I would recommend English British as the default English setting, it is used by Europe, Africa, Middle East, China, India, Australia, South East Asia and Canada vs US English which is used by USA, parts of south America and Japan. It's important to standardise on the variation which most of the world have standardised on, and I do feel that because most developers are in the USA they will favour a us-English default (such is the problem with all software). I also agree that neutral word variations should be used were possible. It's better to have DOM hooks or SVG filter hooks, I'd like SVG DOM hooks for Perl, there is a way to provide a module writen in C++ or C which acts like a perl module, I'm sure there are similar things for Python. The big advantage of the current implementation is exactly this - that any developer knowing only Python and SVG can write an extension without any Inkscape knowledge. hi, I am not a developer yet, I am a student of informatics engineering, now, I have a idea to do shadows, using the border attribute of objects, in theory use a parallel degrade, started in the inside part of the border, and go to transparent at the end of border for shadow to out and reverse to shadow in. this is my idea (I don't speak English well), I will develop this option someday and bring it to you, now I bring you only a idea, if somebody developed this thing, tell me please, bye, PD:this shadow is something like the shadows of gimp or fireworks, this kind of shadows give realism to a image in svg

Visual feedback while snapping

Hi everyone Since it's my first attempt at trying to make things improve in a software, using cvs, and trying to understand a whole project (and written in c++... sometimes), please don't be too harsh on me and on my english level, I'm just a little frenchy :) Very used to illustrator, I miss some little things that make life easier, like moreeffective snapping. So I tried to understand the whole object tree, reading both the doxygen and the code (...when there were comments) and finally managed to have a patch made. The functionnality is a pretty little one, I just made guides highlight when moved objects snap against them. For now, this only works for dragged objects and rectangles being drawed. I post this for anyone to check if I do right, naming functions, indenting, thinking the whole problem, so please, feel free to over-comment my "work", for me to know if I can go on with these kind of updates. This is the first patch of my life, I hope I've made it well. Could you test that ? Next things I could look at could be : - Snapping modes (enable/disable) Bounding box and dots snapping. I thik it could be great too temporarily disable bounding box snapping, just to make sure only dots do it. - Providing visual feedback of which of these is used now (you grab a rectangle, its bounding box snaps a guide, the guide turns red (default highlight color), and a little text appears along the guide saying (snapping to boungbox). If you drag farther, the boundingbox will stop snapping and it's the corner dot that will do, so the text'll be "dot snapping" or something like this... maybe snapped dots could be highlited too - Making grid lines highlight when snapped, just like guides (it was much easier for guides since they are separate objects and the color/hicolor alread existed) - Trying to make more snapping objects... maybe angled guides, objects themselves, middle of objects, etc... all these could be mode enabled/disabled. What do people think ? What feature would you like most ?

Andre, As you know your icon set is now used as default in Inkscape SVN. But recently we reduced the size of the toggle buttons, and their icons now look less than perfect (e.g. the avoid/nonavoid buttons in the Connector tool). new packaging for OS X

Hi all, I updated the packaging for OS X so that when people open the disc image in which Inkscape is distributed they see this: http://jo.irisson.free.fr/dropbox/inkscape_distrib.png and just have to drag and drop Inkscape icon to Applications in order to install it. Yes this is mostly eye candy but well... this is on the mac ;-) I took the header from the tutorials. is it ok? This requires a custom 80Mb disc image with its background modified by hand so I don't think it's a good candidate to commit. Is there anybody who knows about a command line to apply a background image to a folder of the Finder? (it's the last point that cannot be automated in a script and that requires the 80Mb disc image to exist already). A packaged version of pyXML was tested successfully on 10.3 and 10.4 so I planned to ship this as a separate package in the dev builds: http://jo.irisson.free.fr/dropbox/pyxml_distrib.png Maybe it should be included in 0.44 too if effects are to be activated by default. I sent an email to pyXML developers to know if they want a particular logo/mention of pyXML in the package. I'll be unavailable for the next two months so I won't be able to produce Inkscape dev builds for the testing phase of the release, nor will I be able to package 0.44. I guess people will be available to do it. If this new packaging is ok to everybody and worth bothering, I'll modify the wiki to explain how to do it and somebody (Michael? Ted?) could take over the builds. Thinking about this, aside from the compilation issues, there's not really much more to do on the LayerManager side of things -- it's essentially complete. I think you should do what motivates you the most, so please decide yourself. My gtkmm work is waiting until after release. Also, I would need to address a problem in Desktop Preferences then, so I have not decided for me which dialog to convert next. But I just remember to ask you to add a button in Inkscape Prefs for "dialogs with/without close button" and maybe you want to expand what I wrote in the Wiki release notes about your work on that dialog?
