hello, as a graphic designer, I am used to work with Adobe Illustrator and the PathEstimation features built in are very important for me. but I work under Linux now... When will the PathEstimation feature be available in Inkscape? For me, it is the most important feature (for the design of logotypes, arabesques... ) thanks a lot, sylvain

Sorry guys but we represent a very small share of the program's users, and even smaller of its potential users, both quantitatively (in number) and qualitatively (in not being professional designers). We should not take any serious feature decisions without as wide discussion as possible, and especially when we REMOVE something. Jabber is fine for quickly discussing small things, but this is a serious change which requires a balanced, slow, thorough discission. Jabber is not suited for this kind of discussions. Lauris did not invent this tool too; he copied it from other vector editors. Why do you think you better understand the needs of artists than, for example, creators of Macromedia Freehand (among others) which has the spiral tool??? >Does anyone use the spiral shape for anything? And seriously, I once spent an hour in Xara drawing a spiral by hand for one of my designs (Xara does not have a spiral tool), and it turned out to be so difficult that I quit, launched Freehand, created a spiral there, exported into EPS and then imported into Xara. So for me, the Inkscape's spiral tool is one of its very real advantages over Xara. I even mentioned it as such just a couple days ago to my wife, when she asked what was that new drawing tool I'm spending my time with recently! Even all that aside, how do you feel killing a feature which has almost 1000 lines of code, is well thought out, complete and convenient? There's simply no limitations to the kinds of spirals it can create - don't you appreciate that? Yes it has a bug, but show me a tool which has none! Were you seriously planning to add to the release notes, for example, "Answering many requests from impatient users, we finally managed to remove one the biggest Sodipodi's annoyances, the spiral tool?" Come on! Hi, I tested your dnd patch but I don't seem to be able to make it work. If I type in some SVG in your test program and drag it into inkscape, no object appears on the canvas, but there is a new empty <g> in the XML editor. Inkscape is branching off from Sodipodi with a clear road map and I believe, a brighter future for a vectors grapic program for Linux. It already is impressive with the user interface and, I think, much easier and nicer to use because of that fact alone. Peter, of Scribus fame, turned me onto it just recently. I decided after compiling it, that I should make a real rpm available to other SuSE 9.0 users. I have created a RPM for SuSE 9.0 and passed it along to the Inkspace developers to include on their download site. The src.rpm is there also, so other linux distro users might be able to alter the spec file enough to use on their systems. SuSE is now putting all their Gnome programs in /opt/gnome, in an effort to more closely adhere to the LSB. I don't think Gnome is located in the same location for other distros. Anyway, give it a look and see if you don't like the changes as much as I did. It still gives you all the Sodipodi features, plus a few more and expect many more after the new year! This came up in the Jabber channel this morning: (09:52:02) edmack: Hi, I was trying to install the most recent rpm, and it told me I needed libXrand.so, and after searching on rpmfind.net, I couldn't find it.. what's the name of the package that provides it?
