I'm experiencing errors in compiling under Windows, both XP and 7 64 bit in the last few days. I've seen many commits in the meantime but none address the problem. Already tried clean builds, last try today with trunk Rev 14849, devlibs Rev 61 and devlibs64 Rev 33. Here are the errors I get. Dear developers, I've posting these notes directly to the mailing list for review. We had a meeting this afternoon and have founded a new inkscape team called "Inkscape UI", we will be using the tasks in the notes below to create the needed tools and documents and will be working up to having a central place for all inkscape mockups, designs and user experience tests. As we work through making sure designers have the right tools, there will be a process where we figure out how to translate designs into code. All of us may have to look at designs from time to time, comment on them and if they are interesting, take them to trunk and forge them. We'll do a periodic review to see where we are and if designs are working to improve inkscape at the next hackfest 2017. Best Regards, Martin Owens

Hackfest 2016: Discussions Summary

Hi, The Hackfest was a great success. We got about 70 patches in to the code base. Highlights include fixing the GTK3 flickering bug and getting CMake to work on Windows. While most of our time was spent on hacking, we did take some time to discuss various issues. Here is a summary of those discussions. Tav Hackfest 2016 Discussions Summary ================================ Infrastructure: -------------- Git/CI: Consensus is that moving to git soon is a good idea. Benefits: 1. More familiar to outside developers. 2. Bazaar not being actively developed. 3. Easy to separate out libraries as submodules. Krzysztof has prepared a cheat-sheet http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Working_with_Git Libraries that can be turned in to submodules: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Embedded_libraries lib2geom can be made into a submodule first, removing duplicate code. Krzysztof will provide documentation on how to make sublibraries. We recommend moving to GitHub for CI integration. CI (Continuous integration) Consensus is to go with GitHub. This is the most maintainable option with our limited developer resources. Mailing Lists Consensus is to move to a server at OSUOL after server with Mailman3 is available. Mailman3 is a significant improvement over Mailman2. Martin has volunteered that Inkscape is willing to install Mailman3 for OSUOL. (OSUOL has said that it is a low priority project for them and it could be one and a half years before they get to it.) Code ---- C++11 Consensus is to require C++11 after 0.92 released. Developers will be able to use C++11 features. GTK3 GTK3 offers significant improvements in support for OSX and Windows. Consensus is to switch default compilation to GTK3 after 0.92 to get more eyes looking at the problems. Most, if not all, dialogs will need to be tweaked. Then remove GTK2 after the 0.93 release (we have 700 #ifdef's to switch between the two builds). CMake The CMake build system is getting very close to being ready. We can now compile and link Inkscape on Windows using CMake. A lot of work was done at the hackfest (and at LGM). Having a good CMake build is the only hard requirement for 0.92. Roadmap ------- Krzysztof has volunteered to update the roadmap with the things we discussed during the hackfest (CMake, C++11, GTK3, etc.). Community --------- Fund-raising We discussed various options such as using patreon.com, snowdrift.coop, flattr.com. CR will do a detailed investigation of the options. Paid Development We are basically waiting on the website before we can start using our paid development model.

Website access in China - Fix applied

Dear Inkscape Users and Developers, After a lot of backwards and forwards between osuosl and fastly.net we have put in place a solution for our website's access in China. The problem was that our chinese visitors would be able to get the website, but not any of the media (or downloads) because of their great firewall. The solution was a CNAME from media.inkscape.org to fastly and some special dns configuration which I barely understand to solve the issue with access to fastly caches. (I copied and pasted what people said in two tickets and acted as a manual ticket express for the professionals) This solution is now live and I invite people in China to test the website and please report back if they can see any issues. The very recent pull "bzr pull" at the linking step are a error. (i use cmake for building) CMakeFiles/inkscape_base.dir/display/cairo-utils.cpp.o: undefined reference to symbol 'gdk_pixbuf_get_height' the problem come from link.txt you need add " -lgdk_pixbuf-2.0 " from directory inkscape/src/CMakeFiles/inkscape.dir/ and are the same with inkscape/src/CMakeFiles/inkview.dir/link.txt after inkscpae compile and inkscape run properly ;) Regard JsT

Tring to compile with cmake I get this error I say yesterday to mark: I currently have installed libgtkspell-dev and libgtkspell0, also I never have any cmake compilation. 0.91 performance when zoomed in

Hello everyone, I work with Inkscape nearly every day, but am now experiencing some painfully slow performance with some files (that I cannot share right now, sorry!) I'm working with Inkscape 0.91 r13725 on Ubuntu 15.10 with an i7-5500 and 16GB of RAM. The designs are not particularly complex, but have one feature that might be relevant: I'm working with dimension accurate objects that can be very small, 0.1mm and below (I design printed circuit boards). The slowness becomes painful when zoomed in onto the small objects; it happens when I try zooming, choosing objects, moving them, and even changing tools from 'node' to 'select'. nearly every such operation I get the greyed-out Ubuntu stall. Working on the design when zoomed out is not practical, but it is quite a bit faster performing. Another thing that's happening that could be related is the following prompts keep appearing on the console: (inkscape:15569): Pango-CRITICAL **: pango_font_family_list_faces: assertion 'PANGO_IS_FONT_FAMILY (family)' failed (inkscape:15569): Gtk-CRITICAL **: IA__gtk_tree_view_scroll_to_cell: assertion 'tree_view->priv->tree != NULL' failed I could not find any report for how to handle these, and discover if they are related to the performance problems. Searching for a solution through looking at bug reports, I've tried: * Running with fresh preferences.xml * Geometric bounding box * Reducing the complexity of the design * Hiding layers (there are 24 layers) to only ones that are relevant for the operation (usually only two layers) * Hiding rulers and scroll-bars * Maximising memory and threads (with restart) I'm out of ideas, and I hope that someone might be able to recommend something. If there are no ideas, I'll work on a design that I can share so that we could work though it. Thanks, Saar.

Inkscape build issues

There appears to be a build breakage in Launchpad - see link below. ../../src/widgets/eek-preview.cpp:499:32: error: ‘style’ was not declared in this scope gtk_paint_diamond( style, Also, last time I checked, 'make dist' when configuring with autoconf was not producing a valid dist, which I need in order to compare with the cmake-produced dist tarball. Would someone mind looking into getting that fixed up? These were removed when a highlighter plugin was removed from the CMS. We could get them back from a backup but I restored the format myself as it was encoded (with \r\n instead of line endings and many spaces had run away). Could you please check that the 3 codes are really conformant to the coding style, then correct errors or describe them? (PRELIMINARY NOTE: This is a feature request. I'm writing to this mailing list because it seems the tracker mailing list has been inactive since 2007. If I'm doing the wrong thing, please tell me how to proceed. Please forgive me if I'm causing any inconveniences and consider providing some guidance on to which wishlist should I address this request. Thank you very much.) * * * Hi everybody. First of all, excuse my English. It is not my mother tongue. Please also bear in mind that I'm not an expert Inkscape user and the terms I'll be using to describe my request can be ambiguous or even wrong (I hope not, though. ;)) I've been using Lilypond music engraving software (lilypond.org) for a while and I've been experiencing the pain of having to manually adjust slurs (actually drawn as bezier curves) when I want to get publishing-quality scores. The most straightforward way to achieve this is using \shapeII function in one of the following forms: \shapeII #'(()(polar 50 0.35)(polar 30 0.25)()) or \shapeII #'(()(absolute-polar 50 0.35)(absolute-polar 30 0.25)()) (Cf. the document by the creator of the function: http://lilypond-stuff.1065243.n5.nabble.com/file/n5705621/shapeII-examples.… , paragraph 4, "polar coordinates" info. Cf. also https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/lilypond-user/2013-11/msg00823.html for more information.) The point of my request is making Inkscape assist slur editing/fine-tuning in a double way: first, taking advantage of the direct graphical editing capabilities it offers, and secondly, providing the relevant information generated in such a form the Lilypond function can understand ---the more direct, the better. The intended workflow would be: 1) Lilypond compiles the text file and outputs a pdf file. 2) Inkscape imports the generated pdf. 3) Slurs are manually edited. 4) For each slur, mathematical/Lilypond-understandable info is shown/generated (possibly by tweaking some Inkscape extension in python?) so that 5a) it can be at least manually typed into the Lilypond file, thus saving endless, painful recompiling trial-and-error attempts to get the satisfactory slur. Or, ideally, 5b) the gathered/computed info is formatted (by the extension?) and shown (directly on the svg file, on an auxiliary window?) so that it can be copied-pasted onto the lilypond file, or, even better, 5c) piped to a script that modifies the original Lilypond text file by inserting the data properly. In this case, I don't know whether the fact that the requested feature can be written in python and that the Lilypond file can be manipulated using the Frescobaldi editor (frescobaldi.org), which is written in python and allows easy extension of its features through python snippets, could automate the process even more. :) Back to the \shapeII function, the relevant stuff for the present discussion are (absolute-polar 50 0.35) and (absolute-polar 30 0.25) parentheses. Graphically speaking, this pair of parentheses contain the mathematical description of the handles used to control bezier curves drawing in Inkscape. The absolute-polar notation that shapeII understands fits *almost* directly to the data about the angles of the handle that Inkscape shows at the bottom of the main window when you're moving it (That means Inkscape somehow already provides this data, the problem is how to made it available for the requested feature). The only thing that should be tweaked when doing the math is modifying the value Inkscape gives for the *right* handle. For this value to be valid in the lilypond shapeII function it has to be subtracted to 180: valid right handle angle value = 180 - Inkscape value Secondly, the info at the bottom of the main window also tells us about the length of the moving handle. The second numerical value inside the parentheses is the ratio between the length of the handle and the distance between the distal nodes: \shapeII #'(()(absolute-polar 50 A)(absolute-polar 30 B)()) where A = left handle length / distal length B = right handle length / distal length That means getting the info about the length of the handles (the same as with angles) *and* calculating the distance between two points, i.e., the first and last nodes of the bezier curve. I'm aware this can be manually done with the measuring tool Inkscape provides, but here an automatic calculation of the distance is needed. As I said at the beginning, I'm not an expert at all, but I think that this request can be easily implemented by a python programmer (perhaps based on Inkscape-0.91/share/extensions/measure.py file?) and it would mean a *huge* improvement for the Lilypond user's community. Paint-order attribute needs to be put in stroke properties dialogue

We need a checkbox for it in the stroke properties tab. Currently I think it's a compile-time flag, which means it's unusable for most users. Hello Saar, Indeed you found your culprit, but added to that I see a lot of transparency objects in your design. If you have many layers as your design does and each of those has transparent objects in them I can imagine that things got a tad slow. Instead of a simple integer being used to display a single colour every layer of transparency needs to get calculated, added to the the previous one using floating point calculations. I imagine that this is handled on a logarithmic scale 1,2,4,8 etc. per layer used or per overlapping object. If your bottom layers were masked stacks of the same type of objects, I can imagine that the calculations of the masks are applied after going through the whole object stack calculation. Maybe using clips instead would make the result faster as well as those are simpler calculations to my knowledge. In any regard using lots of floating points explains the delay in screen refresh as well. It certainly isn't the amount of nodes. Cheers, Jelle

I see we have many of these reflection modes which can only be reached via Edit/Clone/CreateTiledClones... E.g. the one above, http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Tiled-Clones It seems the paths can't be edited after tiling. I may be wrong about this but I can't work it out. (Only one shape can be selected at a time when hitting Create. I guess you have to group them first) I found this tutorial - http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Tiles.html I seem to recall a lot of UI work was done on a way to make his work - maybe a year or more ago. I'm clearly using the wrong google search terms :( Did any of it make it into a release ? GSOC ?
