumeric, but Inkscape seems to need more than that. Okay, Inkscape 0.36 runs, but when I choose File -> Print... from the menu, up pops a msg: "Inkscape encountered an internal error and will close now." On the commandline there is this error msg: "(inkscape:31765): CRITICAL **: sp_module_db_register: assertion 'module->id != NULL' failed" Note, in Sodipodi it does work ok. It was also compiled with '--without-gnome-print'. I'm prepared to have a go at fixing this, but I was wondering if that error message means anything to you, and if you can give me a clue where to look. I'm proposing to call this (assuming I fix the printing!) Hi all, Sorry to post this here, but today Mental posted in the devel list that 0.44.1pre1 is beeing released, althought nobody seem to react to a critical bug report in the bug tracker at sourceforge. I am talking about bug 1535218 (or should I actually call it a regression as it didn't appear in 0.44 release and was introduced in later devel builds) is beeing fixed by someone? I reported it 10 days ago, and it seems that no one is interested in fixing it... But for users, it is a showstopper, as it occurs always when the object's fill gradient is applied to object's stroke (steps to reproduce are described in the bug tracker, see http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1535218&group_id=9… ) It is still present in today's inkscape-0608151000 build, and I'd hate to see this bug make it to 0.44.1 release... Puppy Linux is extremely small, the live-CD is only 70M and we have a full suite of GUI applications, including Seamonkey, Abiword, Gnumeric and Inkscape. Up until recently we had Sodipodi in Puppy, but many people complained they did not like the user interface (although I personally find it okay). So, I went over to Inkscape, but that uses Gtkmm and the binary package is about FIVE TIMES BIGGER than Sodipodi. One of the key features of Puppy is that when booting from CD, the whole thing loads into RAM, thus freeing up the CD drive for other uses, also giving incredible speed. We use squashfs to keep it small. Our target is that Puppy must load into RAM on a 128M PC, however Puppy is now getting a bit too fat. What I would really like is to go back to Sodipodi. I will then be able to dump the Gtkmm library (about 4M uncompressed) and Inkscape (about 6M uncompressed). Sodipodi is only about 2M. To satisfy the critics and to greatly rejuvinate the Sodipodi project, redesigning the menu to a "conventional" one would be truly fantastic. That '6M' figure is for a cut-down Inkscape, with docs and inkview removed, and some other items either removed or cutdown (like the about.svg file). I contacted one of the old developers of Sodipodi and he explained that there were personality conflicts that caused the Inkscape project fork, then Sodipodi had some bursts of activity, then died. He also warned me the code is crappy in places. What I'm thinking of is a "Inkscape Lite" based on the Sodipodi code, with some improvements backported from the full Inkscape. The number one thing would be to change the menu structure to the "normal" arrangement. Is this suggestion totally outrageous? Any Inkscape developer guy with considerable experience with Sodipodi code may consider this idea to be attractive? C++ libs on win32

Hi, all. Although we have been keeping somewhat up-to-date with bugfix versions of the gtk+ C libs for the last year, the C++ libraries (libsigc++, glibmm, gtkmm) have not been updated at all in that same time, and I have been worried that a mismatch might start generating bugs. So today I built those libs atop the current gtk+ libs, and uploaded them here: http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32libs/gtk28-060820.7z You don't really -need- this one, but if you use it, there is one small difference. Since the previous gtkmm set was built with the cross-compiler, the variable GLIBMM_DLL was not defined properly. So to make the compiling and linking with DLLs work ok, we define it in Makefile.mingw.common as -DGLIBMM_DLL. In the new set, that variable exists properly, so you will get warnings that GLIBMM_DLL has been redefined. I guess in a week or so it would be good to take it out. But for people who have the new stuff it is a warning and with the old stuff, it is an error. Better safe than sorry. bob

compiling svn on slack, en_GB.po problems!

Well I don't know what changed but before I was getting errors on ja.po and zh_*.po (and equivalent .gmo files). Now it's en_GB.po that's not playing fair. Googling turned up a foreign language page that mentioned aspell so I updated that. I've also recently slapt-get updated gettext and gettext-tools (which provide msgfmt I gather). I still can't compile ... Problem with INKSCAPE_DATADIR set to "${datarootdir}"

Hi all, Inkscape SVN started recently crashing on startup since it can't find any of its share files. This is because of some defines in the generated config.h: #define INKSCAPE_DATADIR "${datarootdir}" #define PACKAGE_LOCALE_DIR "${datarootdir}/locale" Does that look wrong? I believe these should have been expanded to the value of datarootdir. Interestingly the library path is correct: #define INKSCAPE_LIBDIR "/Users/mjwybrow/ws-svn/install/lib" I don't believe I've changed automake or autoconf versions since it last worked for me. This has just appeared after updating from SVN -- I hadn't done an SVN update for a few weeks. Any ideas? Cheer, Michael

Problem compiling with inkboard (win32)

Hi, I'm having a linking problem when compiling the latest repository revisions, unless I do it without inkboard support (commenting out line CFLAGS += -DWITH_INKBOARD on Makefile.mingw.common ). I think it happens with all revisions since there was a major change to the src/jabber_whiteboard contents last week. It's probably something with my configuration, since noone else seems affected. Can anyone tell me what could be causing this? The following is the error I get, I hope it's enough information, if it isn't let me know. Hello Ulf, Thank you for your reply. I solved my problem temporarily by hand (using pstoedit). Now I asked me about the other way: svg to ps/eps/ps? Export in Inkscape works but transparency is lost and svg2pdf is rastering the image. Could you (or anyone from the list) tell me a tool which can convert directly svg to one of the postscript formats (without rastering, maintaining the vector information), ideally under windows or linux? Hey all, just subscribed so as to post this issue. I've updated gettext and cairo and now can get alot further with my make, but not all the way. Adding clippaths to the Ps/Pdf exporters

Hi, I am in need some advice and suggestions from an extensions expert.. I would like to improve the pdf exporter by handle clippaths (and maybe later masks), but I am having a hard time figuring out how I best can go about to add such features. ( There is no code for this in the postscript exporter that I can copy :-) Should it be possible to continue using a "print" extension or do I need to start use an "output" extension for this? I understand that an output extension is handed the full document tree at once. A print extension on the other hand is given a single path at a time together with the needed style, transformation matrix, bounding box, and so on. But I don't see if and how a print extension can get information about the needed clipping path. If there is no information about the clippath available for print extensions would it be okay to add this (by changing the interface)? Is it then better with a new set_clippath method or an extra clippath parameter for the fill and stroke methods? Ulf

Hello, I've just discover inkscape (trying to escape from xfig), It's great but I still have two suggestions : - the possibility to adapt only some of the properties in the Fill and Stroke window. I've two curves : solid and dashed. I select the two curves, adapt the width, press enter. The two curves have now the same width (Good) but the dashed is now solid (Bad). It would be great if only the properties that have been modified by the user where adapted. - The most important thing for a graphic editor is the facility to insert the result in LaTeX (ok, it's a personal opinion). It is already possible to save as "LaTeX with PSTricks macros" but with this option it is not possible to include LaTex code (such as $\frac{a}{b}$) as text in Inkscape and have it interpreted by LaTeX. The idea is to seperate the figure in two : on one side all the text objects and on the other side everything else. The rest is exported in an eps file. The text objects are inserted in a .tex file which includes the eps. Something like : \begin{picture}(0,0)% \includegraphics{the_eps_file_with_everything_except_texts.eps}% \end{picture}% \begingroup \setlength{\unitlength}{0.02bp}% \begin{picture}(47600,21050)(0,0)% \put(11700,7000){\makebox(0,0)[c]{\strut{}The_first_text_object}}% \put(13200,9700){\makebox(0,0)[c]{\strut{}The_first_text_object}}% (...) \end{picture}% \endgroup \endinput With this, the user has only to include a .tex file to have the graphics and all the text objects interpreted by LaTeX. I assume this should not be too complicated. The export in eps is already done. It remains to access the position and the text of all text objects to write the .tex file. eps import?

Dear inkscape developers, I excessively searched the forums for my question but found no complete answer. So I hope you don't mind me asking you directly. The problem is importing eps into inkscape under Windows XP. The extension-errors.log says for "EPS Input" that "gs" is not found. Since I already have gs installed, I additionally put it into PATH but that didn't help. Could you tell me what to do to get the extension (and the others, too) work? Is it sufficient to install the applications and put them into PATH or does inkscape need libraries (dlls under windows)? If yes, where to get them without recompiling? Or do I have to recompile inkscape for extending it? You would greatly help me if you could explain me how the extension mechanism works so that I can install the necessary extensions. Okay, last night I merged pretty much everything I wanted to get in for this release. Does anyone else have stuff they want to slot in for 0.44.1? Now's your last chance. Once the last of that stuff is in, we'll notify the translators mailing list so they can get any translation issues sorted. Meanwhile, we test, validate some of the packaging changes which were comitted, and once they're finished we can tag and release. Do you think we should do any 0.44.1 prereleases to get wider testing? -mental

Thanks for the info. I have moved to kubuntu 6.06 and someone has kindly made a .deb file so I am in 0.44 heaven now. The thing I get from this thread is that Linux distros move so quickly, they are having their libraries and other wobbly bits coded so rapidly that it's impossible to keep pace with them all, let alone just one of them. This is due to the obviously limited resources and voluntary nature of those (like you guys) writing OSS applications to run on Linux. In an ironic way this speed of improvement of Linux is a strength for Windows. I demonstrate this by means of Inkscape 0.44 and how one can with relatively no trouble develop for Windows and release any old time and users like me can pick up the binary and run it. No mess. No fuss. That's the contrast for me I suppose. I'll stick with Linux thanks :) That means sticking with these weird version situations. I wonder if the situation will ever reach a balance, where the vital libs don't move so quickly because they are finished, done, complete and so Linux won't change so massively internally and will approach a kind of binary stability like win has now? Perhaps I've got the wrong idea completely! Anyway, thanks for your time. D.

Can I Distribute ?

Hello Folks, I am confused by the GPL and issues like derivative software. I would like to distribute a bit of code to the public that produces an SVG image but I want to be able to rasterize the image for users unwilling or unable to read it with Firefox, IE/ASV or another agent. My thought was to include an unaltered Inkscape binary and use it's command-line to translate the SVG to PNG. Can I do this and credit the Inkscape development community, meet the terms of the GPL and keep my unrelated code private? Thanks, Tad

Hello all, Thanks for the patience on the FC3 threads. Ya'll convinced me to shifty over to a new distro and I went to Kubuntu 6.06 yesterday. Have had some hell with merging home folders, but nothing too deadly. Imagine my horror to find that the latest inkscape in the apt repos is 0.43-something! The same one I had on FC3 :Mad spinny eye smiley here: So, I understood that ubuntu was kinda the dev distro (Windows aside) of choice, surely there must be debs of 0.44 by now? How do debs normally get to ubuntu repos? Is it a committee kinda thing, with a central scrutinizer or can you quickly update a package if you make a new deb? So, what's the best way for me to get ink 0.44 (official release vers) up and running on *ubuntu 6.06 ? Cos i'm really tired of Windows edging Linux out on it's own software! Best, Donn.

I think it's time we did a prerelease of 0.44.1; this will give us an opportunity to shake out any new issues, and give the translators an opportunity to get their work in before 0.44.1 final. I've updated the release notes on the wiki and bumped the version numbers in the 0.44 branch, but we still need to do the rest of the dist process and tag it all. Someone also needs to document on CreatingDists the process of getting the release notes into the NEWS file as well. Volunteers? -mental

I just committed a small change that increases the number of checks in those areas and fails with g_return_if_fail() if the pointers are NULL. Take care, John

Joining the Software Freedom Conservancy

Hi all, Inkscape's been growing by leaps and bounds this last year, thanks to all the efforts of its community. Part of the growth process requires formalizing certain things - such as how we handle Inkscape's finances. Up to now, I've handled Inkscape's finances as part of my own. However, with the income we'll be getting from Google, and the increasing amount of donations we've been receiving, now is a good time to set Inkscape up with a more formal way to manage its money. The Inkscape admins have considered a number of options. The one we like best is to join the Software Freedom Conservancy (http://conservancy.softwarefreedom.org/). For the past few months I've been working with the SFC, and just recently learned we've been accepted! Here's more info: http://inkscape.org/conservancy/ However, before this becomes official, there are three things I think we need to do: First is to give the community the opportunity to voice any questions or concerns before anything gets set. Second, we need to review the agreement that the SFC requires us to sign. Third, we need to select a set of official representatives who will sign the Agreement papers that cause Inkscape to become part of the SFC. As part of this, we need to decide how official (monetary) decisions will be made by Inkscape. This is required by the SFC mainly so there is a defined way for determining how funds will be spent. Do we require a full concensus of the Inkscape representatives? A simple majority? Or is the word of any one representatives enough? My own feeling is that a simple majority (3 out of 4 reps) is enough. We also will need to have a defined procedure for adding/removing representatives. NEW: interruptible display for better interactivity

Just committed: * Interruptible display: Previously, Inkscape could not do anything until it finishes the current screen redraw. Now the redraw is made interruptible, so that Inkscape responds to mouse and keyboard input and can abort the current redraw and start over if you do some screen-changing operation. As a result, Inkscape now feels much snappier and more interactive. So, while redraw is not really any faster now, it _feels_ much faster, especially for things like zooming, scrolling, etc. Enjoy. I fixed a couple bugs that were exposed by this change, but there may be more. In particular I suspect there might be a crash when you quit Inkscape while it's redrawing. I got this crash a couple times but it's very hard to nail it down. If you can cause it reproducibly please let me know. Other than that, it's working perfectly for me in the last few days. Aquify the OSX UI?

Hi there, I was wondering if it'd be possible to use a more Aqua-ish theme for the OSX version in the next release? I think that The Gimp includes a GTK theme which makes it blend in more with the OSX desktop. I believe that an aperance that blends in a bit more would make it more acceptable to OSX users. Binary compatibility issues

As Donn has discovered Inkscape no longer installs on older versions of Fedora. I worked with him off list to find out why. There are two separate problems: * Use of __gnu_cxx::__pool (or something like that, going from memory). This is probably being used implicitly and is another case of the GNU people deciding to "helpfully" upgrade your dependencies for you. * Use of GOption API Together these cause the requirements of the binary to be higher than what the autopackage things they are. thanks -mike
