Hi Todor. The work on mass tool in eraser is previously done, because the eraser tool get code from caligraphic tool, so I only show mass widget. Anybody is thinking in another widget to show to eraser tool from caligraphic tool? About your concrete question: Is not as easy implement it, maybe the best option to it is add a option to caligraphic tool to only do one direction line instead the current shape, for example with width = 0. buildtool update

Hi all, I just pushed a small fix for buildtool which solves some glitches with matching regular expressions (see [1] for details). Can we disable box-drag zoom while the "zoom out" function is active? I'm used to shift-clicking to zoom out when I don't have a mousewheel, and if Inkscape detects even the slightest movement while the mouse is pressed, it draws a teeny tiny box and tries to zoom in to it. If the user is zooming out this behaviour should be dissabled, because it's a zoom-in function. Alternatively, or additionally: When it zooms into such a small area, Inkscape takes an absolute age to re-draw gradients and my high-res graphics. It might be best to expand the minimum area that the box-zoom can zoom into. Say 10x10 screen px would be reasonable I think. Thoughts? Ah, there it goes. :) I can work again, yay! :D - C

how to update a git repository?

I had previously downloaded the git lib2geom repository using the command: git clone git://git.launchpad.net/lib2geom Now I saw that there was a recent commit yesterday, so I decided to update. I ran the command : git pull git://git.launchpad.net/lib2geom and got the response: >From git://git.launchpad.net/lib2geom * branch HEAD -> FETCH_HEAD Already up-to-date. However, I know that my copy is not uptodate, despite what the message says. Any ideas as to how to do a pull? Also, is there any way of knowing which rev my local repository is currently on? Something equivalent to 'bzr revno' or 'bzr version-info'? I have tried 'git log', but unfortunately it generates an infinite loop from which I cannot escape, so it is not very helpful. I have tried about a dozen varieties of the command 'git log <revision range>' but none of them work. The git help files, unfortunately, are no help because they do not contain any working examples. Also, will I need to implement a SSH key to make changes? Code changes related to a scale factor of 1 + 1/15???

Hi all, Does anybody recall a recent change that would have introduced a scale factor of 1.066667 (1 + 1/15), on Windows only? In a simple test case (one black rectangle) read in from an EMF file, for the same trunk revision, among other issues, I am seeing all coordinates and widths scaled up by that amount on windows relative to linux. They say: * 1 in every 500 downloads results in a donation (0.2%) * People donate what your default is normally * There are lots of complaints about the download format * They plan on changing the download screen to a thank you page This is important data for us, because I feel the good will of our users is important for us and noting to large amount of complaints is important for the design. btool slower to link with recent devlibs on Windows (32 bit)

Hi all, Finally had a chance to update things on my Windows XP 32 bit build box. Devlibs 53 -> 61 and now current inkscape trunk. I'm observing that the link stage is taking a very, very, Very long time to complete. Many minutes. I do not recall it taking that long previously. Am I hallucinating or is it really slower than it used to be? Is there an easy way to disable the build for inkview, so that I can at least not have to wait for that progam's equally slow link? Also I have forgotten the trick to get btool to show what it is doing when it compiles a module. Since I want to supply a patch for embroidery use based on 0.91 soon, I implemented it based on the old livarot mechanisms, but the new bool ops are just 200 lines with quite a few comments, so I don't see much of an issue to port it later. The main work was anyway thinking about how to do it so that it works reliably and not implementing it. The filltype parameters I will remove and get them from the paths instead. I think these bool-ops are quite useful for normal drawing (not embroidery) as well as a more generic kind of hatching. Best regards, Michael

Quality of gradients.

A few weeks ago, Tavmjong added a comment to bug #180693, asking if the reported issue was still present with the new renderer. I'm answering here, as I'm adding some personal comments that probably don't belong to the bug report. Please tell me if it's is worth that I add some of this information to the bug report, or feel free to do it if anyone wants to. Regarding the question, As long as Inkscape renders at 8bpc, yes. It will still be a problem. It's possible that some sizes and colors hide the problem more than others, but banding will still be a problem unless images are rendered in higher precision. The easiest way to check this is to draw a grayscale gradient. At 8bpc, you can't paint more than 256 shades of gray. So a 256px-wide gradient will look ok, but as soon as you stretched that gradient to a larger size, banding will appear. An even more extreme example (but not less frequent) is when you also have a grayscale gradient, but instead of going from black to white you go from a middle gray to a lighter gray. If your gradient takes, say 50 levels out of those 256, stretching the gradient will result in severe banding sooner. I don't think it's possible to address banding in 8bpc without some form of dithering, and it looks that the current renderer doesn't apply any. As I mentioned in an older comment, the best way I could find to work around this was using the "spread" filter in GIMP, which jitters the edges of each step of the gradient making it look smoother. There are existing dithering algorithms that could be used too, like floyd-steinberg, bayer, a-diher (http://pippin.gimp.org/a_dither/), etc. but I wonder how effective would they be as we don't have a smooth gradient as a starting point, but a stepped one. Those dithering algos could be useful if inkscape rendered at 16bpc, to bring down the display to 8bpc though. At any rate, rasterizing a vector shape and applying a filter would be prohibitively slow for large sizes so this dithering, if applied, should be probably applied only to export, making this solution unsuitable for on-screen representation. Anyway, I don't think banding is too much of a problem (it is, but it's not as severe) for screen as it is for printing. For printing it becomes a critical issue, as other commenters pointed out. Inkscape is a valuable tool for large format printing which I use daily, and time to time I have to apply some nasty workarounds because of this limitation. For my professional work, the way inkscape renders gradients is a show- stopper. The quality of my work suffers if I don't apply one of those tedious workarounds discussed in this thread. This bug has been reported about 8 years ago, and a lot happened since. Maybe this time, with a new renderer there's something that can be done to get it fixed? Gez

Win64 devlibs update

Current status: Both trunk and 0.91 build fine and seem to work without obvious flaws on my system! Most of the binaries are contributed by Partha Bagchi whom I'd like to thank very much again! Almost all dependencies were updated to the latest available version and rebuilt from scratch with gcc 5.3. Although work is not yet finished I'm at a point were I'd like to encourage you to test my changes: * If you want to compile Inscape from scratch you can do that as usual [1]. Wrote a Boolean LPE - How to make operand path invisible?

Dear Inkscape Developers, I just wrote a Boolean OP LPE. It was quite easy using sp_pathvector_boolop. It works well, just I can't figure out how to make the operand path, which comes in via a OriginalPathParam, invisible. Also I have one design question: Some operations are symmetric, others not. Currently my interface has a bool_op enum and a swap operands bool parameter. I wonder if it would make more sense to combine these into one like: uninion intersection this minus operand operand minus this ... I think this would be easier to use, but it would break consistency with the existing bool op menu operations. Best regards, Michael

So what we have here is a psd of a single page that flows downwards. I expect it to assume a standard set of css frameworks such as bootstrap or similar. I also know that Hinerangi has some designs waiting in the wings for the website and that we've stalled on moving more improvements in. I'm interested in hearing wider feedback from the community since I've been under the impression that the website's design has been fairly serviceable. A replacement would be a fair amount of work and at the moment I'm only committed to making sure the technical integration of any proposed design goes ahead without any barriers. ReadTheDocs

ReadTheDocs is a site that can build documentation and serve it online after every commit to a repository. We used to have something similar, but it ceased to work at some point. It looks like it's fairly simple to mate Doxygen with ReadTheDocs (which uses the Sphinx documentation system) using a project called Breathe. http://breathe.readthedocs.org/en/latest/ I'll try to set this up for lib2geom tomorrow and report on the results. Website design

Martin, It may have gotten some approval nods, but mine certainly isn't one of them. Responsive design is nice and all to have and something that needs to be addressed if it hasn't been done already, but this design doesn't cut it. I would also refrain from completely overhauling the current design aspects (colour, type) which are not bad at all. What I see here is a two or possibly 4 column collapsable design that has a splash screen with a download button and some icons on the bottom. All readable info would be off screen in case of a small factor screen. What's the point of that? There is no Android or iOS version of Inkscape, so that would be besides the point wouldn't it? You would only want to be able to read some info rather than the download button. Nor does it strike me as good practice to lard your entry page for smart phones with sizable bitmaps. In my view it just doesn't appeal, both from UI, UX and design point of view. Back to the drawingboard I'd say and give it some thought this time. The website design as it is has room for improvement from a marketing point of view, but in general is quite functional and to the point. Nor am I a great fan of the scrollmania that is so popular these days as a reflection of small factor readers. Single page view designs are still preferable to the hot swipe that goes around as fashionable and hip. Yes to responisive design, but why not make the current design responsive and not just by tossing it into bootstrap. Dear Claus Staedtler, Thank you for emailing me :-) I think it's a good idea to harmonise where possible. Inkscape's icons are a mix between our icon packs (a tango theme and a symbolic mono-color) none of our themes have text alignment icons (only object alignment icons). In order to use the proposed icons they would have to be installed into the system's icon theme. What is the status of gimp and libreoffice regarding using system icons? Hi Hinerangi, Thanks so much for posting a screenshot of your design, I like it very much. What I like about your design is: * The colour theme, I've grown to like the white an black clean lines * The non-scrolling, single page, makes it easier to do information pages using the same * The news and other information is closer to the top. What I like about eshill's design is: * The four horizontal images for each of the sections * The cleaner download button, separate and large for the first page. * The icons for the information sections (news, users etc) But getting a responsive design would be really nice IMO. Rotation tool

Hi any one could tell me if a SVG tag could contain a transform inside? I try it on 0.91+devel, the elements are transformed but the controls of items and the rubberband is not transformed. To get more on the idea to know if could be done, the tool is a rotation tool that rotate the draw from the cursor betweeen 360 degrees. There is also a angle constrain modiffier and a reset button. Basicaly need to know if is svg compilant the transform on svg tag. And if yes, how rotation and other trannsforms -only for info- affect to the viewbox? I see that the SVG 2 spec contains a new property called miter-clip. https://svgwg.org/svg2-draft/painting.html#LineJoin Just wondering whether Inkscape, or any other renderers, are going to implement this, or have already implemented it? I ran into this by accident when trying to produce an svg representation of some spirograph bitmaps. The original spirographs came from https://sourceforge.net/projects/spirograph/ , I have attached a png screenshot of one here. The corresponding svg file that I produced is attached here as well. Hey GR, OK so I fixed the graphics on the site, this was the difference between the two logos: * The inkscape logo was fatter (so preserve aspect ratio) * The white mark towards the lower middle was missing There was also some unintentional errors, with the black blobs not having a background white line. But Josh has said that the white lines and the grey colour are fine, as it the flat design. New Donate Link Graphics

Dear all, Thanks to Golden Ribbon (inkscape user and maker of recently good tutorials) he's provided to us some graphics for encouraging more donations through affiliate links. They look really nice too. I've just finished adding them to the English page on the website. If you go to https://inkscape.org/en/support-us/donate/ you will see the new images and the copy-paste html if you want to add a link to your own website to support inkscape. Golden Ribbon is also interested in making t-shirts and other mechanise; we don't yet have anyone (I know of) who is skilled or interested in looking into merchandise, but maybe if we had some nice designs someone would step forwards to add this feature. Inkscape, Pango, Language Tags and Marshallese

Hello all. It is well-known that Inkscape uses Pango for text rendering. What I have found is that it doesn't yet support language tags for locale-specific rendering of glyphs. The context for this is a font I'm now developing that has separate glyphs for the Marshallese language <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marshallese_language>. It has five problematic letters – L, M, N, O with cedilla and N with macron; in particular M-cedilla, O-cedilla and N-macron aren't even in Unicode yet and while the other two characters are in, they usually display commas for Latvian, which is considered unacceptable for Marshallese. My font has the proper glyphs. SVG is a kind of XML and so the xml:lang attribute can be used to set the language of a certain piece of text. For example, if you wanted to say that some text is Polish you would put xml:lang="pl" as an attribute of the text (not tspan) object that contains the Polish text. These are ISO 639 two-letter codes that are used here, so for Marshallese the letters mh would be used. To ensure that the proper glyphs are displayed for the language in question, OpenType has the localised forms feature, which substitutes one glyph for another if the text is in a particular language. For my case, my font substitutes the replacements used by the online Marshallese–English dictionary (see here <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marshallese_language#Display_issues> for the replacements) with the typographically correct glyphs. So far, so good. But then I concocted an SVG demo with two sets of the replacement characters, one of which had xml:lang="mh" so it would display correctly in Marshallese. It worked fine in my browser, but the language tag was ignored when I opened it in Inkscape (see the attachment). I am not in a hurry over this, but I would appreciate it if someone could add support for the as-yet-unsupported OpenType features to Inkscape. How does font size work?

Hi, in IRC there was a discussion about the font size setting and I have to admit that I don't understand it. The tooltip says the value is in pt, which (according to the CSS specs) is 1/72th of an inch. Inkscape now uses a DPI of 96 to convert to/from pixels. When I type some text in 72 pt and then select the object the control bar tells me it's size was 6.72 mm, which would be 0.264566929134 inch [0] and that is 25.4 pixel [1], which is what I can see in the XML being stored. The part I don't understand is how that value relates to the initial 72 pt? And is it a coincidence that the final result of 25.4 is the conversion factor inch/mm? Some clarification or links to documentation would be appreciated. Tobias PS: Would it be possible to fix the font size box to show "nice" values and not some rounded numbers? Maybe just storing the pt value typed by the user along the converted px value and showing that? Or doing it the right way and putting the pt verbatim into the SVG as it used to be done? Dear Users and Developers, I've put together an integrated tutorial for the irc chat on inkscape.org and I'd like a few users and support contributors to give it a review: https://inkscape.org/en/*users/chat/ You should see a few things are different now: * You must be logged in to use the chat, previously you could be anonymous. You even must have an email configured, so facebook and twitter logins must update their user profile before chatting. * There is the above guide which add the can_irc permission to a user's account. Confirming they've seen every page (I shorted it to 4 pages). * There's a new IRC bot that offers these new commands: - webbot: whois [username] ; will tell you who a user is and a link to their website profile, in case someone joins the chat asks a question and then leaves without waiting. - webbot: tell [username] [msg] ; will send an alert to the user with a possible response. The default for website message alerts is to email them too. So you can respond to someone who just left. - Get Latest Art ; a bit of fun to return the latest item in the Artwork category on the live site. Returns the link. - If you want further integrations between irc and the website, this is now possible. (maybe good for meetings in the future) I'm hoping these tools will allow users to feel comfortable chatting with us and also provision support contributors with what they need when in chat. Hi, On a Ubuntu box just did: bzr update make it ran through configure (with no obvious problems) and began compiling but failed with: make[3]: *** No rule to make target `2geom/viewbox.cpp', needed by `2geom/viewbox.o'. Stop. The file 2geom/viewbox.o is still there from the last build a month ago. There is no viewbox.cpp in the 2geom directory. Just me? How to unjam this? Feedback needed: Fallback for 'arc's line join.

Hi, The currently specified fallback for the 'arcs' line join is a 'miter' join. It has be noted that this is not a very good fallback. I've implemented three different alternative fallback strategies in trunk as part of the 'Join Type' LPE in trunk. The SVG WG has agreed to change the fallback to one of these depending on user input. Here is your chance to help influence the SVG 2 specification! For a quick introduction, see: http://tavmjong.free.fr/SVG/LINEJOIN_STUDY/#arcs To test: 1. Create a path with a number of corner nodes. 2. Open the LPE dialog (Path->Path Effects, CTRL-SHIFT-7) 3. Click on the '+' button, select 'Join Type', and click the 'Add' button. 4. Increase the 'Line width' to some number (~20 to ~100) 5. Select the various "Extrapolated arc" 'Join' types. 6. Move the handles around and observe the line join shape. Note: There are a number of bugs, for example, setting the Miter limit doesn't always work. https://travis-ci.org/tweenk/inkscape/builds/109310104 The build takes 15 minutes with Clang and 21 minutes with GCC, so we have considerable headroom (the limit for OSS projects is 50 minutes). Create releases more regularly

Hi there, I initially asked at inkscapeforum.com<http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=15755&p=63224>and was told to better post my request to this mailing list. I wonder if it wouldn't be possible to create releases more regularly. Currently there are many months or even years between each release of Inkscape. Bug fixes should get out more quickly and it should be possible to try out new features of upcoming versions. Most users don't have the possibility to build Inkscape by their own, so they have to wait for the next release. Unfortunately the provided development downloads are not synchronized, hosted on different third-party web sites and out of date (currently especially the Windows version). So I suggest to create a (more or less) fixed fast release cycle for normal releases (e.g. every two or three months) and periodically (e.g. every one or two weeks) create alpha versions. Alpha versions should be built (maybe even automatically) for all supported OSes and hosted directly on inkscape.org. Sebastian

Hi, I'm using inkscape on making figures for submission. It's a amazing software. Jus one point I'm wondering. I'm using Origin8.5 for making scientific graphing and succeeded in inserting graph into inkscape layout by "Copy page" option of Origin. Previously I used powerpoint to do this but it turns out ppt file can not fulfill the resolution requirement of publication(> 300dpi). One of convenience of powerpoint is, I can re-edit scientific graphs on slide via Origin again by double clicking on graph. But in inkscape, once I pasted graph into layout, I can not do this by orgin. I have to go back to Orgin to edit original graph and paste it again into inkscape layout. So my question is, is it possible to do re-editing thing in inkscape powerpoint? Thanks! In my view, moving to Gitlab would avoid that risk. Gitlabs core feature set is free software. If Gitlab also turns into sourceforge, Inkskape can set up its own Gitlab instance, at least in principle. Based in a comment on original code I could improve the response of the tool. Also want to make numeric inputs for start and end point, thinking add it as a modifier for the knots instead puting them on the toolbar. Hello, In the past several months - closer to a year, actually - I've used Inkscape in a tight production environment almost daily. I have produced hundreds of illustrations for a computer-based technical course. During that period I used Inkscape 0.48.5 and lately switched to test builds and release candidates of 0.91. All of this time I have kept a list of the problems I ran into using Inkscape. Some are plain bugs, some are more complex problems for which I have no idea for a solution. After testing the new version to see whether some of these problems have gone away, I thought I might share this document with you. Before I go on, I just like to say that these are mostly minor points. I am an avid user and promoter of Inkscape even though my workplace has provided me with a legal copy of Adobe Illustrator, which I think is inferior in ease of use. I think Inkscape on the whole is a brilliant piece of software and I'm thankful for all your efforts. But some problem just kept popping up again and again. Website Update: OK

Dear developers, The website is pretty much back to speed. Some help from OSUOSL was vital in understanding so a big thanks to them. What went wrong was a couple of points. The first was the mo file issue where django was trying to open files from the disk hundreds of times per request (and failing). Provisioning it with the files stopped that. Then there was the caching. I installed memcached on the server and enabled it's use. This cut down on the amount of memory because wsgi processes are able to share the same cache and reduced mysql load because we didn't have to cache things there any more. I put the number of parallel requests back up to 4, since 2 doesn't really help with all requests and created some backlog. Please continue to test. You will notice gallery pages, user pages are slower than cms pages and this is mostly because those apps don't use cache (something to look into for the next version). Sorry for the disruption. Win32 devlibs update and Windows XP support

Hi all, Work on a new win32 devlibs branch is currently in progress (see https://code.launchpad.net/~jazzynico/inkscape-devlibs/trunk). It's goal is to replace our old devlibs with the most recent ones, compiled with TDM-GCC-5.1. It's almost done, but there are some issues that will affect our win32 devlibs in a near future: * Harfbuzz can't compile on Windows XP (but runs fine). Vista or 7 can be used instead (I'm going to test with a virtualboxed 7). Of course, Harfbuzz is required by lots of other libs (pango, rsvg, imagemagick, gtk...). * Glib doesn't compile on Windows XP and 7, due to recent changes in Glib-2.43. So we're stuck with 2.42.2. Side effect, we can't compile the latest glibmm and atkmm libs (and maybe others, I haven't try Gtk and Gtkmm yet...). I don't know if it's directly related, but there's an old thread in the gnome mailing list that question Windows XP support (see https://mail.gnome.org/archives/gtk-devel-list/2014-December/msg00055.html). Note that Gnome no longer provides binaries for XP on their download page (http://www.gtk.org/download/windows.php). So be aware that maintaining Windows XP (and even win32) versions is going to be harder and harder... I'm going work on the branch until it's done (or blocked), but I'm seriously considering switching to my old cross-compiled branch, which was far easier to maintain. Regards, -- Nicolas

Hi all, I would like Inkscape to start shipping an AppData file for the GNOME and KDE software centers. At the moment it's invisible to AppStream-enabled software managers as there is no metadata file to read. I've uploaded a file here http://people.freedesktop.org/~hughsient/temp/inkscape.appdata.xml which needs to be committed and then installed into the $prefix/share/appdata directory at install time; there's no need to conditionalize this as it's just ignored by any distro without an app installer. If you want to mark it translatable that would be great too, although I'm not familiar with what tools inkscape uses (intltool?) and I'm 100% okay if you want to change the description or add/change any extra screenshots. I'd like to make Inkscape a featured application in GNOME Software for 3.20 and an upstream AppData file is a prerequisite to that. I first wrote a mail to this mailing list in 2013 when we started the AppStream project, but since that time over 1200 other applications have started shipping metadata files for the software center. This very much makes Inkscape the odd-one-out now, and now we're building nightly snapshots of inkscape as part of the xdg-app nightly repo we can't even include an additional file in the srpm like so many distros are doing. Google Summer of Code (GSoC) 2016 - Call for mentors & help with ideas page

Hey all, As you all know, we were not accepted as a mentoring organization for GSoC 2015. Part of the reason for this is that they have been getting more mentoring org submissions each year and really started to get tighter with enforcing existing guidelines that they had. Essentially, our ideas page was the big problem as we didn't follow their guidelines at http://en.flossmanuals.net/GSoCMentoring/making-your-ideas-page/ They specifically said "Each idea should have potential mentors, difficulty level, expected skills, etc. and none of those are listed on your ideas page." For people's reference the ideas section of our GSoC page is at http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Google_Summer_of_Code#Suggested_Ide… The application period is still a about a month out, but one of the things we do need to get on sooner rather than later is getting people to volunteer to mentor so we can get the ideas section right by the time we actually apply. We also need to gauge how many interested devs we might have for mentoring this year so if you're interested, please reply saying so. I think we might want to entertain having a separate "dormant ideas" page where we have a pool of all the ideas possible. We then only move them to the active ideas section that currently exists when they have mentor, difficulty, and necessary skills assigned. Cheers, Josh

Hi Maren, Thanks for the info. Oh, I didn't know about the change in plans for HF (since I'm not subbed to the Board list, of course). I'll hold off on making new posts, until there is some new/confirmed info. And may as well wait on new news item too. If there now may be a charge for a new venue, maybe donation button would be more needed? Or maybe that will not be very significant? I'm just not very knowledgeable about that kind of things. Even though donations may not be "needed" at the moment, HF still might represent a good opportunity to pick up donations for a time in the future when donations are more scarce. Or maybe more donations would simply allow more people to attend? If I recall the old donation page, money went into the Fund, so maybe could be used for other things, as well. Website Upgrade Status: Springtime

Dear Developers, board and lurking users, The live website has just been transitioned. Maren and I have been testing and fixing the next version of the site over on staging for the past two weeks; so I firstly want to offer my profound thanks to Maren for the timely help with bug reports to clean up many rough edges. With the testing, this doesn't mean we have clean up everything, so don't worry if you see something odd or an error. Report odd things to me or the inkscape-web bug tracker, errors get emailed to me directly so don't worry too much about them. Now onto features. * The gallery app has had a lot of work done on it. Some things got patched into live before, but the vast majority of improvements are now there. Mainly the index page that allows one to browse: https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/ * There is an alerts system now. You can subscribe to pages so you can get an email when they're edited, to users so you get a message when they upload new art and you may also get a message if someone clicks the send message link in your profile. Allows other users to message people without email addresses being exposed. * The teams app has been massively improved, although not completed as the end goal is mailing list integration. You can see the three public teams here: https://inkscape.org/en/teams/ * There is a new releases app which replaces the cms downloads pages. It's being filled in slowly, if you can help write up and link up all the downloads, please get in touch. Notification popup on inapplicable command

One aspect of Inkscape that is confusing is that it is possible to issue commands that have no effect because they are inapplicable, e.g. requesting to unlink a clone, on an object that is not a clone. Where such inapplicable commands are given with the keyboard, there is no notification that the command did nothing, and when no visual change would have occurred even when it did succeed, the results can be especially confusing. Ideally, all menu items and toolbar buttons would be dynamic, i.e. disabled when inapplicable, but I'm thinking that it would also make sense to show a floating notification bar that notifies the user that the command failed because it did not apply, e.g. "Object is not a clone". ---------------------------------------------- This e-mail was sent from my Desktop Computer®

Hi all, The win32 devlibs have just been updated (rev. 54) to fix the following reports: - Bug #1530286 "Inkscape fails to build on Window with GC errors", - Bug #1156664 "Compile against external libpotrace". Differences in union result between commandline and the GUI?

Hello. getting familiarized with using inkscape from the commandline in preparation for developing some automation and connectors in nodejs. Running some simple examples, I noticed that there seem to be some differences between the output created by the commandline and what the UI create (on the exact same input assets). I've attached a photo here noting the most obvious differences I've observed I'm wondering if anyone might be able to shed some light on the why i might be seeing these differences and whether there is a way to address them do that the output from the commandline is faithful to the both the original and the version created by the union operation in the UI. The path union operation from the UI is flawless, but not so from the command line so this was a very unexpected result. Are these types of deviations common, or perhaps is this something that can be addressed with different settings/arguments. for reference, where command used: ./inkscape --file 'c:\users\user\dog.svg' --select 'top' --verb 'SelectionUnion' --export-plain-svg='c:\users\user\dog-plain.svg' Run from a poweshell session on windows 8.1 with Inkscape 0.91 r13725 (Jan 30 2015) The original (path, not text) [image: Inline image 2] A Comparison of the two Otherwise this seems to be a bug. Specifying color fonts

Hi, Is there currently in Inkscape a way to specify exact fonts, like specific font files? If I understand right, would this mean support of "user fonts" as specified by CSS3 Fonts? I've been working on using color fonts made from font layers (where each color layer is a different font file), but the layer fonts I can find all specify family names and styles in such a way that it seems impossible to specify them in Inkscape. Inkscape 0.92 and Converting Inkscape to CMake

CMake is a key goal for the Inkscape 0.92 release. We're close, but some important work still remains. Are you familiar with CMake? It's important not only that we convert the codebase, but that we also install our developers (i.e. YOU!!) with adequate cmake know-how to be able to update stuff as needs arise. Is CMake something you've not yet learned? I've written up a little Inkscape-specific tutorial / class to give you the basics. Thanks for lending a hand to helping with the CMake work. My dream is that by achieving this conversion, we'll be able to unify a lot of our platform-specific packaging. Unfortunately there is no exact support for radial gradients in the EMF or EMF+ standards. Currently Inkscape emulates such gradients in EMF files with many small single colored elliptical slices. The best one could do with EMF would be to use the peculiar "triangle" gradient mode (Google "GRADIENT_FILL_TRIANGLE") to emulate a radial gradient. Then instead of rings it would be a lot of small wedges, each with its own part of the gradient. At the moment there is no code in Inkscape to do this. (EMF+, which is not yet supported at all in inkscape but is coded into libUEMF, has something called a "Path Gradient Brush" which is essentially a bunch of these triangle gradients merged, so that instead of specifying a lot of triangles, one specifies a center point and a path.) Going this route would be a one way trip, since the code for working back from multiple triangle gradients to a radial one would need to be pretty clever to look for and detect this sort of clustering and arrangement of gradients, especially since those EMF records need not be consecutive in the file. (Going from EMF+'s Path Gradient Brush to an SVG radial gradient would be easier because it would not have the multiple record problem.) Also an awful lot of these triangles might be needed to get a smooth looking radial gradient, that is, one that doesn't look like a set of nested polygons resulting from "contour lines" of constant colors. Perhaps slightly varying the angle in each slice would hide that effect a bit? Licensing issues with Scour (aka 'Optimized SVG' output)

Hi all, I'm posting here today hoping that we can finally resolve some licensing issues which recently emerged regarding the Scour extension for Inkscape (also know as 'Optimized SVG' output). I'll try to summarize the issue as good as possible so everybody is up to speed: * Right now we bundle an old version of Scour that is dual-licensed with Apache 2.0 license and GPLv2+. This dual licensing was only introduced in a very recent commit [1] when the original author Jeff Schiller agreed to re-license his code under the terms of GPLv2+ after license issues in Inkscape were brought up in a previous discussion [2]. However at this point there were multiple contributions to the Scour codebase by other authors who did not accept to re-license their contributions. This is why the re-licensing is likely to be void and the the current maintainer of Scour (Tobias Oberstein) decided not to apply the dual-licensing when switching over to GitHub with the project [3]. * I recently updated the Scour extension for Inkscape and want to merge these changes [4]. Obviously I followed Tobias Obersteins decision not to apply the dual-licensing, so the new version only has the Apache 2.0 License. * The open question now is: Can we bundle the Scour code with Inkscape and how to we do it? In my opinion this should not be a problem since Scour is an external module that is *indepentent* from Inkscape, e.g. license incompatibilities do not play a role here which is also the opinion of Tobias Oberstein (see [5] for details and references). Also most project members seem to agree (see comments in the merge request [4]) However If we don't want to follow this reasoning we have to decide on alternatives (especially since the code currently in trunk might well have an invalid license). I hope we can once and for all resolve this issue! Okay, so there was not enough interest in doing the interview montage, so I'm back-burnering that one. :) So instead, let's show them what's new in Inkscape! I am doing a brief video commercial for the Inkscape project with updates from the last year. So what are you favourite Inkscape features/progress. This will replace the "two slides" at LGM, with something much more swish and polished to show off the hard work that's been done in Inkscape over the last year (starting from or around April last year). What I need: A list of your favourite new features in Inkscape (developed in the last year, or that will be finished and/or working by the date of LGM in April). Path Count Restriction in Division, Cut and Difference

I've committed a change to splivarot.cpp to remove the restriction which stopped our difference/cut/division functions from working on multiple paths. I was reading the forum post at http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=20762 and it didn't seem to make much sense, so I did a few tests which I've posted here: https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/item/7216/ You can see we do the most sensible things already and the new functionality enabled by the commit doesn't seem to make a /lot/ of sense as far as I can see, but then I'd like to not artificially restrict the function because someone might find it interesting. The other hand is that there might be a more common sense way of doing the functions. Maybe by making a union first, or some other thing. But we'd first have to see examples on what users think they'll get when they run these operations on their multiple paths. Best Regards, Martin Owens

I'm working on some proposals for talks this weekend. These are things I can talk about as a graphic designer who works with opensource software as a primary toolset. Inkscape will be featured in several of these talks, but I also desire to help the Inkscape Project with any materials and ideas for talks. What I'd like is to have (for the Inkscape Project) is a series of short videos where our current contributors to the project talk about what motivates them to contribute to Libre software. I will then compile these into a video (5-10 minute) video about Inkscape to present at LGM. This is a way for some of us who can not make it to London to talk about their role in Inkscape as a developer and/or professional user. To make it easy for the camera-shy among us, I'd suggest we do it in a format that resembles this mini commercial I did recently for a small Italian Restaurant: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmPQ8FjRqr8 Something to notice is that the question comes up as text in the video rather than having a presenter ask questions, which makes it easy to ask and answer the questions as a regular conversation, rather than just an interview. Notice at no time did Carlo (who is tremendously camera-shy) have to look at the camera. He was always looking at me (off camera), and just answering my questions while ignoring the camera entirely. In this way I'm able to mix in relevant graphics, and cover mistakes or pauses to produce a professional quality edit with key points of interest. I will provide all editing, compositing, music, captioning (in the case where translation is needed). All materials will be provided in open formats as well for your tinkering pleasure. Extension to export objects or layers to individual files: looking for testers/feedback

Motivated by a request here on the mailing list wrt support for preparing animation frames from within Inkscape based on paths generated with Inkscape's 'Interpolate' extension, I began working on an extension to export a group of paths, or a selection of objects, to individual SVG files in November last year. Recent testing and feedback by Jabiertxo Arraiza Cenoz (thanks a lot!) introduced more features: export of layers or sublayers to individual files, additional export file formats (PNG, GIF) and optional creation of an animated GIF image of all exported objects (for bitmap-based export formats only). It also introduced a dependency on 'convert' from ImageMagick for the additional file formats. Colour Mixing

Dear Ink-devels, My friend has just complained that Inkscape doesn't have colour mixing. He's the first person to mention this functionality to me and I believe from his description the idea is that the colours can be mixed off canvas, where two color stops are selected and then a slider can move between the two. Questions about EllipticalArc, BezierCurve, and Path

Dear Inkscape-devel, I would like to convert a path that internally stores EllipticalArcs into a path with a bunch of BezierCurves. Is there a method that already does this? One way I think can be used is to convert path to pwd2, and convert back again to pathVector using path_from_piecewise() because internally it only uses Bezier curves, but I am wondering if there is a more direct way to do this. If I have a PathVector structure, and I know all Paths inside are connected to each other, is there an easy way to convert such PathVector into Path? Thank you. Jenkins administration

Hi all, Jenkins, our CI system, has been down for more than a month. It looks like the disk has filled up, and we need to do clean up / the build tasks should clean up after themselves better (I suspect it has to do with storing the results of too many older builds instead of just the current one plus a few recent builds). We need an administrator for Jenkins. Currently, I think only me and Bryce have access, which is not good enough. Who is interested in maintaining the automatic build/testing system? Different sizes when cut and paste between Inkscape Trunk or Stable and FontForge

Hello, Because of hardware problems with my main PC tower I went to my laptop where Inkscape 0.91 stable was installed while I mainly use Trunk usually. I noticed a difference in size in cut and paste from FontForge (the version 2 from Ubuntu 14.04 repositories) between Trunk and Stable 0.91. And I don't know if this is due to changes in units in Inkscape, and intentional or not. Thus I hesitate to fill a bug. However I will fill it if necessary. I ask me also if some settings I changed in my Trunk could cause this change. - if I cut a glyph in FF and paste it in Inkscape Trunk, its size in Inkscape is equivalent to this glyph typed at 750 pts - if I do the same to Inkscape Stable it's equivalent to the same at 800 pts ivan

Dear Inkscape-devel, I would like to fix a simple bug I found in src/helper/geom.cpp::pathv_to_cubicbezier(). The control points are not set correctly: Geom::CubicBezier b(cit->initialPoint(), cit->pointAt(0.3334) + Geom::Point(cubicGap,cubicGap), cit->finalPoint(), cit->finalPoint()); where it should have been: Geom::CubicBezier b(cit->initialPoint(), cit->pointAt(0.3333) + Geom::Point(cubicGap,cubicGap), cit->pointAt(0.6667) + Geom::Point(cubicGap,cubicGap), cit->finalPoint()); or more precisely: Geom::CubicBezier b(cit->initialPoint(), cit->pointAt(1./3.) + Geom::Point(cubicGap,cubicGap), cit->pointAt(2./3.) + Geom::Point(cubicGap,cubicGap), cit->finalPoint()); (The Geom::Point(cubicGap,cubicGap) shouldn’t really be there, but that’s a separate issue I described in another email.) Why does Inkscape automatically convert Cubic Bezier straight line to Line Segment?

Dear Inkscape-devel, I am not sure if this is a design decision, but when I draw a cubic Bezier straight line on canvas, it would always get converted to a linear segment (no tangent node handles) automatically. This seems to happen in other scenarios (specifically in LPE) as well. This causes a little bit of an issue when I work on an LPE that requires having cubic bezier output, even for straight line, to maintain C1 smoothness across path segments. However, this automatic conversion will break my curve continuity, because I don’t have the tangent “node” to define for a linear segment that is connected to a cubic segment. In src/helper/geom, there is a method pathv_to_cubicbezier() that does this conversion, but it’s tricky: the tangent handles are somewhat “hacked” by adding small amount of offset to make the curve actually not perfectly linear. Although visually it maybe ok, but for scenarios that we care about precision, we may want strict linear segment to retain as-is, even though it’s in cubic form. Developing on Mac

Hey Inkscape developers, I’ve spent the last several years both using Inkscape and working with C++, and I’d really like to contribute to the project now that I have some relevant skills. I develop on macs though, and I can’t seem to find any up-to-date instructions on building for mac. Can anyone point me to some current info? Thanks for the help, and thanks for everything you guys do. -Mike

CMake 2Geom

Hi to all. Im starting a proyect and want link 2Geom to the code. Always have problem on compile because 2Geom files includes has a include base like "#include 2geom/point.h" and dont find it correctly. Any one know how to link 2Geom library whithout this problem, I dont want to change source code of 2geom. Connecting 2 paths smoothly in code

Dear Inkscape-devel, I have these two paths (Geom::Path, or two Piecewise<D2<SBasis>> if you want), and I would like to join them smoothly (C1, to be precise), in code. Is there an API provided to achieve this task? What I am trying to achieve is obvious to do using Node Tool by first “Join selected nodes" and then “Make selected nodes symmetric”, but I am not sure how to achieve this in code using Geom::Path easily because it doesn’t have a notion of “node” to manipulate. I can setInitial() or setFinal() or setPoint() manually, but since the feature in already there in the code, although in the parts I do not yet understand (PathManipulator), I figured I should ask.
