0.44 development status

Hi all, I've compiled the status for the 0.44 development checklist. I'm sure this is already out of date, so please email me updates and I'll update next weekend. Luckily, most everything people are working on sound like they could be wrapped up by the end of the month, however the quantity of things going on suggests that at least some efforts may require longer. Thus, I would like to propose the following schedule for getting to Feature Freeze mode: Now - Development continues on the ~24 items identified For non-0.44 feature work, please use branches May 1st - Achieve completion of at least 50% of the items. Work continues on the remaining 12. Work ceases on any other features. Notification to translators Begin focusing on bugfixes. Identify preliminary "must-fix" buglist May 15th - Feature Freeze All feature development work ends Finalize the "must-fix" buglist Issue pre-release packages for testing Focus on bug fixes, translations, & docs TBD - Hard Freeze Translation work finishes Final resolution on all "must-fix" bugs Issue one or more release candidates TBD - 0.44 Release How does this plan sound? Layer dialog ============ This is an important feature for the release, and on MentalGuy's todo list. However, work has been stuck getting Inkscape::LayerManager to compile due to a subtle detail with sigc::mem_fun(), and it's uncertain if there is sufficient time to unstick it and finish the feature prior to the release. Additional people's help may be needed here. [Beyond the memory issue, are there other aspects to the layer dialog that others could help with, such as UI work or coding helper features or whatever? --bh] * Update Release Notes Fit Canvas to Selection ======================= This is a feature ACSpike has been working on, and plans to complete for the release. The patch is here: http://www.ekips.org/comp/inkscape/inx/current.diff ODG Format Support ================== Ishmal is working on this currently. It basically works and is 90% done; the one issue at the moment that needs to be fixed for the release is that image rotations are backwards. [I think this might be fixed now. -- bh] DOM Support =========== Ishmal has been working on this. The newest code is all imported and builds. [Is there anything else needing to be done prior to release?] SIOX Support ============ Ishmal has this over half done. The code is all imported and building, and the selection mechanism is about done. Getting Inkscape and SIOX intercommunication working, but this can be built as a filter to potrace, which simplifies things. There are some transformation issues that need to be sorted out. Extensions ========== Ted is focusing on cleaning up extension parameters and felt he'd have this wrapped up by the end of the month. The plan is to have longer text (tool tips) available, and a few more widgets. More spacing in the autogui will be added to make it look nicer. * Ted reports there is an unverified bug in the ordering of the effects in the menu, to be investigated. The Extension Editor is further off, and not being planned for this release. Snapping ======== !!! More info needed - Carl and Mathieu (and maybe Ralf?) !!! * Need to fix the freeze when dragging multiple selected objects: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1429049&group_id=9… * Update Release Notes Rendering Performance Speedup ============================= Andrius has a very interesting rendering speedup patch. The feature is complete and accepted for the release. There is one known issue to address with scrolling, but Andrius feels this can be fixed. * Additional testing needs to be performed Screenshots =========== Scislac has taken this task on, and plans to have it done for the release. Two screenshots are done currently, and one more is in the works. There will be a call for more screenshots on the Deviant Art site. Tutorials ========= Calligraphy is mostly done, and a few of the other updates to the other tutorials have been drafted but that stuff definitely needs more work. Should be possible to have them done by the end of April. Calligraphic interface tweak ============================ Bulia is working on this change requested by MentalGuy, and feels they are minor and should have no trouble completing for the release. Windows font handling bugfixes (DONE) ============================== Richard (cyreve) has completed these bug fixes and updated the release notes. * Update ReleaseNotes Python Extensions on Windows ============================ !!! No owner has been identified for this task !!! Bulia reports that extensions that rely on PyXML still do not work on Windows. Due to the number of python extensions, this would be a major missing feature for Windows users. Text/Fonts UI ============= deadchip (aka Milosz Derezynski <internalerror at gmail dot com>) has written a font lister Gtkmm class, to enable re-use of the font list. He is planning to write a font picker dialog, and rewrite the current font picker to use the font _listing_ class. This enables using normal Gtk components (ListStore, etc.) for accessing the font info. He plans to have this work done by May 1st, or May 15th at the latest. Windows "dialogs on top" Patch for GTK ====================================== !!! No owner has been identified for this task !!! This is not exactly an Inkscape-specific problem, since the code changes wouldn't be to Inkscape, but it would be nice to have it finally fixed. This 0.44 release effort may be a good vehicle to tie it to, but we won't hold up the release if it doesn't get done. Scislac had contacted the author previously. * Send a reminder email to the author to find status on this Undo/Redo Dialog ================ !!! No owner has been identified for this task !!! We have a patch for this, but the author has not been reachable. Also needed is undo annotations. * Unless the author or another developer takes ownership of this patch within a week or so, perhaps the wise thing to do would be to incorporate it right after the release, to give maximum debugging time for 0.55. New File Chooser in Export ========================== We have a patch for this, but there were some thoughts of embedding it in the export dialog directly. In the spirit of "patch first, discuss later", the best approach may be to stick in the current patch for 0.44, see what folks think, and do the embedding later. Additional Release Tasks ======================== The following tasks will need to be done for the release, but are not required to be done prior to the Feature Freeze: * Identify the list of must-fix bugs. To keep the freeze phase from dragging out, we will need to be very choosy in what we allow to be must-fix bugs. * Set up a ReleaseChecklist wiki page or similar to keep track of The List. * Designate 2 release maintainers. * Keep and update the above list and encourage people to achieve completion of the items. * Notify translators to complete translation work * Wiki updates + Update Roadmap + Review/Update FAQ + Update InkscapeFeatures * PR / marketing efforts + Plan efforts + Draft press release + Finalize press release + Send out press release [rejon] * Packaging Bryce

Dear Scribus & Inkscape developers, I love both your applications and would like to encourage my colleagues and students to use them. I notice that the OpenOffice team have now made their Windows version into an MSI package which will greatly ease the adoption of the package in University departments for example (which more commonly nowadays) often run WIndows Domains with centralized installation systems. Joining the Software Freedom Conservancy

Hi all, Inkscape's been growing by leaps and bounds this last year, thanks to all the efforts of its community. Part of the growth process requires formalizing certain things - such as how we handle Inkscape's finances. Up to now, I've handled Inkscape's finances as part of my own. However, with the income we'll be getting from Google, and the increasing amount of donations we've been receiving, now is a good time to set Inkscape up with a more formal way to manage its money. The Inkscape admins have considered a number of options. The one we like best is to join the Software Freedom Conservancy (http://conservancy.softwarefreedom.org/). For the past few months I've been working with the SFC, and just recently learned we've been accepted! Here's more info: http://inkscape.org/conservancy/ However, before this becomes official, there are three things I think we need to do: First is to give the community the opportunity to voice any questions or concerns before anything gets set. Second, we need to review the agreement that the SFC requires us to sign. Third, we need to select a set of official representatives who will sign the Agreement papers that cause Inkscape to become part of the SFC. As part of this, we need to decide how official (monetary) decisions will be made by Inkscape. This is required by the SFC mainly so there is a defined way for determining how funds will be spent. Do we require a full concensus of the Inkscape representatives? A simple majority? Or is the word of any one representatives enough? My own feeling is that a simple majority (3 out of 4 reps) is enough. We also will need to have a defined procedure for adding/removing representatives. Please review http://inkscape.org/conservancy/ and give some thought as to how we should organize Inkscape, and share your thoughts in this thread. Thanks, Bryce

I don't know what 'make check' does exactly but there's a great chance that it is run on a machine with a Cairo library older than 1.2 which didn't have the PDF backend enabled by default, thus it doesn't have the needed header file. Also, cairo-pdf.h is included with "" and not <> but I don't think changing this would solve the problem. In order to solve this Inkscape will have to depend on Cairo 1.2 right? Or the Cairo PDF exporter could be enabled via a configure parameter.

If not having cairo breaks the build there should be a configure check or a switch (--with[out]-cairo). PS: in addition the link to the patch to cairo mentionned in the last thread about pdf printing with cairo http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/cairo/2006-July/007477.htm gives me a 404 not found error. Windows Hassles HELP!. was " Updated PDF printing with Cairo"

Bob, and others, I am having nasty problems with current Inkscape downloads. I will be happy to know that I may be doing something stupid but I do not know what it is. The problems have been gnawing away for a couple of weeks but it was only within the last few days that I've had time to take a close look. I have done a fair bit of checking today and found: Problem 1. I freshly downloaded 0.44-1-win32.exe and set it up etc, and it works fine. The about screen says it was built on June 23 and the Inkscape.exe file size is 5832K. I brought down the Daily Build LATEST.EXE file 0607162003 from Mirrored Win32 builds. When I set it up it says it was built on June 15, with an .exe file size of 5822K. It works OK but I read that as saying that it is an older version and certainly not a July 16 build. Similarly the LATEST.EXE file 0607300220 opens up saying it was also built on June 15, with an exe file size of 5822K. This suggests to me that these LATEST.EXE files are only updated in name. Something seems broke in da woodpile. Problem 2. I have downloaded Bobs full size Inkscape versions 0607141303, 0607281436, and 0607300736. Each unzips and opens OK but then gives the error messages that I mentioned a day or so ago, and then borks. The exe file sizes are an orderly 6888K, 6994K and 7002K and the built dates are July 9, July 26 and July 30. This suggests to me that Bobs versions are current - wonderful, I love them-if only they would run for me. Bobs suggestion of removal or modification of Inkscape.dat don't make no difference. The sum of this appears to me that my most recent Inkscape is July 23 and that I'm stuck on this. What to do? Erik

Hi Bob, I've done some reinstalling and more checking. 1. Version 0.44-1 works perfectly. 2. Your versions 0607141303, 0607281436, and 0607300736 reinstalled, all show the reported error messages. 3. I copied the Inkscape.exe files of these versions into 0.44-1 and they again show the error messages. 4. LATEST-EXE files from Daniels site were obtained for 0607162003 and 0607300220. The exe files from these do not show the error messages when put into 0.44-1. I changed the Inkscape.dat file as you instructed but that did not seem to affect things. Same error messages.. I noted that the Inkscape.exe files of your versions are in the range 6888 to 7002, whereas Daniels versions and 0.44-1 are smaller at 5800 to 5900. Don't know if that is relevent or not. regards, Erik

Updated PDF printing with Cairo

Hi, I attached the updated PDF printing extension with Cairo. Now it has proper transparency handling and better text handling. Also, now it has it's own entry in the Save As dialog as "Cairo PDF". In order to use it you have to apply the following patch to Cairo 1.2: http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/cairo/2006-July/007477.htm Without applying the patch you will get only fallback images most of the time. I already separated the patch into smaller ones and submitted it to be incorporated into Cairo. The resulting text output in this version differs from that of Inkscape's regarding the positioning of glyphs. Text printed in PDF will usually occupy more space horizontally/vertically than as it can be seen in Inkscape. This is especially true for vertical text in which case spaces are smaller between words. Does anyone have an idea how I could get the exact glyph positions used by libnrtype to render glyphs? [I could only come up with crazy ideas like calling Layout::show with a prepared nr_arena and then extracting the glyphs later from that nr_arena] Unfortunately the output of the about screen for Inkscape version 0.40 isn't correct; it might be because of the mess with transparency inheritance. After applying patch.bin to the Inkscape source tree copy the other files in the archive to their respective location and do the usual build process. Rendering patch committed

All, I committed the patch by Jasper van de Gronde which improves the quality of rendering gradients (less banding). But on top of that, the committed version also speeds up rendering quite significantly, making it up to twice as fast in my tests (on complex files with many transparency overlays). Unfortunately for some reason, this speedup is observed only on Windows, whereas on Linux the patch is actually a little slower (by no more than 10%). Any ideas on why this is so will be appreciated, as well as of course any reports of bugs or any misbehavior. -- bulia byak Inkscape. Draw Freely. http://www.inkscape.org

The Fedora Core 3 thing

Aaron, Ralf, Bob and other posters, Thanks for all the information. I get the following general idea: Linux is much more complex than Windows, making it very difficult (I think Bob Jameson is implying that it is impossible) to (in the case of inkscape) create a tar.gz open-and-run solution. I am more than ready to be shown when I am wrong and I came to this with a certain attitude; one of not wanting to keep upgrading often, and so my mind was fixed on the examples given by Firefox, Thunderbird and Blender. I can run all of those apps, even the alpha versions, on my FC3 with no problems. In the case of Firefox, the tar.gz is my *only* option becuase FC3 does not support any version over like 1.0.x I am not as savvy on things like make and svn and C and C++ and all these newfangled (to me) incantations. It would take me months to get a fraction of the picture into my (very dim) head. So, I came here with a certain naive outlook, one of simply dropping-in the needed library files such that inkscape would run for me; and then sharing that with others who might be stuck too. I am going to focus some time on trying to compile 0.44.1 (I do read Ralf!) In the meanwhile I will hope that DAG or EXTRAS might have 0.44.1 as an RPM before long. Thanks all for a great app! Second try: Fedora and Inkscape - Help!

Hello, sorry to post this again, but perhaps it's not been noticed. If this is the wrong place to ask questions like this, please point me in the right direction. It's so frustrating not to be able to keep up with the latest stable releases of inkscape. I got one reply about compiling the latest svn or 0.44.1, but I would much rather just get 0.44 working without compiling anything. It just strikes me as wrong that inkscape 0.44 will run fine on Windows but not on Linux! SYSTEM: Fedora Core 3 : 2.6.12-1.1381_FC3 Machine : AMD i386, 1gig RAM, loads of drive space. PROBLEM: Cannot run Inkscape 0.44 Yum repo only has 0.43 - usually DAG. It appears he tried to compile 0.44 and had some problems. So, no yum update for me (or any FC3 users) Tried the Autopackage from the inkscape download page. It works in that it installs without overt error. Problem comes when trying to run inkscape: inkscape: /usr/bin/../lib/libpng12.so.0: no version information available (required by inkscape) inkscape: /usr/bin/../lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.4' not found (required by inkscape) My system has those two exact filenames (libpng12.so.0 and libstdc++.so.6) so a fake link technique is not going to work. I then tried to compile it. Harsh dependency errors. I don't have the time to go through the spin-cycle of sub-sub-sub compiles and yums to do that! So, I am in a fix. No Inkscape and not much hope! Any ideas? EXTRA QUESTION: Is there some way to put a complete, runnable Inkscape into a single tar.gz file like they do with Thunderbird and Firefox? I have never struggled to install the latest versions of those two apps. Sure, they take forever to reach a yum distro, but at least I can go fetch the tar file and get on with my life! SoC students (and others): refactoring ahead!

There are some upcoming changes in the codebase you need to know about. Namely, I'm nearing the end of the first stage of C++ification of SPObject: conversion from GObject to sigc++ signals. This means that instead of this kind of thing to connect to "release" or "modified" on an SPObject: g_signal_disconnect_...(G_OBJECT(object), ..., widget); ... g_signal_connect(G_OBJECT(object), "release", G_CALLBACK(&foo), widget); ...you'll need to do something like this: widget->release_connection.disconnect(); ... widget->release_connection = object->connectRelease(sigc::bind<1>(sigc::ptr_fun(&foo), widget)); I'll be glad to give you any assistance you need to convert your code to use the new API, which I've made available beforehand to ease the transition. Architectural fix for defs (for marker bug 1298718)

Over the past couple evenings after the DDC talks, mental and I have been hacking on one of the marker bugs, and last night managed to find the fix to it. It seems to work okay but I haven't had a chance to really exercise it so there may be some side effects... Patch is attached. The actually fix was a one-liner (as most things are), but in finding it we've also done: * Added clearer, more complete comments/documentation for the modify/update paths in SPObject and Document. * Factored out common code in SPObject subclasses for getting a child list; now this is provided by SPObject's new childList() member. * Refactored updateDisplay() and requestDisplayUpdate() to highlight their similarities; maybe this could suggest a better refactoring in the future. Now they're consistent at least. * Added new pseudo-private member function _updateDocument() to the Document class, which factors out the flag-based update code to a single place. sp_document_ensure_up_to_date and sp_document_idle_handler have been refactored to move their shared logic into _updateDocument(). * An Action enumeration thingee originally implemented in sp-item-group has been promoted up to SPObject. Honestly I don't quite understand the purpose of it, but it doesn't appear to hurt anything, so hopefully whomever added this knows what it's for and can put it to more use. The wiki has been moved to osuosl. Page edits and new registrations are disabled on the old wiki. And redirects are in place so that the old wiki shouldn't be accessible. Please everyone test it out. Try all the urls you can think of and make sure you get sent to the new server. Let me know if anything is broken. Q: Parameters for extensions?

I have been working on a new Export dialog, in order to get exports to use the Extension mechanism the same as all of the other inputs and outputs. I haven't seen Ted or anyone else who knows the mechanism well recently, so I thought I would ask here. One question: is there a singleton instance of each Extension module? In other words, can I use a db.get() to find the module, set some parameters, and then later in the module's code expect those parameters to be set? I think I can, but I'd like to be sure before I write a lot of code. bob

Hello, I have not subscribed to this list and probably won't, so I won't see any replies. The reason I am writing is because of the command-line options under windows. I am intending to use Inkscape via the command line for an ongoing project, and although I won't necessarily need to see the output, it would be nice. The FAQ says to send an email here if a user thinks it would be nice to include an official command-line version of Inkscape for Windows, so here it is. Thanks for an excellent piece of software. Hi all, I just moved the File dialog code to ui/dialog where it should be and fixed a minor error in its namespace. I adjusted the makefile_inserts for this. But let me know if this causes any problems. This is to get filedialog to fit into the dialog manager where it should be. Improved rendering quality

The second two just show the gradient in background of the "about" drawing, which shows the "problem" with current version of Inkscape more clearly (if you have a hard time spotting the difference, look for a dark band in the upper left corner in the old image, it shouldn't be there, and it isn't in the new image). Is this considered as interesting (if so, I'll try to clean up the patch and submit it to the patch tracker for review?), or will this become obsolete very quickly?

New hosting provider for Inkscape website

Hi all, A few weeks ago I mentioned that we'd be looking for new web hosting due to various problems we've had with SourceForge. For example, most of us probably noticed how atrociously slow wiki and screenshots were loading before, during, and after the release. Yesterday, the fine folks at Oregon State University's Open Source Lab (OSU-OSL) have been so kind as to give us a bare bones Xen virtual partition with gentoo, root access, and 10G of disk space. :-) http://inkscape.osuosl.org/ There's a lot left to do to get the machine set up and ready for regular use, but I've got apache up, and have directed our website to pull screenshots from the new system: http://inkscape.org/screenshots/ (Actually, the screenshots seemed to be loading fine at the time migrated them, but with SF who knows how long this'll last...) From now on, we won't have the loading problems. Next step will be to move the wiki over. This'll require setting up mysql, php, a brief downtime of the wiki, etc. which is all straightforward, but will take some time to do. As a plus, we'll be upgrading from the antique (and insecure) version 1.4.3 to the latest stable version, 1.6.7. Also, upgrading mediawiki will be considerably easier, so hopefully this'll help us stay atop the security fixes. Before we can move the remainder of the website over, we will need to set up account management tools, so we can easily provide ssh access to whomever needs it for web stuff. I'm guessing maybe a week or two? There are no plans at this time to move over anything else from SourceForge (mailing lists, svn, bug tracking, etc.) If it ain't broke... But there's no reason we can't move those things over and do them ourselves if we wish, we just need to ensure we have adequate sysadmin volunteers available to keep the services well maintained. Just a few quick notes on what I think. Simple majority: We need to make sure we agree on the definition of this. Especially how to handle abstains. Are they counted for or against or not counted at all. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simple_majority defines most of this and I think it is the definition we should use. I think there should be a seperate mailing list for votes i.e. inkscape-vote. That way votes don't get lost in the daily mails on the dev list. It also allows the record/process to be transparent to anyone wishing to see it. Board Members should be on a 1yr/2yrs cycle. "Half" of the board should start with 1 yr terms and other "half" 2yr terms. At the end of the term the the board can call for a vote of confidence and by simple majority vote be extended into the next part of the cycle. i.e. if Ricky James is at the end of his 1yr term and the majority vote succeeds he moves on to a 2yr term or if it is a 2yr term onto a 1 year term. If you use SourceForge services, you may have noticed problems using SVN/CVS. Gtk 2.8 for 0.45?

Up through 0.44 we've stuck to the Gtk 2.4 requirement, in order to minimize dependency problems for users. When we jumped from Gtk 2.0 to 2.4, a lot of users had installation troubles that we had to spend a lot of time helping with, so we wished to avoid that as long as possible. Yet 2.8 has been out a while, and has some new capabilities that would be nice to rely on. 2.8 would be more compelling of a change than 2.6, so if we have to put people through the trouble of upgrading gtk, it might be better to move them to 2.8. I'd like to propose that we change the dependency requirements for Inkscape to 2.8. Doing this right now gives us a maximum amount of testing time before 0.45. Would anyone see an issue with doing this in this next release? Bryce

I haven't fully understood what you mean when you say 'merge OCAL in Inkscape'. If you mean simply to provide a bundled clipart library with inkscape (like most drawing programs have) I agree completely to that. If this is the case, we could also easily create a new tool which will show a preview of all the cliparts and will insert a selected one into the current drawing. Such tool would make Inkscape easier to use for diagram drawing, for example. However, it is clear that when you say merging you also refer to OCAL infrastructure (like ccHost). Inkscape verbs for different Zoom percentages? (fwd)

Inkscape developers Is it possible to set up verbs (and keybindings) for different Zoom levels? (The file inkscape/share/keys/default.xml doesn't mention it if it is already possible.) If not are there any plans to make it possible soon? Since someone else expressed an interest in furthering the Adobe Illustator set of keybindings - and didn't follow up to my mail asking if they had made any progress - I started looking at creating a Macromedia Freehand style set instead/as well. (I plan to have it done as much as Inkscape allows within the 30 day trial period of Freehand.) One of the things this set of keybindings would need is various Zoom Magnifications at several different percentages, and also corresponding actions/verbs so that they could be assigned keybindings. (I was also confused and annoyed again by the use of ratios as zoom levels, leftover from Sodipodi which I find completely non-intuitive and hope perhaps they will at some point be replace with percentage zoom levels instead. It is incidental to the problem I'm trying to sort out at the moment but it would be a bonus if it could be fixed along the way.) -- Alan

Boost dependency removed

Hi All, Previously we were using routines in the boost/graph libs for connector network layout. I've now replaced these with a custom layout algorithm, so you should no longer need boost to build inkscape. I'll post more about the new layout algorithm once I've implemented a few more features. Building/installing from SVN using different --prefix problem

I used to be able to run two different version of Inkscape by installing the latest official release from Gentoo's portage, and getting the latest from SVN (just to see if any bugs or issues I want to report are perhaps already fixed) and specifying --prefix=/usr/development (for example) to the ./configure script before building, but it doesn't seem to work anymore. Did I do something wrong or did I check out at a bad time?

publicity materials for conferences, etc

Hello all, I'm wondering what the procedure would be to get funding from our project savings for publicity materials we can all use for conferences, etc. I am hopeful to print up: 1.) brochure 2.) business cards 3.) stickers I would ideally like to get this done before Siggraph (www.siggraph.org) in early August. Myself and Andy Fitzsimon are both going to be at the first ever Open Souce Pavilion which is a large shared space for Open Source creative applications on the main show floor which will feature Blender, Gimp, Inkscape, Open Clip Art Library, Creative Commons and others. Also, I can get you all into the exhibition for free if anyone is interested (I am writing another email about this). What is the best procedure to go about seeking funds/reimbursements, and for making sure everyone can get access to these printed materials. I have some students from San Francisco Art Institute that will help me create them, which is cool. I'm thinking this for a procedure: 1.) make a wiki page proposing the publicity materials 2.) set a window of approximately 3 days for people to comment and get feedback on the proposal 3.) Get the materials printed if ok and do any other requests 4.) Provide a clear path for others to get materials for conference and distribution Does this sound like a good solution for this? Also, hopefully you all see the benefits in getting some things printed up like what I proposed. It's certainly an interesting prospect, when I've looked at the open clip art libary I found it very uninviting from a developers point of view but quite inviting from an artists point of view. Although behaps Begal or Tenor will make the clipart more searchable and context heavy? Problems that I see: 1) Numberous Quality control failurers (or should that be none at all) 2) Duplicate listings 3) Not indexed by default 4) Problems with imbeded images and the curious way inkscape links instead of embeds. 5) Lack of developer transparency and direction. ruler and cursor coordinate issues

In trying to trace over a raster and setting the scale to produce lat long coordinates, I've run across the following issues after setting x,y origins and spacing. I'm not sure which are user issues vs program issues. Either way it's not behaving as expected. 1) Assuming I set x origin as 19123 - X Ruler shows the origin as negative rather than a positive and then decreasing instead of increasing 2) Y Ruler behaves correctly assuming SVG standard of Y increasing down but it is often necessary (as in this case of lat,long) to behave as Y up. What about the idea of a user preference that allows Y up ? (sure it's not reflecting SVG but is definitely a user benefit) 3) Cursor coordinates reflect relative coordinates from the origin rather than matching the rulers - this is very confusing. If there is a good reason for the relative behavior, then how about if it is made a user preference? 4) The grid settings allow for x,y spacing but not sure if it is units/pixel or pixels per unit - can we add some text to the dialog to clarify this or at least to the user docs (see below) 5) There doesn't seem to be much documentation or user guides on this subject though a start is in Kevin Wixom's user guide - maybe this user guide should be in wiki form so users can directly input comments and user info (a la wikipedia) 6) At least in the Ubuntu version, there are no links from the help menu to the on-line user guide or wiki. I think there should be.

As I'm sure everyone knows, hosting our website through SourceForge kinda sucks since it's so dang slow. Particular pain points are wiki and screenshots. SF is also continuing to prompt us about disk quota limits. But the challenge to switching is that inkscape.org gobbles *tons* of bandwidth - 130G last month! Back when we had some downloadable packages from our website it jumped to nearly 400G. What sorts of solutions are there that we could consider? Screenshots almost never completely load for me, I'm lucky if it loads more than 1/3 of the image before firefox throws a corrupted image message to me. The wiki issues you know about. The win32 related items require wget to obtain because the connection is lost 90% of the time... and not to mention it's SLOW when it does work. I've had a few occasions where the max transfer I can get from SF is about 14k a sec and then it loses the connection as well. Something that ties into it is that I'd really like to get the website redesign done (which the winner from the contest sent me the SVG to work from the other day... woohoo!). However, I'm afraid that even adding the minimal amount of graphics it has will do us even more harm when it comes to bandwidth and performance. Instead of the confusing toggle button, now the Controls bar for the Dropper tool has two checkboxes, "Pick alpha" and "Set alpha", which work as follows. Suppose you have an object selected and, using Dropper, click on an object which has red (#FF0000) fill and 0.5 opacity (half-transparent). - If the "Pick alpha" checkbox is off, the selected object will get the fill color #800000 (i.e. faded-out red) and fill opacity will be at 1.0 (opaque). - If the "Pick alpha" checkbox is on but "Set alpha" is off, the selected object will get the fill color #FF0000 (red) and fill opacity will be at 1.0. - If both "Pick alpha" and "Set alpha" are on, the selected object will get the fill color #FF0000 (red) and fill opacity will be at 0.5 (half-transparent). If you Shift+click instead of click, the same changes will be made to stroke color and stroke opacity, correspondingly. Note that in no situation can Dropper change the master opacity of the selected object(s), although it can pick it just as it does any other kind of opacity. -- bulia byak Inkscape. XML Style properties (filters)

There's something odd happening when one tries to add a 'filter' property ( e.g. filter:url(#filterid) ) to a style attribute, on a XML Editor dialog. The filter object is found (if it exists) and correctly loaded into the SPStyle object but in the end, for some reason, the 'filter' property is simply discarded and ends up not being set (try it yourselves if this sounds confusing). I've been debugging style.cpp and related methods exhaustively and can't understand why this happens, is there something that needs to be enabled somewhere else? Can someone more enlightened on this subject please provide some hints here?

PDF printing with Cairo

Hi, I attached the patch which can be used to try out PDF printing with Cairo. It's still in the early stages of development, with rudimentary text support, image support, and gradient support. In order to use native non-alpha gradients in PDF a patch for Cairo has to be applied (otherwise the result will be just fallback images when using gradients) which can be found there: http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/cairo/2006-June/007300.html [note that this patch introduces a bug: fallback images will be mistransformed]. First the patch.bin has to be applied to the inkscape source tree, then the pdf-cairo.* files have to be copied to src/extension/internal. Then do the usual build process starting with invoking autogen. Please feel free to test this and report any of your findings on this list. Best regards, miklos

Today I switched on my computer and after some minutes I got a warning message from my antivirus software (Norton Antivirus 2006) that it found the trojan Trojan.Zlob in the 0.44-exe and that it was deleted. After checking the Norotn virus database I found none of the registry entries and none of the files the trojan creates. Now I cannot even download the exe any more since Norton insists in finding this trojan. Although I suspect that this is a false alarm: Could you please check the Windows executables? Are there any other users which report the same infection with other antivirus software? I will now initiate a complete system scan and will let you know the results. Thanks for your response. OS X dev builds again

Hi all, Thank you very much for 0.44 which is brilliant. Now that I am back from no-internet-land I restarted the process of producing dev builds of Inkscape for OS X. A new build is there: http://inkscape.modevia.com/macosx-snap/Inkscape_20060629.dmg I changed the background image color to match the green color of the new website (which is great too... even if I think that blue fitted better to Inkscape that green ;-) ) and thought about how to represent the installation procedure in an international manner (see thread http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=15481499 ). In the end I stayed with my initial approach (i.e. a link to / Applications on which Inkscape Icon can be dragged) because: - the only text present is "internationalized" by the system itself - I read somewhere that even if OS X app bundles can be executed from anywhere on the disk, they are registered and really integrated into the system only if they are in /Applications (there is a startup job which looks into /Applications and registers new ones). Therefore, / Applications is really the place where to put them - it eases very much the installation procedure (= 1 drag and drop) The next problem of the user is to find out where is Inkscape once he dragged it onto the "Applications" link which I don't think is much of a problem because: - there is a link to /Applications with the same icon that in the .dmg on the left of every Finder window by default - it is a common procedure to put applications in /Applications :-) - starting from OS X Tiger a spotlight search will show Inkscape and, actually, all people I have seen using Tiger never navigate to Applications again but use Spotlight as a launcher - this is something that is likely to be even "more true" in the long run with spotlight taking more and more importance in the way the Finder operates (in 10.5 Leopard, the navigation in the Finder is going to be largely based on spotlight searches) I hope this is OK with everybody. As the .info.txt file mentions, this build is without Inkboard support because loudmouth is still not in Fink. Michael can you upload your Fink package somewhere so that I (and maybe other OS X compilers) can use it? Do you think it can go in the wiki page? Thank you in advance.
