Now that the letterspacing support is in, the next thing I will do is the proper support for dx and dy attributes (it's sort-of supported now but actually useless, because only single values are supported, not lists as per SVG spec). This will allow kerning pairs of letters in a string as well as raising/lowering of characters on the string. With all this, I need a set of keys for doing all the space adjustments in a text object from keyboard. These keys must be as consistent as possible with the rest of Inkscape. So, when you are editing text on the canvas: Alt+<, Alt+> expand/contract current line (not the entire text object - I think it's more useful this way) by 1 pixel by adjusting letter spacing Shift+Alt+<, Shift+Alt+> same, by 10 pixels (The above keys are already implemented - you can test them) Alt+[, Alt+] expand/contract text object vertically by 1 pixel by adjusting line spacing Shift+Alt+[, Shift+Alt+] same, by 10 pixels Alt+left, Alt+right kern closer/farther the pair of characters before and after the cursor by 1 pixel Shift+Alt+left, Shift+Alt+right same, by 10 pixels Alt+up, Alt+down raise/lower the character after cursor by 1 pixel Shift+Alt+up, Shift+Alt+down same, by 10 pixels All these movements are in pixels (as always with Alt), so the actual distance depends on zoom level. Zoom in for finer movement. Re: bug 890040 Actually the only guaranteed way to resolve the font mismatch problem is to support SVG fonts and embed fonts with documents. We will have to do this ultimately, if we want to be taken seriously as a design app. Other than that, we can be only "reasonably" sure. E.g. a user can take a Dingbats font and rename it to Times on his system. What we can do now: - Nathan, since you have access to different machines, could you please do a few tests to figure out what is the most common text font that would look OK for the tutorial? Just do a global search-and-replace of "Times New Roman" to any other font in tutorial.svg and see if it loads OK. I used Times New Roman simply because I have it, but I have little idea of what fonts arrive with modern distributions. Of course if anyone else can do this on his/her system(s) that would be great. Especially valuable are "bare bones" systems with no additional fonts installed. - Having default font configurable is probably not difficult to do, but it must be done in the libnrtype font matcher (so it does not take the first available font but looks up e.g. options.defaultfont) which I haven't looked at yet. This is a serious change that should have been discussed on the list first. When I first implemented transient dialogs a couple months ago, everyone seemed pleased with that, and this sawfish complaint is the first one ever received about that feature. I think sawfish users can easily set it to 0 in their local configs, while the majority of users will be disappointed to see that unsinkable dialogs are sinkable again. So I suggest that you reverse that change. letter-spacing

I just committed support for the letter-spacing CSS property. No GUI yet, but you can set letter-spacing on a text object via XML editor and it will work. (I just really needed it for my work, so decided to see if it can be done quickly, and indeed it can.) Please test! One problem is the em and ex units. I simply copied the Lauris' code which sets em equal to the font size and ex to 0.5 of the font size. Of course we need a proper way to extract the real em and ex values from the current font, but I don't know how to do that and if it's possible at all. (Or can Pango text help with this?) Most other window managers (like the default ones of Gnome and KDE) don't remove the decorations from transient windows. Complain to your window manager developers, or search its configuration - it may have a switch for configuring this. Nathan, Could you please test the solution to this bug on the original reporter's Sawfish WM? If it works acceptably I will close the bug. Now there is options.transientpolicy option that can be set to 0 (default is 1) to not set transient property on dialogs. No GUI yet, maybe in the next version. But you can set the option already by editing your ~/.inkscape/preferences.xml.
