Text toolbar

I have two problems showing up on the new text toolbar. On Ubuntu 8.10 I get no combo boxes showing up at all for the font family and size. On Ubuntu 9.10 I am getting all fonts warned as not being on the system and that they are ignored to not crash pango. I'm poking around at the 8.10 one to see if there's anything I can pinpoint as the cause. For the 9.10 problem, I was thinking there is a better chance that others might be seeing the same issue.

node tool testing

Krzysztof, I finally found time to test the new node tool. Overall it feels great, but of course I found many small and not so small things to fix :) #1 is my personal pet peeve, if you can't see it please just give me pointers to the code which passes events up and I'll have a look myself. I'll probably have more as I do more testing, but here's the fist batch: 1. Bug: Middle-button dragging and Shift-middle button zoom rubberband still do not work. Are you using a mouse with a middle button to test? They work in Selector but not in Node. 2. Lost feature: when rotating/scaling nodes by keys and one node is mouseovered, it is used as center of rotation and scaling. 3. Lost feature: when ctrl+alt+dragging a node, it should slide along the handles _and their perpendiculars_. 4. Lost feature: when ctrl+alt+dragging a node, and it has a linear segment on one side, it should slide along the continuation of that segment. 5. Lost feature: node sculpting. Will you work on it, or do you want me to work on porting it? 6. Bug: select a single node and rotate it by [] with or without Alt: it rotates around some random center far away, instead of around itself. 7. Lost feature: When rotating a handle with Ctrl, it now snaps to the original position and 15 deg increments from that original position. The previous behaviour was: snap to origin, its opposite and perpendicular, to vertical/horizontal, and to 15 deg steps from vertical. This is much more useful because more often, I use Ctrl to snap it to vertical or some simple angle like 60 deg. 8. Lost feature: create a cusp node next to a linear segment; press Shift+S; it becomes semismooth, aligned with the segment (correct); now press Shift+S again; old behavior is to make it fully smooth, extending the second handle, but your tool does nothing. 9. Lost feature: Rotating a handle with Shift before allowed to rotate the second handle by the same angle, thus rotating a cusp node as a whole; now it does nothing. 10. Suggested feature: now that we can edit multiple paths, Ctrl+A when nothing selected should do the same in Node tool as in Selector, instead of doing nothing as now. 11. Performance: Create a path with thousands of nodes (paste text, convert to path, combine), select it in Node tool: notice how slow it all becomes, freezing for many seconds, as you simply move your mouse over the path. My guess is that it calculates something on each motion event and does not cache the results. The old tool also wasn't very snappy in such situation but it was much better, only freezing for a couple seconds at most with the same file (test it!) partly because it cached the livarot representation of the path it used for proximity/over the path calculations. 12. Lost feature: the statusbar used to say how much total nodes are there ("2 of 5 nodes selected") and, for a single node, its type (smooth, cusp, auto). For multiple subpaths it said e.g. "2 of 9 nodes selected in 2 of 3 subpaths". Now it only says "Selected 2 nodes" (which is also a wrong word order, suggesting an action instead of a state). Could you please just copy this part from the old node tool? 13. Suggested feature: now that we can select multiple objects, the statusbar hints must reflect that, in the same way as subpaths, e.g. "2 of 9 nodes selected in 2 of 3 subpaths in 1 of 2 selected paths", or simply "2 of 9 nodes selected in 1 of 2 selected paths" if there are no subpaths involved. 14. Bug: when dragging a node handle, statusbar erroneously says "Move by" instead of "Node handle:" as did the old tool. 15. When mouseovering a node, it says "click to select" even if it is already selected. I'd like to copy this from the old tool as well, which suggested various modifiers for dragging instead. 16. On the node deletion discussion, I found the current behavior satisfactory: if you Del, you get curved approximation; if you Ctrl+del you get linear segment from linears. I think this is logical (unless I miss something). 17. UI suggestion: since the show/hide seltrans handles button belongs to visualization, it should be moved to the right end of the controls bar, next to node handles and node outline toggles. 18. Crash: draw a path; draw a path and apply it as mask; draw another and apply as clippath; go to node tool; enable both mask and clippath editing; drag a mask node; drag a clippath node; drag a node of the path itself; undo 4 times - crash. 19. UI bug: create with Pen a Spiro path; now switch to Node tool - the green outline of the source path is visible always, even when "show outline of path" toggle is off and "show path parameter" was never pressed. Also, as we discussed in the summer, I suggested a purple color for LPE parameter paths, so they are not confused with clippaths. 20. Crash (somewhat hard to reproduce): With Pencil in Spiro mode, create a path with just two nodes (click, click). Now create a curved doodle path (unrelated bug in Pencil: you need to deselect first path before drawing second, otherwise they will become joined!). Now select both paths, go to Node. Select the end node of the linear path and start node of the curved path. Mouseover the latter and press Shift+J. Then press Ctrl+Z while still mouseovering the joined node. Confirmation of rendering problem needed

It's regarding this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/455302 I recently commited a fix, but now it appears there might be a new problem with this filter. It doesn't look directly related to the fix to this particular bug, but it perhaps it has something to do with one my other fixes (or someone else's). Unfortunately I cannot reproduce the problem, so I'd like to know who CAN reproduce it (and how). If you can reproduce the problem any information that might help pin down the exact revision in which the problem was introduced would help. (Obviously it's also interesting if you CANNOT reproduce the problem.)

(the mails that say: "You received this bug notification because you are a member of Inkscape Bug Team, which is subscribed to Inkscape.") Issues with SVG

Hello people. I've started using SVG for some of the graphics on my pages, and encountered some problems - probably due to ignorance... but not for lack of trying to find answers: 1) If I 'embed' an SVN image in a page, and want to use it as a link to somewhere else, I find that the image isn't sensitive. I'm using Firefox 3.6 - I thought embedding was ok for the majority of browsers? 2) If I define the size smaller than the original image, I get scrollbars in Firefox. I thought SVN was scaleable? Or are the images only scaleable to larger sizes - never seen that mentioned... I'd appreciate pointers to documentation for either or both issues. Thanks John

Ruler LPE giving new rendering result

How to access viewport dimensions?

I've fixed Inkscape to actually respect the filterUnits (and primitiveUnits) propertie(s), but now I need to be able to access the viewport dimensions for the filtered object... As far as I have been able to find this is only available reliably from SPItemCtx. But for a filter I need to access this not for the filter itself, but rather for the filtered object... Any help would be appreciated. Getting this right would fix the following bug btw.: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/229246

Advertising at StackOverflow

Hello, Disclaimer: *This is no advertisement.* If it doesn't get clear from the following, I'm in no way associated with the owners of StackOverflow.com. (I mention this, because after reading the mail again, it could be interpreted the wrong way.) The Q&A platform StackOverflow offers open source projects free ad space to recruit new developers [1]. The method is quite simple: If you want to have an ad there, place it as answer to the question linked as [1] and hope for other people to upvote it. After a certain threshold of upvotes it gets published for free on stackoverflow.com. Since Inkscape hasn't got an ad proposal there, yet, I thought I'd suggest one. It must be 220px x 220px and GIF or PNG, and my suggestion is [2]. If noone on the list objects (especially against using the Inkscape logo) I'd upload the proposal to meta.stackoverflow.com during the weekend. If there are suggestions for other banners, mine can easily be exchanged afterwards. I write this mail just because I don't want to do the ad kind of behind the back of the Inkscape developers. By the way: What would be your suggestion for the backlink the ad should point to? The wiki? The Inkscape homepage? I'm working against a clean debian stable environment now, I think. The current problem appears to be with an undocumented dependency on ImageMagick (I think on an old version of ImageMagick). GSoC Entry - Inkscape Export Pane

Hey folks; I had submitted a second proposal last Friday, and though I was very busy this weekend, I now have found the time to ask for input on the new one. I noticed nobody replied to my earlier message, so I'll just reintroduce myself. I've been using Inkscape for years, and have done a fair amount of work in it. This alone doesn't qualify me for application to the GSoC, so I'll just leave this link to Nanoblok, a project I've worked on for quite some time, to demonstrate my ability to write JavaScript: http://code.google.com/p/nanoblok/ I know Inkscape has the capability to use JavaScript extensions, and I've noticed a couple of files written in that language in the source, but I most likely won't be using that when working with what I want to do, and I recognize this. What I want to do is, well, to enhance the export system of Inkscape, make it more intuitive and integrated by merging the Export As and Save As dialogs together into a single pane, with selection features that were developed for the bitmap exporter also being able to work with vector export / saving. One problem with the current system this would solve is that Save As might make the user feel they can reload using that format and not lose anything, whereas the only original document with all their settings and information would be an Inkscape SVG. So, by labeling all other formats, both bitmap and vector, as Export, and placing them under a single dialog, there is less confusion, as well as the opportunity to more easily add additional formats and functionality. Misaligned PDF export

Hello all, Please see https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/562592. There is a pretty important bug in the PDF export. Currently, paths with transparency are misaligned. Does someone know more about this? I've already done some digging, but I'm stuck. I'd greatly appreciate someone else's help. Thanks, Johan

Hi everyone. I upload inkscape builds for windows to modevia from time to time and i'm glad to do this. No doubt about that. But I'm on vacation from 22. of April till 16. of May and i'm not able to upload these builds during this time. Can someone do this during my vacation? He or she must have access on modevia.com to do this. I can try to do this, but i'll travel through Florida and i don't know if i can establish a reliable internet connection. assertion violation in new inkscape build

I got an assertion violation in a build of the latest inkscape: $ inkscape Assertion failure: mark.c:642 assertion failure Aborted (core dumped) 134 $ No luck googling this error text as far as I could tell. I'm not even sure which package mark.c is in, it doesn't show up anywhere in inkscape or any of the many dependencies I needed to build. how do you guys use Boehm with gtk?

I've tried pretty hard in the past to come up with a combination of gtk and Boehm that works, but I never got stable results. I'm really curious what combination of Boehm features and glib/gtk features you are using? I guess that since you don't require specially built glib/gtk you aren't using the allocator specifiers or build-time allocation settings of glib? Perhaps you use Boehm only for your own glib-independent memory pools? One of my dreams is to have a nice garbage-collected C development setup, but it seems to require every library to be rebuilt of LD_PRELOAD'ed in some tricky way... Improved boundingbox calculation

Hi all, I just committed an improved bbox calculation when SPItem::RENDERING_BBOX precision is requested. Now it correctly includes stroke endcaps. This fixes an important bug: when creating a pattern from selected objects, the bbox calculation was not accurate enough for paths with butt caps. This meant it was not easy to make a pattern of a plus to create a hatch fill pattern. (the plusses would not connect with each other) Now this works as easy as it should. I have also increased the precision of the bbox calculation for fitting the canvas to the selection and for turning the selection into a marker. Note that the improved RENDERING_BBOX calculation takes more time than before (in fact, RENDERING_BBOX used to be the same as APPROXIMATE_BBOX). Ciao, Johan

Hello, My name is Matthew A. Todd. I am a second year computer science student at UCSD interested in working on Inkscape as part of Google Summer of Code. During my use of Inkscape previously, I had wanted a couple of changes/feature additions. I would like the chance to add these features, with some help, as my project in GSoC. I'm posting here for feedback regarding my ideas. I don't have enough experience to know how long it would take to implement them. I don't even know if others besides myself would even find such functionality useful. First idea (pen tool): I primarily use the pen tool, and would like to add the following to it: When drawing a curve, often times I place a node then decide I want to move the node's position. In Adobe Illustrator, this is accomplished by simply pressing a key (the space key.) I would like to add this ability to Inkscape. Currently, this is already possible through the use of the arrow keys. But allowing the user to move the node with the mouse would increase ease of use because the user wouldn't have to take his or her hand off the mouse. Also it would allow him or her to move the node more quickly. And he or she could still use the arrow keys if desired. Because the arrow keys method already exists, adding the use of the mouse is by no means of high importance. But several times I have desired such functionality. Second idea (layers dialog): I find the layers dialog to be a little cumbersome. Its not possible to simply move layers up and down by dragging them. Instead an user has to click a button or press a key combination. I think adding this small feature will increase ease of use because then the user doesn't have to click multiple times if there are many layers. He or she could simply just drag the layer to the desired location. The layer dialog doesn't show what is in a layer. So currently, the only option is to hide all other layers, which still isn't a great solution. Adding the ability to inspect items in a layer and move them in z-order or perhaps even move them to other layers, would make layers work better. I'm thinking of something would look like a tree view. Again, I came over from Adobe Illustrator, so my idea of what it would like is similar to how Illustrator's layer dialog, but it need not be. Hello! I thought I'd finally send out a word or two and introduce myself. My name is Peter, I'm a second-year computer-science student at the Royal Institute of Technology here in Sweden. I've been programming casually for a few years before school, but most things I've done have either been simple or been abandoned. Though as a last-year project for high school, I made a simple fast Guitar-Hero clone in C. I'm also currently working on a game with a friend, which is slowly coming together. I'm making a proposal with Google Summer of Code to create a new New-From-Template dialog. I think Inkscape has a good interface, and it's one that I'd definitely want to help improve. Without previous experience with the code base, it's also a project that I find feasible to finish. A template menu, I think, is a good thing, so it's a part that I'd want to keep. I just think it needs to become structured into categories as well. So if you just need a static template for a CD, you can go to New.. -> Covers -> CD. In case this proposal gets accepted, I'd want to regularly provide something for feedback, either from this list or a mentor, wherever suitable. I think the interface is important, so this needs to be something that everyone would find easy to use. Also, I'm very interested any ideas you may have. (: Best to mention: I submitted a patch that resolves the following wishlist ticket: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/43730 This patch reports export results to the main window status bar. To have it report properly, I had to change sp_export_png_file's return type, as suggested, to an enum. It now returns EXPORT_OK, for a successful export, EXPORT_ERROR=0 for an error, and EXPORT_ABORTED for a canceled overwrite. I think it's a good change, because it makes this dialog more verbose. I hope you agree. Existing code checks for a false value, if(! sp_export_png_file...), which still works, same as before. I'd be happy to answer any and all questions you might have! Mac OS X: osx-dmg.sh - osascript: dmg_set_style.scpt

Hello everybody, I tried to dmg inkscape 047 X11 - but ended up with an image, which contains a link to /Applications and a folder called "Contents" - which seems not to be a .app bundle. When running the osx-dmg.sh, I get the message: osascript: dmg_set_style.scpt: No such file or directory In fact, the dmg_set_style.scpt cannot be found on my machine, it looks as if it were contained by earlier source packages and dropped recently. Could somebody be so kind and mail me the script - or - in the case - guide me to another solution of that problem. Yours, Wolf

It would be possible to have the document format version number equal to the Bazaar revision in which it was first introduced. However, this would complicate working on the backwards compatibility fixes in branches. I think a simple number increasing from 1 would be the best way to go. GSOC proposal - Improve GUI for transformation center

There is plenty of information for the project goal and plan. Later discussion, confirmation on tasks, and further input may help me to keep in the right track in the implementation. As well, if there is any time left (I guess there would be), I would like to work on adjusting origin of document coordinates, and allowing math operations for spin boxes. The beginning of April is often the busiest time for students in Canada. It will be much better in the summer (May to August). Last year, I completed a 10+ page proposal for Gimp in the last day. This project focuses on improving and modifying GUI for transformation centers to solve existing issues and enhance precision and flexibility. In the three month GSOC period, first I will discuss with Inkscape designers and decide a GUI mockup as an implementation guide. With the further analysis and detailed plan, possible refactoring will be done. A control of precision of moving the transformation center will be implemented. Center coordinates would be set numerically. There will be a 9-button-matrix widget that is used to quickly move the center to 9 positions, and a separate tab in the Transform dialog, for adding XY fields using a couple spin-buttons for X and Y. Then, the linkage between the 9-button-widget and the spin-buttons can be done. Another relevant projects will be analyzed and implemented (i) adjust origin of coordinates of document, and (ii) allow math operations (sum, substraction, multiplication, division) inside the spin boxes for Height, Width, X, Y. All implementations will be tested and ensure accuracy, flexibility, and robustness. All code produced will follow the Inkscape coding style. Documentation will be done during coding. BACKGROUND AND SKILLS I am interested in working on the "transformation-anchors" project in GSOC this year. Inkscape is one of my favorite open source software. I have similar work before, to have the default rotation center to be the geometric center of all shapes. Anchor coordinates are a part of the object (drawing) attributes. It can be adjusted, so that geometrical transformations, rotation, translation, scaling, and shearing, can be performed with the updated center. The following is a few points about my background. · Master student in Computer Science (GPA: 4.0/4.0) in Canada, thesis: medical image processing and 3D reconstruction. · Successfully completed GSOC 2009 for a Gimp project, Advanced GUI for brush dynamics. · Four years full-time work experience in programming and architecture · Played key roles in technology R&D and innovation in image processing, vector graphics, 3D modeling, and CAD I have developed vector-based graphics editors both from scratch and on existing large applications. One of them is for a leading manufacturing company in Canada. For example, a graphics editor uses customized XML formats, have OOP architecture design to deal with all shapes/primitives using object classes (e.g. rectangle, ellipse, closed-path with arcs and lines, curves), and allow SVG and DXF (Solidworks drawing file) import and export. I have used Inkscape and SVG at work for one year (e.g. for SVG work, and GUI and HCI design example). One of my contributions for this software is to replace the previous raster based image editor with vector based editor using custom XML format. Every year, hundreds of customers use it for industrial designing, including NASA, Boeing, Google, Microsoft, MIT, US Army, GE, GM, Lockheed Martin, and many more. The company can product near anything that is made using the software. Meanwhile, the R&D goal was to provide the software that reflects what products can be made. Therefore, it is high level quality software that provides flexibility and precision. A few highlights of my work: · Completed the release of version 3.1 within 1.5 months of hire, with minimal input · “accomplished tasks the first day that took half a month before; amazing” – President · “The good news is, you are on the top.” – Chairman, in a review for R&D team performance Besides this software, I have developed dozens of image and video editors. When I worked as Lead Developer with 2D-3D Video Inc. for two years, I worked on image processing, and video editing software, and 2D to 3D image/video conversion. I have led the development of 3D movie player on iPhone/iPod Touch, and LG 42-inch 3D TV. The technology is used to convert image or video and generate 3D viewing effects without 3D glasses required. I have developed new algorithms and techniques in image segmentations, interpolations, 3D reconstruction, and missing structure generation. Since the work deals with different shapes, it has a vector graphics sense. I used XML to store and process 3D structure and wireframes. Technically, I am good in C++. I have done some work using the following. XML: I have used it for many projects, using C++, Python, C# and Java. Libraries used: .NET, DOM, JDOM, Minidom. It is used in my thesis and each of my jobs at work. SVG: I have written a SVG viewer before. GTK+: I have experience with it in the Gimp GSOC project. Git and SVN: I used it at work before. Bazaar: I tried it, and it is very similar with SVN and Git. PROBLEMS AND IMPLEMENTATION PLAN A well designed GUI and interaction of transformation anchor manipulation is very important for Inkscape. Currently, the rotation center (in an example of transformation) can be dragged freely. However, where it is dragged to cannot be precisely defined, except eye-balling roughly. There needs to be new UI facilities with an intuitive design that allows the precise adjustment of the center. This precision control is expected to be useful to many Inkscape users, such as Xfig users. In the Transform dialog, XY fields need to be added as a separate tab. A 9-button-matrix widget, which is intuitive and helpful to users, will be implemented to assist moving the center among nine locations easily with one click. To prevent errors or misleading, there should not be center of rotation and anchor as two different entities. A single tool should be used, which is marked by the cross. Then, all transformations should refer to it. Since this object exists in the code, a list of better UI facilities can be added to move it. As well, the cross can be automatically saved into SVG for each object. A simple test was done to confirm this. The center of rotation, marked as cross, can be moved to a different location. It is saved for the object, so that when closing and reopening this SVG file, the cross (center of rotation) stays where it is left. In the SVG, the fields or attributes of the path object shows: inkscape:transform-center-x="7.6874748" inkscape:transform-center-y="-3.2402241" / Another quick test was done for moving the transformation centers. - For rotate and skew, different centers will give different results. - For scale, moving the center gives the same results, with the same transform values. - Transform using handles is correct. A simple drag keeps the center as it was, and Shift+drag scales around the rotation center. Obviously, there is an issue in the consistency with scaling. It does not work correctly if scaling by numbers. Selector toolbar, or the mouse tool in the top left interface, uses the top right corner, while Transform scales around the geometric center. The correct way is to use rotation center for scaling, with X/Y in selector toolbar displaying the coordinates of the center. The above issues will be fixed. The UI needed for rotation center XY coordinates is a couple Gtk-Spin-Buttons for X and Y plus a unit selector, defaulting to the document units. Since there is already the unit selector for X, Y, Height and Width, it may be used without writing a new one. After the 9-button-widget is used to move the X/Y coordinates, the spinbuttons should be updated to reflect the selection of one of nine anchors. Hence, the linkage is required for the 9-button-widget and the spinbuttons. It was pointed out that there were two other relevant projects related to this one: - adjust origin of coordinates of document - allow math operations (sum, subtraction, multiplication, division) inside the spin boxes for Height, Width, X, Y. I believe that it would be more beneficial if I work on this two during GSOC. The main focus of the project is on transformation centers, and the above two will be analyzed and planned, when transformation center tasks are half way through. I will propose another implementation plan for them, with a reasonable class structure design/rewrite. I will work on the two after completing the transformation center project. If there is no time to finish all of these in three months, I will try to make sure on-going work is easy to do. After the three months of work, I may be interested to continue contribution. At some point later, it may become clear what can be done, when unknowns are solved. It was suggested that the math operations can be taken from GIMP 2.7.0+. It can be done easily with my previous experience in Gimp contribution. Taking code from open source is something that I have done for many times, both for Master thesis and at-work programs. Recently, I took some open source code of spline interpolations into my thesis. Translating math operations into C++ is doable too. I do porting of different languages on daily bases. TASKS AND TIME TABLE Goal: Improve GUI for transformation centers for precision and flexibility 1. Communication. May 10 – May 20. Communication with the mentor. Code review on relevant source code, class structure. 2. Studying. May 21 – May 25. Study Inkscape development workflow, coding style, committing process. Study libraries required. 3. Reaserch. May 26 – June 6 Analysis of the architecture. Discuss and decide a GUI mockup as an implementation guide. Get familiar with sample SVG files and GUI mock-up that Pajarico has. Preparing a list of implementation. Intuitive GUI design. 4. Coding and implementing. June 7 – July 17 Possible refactoring. Precision of center moving. Fix the issues for scaling around different centers. Allow setting the center coordinates numerically Add 9-button-matrix widget Add XY fields in a separate tab of the Transform dialog Implement XY coordinates UI, a couple Gtk-Spin-Buttons for X and Y. Ensure the linkage between the 9-button-widget and the spinbuttons. Display coordinates and values, take XY input from users, and allow undo and redo 5. Second stage implementation. July 18 – July 31. Further analysis of two relevant projects: 1) adjust origin of coordinates of document 2) allow math operations (sum, substraction, multiplication, division) inside the spin boxes for Height, Width, X, Y. Have another implementation plan for them, with a reasonable class structure design/rewrite. Implement them. 8. Overall debugging, code optimization and further improvements. August 1 - August 10. 9. Further optimization. August 11 - August 15. 10. Documentation and clean up. August 16 - August 20. Problem of chatting in IRC

Hi, I have a question about chatting in IRC. In windows, it did not work for me. So, I just tried XChat in Linux. Now I can see other people chatting in the channel. But I cannot send messages there. Coordinate system fix

Hello In revision 9288 I fixed the inverted coordinate system bug, starting from a patch by Thomas Holder. https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/170049 While this is a rather invasive change, fixing bugs caused by removing the coordinate inversion is simple (often it boils down to tweaking a single line of code), so I think we'll manage to fix any remaining regressions before the release. GSoC: KML <-> SVG Translation

Hi everyone, I'm interested in applying to create an KML - SVG converter. KML and SVG are similar enough that it makes sense for there to be a way to convert from one to the other. My plan would be: >From now until the end of week 1 or 2: Study both formats and work-out the equivalents between KML and SVG. I know there are features of KML - namely, placemark descriptions, which will not convert directly to SVG. There are probably other features too. I'll try to deal with these in any time I have remaining at the end. I'll also need to work out a way to convert the coordinates systems, and deal with sizing the image - using the KML coordinates, the image would be very small, in a very large document. Then, develop a command-line app that will actually do the conversion. I'll be using C++. I haven't decided on an XML library yet - any suggestions? * Plan the structure of the program. * Focussing first on KML -> SVG, gradually add tags to convert, and check they work correctly. * Once KML -> SVG works, add SVG -> KML. Should be a case of reversing the existing conversion functions. * Write some usage documentation. Once the command-line program is working, I'll start on giving it a GUI. I can't seem to find anything about what UI library Inkscape itself uses - can anybody tell me? It would be better to use the same one, to make maintenance easier. The GUI will send commands to the command-line program, to keep the two separate, and so that Inkscape itself can use the command-line one at some point if needed. * Design the UI. * Implement it. * Write some user documentation. Deliverables: * A command line program that can convert SVG to KML, and back, successfully. * (Probably) A GUI to go with the command-line program. If I get time: * Allow importing/exporting as KML from within Inkscape. * Find ways of handling 'placemark' KML elements, and any others that do not convert easily to SVG, so that a user can convert to SVG, edit, and convert back, without losing anything. Question on Frost - is this a known issue?

I am new to Inkscape, but have been involved in some open source projects (mainly Java-ish stuff). I downloaded the latest Windows release and tried it out. I am wondering if this is a known issue, since it is so badly broken. (Inkscape April 3 drop, Windows Vista) I am trying to use a Wacom Bamboo tablet. Inkscape looks like it recognizes the tablet, but I can't seem to get it to work with the caligraphy tool. My tablet works with 0.47, after some fiddling. Additionally, there are two GUIs for setting up input hardware now. The old one looks like 0.47, and the new one looks very cool, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to make it work. And keep in mind, it could be user error - I am new to Inkscape. But I am thinking that a Wacom Bamboo tablet should "just work" with a drawing application... Sooooo... are the hardware input dialogs still "in-work"? If not, I'll be happy to provide details and screen shots. I just don't want to clutter your bug tracking system before checking. Thanks! Funding budget for improve text-block

I'm using Inkscape in a new business I am working on, and I have discovered some blocking-features that are missing (at least, I have not found them in the 0.47 version of Inkscape: - Vertical alignment property for a text block, so text can be shown at the top, the bottom, or centered. - Kerning adjustment for texts. - Tracking adjustment for texts. - Word-spacing adjustment for texts. My new project really need these features from Inkscape, so we'd like to provide funds for the project so they can be included as soon as possible. As we are currently in the process of getting funds from investors, I'd like to know what would be the approximated budget for implementing these features, and how log it would take (approximately). Reducing dependency on SP_ACTIVE_DESKTOP

(This happened to also fix bug #270623 ""Fill and Stroke" panel is mirrored between open windows") I now have that tracking extracted into a stand-alone class, and have already reused it in a different panel. That new code is at src/ui/dialog/desktop-tracker.h src/ui/dialog/desktop-tracker.cpp Aside from fixing the immediately visible problems such as bug #270623, other improvements also happened as a consequence of the change. One of these is that prior to this a change in one view of one document would cause a cascade of event processing in all other dialogs for all views in all documents. Things had been all wiring themselves to the global inkscape application instance and listening for changes there. After switching to the new DesktopTracker the updated dialogs only are invoked when their specific desktop has a change (in selection, pertinent contents, document reload, etc). And of course there is the added benefit of getting things a little more multithreading friendly. That will be good too. So far I've not gone out to switch all of our dialogs over to this paradigm. Krzysztof expressed proper concern that we might expose some latent bugs in the process of switching. Since we are very close to 0.48, we should probably only change code that is actively being worked on, so we touch only things that we are looking at and are observing the behavior of. Oh, and if anyone does happen to be working in any code that happens to use SP_ACTIVE_DESKTOP or SP_ACTIVE_DOCUMENT, one minor tweak with a lot of benefit would be to make sure those are only used at the top of a function and are stored to a local variable. Then the function can work against that local variable and gain a bit of safety. And that will make a latter pass to switch things cleaner that much easier. Thanks.

Adaptable UI problems

I have some doubts about the adaptable UI feature. Part 1: UI issues - The UI mode selection combo box (called "Task" for some reason) has usability problems: 1. it jumps around when changing mode, so every time I change it, I have to find it again to try another mode; 2. when the main commands toolbar is vertical, it causes a very large horizontal padding on it, even when it's hidden in the overflow menu. - Tearing off toolbars does not adjust their size to fit the controls. If I tear off a toolbar from a small window, I get a toolbar with an overflow menu. If I tear off from a maximized window, I get a toolbar with lots of unused space. This makes tearing off highly useless. - Toolbars can be torn off but can't be attached in a location different that the original one. This is because they use GtkHandleBox, for which the docking position is fixed. At the same time GDL has a widget named GdlDockBar which sounds like a true dockable toolbar (but it might as well be something else, I don't know). Part 2: UxManager class - UxManager::setTask: Magic constants in switch. - UxManager constructor: "tags" is created but doesn't do anything. - What is the point of having several desktops attached to one UxManager? Part 3: util/ege-tags.h, util/ege-tags.cpp - ege-tags.h: It supposedly implements http://create.freedesktop.org/wiki/ResourceTagging but at present I don't see any place in Inkscape that could make use of tagging. - Even if the aforementioned specification was good, the UxManager class apparently tries to do two completely unrelated things: manage external resources and change the UI mode. - TagSet: if I understand correctly what this class attempts to do, it should use std::tr1::unordered_map<Tag, int> with appropriate hash and equality predicates instead of the combination of std::vector<Tag> and std::map<std::string, int>. Part 4: other problems - toolbox.cpp:1578: code related to changing the UI layout uses a switch to assign function pointers. Polymorphism should be used instead. Regards, Krzysztof

I've written up a proposal on an exporter of vector graphics for various web standards. I have experience using those various web standards over the years, most of which are documented on Google Code. XDG User Dirs

Hello While taking a stab at fixing the command line on Windows, I can also implement the XDG User Dirs specification, using relevant GLib functions. However, there is a slight problem with this: we currently look for user data (palettes, extensions, etc.) in the user's config directory, not in the data directory. The default user config directory on Unix is ~/.config, while the default user data directory is ~/.local/share. Is it OK to look in .local/share? We can automatically create a README in the config directory on the first run that tells the user to move his datafiles to ~/.local/share/inkscape. Regards, Krzysztof

Hello, I'm a 31 years old developer from Italy and I've been using Inkscape for years. I've just subscribed to this mailing list and.. yeah... I'm already here with a bug report :P Recently I experienced a strange behaviour with KDE 4 preview system and svg/svgz files saved with the last version of inkscape (both stable and devel version) so I decided to contact you. I hate duplicate/unclear bug reports so I would like to discuss this thing a bit with you before filing a bug to launchpad. So, let's try to explain what I've found System: Kubuntu 9.10 with KDE 4.3.2 Inkscape: devel version and 0.46 (See below) Reproducible: yes These are the steps I did: 1) I drew a simple icon with inkscape (a circle and a polygon) 2) I save it as svg or svgz (get the file here [1]) 3) The preview on my kubuntu 9.10 looks crazy (get the preview here [2]) as if nodes position has been screwed 4) I open the svg file with Inkscape 0.46 5) I change the color of an element and save again 6) The preview still looks crazy 7) I open the file again with Inkscape 0.46 but this time I move the polygon around, then I place it in the old position and save 8) The preview looks perfect, as if nodes position has been restored (get the file and the preview here [3][4]) I can't really understand what's going on here but seems that KDE 4 has troubles when previewing svg/svgz files saved with inkscape > 0.46 This happens also using ksvgtopng to convert an svg file to a png Could this possibly be related to bug 170049 [5] ? Curve Sketching

Hi, I've developed an algorithm for fitting smooth curves (the curves are like in Spiro, but piecewise-linear curvature) to user sketches. I'm thinking that this could be useful in Inkscape as a replacement or alternative to the current pencil tool algorithm. Compared to existing stuff, the benefit is that the curves are usually much nicer, the drawback is that it's a complicated algorithm and is slower--fitting a curve of moderate complexity will likely take about 1 second. Would the Inkscape devs be potentially interested in including this functionality? I'm looking into rewriting my research prototype to be faster, cleaner, more robust, and to remove proprietary dependencies. I can write the library that does the fitting, but I'm unfamiliar with Inkscape's code base, so I'd need help integrating it in. The time frame is that I'd likely be done with the library by the middle of summer. My paper with details and comparisons to existing methods (including Inkscape) at the end is at http://www.mit.edu/~ibaran/curves/ The reported timings can probably be improved by close to a factor of 2. Moving ahead in inkscape development..

Hello all, I had previously introduced myself as a GSOC 2010 aspirant. I am devoting myself to the idea of c++ifying(in Object Oriented manner) the inkscape code. For that I am trying to move into the code and traversing, but due to its vastness am facing problems in it. I got hold of a very old bug, "Y Scale inversion" -> https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/170049. As i have seen the heat on this, this bug is of a very wide scope and so can actually help me to involve myself with *much* of the inkscape codebase. So it is my urgent and honest request to inkscape developers as well as corresponding GSOC mentors to just direct me as to where in the code I should start tracking and removing the bug. Filter effect and blur background

Hi, Please first take a look at this picture composited in photoshop: http://ftpmerou.free.fr/inkscape/blur-background.png I tried to reproduce the same effect in inkscape easilly, and i made it by using a copy of the picture, bluring it and applying a mask with a shape to simulate the effect: http://ftpmerou.free.fr/inkscape/blur-background-fakebymask.svg It's ok now, but I thought about filter effects (background image can be used as a connection link in the filter editor) and saw this: http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG/filters.html#AccessingBackgroundImage On http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Filter_Effects there is a note about this property "There's no GUI for setting the enable-background property. This property has to be set on some parent layer of filtered object to make Background Image and Background Alpha input images work." Does the background image support is implemented? Do you think that the same effect can be achieved with filters by applying the effect on a shape (that will blur its background content)?

I have checked the file. The problem cause was an absence of font engine in old UniConvertor versions. We have refactored sK1 and UniConvertor code base and font engine now in common sk1libs package. These changes will be in UniConvertor 1.1.5. So just waiting for the release. Thank you for provided sample. It allows us improving some CGM filter related issues. Hi, I also build inkscape on windows 7 without any errors. I use last devlibs (from trunk .bzr last version 14) and the mingw Krzysztof prefer (tdm-mingw-1.908.0-4.4.1-2.exe). GSOC spatial indexing - renderer

Hello I have briefly described in the past my thoughts on how the render can be improved by introducing spatial indexes. The render has to find which shapes intersect with the user's viewport. Currently this is done by a full scan in display/sp-canvas.cpp:871 in sp_canvas_group_render() right? (Krzysztof gave some hints in another thread some days ago). The idea is to implement an index, so that the renderer performs the range query faster than the full scan. Some basic ideas on the project. * The index is going to be a standard one like R-star (used in oracle, postgis, sqlite). * This R-trees can support 3 dimensions without any performance penalty (if the index has many dimensions performance deteriorates and other kind of indexes perform better). If we do this project we can implement a third dimension (time), for future usage, and leave it there until Inkscape goes into animation. * It would be better if the project is hosted in lib2geom. In this way Inkscape's code base undergoes the minimal changes (ideally no more than a few lines of code). * The index should be disk based (so that it can be saved and reused when Inkscape opens the same file again) * There should be a way to identify the shapes of the SVG uniquely (either XML elements or elements from another abstraction Inkscape uses). Can anyone give me some pointers on how I should work for this issue? Any ideas are welcome. Frost is upon us

Hey all, I propose moving to Frost on Tuesday if nobody opposes. To be clear, the main delay in moving forward was an improper usage of Poppler and it blocking us from having "make check" being run. Thank you to Krzysztof for addressing our poppler issue, and Ted for pushing forward with the "check" issues (both make and dist). Given that the main hurdle has been jumped over, I'm comfortable saying that we should push forward to Frost now. We are NOT at Feature Freeze and we don't need to uber-restrict commits yet... but we need to tone down the "radical" nature of commits. Frost will have us achieve: Most development complete. Release Notes should be >90% filled in. Bug Hunt: 300 points Post inkscape-0.48-alpha.tar.gz The following outstanding issues are being actively worked on: *Krzysztof's Node Tool rewrite bugs and issues. *Jon's wicked custom Swatch issues. *Tavmjong's LinuxFund text tool work. The following outstanding issues HAVE to be addressed to not be cut: *Jon's swatches MUST be initially editable in the F&S dialog. *Jon's new Input Devices dialog needs whatever polish to be good enough. *Jon's "UX" work (specifically UI placement should be looked at). *Tavmjong's LinuxFund text tool work (yes it hasn't been committed, but we can only accept so much depending on when code lands). *Felipe Sanches' color management work. The "not real" (device) cmyk thing MUST be addressed prior to release. I'm not saying to remove, but perhaps disable, it is a part of the SVG spec, but it's not how the CMYK workflow actually works. Notes: Tavmjong's work can thankfully be pulled in partially... if we have new and working widgets for the text tool, we should take them when available rather than wait. Jon has put an extraordinary amount of effort into refactoring stuff for the swatches. 0.48 is a multi-point release in that we're anticipating 0.49 dev to be lengthy... if there are bugs (which are committed to be worked on), I'm not against a release with them. No offense, but, we're just like every software vendor out there in this case saying that we know there are issues and are committed to fix them... but feeding our audience takes priority. I think it would be nice if some GSOC student were to work on such a feature: Currently you can't draw outside a layer's boundary, and you have to tell GIMP to adjust the boundary yourself. I think an option can be added that, when set to "on", lets GIMP handle that in such a way: 1. any time a layer is moved, GIMP will after the operation set the layer boundary to include the entire canvas. 2. On save, GIMP will autocrop all layers. what do you think?

Axonometric grid scaling bug

Hello all, some time ago I've encoutered a bug in inkscape resulting in incorrect updating of axonometric grids. I have fixed it myself, then I've filed a bug report with a patch included: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/429776 Apparently it hasn't been noticed by any of developers, so I decided to try here. I think that this bug is quite severe for the axonometric grid functionality (conditions in which it appears to be working properly are actually a corner case), it makes the feature hardly usable. I hope that someone will take a look at the bug report and commit the fix. The bug has been reported against 0.46, but I can provide a patch ported to 0.47 if it helps. Radek

GSoC 2010 Cairo canvas

Hello all I will limit myself to two possibilities of a GSoC project for this year: Cairo rendering and SP layer improvements. I think they have the biggest potential impact. This mail discusses the first one. In order to use Cairo rendering in Inkscape, we need a Cairo-based canvas widget to replace the current SPCanvas / NRArena. They appear to be originally derived from GnomeCanvas. Canvas widgets are a rather common beast in the FOSS world, so even if we decide none of the existing ones are satisfactory for us, we have a large body of work from which we can derive inspiration. This page has links to several existing canvas implementations. I have not analyzed all of them yet, but will keep you informed about any important http://live.gnome.org/ProjectRidley/CanvasOverview Here are some requirements for our canvas. 0. Based on Cairo. 1. Model/view split: objects displayed on the canvas can exist without it. 2. Widgetless rendering: it should be possible to render completely in memory, for example for console-mode PDF export. 3. No excessive ties to Inkscape - implemented as a library, perhaps using a few well-defined portions of the existing codebase (e.g. 2geom). 4. Canvas primitives should be sufficient to render SVG. There are many things to discuss, but here's the first one: Tiling reduces the area of the screen that needs to be redrawn, but increases the number of drawing operations. We could instead have a tile-less system that would compute the affected bounding box and redraw it in one go, instead of redrawing many tiles. What do you think? Regards, Krzysztof

GSoC (Student Idea) - Graphical Script Extension Editor

Hello, I would like to make it easier for Inkscape users to create their own script extensions, especially effects (ie. scripts that operate on the current image). *Ideally* this would involve creating some kind of visual programming language to allow users to drag-and-drop high-level SVG editing commands with intuitive icons into a editor field to create their program - without having to write a single line of code. *Practically* there is no way I could code something so complex in the time-span. Thus I think I should focus on automating as much of the ScriptingHOWTO section as possible. This would (possibly) include: - A graphic tool to generate INX files? - Creating some useful python functions (eg. "addStar()") to allow users to create their script quickly? - An interactive function navigator? Would this be a viable summer of code project? Hello, I am interested in working on the "transformation-anchors" project in GSOC this year. I am a graduate student in Computer Science in Canada. I knew Inkscape would win GSOC projects this year, as usual. :-) Congrats. I hope it is not too late to say Hi here. Inkscape is one of my favorite open source software. I also have strong interests and work experiences in image processing, image editors. I have developed a vector-based graphics editor from scratch before. That graphics editor uses customized XML formats, have OOP architecture design to deal with all shapes/primitives with object classes, and allow SVG and DXF (Solidworks drawing file) import and export. Therefore, it seems Inkscape GSoC projects are most interesting and relevant to me. The project, transformation-anchors, seems interesting and doable to me. Wiki docs are very helpful. It is impressive that GUI mock-up has already been posted several months before the Gsoc actually starts. I will read and plan in further detail. I have similar work before, to have the default rotation center to be the geometric center of all shapes. Anchor coordinates are a part of the object (drawing) attributes. It can be adjusted, so that geometrical transformations, rotation, translation, scaling, and shearing, can be performed with the updated center. In this project, there will be some GUI modification, e.g. enable and disable buttons, display coordinates and values, take XY input from users, and allow undo and redo. Maybe some nice intuitive and simple designs will help on these. There may be some refactoring to do, but I am not sure. In this stage, I hope to understand more for this project. Please kindly share comments. I will draft a full proposal in about 10 days. Technically, this project seems doable to me. Besides that I am good in C++, which may be a basic requirement, I have done some work using the following. XML: I have used it for many projects, using C++, Python, C# and Java. Libraries used: .NET, DOM, JDOM, Minidom. SVG: I have written a SVG viewer before. GTK+: I have experience with it. It is the most complex GUI widgets that I have used. SVN: I used it at work before. KML import status

I was looking through the GSoC possiblities and I'm particularly interested in the KML import project: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/inkscape/+spec/kml-svg-translation I see reference to a project proposal being developed, however the link is now dead: http://socghop.appspot.com/student_proposal/show/google/gsoc2009/piotrekk/t… Given that project is still open, I assume that the proposal didn't go forward for some reason. I was wondering if anyone had further information as to why. I've been thinking quite a bit about the hyperlocal movement and I've been trying to come up with a reasonable way for users to add more complex structures to maps than what is available in browser-based drawing programs. It seems like this is a strong possibility, is there still interest in developing this feature? -Will

experimental LPE

Hi, in the last couple of testbuilds for windows are experimental LPE's enabled. On Ubuntu there are only a few effects available, but on windows builds are a lot of effects. There is now a pre-packaged version of Inkscape running native on my MacPro under OS X 10.6.2. That's the good news. The bad news is that there's some more work needed to make it useable. Hello everybody & GSoC Open Asset Import Library

Hello inkscape-devel! basing on the suggested ideas of last year (http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Google_Summer_Of_Code), I'd really love to tackle one of the suggestions, actually the 3d file import stuff. Open Asset Import Library (http://sf.net/projects/assimp) is a sort of generic importer library for 3d models, it supports two douzens of file formats from various 3d apps, frameworks, games, such as 3ds, obj, Collada, x, md5, ... Project exists since 2008, is hacked on by a team of 5-6 people. I'm currently the main committer, always trying to keep things together. Basing on the '3D Polyhedron' extension, the idea would be to integrate Assimp as model importer to get access to a wide range of formats. After importing, display a sort of real-time preview (in a separate window with OpenGL, maybe?) so the user can choose his preferred view point, lighting, whatever. When he's done, the model would be projected onto the drawing plane, converted to inkscape polygons and grouped together. Fancy stuff such as flat-shading and other things would be quite easy to accomplish. Also, Assimps development will surely continue, so format support might be improved in future (Diederik van Lierop pointed out that CAD file formats are mostly missing, also there's no support for Blenders native format yet). A few words to myself: I'm currently 18. Attending the german equivalent of highschool in year 12 of 13. A bit computer-addicted (just a little bit, you know :-) Worked with a few software technologies, in terms of programming languages mostly C, Python, C++. Also, I do like anything related to computer graphics. No development experience with Inkscape' source code yet (biggest achievement so far: it compiles), but I like the app and use it regularly and would like to contribute in future. Now I have it. Probably a(nother) dumb question - but how (and when) do I switch to gcc 4.0 ? If I use the current script with sdk 10.4, will the result be useable on 10.6? Hello all, I am a student aspiring for GSOC 2010. To begin with, I would like to mention that I had used inkscape previously for creating games, amongst which one was ECG simulation. As far as developing for inkscape is concerned i would honestly admit i have no experience. I have a good knowledge in GUI development in JAVA and QT. With my skill set(mentioned in my resume), I am not sure as to what task could be assigned to myself. Although I would like to mention that in my previous works and projects I was always unaware of the technology used, yet I was always able to complete them successfully because being a Software Engineer it is my belief that everything is achievable if the problem definition is clear. Looking for bug to fix and GSoC

Hello everybody, I am a young student in a French University (4th year). I am actually following a master degree about Image Processing. I am strongly interest to join Inkscape developer community through Google Summer Of Code. Indeed, my studying field is close to some technologies used by Inkscape, and I'd like to improve my skills. I am also a happy Inkscape (basic) end-user since 2 years now. But before, I would like to check that I am able to be a good developer for you. So I compiled the code last night, and I am checking for some easy tasks to do. This will be a good way for me to understand a little bit how the code is working. I saw the Janitor tasks on the wiki[1] and naturally the bug list from launchpad[2]. Do you have any recommendations for me ? I actually found two interesting bug I will have a look for. This is actually not bug but features requests. First of all : https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/171099 . Users are asking for an option to display printer boundaries. This is something I regularly missed with Inkscape when I want to print some document. Sometimes I have some bad result, because the print area is too small for my printer. And secondly, https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/171117 . Users are asking for an "Ungroup All". Sometimes when I import some Open Clip Art files, I would like to ungroup all before I start to work. So I think it can be useful. I also thought about another features. I did not see it on Inkscape wiki or Bug tracker but, I probably missed it. I would like to have some easy way to upload a svg file to the Open Clip Art library. Because I am using this wonderful resources regularly, and I like to share my creation easily on this website. I also started to think about a project for GSoC, I saw a mail about Cairo rendering. I would be quite interest in this idea, since I am working with Cairo for one of my project in my university. Feel you free to give me any suggestions about these ideas. Hey All, Unfortunately the person who was going to work on our Text Tool project via LinuxFund is either not willing or able to follow through with it. So, that means that there is ~$1,300 up for grabs if you're interested. The gist of the work is to add UI elements for existing functionality (letter kerning, spacing, rotation, etc) and to fix a couple text tool related bugs. Hey people, For about a year now, a colleague of mine and I have been negotiating with our current employer about the conditions for starting a spin-off company. As of yesterday it finally looks like it's really going to happen; basically all we need now is to have the contracts typed out and signed. I'm very excited about this, but consequently I won't have as much time to spend on improving Inkscape as I used to. I'm not too excited about that part :-(. This is also why I cannot commit to being a GSoC mentor this year. However, I won't quit completely and will still be around. Besides, chances still are that we won't be able to raise enough capital to get our start-up company really flying, in which case I might pick up my Inkscape work again before the end of the year. Inkscape 0.47 OSX Official - Python filters don't work (again)

Hi, I just downloaded the official Inkscape 0.47 release for Leopard/Snow Leopard and while Inkscape itself is running absolutely fast and awesome as soon as I touch anything that runs inkex.py the age old info message about the fantasting lxml2 library wrapper comes up again. Looking into the .app bundle I was surprised to find lxml2 and numpy installations for all (!) major python version going from 2.6 back to 2.3 this time. Hmmmm... so what could be the problem? As we all know resetting my PATH won't (and didn't) work because the bootstrap system just builds its own PATH so what gives? Well, it turns out that this mess is caused by the default Apple X11 running in 64 bit mode and thus all the python stuff included with Inkscape 0.47 is of the wrong architecture. (at least it says that when you remove the try: blocks in inkex.py and let it spit out the real tracebacks). So I guess we need to include python stuff with 64 bit support with the official OSX release. (I tried building a 64 bit Python 2.6.4 myself but sheesh it's hard...) Anyway just thought I'd report this (apologies if it's known already). It's not a deal breaker - Inkscape still rocks. André PS: I am on OSX 10.6.2 and I have MacPorts installed but X11 is the default one. And I can see it's shown as 64-bit app when it runs in Activity Manager.

I'm currently working on some Java code that will export Inkscape ready SVG from an open source mapping application. One of the things I need to do is export map labels. I've been taking a look at how Inkscape represents text labels in its SVG flavor. I'm looking for advice on how to calculate the dimensions of the rectangle element used as the flow region. If I know the height of the font for the text labels in pixels, is there a formula that I can use to calculate the width and height I need for the flow region? Is this calculation dependent on the type of font? (I'm not really worried about getting the flow region a little too big. I'm more worried about getting it too small, and then not being able to see the label in Inkscape.) Thanks for any suggestions. Landon

LZMA tarballs

Hello LZMA tarballs are smaller and decompress faster than bzip2. https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/539671 They are supported since automake 1.10.1, released in January 2008. We currently require 1.10, which was released 3 months earlier. The automake dep change would only affect developers, since users of tarballs can use the provided configure script. New support for SVG-scalable vector graphics Sure, you can offer a PDF download for complex content like floor plans and org charts, but why not make these decipherable right inside the Web page? SVG allows just that. SVG is a W3C standard for animated, interactive graphics based on paths rather than bitmaps. No matter how much you zoom in on an SVG image, edges remain razor sharp—unlike bitmapped image formats like JPEG, which show degradation as you enlarge them. This holds true for text, too; that's key for the org-chart example mentioned above. In fact, John Hrvatin, senior program manager lead for Internet Explorer, told journalists that IE9 is the first browser that natively supports SVG inline with HTML—previously XHTML was required. Hey all, This is where 0.48 as a "release" begins! This email will be a little redundant for developers, but will let users know what the current plan is. The next stage (Frost) kicks into gear at the beginning of March in case you were wondering. For right now: *New feature development will focus on wrapping up. *We will identify "make check" issues (we need to make sure things are "friendly" for packaging). *We will run an About Screen contest on DeviantART (which I will announce within the next 24 hours and post all info to both lists). *Ensure that the Release Notes are at First Draft stage. This is primarily a developer task, however, if you are a user and follow development closely and have something to contribute in this area which we may have overlooked, such as fixed bugs, changes in functionality, etc. please contribute. *Update tutorials and other docs (we could use volunteers). Not joking, if you are an Inkscape user and have the misconception that the only way you can contribute is by code, you are missing out on one of the most important things for our users... documentation. If you have time to spare and some tips for others that you're willing to share, please let us know. --- boring developer junk --- I do want to request from developers... most "big" new stuff be committed by March 1st if possible (or shortly thereafter). JonCruz: The swatch previews for "auto" swatches are starting to worry me given that they have not been working for quite a while now (since 0.47 dev cycle). Event processing issue

Hi all, Someone surely must see an easy fix for this annoying bug I ran into the other day. ~suv reported that scrolling the canvas using the scroll wheel is prohibited when the pointer is hovering above the snap indicator (see the last paragraph of this comment: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/522335/comments/8). This becomes very reproducible and annoying when using a dense grid, together the pre-snap indicator, in for example the rectangle context. Through debugging I learned that the scroll events reach sp_canvas_scroll() (just as they should), and from which they should be dispatched via emit_event() (in sp-canvas.cpp). But this only works if the canvas->current_item has been set, but in this situation the current-item is null. Now my question is: what should the current-item be set to in this case, and how do I control this? Rendering test server unstable

Automated rendering tests for Inkscape have been run for a couple months now. The results are visible at http://auriga.mine.nu/inkscape/ (opening that page can take a while, as it is javascript-heavy) Unfortunately, the server I've used for running the tests and for hosting that website has become unstable, shutting down with no warning or visible reason. Move "Task" to the View menu

Hello I think the "Task" combo box should not be in the main toolbar, but in the View menu under the name "UI Layout" or "UI Mode", analogically to the "Display Mode" submenu. This fixes three problems at once: 1. The main toolbar is no longer super-wide when it's vertical. 2. The combo box no longer jumps around the UI. 3. It's good that you recognize where something itself is being tested that the thing should not be changed. However, things around it can and should be changed. If we have code that is a monolithic mess, then it will be hard to deal with and maintain. It will also be harder to understand intentions and desired use of the API, etc. I think you hand encountered all of these when you did your cleanup pass on the preferences. Given the state of things when you started, the current code is pretty nice. However we do have an opportunity to improve it even more and get things quite solid and maintainable. What it sounds like to me is that we have some good opportunity for a better understanding of Test Driven Development (TDD). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Test-driven_development The main aspects I am thinking of here are in testability and API design. If we have some code that can't be tested, then it is a sign that the code needs to be re-worked. Specifically here it would appear that the code is doing too much "all-in-one" and could benefit from some modular breakup. In this specific case, the persistence of the preferences can be split up. For some testing of the preferences class I would think that some testing should be on the actual setting and fetching of values. A *separate* set of testing can focus on the actual backing store of things that currently persist to a file. I would rank this as even more appropriate for these classes since the stated design intent is to have the ability to hook to different backing down the road. So for a quick overview of factors to look a to try to glean an idea of what might be done in this case: * Look at splitting the backing store from the main class that others use. (a singleton/facade helps us here) * Consider having the unit tests run with the XDG environment set to point to other locations. (less desirable) * Consider a *compile-time* flag to have an explicit file used for the preferences when inside a unit test, instead of the fallback defaults * Some other unit tests might benefit from a preferences instance that either breaks in determined ways or reads from some canned setup. Splitting the backing store might be a bit more work than we need now. The XDG environment variables *could* be used to affect testing, but that's probably not as stable of an approach. I think compile-time flags to enable "read-only" and/or "read from a special .xml" might be the most helpful. The "read-only" mode should work for most tests, but reading from an explicit file might allow tests to be run using canned data. If you have a bit of time to look at this, one of the things I've done in the past on other projects is some simple changes to add a call that will clear out the preference type objects and fill them from an explicit file. This makes it very easy to switch starting state of things on a case-by-case basis even if multiple tests are run inside of a single executable. Let me know if this has helped you start to get some ideas. We probably should bounce things around a bit in the chat room, then get some details up on the wiki so that others can have guidelines as they work on other code too. Thanks.

Hi, Igor has just mailed me that a new version of UniConvertor (1.1.5) will be out soon. Here is what you (win32 packagers and users) need to know. 1. First of all, Inkscape currently ships older version of UC - 1.1.3, whereas the actual one is 1.1.4. 2. The new Windows build of UC will be *much* larger (around 50Mbyte), so he's thinking about doing a special, smaller build for Inkscape, stripped of Python (IIRC). 3. The new version of UC is tuned for VisualStudio 2008 which allows 64bit builds, whereas Inkscape seems to rely on mingw (no 64bit, as he states). This might be problematic for Windows packagers. Modifiers on OSX

Hello I have never used OSX, but I know there are issues with modifier keys on it. Correct me if I'm wrong. * Control is called Command, and is used for shortcuts * There is a different key called Control, which is used to emulate a right click and is rarely used for shortcuts * Left Alt is called Option and is used for shortcuts * Right Alt (AltGr) is called Alt and is used for inputting diacritics (third level chooser) * Shift is called Shift I would like to know the following things, to create an initial solution for Inkscape, with the goal of including it in GTK. - How are those keys reported to GDK, e.g. which bits in the state field are set when they are pressed? GDK knows about Shift, Control, Mod1 (aka Alt), Super (aka Windows key), Hyper and Meta. Which of them correspond to which Mac keys? - Does the above differ in the Quartz version of GTK? I know there are some X server preferences that can be used to alter the mapping. - Is it OK to shorten "Option" as "Opt" in the UI? I know that Command is shortened as Cmd. My plan is as follows: - Define some constants in ui/tool/event-utils.h that define cross-platform masks for the "state" field of GDK events, so that e.g. INK_STATE_ALT maps to Alt on Linux / Windows and to Option on Macs, and INK_STATE_CONTROL accordingly maps to Control or Command. - Define macros for names of the keys indicated by the above masks. For example INK_KEYNAME_CTRL would expand to "Ctrl" or "Cmd". This name would also be marked for translation. - Adjust all messages that contain modifier names. - Look into modifying GTK so that menu items created from actions have the correct modifier names. Alternatively, derive from Gtk::Action and override the widget creation functions. PS is there any way to run OSX in a virtual machine? I can probably help with some of these and will try to and see what I can pull off this week, however, additional help would be appreciated as I need to get our GSoC stuff rolling and in order. 2) Get current 'make distcheck' issues resolved. I have not reviewed how this is done yet, so, experienced volunteers are appreciated. 3) Get current builds available. We do have fairly recent win32 and non-universal osx builds available. If I could have users other than the people who produced those builds confirm viability, that would be great! 4) Start the About Screen contest. The only thing necessary for this is to get #3 done. Hello Do we have any bug importance guidelines? I'm asking because some of my bugs had absurdly high importances. [NEW] Very simple fix for the image embedding problem

Hello I wondered for some time how to add an "embed" checkbox to the import dialog, but it wasn't necessary - I used the extension parameters feature. I fixed the embedding of images in the following way: 1. If a bitmap file is imported, a dialog appears that asks the user whether to link. (Same when opening a bitmap image.) 2. When a bitmap file URI is dragged over Inkscape's window, a dialog appears as in 1. 3. When pixel data is dragged over Inkscape's window, it is embedded an no dialog is shown. 4. When a bitmap file URI is pasted, nothing happens (for now) - that's because the clipboard doesn't support URI lists yet. 5. When pixel data is pasted, it is embedded as in 3. As a bonus, all bitmap import should now use the same code path. Regards, Krzysztof

I have added a bug report https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/534045 the 'object to path' and 'stroke to path' buttons have gone AWOL. There were after the 'make selected segments curves' button but aren't there now. I went looking in node preferences to see if I could turn them on again, but there is no option to do so. I reckon these are pretty fundamental node options... as you can't use the node tool on shapes until you've made the conversion. Yes, there are keyboard shortcuts, and they are also the first items in the path menu - but a quick icon click beats both those methods for me. Can we please have them back? Hi everybody, I did a bzr checkout and tried to compile a more recent version of inkscape - both: X11 and aqua. enhancing shortcuts schemes

Hi, It's probably not very well known that keyboard shortcuts in localized (e.g. Russian) UI do not work in Windows. This is one of the oldest GTK+ bugs that nobody bothers to fix. A user has just come up with an clever hackaround that looks like this: bind key="g" action="ToolGradient" / bind key="G" action="ToolGradient" / bind key="Cyrillic_pe" action="ToolGradient" / bind key="Cyrillic_PE" action="ToolGradient" / That is, he specifically maps Russian "P" character which is on the same key that English "G" is. He also patched relevant parts for Illustrator, Corel DRAW etc. schemes. This is probably not Dvorak-pron, though. Should we ship patched versions of the shortcut schemes? Alexandre

Which GSoC project would do the most good?

Hello I'd like to know the opinion of others: which of those projects would be the most beneficial in the long run and at the same time can be finished in the GSoC timeframe? 1. Convert renderer to Cairo - drawing speedups. 2. C++ize the SP layer and make XML nodes private.* 3. Multi shape editing - ability to edit more than 1 shape (like ellipse or star) at once, with extra features like resizing rectangles by dragging their edges. 4. Remove livarot in favor of 2Geom, improving 2Geom where necessary (e.g. boolops). *) When XML nodes are private, it's much easier to implement backwards compatibility - we just implement the reading of obsolete versions in the corresponding SP object. It's pretty much required to solve the problems with flowtext and markers on rect. The idea is to make the SP layer slightly more DOM-like so that it can be exported through D-Bus. It seems like the only way to seriously decruftize Inkscape, but I'm not sure if it's doable in 2 months. Maybe somebody has an idea for a project that could do it at least partially? Since SourceForge no longer seems to use that form of reference to the archive (for instance, forum_name is now used instead of forum_id), that link is broken. Searching the archive for "Inkscape SVG" doesn't seem to point to any useful background discussion. Can anyone recall any key words that may have been included in the thread title so we can relink the Wiki article to the discussion? Or shall I remove the Wiki link?

report: Mac OS X aqua in productive use

Hi everybody, I've used inkscape 0.47 AQUA PPC, devel-r9101, OS 10.4.11 now for several days in my daily work as a public transport consultant. There are two standard crashs (reported here: https:// bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/527571 and here: https:// bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/528632) which occasionally occur. In general, there is some trouble using the aqua variant - but with some care and adventuresomeness it can be used for productive work. Here is my very personal wishlist for next steps: * Fix bugs https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/527571 and https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/528632 - these are the most important ones. * do some ige-mac-integration work in order to make the inkscape-bin icon dissappear from the programme switcher and remap ctrl to cmd key After that I'd regard it as ready for an alpha release. Hello friends, thanks to many hints, especially by ~suv, a new ready-for-testing inkscape aqua can be downloaded here: http://verkehrsplanung.com/Inkscape_aqua_PPC_047.zip It should launch alone without any macports environment, may immediately kill the X11 after its launch - and makes a quite useable impression. It was made on a PPC, 10.4.11. Unluckily I cannot switch to the universal variants at the moment, so I'd be grateful if some intel owner would check whether it runs on rosetta. I manually removed i386 python components, this may cause intel machines to get in trouble. Also, I couldnt check whether it works on Leopard or Snowie… If somebody has some spare time, maybe he wants to have a look at it. Hi all, I am a french student in «Master 1» of computer sciences (equivalent to a Bac+4). I use Inkscape every days during my studies and hobbies. That's why, I am interested by the development of Inkscape. I have some skills in C/C++ and Doxygen but I never have contributed to an open source project. During my studies, I have done some programs, like an « image manipulation » program in C++ with QT, and some programs with GTK+. Also, I know how to report bugs, i already reported some bugs in Launchpad. Currently, I have done a checkout of inkscape with Bazaar. And I maked the project, he is correctly running. Hi developers, I miss very much keyboard shortcuts to single alignment tools like align top, align center, align right .... This speeds up my work a lot when using CorelDraw (here keys l,r,t,b,c,e,p can be used for). src/verbs.cpp contains only a limited set of accessible commands (verbs). I'm not familiar with the inkscape source code. Can this please made accessible for future releases? Or is it possible to define shortcuts to the alignement tools with user defined python scripts? The image's text is typeset by LaTeX, so for example mathematical expressions are rendered correctly, and all text will be in the font and style of the LaTeX document (even when changing the document's font afterwards). move objects to hidden layers

Hello, in all of my inkscape versions it is not possible to copy an object to a hidden layer. To me that is a littlebit annoying, as when I shunt objects between layers in other vector drawing progs, I'm used to switch on the source layer and hide the target layer - so I've got control which objects are done already. Is there a deeper meaning in this behaviour - or can anybody give me another strategy for shunting objects between layers - or shall I file it as a bug? Yours, Wolf

Converting rpm packages to tgz to install Inkscape

All you need to then do is run rpm2tgz at the command line on the package, eg " rpm2tgz inkscape-0.44-0.i686.rpm" and then install with "installpkg inkscape-0.44-0.i686.tgz"." I'm not yet a *NIX developer, but sense that there may be a more generic set of instructions hidden in this specific tip. Would it be correct to say, 'RPM packages can be used to install Inkscape from a GNU zipped tar ball (.tgz) by using the appropriate converter utility, rpm2tgz, after retrieving the rpm. Thus, "rpm2tgz inkscape-0.44-0.i686.rpm" produces inkscape-0.44-0.i686.tgz, which can be installed with "installpkg inkscape-0.44-0.i686.tgz".' The title of the section, I imagine, could then be something like, "Converting an RPM package for installation as a GNU zipped tar ball (.tgz)".

Increasing Boost version for py2geom

Hello all, While trying to build py2geom, I run into problems because the version of Boost that we use (1.34) does not support our compiler's version (gcc 4.4.1). Not being able to build py2geom is not a huge problem for Inkscape, but it is a big disappointment. I read that Boost 1.37+ does support gcc 4.4.0. Boost 1.34 was released in 2007. Boost 1.37 at the end of 2008. Is that too recent for us to be able to use it? Increasing the version of Boost for Windows is not a big problem, since we have our devlibs. For Linux, I do not know the issues involved. Thanks, Johan

Node tool crash due to modified path data?

Trying to node-edit the third path in the attached file immediately and reproducibly crashes inkscape (tested with Inkscape 0.47+devel r9092 on OS X 10.5.8). - The path was created by combining two copies of a rectangle and applying (testing) the proposed extension 'Remove redundant edges' from recent launchpad report #521988 <https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/521988> - The path is rendered without error in Squiggle (Batik 1.7) - The path can be node-edited in Inkscape 0.47 r22583 without crash. Problem with POpen on windows

Hi- I discovered the restack extension stopped working (under windows at any rate) in .47 for more than 82 objects in the svg document The code calling inkscape with the --query-all parameter (to get all the bounding boxes) was: if bsubprocess: p = Popen('inkscape --query-all "%s"' % (file), shell=True, stdout=PIPE, stderr=PIPE) rc = p.wait() f = p.stdout err = p.stderr It will just hang the python window in such a case. I found my removing the rc = p.wait() line the extension will work... but I am not sure of the impact of making that change. I see the Popen.wait call is used in other extensions as well, but they all seem to be using the single object query flag --query-id=ID, so so not experience this problem. The python docs state Popen.wait "will deadlock if the child process generates enough output to a stdout or stderr pipe such that it blocks waiting for the OS pipe buffer to accept more data. Use communicate() to avoid that." but it also states that with communicate() "The data read is buffered in memory, so do not use this method if the data size is large or unlimited." -Rob A>

Inkscape 0.48 Release Progress

Hey All, It appears that everything is still on track for 0.48. Given that, I'd like to remind everyone that Chill will be setting in about 2 weeks from now. For those that do not know, here's what happens during Chill: New feature development focuses on wrapping up. We identify current 'make distcheck' issues. Have a small sprint to Triage new bug reports. Run an About Screen contest. Ensure that the Release Notes are at First Draft stage. Update tutorials and other docs (we could use volunteers). I'd like to push that if we want to get the DBUS stuff in for this release, that we look to get it merged by the 1st of March if possible (we just need to not break anyone's compilation, we can get it working on all platforms after the fact). Lastly, there is always an "open culture" issue about the hosting of the About Screen contest. Unless someone has something functional and easy for us to use by Chill, it will be taking place via DeviantART again. Any questions or comments? Cheers, Josh

Connecticut Film Festival

I am a volunteer with the Connecticut Film Festival, Interactive and New Media component. Our festival, in its 6th year, this being the 2nd year of the Interactive and New Media component, is looking for presenters for workshops and panels. The festival is May 4-9, with the Interactive component on May 7,8,9, Friday to Sunday, in Danbury CT, located about 60 miles from New York City. Our theme this year is "Connections Multiplied". We have a strong focus on free and open source software for creative professionals. I think Inkscape would be an excellent fit as an illustration tool. We already have presenters lined up for Blender and Celtx, and representatives from the FSF and EFF. We want this festival to be a way for developers and users of these tools to connect with each other, as well as educate the larger public about their existence, usefulness, and importance. If anyone with extensive user, development, and/or training/presentation experience with Inkscape is interested in being a presenter please contact me at joeaguy@...400... to discuss further. We can provide hotel accommodations, and have limited funds to reimburse travel, so we would prefer someone based in the north east USA if you need travel reimbursement. Hi all, I just 'finished' LPE extrude. I'd like you to test it, see if it bugs for some paths. And, I'd like your input. What should be added and what should be improved? You have to build Inkscape with "#define LPE_ENABLE_TEST_EFFECTS", otherwise the LPE won't show in the LPE dialog. (uncommenting line 9 in src/live_effects/effect.cpp will do the trick) Thanks, Johan

File preview size limit

Hi all, Heisenbug suggests, in bug #499310 (preview cutoff at 1.3 MB too small for images, https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/499310), that we set a higher file preview size limit. The current value is 1.3Mo, and the suggested one is 10Mo. Is this value acceptable? Regards. -- Nicolas

Hello friends, I tried again to build an inkscape aqua… I uninstalled all X11-related components first, than reinstalled the quartz/aqua variants, finally did a selfupdate above all. node handles

I keep running into the situation where instead of 2 handles I only have one - I suspect the missing handle is actually centered on the node itself but there doesn't seem to be any way to get at it. As I cursor around I get all the handles, not just the 'selected node". so is there a way to: a) just get the handles for the selected node ? b) way to highlight the handle points so even if it's on a node, a user can click on it ? or is the 2nd handle sometimes not there ? I think this is somewhat a user question, but also a design/development question.

Hi everyone, I spent a lot of time this weekend trying to wrap my head around how an object gets selected to no avail. My goal is to fix this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/365458 Currently selection of clipped objects is horribly broken - see http://launchpadlibrarian.net/31755891/clip-selection-bug.ogv Anyway, can someone explain: 1. What handles click events on the canvas 2. Where is the logic that decides what gets selected >From what I can tell, display/sp-canvas.cpp:1505 sp_canvas_button (GtkWidget *widget, GdkEventButton *event) handles click events. Within this function I don't see any calls to anything that resembles "is this point within this object". Help! Thanks! - Alex

r9059/60: pencil tool sometimes fails when node snapping to grid is active

One of the changes in recent revisions 9059 or 9060 makes the pencil tool act strangely with default snapping settings (global node snapping enabled) while a grid is visible and set as active snapping target: it seems as if some key press or release events don't get processed immediately. To reproduce: draw freehand curves with different mouse speed and timing of left-mouse-button-clicks. Sometimes neither the path outline while dragging nor the finished line when releasing the left mouse button are visible, yet the starting point is picked up for and added to a later drawn curve. It does not happen with no grid visible nor when global snapping is disabled. This is reproducible with my usual preference settings as well as with a default (new) preferences.xml file. I haven't seen it in earlier revisions <= 9058, but can reproduce it with Inkscape 0.47+devel r9060 and r9061 on OS X 10.5.8 ~suv

performance 047 vs. 046 Mac OS X 10.4

Hello friends, after having built 0.47 for Mac OS X 10.4, I got the feeling that it is quite a bit slower than 0.46 was. Now I tried to verify that suspicion (all done on a G4, 1350MHz, 960MB RAM): Launching inkscape + X11: 047: 27s 046: 17s Opening a very tiny SVG file (3350B), inkscape already open: 047: 4s 046: 2s Opening a more complex SVG file, inkscape already open: 047: 5s 046: 4s Importing a pdf file with lots of text, than selecting all and ungrouping all the contents (time is just for the ungrouping): 047: 16s 046: 8s Probabely this is just an issue of my home brew thing - but maybe this is an issue which is more easily noticeable on such a slow machine like mine. So I'd be grateful if people on other platforms would cross-check that. In the case it is a general issue it may be well worth to put some effort in fixing it in 048. Greetings, Wolf

Hi, I'm Bryan, the original author of pixelsnap. I'd be keen to have PixelSnap included in the official Inkscape repository, and to do whatever's necessary for that purpose (I don't mind releasing it under GPL, either -- I just like the MIT license because it's short & sweet) Just a brief rant on why I think PixelSnap is a useful part of a digital artist's workflow, even if they know inkscape's tools: I'm a fairly technical user of Inkscape, but in spite of the great work done on snapping & grids recently (kudos to the people involved with that!), I've still found the "right" way to be a bit of a pain in the backside. The reasons Rob gives below are two good examples. Another big reason why the "right" way is often unworkable is the fact that odd-width strokes are offset by exactly 0.5 pixels. I understand the reasoning for this, but it means you have to have 2 pixel-sized grids, one pixel-aligned, and one mid-pixel-aligned. Also, you have to keep the grid on permanently while editing for the "right" way to work, unless you want to go back and edit all your vectors later on. I don't find it very easy working with grids all over my work. Sometimes I don't want stuff to snap either -- I only want vertical & horizontal lines to snap-to-pixel. I'd also rather set up meaningful grids for my artwork -- i.e. grids for layout purposes, not grids to overcome the shortcomings of my screen. pdf import crashing

I've had both pdf and ps import crashing - when trying to open file, the pdf import dialog pops up but when I click the program crashes - no message, just completely exits. The same files open okay with GIMP. Anyone else confirm this bug ? running this on Fedora 12 w/ gnome.

IMPORTANT: Windows compiler change

Hello I have made a Windows build of Inkscape that does not exhibit this long standing critical bug. https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/173116 However, it requires changing the compiler. To build Inkscape and all other C++ libraries, I used TDM-GCC (a patched build of MinGW) version 4.4.1 with SJLJ unwinding. We don't use exceptions in performance critical code, so bothering with Dwarf2 to get a minimal perf gain while substantially increasing code size doesn't seem worth it. (SJLJ gtkmm is 3x smaller than the Dwarf2 one!) http://www.tdragon.net/recentgcc/ Therefore, a note to all Windows devs: when you update to revision 9 or later of devlibs, required by revision 9041 of Inkscape trunk, also change your compiler to TDM-GCC version 4.4.1. You can just download the .exe at the top, it contains everything that's required. Dwarf2 exception handling on Win32

Hi all, For those people who arrived to the party too recently to remember, it was always Mingw's intention to shift to Dwarf2 EH. It was just slow in coming. One of the reasons it took so long was that for a long time, Mingw's compiler was not considered to be a first-class target, but was only a set of patches maintained by Mingw.org itself. Now Mingw -is- a first-class GCC target, and their compiler patches do make it into GCC trunk somewhat faster. Now that DW2 is becoming the default on Win32, shifting back to old SJLJ would be going -against- progress. (And be bad timing, too :-) Anyway, DW2 is what I will be using from now on. bob

How to create group object

Hi all, it may seem to be a stupid question, but I can't find answer anywhere... How can I get SPItem from Inkscape::XML::Node? (or create group object and get xml node from that - I need both) I'm hacking on automatically grouping objects when setting clip/mask (as mentioned in another thread) and I need to create new group, so mask can be applied to the group instead of selected objects. Currently, I know how to create the svg:g XML element, move other objects into it and where to pass reference to the group to do what I want, but it needs to be a reference to SPItem and not Inkcape::XML::Node. [PATCH/RFC] New feature: Enclose objects in groups when applying mask

Hi all, I prefer adding objects into a group before applying a mask, because it allows me to manipulate masked content easily without unsetting mask. But I often forget to group objects before I apply a clip/mask. So I decided to take a look at inkscape source code and made this little feature that does it automatically for me. It needs one more thing to work properly though - when automatically enclosing each object in a group it should mark that group as made by that feature so when unsetting mask it ungroups only those automatically added groups. So where should be stored some info about whether this group should be automatically removed? There are two possibilities that I think of: either inkscape:groupmode attribute or custom attribute for this purpose Also, is it sufficient to manipulate those attributes directly or is there any class that takes responsibility for this? At least there is some code managing inkscape:groupmode attribute, right? I've added a new checkbox in Inkscape Preferences/Clippaths and masks called "Enclose masked objects in groups" to activate this feature (disabled by default to be consistent with previous behavior), so don't forget to check it before testing ;) As I'm not very familar with C++ or Inkscape source code I hope I've not introduced any memory leaks or crashes. Could somebody bring me up-to-date on the state of the new Dbus interactive stuff in Inkscape? I remember seeing a news post or wiki page about it, and I was quite excited. It looks like the best (only) way to make interactive, real-time plugins for Inkscape -- and lots of other fun stuff. But I can't find much on it now. Nothing turns up on a news search or a wiki search. One thing I'm thinking of is trying to write the PixelSnap plugin to be more real-time. - Bryan

Missing file on make command

Hi everyone, on revision 9020, before 'make' or 'make clean' can run, it stops and says it need the file 'm4/ink_svn_snapshot_build.m4' (with the 'SVN' on the filename). If I switch the 'svn' to 'bzr', it gives me the same error, saying it needs the 'm4/ink_bzr_snapshot_build.m4'. I could fix the problem and run 'make' by copying the file and renaming it to m4/ink_bzr_snapshot_build.m4, so, there's a file somewhere needing an update :) Thanks! -- Karlisson M. I know there is experimental perspective_path live effect which also works with perspective, but when I tried it, it appeared that it works in some different way - it does not use bounding rectangle to setup perspective, but relies on object resize/movements instead, so this is not what I need exactly. I also looked at the perspective.py code, but it seems that python extensions work in a bit different way than live effects, so I could not neither reuse it as is, nor understand its formula basing on source code without comments. thank's Anton

Hello, I'm trying to write a new live effect which would move original path points to new locations. I have taken lpe-envelope.cpp for the base and write my code inside Geom::Piecewise<Geom::D2<Geom::SBasis> > LPEPerspective::doEffect_pwd2 (Geom::Piecewise<Geom::D2<Geom::SBasis> > const & pwd2_in) so, I receive Piecewise<D2<SBasis> > at the input and want to return generated object Piecewise<D2<SBasis> > at the output, which would contain all orinal pwd2_in points, but with new coordinates. Generally I did not have problems with my algorithm and I have an array of Point objects, but now when I want to put them back to Piecewise<D2<SBasis> > array, the result does not have the required quality: It is hard to explain in more details, so would try to put some code I have. Bended curves became straight lines 2. I have problems with objects consisting of multiple paths Actually, the 1st point only shows itself when I try to deform such object as symbol '3' (converted to path) - after deforming its shape looks like original, but consists of straight lines; though when I deform a simple triangle with one rib curved,the curve does not disappear, but did not test much though with this deffect. The 2nd problem for now is more important - it is visible after deforming symbol '4' - when it is converted to path, it consists of 2 unconnected path objects, and after my deforming, those 2 paths become connected at some point. This is definitely happens because I set incorrect values to SBasis[0][1] and actually I would prefer not to play with SBasis object by hands and to do my task in some other more reliable way, but for now I could not find anything relevant in the documentation. thank's

Devlibs in Launchpad?

Can I put the Windows devlibs in a Launchpad project? (not in lp:inkscape, but in a separate project like lp:inkscape-windows-devlibs) I have successfully compiled Inkscape on both Linux and Windows using Waf, but there are 2 or 3 minor changes I need to make to the Windows devlibs. If you don't give it any parameters it will use all available logical CPUs. I use it on an i7 (8 cores) and in a Windows VM with 2 cores without any issues. Warning cleanup of hash-iness

Well... it looks like Krzysztof found us a nice, tricky problem in regards to the whole hash_map/unordered_list mess. What he has been tripped up by is one of those ugly problems with no simple solutions. First, we have legacy code that is using a gcc extension. Not so good. Next the replacement has problems on many systems. So we don't have a tidy solution. General questions for any thing with warnings, etc. * Are the warnings critical? That is, do they indicate some immediate risk/failure? If so, then we should address them sooner * Do we need to be using it? That is, are there any alternatives to the code creating warnings? Things such as vector instead of list, map instead of hash_map, etc. * Can we encapsulate it? That is, do we need to leave things in .h files that other things include, or can they be moved inside specific files? * Is there a clean way to fix at least some of the warnings? For some, this may be as simple as using an explicit variable instead of a temporary. In this case there appears not to be * Is it cross-platform? Remember, we need to keep Inkscape compatible with multiple platforms, including MS Windows, Linux, OS X, BSD, Solaris, etc. I'll try to follow up on a few of these points.

Hi, I am contemplating a diagramming project (open source, of course) in Java and believe Inkscape would make a great canvas. However the degree of support for Java is unclear to me. It would need to have dialogue boxes and be interactive, so a filter does not seem enough. Guess there may be potential behind the curtain, or is this simply not the best way to go ahead? Jon, Thanks for your work on toolbars. It will be nice to have the ability to make them vertical. However: - PLEASE describe your changes in Release Notes - I think it would be even more useful to have the ability to put two or more toolbars on the same horizontal or vertical strip, next to each other. Will your refactoring allow for that? - I assume the now-vertical snapping toolbar is more of a demonstration - I really don't see much reason to single it out for vertical placement? - Still, I couldn't re-attach the snapping toolbar into a horizontal position anywhere. It's either its original vertical position at the right, or floating. And re-attaching it to the original position is also quite difficult - the magnetic zone is very small. Can you affect this or is this unfixable in GTK? - Will you be able to block standalone floating state for toolbars? node tool - color of helperpath

Hi Krzysztof, I've been fiddling a bit with the new node tool. It's nice! But, the color of the helperpath of a path with an LPE applied is confusing. The original path used to be colored red, and the LPE-path-parameter green (or to another color if set by the LPE itself). Could you change the green back to red for the original path? Thanks, Johan
