numpy: include, give warning or ...?

Hi there, the .deb packages for Ubuntu do not seem to include a dependency for numpy, but the gcodetools depend on it. It's included in the snap, and also seems to be present for Windows and macOS versions. Some other extensions give warnings when it's missing (measure, perspective, dxf_outline,...) So, my question is: Should the gcodetools also just output a warning message with install instructions, like the other extensions do, because there's a reason why numpy cannot be made a dependency? Or could numpy be made a dependency? (I guess that's more a question to packagers - do we make any recommendations anywhere? Or do they need to figure it all out by themselves?) Maren

credentials repo moved to new location

Just a quick note that the credentials repository has been moved, as discussed last board meeting. When we switched from bzr to git, the credentials repository was moved over as a branch of the inkscape codebase. Apart from being awkward it also made it very slow to download (since it was downloading the entirety of the inkscape code history, only to replace all the code with the credentials stuff...) Anyway, I exported the git history and imported it as a new project, which will live here in its new permanent location: https://gitlab.com/inkscape/infra/credentials I've also made this private to logged in Inkscape project team members only. No one outside our project should really need this so I think that is appropriate. Let me know if you run into problems, and I can adjust permissions and things to improve convenience. (You'll also notice I'm putting project internal service-ish stuff like this into a subcategory 'infra'. As we go through updating mailing lists, wiki, forums and other such things we can use this to collect random bits and pieces like service configs here.) Bryce

Sticker drama

Okay, so I made the mistake of paying a sticker printing company before I got a proof. I did this because usually printers are trustworthy enough to A) give a good proof, B) Accept changes needed, or C) refund if they can't (or in this case, just won't) do what you want). I'm sorry to say that discountsticekrprinting.co.uk can't handle any of these things. So I've learned a valuable lesson - never pay before proof. Since I can't seem to get my money back from them due to their customer-hostile purchase agreement, I'm going to have to get substantially larger stickers from them to compensate for their incompetence. - Something that will not look silly with a 3mm gap shoe-horned into the space around the graphic on the sticker. My questions are these: 1. How big would you like to see? 2. How big is useful or tolerable? :) 3. How big is "way too big" The choices are: 60mm, 80mm, 100mm Part of me wants to go like HUGE (100mm), because maybe we could sell them for a few bucks each to recoup sticker costs - maybe people would like to slap one on a CPU case or a skateboard or bumper of a car or something. I'm going with some other company for the 40mm silver stickers, since they look absolutely silly with an enforced 3mm gap around the edge - None of the other companies I've gotten quotes from are willing to inflict that nonsense on their customers. Any thoughts? Thanks. -C

I want to know how simple it would be to disable the GUI and mouse cursor on hot key press to draw directly to screen for Desktop cam live animations. Also want to set move group functionality to wasd , arrow keys or numpad to control 3 things at once. Or use mouse to move and possible mouse wheel to zoom or snap to splines pathings and mouse wheel tweening. Any ideas on how much work this feature would be? Turning off gitlab's "Allow users to request access"?

There's a setting "Allow users to request access" on our Inkscape main group (https://gitlab.com/inkscape). I'd like to switch it to 'off'. Are there any objections if I did this? This setting adds a button to our website for logged in users to push to send an email to our admins asking for membership to the inkscape main group. The effect of this gives them commit access on the inkscape repo (and I suspect maybe other git repos in subgroups; I'm not sure how the permissions propagate.) This was useful initially when everyone was needing gitlab access, but I think all the existing committers that want it have it. These days the requests we're getting are mostly from people with no registered activity related to Inkscape; we've been getting a handful of these invalid requests each month. Maybe they're clicking it on accident, or thinking that it's an affiliation mark, and not realizing that it gives full commit rights if granted. Turning it off simply removes the button, it wouldn't mean any change to our existing policies regarding earning of commit rights - applicants still need to get two patches reviewed, accepted, and landed and then contact one of the administrators to request access. (If we want to make this simpler later on, maybe one day we can rig up a form where they can enter the SHAs of their two patches.) Bryce

Do people like them personalised like last year, or would you rather just have generic ones that all attendees get? 3. Do we want another order of (slightly larger) generic inkscape stickers to hand out at these events (especially LGM seems like a great place to hand them out). 4. Anything else?

how to update an Inkscape repository

about 6 months ago I created a fork of the inkscape code at: https://gitlab.com/alvinpenner/inkscape 1. now that is obsolete, and I would like to sync it with current Inkscape to bring it uptodate. Is there a button for this? 2. alternatively, I would like to delete the repository and start over. Can I delete it? 3. also, the original Fork button that I used appears to be gone, is it still possible to fork code? sorry about the numerous questions, but I just spent 2 hours searching for these things and cannot find them, the gitlab website seems to have been redesigned since I last used it. Hackfests 2018

Hi All, We will are planning two hackfests in the next few months. The first will be in Boston March 26th through 30th. This is our main hackfest for the year. It will take place at the RedHat office at 300 A Street (easily accessible by pubic transport). A formal vote by the Inkscape board to fund travel to this hackfest has not yet taken place but it is envisioned that travel support will be the same as for last years Paris hackfest. A second mini-hackfest is tentatively planned be held in conjunction with the LGM meeting in Seville, Spain April 26th through April 30th. Details are still to be worked out. Google may be providing some support for travel to LGM. They are interested in adding Variable Font support to Inkscape. The Inkscape board has discussed funding travel for Inkscape developers to this hackfest up to a limit of half that for the main hackfest. Inkscape is SVG

Hello Inkscape-makers, I found this ammusing, while searching for "CM350 brother inkscape" in google, google sometimes searches for synonymous terms. In this search is adds 'SVG' as a synonym for Inkscape. So google things Inkscape IS the same thing as SVG. That's a super cool position to be in, in an odd kind of way. Because it says that googles black box thinks that the pinnacle of SVG, the exemplar, the practical reference for the standard IS Inkscape. OK, back to work. :-) hope everyone had a good new year. Trunk PPA working - Merry Christmas!

Hi All, Hope everyone's having a nice holiday. I've fixed the Trunk PPA uploads. The issue was that since we moved to git, there is no longer a universal sequence number for the commits... in other words, every time we merge a branch, the auto-numbering got screwed up. The solution (albeit a bit ugly) was to move to time-stamps in the version string, as recommended by the Launchpad documentation [1], rather than using a commit log number. The version strings for the built package now take the form: 1:0.92.0+devel+{time} This expands to something like: inkscape-trunk_1:0.92.0+devel+201712242340~ubuntu17.04.1 So it's a bit messy, but it's still a unique sequential ID. holiday graphics for website?

Hi Friends, I'm thinking about starting a tradition of making holiday graphics for the website. Like for example, today I spiffed up the logo for Inkscape Community with some lights (not twinkling, but maybe next year ;-p ). https://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php I'm thinking of just something small and simple like that. Holly and berries, or something. We couldn't do exactly the same thing on the website, because the logo doesn't work the same way as IC. (plus it's pretty small) But there must be some ways to easily slip in some extra graphics into the website? Like maybe in the menu/navigation bar? (could they be red and green? or look like snow is piled on them?) Or the white space between the logo on the top-left and the search field on the right? I saw that cute Inkscape logo with a santa hat in the gallery (https://inkscape.org/en/~jiawhein/%E2%98%85inkscape-logo-christmas), and that's what got me started. But unfortunately, it has a solid white background, which I don't think could be used for the site. I requested either SVG or a transparent PNG, but no answer yet. I made some sort of straight lines of lights, one of which might fit in the white space at the top. But alone, they're hardly creative. Anyway, if someone could explain what those ways might be, where we could sneak in some cute graphics around holidays, I'll take the responsibility to put out a call for such graphics before each major holiday.....or maybe just 4 seasons? Or maybe holidays plus 4 seasons? (I still want to see more graphics on the site, in general. But that's a much bigger project which I can't take a leadership role right now. GDL broken under Wayland

Hi, It appears that GDL (Gnome Docking Library) is broken under Wayland. >From what I've figured out, the problem is that Wayland doesn't have the concept of global windowing position which means that GDL doesn't know how to do drag-n-drop.[1] The blue "pseudo" window used to indicate where the window is while dragging does not change position. GDL doesn't seem to be under active development so I can't see this being fixed upstream soon. (There were a handful of commits last year, mostly for translation updates.) The code and our interface to it are rather complicated and it would probably take someone a considerable amount of time to fix it. Ah, I see. My machine (a Brother SE400) can't cut the thread and continue stitching. It's a pretty difficult limitation to work with. I try to avoid jumps whenever possible, and when I have to, I place jumps such that they're easy to trim by hand. Spin slider widget, redux.

Hi all, I've taken into account all the feedback and have developed a little test program that shows of a number of solutions to replacing the Gimp Spin Scale widget. A gzipped tar file of the source code is attached so that you can try out the solutions (should be trivial to compile on Linux if you have the Gtk3 libraries). Not all of the solutions fully work as I didn't take the time to make them... but you should be able to get a feel for them. If you run in debug mode (see README) you can interactively add CSS. I've include an example CSS file you can paste into the debug window (ignore the colors, they were just for experimenting). I've also attached PNGs of the widgets with and without the extra CSS. The five solutions, from top to bottom, are: * Custom Gtk::Range widget couple with Gtk::Spinbutton: This is my current favorite. It works quite well, methinks. Use the 'Alt' key to get into fine adjustment mode. It was rather simple to implement. Could be refined further (add styling properties, rounded corners, etc.). * Gtk::Scrollbar coupled with Gtk::Spinbutton: Works rather well, but doesn't show as well the current value. Using a narrow "slider" prevents it from covering up the text (text not implemented yet). I didn't know it before, but if one clicks on the slider and doesn't move for a second or two it enters into a fine- adjustment mode. * Gkt::ProgressBar coupled with Gtk::Spinbutton: CSS can get this looking pretty good but some extra work has to be done as the ProgressBar doesn't have an "adjustment", the class that actually handles tracking a value. The Gtk::Spinbutton actually contains a ProgressBar but while one can style it via CSS one can't directly access it and it overlaps the numerical entry part of the SpinButton (this is how the Gimp widget works). * Subclassed Gtk::Spinbutton: This is essentially a modified version of the Gimp widget but it has some major flaws as one cannot access the underlying widgets (ProgressBar, Buttons). In this example, the built in ProgressBar is disabled and new code that simulates a narrower ProgressBar has been added. I could not fine a good way to calculate how much narrower the new bar needs to be to not overlap the numerical entry part. Also, when dragging the bar it is easy to highlight the numerical text. The code to do all this is pretty messy. * Gtk::Scale coupled with Gtk::Spinbutton: CSS can make this look reasonable. Reducing the size of the circle will prevent it from covering text (text not implemented yet). Gtk::Scale also has a fine-adjustment mode accessed the same was as for a scrollbar. Tav

Stickers are here! ... now what?

The stickers arrived today. They are of acceptable quality, but I think 300dpi is a little low quality for stickers this small. Also I think the cutting machine had some ink residue, because the border of stickers are a bit dirty on the cut. So, who wants/needs stickers? The 4 operations are descructive by default, so I dont see any problem to convert to path and allow finish the operation wanted by the user. Spin slider widget: Opinions needed!

Hi, I've been looking into replacing the Gimp Spin Slider widget (e.g Blur/Opacity in the Fill and Stroke dialog). The widget is licensed under GPLv3 and is the only reason Inkscape as a whole is licensed under GPLv3 rather GPLv2.. The board sometime ago agree that being a GPLv2 program was desirable (I don't remember the exact reasoning). A normal Gtk Spin Slider (aka Gtk::SpinButton) has an option to show the "progress" of slider, that is the percentage (defined in some arbitrary way) between a minimum and maximum value. This in Gtk 2 is shown as a solid blue bar with width proportional to the value that covers the widget from top to bottom. In Gtk 3 the solid blue bar is replaced by a thin blue bar at the bottom of the widget. As far as I can tell, the Gimp version of the slider makes three changes: 1. It allows for a label inside the widget. This is a nice space saving feature. The widget handles changing the label text from black to white as the progress bar moves across the label. 2. It allows for a non-uniform scale by adding a "gamma" factor. 3. It adds the ability to drag the progress bar to change the value. If one drags from the top (down arrow cursor) the change follows the cursor directly. If one drags along the bottom half (double headed cursor) the change is finer and relative to the current value. I've always found that dragging the progress bar to be a bit awkward. One problem is that one can not start the drag at the far right of the widget as that area is reserved for typing a value directly in. Also, the different functionality of starting the drag in the top of the widget vs. the bottom of the widget is confusing. Since I am rewriting this widget, I can adjust it to what people want: * Do you want the progress bar? * If so, should it be the full height of the widget (quite a bit more complicated)? * Do you want to be able to drag the bar? Hey there, I want to see whether I can do some optimization with the extension interface. My first idea is to have a two pass approach. First see whether the plugin only changed node attributes, and only replace the whole tree when nodes were added/removed or reordered. If this works, it would at least make JessyInk usable on large files. If that works out, I think there are some other low hanging fruits that can be picked. Anyway, as I know that I often do drive-by wiki editing I'm requesting wiki access right away. :-) Cheers Morty

Hello all. I need a much-simplified, bare-bones version of inkscape for a small home school project I am starting. Our students will write handwritten essays / short answers, and submit those homework images (they are jpgs, gifs, etc). I need a program to help "mark up" those images, and then save the image, and store the grades in a MySQL database. *"Marking up" the image:* - I need to quickly be able to add grading marks to the image, such as "SP" (spelling error), "GR" (grammar error). I can easily add these marks now by adding custom symbols to inkscape and then dragging them onto the image. But, I would prefer instead to be able to this via custom tools in the toolbar. - Whenever I add one of these marks, I want to subtract the appropriate number of points from the "perfect score" (e.g. every time I add an "SP" for a spelling error, the grade goes down by 1 point, etc). So, there needs to be shown a little box with the current score. - If I make a mistake and add one of those marks by accident, and delete it, the score goes back up. - I need to have the screen split into two parts (with two images showing): the top image is the student image being graded; the bottom image is the "official answer" (also an image). - I need to have a little list of images to correct - that is, a list of all images that need to be corrected. As I click on the list, it will load that student image. - When an image is done being graded, there will be some simple button to "Save" - All unnecessary options and features will be disabled (or at least hidden) - unnecessary tools, the main menu, toolbars, etc. I want a very simple interface. *MySQL*: - The list of images needs to be loaded from the database. - When each image is done being graded, the score needs to be stored in the database; the next student image in line needs to be auto-loaded, etc. Thanks! Animated Rendering Is it Possible

You might have seen some of those "explainer" videos on the internet that show people drawing on a white board to teach various topics. I have charts and imagery I've already drawn in inkscape that I'd like to animate the strokes and make them into explainer videos. I'm not worried about saving them to video format at this time; only interested in displaying them as animated drawn paths. It seems like all the pieces are there.. the sequence of the paths, the direction of the paths. Does anyone think it would be as "easy" be taking the rendering engine and putting a user defined delay in each path node draw call? Would display buffering have to be disabled? Is that something that a plug in could do in inkscape? or is rendering logic protected from plug ins? or maybe someone else has done this already? Side Note: I did run into similar functionality in an app called queekly, but their rendering is unpredictable. during editing some of my marks got put in a difference sequence. sequence is important in this case. "Proper" way to avoid function name conflicts?

Hi all, just stumbled across something again I always wanted to ask the devs more familiar with C/C++ than me: If the same function name is used in two third party C libraries, is there a good way to avoid this name conflict without changing the third party library? Background is a conflicting function name in libwmf and libuemf that caused some crashes [1] and was fixed by Tav by renaming the function in libuemf [2] which works as we have a copy of that library but obviously will cause issues if we attempt to update the library with upstream code at some point in the future. Check new code in release mode

Hi all. We notice differences running a Inkscape build in release mode then in debug mode, normaly in debug mode works but not in debug mode. Gtk3 Trunk/Master Status

Hi All, At the last Inkscape board meeting I was tasked with looking into the status of our move to Gtk3. I've updated the Gtk+ 3 issues wiki page: wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/GTK%2B_3_issues Here are what I consider to be the big blockers to a 0.93 release from the Gtk3 perspective: 1. Filter Editor dialog rewrite. Our custom Filter Editor dialog is seriously broken with Gtk3. Some work was done at the hackfest on rewriting this dialog from scratch. This needs to be finished. 2. Crash in Wayland with docked dialogs. When Inkscape is run under Wayland and there is a docked dialog, opening a new Inkscape window causes a crash in the GDL code. 3. Icons themes. We've removed our custom icon handling code and now rely on native Gtk icon handling. This means that each icon is now in its own SVG file. In principle this should allow theming to work properly but more work needs to be done. All the icons are currently dumped into one directory. They need to be in put in subdirectories according to the common desktop spec and the Inkscape code updated to use the directories. 4. Icons missing in toolbars. Icons are often missing in toolbars until the window is resized. There are quite a few other major bugs that should be addressed as well listed on the wiki page, some of them may be candidates for blockers. Please give your feedback here and/or on the wiki page. Hey all. As requested of me at the board meeting, I've typed up a "common sense" draft of what I think is in-line with the project's purpose and goals. I thought about all the ways I could think of that a sponsor could make the project look bad with their actions, so here's the result: Sponsorship Requirements: The Inkscape project was founded to serve a world-wide community of artists, hobbyists, designers, scientists, engineers, and people everywhere by providing free and open source software (FLOSS) tools for vector graphics production. Since our sponsorship offerings include the service of exposure on our website, we require that all sponsors meet the following criteria to ensure a mutual compatibility with the spirit of the Inkscape Project. Thus to qualify for sponsorship, a sponsor must be: 1. A Legal, Law-Abiding Business - Must be registered as a business, pay taxes, and maintain a good standing with their customer base, and the country(s) in which they do business. 2. Politically Neutral - Our community is vast, and serves users from all walks of life and political views. The Inkscape Project does not, and therefore must not be seen to support one any particular ideology (beyond that of our belief in the essential software freedoms), and thus can not accept support from organisations of a political or religious nature. 3. Supportive of User Freedoms - A sponsor must not have a history of abusing user freedoms. This includes the sale of and promotion of proprietary software as part of the sponsor's core business, which we consider incompatible with the project's goals of user freedom. 4. Supportive of the Environment and the Future - The Inkscape Project can not accept donations from companies which promote the destruction of the environment. This includes companies which fund climate change denialism, anti-science groups, and members of the tobacco and fossil fuel industries. 5. moderation - 'could have been made w/Inkscape'

Hi Friends, I think I probably know how the community leans on this. But since it bothers me so much, and happens so often, I thought it was worth not assuming the answer, and finding out for sure. A few months ago, we decided not to allow random photos in the gallery, which are unrelated to the project in any way. We also decided not to bother with copyright issues. (long discussion - https://sourceforge.net/p/inkscape/mailman/message/35798617/) Probably equally as often as random photos being uploaded, are images which *could have been made with Inkscape* but which I doubt were. So far, I've been letting these go through. But as I said, I wanted to have a discussion, rather than assume. Here are a couple of recent examples: -- 2 images, 1 resource and 1 thumbnail -- https://inkscape.org/en/~noahgabe@...3618.../%E2%98%85music -- https://inkscape.org/en/~KristiBryant113/%E2%98%85jesus-saves-the-world2 (I did a little research on this one, and found it at many different sites (many on different sites selling tshirts, as well as just web images) with the same basic image (and this exact image here: https://res.cloudinary.com/teepublic/image/private/s--rVeDm8Gt--/t_Preview/…) -- so I'm pretty sure it wasn't made with Inkscape) --https://inkscape.org/en/~chiquitita/%E2%98%8515230751-703016283207581-8475381764676214363-n To me, all of those /could have been/ made with Inkscape. But I have reasons to doubt all of them. How do you all think they should be handled? I think they should be handled similarly to random photos (contact the member, explain and link to CoC, ask to explain the relation to Inkscape, ask if they would like to remove, inform after 2 weeks we will do it, of course with graciousness. Or do we let them have the benefit of our doubt? I honestly don't understand why people go around posting random images (apparently, afaict) in random galleries, once or twice, and never come back. (I have the same curiosity about people who post 1 or 2 frivolous, sometimes meaningless messages in forums and never return.) But it seems worth the effort not to waste our limited resource on hosting these things. Anyway, thanks for any thoughts or comments :-) All best, brynn

Is posible create similar thing like the one for windows described a little time ago in Appveyor for Appimage to allow user coexist easy 2 inkscape versions without need install&reinstall PPA needs because same package devel and stable? Inkscape 0.92.2, win64: install additional Python modules

Hi, I have written an Inkscape extension (https://github.com/seebk/LaTeXText) that requires additional python modules (PyGObject). In previous Inkscape versions on windows, I could simply install the PyGObject module into the Inkscape/[...]/python/site-packages subfolder from the official PyGObject windows builds. However, since 0.92.2 it seems that the windows build and python version changed and is incompatible to the PyGObject windows builds. What would be the recommended way to add modules to the Python distro bundled with Inkscape on windows? I tried to use the python module from msys2/mingw64 but did not succeed. The import of gi fails, it misses some DLLs. Unfortunately, the error message does not give detailed information what exactly is missing. Thanks for your help! Sebastian

Confusing windows build instructions

Hi all, Today while perusing the varied Windows build instructions I was struck by some contradictory, or at least, not fully fleshed out text. For instance, it says here: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Compiling_Inkscape_on_Windows Warning: As our 32-bit development libraries (devlibs) currently do not offer GTK+ 3 (which is required by trunk) you have to follow the instructions for 64-bit builds or use MSYS2 if you want to compile the latest code (lp:inkscape)! Is "lp:inkscape" the name on github too? The Msys2 page says here: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Compiling_Inkscape_on_Windows_with_… nothing about devlibs. Presumably it doesn't need them anymore and msys2installdeps.sh takes care of it? Never having used Msys2 it isn't entirely clear what the "gtk3" install (for instance) is. If there is no devlib for gtk3, what is this? More like a cygwin library? The 64 bit build page says here: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Compiling_Inkscape_on_Windows_64-bit in several places to use "mingw32-make". No explanation why 32 and not 64. Somehow related to "win32 threading model and SEH exception handling"? Finally the visual studio page says here: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Using_Visual_Studio "Follow all steps of guide Compiling Inkscape on Windows." At that point one has a fully compiled and working Inkscape. Why bother with Visual Studio? For the IDE? Is there a discussion in the wiki somewhere about other IDEs, like CODE::BLOCKS or Eclipse? Do any of these give instructions for packing up the built Inkscape so that it can be given to somebody else, like in a zip file? As I recall there are a bunch of dll's that need to be copied into the Inkscape folder from other locations (devlibs/bin, mostly). That was for an Inkscape built with mingw and msys and devlibs. What about Msys2 and whatever it is using for libraries? Hi Reidar, Thank you for your comments. Anyone is welcome to share their comments. It's not an interruption - it's what I was asking for :-) I agree about integrity. I really would like the gallery to have only Inkscape images. But considering this post was answered by only 2 people, I guess the community isn't very concerned. So I probably won't change much, if anything, about the way I handle these images. If we start to run short of space for the gallery, maybe we would want to revisit this. But for now, it doesn't sound like the community is concerned about this. Thanks again for your comments! Should Inkscape use fonts from folder of currently opened SVG?

Hi all, I'm currently implementing functionality which allows Inkscape to use fonts *not* installed on the system [1]. * Suppport for loading fonts from share/inkscape/fonts as well as the fonts dir in Inkscape's configuration directory is already added. * Support for custom locations configurable by the user is provided, too. * One task is left: load fonts from the location of the currently opened SVG document While the last point could be especially interesting (e.g. it would allow people to simply distribute fonts required by an SVG alongside with it) it's also a bit tricky: fontconfig scans directories recursively. This means if the user were to open an SVG file somewhere at the top of the directory tree, fontconfig suddenly would scan *a lot* of directories for fonts. So I basically want to collect some opinions: * Do you think this would be acceptable? In that case I'd probably implement a boolean setting which defaults to false and explains the risks. * Could it make sense to rephrase the task a bit to "load fonts from the 'fonts' directory in the folder of the currently opened SVG"? It might be an option to offer this functionality while reducing the risk of indexing a large amount directories, however discoverability of the feature would be significantly reduced. * Should I just skip the last task? * Other ideas? Some are mostly board-related, but most can be of interest to the whole contributors community. Note that on launchpad links from a bug to a patch/revision are all entered manually. Whatever the bug system migrates to, it would be nice if that function would be integrated. Ie, place a patch on the bug reporting system, hit some "push patch" button, and presto links are made in both directions between the bug reporting system and the revision system, once the new revision number appears. The Inkscape Project is a non-profit, volunteer-driven organization that develops and maintains the popular Inkscape vector drawing software, provided freely to millions of artists, designers, and other drawers of lines. These will be presented to Inkscape's board, who will make the final determination in about a month's time. == Background == We currently have various services hosted at a number of different locations with widely varying administrative capacities. We would like to centralize the administration of these services, such as consolidating them onto one platform. We also want room and flexibility to easily install additional services as we grow. Services high on our priority list to migrate soon include mailing lists, Mattermost, and wiki. Bug tracking, web forum and gitlab are potential secondary priorities. Our Django-based main website may also be worth consolidating at some point in the future. Our windows binary has been false-positived by virus software in the past, but we clear this up ourselves. * Currently our website hosting is sponsored and managed by OSUOSL. It's a root access virtual machine running postgresql, memcached, nginx and the django site itself. Memory usage is 450MiB per web host thread, currently 2 threads, plus 500MB for postgresql and 500MB for memcache. CDN is hosted by Fastly, currently serving 32TB per month for Inkscape (1:1.5 ratio US:EU, so more EU hits overall). There's enough dynamic content that we still see a decent load (1/2 TB/mo) on the server, notably around major releases (once every year or two); we are continuously tweaking optimizations.

Hi, I've checked the files in the src directory (without those in subdirectories) with Cppcheck. The attachment contains the results as an XML file. You can open it in the Cppcheck GUI e. g. to restrict the items to errors only. (There are very few ones.) A future idea: SVG internet kickstarter

Hi Inkscape developers and those who are with Inkscape developers, This idea just hits right in the back of my head, the minute that Inkscape gets bugs fix, and a few more improvement, would it be possible to have every Inkscape users as possible to make their SVGs, and ask internet browsers and so on to support gradient mesh, and other things by getting them to make some sort of text to support SVG development and they post their SVGs on the web? Something like some sort of yearly campaign. I know this might not amount to much, but it's just something.

Git version/ MacOS / Quartz: Crash when clicking to draw second element

Hi, I try to build current git master (October 3rd, 2017) version on MacOS. I used Macports (+quartz) to install all required libraries and then build with CMake. The build process works and I can install inkscape. I have El Capitan with xcode 7.3. inkscape also opens. When I click the pen tool I can draw a first line. Clicking in the draw window to start the next line will crash inkscape. The same happens when I try to draw a second elipse. I traced it with the debugger and the problem is that the current selection is cleared. After a work in three main phases over >2years: - merge 9b7af8caac08ad42a48214518bc004e258eb5873 (+1544,-1778 over 114 files) taking care of just the uses pertaining to the selections, - merge 50ab3a3c4215474d437f9adcc4b725bed26767d7 (+701,-884 over 60 files) taking care of many various uses, - tonight's merge of https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/merge_requests/86/diffs (+1041,-1612 over 90 files) taking care of the rest, I'm pleased to announce that the number of GList and GSList in the codebase is at an historical low: → GLists are still in heavy uses in libcroco and libnrtype forcing two uses in sp-style-elem.cpp (libcroco) and widgets/font-selector.cpp (libnrtype) → Three files related to actions in src/widgets/ crash when gtkmmified so they still keep GSList in "proxies = gtk_action_get_proxies( GTK_ACTION(action) );". The normal way to get rid of those would be to make a big effort of gtkkmification of the actions and make them derive from Gio::Action <https://developer.gnome.org/glibmm/unstable/classGio_1_1Action.html>. I'm not sure how to achieve that. Many of these lists were not properly g_(s)list_free'd, so I may or may not have fixed several dozens of memory leaks in the process. Hi everybody, Recently i start to have a lot of work with a big variety of sizes, for evrything materials, but this is not the heavy work the mostly is be adding an image as background and bleed, this is necesary after the print proccess to give a good finished to art. At the end you have to cut this bleed to have the real size, for example: A letter size art with the bleed could has 8.75 x 11.25 inches after the cut have to be exactly 8.5 x 11 inch. Have you ever considered add this necesary option? i know that people can export to png and choose if you want to export the page or the total image, with the total image you can solve the problem because de background is bigger than the area but png is nos a good format for offset print process, so after export the png you have to do other steps for this art works in offset printers. For what it's worth I also prefer a px-based default template. * For digital art it makes the most sense as Tyler noted. * For stuff that's intended to be used "on paper" it does not break anything and can in fact even avoid incompatibilities due to the viewbox scaling. Also it feels more natural to make a line 1or 2 px wide (which are useful widths for me in everyday use) instead of fiddling with fractional millimeters. If I need mm-based sizes I can also still use them where necessary. On a related note I'm not even sure our default size of A4 is overly useful. I've yet to create content in Inkscape that would need an A4 size... For me it's either digital artwork which has some even pixel size or I'm creating graphics that are put on A4 paper and therefore need to be smaller anyway (e.g. ~ 8cm wide to fill one column). So, while we need some default (which might just as well be A4) I don't think we should assume users actually create A4 content and base our decision on that. Hi. Im using style dialog, and couldent change inline atributes and inside SVG style defined css selectors. First one only allow delete atributes and second one only alow add atribute but couldent add value. Im in Inkscape 0.92+devel (a113f4663e, 2017-09-05). Im thinking on move part of the "Meassure Segment" code to be handled by CSS Style Dialog. All the best, Jabier.

Greetings all, A universal default.svg with units px and scale=1 provides a simple single solution to a number of issues: - Resolves broken extensions and features like symbols and outset/inset, etc. - No need for users to consider scale, they just set the display units and work. - No need to tailor localizations with in/96, mm/3.77953. - Fewer bug reports for scale and localization issues. - Neophytes are less likely to abandon Inkscape as confusing or complicated. That's a lot of benefit, for what could be relatively little effort. Like with any graphics or CAD application, users should be familiar with setting document units when starting to work. This is the most basic of best-practices. Even making a template is not difficult, but a button/tool to save the current document as a template would be very handy. Regards, TD

Oh, well if that's the only reason, I would suggest going back to px for the native user units! It looks to this non-tech-oriented user like using mm for the native units is making these things much more complicated (not to mention confusing) than they really need to be. Is there any reason why I can't make a feature request in LP, to revert to px? Like is there some other reason for the change, or we're already planning to revert, or ??? I know it might or might not happen. But really, just to make the default doc match one single template -- this really is imposing a great deal of confusion for many users! Vlada, good to hear from you again. It's very unfortunate I didn't do more to get my vectorized blur code merged especially when it was 99% done. It was reviewed and the main complaint was it didn't compile for i686. That could've been done easily, but there was another problem I realized which was how to handle vector remainders without reading past the end of an array, which could cause a crash (but with low probability). Hi everyone, I was just wondering if this is interesting for Inkscape project on Windows platform. The aim of WinGUp is to provide a ready to use and configurable updater which downloads a update package then installs it. By using cURL library and TinyXml module, GUP is capable to deal with http protocol and process XML data. Originally WinGUp was made for the need of Notepad++ (a generic source code editor under MS Windows). During its conception, the idea came up in my mind : if it can fit Notepad++, it can fit for any Windows program. So here it is, with LGPL license to have no (almost not) restriction for integration in any project. Being LGPLed, WinGUp can be integrated in both commercial (or close source) and open source project. So if you run a commercial or open a source project under MS Windows and you release your program at regular intervals, then you may need WinGUp to notice your users the new update." I find it very convenient to be able to update notepad++ by clickinh on "?" > "Update Notepad++". Sorry for the delay. I think I'm getting it :-) Now, more or less understanding "user units", I'm back at #3 of your first reply. pressure sensitivity for Pencil tool using powerstroke?

Hi Friends, Someone has recently posted on a forum, asking for a tool which combines pressure sensitivity of Calligraphy, freehand, powerstroke, and simplify, all in one tool. I explained we have something pretty close to that with Pencil, Triangle In/Out, with Simplify option. But it made me start to wonder. The Calligraphy tool must have been chosen for pressure sensitivity, at least in part because it can achieve variable width. Well now that we have powerstroke, I wonder if it would it be possible to give pressure sensitivity to the Pencil tool, using powerstroke? Probably a wild thought. But can't hurt to ask. Just asking if that, or something like it would be possible. Thanks, brynn

Mailing List logs

Dear Developers, Since 11th July sourceforge has changed the way they're giving us access to our mailing list log. It used to contain the full email mbox for all the messages sent to the system. Now they are giving us smaller, stripped mbox files that aren't as complete. I believe all messages are there, but headers are modified and email addresses are changed to bryce@...3609... etc. We've been collecting our mailing list records ever since we started planning moving our mailing lists away from sourceforce. When it comes to do the import into the new mailman, I'm going to try and retain as much of the old messages as possible and then add on the stripped messages since then, but it would be nice to have the full log. If anyone has a complete record of inkscape messages, please let me know. (also double cool if we have pre-sourceforce records, but no worries if they're lost to time) Best Regards, Martin Owens

Thanks, Maren. I will try to find some time to read those. But I was really hoping for a shorter answer. It's not that I mind learning new things. But if it takes that much reading to understand a program's feature, then I think the feature needs to be redesigned, so that users are eased into it. (Original message posted to User list, but now copying to the devel list) If this would help for developers or advanced users know how to answer, here is the basic question. How to change the display units, so that the file is using those units, and so that the drawing is as close to the real life units as the user's screen resolution permits (like for printing or cutting). Also, an issue was raised in a forum, that symbols and some extensions don't work properly if the scale is not set a certain way. ("don't work properly" means that the resulting sizes aren't correct.) In this case, I mean for a new drawing in the current version of Inkscape (not opening a file which was started in an earlier version). At their most recent meeting, Conservancy’s board approved the proposed changes to the travel policy that were recently submitted to policies-discuss. Let me give a quick recap of those changes so I can discuss next steps for PLCs. First, the new policy provides additional budget to book flights that save substantial time over the cheapest available fare. This was the most common request we heard, and definitely we recognize the value of saving people’s time. In order to keep the rules simple, the budget increases at specific time savings marks. Second, the policy increases the cost of international flights that require preapproval, from $1,500 to $1,650. This change is just to keep pace with fares we’re seeing; the $1,500 limit has been in place since at least 2012, and of course fares have risen since then. This should reduce the number of flights that require preapproval. There are also a couple of changes that just provide additional flexibility in handling reimbursement requests. The new rules clarify that our 90-day limit on reimbursement requests starts from the last day of travel, not the day the expense was incurred. (This is how we’ve treated it since the 90-day rule was introduced, but now it’s official.) Expenses that require preapproval can be approved by any officer of Conservancy, not just the executive director. This should help us be more responsive to your requests. There are also non-rules changes, like updates to the currency rates we use (forced on us because the Bank of Canada stopped providing them) and Markdown formatting.
