Peter, This Beta was issued in July. The final 0.4 release will include the last Inkscape release. I hope to release it this month (I've still a lot of work with the Google Summer of Code students...) I notice in yesterday's announcement of WinLibre 0.4.0 beta1 (http://www.winlibre.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=323) that it includes inkscape 0.41. You might consider doing something to save yourself from a barrage of "Inkscape gives this nasty error about missing dependencies" questions. One way of addressing this would of course be to switch to 0.42.2 :) . Are there any issues in 0.42.2 (not present in 0.41) that you'd like to tell us? Is the exclusion of 0.42.2 just because you haven't had enough time to test it (and there were some windows problems in the original 0.42), or is there something else? pjrm.

Pierre-Jean, tu peux voir les réponses à http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?forum_id=36054 si tu veux, et tu peux me répondre si tu veux que je fasse suivre à inkscape-devel.] Every now and again, we come across packaging problems on Windows, and we say "It would be good to be able to hand these problems off to distributors, as we do for a number of un*x distributions", or "Someone should create a windows package consisting of inkscape, gimp, and perhaps other gtk software, so that they can share libraries." I've just today discovered WinLibre, which does this: http://www.winlibre.com/en/index.php It comes in two variants: a 650kB version that allows you to select which components you want (like a net install of a gnu/linux distribution), or a 171MB version suitable for putting on a CD. However, I don't yet know to what extent WinLibre engages in packaging activities: i.e. do they just grab the Windows binary that we provide, or do they get the source so that they can share libraries between the programs ? (If it gives any clues, the News page mentions handling package dependencies, and that it uses InnoSetup 5.0.) Is there anything we can do to work more closely with WinLibre ? (Another compilation of Free Software for Windows is http://www.theopencd.org/. It has a good reputation, but it doesn't yet include Inkscape, and my impression from a couple of minutes at their web site is that they just use the binaries provided by individual projects rather than do much packaging/integration work themselves. As I say, that's just an impression that may well be wrong.) pjrm.

multiple selection and transform

Hi list, I would like to gather opinions about a particular usability point of inkscape and maybe suggest a change in the way transformations are applied. When selecting multiple objects and applying any transformation, they are treated as a whole. For example a rotation would rotation all objects around the center of their combination. I think it might be better to apply the same transformation to each object (and rotate each one around it's own center). Indeed, if you want to treat these objects as a whole you already have the possibility of grouping them (which is only one click), applying the transformation and then, possibly, degroup them if you want to further edit each object. On the other hand, let say you want to rotate at 45° twenty horizontal text items around their centers you will have to apply 20 times the same transformation. In addition, consider you want to rotate multiple selected object of 90°, there is at present an "inconsistency" in the transformations: objects are treated as a whole when rotating them with the transform palette but each object is rotated individually when using the "rotate by 90°" buttons of the GUI. More bugs with stroke

Just a few more bugs to report with the stroke dialog: 1) on a circle, the stroke width value spin button only increases even when trying to spin down. 2) End Markers a) for a line pointing to 8:00, the start/end marker is reversed, and then won't change b) at times the end marker popup does not display all the choices, or when you select one, it jumps to another. I would rank these as medium level bugs.

Of course you can change both colors and transparency of both ends of gradient (and of additional stops in between, though this is currently less intuitive than it should be). For example in Gradient tool select the bottom handle, open Fill&Stroke or Swatches and assign green color with no transparency to that handle. You can also use the Dropper to assign colors to the gradient handles. Or you can edit the gradient in the Gradient Editor (double click a handle to open it). -- bulia byak Inkscape. - Do we activate the Effects menu in 0.43? I think we should. - Did we find a volunteer to do static RPMs? The need for them is definitely there. - Michael, what of your TODO for the connector tool may be ready for the 0.43? Confirmation of dates for the Gimp? Conference

Hi all, So - we've decided on dates for the facilities for a GimpCon 2006 - March 17/18/19 in Lyon, France. The provisional plan is to have 2 days "open to the public" presentations of free software graphics software. The third day will continue to be open to the public, but there will be no talks planned. The day is available to developers to do a hackfest, or have meetings, or chat & drink beer. Perhaps all 3 :) I've confirmed talks from Oyvind Kolas on a general image processing talk, featuring his non-linear editor and the (future) new core of the GIMP, a talk from Sven Neumann on the GIMP, and a talk from MrB and mrdocs over at Scribus. I will also be contacting OpenICC, littlecms, GutenbergPrint (formerly GimpPrint), Krita and Xsane, to see if their developers can come, and if they're interested in giving presentations. This is going to be a cool weekend. It'd be great to have a presentation on vector graphics. Unfortunately, I don't know if there are any Inkscape developers in Europe, and if there are, whether ye're interested in getting together. Please drop me a line ASAP. inkview broken

In the current CVS, 'inkview *.svg' shows all SVG files on top of each other, i.e. does not clear the previous file from the canvas before showing the next one. Really weird. Does anyone have an idea of what's going on? -- bulia byak Inkscape. Draw Freely. http://www.inkscape.org

Inkboard, Win32 and 0.43

David mentioned he wasn't going to get Inkboard ported to Bob's PedroXMMP library before the feature freeze kicked in. Do we consider this work an effort to add a feature or fix a bug? I know there are plenty of people who would love to get this into the 0.43 release. Perhaps if I file a bug like "Inkboard doesn't work on Win32". :) Aaron Spike

Website translation procedure

Hi all, pistoncito asked about how to do translations of the website currently. I figure this suggests we need some sort of documentation, so here's a start. It sounds like we will need to change this process once we figure out how to do the automatic web browser language detection, but until that gets sorted out, we should use this process. I'll also post this to Wiki so folks can update it as better approaches are worked out for it. http://wiki.inkscape.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?WebsiteEditing Translating the Inkscape Website ================================ 1. Do a CVS checkout of the website module. 2. Create a subdirectory at the top level with your language code. I.e.: inkscape_web/es/ 3. Copy pages from the main site into your subdir structure, and begin translating them. Look in the other translated areas for examples of what needs translated. Note: The tutorial translations in the doc/ directory are handled separately from the website translation. These are the files in inkscape_web/doc/*/ that have .XX.html extensions. You do not need to do anything about these pages. Note: The translation of doxygen, wiki, and the various SF pages are separate from the website translation. You do not need to do anything about these pages. 4. Add a flag for your language in the images directory. It should be named inkscape_web/images/flag-XX.png. (where XX is your language code). Next add an img for the flag to inkscape_web/includes/header.php See how the other flags are done in that file as an example. 5. Add a news item to the index page announcing your translation. You are encouraged to write it in both English and your native language. 6. If you have CVS access, then commit your changes to the site. See the Website Editing and Working With CVS documentation for directions. If you do not have CVS access, then show your translation to one of the Inkscape administrators for review. They will then give you access to CVS and the website, so you can deploy your changes. Bryce
