One of the changes I introduced at revision 13544 was a modification of scaleChildItemsRec() so that it no longer recurses into groups to apply scaling changes associated with a change of units. This was breaking EMF import of clipped objects. That happened because during the recursion the coordinates of the clipped objects were changed directly, not by a transform. Since the clipping object (in defs) was not similarly scaled this broke the clip. See for instance: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1348417 In the changed version the scaling change is applied as a transform at the group level, and all the coordinates within that group are not directly modified, so the clipping object and clipped objects are still at the same scale and they continue to work together. Since EMF import of clipped objects always works like (pseudocode): <g (clip reference)> clipped objects </g> applying the transform at the group level fixes the problem in that context. I suspect that scaleChildItemsRec() is still going to cause problems for any SVG object other than a group that looks something like (pseudocode): <(not a group) (a clip or mask ref) x=100 y=100 (other stuff) > when the document units are changed because it will change the 100's to something else, and not modify the referenced clipping object. I have not confirmed this though. In any case, would the people who worked on document units please see if my changes at revision 13544 break anything when the document units are changed? Actually I'm going to add a parameter to the call, so that it can work one way (so that it works like it does now) for a call from EMF import, and as it did before when called from elsewhere (only one other place that I know of.) This is a short term hack until the actual problem is sorted. And I think the actual problem is in those parts of Inkscape which fail when the scale is applied to a top group. It is perfectly valid SVG to do: <g (scale to whatever conversion one wants)> (bunch of objects in completely arbitrary units. </g> All transform operations up the stack must be applied to an object. If some part of Inkscape only shows units properly when the top level scale is not present, then it is not correctly applying those transforms. How is it not that part of Inkscape that is broken? Website Upgrade (1.2) Tonight

Dear Develoeprs, The inkscape website (inkscape.org) may be unavailable from 1am UTC (9pm EST) for a period lasting about half an hour. This upgrade will take us from django 1.5 to 1.6.5, django-cms from 1.4.2 to 3.0, haystack from 2.0 to 2.2, Whoosh 2.4 to 2.6 and finally inkscape-web from 1.1 to 1.2. The upgrade process involves a bunch of manual steps to the database and command line and I hope these will be completed shortly after upgrading the code. My thanks to Hachmann, jazzynico, Brynn and others in helping prepare this release. After the upgrade, content will be uploadable to inkscape.org and you may wish to populate your user account with some of your svg files to get the ball rolling. Also available will be the ability to upload Addon tarballs and inkscape release builds (exe files/tarballs etc) which can be used instead of sourceforge or your friendly file dumping service. Please see me directly if you need an increased quota to upload large release files. I'm going to start everyone off with 10MB quota to start gently. The idea for most users is to upload svg files which aren't that big. But we can increase this for different auth groups as needed. Any questions, reply here. Best Regards, Martin Owens

LPE Powerstroke

Hi all, Release is getting closer, and we need to decide what parts of Powerstroke we are going to release. After release, it will be very annoying for users if we change the output of Powerstroke for certain input parameters. So we have to avoid having to do that. Ideas: - remove reflection-based extrapolated miters (my original extrapolation), add the arc extrapolation miter - remove CubicBezierFit and CubicBezierJohan interpolators, add Catmull-Rom interpolator thanks for input. I have committed the change that enables Extrapolated Arc (used to be only available with specialized build) and removes Extrapolated (mirroring) from the UI. The code to deal with the old extrapolation setting still works, for people that use it in their files. I am not sure if we should keep that code around or not. It won't hurt too much for now, but may become a maintenance burden. Gtk+ 3 build bit-rot alert!

Hello All, I thought I'd quickly check how we're doing with the Gtk+ 3 build in Ubuntu Utopic, and was unpleasantly surprised to see that: (a) A tonne more symbols that have been deprecated in Gtk+ 3.10 (principally, GtkAction) (b) We have a few regressions, and have resumed use of some deprecated symbols that we had previously replaced. (e.g., GtkHBox) I have updated bug #1016020 with the latest build log (20k lines caused by deprecation warnings!!) and summarised the failures in the description. Obviously, (a) isn't our fault, but we should try to regain the progress we had made! (b) is more of a concern, since we're actually moving backwards! Ultimately, we should really try to enforce "-Werror=deprecated-declarations" in our dev builds, but clearly we're far away from that goal. Would it be reasonable to target a deprecation-free build for Inkscape 1.0? In the meantime, can I please request that from now on, everyone runs a strict build with both Gtk+ 2 and Gtk+ 3 before merging in any new features, so that we can ensure that we're not introducing any new warnings? Stroke placement

Hi, We discussed variable placement of stroke (e.g. inside/outside/10% inside,90% outside). The key to implementing this is having a good way to offset a path as then one can use existing rendering libraries to draw the stroke (including things like dashes, line-caps). If I can provide a clear (testable) algorithm for how to offset a path, there is a good chance we can get this into SVG 2. The current Inkscape code for offsetting is a bit buggy. I believe lib2geom has better code. Can anybody comment? Thanks, Tav

need advice on faq item re command line

Hi Friends, FAQ #3.8.1 contains some garbled text. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about using Inkscape from the command line.....or much about the command line, in the first place. So I'm not sure exactly how to fix it. The current text is below, for convenience. Or here's the URL: http://inkscape.org/en/learn/faq/#Missing_console_output_issue Fyi, I'll be combining this with item #2.20. Could someone either fix the current text, or offer a short re-write for me? It's the first sentence or 2, which need attention. Or if that info is outdated, I need to know the new info. If anyone wants to see what I'm working on: http://staging.inkscape.org/en/brynns-user-faq Comments welcome. Besides updating and re-organizing, I'm taking out a whole bunch of old useless code! (whole bunch!) It's probably about halfway finished, and then I'll start on the faq for developers. The start menu shortcut points to inkscape.exe which does not write any output to the console. However, if you type inkscape in a command prompt, and the install directory (C:\Program Files (x86)\Inkscape\) is in your path, the command prompt will resolve inkscape.com before inkscape.exe. The file inkscape.com is actually a windows executable, that callsinkscape.exe and attaches it to the console window, therefore displaying stdout and stderr to said console. If you call inkscape.exe from the command prompt, things like exporting or converting to plain SVG do work, they just do not output anything to the console. If you are using an older version of Inkscape, or just wish for historical context, see this mailing list thread."

Alignment in C++ classes

While browsing through header files in experimental I found these sort of things: sp-object.h unsigned int cloned : 1; unsigned int set : 1; unsigned int value : 1; sp-namedview.h unsigned int editable : 1; unsigned int showguides : 1; unsigned int showborder : 1; unsigned int showpageshadow : 1; These look very much like a holdover from C which did not have a boolean type like C does. Is there any viable reason for not simply converting these to boolean? There are other, similar things that I saw as well (sp-namedview.h): unsigned int borderlayer : 2; and I believe this variable is meant to hold an enum type. Should it just be changed to the type of the enum with no alignment or is there a reason to not do that?

The annoying ghost node bezier tool bug

0.91 pre2 not yet 100%

When fooling around with 0.91.pre2, the latest bzr revision 13529 I had some problems with text objects. Sometimes the text object would become invisible. Sometimes as I attempted to modify the text object I would get a crash. there is a difference between Inkscape 0.48.5 and current trunk with respect to this issue. In Inkscape 0.48.5 a change in document units is not undone by ctrl-Z. in 0.48.5: - draw object - change document units - hit ctrl-Z, object disappears but the new units are kept - hit ctrl-Z again, nothing happens in trunk, rev 13534: - draw object (preferably not a rectangle) - change document units - hit ctrl-Z, units revert back to original - hit ctrl-Z again, object disappears Personally I prefer the behavior of Inkscape 0.48.5. It seems to me that ctrl-Z should apply only to visible objects, and document units is not a visible object. One more typographic template proposal

Hello, Here is a draft for a template proposal adapted to Inkscape Typographic Extension used togheterwith SVG filters to alterate typefaces (some tastes of the Cross-Smooth filter are included in the template and accessible by the Filters Editor). I apply one of the filters to the charater visible in the window, then I fill the result with the "Fill bounded areas" tool and Then I do Extensions/Typography/Add Glyph Layer. One of my problems is that I don't know how I could precisely place the text origin to zero in this template. I did it manually (and it gives good results when opening the SVG font in FontForge) but I would do it more exactly. I don't figure how I could do it with the XML Editor. Another problem is that the range of unicode characters useable to type into the "Add Glyph Layer" dialog box isn't very wide (for example accented characters doesn't work... and Iuse french language). Could it be possible to fix that ? But a funny facility in this dialog box is that you can type a lot of characters at one time in this dialog box and then it creates one layer by character ! Hi, I'm sure we've talked about it before but in the context of discussing the new Catmull-Rom path commands[1] yesterday at the SVG Working group meeting we briefly discussed adding a new close path command that would insure smoothness when closing a path. There is significant support for doing so. Can somebody whip up a quick proposal that I can present to the group? (SVG with a couple of figures would be good.) So in asking about how to handle this kind of documentation, I'm asking how to avoid losing helpful info. Or maybe in this case, the wiki info is outdated? I'm not very familiar with LaTeX. all the various sources I have used for inkscape0.91 blow up at the same point, on a file called threads.h So in desperation I copied this file from Ubuntu to Slackware. The location is exactly the same on both systems: /usr/include.2.4/glibmm/threads.h There are other files on my Slackware partition called threads.h but this is the one Inkscape 0.91 uses. Currently my attempt at a bzr based compile has produced 0.91pre2r13528. The key to that process is to run autogen.sh, then ./configure and make. BTW Inkscape compiles run longer than any others I have done on any system since I worked on tape-only systems in the 1960's. Swatch dialogs improvements

Hi! I've introduced some of the improvements to the swatch dialog, that were discussed on the mailing list. First of all the default behavior when applying solid color swatches is to apply them by color value. There's a toggle button added, that allows to switch to the mode in which solid colors are applied by reference to a paint server [1]. Currently the paint server is linear gradient, but since solidColor elements are in codebase, the dialog will use them in the future. Second improvement is related to the appearance of the swatches dialog. Padding between swatches was removed and an option to turn on borders was added [2]. The dialog also supports 16x16 tile size [3]. In this case the tiles representing gradients, patterns and hatches are bigger. Hatch support was added to Swatches dialog and Fill and Stroke dialog [4]. The UI allows to select and apply a swatch. The swatch properties dialog allows to change pitch and rotate parameters. Files containing hatches can be placed in hatches subdirectory in either user config or global config directories. I've used the file [5] containing default AutoCAD ANSI hatches. Because the end of GSOC 2014 is near, I'd like those code changes to be last ones. I'll spend the last days on writing code documentation. Hovewer if you see something that definitely has to be done before monday, please let me know. The project will evolve after GSOC ends. I'll try to make the paint preview more compact. An on-canvas editing tool for hatches will be usefull too. Hi Friends, I've been helping Martin on the inkscape.org website. And that somehow has grown to include the wiki. But of course, I'm glad to help. He says user info, such as forums, tutorials and galleries should not be part of the wiki, so that the wiki is only for developers. I've already transferred (and updated!) some of that user-related stuff to a test page for the website (http://staging.inkscape.org/en/brynntest/?edit&language=en). (I think all the galleries need to be moved to another page, but that hasn't been decided yet, that I know of.) (If the Community page looks like that, then the Learn page would look like this http://staging.inkscape.org/en/brynns-learn-page/?edit&language=en). Anyway, there is a *whole bunch* of user-related stuff in the wiki, and he said it would be better to ask the community about some of these questions. Since the current FAQ, which is shown both in the wiki and on the website, has as much user-related info as developer info, it needs to be split into 2 FAQs, which I've just started working on. (Maybe the user faq would be on the Learn page?) I find that the answer to item 2.11 (Is there a way to apply a gradient to a stroke so that it bends with the stroke?), links to 2 images, which are no longer there. If I knew what the author of that faq item was talking about, I could substitute some other images. I sort of know what the text is alluding to, but without the images, it's not clear. There are at least 3 or 4 ways that I know of, to fake a curved gradient (although maybe just a couple specifically for a stroke). And I can certainly describe each one (in the answer). And I know that there is a tutorial packed with Inkscape (share/examples/rope-3D.svg), which I can provide directions for readers to find. But the community is FULL of really nice tutorials. I know that, because of my research in writing this page on my Inkscape support website http://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php. And coincidentally, I just wrote a tutorial on one of these techniques. So my first question: When I come across bad links, (dead, empty, not found pages, etc), what would be the best way to handle it? Can I link to any appropriate image or tutorial? Or should the links only go to "official" resources? What if those "official" resources don't exist? The 2nd question: When I come across answers to user-related questions in the FAQ, such as item 2.21 (Can I change the Inkscape theme?) where the answer is in wiki, what should I do? In this case, the answer provides a link to here: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Customizing_Inkscape which is a fairly substantial page in the wiki. If that info should not be in the wiki, where should it be? Should I write all that info from the wiki page, in the answer in the faq? Thanks for your help. precompiled version of 0.91 for Linux

Is there a precompiled version of 0.91 for linux--any version? I've tried pre0 and pre1, on slackware, Ubuntu and openSUSE. The errors vary, but glibmm seems to be the culprit. Second question: what version of glibmm are the developers using? It seems to work on Windows 7 using the precompiled version. But Windows really sucks when pulling illos off the screen. And the 0.91 main screen is significantly different from 0.48.5 Why is this a big deal? Well I am writing books on two applications, book covers and web pages, both using Inkscape. I don't want them to be instantly obsolete. Status of 0.91 and a vote on the bug hunt!

With us now at the halfway milestone for the bug hunt, this is a good point to reflect on how the release is doing, and I'd like to hear your thoughts. In past releases we set a goal of 500 points worth of bugs; today we've hit 778, which is pretty amazing! We set a higher goal than usual due to the length of time since our last release, knowing that we probably needed to give more time than usual for QA and to get things stabilized. How do you feel we're doing? Do you feel Inkscape is solid enough that we could call it good on the bug hunt and proceed with the next stage of the release (perhaps with a select list of must-fix blocker bugs)? Or do you think the bug hunt is helping stimulate a lot of good bug work that we should continue? Or something else entirely? Give me your vote publically or privately and I'll make the appropriate course changes to get the release moving ahead. Bryce

0.48.5 and libsigc++-2.3.2

Hi, I do some things at beyond linuxfromscratch ( http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/view/svn/ ) and have recently started including 0.48.5 in my own builds. We have been using libsigc++-2.3.1 for some time (I guess that whoever added it did not realis it was a development version), so we went with 2.3.2. Unfortunately, that breaks inkscape-0.48.5. The specific change was announced at https://mail.gnome.org/archives/libsigc-list/2014-August/msg00000.html where it mentioned runtime errors for users who added their own visit_each overload. In fact, for 0.48.5 it broke the build, and the relevant message appeared to be : /usr/include/sigc++-2.0/sigc++/visit_each.h:169:64: error: cannot convert ‘const sigc::adaptor_functor<sigc::bound_mem_functor0<void, SPDesktop> >’ to ‘int’ in initialization /usr/include/sigc++-2.0/sigc++/visit_each.h:169:29: warning: unused variable ‘do_visit_each’ [-Wunused-variable] { sigc::visitor<T_functor>::do_visit_each(_A_action, _A_functor); } ^ CXX device-manager.o Makefile:5958: recipe for target 'desktop.o' failed make[2]: *** [desktop.o] Error 1 Dropping back to 2.3.1 fixed it. Cairo rendering of SVG arcs

Hi I found out that for certain SVG files, rendering can likely be sped up a lot by directly rendering SVG elliptical arcs with Cairo instead of converting them to cubic Beziers and rendering those. I expanded our current code in experimental to do that, and it... almost works. I'm not quite sure what I'm doing wrong at the moment, hopefully someone can help me with that! The code works well for perfect circles. It does not work well for ellipses, but doesn't seem to have any issues with rotation of ellipses. That fixed it and now CLI rendering of a file with a tremendous amount of arcs seems to be a bit faster: Unpatched trunk: 0m9.161s Patched trunk: 0m7.577s However, something else I might have to investigate is that with my sample file, experimental seems to have suffered a serious performance regression: Unpatched experimental: 0m20.539s Patched experimental: 0m19.482s

Hello Recently there was a change to SVG parsing in lib2geom, so that arc segments that end less that EPSILON (1e-5) units from where they begin are ignored. However, this threshold is completely arbitrary and there is no way to change it. I think this should either be changed to strict equality, or there should be a way to set this threshold (in Inkscape, it should be dependent on the numeric precision of XML output). As the previous email was sent only to one person, see below as well :-) I forgot to mention one thing: MSYS2 has a clang that can be used to compile applications. Unfortunately, GCC 4.9.1 header locations aren't yet added to the build, so currently it's not possible to use it. Note that Clang on Windows only works on 32-bit (for now, will change in the future) and with the dw2 C++ exceptions implementation. SVG2 hatch rendering

Hi! I've implemented the rendering of SVG2 hatches in lp:~penginsbacon/inkscape/svg-paints-support. How it works can be seen using a test file attached to this message. The rectangles in left columns are filled with hatches, while the ones in right columns are reference images consisting of clipped paths. What is still to be done is to implement rendering when overflow property is set visible. In addition to this, I have to improve rendering when hatch covered object is zoomed out. The second problem can be seen in the picture [1]. The cause is aliasing when rendered cairo_pattern_t is applied to a shape. One of the solutions is to adjust applied pattern size to full pixels. This can be achieved by manipulating the transformation applied to the pattern by ink_cairo_pattern_set_matrix in drawing-pattern.cpp:119. The drawback of this rendering hatch paths at displaced positions, what can be visible in case of large shapes. Another solution is to allocate pattern surface of the size of object bounding box and to draw all hatch paths on it. The third one is to increase oversampling and use CAIRO_FILTER_NEAREST for hatches. What techique do you recommend? I'd like to add hatches to Swatches and Fill and Stroke dialogs and prepare stock hatches based on ISO 128-50 standard being used in Europe for technical drawing. As there are more SVG2 elements supported in Inkscape, how should fallback to SVG1.1 look like? Should there be an another output extension? In case of hatches should they be converted to patterns? Fix for #601336 (Pattern rotation crash)

Hi all, I came up with a fix for this week's bug of the week ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/601336 ). However, I'm bringing it up here for two reasons: 1. It's a fairly large patch (and it modifies sp-item.h) 2. It introduces new, little-tested functionality I'm more concerned about the second item on the list. The fix was to introduce separate knots for stroke and fill patterns, and to make stroke pattern transformations independent of fill transformations. If anyone has time, I'd appreciate any feedback. Windows x64 and gtk3

Hi all, I've added a gtk3 build rule to the 64-bit Windows devlibs[0]. I'd like people to start testing out the gtk3 look on Windows. As the gtk3 for x86 developers probably figured out, the MS-Windows default theme looks awful with the new gtk3 version[1]. So I've again decided to stick with the Adwaita theme for compilation, which is much nicer[2]. I don't plan on returning to Windows anytime soon, so I would advise all who build on Windows to please fix any problems I might have overlooked in the build rule. Thanks, Liam [0]. Different handling of x, y for path vs. text breaking text clipping

Hi all, I'm trying to get clipping on text read in from EMF to work properly and r13463 (and maybe earlier) is doing something odd in that it is treating path and text coordinates differently, but ONLY when it reads the SVG "hot off the press" from the EMF read. If the exact same SVG is first emitted to a file and then read in directly, it works fine. Here is one such file(retrieve only directory): http://saf.bio.caltech.edu/pub/pickup/mangle_clip.svg that has the clipping more or less right when viewed in Firefox and when opened in Inkscape. But when the source EMF file is read directly, the coordinates of the <text> pieces are transformed and a <transform> tag is added to the <text>, the coordinates of the <path> draw are not transformed. Since both reference the same clipping path, this breaks clipping for text, because the coordinates of the clip-path must match up with those of the <text> IN the <text>, not AFTER it. If the text were not being clipped, the transform would not make a difference (but it is, so it does). Code cleanup in trunk

Hi Markus, Thanks for the code cleanups in trunk. One comment: please be careful in removing nullptr checks in trunk. Although they look unnecessary, we really don't want to (re-)add bugs. In rev 13460, you removed a this == nullptr check. It's terrible code, I agree. The problem is that some other bad code may still rely on that check. I'm not saying that's the case for that particular piece of code, but I'd rather not remove such checks in trunk until after release. Small tip for people bughunting, "this" in a class method can be nullptr. A call through nullptr to non-virtual method will happily pass. Because we changed code like f(SPFoo *g) { if (!g) return; to Foo::f() { if (!this) return; you may see a check on "this" in the code. If you are sure that all callers make sure the object is not nullptr, you can remove the check in experimental. thanks, Johan

New functions were added to the swatches dialog. The most important is the ability to modify swatches. A swatch properties dialog was added. When a swatch in "current document" category is selected, "swatch properties" option is active. After clicking it a dialog appears. It is possible to change swatch name. Technically it is stored in title child element. Swatch preview is displayed at the bottom of the dialog. Depending on swatch type different controls can be displayed. For colors a color notebook widget is used to change swatch value [1]. Pattern attributes can be changed using attribute table widget [2]. Gradient support has been added. Gradients having a gradient vector defined are displayed in swatches panel [3]. The user can apply gradient to existing object. It is linear by default. An exception to this is applying gradient to an object with existing radial one. All pattern types can be chosen when no item is selected on canvas. In this case newly created items will receive selected style. They were rejected and replaced by integration of pattern preview widget in a fill and stroke tab. At those time, the mockups didn't involve the swatches dialog. Got it working now. I'm not sure if I fixed this or someone else. The news article was set to be published, but the publish time was future in my timezone. two new icons propose

Hi to all. Because GTK declare obsolete "yes" and "no" icons, and "accept" and "cancel" icons are handled by his label -so you can not change his label to a custom text i think-, I propose the creation of two icons in the icon files of inkscape. I want particulary to use in the new LPE parameter "Toggle Button", now is used in experimental branch -Simplify LPE-. For this LPE I'm using "system-run" and "process-stop" GTK default icons, but i think is better a toogled button for example like bullets here[1]. http://www.inkscape.org/en/develop/next-release/ Any problem to add it? Josh, I tested the OS X package on two Mavericks systems yesterday and they seemed to work great. I tried it on a Snow Leopard system today with a good install. Thanks! Initially the load time for the newly installed version seems to take 2-3 minutes, but subsequent loads are under a minute. --Jared

trunk vs. experimental: Snapping with alt-drag

Hi Diederik, all, There is a discrepancy between experimental and trunk with regards to snapping when alt-dragging. When the grid is enabled, alt-dragging should move the selection in grid-spacing steps. But when the movement is less than one grid-spacing, there is no snapping. Diederik, can you look into this? Take the measures of the bounding box that appears when I select all objects and save it to a file. 3-. Call an executable in the system path. I'm using Inkscape nightly build.

New swatches dialog and questions

Hi! I'd like to post a video of a new swatches dialog[1]. It displays color swatches and patterns as preview tiles divided into palettes. The palettes are read from .gpl and .svg files in stock directories. One category "Current document" is special, as it shows paint servers from currently opened document. The dialog allows applying swatches to fill and stroke. It is also possible to create new swatches based on current object solid fill or stroke. New pattern can be created by invoking "object to pattern" command from add menu. How do you like it? I still have some issues to be implemented and I'd like to ask you some questions about it. 1) I would like to implement modifying existing patterns. My original idea was to create new dialog "swatch properties". Now I think using existing "object attributes" and "object properties" dialogs would be simpler and more versatile. After clicking a modify button a popup will appear [2]. Each option would show appropriate dialog. The content of the property dialogs is based on current selection, and there is no option to display the properties of arbitrary objects. I have two possibilites: * set selection to swatch element (having solidColor, gradient or pattern tag). Selection API allows it, but only visible objects are selected in inkscape so far. * modify the property dialogs to enable editing arbitrary objects by adding a setObject(SPObject *) method. Which of the options is favourable? 2) The dialog should enable removing swatches. I think placing, rather long, implementation of this feature in swatches dialog class might not be the best solution. Where else can I place the code? 3) Old swatches dialog supplies an "auto" palette. It consists of swatch objects from current document that have "obs:swatch" attribute defined. The new one displays all swatches from current document. Should I keep the the palette? It's likely quite a forgotten thing, but filters as they stand, do contain a crude method along these lines. If you go into settings, you can drop the filters rendering quality, which will limit the rendering resolution when editing. You will get quite notable artifacts, but it's vastly faster in many cases. There are a couple quality settings available in the filtering code. It could be useful to look into those and see if there's some better default combination than what we have now.

Large filter areas

Hi ppl, It's no surprise that filters can make Inkscape crawl, and I ran into that while digging into this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/827192 In this case though, the area to be filtered measures 18416 x 17524 pixels, which is a bit too much for just on screen display. Is there any way to work around this? Can't we set an upper limit on the area, in order to keep Inkscape somewhat responsive? If it takes a few seconds that's OK IMHO in such extreme cases, but at least the user should be able to trust that Inkscape will recover. Diederik

Hi Friends, I've been given edit privileges at inkscape.org from Martin Owens. I want to re-organize and edit some of the community info, including Inkscape forums, tutorials and galleries. I came across info about forums, tutorials and galleries in the "old" wiki, and wanted to know about incorporating it into the new inkscape.org. He suggested that forums, tutorials and galleries probably don't belong in the wiki anyway, and said I should delete them, if I can get access to the wiki. He said the wiki (an updated and current wiki) should only contain development, design, code, etc., anyway. (Also told me to email this mailing list to ask for a wiki account.) So assuming you all are in agreement with him, I'm asking for access to be able to edit the wiki. I'll be glad to do any tedious, menial work that might need to be done there, to bring it up to meet the current needs of the community -- if anyone can tell me what kind of work that would be. Should I get access to the wiki, I would be at your disposal. Maybe most of you probably don't know me, but I've been a moderator at InkscapeForum.com for a few years, and nearly a year ago, opened a new Inkscape website (http://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php). Ehm,.. not Inkscape related really, but I am looking for a C++ programmer to earn a few thousand euro's with a probably fairly easy task. (my estimate is a week part-time). I thought someone here might be interested and it would sort of indirectly help the project as well by supporting my favourite programmers. I hope not with a weeks delay though, don't want to interrupt what's going on here. If interested, send me your rating fee and we'll pick it up from there. GSoC Project Update

Hello The midterm evaluations are near due, so here's a public update on my GSoC project. The schedule this year was very bad for me, and dealing with university stuff ate most of my time in the first half of the project, so I didn't do nearly as much as I hoped for. I have however made a prototype CGAL-based implementation of boolops. It is available in 2Geom trunk; you have to have CGAL installed, its headers available in your default include path, and set the CMake option CGAL_TOYS=ON to compile it. Saying "sudo apt-get install libcgal-dev" suffices to satisfy the first two requirements on Ubuntu 14.04. The results of playing with this toy are rather disappointing. CGAL produces visibly imprecise results even for simple shapes (see attached pictures), and for some inputs (e.g. when sliding two bananas over each other so that they nearly match) it crashes with an assertion. It seems that its boolean operation algorithm for Beziers is of very poor quality. This means I will have to write the boolops code from scratch. I've found a MIT-licensed Objective-C library that implements boolops on Bezier paths, which may serve as an inspiration. https://bitbucket.org/andyfinnell/vectorboolean During the remaining time before midterm, I'll work on path-related APIs in 2Geom. This will be useful when implementing boolops, and will allow us to get rid of ugly ancient stuff in Inkscape, such as SPCurve. Threading problem in extension system

Hi all, There is a threading problem with the extension system. It results in a crash when saving a document and quitting while the save is happening. Have a look here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/967416 I don't know enough about glib's threading to fix this bug. I do not fully understand where the execution flow is going after the fork (/src/extension/implementation/script.cpp, line 1017, _main_loop->run();), nor where the fork is terminated. I hope someone who knows more about this can have a look. I'm afraid it may lead to pretty weird bugs when running time consuming extensions and doing stuff meanwhile. (gdb reports illegal mem accesses when doing stuff while an extension is running, for example). Is this asynchronous extension execution so important, or can we disable it for now to improve stability? regards, Johan

Stable PPA not built correctly

Hi, I've noticed a problem with the stable PPA. It seems to contain incorrectly built packages. The resulting .deb files from the build are approximately 12 KiB. They contain no binary data. Undefined but declared hash<> template causing C++11 trouble

Hi Krzysz, The following lines in ui/tool/node.h are causing trouble with gcc 4.9 C++11: #if HAVE_TR1_UNORDERED_SET namespace std { namespace tr1 { template <typename N> struct hash< Inkscape::UI::NodeIterator<N> >; } } #endif Is it OK to remove those? Hi all, Recently, a fix to Bug 1241902 was committed. But... I have second thoughts now. Do we really want to apply LPEs to clip and masks? Now, clips on a path with, say, LPE Sketch, works very weird. I now think that we really don't want to apply LPEs on clips/masks. cheers, Johan

Windows Compilation 0.91pre1

I am having some difficulty with the latest code (also for 0.48.5 series) which I didn't have before or didn't notice before. :) There are lot of places where M_PI and friends is/are used without it/they being in scope. In some files, M_PI is defined right in with #ifndef block. What would be the fastest way (other than modifying the source all over the place) of rectifying this? A lot of the Windows specific stuff is defined with the #ifdef WIN32 block. However, in my case it only works if it's _WIN32 and not WIN32. This of course I can pass on the command line to gcc. Would be nice if it was standard as say glib or gimp. Thanks, Partha

This project is rocking and we should count our website as a major outlet for news and contributions. That's half a million users a month, 80% of who never visited before. If you take a look at the files, os wise we have a lot of windows and mac visitors. Plenty of iOS ones too, more than android. I feel we should make our os downloads more prominent on the front page. That's where most people are going. Language is interesting too. Lots of French, German, Japanese and Spanish. We should make sure that our website translations are up to scratch for these languages especially. Search terms are also interesting. Common mis-spellings for inkscape are inkspace, inscape, inskape, incscape, inkskape, inkscap, inscape, 'ink space' etc. Which looks like people heard is by ear and heard 'in' or instead of 'ink' and 'space' instead of 'scape'. Various variations on c for k and lots of transpositions. Other popular terms: download, free, vector, svg, drawing, program, software, tutorial, mac, illustrator, open source, editor, msi, osx and x11. Some searches of 'inkscape portable' spread around th results, not sure what that is or if people are searching for phone versions. Yes, the osxmenu branch is looking really fantastic. I believe though that those builds are hosted on su_v’s personal drobox account, and considering the amount of traffic this thread has been getting (it’s over 10k views now), it may be better to share them as torrents or mirror them somewhere else so su_v’s account doesn’t get hammered. The part of the id before the dash is probably correlated with fonts, as in glyph1 might be "Arial", glyph2 "Courier", and so forth, but the part after is just numbered sequentially for each "glyph*" variant. Whoever is working on this might have a look at the code for "pdftotext", which comes with poppler. If that program uses the same import code it will show at least one way to retain text as text. (Or it might be completely separate from poppler's usual import and not be of any use at all. PDFs have a broad spectrum of how text is encoded and without seeing the example we can't be sure where the issue is. These PDFs all look the same on the screen, but... The best case encodes each letter as its own glyph, and the encoding matches up with unicode. These are searchable with text strings in PDF viewers. Not quite so good, the PDF merges pairs of letters like "fi" into one glyph. This looks good as a graphic but causes hiccups when it hits any text processing code. These are mostly searchable, but (in this example) "file" would not be found, even when the word is staring the user in the face on the screen. Compensating is possible in special cases if there is a table of the common instances of this, and the import code splits out the merged glyphs. Really bad, PDF embeds glyphs and assigns arbitrary codes for each glyph, so that there is no correspondence whatsoever between the encoding and UTF or ASCII. These cannot be searched and will be imported as gibberish. Miserable to straighten out, but in theory it can be done by first searching each embeded glyph from the PDF against the corresponding font (assuming that can be identified), to make a table that back translates to unicode. Impossible - PDF converts text to graphic draws and there are no explicit glyphs whatsoever. This normally only shows up if the exporting program has told the program generating the PDF to do this. It might happen without the user being aware of it if the export code passes through a stage where it is forced to bitmap text in order to satisfy some special effect the program uses that cannot be represented in PDF (or in some cases in Postscript, if the PDF driver goes through the usual Windows Postscript driver.)
