Help needed and website redesign update

All, Sorry for the lag in updates regarding the site. It has been a bit depressing and I also have been extremely busy. In all honesty we had a great design and some extremely motivated people who started the project of redoing the website. As with all open source projects time and experience got the best of us (myself included). The website design was completed long ago and it looks great. It can be seen here http://en.dev.inkscape.org/ . We started the migration portion and that's about as far as we got. We had one backend mostly complete when we realized that that dev was unable to complete the project without a rewrite and sadly lacked the time due to school commitments etc. Next we had a second developer start rewriting the code and unfortunately due to time constraints is unable to finish. That being said I am open to suggestions but we need a strict time line to at least complete the basic portion of the inkscape site. That being said, We need help. The project was started both times in django, however was never completed. I also may even be open for consideration of Content management systems that would allow us to build in these features fairly easily and allow the site to contain the same functionality and UI. If you have any talent in the web development world. Please get back to me and lets get the ball rolling! I know the holiday's can sometimes allow time to tinker but they also can be difficult times as well. Please feel free to make suggestions on how you're able to help us complete the website redesign. Problems building current release on Windows XP with Devlibs41

Tried to upgrade today, found inkscape now needs devlibs 41. Got that, modified mingwenv.bat to point to it. Ran btool. SVG closing path syntax

Hi, At today's SVG working group meeting we talked a bit about path syntax in regards to how paths are closed. It has been proposed that if the last point in in the last path command is missing that the first point in the path be used: M x,y ... C x1,y1 x2,c2 z would be the same as M x,y ... C x1,y1 x2,2, x,y z The advantage of the proposed syntax change is that if relative path commands are used, one can ensure that the path is closed properly without introducing the little closing line segment that can result from rounding error (if the last point doesn't fall exactly on top of the first). Hey All, Johan has fixed the outstanding bug that has been holding 0.48.4 up. I'm announcing that people have 1 week left to backport any fixes for that release and all changes should be completed by December 12th. Seeking input on moving forward

Hey all, As of right now there hasn't really been much headway on the renderer related bugs we have which will block 0.49 as well as no action on the security bug stopping all releases. 0.49 should be in feature freeze at this point so we can work towards releasing it (you know, being friendly to translators and all), but other than our blocker bugs, people are still happily working on other features and items that they're wanting merged in (connector cleanup, "spiro live", etc). Does anyone have any proposals on how we should move forward given the issues holding us back? Is it time that we move to using more branches as a project? One possible route would be to branch off 0.49 and allow open work to resume on trunk. Another is to create a "staging" branch that accepted merge proposals can all land in to get further testing. Note: After this experience, if things have known regressions, I feel strongly that they should not be merged into an actual "to be released" branch until those issue are resolved. I'm open to suggestions. Development shouldn't stagnate, but at this point things aren't looking good with a feature freeze in place and no signs of our blockers getting taken care of. Cheers, Josh

Hi, Folks from GNOME design team just asked me about ways to "hide" unused assets like templates and color swatches, so out of interest I've had a look, and it seems to me that indeed we could let go of some stuff. E.g. for templates that would be: - all desktop_* except probably 1600x1200 (640x480 is useful in 2012? for real?) - no_borders and no_layers (sounds like someone should just need to master custom templates) - default_mm and default_pt (same as above) - fontforge_glyph (obsoleted by typography_canvas) What do you think? Rotating objects around their center

Hi all, I would like to rotate objects around their center by altering the Inkscape SVG of an image. Since the object have already been translated, I need to merge the rotate with that. devlibs update (r39)

Hi, The devlibs have just been updated to r39 in order to activate Visio file import on Windows (Wordperfect libs have been updated, and a new visio lib has been added). Note that the modifications also required some changes in the build.xml file, and that you need to update the trunk to revision 11925 so that Inkscape compiles correctly. The 0.48.x branch doesn't use libvisio, but also needs an update (revision 9931) to take the Wordperfect changes into account. Regards. -- Nicolas

Connector Work

Hey Devs, I've got a plan for getting last year's connector work into use. I've updated the branch to the latest trunk (damn you changes!) so I'd like to get this merged in because it removes 1110 lines and replaces them with 91. So it's a big cleanup of code that was never in use: https://code.launchpad.net/~doctormo/inkscape/knot-visio This branch should maintain the same functionality as we currently have, plus a focus on the next steps to improve the functionality. Testing is required and advice for more experienced cpp developers about the use of std::map instead of a more appropriate std::list structure which I'm hoping can be picked up in merge review. The next steps are the exciting parts. I thought the idea from last year about having a generic point anchor tool was really interesting. So the way the connector work will happen is, it'll simply use other non-connector functionality to achieve everything we want. The anchor tool would insert a point path, which would be displayed on screen with either an knot-anchor which would just move along with it, or some other visual identifier which would not appear in renders. It would be selectable using the near-detection and then groupable, transformable etc because it's a real point element on the canvas. The anchor tool would be useful for a few functionalities. For the connector work we would use the point to join connectors together on canvas, as custom points on shapes when grouped with them, act as flexible points where custom paths around objects are required. This offers the best combination of features while not requiring any custom attributes or elements and doesn't require a exo-canvas def addition (which would suck IMO). It's also groovy because the amount of code will be small and use lots of existing code to achieve what we want. Hello David, You're right, it involves using both split lines and remove manual kerns in that order. If you have for instance two columns of text, the import will collect it into one <text> object with several <tspan> and place every single character using a dx and dy position. To keep the whole thing in place, you need to split the lines, then remove the manual kernings. If you do the remove manual kerns first, you end up with a single column of text with tspan. The benefit is that you can edit the text more easily, but it doesn't look remotely like the pdf document. A function that would collect grouped text and place it into a single text with tspans in a similar way would be extremely useful, even if it doesn't allow for editing that well. Text search and retrieval would become a lot easier with it. I think however that a smarter algorithm that would collect characters in the same string and place them on a baseline defined by the tspan element and it's relative position to the text tag would be a giant step towards more useable PDF text import. And it seems the same goes for PS text. BTW if the pdf import comes across unknown characters, it will use that as escape codes and create a new tspan rather than using a undefined glyph to fill the hole (have that when "()" are in the original text generated from a Chinese version windows for instance. Probably some gb2312 to Unicode conversion bug.) Anyway,.. keep up the good work, typesetting hasn't been Inkscape's strong point traditionally, so any work on that is greatly appreciated. Knot Handles

Hey Gang, I'm trying to understand knots, I've introduced a bug with my changes that mean knots are created correctly, but then don't disapear when the focus changes. I can't find enough information about their internal operation to know if they handle this internally or if I should be implementing a LEAVE case in the item handle (which the code never had before, so how did it work before?) Translations and r11895 bug in flow text

Hi Guys, Just to report that r11895 has a rather ugly bug in the flow text. After creating an initial text, I wasn't able to edit it anymore. Unfortunately launchpad is in the 3 second zone of timeouts for me in Chongqing, China and I've never been able to use it, otherwise I'd add the bug list there. Please bear with my good intention. And David, If you've ever imported a PDF file with lots of text in layouts, you may have noticed that every single character gets a position. Now that's fine until you try to change the text in any way as the text string will change, but not the positions string. In other words, you end up with garbage. The workaround for that is to use the split text extension. Which cleans up all the manual kernings nicely. Maybe that can lead you to solve your problem as well, as it seems related. Hello, This page does not mention inkscape.com versus inkscape.exe. I wasted many hours yesterday, eventually discovered this: http://kaioa.com/node/63 and this morning after discovering this http://stackoverflow.com/a/8030880/95195I realized my problem is I was executing inkscape.exe and not inkscape from the command prompt. Obscure kerning issue

My code to reassemble text from pieces written to EMF files is working great now except for one nagging problem, which only shows up in a few special cases involving manually kerned text. Consider these three sequences: 1. <period><space><A>(hkern + 3.75)<vertical bar> 2. <period><A>(hkern + 3.75)<vertical bar> 3. <period><space><A><vertical bar> The individual pieces written to the EMF (not reassembled) map exactly onto the originals, so there is no problem in the output coordinates. However, when reassembled into a single <text><tspan> complex (2) and (3) are still OK, but (1) is off, with the vertical bar offset leftwards towards the "A", yet the ". A" is exactly where it should be. I have tracked the problem down to the extent that I know Inkscape's display code is calculating the width of ". A" differently, when manual kerning is present, than just the sum of the advances of those characters. (Logic: the complex looks like <text><tspan></tspan><tspan</tspan><text> and the second tspan pair has a dx value calculated by subtracting from the start position of the fragment [which is correct] the start position of the previous fragment [which is also correct] plus the width of the previous fragment [which must therefore not be correct]. Changing dx to match the original kerning fixes the problem - also consistent with the calculated width not matching that from Freetype2.) Inkscape seems not to be using Freetype Kerning corrections of this type: FT_Get_Kerning( fsp->face, prev_glyph_index, glyph_index, kern_mode, &akerning ) I tried adding that, and while there was a correction for " A", it only half fixed the problem. Besides, I could not find a call to FT_Get_Kerning anywhere in the source. (It might be called indirectly by some other library.) This was all done on one machine, so it isn't a case of mismatched fonts between machines. Anybody have a thought on what Inkscape might be doing to come up with a different string width in this particular instance? Thanks, David Mathog mathog@...1176... hey guys, I'm developing an extension to manage translations (which I do via launchpad and xml2po) but I'm having trouble with tspans. The problem seems to be that inkscape saves multiple values for the x attribute for some (not all) tspan sections. Specifying the letter placements is death to translations as the number and size of letters is guaranteed to be different. Is there any api way to strip out these bumbling attributes or better have them not appear in the first place? Thanks for your time. Best Regards, Martin Owens

Anyone can confirm if this is really a bug ?

I'm not really sure about this being really a bug so I'm asking before creating a bug report. The bug is checked using Windows 7 64 bits and Inkscape 0.48 The steps for reproducing are: 1. Create empty file. 2. Create a rectangle ( or any other shape ) 3. Open Fill and Stroke menu 4. Select Stroke tab. 5. Grab color picker tool. 6. Select any color in the document. What happens: The fill colour becomes the one picked with the tool. What I think it should happen: Since the stroke tab is selected, the stroke colour should become the one selected with the tool and not the fill colour. 0.49 release status update

Hey All, It's almost time we move on to Feature Freeze, at this point I'm saying let's put it out there as November 30th. I had delayed it to get in a couple new features and the reason I'm not just saying it's today is to leave it open for John Smith for a shortcut editor akin to GIMP's (if it can be completed in time). The current list of bugs milestoned for 0.49 is at 50... and that is quite high. Can people help reduce this number some? My guess is things like the tutorial updates for 0.49 are not likely to make it for example. https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bugs?field.searchtext=&orderby=-import… The real issue though is that we currently have 13 blocker bugs, all but one of which are regressions caused by the new renderer or rendering cache. https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bugs?field.searchtext=&orderby=-import… In addition to these blockers, we still have a security bug that is blocking 0.48.4 and will also block 0.49. Please focus efforts on fixing bugs rather than enhancing features at this point. The two exceptions to this are for the shortcut editor and the newly committed symbols dialog, polishing things like this is good. String Freeze will go into effect on November 30th at this point, but I HIGHLY recommend translators get started now if they haven't started already (as was previously recommended). Unfortunately, it does not look like we're going to be able to get the release out this year as originally hoped. At the current rate I hope we can get it out in Q1 of next year. How does sodipodi:linespacing determine the vertical spacing to the next line? From a bit of experimenting it looks like it starts with this: sodipodi:linespacing="125%" and then looks at the maximum font size in all of the <tspan>'s included under the following <tspan sodipodi:role="line" and multiplies those together. So if the largest is 16pt, it uses 20pt for the linespacing. Is there anything else involved, or is that the entire method? Also, if this is all inside a <text> with style="font-size:32.000000pt;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;font-weight:400;font-stretch:Normal;line-height:125%;letter-spacing:0px;word-spacing:0px;fill:#000000;fill-opacity:1;stroke:none;text-align:start;text-anchor:start;font-family:Arial;" Changing font-size or line-height makes absolutely no difference in the display. Inkscape 0.48+devel r11870 and Units

Hi Guys, Testing this recent build. Inkscape 0.48+devel r11870 So far: New stuff: - Love the Symbol manager. It will greatly inprove productivity. I wish that a similar thing could be done with first level grouped objects and using the same CTRL+select for objects within that. Ehm,.. a small note saying Use CTRL+C to copy might help though, as I tried clicking and dragging first. BTW. If it would follow the rule of always paste in place, it would be a great help in templating designs. - The new text edit docker is great! Would have liked to see a list of fonts used in the document though, so you can more easily select from the fonts already chosen, find out missing fonts etc.. Could that be added to a third tab? Old stuff: - It's the old clip an object and get to select the object rather than the clipped area bug. So my clip displays the size of the clipped object rather than the clipping area. Now really...that is something that needs fixing. BTW,.. using the create copy of clipping object to create area rather than the default. Releasing the clip doesn't recreate a copy of the clipping object on the screen, clippath is left in defs. So I guess the function has to be extended with a function to copy that node back to the correct z-order of the objects. Question: - Does Inkscape already support SVG font display (Tiny, not Full)? I know Mozilla doesn't support it and probably never will, but I really would love to use them regardless. I have several use cases in mind that are uniquely possible using SVG fonts and don't care if users will have to use "Modern" browsers like ahem.. the rest. Now we can create Glyphs, but I am not sure if it is possible to display them yet. I'll do more testing during the next few weeks, if there's anything you'd like me to pay attention to, please tell as there are a lot of things, new and old. On the Units discussion: The idea is simple Inkscape uses px as units. In the config we can set the amount of pixels per unit, so we end up with 90dpi (standard screenres in 2000) or just set it to 10px per mm or whatever. That way poor buggers like me that design in mm for print and need to get this used on screen won't have to use a calculator to convert the x,y locations with a 6 decimal precision and make these horrid choices on how to handle the half a pixel sizes. Using 3.50xxxx etc. really does my head in at times. Nowhere in the SVG specs does it implicitly say how many PPI to use, it's arbitrary. However, as it was concieved to be used as a screen format, it became pixels per Inch to follow the industry standard. The latter we can blame on Silicon Valley being the place where the early stages of IT were conducted rather than Bletchly Park or Paris. The whole zoom factor is not the issue. It's having a SVG document that has been converted from mm to Inches and then PPI. If I have a 85x55mm businesscard, I'd love to be able to read that in the SVG file as 850x550 px rather than 309.2xxxxx x 190.1xxxxx. That way I can more easily create guidelines and additional objects on screen in my web application without having to calculate every friggin measurement and ending up with those quirky estimations. Maybe Inkscape development isn't always a bliss, but I think with little effort Development using Inkscape can be made a bliss. Adding a setting for Pixels per Unit will greatly improve my sense of bliss at least. For others it may also be a handy way to solve their problems they encounter with scaling if there was an additional recalculator function added to this scaling. That would be a nice extension maybe. "Change/Convert pixels per unit"... Oh joy! I could reset tonnes of hardly usable SVG code with that..! Well,.. Cheers Jelle

Hello. Im new to develop whith BZR. I develop a branch, and after i made a lot of changes on the branch but i want to know what version of code is better. What i do? 2 branches or update original branch whith the new code. The new code is more powerful but im not sure is ok whith the filosophy of inkscape, because made more changes to the code and change some behviors on usage. Another cuestion is about lang. I want to chage some mensagges in the GUI. IN the core i change it in english but i want to know how to prepare for inernatioalization. Is only one or two mensages in the tip bottom zone. Thanks in advance and sorry for my english. P.D. Think is beter put the mensages in my natural -spanish- lang too?

Cannot build Inkscape with newest Mingw, devlibs36

XP SP3, 32 bit. I had been happily building inkscape branch lp988601 on XP using a version of mingw with gcc 4.6.2 and devlibs32. Yesterday I tried to upgrade this build environment, and while it builds to completion, the resulting inkscape does not run. Method 1. mv ming mingw_save 2. Download mingw-getinst-20120426.exe from sourceforge. Run it, install C,C++ compilers and Mingw Devel. This resulted in gcc 4.7.2 and w32api and iconv installed (the latter two had to be installed separately last time.). 5. bzr checkout --lightweight lp:inkscape-devlibs devlibs Move the folder to /c/progs/devlibs36. 6. modify mingwenv.bat in inkscape directory to use /c/progs/devlibs36. 7. g++ buildtool.cpp -o btool -fopenmp btool -version BuildTool v0.9.9multi 8. bzr revert bzr update bzr revno (11707) btool clean btool (builds to completion) inkscape\inkscape -> BOOOM! inkscape.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. Thanks for your help Sorin. In spiro paths there are "two kinds of node type" cusp node (all except SYMM node) or spyiro node (SYMM node). I think about to avoid the creation of beizer modifiers, and by default make all clicks SYMM nodes and when you press for example alt key the node is cusp. What we think about this feature? Its the mode i think to use whith the next project B-Spline. The other think can do is retain the spiro pen tool more similar to normal beizer pen, like now, but whith a little effort -work comented in code-, we can make extend the spiro redraw when dragging the last beizer modifier. However the installer registers all files and uninstall only those (but also possibly changed files) files being installed. Bug in PDF+LaTeX, how can I send a patch?

Dear all, I found a small bug in the PDF+LaTeX export module. In the generated tex-file that contains the object placement information for latex a few comment character at line ends are missing. This causes some funny misalignment effects if the final pdf with superimposed text is wrapped into other latex-command. Sometimes LaTeX requires to know where a line ends, otherwise undesired spacing is created. We have identified the lines with missing comment characters '%' here: http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/82080/pictures-from-inkscapes-pdflat… and I would not mind to fix this myself, but I can not find where the PDF+LaTeX module is located in the inkscape branch. Dear all, On Units: After some digging I found that Inkscape uses a 90dpi setting internally for everything. It finally explains the insane precision to me. Now that's fine with me, but it would be really handy if you could set your own preferences. As a user of metrics it really is mindnumbing to have to work with 3.543307 px per mm. I'd much rather would set that to 10 or 100 for instance so I can more easily work from px units into mm and vice versa. I guess that for those that use their feet to do measurements 90dpi makes more sense though they must have some trouble when it comes to fractions of Inches (what pinky's?). If I want to design something in metrics and I get all those fractioned numbers in my files, it makes it a tad difficult to edit it by hand or script. Especially the latter is rather important for me. So the question here is,.. is it humanly possible to create a setting of your units and their conversion to px so the whole SVG document starts using those unit settings? If this is set in some script, where can I find the script and wouldn't it be great if that could be turned into a user settings config script that is editable from Inkscape. I'd be happy to make an interface for it as an extension as I think even I could do that with my limited skills in programming. I bet it all comes down to getting Inkscape to recognise these new settings at runtime, but restarting the application after changing the settings might be an option (Alert: restart Inkscape to use your new settings). I love Inkscape and its functionality for web design, but I think making it more flexible with unit settings might make it really useful for those that want to organise their whole work flow including print with it. On SVGDOM and Pyhton: Can one access the SVGDOM from python like you do from javascript? Using getAttributeNS etc.? If so, I'd like to try write some extensions. On the topic of the Inkscape UI re-design: If anything I'd love to see a UI that would be completely configurable like the one in Coreldraw. I also like the Gimp where UI objects and canvas are separated. Though it would be nice if there was some way to set a Z order in those as you often move new windows over UI objects and thus hiding them. Some UI object manager could be useful in that regard. Alternatively I would suggest making the canvas UI have a set position in the window and scale it when you open a docker. Now the part of the drawing get's hidden that often holds the objects you need the docker for, making more clicks. Using the GIMP format it might be possible to dock over the right side of the canvas window edge and like wise for tools to move them to the left side over the windows edge. This should be an OPTION as not everyone has a screen estate of 1920x1600 where this method would really make sense. It would defy some UI design adagia no doubt, but the movements would be a logical extension of the ones you are already making. Hi all, "SP_ACTIVE_DOCUMENT" or equivalently "inkscape_active_document" uses the current active desktop to find out which document is active. So SP_ACTIVE_DOCUMENT will not work if there is no GUI (cmdline Inkscape), and will return NULL. To allow one to call SP_ACTIVE_DOCUMENT to obtain the SPDocument, I am proposing to 'fall back' to take the first listed document in the Inkscape instance if desktop==NULL. In inkscape.cpp: SPDocument * inkscape_active_document (void) { if (SP_ACTIVE_DESKTOP) { return sp_desktop_document (SP_ACTIVE_DESKTOP); } else if (!inkscape->document_set.empty()) { return document_set.begin()->first; } return NULL; } I know we should move away from SP_ACTIVE_DOCUMENT and friends, but let's do the proposed change for sake of getting functionality now instead of over 5 years. ;-) It is related to fixing r11804 [1] to work from the cmdline. Changes in cairo >= 1.12.4 affect Inkscape stable and trunk

Cairo 1.12.4 introduced changes which affect Inkscape stable and trunk. Later releases (1.12.6, 1.12.8) addressed some of them for now, but not all: Outline view mode doesn't display any visible outlines at all [1], even with latest cairo 1.12.8 (released today). feComposite : how to deal with alpha ?

Hi, Some days ago, Jasper van de Gronde asked me if I still got problem with negative values in feComposite. He pointed that I forgot about the alpha value (becoming zero) https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1044989 So I reworked my filters using his clever trick so that alpha won't reach 0 (except I used feColorMatrix instead of feComponentTransfer) And once again I'm stuck. I try to redo the exclusion filter in photoshop using feComposite For two layers A (=sourceImage) and B (=backgroundImage) with opacities = 1, formula is supposed to be A+B - 2AB. As feComposite (stupidly IMO) computes not only rgb channels but the alpha too I need to get rid of the alpha channel (either in earlier or later stages) until now I failed. What I'd expected rgb(1,0,0.5, x) exclusion rgb(0,1,0.5, y) should be rgb(1,1,0.5, 1) r:1 + 0 - 2 (1*0) = 1 g:0 + 1 - 2 (0*1) = 1 b:0.5+0.5 - 2 (0.5*0.5) = 0.5 problem is the alpha coz 1 + 1 - 2(1*1) = 0 I tried the 2 following solutions solution 1: dealing later with alpha => set alpha to 1 when everything is done. feComposite k=(-2;1;1;_) followed by colorMatrix 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 <= identity for rgb 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 <= reset alpha to 1.0 whatever it could've been before this doesn't work, the result is full black solution 2: dealing earlier with alpha => set alpha so that it is 1 and not 0 after composition (=set it to 0 before the feComposite) pass sourceimage through the following colormatrix to remove the alpha 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 <= identity for rgb 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 <= reset alpha to 0 run this + backgrounImage in feComposite k=(-2;1;1;_) with this I'd expected the alpha to be ok because 0 + 1 - 2 (1*0) = 1. but this doesn't work either (fully transparent ?) Clippath and Masks

Dear all, I was wondering if it wouldn't be useful to change the way clippath and masks are created. Now the object used to create the clippath, gets transformed into a clippath and placed in the defs. However, very often I'd have to create a copy of this very object, move it down in Z-order and the use the original object to clip. Wouldn't it be easier to move a copy of the orginal to the defs as clippath and leave the original where it is? For masked area's it makes more sense to destroy the orignal, but even there I feel maintaining the original could be useful as those shapes are often used for dropshadows (at least that's what I use them for). Releasing the clip or mask would then still be rendering the same result as now, the only change is creating a new idea for the clippath by adding "c_" or "m_" in front of the ID of the copy. Something annoying with new sliders and filters

While the new sliders could be smart they are also annoying when used on some filters like Gaussian Blur when a wide range of variation is allowed (this is the case for some filters also suited for high resolution images like for example the new custom filter "Drawing"). The problem is when you try to click on numerical values because then often the slider instantly increase up to the highest value (like if you drag it to this value) instead of giving you precise control on the numerics. And in these cases often if you type Ctrl+Z before the filter is completely applied Inkscape crashes. It make working with some nice filters somewhat hasardous and I am sure discouraging for the beginners in this area. ivan

display scale factor

Recently, I wanted to use Inkscape to draw a floor plan for a large house. For this, I needed to use a grid specified in feet and inches. I found that in order to fit the whole drawing on the screen at once, I had to set the zoom factor to 3% or less, which was inconvenient. It seems that for some reason you cannot set a zoom factor of less than 1%, so if the building were even three times larger, there would be no way to view it all at once, if you used the correct units to draw it. It seems that I'm not the only person having this problem: http://inkscape-forum.andreas-s.net/topic/1209992 The suggested solution is to scale your drawing in "px" units, and then apply a mental scale factor to get the real dimensions. Of course you COULD do that, but why should you have to? Why can't Inkscape accommodate whatever units, dimensions, and scales are appropriate for the task at hand? My first solution was as follows. The inch and foot units are defined in the Inkscape config file "/usr/share/inkscape/ui/units.txt", or possibly "/usr/share/inkscape/ui/units.xml". I'm not sure which of these files is supposed to be normative; why are there two of them? # name plural abbr type factor PRI description inch inches in LINEAR 90.0 N Inches (90 px/in) foot feet ft LINEAR 1080 N Feet (12 in/ft) I added the following units, which are defined to be 1/360 of the usual ones: x-inch x-inches xin LINEAR 0.25 N X-Inches (0.25 px/xin) x-foot x-feet xft LINEAR 3 N X-Feet (12 xin/xft) Inkscape then recognizes these new units for the "Default units" and "Page Size" options, and for the "Transform" dialog. It DOES NOT recognize them for the object dimension boxes along the top of the canvas, and when the drawing's default unit is set to "xft", the rulers are graduated in "px" units. I then tried adding the same definitions to the "units.xml" file: <unit type="LINEAR" pri="n"> <name>x-inch</name> <plural>x-inches</plural> <abbr>xin</abbr> <factor>0.25</factor> <description>X-Inches (0.25 px/xin)</description> </unit> <unit type="LINEAR" pri="n"> <name>x-foot</name> <plural>x-feet</plural> <abbr>xft</abbr> <factor>3</factor> <description>X-Feet (12 xin/xft)</description> </unit> This did not appear to have any further effect. It seems rather silly that for some purposes, the unit definitions would be read at runtime from a config file, while for other purposes, they would be compiled into the program binary, but that appears to be how it currently works. I suppose I could fix this so that all the unit definitions were read from a single config file at runtime, and then define corresponding metric x-units as 1/100 of the usual ones, but that would be kind of pointless. People who want to draw cells, or integrated circuits, or molecules, would have to define y-micrometres, y-nanometres, and y-angstroms, as a million times bigger than the standard units, because it turns out that the maximum zoom factor you can apply is 25600%, or 256. (It's pretty silly to have to write 256 as "25600%", but apparently you do have to.) There is a much better solution, which is illustrated by the attached image "scale.png". This is intended as an addition to the current "Document Properties/Page" config window. It specifies the scale at which the drawing will be displayed on the physical screen, as a ratio between real dimensions on the screen, and the declared dimensions of the drawing. This does not replace the current "Zoom" option in the "View" menu or the box in the lower right corner of the main window. It is simply multiplied together with that setting, so if the zoom factor is set to "1:1" or "100%", the specified display scale factor is what you get. The intention is that the display scale factor will be set once, to an appropriate value for the drawing, while the zoom factor will be changed frequently while working. The display scale factor is specified as a ratio between two values, each of which consists of a decimal number and a unit chosen from a selection list. The available units are those read from the units.{txt,xml} file, with the addition of "width" and "height". These two units will refer to the physical screen dimensions, and the declared page size for the drawing. You can therefore specify that the normal display scale is such that the width of the drawing is the width of the screen (or half that, or twice that). This is likely to be useful, because often the X server does not have an accurate idea of the physical screen dimensions, but it always knows the size in pixels. It seems that this feature should be fairly simple to implement, for someone familiar with the Inkscape code. It only requires four additional widgets for the Document Properties window, for this setting to be saved and read from the SVG file, and for the resulting value to be multiplied with the existing zoom factor wherever that appears. Note the following related feature request, rated as "Priority: High": https://blueprints.launchpad.net/inkscape/+spec/real-units Bob wants to draw a house plan in feet and inches, but still print it on a letter-sized paper. (one idea: different layers can have different scales: e.g. border layer is actual size, house layer is 1 in. = 8 ft.) I would point out that the SVG specification does not prescribe any particular ratio between "px" drawing units and actual physical lengths. (It certainly DOES NOT specify that 90 px = 1 inch, as Inkscape currently assumes [units.txt]; this ratio is only mentioned as "for example".) http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG/coords.html#Units I suggest that for Inkscape, "px" be considered to be equivalent to the specified "Default unit" from the Document Properties window. If the default unit is metres, or whatever, then that's what "px" means, for that document, but no other. I don't see how this is inconsistent with the SVG specification. Only slightly less strange is this: degree degrees deg RADIAL 1.00 Y Degrees The natural base unit for rotations (if not radians) is one whole rotation, the identity operation, analogous to multiplication by one. These definitions necessarily imply that there must be inverse conversion factors of "100" and "360" hard-wired into the Inkscape code somewhere. But why should that be? The natural place for such conversion factors is this same "units.txt" definition file; that's what it's FOR. In this regard, it would be helpful if whatever piece of code is responsible for reading these definitions were (trivially) extended to handle ratios; then a degree could be defined as "1/360", rather than "0.002777777". Then, if someone wants to specify angles in milliradians, for some reason, they can define that as "1/6283.185", rather than "0.05729578", as is currently necessary. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angle#Units Similarly, if someone is working on some tiling problem and wants to scale things by multiples of 1/64, rather than 1/100, they can call that a "perfoo", and define it as "1/64", instead of "1.5625", as currently necessary. Another thing that would be useful for this file is to have some notation for "the n-th root of x"; for example, "2\4" could mean "the fourth root of two", which might otherwise be written as "2^(1/4)". Currently, the "+" and "-" keys zoom the display by a factor of 2^(1/2) (usually called "square root of two", 1.414214), while the up and down arrows next to the zoom factor box change it by almost, but not quite, 2^(1/10) ("tenth root of two", 1.071773). If there were some convenient notation for specifying geometric roots in the "units.txt" file, these zoom factors might be made configurable, and they could also be used in the "Transform" dialog for scaling objects. -- Ian Bruce

Would some GIMP developers like to do the same for other Mac Gtk projects such as Inkscape <http://inkscape.org/> or GnuCash <http://www.gnucash.org/>? Problem export to png in spanish version

Hi everybody When I try export to png a file, and the name have spanish letters like "ñ" or accent like in this word "camión" the name change in other form. For example Cataluña change as CataluÃ±a. The other problem is, when I try import this file in the same folder nothing happens. If I want export the file I need put this file in other folder. Color names shown when hovering a swatch color

Hi, I'm the translator for the Spanish version of Inkscape and I just got an email from a user asking why the names of the colours in the swatches weren't translated. I didn't know what he was talking about so I checked and found out that when hovering over a color in the swatch at the bottom of the Inkscape window a tooltip is shown in the status bar with the name of the colour that's in the .gpl file. Just out of curiosity: could it be a feature to add in the future, I mean the translation of the colours? Filter to background image, Is that a normal behaviour ?

See the sample file : Import a bitmap Draw a shape and put it behind the bitmap Apply a filter to the bitmap with a Composite "In" connected to Background image Group bitmap and shape Add a new shape behind this group (separated from the group). At first time you see the filter applied to the group only. But if you refresh the screen (moving anything or panning) then the filter applies also to the last shape drawn behind the group. However if you make a bitmap copy or if you export to bitmap the shape behind isn't shown. (n.b. I added an outer shadow inside the filter in order to enhance the weirdiness.) To my sense the shape added after grouping should not inherit the filter effect. But I don't know how it is specified in SVG ivan

I am sorry, I know the question is vague. But, I am new to inkscape development and owing very little in-code commenting and guiding sections, the project seems to intimidating and big to understand by sheer hit-and-trial. Till now I have figured out this: 1.) src\dialog contains all dialog boxes' codes. I happen to have fixed a bug recently, Bug-773228. during the course to figure it out, I understood "dialog" contents. 2.) Your direction tells me, "display" is handling the rendering part. 3.) The "widget" directory happens to handle basic functionality types land tools. I really don't know what I need right now, but I was looking for a general understanding of how the code handles what to render on the canvas and then save it there and still enable editing. Maybe you mean, the code is abstracted onto Cairo's code, so we need not get behind the curtain. If that being the case, I would like to know, is there any general source for me understand these workings ? Select file to save to defaults to UPPERCASE

margin when exporting to pdf

Hi all, When I export to PDF, I generally use "area is drawing", (that has now been renamed to "exported object's size" but should be "selected object's size" I believe, or in case nothing is selected "drawing size" or something that current users will recognize). To create a little bit of breathing room for the drawing, I would like to add a little margin to the area of the drawing. Does this make sense to you to add to the export options? "Extra margin: 10 px" or whatever unit. Cheers, Johan

Thanks Johan. There are another posibility, is to calculate the spiro line in function of 2 vars, position and time, instead now is in every movement. The optional show of spiro could be another posibility but first test this option. The spiro calculation is a very big step to me now. Exporting or rasterizing clip or mask areas ?

Save window geometry options in preferences

Hi, I have been working with Inkscape in the past on a spare-time single-user basis. Now I started to look into using it for producing graphics in a collaborative environment and I ran into some problems. I'm looking at SVG because it is a standardized and flexible format. More to the point, it is text-based, which makes it so much easier to work with in terms of version control and simultaneous editing. The following discussion concerns Inkscape 0.48 on Windows. I noticed that my window layout, among other things, is being saved by default to the Inkscape SVG file. As, this is not a good thing when collaborating with other people, because everyone will mess up each others environment, I tried to turn it off in the Preferences. Then I couldn't get the "Windows -> Remember and use last window's geometry" option to work. When I turned it on, the window layout was still being saved to (and loaded from) the SVG file. Only when I choose the "Don't save the window geometry" option was the saving omitted from the file. This seems like a bug, and I couldn't find it in the issue tracker. I would like to discuss some solutions. One alternative is of course to make the current intended behavior work. This means that the "Remember and use last window's geometry" option should only save window layout info to user preferences, not to the file. An alternative that I think makes more sense is to still save the layout along with each file (because different projects motivates different layouts), but to save them in a separate user settings file. So if I saved my foo.svg I would also get a foo.svg.user, or something similar. Actually I think all the attributes in the sodipodi:namedview tag could be moved out from the SVG to the user settings file, because they are all related to the work environment, and would differ from user to user. The benefit of having two files is that the user file can be excluded from version control and be kept locally for each user, while only committing changes to the actual SVG image. Also, at the moment when using the option to save layout to the SVG file, changes to the layout does not mark the file as dirty. If I just change the window layout and press Save, nothing will be saved. I have to modify an object to make the file save-able for the layout to be saved. What do you guys think? Hi. Im starting whith a branch for made B-Splines in inkscape. I have a problem compiling effects-cpp whith the "-" symbol. I check another Live Effects whith the same problem but im not sure about what is better. The name of the lpe is "B-Spline" but i want to ask whats better use 2 kinds of name (ex- "B-Spline" && "B_Spline") or use another name like "B Spline" && "B_Spline" or "BSpline" && "BSpline". Its a basic cuestion but i want to start ok. Finaly the cuestion are: What is better? * BSpline * B-Spline -problem compiling * B Spline Thanks and sorry for my bad english.

The name of the lpe is "B-Spline" but i want to ask whats better use 2 kinds of name (ex- "B-Spline" && "B_Spline") or use another name like "B Spline" && "B_Spline" or "BSpline" && "BSpline". It shouldn't. It's uneccesary to compute any blur stage at all. You'll ask why the hell do you add unnecessary stages ? When I design filter I often ask myself "what will it looks like if I disconnect these block of 5 primitives " As adding primitive is very slow with the current interface (*) I don't remove the block but I only disconnect it. As time goes by there are more and more dead blocks and I sometimes forget to remove them. Compiling on Windows 7 x64

Hello, Unfortunately, there is some problem with the build file or something wrong with the inkscape.exe. I have tried compiling on another machine on Windows 7 x64 only to face the same problem. The problem is: the build process completes successfully without errors but the inkscape.exe runs for a few seconds (seen in the task manager) and then quits. No windows opening, no send error report messages. Just a 'inkscape.exe' process in the task manager. Compiled by following the below page word to word: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Compiling_Inkscape_on_Windows Compiler: TDM-GCC 4.7.1 Mingw32 bit edition and not the experimental 32 cum 64 bit one. I am new to development and can't seem to debug the .exe properly using gdb.exe. Please, can someone look into this. -- Arshdeep Singh

Hi, I think I'll be a little bit off topic but I don't know where to ask (my question about svg on inkscapeforum are left unanswered) Can someone point me to reference papers (or friendly forum) about coefficients in FeColorMatrix, Fecomposite ? Something that could answer the following questions : What are safe values ? For exemple inkscape UI allows x10 for k1,k2,k3,k4 in FeComposite, can I push to 255 ? 256 ? 1000000 ? I don't see anything in SVG spec about max values for those coeffs. What about neg values ? When does clipping occur ? Particularly for k4. What is the effect of a <100% opacity source or dest ? (On clipping for exemple) I try to port svg2 PorterDuff operations in svg 1 and I often get strange results (to me) with inkscape. Is there some known bugs in rendering fecomposite with neg values in inkscape ? Thx. V. Bonus question : why is inkscape so slow at rendering filters ? ;)

Hello I committed the rendering cache work in revision 10579 of trunk. If you encounter serious problems, you can turn off caching completely by defining the environment variable _INKSCAPE_DISABLE_CACHE. For example, run inkscape as: $ _INKSCAPE_DISABLE_CACHE=1 inkscape By default, each drawing will use up to 64 MB of memory for rendering data. It can be set in the "Rendering" page of the preferences (renamed from "Filters"). As usual, problem reports are welcome. Regards, Krzysztof

Report from the GSOC mentor's conference

Hi all, I have just gotten back from attending the Google Summer of Code (GSoc) mentor's meeting at Google's headquarters. It was quite interesting to here about other groups experiences with the program. My major conclusion from attending the conference is that Inkscape is not taking full advantage of the GSoC program. Almost everybody at the conference knew about and used Inkscape. This is in contrast to many of the other groups that I had never heard of. Given our popularity, our group of core developers seems very small. I thinks that this is perhaps why we are under-performing in GSoC; we just don't have the people to do a good job of preparing for the program. Here are some things I picked up: * Recruitment: We should be starting now! Most successful students have already had some significant experience with the software they will work on. Our two-patch rule is a good step in this direction but is probably not enough. * Application: We should have an application form with questions that test passion and competence. Here are some sample questions from other groups: - What computer do you use? - What editor do you use? - What code have you written? - Do you use IRC, mailing lists? - Do you have a mentor in mind? Have you contacted them? - Provide a time line for your work. - How well do you know Inkscape? Include a drawing you have made. - What vacations/exams will overlap with the GSOC period? Indirect questions work best. The "Why do you want to work for us?" questions aren't very useful. The application should test the ability to read and follow instructions. * Coding period: Require frequent and public discussions. Public discussions work best as then there are multiple people who can answer questions. Some groups have two mentors for each project. This is especially helpful when time-zone issues make communication difficult. Require frequent commits. It is important to gauge a student's progress as well as insure the quality of the code. Reverting devlibs updates

I've just reverted the changes in Inkscape revision 11820 and uncommitted the devlibs r36 (the new stable revision is thus r35). Build on Windows, .exe not running

I followed the instructions to build inkscape on Windows (in my case Windows 7 Home). The build process was successful.The 'inkscape' folder formed in the repo directory contains the .exe (executable) inkscape.exe, which fails to run despite the build process finishing without errors. The busy sandtimer cursor shows but no application is launched. Even the task manager does not show any process of the name inkscape during the time the sandtimer shows. Question: a.) Is it necessary to make an installer to be able to run the inkscape application ? b.)If not the above case, has anyone faced such a situation ? Thanks. -- demicoder

I have been working on "extrapolate by arcs matching path curvature", but I think it will take me too long to make that work reliably before release. There are still too many bumps along that road... GtkHandleBox deprecated

Hi All, The GtkHandleBox widget is deprecated since GTK+ 3.4 and will eventually be removed completely. We currently use it to provide "tear-off" toolboxes, so we'll eventually have to rework our code somehow. Some possible solutions: 1. Get rid of "tear-off" functionality completely, and just have fixed toolboxes... probably the easiest option! 2. Switch to using GDL and putting all toolboxes into a dockable dialog. 3. "Adopt" the GtkHandleBox code and maintain a fork of it (as we did with GtkRuler) 4. Something radical, new and exciting..!? In any case, this is probably not something we want to do for Inkscape 0.49 because it involves a major reworking of a prominent UI feature! Any thoughts? Alex

Hi, I've just updated the gtkmm stack in the win32 devlibs with the following libs: * pangomm-2.28.4 * glibmm-2.28.2 * atkmm-2.22.6 * gtkmm-2.24.2 Additionally, the build.xml file needed to be updated so that Inkscape can compile with gtkmm 2.24. Narrow/Condensed fonts, font-stretch, any real utility?

SVG style has a font-stretch parameter, however, as near as I can tell it does not do anything. Set it to Normal or Condensed and nothing changes, for either "Arial" or "Arial Narrow". When a condensed font (Arial Narrow) is specified font-stretch says "Normal" even though the font used is actually condensed. Just to make life really miserable, FontConfig matches "Arial Narrow" on linux to "DejaSans", it only gives "DejaVuSansCondensed" if the font name used is "Arial Narrow:width=75" or "Arial:width=75". Near as I can tell Inkscape does not pick up from the font name alone that "Arial Narrow" is a condensed font. It is possible to force the issue by editing the SVG to font-family:Arial Narrow:width=75; in style, in which font-stretch will be set to Condensed. However on linux it is of little use because both of the Deja fonts are so much wider than "Arial Narrow" that the rendered text invariably overruns whatever text follows it. (This was with separate <text> sections, imported from an EMF file. If the pieces are put together with sequential <tspan>s then the text shifts around, but it does not overlap.) Copying the Arial Narrow file ARIALN.TTF from a Windows system to the linux font directory let Inkscape render text in that font at the proper size, but this isn't a general solution since it isn't a "free" font. Other SVG viewers (ie, Firefox) also seem to be mostly "miss" when it comes to rendering condensed/font-stretch SVG. What's the consensus - is this style parameter supposed to do more, in particular, emulate somehow a narrow or wide font from the base font? Is it best to just avoid condensed fonts altogether? Font Narrow, Condensed etc.

David, I've been a graphics designer since 1994 using a plethora of software for graphics design. My guess is that this styling parameter is related to the use of SVG fonts, rather than ttf, ott, woff or type1. Most of the latter have such a wide variety of badly characterized font sets, that you can negate the setting. During all my years a s a designer I certainly never let such settings decide what font to use and most of the time a condensed or narrow letter is defined in a special font, doing only that, but often in italic and bold as well as normal. For SVG fonts however, it would make sense, as you have much more control over SVG fonts than over any of the others through the SVG interpreter implementation. As SVG fonts are not really all that supported (Mozilla stubbornly refuses to implement even SVG fonts Tiny for whatever reason), the style setting wont have much use at this moment. I don't think Inkscape should try to support it at this time within its current tool set. I'd much rather have a limited support of SVG fonts for that matter, so designers can finally make their show cases to send to those MF's at Mozilla and press them to finally support the SVG standard. GTK+ 3 in devlibs?

Hi All, Is there a way of adding GTK+ 3 (and compatible libs) in Devlibs without breaking GTK+ 2 compatibility? As far as I know, there isn't a way of testing GTK+ 3 experimental builds in Windows. Presumably, DLLs have some sort of equivalent to SO-naming to allow multiple ABI-incompatible versions of a library to be provided? Cheers, AV

removing/adding childs in _build(...)

Hi all, For backwards compatibility with old-style guides, we want to convert the old-style guides to new-style in sp_namedview_build. Removing the old-style guides from XML and adding new ones works fine, however, this is not represented at all in the SPObject tree. After removing the old-style guides, the SPObjects are still in memory and hooked up to namedview. Also, adding new guides to XML does not create SPObjects belonging to them. This all works fine outside sp_namedview_build (the mechanism is used in hundreds of places in the code), but for some reason does not work within sp_namedview_build. Is that expected behavior? Hi, I hope it's ok to post the following test case to get your opinion. It's about filter/arithmetic. I don't get the same result in inkscape and in squiggle (and for me both look wrong) final filter in inkscape (0.48.3) "does nothing" the result looks 99% like the initial background squiggle is better you see the diagonal but not all pixels are black I expected every pixel at the top right above the diagonal in final image would be black (as in the included png) because in the top right r image (=g image =b image) > r background so lighter (image,background) = image so k2 * lighter (image,background) + k3 * image with k2 = 1 and k3 = -1 = lighter (image,background) - image = image - The "Help->About Inkscape" splash can be slow to render and has given some users the impression that Inkscape is therefore slow. One option is to replace the splash rendering with a static image in release builds. A downside of this is maintaining and adding a ~200Kb image to the package. (in any case, there is 0 chance of this being implemented anytime soon) Have the rest of you ever used Krita? Krita has two small boxes at the top that when clicked, each opens a window: - One to choose brush engines + edit options + test and create previews - One to access presets It sounds complicated, but it's actually quite easy to use: the presets system works very well, and the brush editing drop-down allows you to access complicated options quickly (then save them as easy-to-access presets). Although the editing window itself is large, it actually doesn't get in the way too much compared to say, Inkscape's fill and stroke tab, because you get it out of the way as soon as you've chosen. The way I see it, while brushes are at the heart of raster drawing programs, line-styles are (more or less) at the heart of illustration programs. I'd envision an interface more or less like Krita's, but with line styles: - A linestyle editing pane, with a list of different engines to the left and options to the right, and a test-pad at the bottom where you can also create previews for new presets - A presets drop-down - (maybe something with fills too, not sure though) The different engines would include: - Plain: normal, boring lines. It's is own "engine" because it's the most commonly used "style." - Dotted lines: here you'll have the dotted lines, markers etc. - Powerstrokes: everything that used to be in the Live Paths Effects pane will be moved here. There could be a visual editor to design and save line styles, basically a horizontal powerstroke to which you add and edit controls. Once you've saved it as a preset, the shape will then be mapped onto any powerstroke you draw. You could also choose "use current clipboard" to map the style of a currently copied powerstroke onto the editor, for saving. - Pattern along Path: Options include 1. Repeat styles 2. Whether to use the original colors of the object or use the fill color and 3. Whether to choose a pattern from a gallery, or use the clipboard. You can easily add new clips to said gallery (so you can make custom vines, chains, etc.), just like with Krita's pixel-brush brush-tip gallery. - Calligraphy maybe? - Line tiling? This is if Inkscape ever adds complex tiling along a line (see blueprint for tiling tool). - Render: specific live path effects, like stroke, etc. The presets drop-down will show all available presets, regardless of engine. It will have a search box for easy filtering. There'd be intuitive names like: - Graph full line single-arrow - Graph dotted line double-arrow - Powerstroke decreasing - Powerstroke increasing - Powerstroke sharp edges etc. (want a graph connector? Type "Gr" and you'll already get the list of graph lines) The tools in the left pane would be separated into line drawing tools (that apply the selected engine) and other tools. You can choose whether you want shape tools to use "plain lines" by default or use the chosen line style engine. To make the whole system even easier to use, the different engines would require more on-canvas editing options. For example, the purple diamond used for powerstrokes right now could be extended to Pattern Along Path to create variations in the sizes of the patterns. If on- canvas editing is too complicated, the editor pane at least could be used to specify and preview the size of the patterns used. Hey All, SF.net is upgrading their site and all projects. I wanted to give a heads up that I've initiated the transition for us and we are in their queue. Hopefully this will not negatively impact our usage of SF, but, it is something they're going to do to all projects that they host. I apologize in advance that they will be notifying everyone with commit access of code access changes, and I'm sorry if they send other emails to everyone else. Hopefully this will all be for the good in the end, as it's going to be mandatory. Cheers, Josh

According to the comment, if a an existing file was saved with the 'Show Border' option unchecked in Document Properties, this saved preference is not reflected when the document is reopened after being saved/closed ? If yes, that is the problem, the saved preference seems to be reflected before/after saving and opening. Also, the global settings for a new drawing is also not disturbed i.e. if I unchecked the 'Show Border' option in a drawing , then saved it, then opened a new drawing, the 'Show Border' is checked. Note:Everywhere above, 'Show Border' being checked implies correct behavior in the document. This behavior has been verified. -- demicoder

Frosting up

Hey all, Alright... according to the proposed release plan, we are arriving at Frost today. Frost will have us achieve: Most development complete. Release Notes should be >90% filled in. Need to post inkscape-0.49-alpha.tar.gz Here is a total list of things that are milestoned for 0.49 which are still open: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bugs?field.searchtext=&orderby=-import… Note: Not all of those are necessary, and in fact, some will have the milestone dropped (e.g. "Inverted ruler co-ordinate system"). Any help at determining the unachievable or otherwise unlikely to be tackled reports is always appreciated. Does anyone have any outstanding feature work that they'd like to see included? I know David Mathog has done a lot of EMF related work which needs further testing. Is there anything else that is in a relatively mature state that we might want to look at? I will give a followup email early next week after I've had a chance to create a list of blockers and issues which must be addressed. How does ptr_shared work / share_string memory leak

Dear all After recent bug reports ([1] and [2]) I had a look on the memory leak associated with the usage of share_string. share_string occupies some memory, but it apparently can afterwards never be released. Individual leaks are small, but there are many and the total memory leaked my quickly sum up. I have been studying the code, but I'm not able to figure out how ptr_shared works. So I was wondering if someone could explain how ptr_shared works and if this explanation could be added to the source code in doxygen comments (and even the wiki?). Related to this question, why do we need a shared pointer system at all? To solve the memory leak issue, I was thinking of replacing all calls to share_string with the usage of Glib::ustring (either directly or via ptr_shared). Is this a good idea or are there better options. Thanks for the suggestions. Regards K. Sample file request: R->L and T->B languages, in a couple of file formats

It would be a big help to me in getting the EMF sections of the code right if some developers who uses an R->L language and a T->B language could prepare a set of samples similar to the files listed below. Then email them to me. But before actually starting work on this please post back to the list first saying you will be doing this, so only one person needs do this for each language. Samples are only required for one R->L and one T->B language. These samples don't need to be a 1:1 translation from English - I probably won't be able to make any sense of what they say anyway, but it is important that the starting document edited normally in PowerPoint in whichever language you use, since that will likely affect what the emf file will look like internally. Left,center,right justification will look more or less the same (at a distance) in a R->L language. That is, the same parts of the screen are written, just different characters. For a T->B language I believe Left justify slides to the top. The near collision of the text blocks at +45 and -45 degrees is intentional, please do that in the other languages too. The samples from other languages do not need to have the text in exactly the same positions as the English samples. The English language sample files were made as follows. 1. Compose the file in Powerpoint in a standard slide. Be sure to put a slide sized rectangle on the bottom or step (2), below , will not scale correctly: http://saf.bio.caltech.edu/PPT_G_P_I/#P2I_method Save the presentation as a *.ppt file. 2. In PowerPoint, in that slide window select all right click one selected object save as picture. (give it a name and use "Enhanced Windows Metafile" to create the *.emf file). 3. Take a screen shot of the PPT slide, or of the EMF in Windows Preview, and save as PNG to make the *png file. 4. The SVG in the example was constructed by hand so that text would be at least somewhat editable. EMF import was not used because the text ends up in many little pieces, ie: http://saf.bio.caltech.edu/PPT_G_P_I/#I2P_formatted_strings To make the SVG in Inkscape I suggest: format a 10 x 7.5" page, then import the *.png into it, align it to the page, and lock it. If the underlying rectangle was used in step (1) then the PNG will be exactly the right size. Then create a second layer above the first, enter text to match the underlying PNG. Easiest if the underlying text is black, and the upper layer is red. I used vertical kerning for super and subscripts, because it was not otherwise possible to match those character positions. When the overlay is done, remove the lower layer, change the text to black, save to make the *svg file. Thank you, David Mathog mathog@...1176... Hello. In the branch https://code.launchpad.net/~jabiertxof/inkscape/B-Spline whe develop spiro pen while drawing, as first part of the b-spline editing. You can check it and comment. Now i have a problem, i want to convert a node CUSP to SYMM or SMOOTH. I have the SPCurve -now drawing- and is in a function whith SPPenContext but the GEOM::POINT to change is not the last of the SPCurve (Is the penultimate). Any body can help me? Sorry for my bad english

Building .app on Mac OS X with Macports

I'm trying to build inkscape 0.48.2 as a Mac .app application using Macports. I'm on Mac OS X 10.7.3 with Xcode 4.2.1 and Macports python 2.7.2 with numpy and lxml. According to the wiki page [1], I should use the osx-app.sh shell script to create it. So I attempted to run the script as stated in the wiki but it did not work for me, saying that it wants the python modules directory to be specified. $ pwd /opt/local/var/macports/build/_opt_mports_trunk_dports_graphics_inkscape/inkscape/work/inkscape-0.48.2/packaging/macosx $ ./osx-app.sh -s -b /opt/local/var/macports/build/_opt_mports_trunk_dports_graphics_inkscape/inkscape/work/destroot/opt/local/bin/inkscape -p ../../Info.plist CREATE INKSCAPE APP BUNDLE Python modules directory not specified. Python modules can be downloaded from: http://inkscape.modevia.com/macosx-snap/Python-packages.dmg So I next attempted to specify the python directory. $ ./osx-app.sh -s -b /opt/local/var/macports/build/_opt_mports_trunk_dports_graphics_inkscape/inkscape/work/destroot/opt/local/bin/inkscape -p ../../Info.plist -py /opt/local/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/lib/python2.7/site-packages CREATE INKSCAPE APP BUNDLE Directory does not appear to contain the i386 and ppc python modules: /opt/local/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/lib/python2.7/site-packages Python modules can be downloaded from: http://inkscape.modevia.com/macosx-snap/Python-packages.dmg I tried the download link but that does not resolve.
