wmf import/export and uniconvertor

Hello, I saw a wmf_input.inx using uniconvertor so I created a corresponding wmf_output.inx as well :-) However in the code src/xml/rep-io.cpp there are some sections protected by #ifdef HAVE_LIBWMF that call sp_wmf_convert (localFilename). I have libwmf-dev installed on my computer (Ubuntu 8.10) On windows there is a system specific emf/wmf importer/exporter. Uniconvertor can not handle text for now. Questions: 1) is this code abandoned? I did not found any definition HAVE_LIBWMF using grep -R HAVE_LIBWMF * 2) How can we disable the uniconvertor extension on windows? Thx, Adib.

State of the Icons

Bug #312993 proposed the Tango set for Inkscape 0.47 https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/312993 This has already been discussed but nothing happened. The general consensus seemed to be that the majority wanted the default theme but that it needed to be fixed. The original Tango Icons didn't have much support, although an alternative version with toolbar icons similar than the defaults but "tangoified" had better luck. An improved version of the default set was presented in this list some time ago without much repercussion. Besides, the default set has been converted to a separated icons set but the work isn't finished yet and the possibility of use custom icons has gone. What's the current state of this? Is there a reason for not replacing the default set by the much improved version presented on the list? Would it be possible to commit the finished versions of both Tango (art libre) and Tango Colors icons in SVN? The reworked default theme, and both tango versions are complete and work fine with most of the GTK themes. They need improvements for very dark themes but it is possible that a new theme for that particular situation has to be created. In the bug report you can find the icons files and samples created by dopelover displaying the issues in dark themes. In my oppinion, every proposed set performs better than the current default. What do you think? Gez.

Hello I noticed that in the "Save as" dialog, when you save a new file, the fields order when you do TAB is: File Name Type Save Cancel Title So you more likely will hit "Save" before you get a chance to fill in "Title". I remember a discussion about this on IRC, and the goal of adding the Title field was that it shouldn't "get in the way" of the user, or something, even though the "Title" field is part of the SVG specification (or something like that) So I'm wondering... would it make a big difference to have the order: File Name Type Title Save Cancel For people using the mouse to go from field to field, it won't make a lot of difference (I think), but for those like me who use TAB in that dialog, it would (3 TAB instead of 5, but 4 TAB instead of 3 for save) Also, it's a "Save as" dialog, so if you change the File name or the Type, there are chances that you would also change Title maybe, but the current order makes it more likely that you hit "Save" first. The same comment applies to the "Save a copy..." dialog. Anyway, that's only a question - I'm curious about why the current order is as it is, that is all :-) What do you people think? Regards

Hi. I've been playing with Google Maps for a moment. Actually, only "visually" interesting things there seem to be: - placemarks, with choosable icons - polygons, with customizable style - fill color and opacity, border (stroke) color, opacity and width - lines (paths), customizable like polygon's stroke above All these may (or must) have names and descriptions; the latter may be plaintext or html ("rich text"). I assume these elements are a minimum to be done. I can handle that easily (I guess :-) ). How close to your expectations is this subset? Did I miss some essential features? Another thing: what is the expected resulting SVG if the input KML contains, say, just a placemark with name, description and point with coordinates? Is it going to be a placemark's image (icon) and a rectangle (or something) with the texts? Or is it going to involve some background graphics (terrain's map)? Greetings, Piotrek

Opacity is considered commonly as an extra property, and not part of the color. That's why several users think their colors look "pale" when they're actually semi-transparent. The alpha value is commonly misinterpreted as a "tint" value. People use it when they want to make the color lighter, not transparent. Of course you have the HSL sliders and you can do a sort of tinting raising the value of the L slider. But both opacity and tinting are commonly applied as transformations over the color, not coloring itself. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that they aren't related to the color mixing, but people usually tend to see them as some kind of post-processing over the color. For instance, they take a red swatch and want to have tints of that red swatch. They don't look for a pink swatch with the same hue than the red swatch. Opacity inheritance

In the bug report # 285966 (avoid inheriting transparency when it's set to 0) I commented about the problems of the style inheritance in new shapes. New users seem to be very confused by this feature, and in the particular case of creating a shape after setting a gradient (the style of the last stop is preserved, so the last style memorized is A=0) it leads to recurring bug reports because people don't get it and tend to think that there's something broken. I've been thinking about the inheritance of opacity and honestly, I find it rather annoying in most of the cases. At the moment is marked as a wishlist item, but I'm starting to think that it's probably an usability bug. I think that should be better to avoid opacity inheritance as default and make it optional via preferences (i.e.: preserving fill and stroke but not opacity unless the user select the proper option in the prefs). What do you think?

Improvements for ICC/CMYK Workflow

This is my GSoC application. Please, give me feedback so that I can improve it. *Project idea* My project proposal consists of a set of improvements in the user interface that would improve user workflow when dealing with CMYK color space and ICC color management. Last year I was invited (and received some funds) by Brazilian Government to participate in an event where a couple free software developers and some users of free software graphics applications such as GIMP and Inkscape had the oportunity to exchange ideas and brainstorm about issues related to printing. From these brainstorms I have gathered a set of issues that I believe are of high priority for the inkscape team. I propose that in my SoC project this year I would focus on these activities: - store CMYK color values in the SVG file using icc-color - create a default target device color profile option in the document properties dialog (color management tab) - automatically color transform the color palettes using the selected target device icc profile - automatically color transform the color picker widgets using the selected target device icc profile - brainstorm a way of properly displaying "out of gammut" colors in the user interface - implement "out of gamut" user interface - colors using an alternative color profile should be the exception case (thus, only this case would require the user to explicetely chose the icc profile in the CMS tab at the fill&stroke dialog). Other colors should automatically use the target device profile. JucaBlues

Please do all your refactoring commits before then. To refresh your memory, a refactoring freeze means: > no lib migrations, no rewriting and rearranging code "for general correctness", and no 2geom syncs "just in case" until the release. I realize this is all done for good reasons, but experience shows that each such wave of changes brings bugs that keep popping up long after the wave has passed. Couple of text bugs

I went to print a piece of text on a path last night and nothing appeared. Once the text was converted to paths itself it printed fine. Version 21051. Another, long-standing bug, is that text behaves strangely when aligning. I generally find that of several pieces of text the one used for "relative to" is fairly random; certainly the choice in the alignment menu is frequently ignored. I've not found a pattern yet - the object's ID does not seem to be the basis of the choice nor does the type of alignment (baseline, left, top etc) seem to matter. The bias property for feConvolveMatrix

The SVG standard defines a "bias" property for feConvolveMatrix to offset the result of the filter. It specifies that this value should simply be added to the result for each channel. Implicitly the standard defines that these are premultiplied color values, however, this seems to make little sense, as the bias has very little meaning without taking the alpha channel into account. The standard also says that one of the applications of a bias is "to have 0.5 gray value be the zero response of the filter", this seems to be directly contradictory with adding bias to the premultiplied values (as then the same bias could suddenly stand for white if alpha was 0.5). So, what to do? Batik doesn't seem to support bias!=0 at all, so there is also no precedent. I currently let feConvolveMatrix make bias relative to alpha.

Hi all, For some unknown reason, all lpes having theire own "addCanvasIndicators()" (namely lpe-knot and lpe-cpopyrotate) now crash inkscape whenever you try to edit with the node tool. Just in case someone is aware of some recent change in the code causing this, please make suggestions, it might save me some time trying to understand what is going on! ;-) Cheers, jfb.

Hi, Here is an interesting patch in the tracker: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/346681 "This is a .diff file containing code that allows Inkscape to generate spiral gradients, as well as conical or angular gradients as a degenerate case. It allows the user to create and edit these gradients with the gradient context (tool) and the Fill and Stroke dialog in the same manner as a Radial gradient. There's a pretty large amount of 0.46 bugs being reported again and again in launchpad, and most of them are fixed in SVN. I guess that stabilizing the SVN and fixing important bugs and regressions to release Inkscape 0.47 as soon as possible would have a significant impact (positive) in the reduction of duplicated bugs. I personally don't care if some filters, lpes or features don't make it. I'd prefer a stable 0.47 with the bugfixes and the enhancements that may be considered "stable". Even with its regressions and some high importance bugs, the SVN version is pretty stable and it has loads of improvements (snapping, pdf output, eraser, spiro, etc.) that would make 0.47 attractive enough, from the user pov. And that would help to close lots of fixed bugs for good. So +1 for the idea of starting the freezing and regressions hunt. Gez

GSoC 2009 - Project handling in the repository

Hey All, Due to concerns and issues voiced in the past, it seems like we should talk about how GSoC projects should be handled in our repository. A big concern is the impact on Trunk and if we want to release 0.47 with minimal pain this year. Given that I'm the hold-over release warden for 0.47, and that I have also taken on future release related duties from bryce... I'd like to see things work as smoothly as possible. What are some thoughts on what to do? Should we stick to the way we did it in the past and potentially introduce much more breakage in the near future? Branches on an as-needed basis? Perhaps just a GSoC2009 branch for all students work to be committed to? I could see the latter being beneficial to ease testing all their work with no harm to trunk the process. Additionally, it's a great way to learn about our "don't break trunk" rule... the students will be forced to commit responsibly as breaking it would hinder all other students too (which I would hope they'd be vocal yet diplomatic in handling). Any and all thoughts are welcome. Cheers, Josh

Now to the matter. I haven't got a clear idea what to do, I'm not even sure about the guidelines for this task nor have a complete feeling of the goal. On the other hand I have some chances to make a piece of valuable work here. The task was described as "likely XSLT". Fortunately I have the basic understanding of XML and XSLT (I've recently accomplished a subject at my university devoted to XML and XSLT, so I'm quite fresh with it). In addition, I got to like it and feel a need to deal more with such translations. The fact is, I don't know the "XML Schemas" and practical aspects of SVG and KML. I will need some time to get through their documentations. Anyway, both specifications are worth knowing, so I will gladly learn them. I guess the job may be considered as import and export respectively. Importing (KML to SVG) shall be relatively simple and with a small risk of an "out-of-time" defeat. The other direction (export) seems more hard and needing deeper considerations. Of course, the importing part might also need some "parameters" (options in import wizard?). As I am freaky/scarry of not meeting the deadline, I like to find a safe-feeling solution first. An example of such is making a little website for converting KML to SVG using for example Firefox built-in XSL processor (I've used this solution in my last XSLT project, although it didn't involve any SVG rendering). I have then made a silly and tiny web framework (using PHP + .htaccess + mod_rewrite) for passing parameters to the XSLT file (parameters are dynamically inserted into original file as lines with an xsl:param definition each). Thus I could make a small portal driven only by XSLT :-) As this solution is quite comfortable and "recent" for me, I believe "I can make it", and in the meantime we can optionally consider if I will be able to deal with Inkscape internals (that is what I don't know at all, so this may be more risky). That's it for a minimum. I'm waiting for your opinion and expectations. If you agree for solving this task via XSLT, I'm likely to success with it. Piotrekk

Hello I would like that some underused possibilities of svg:text to be exposed/implemented in textobject tool (http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG/text.html) 1) charwidth, to make user able to change the width of gliphs 2) letterspacing and wordspacing 3) higher and lower indexes by means of offsets 4) text-decoration: uderline, line-through 5) text-aligh by textwidth and 6) facilitate users with TeX-formulas input (Abiword guys already have this) What do you think about it? My name is Soren Berg and I wanted to propose a possible Google Summer of Code project and see what you guys think. I would like to use GSoC '09 to improve the scripting API of Inkscape. This is an area that has seen some major changes over the last few years in terms of extension support and verb passing but I still believe there is room for improvement. The extensions are very useful for making filters but don't (correct me if I'm wrong) really expose any of Inkscape's functionality. You need to use an entirely different set of tools to manipulate the XML data and pass it back. The verbs are very useful for batch processing and similar tasks, but the fact that none of them take any parameters or return results means that they are not ideal for scripting or otherwise interacting with Inkscape in a more in-depth fashion. I wrote a scripting console that exposed many Inkscape functions for programatically creating images and it was accepted for inclusion but it became harder and harder to support, largely because of the lack of any sort of API. It did show some very interesting benefits to controlling Inkscape programatically (like script-fu for the GIMP) though. I know there is some work going on with a Java based API but it seems to be mostly stubs right now. I could start working on this early as well since I have a job that wants to integrate software with Inkscape. What do you guys think? Obviously I haven't fleshed out my plans very much, and that is because I want to get some general feedback on the concept first. Thank you for reading, Soren Berg

Hello, No, I believe the actions are correct and the icons are swapped. The actions should remain in the same order as in 0.46, and as they are in r21009, that is: - align horizontally on the left - align vertically in second position. It would be ***very odd*** to change this order in 0.47. Please, can you check that? Failed to execute helper program in Windows Builds

Currently in the development builds editing an bitmap externally by right-clicking the image causes inkscape to return the following message: Failed to execute helper program: (Invalid Argument) Would it be possible to select gimp.exe itself rather than just gimp? Just calling gimp seems to be something associated with Linux. Scribus exhibits this same behavior, but you can navigate to the helper program itself and then everything works fine.

Disconnected Arabic letters on Mac OS X - Arabic support on Mac OS X is not working properly

Hi there, I tried to post on the same subject in the past, but it I didn't get any working suggestion/consideration back. I'm running version 0.46 on Mac OS X 10.4.11. When I write Arabic into the text tool I get a disconnected Arabic letters. It happens also if I copy a connected Arabic letters from outside Inkscape: when I copy the connected text it gets disconnected. I had a version that worked perfectly. I don't remember which one was it. But when I try to examine the past versions one by one, no one seems to work. It seems that there is something in the system that changed that is affecting the Arabic in Inkscape. I tried rolling back to a previous version of X Server and didn't work too. Any clues??? Krzysztof, Please know that anything Jon or Ted discuss is not as short sighted as you seem to think. I won't say that all ideas they have are perfect, but at the very least, they've probably put more thought into it than you're giving them credit for (and no offense, probably more time and thought than you have). I have to put forth that it seems like you are a little too quick with dismissing the input of others. Given that you have applied for SoC, I have to ask... will you be able to really take advice from a mentor as seriously as you should? Wiki main page & delete access

I already mentioned this here but I didn't receive an answer. Can I receive the credentials necessary to delete pages and edit the main page on the wiki? For example, the main page has a lot of links in WikiWords, which are pointless in MediaWiki, and it has links to pages that are outdated and no longer useful, even confusing. I'd like to fix that. gdl summer of code

Hi! Someone on #gnome-hackers pointed me that you will probably have a student working on gdl to split it out again as a library. While I really appreciate that work I would be even more happy if you could contribute this work upstream. Also gdl spent a rather unmaintained time development seems to speed up again now, mostly based on the work of Joel Halsworth from the Lumiera fame (www.lumiera.org). Patches and documentation improvements landed in trunk in the past weeks. I would like to avoid duplicated work here. Of course the ultimate long-time goal remains to push gdl to gtk+ but before it would be great if all project using it would use the version that ships with GNOME and constribute to this. Affine Transformations in Python

Hi, I' d like to ask if there is perhaps some sort of affine transformation library available to the Inkscape Python scripts? So far, I only found the file simpletransform.py, which is quite useful, but not very comprehensive. The transformation stuff already has excessive support in the Inkscape C++ code. Are there any Python bindings for that? Right now, I am primarily interested in getting pretty constructor functions for defining rotations and scaling, without having all the mathy matrix clutter in my code. Hello everyone, Upon reading Alexandre's post about submitting proposals ASAP, I fired off my idea. I would like to use this post to not only introduce myself, but to also share my proposal here. ~proposal~ My proposal for Inkscape and GsoC 09 deals exclusively with altering the existing typographic system in Inkscape. The three primary areas I wish to work on are kerning, tracking, and typeface organization. Kerning, the altering of spacing between a pair of letters to enhance aesthetic appeal, is implemented in Inkscape currently, but the existing system provides several hurdles to the designer. The first hurdle is the speed in which a designer can apply or remove kerning. The current approach using the arrow/alt combination is interesting, but inefficient if the designer needs to apply or remove massive amounts of kerning quickly. The second hurdle is that there is no visual record of how much kerning is applied to a specific area. This can be frustrating if the designer wants to keep track of the changes he/she has introduced. My solution to this first area is the implementation of a dropdown box in the toolbar that appears when the text tool is selected. This tool would remain unusable until the user placed their cursor in between two letters in a text area. When this condition was met however, the box would show the amount of kerning applied at the location of the cursor. Upon clicking the arrow on the dropdown box, a small menu would appear that listed several discrete steps of kerning which could be applied (-25, -10, 0, 10, 25, etc). The addition of this box alone would alleviate most of the problems stated above. The second issue that requires attention is the lack of a tracking system. Tracking is similar to kerning in that it adjusts the space in text. Unlike kerning however, tracking works with multiple words/sentences. Ellen Lupton gives a great example of what tracking is here http://www.papress.com/thinkingwithtype/text/tracking.htm. Since tracking is pretty similar to kerning, it could be implemented in a similar way with a similar dropdown box. The box for tracking would become enabled when a designer selected a group of words or the entire text box. The final issue deals with the organization of typefaces in Inkscape. More often than not, a designer has several hundred typefaces installed on their computers. Inkscape's current type selection box indepedently lists all variations of a specific typeface. An example of this would be the presence of Helvetica, Helvetica Semi Bold, Helvetica Black, etc. This current arrangement makes an incredibly long list that the designer needs to troll through in order to find the face they want to use. This could be alleviated by collapsing all of the different weights of a typeface into one designation (in the example I just gave, it would collapse to Helvetica). A small box could be placed next the typeface selection box which contained all of the different variants. This would make it incredibly easy to pick and choose what typeface variant one was searching for. I hope you find this as interesting as I do.

Ubuntu nightly builds

Hello all, So I've gotten most of the way on getting a nightly build setup in a Launchpad PPA. It builds for the current, the previous and the next release of Ubuntu. What I'm particularly happy about is the package is "inkscape-devel" so it can be parallel installed with a stable version of Inkscape. Speaking of gradients, just in case you need a bezier mesh math refresher mish mash (so to speak), I wrote one here: http://laxkit.sourceforge.net/html/lotsamath.html I made an svg approximation generator for bezier meshes, loosely based on Bulia's method, which works sort of ok in most cases. Bezier meshes can be made to be conical gradients, but the svg blur technique doesn't do so well for that configuration. Pdf, by the way, natively supports bezier patches, so if such things get in Inkscape, they can at least export naturally to pdf. Hi Inkscape developers I hope to participate in GSOC 2009 and have written my project proposal in the bottom of this message. I have (very) briefly outlined the idea in an email to Jon A. Cruz, and he did not seem dismissive to this idea ;) This has some overlap with existing blueprints in Launchpad, so this project could be complementing current ongoing efforts in the code base. It seems that the work has barely started yet, so i hope my work will speed up things in this regard. My project proposal is below, and i have signed up for GSOC 2009 (name: frederikf) but not submitted my proposal, since i wanted some feedback from you guys first. Best regards, Frederik ------- Project proposal ------- Name: Frederik Fabritius Project: Dynamic tints, tones and shades based on a named 'anchor' color Project proposal: The idea is to have named colors which objects can inherit as fill or stroke color, so when changing the color value of the named 'anchor' color, all objects inheriting it will change color accordingly. As well as inheriting the exact 'anchor' color it should also be possible to specify an object color as 'linked' a tint/tone/shade of the 'anchor' color. After having seen this in Xara and Adobe Illustrator i immediately thought that Inkscape was missing this feature. Cruz 2008-06-03: This sounds like an overlap of the named color stuff, Open SwatchBook, and what I've been calling "live colors" but are actually dynamic tints, tones and shades based on an 'anchor' color. I have briefly emailed with Jon A. Cruz about this proposal who has said he was just begun implementing part of the ground work for implementing named swatches. I was thinking that this GSOC project might offload/complement some of Jons work. I think the concepts could be extended by not only linking shade/tint of a color, but also looking into linking colors across the spectrum such as complementary/triad/analogous colors as explained here: http://www.tigercolor.com/color-lab/color-theory/color-theory-intro.htm I consider this extension to the concept, to be out of scope of the GSOC delivery. Final deliveries: A named swatches dialog A property editor dialog to edit the color in the swatch, which also allows one to specify a 'linked' tone/tint/shade to a named 'anchor' color in the swatch. These should support being stored in Jon's "Open Swatchbook", if it makes sense in the given timeframe. I know Jon has considered implementing an additional color picker, but i plan on limiting the delivery to support the current color pickers implemented in Inkscape and working out the details with the mentor associated for the project. Inkscape Questions When did you first hear about Inkscape? Have you used Inkscape before? If so, for what sorts of things? Ive used Inkscape mostly for illustrations for the past three years for student projects at my university. I have also used it for website mockups and for doing layouts for event invitations and the like. About Yourself I am currently writing my master's thesis at the Technical University of Denmark where i am writing audio processing on the GPU. I have a 2 week planned vacation where i was going to bring my laptop and work on the project as well. My main programming language is python, but have done various projects in C++, C# and java.

Inkscape logo license

I know it has already been discussed before, but I can't find any conclusion. We (me and Elisa) need to use the Inkscape logo in two contexts: . to create a customized logos for the inkscape-fr and planet Inkscape-fr websites; . in a book we're currently writing, adapted in our drawings. All of these uses need that the logo allows modifications, and the last one no commercial limitation. We plan to release our work very shortly and we really need to know what to do. Tutorial and .po(t) autobuilt

Hi, For some weeks now, I've been trying to setup an autobuilder for various inkscape docs (and translations). While the .po(t) process is quite fine (minus some rough edges, like errors report), I'm still unable to build the tutorials. I can't even compile correctly them on my machine, and I haven't yet found out the cause of these issue; saxon or java is throwing a NaN in a normal sum calculus... help is highly appreciate. The current result is at http://www.unstable.it/luca/inkscape/trunk/ The cronjob is not yet scheduled, as I don't like wasting cycles when the process is not correctly working. Open Clip Art Library Release 0.19 Announcement and OCAL10K Goal Exceeeded

March 31, 2009 - Release 0.19 of Open Clip Art Library (http://www.openclipart.org), containing over 12,000 high quality scalable vector graphics (SVG) files released into the public domain by over a 1000 artists, is now available for download and use. In celebration of this accomplishment, since OCAL��s last release happened in 2005, and March being 5th anniversary of the Open Clip Art Library (OCAL), the OCAL community set a goal to achieve 10,000 uploaded pieces of vector graphics. The project achieved this with the 10,000th submission from user Boobaloo who uploaded a graphic of an onion. The project congratulates Boobaloo for uploading the 10,000th upload. Also, project congratulates all artists who have uploaded in this anniversary OCAL10K sprint. The project congratulates Nicu who personally crossed the 500 clip art upload barrier and now has 696 pieces of clip art uploaded to the system. All efforts towards the OCAL10K goal helped boost the site��s registrations and focus on releasing monthly packages once more to make this project a flowing river of clip art uploads. Since all contributions to the project are released into the public domain via the Creative Commons Public Domain Dedication, anyone may use the Open Clip Art Library files for any use including collections, to make money, and to generate compositions. However, the community encourages anyone who uses the clip art to provide attribution back to the original clip art in the form of a link or to announce the use of the clip art in some form. GSoC 2009 project - lib2geom development

Hi all! After some talk with Nathan Hurst I decided to apply for GSoC also this year. I would like to go on with the development of lib2geom that as I can see is now almost completely integrated into Inkscape. So, before submitting my project proposal to google I would like to know your opinions! Kind Regards, Marco =======================PROPOSAL START============================ Name: Marco Cecchetti Project: lib2geom development Abstract Lib2geom has become the core geometric library of Inkscape and it is also an open source project on its own. My project aims to expand the library and give evidence of its skills through the implementation of ad hoc "toys": little interactive applications showing off the power of lib2geom. Moreover many of these toys could be suitable directly for live path effects. Goals (1) Complete the work on bezier clipping routines making them more robust, and implement more specialized intersection routines for the various curve types; (2) Adding support for more basic geometric shapes (triangle, regular polygon, ...) so making easier the development of educational and technical geometric tools. (3) Implementation of a new curve type (clothoid) to let 2geom supporting spiro tools into Inkscape; a clothoid toy showing off the feature of the implemented curve will be provided, too. (4) In case I have some time left after fulfilling the other goals I would like to implement a parallel version of some 2geom routine using a multi-thread library, and explore the possibility of exploiting vectorialized support (e.g. SSE2) provided by modern cpus. Details (1) Towards the end of my last year project I start developing routines that compute the intersection points and the collinear normals of two Bezier curves. Both these routines are based on the Bezier clipping technique as it is explained on Sederberg's book [1]. Though at 99% these routines work correctly there are still cases where they show some spurious behaviour. As they are really useful tools I think that spending some time in order to make them more roubust it is a worthwhile task. Moreover I would like to investigate the utility of implement specialized intersection routines for various curve tipes (bezier-conics), (conics-conics) (conics-line) and so on. This would save the time needed to convert them to symmetric power basis or to bernstein basis before computing the intersection and would make also the computation more robust by removing the possible approximation errors introduced by the conversion stage. (2) In order to simplify the implementation of technical drawing tools or the development of a geometric educational version of inkscape, I think that it is useful to have direct support in lib2geom for simple geometric objects and the availability of geometric construction methods. In my last year project I implemented several tools, such as (infinite) line, ray, circle, ellipse, arcs and I provided routines for making up parallel line, perpendicular line, angle bisector, circle by 3 points, ellipse by 5 points. Now I want to go on adding new geometric objects such as triangle, regular polygon, and the left conic sections, moreover I want to implement other construction methods such as circle by 2 points and tangent to a line, inscribed and circumscribed circle of a triangle and of a regular polygon, conic section by 5 points and so on. (3) A Clothoid, also known as Euler's spiral, is characterized by the property that its curvature varies linearly with the arc length. Because of this important property they are useful in the route design of highways and railways to achieve smooth transitions between lines. For the same reason they are also appreciated in the design of font types. I'll provide the Clothoid class with a complete implementation of all methods inherited by the abstract Curve class such as bounds computation, evaluation for a given parameter value, conversion to and from a s-power basis path, and so on. The Clothoid-Toy will provide the ability of interactively play with a clothoid curve by modifying the initial and the final clothoid arc points, set its length, watch the projection of an external point on the curve, and all other abilities that the Clothoid class will own. (4) Several 2geom routines such as the bezier clipping algorithm and the curve-curve distance computation will benefit from a parallel implementation. The trick is in partitioning the work in several tasks that can be executed by different threads managed by a task scheduler. All that can be achieved using a multi-thread library like the Intel Threading Building Blocks (released under the GPL license) or through the Boost.ThreadPool library still in active developement. Likewise exploiting a vectorialized instruction set such as SSE2 will allow us to parallelize the computation of large amount of data by producing more compact assembly code, that is working on "packed" data we save a large number of clock cycles. Benefits to Inkscape My first goal is to simplify the development of technical drawing tools into Inkscape and the development of an educational version of Inkscape focused on geometry learning and here I think to programs like Cabri [2]. All the first 3 points of my project go in this direction. The geometric construction methods I want to implement will make possible to deploy new technical live path effects. Expecially the fulfil of the third point will simplify the design of a complete spiro tool into Inkscape (at present such functionality is supported by a live effect). Having a complete and robust api for curve intersections will be useful to simplify the implementation of cut path tools, and boolean shape operations. Finally, the fourth point will put the basis for exploiting the power of modern cpu architetures. About me I am a student in mathematics (University of Pisa, Italy) I am always been keen on computer graphics and I am interested in computational geometry. My main programming language is C++, but in the past I also programmed in pascal, fortran 90, assembler, java, javascript, actionscript, bash script. Moreover I am knowgeable about several Boost libraries, XML APIs and the Scalar Vector Graphics Markup Language. Contributions to open source projects My main contribution in the open source field is the Google Summer of Code Project I applied for the last year. It was about 2geom development. In the project time-frame I achieved the following goals: - Implementation of a new curve type that fulfils the traits of an SVG Elliptical Arc and of an "Elliptic Toy" for playing with this curve type. - Some basic GSL library wrapping classes such as Vector, VectorView, Matrix, MatrixView and a fitting tool. - Ellipse and Circle curves with the ability to be created or by the algebraic implicit equation, or by providing a sufficient number of points lying on the curve. - Nearest point routines for all curve types, computing the point on the curve nearest to a given external point. - A curve-curve distance routine. - A Polynomial class for symbolic computation. - Implicitization method for polynomial curve intersection, and Bezier clipping method for Bezier curve intersection and for collinear normal matching. - Several simple geometric objects and construction methods that I have already listed above. I'm developing an extension of Boost.Function [3] in order to implement a model of function concept supporting multi-signature and so overloading. [4] I contributed in the development of a proof of concept svg import filter for Open Office. This import filter has been developed mainly by Fridrich Strba at Novell, my contribute consists in having added svg text element support to the import filter. I don't know, really. I *am* on not-so-fast machine myself, and seeing so many "legacy" drawings being degraded this way is... awful. I just can't imagine all the people who will encounter the same experience, and what they will think about Inkscape. What worries me, is that it will force everyone to use "better" or "best", when obviously they don't need it *really*, in fact. Not everyone uses advanced filters. Where is the benefit? I can't, I really can't work on awful renderings like what 0.47 shows, and using a better filter quality puts my machine down. Inkscape has become unusable for me. The dramatic change in the "average quality" is a total turn off :-( Maybe the blur and filter qualities could be stored on a per-document basis, and not for Inkscape itself? Maybe Inkscape could recognize that the file was created with This or That version, and issue a warning of some sort in that case when opening the file, saying "this file was created with an earlier version of Inkscape, the average blur and filter quality will be set to better for this file". These "old" files do not contain advanced filters as 0.47 allows them, anyway, so the performance degradation should not be noticeable and the rendering will be correct on canvas, allowing proper editing? I don't know what would then happen if the user would want to add the (awesome) new filters to the "old" file. GSOC: Cross platform WMF and EMF IO and other ideas

I have several ideas for GSOC 2009. I'll present all of them here. Idea 1 is about improving Inkscape's data interoperability. This means being able to paste parts of drawings from Inkscape directly into OpenOffice.org and MS Word and the other way around. This would involve writing a cross platform WMF and EMF output extension (our current EMF extension is Windows only). This could be accomplished by using libwmf, but this project seems to be abandoned since 2002. Another option is to use some code from OpenOffice.org. Recently (2006), MS published a full specification of those formats, so writing a new library to read and write them isn't out of the question. Idea 2 is has a similar goal to Idea 1 and it is to revamp the I/O extension system. This would involve unifying the code paths for open/save, export/import, clipboard, drag and drop, and create bitmap copy; unifying command line parameters for export (e.g. all extensions would accept --export-id); converting all extensions to load/save using GIO streams; and redesigning the Export dialog to allow exporting in any supported format. Idea 3 is to refactor the tools code, so that each tool is a separate object, and the number of files that list all tools is reduced to a minimum. This would get rid of toolbox.cpp, as well as greatly simplify the writing of new tools. Idea 4 is to replace Verbs with subclasses of Gtk::Action, with only one class per action (instead of one Verb class per several verbs). There would be a separate action group per document, and an additional one for global actions. Actions could be registered dynamically at startup. Which idea, when implemented, would be the most beneficial to Inkscape? SWIG bindings

I stumbled upon this interesting project: http://www.swig.org/ It is a binding generator with support for a lot of languages. We could use this to kickstart Inkscape scripting (as a trivial example, it would be possible to change the license of all files in a directory programatically) and allow extensions to call internal Inkscape functions (e.g. path boolean operations, convert stroke to path, etc.). There was also a GSOC project idea about this from another student, I think he should definitely use this. Hi, I'll try to explain better what I mean with a new screenshot: http://www.corpsmoderne.net/~eve97/vertex/rocket_bug/display_inkscape_046_v… First, I'd like to state a few things: - I'm not an artist, but I draw things in Inkscape, and I draw them in SVG to have them displayed as SVG. So my "visual perception" of SVG is what Inkscape shows to me, not a PNG (which I often not even generate). It means I design the object *as I see it rendered on Inkscape canvas*. - I have several drawings made with 0.46 or previous versions of Inkscape, and there are many places where I could download SVG designed with that (openclipart, etc.) So, let's take the following hypothesis: - After seeing a nice SVG in my browser, I download or open in Inkscape 0.47 a file which was drawn with a previous 0.46 version, in order to use it as a clipart, or to rework on it. On the top of the screenshot, it is a shape drawn in Inkscape 0.46, with filter quality set to average (default). It is what I see in my browser, or on the PNG if I generate it. My 0.47 Inkscape is set to default for both Blur display and Filter display, as I have a small machine (512Mb memory, Intel Pentium III mobile, 1133Mhz). I open the file, and I see what shows at the bottom of the screenshot. I hope you'll admit that it is awful and doesn't look like at all what shows in my browser. BUT it is what I work on, I have no other way to work on SVG. I'm not switching back and forth to PNG or to the browser to check what it looks like there. What am I supposed to do at this point? Remember, I'm an average user, not knowning the Inkscape internals. A) I say: this Inkscape program is mad, I'm not going to use it. I close it, end of story. B) I could try to change the blur quality and/or the filter quality to better or best. OK, I do that. But the problem is, the canvas is not updated when I do that, and it's a general preference, not a per-document preference. So, first, I'll have to: - with my document still opened, change the Blur / Filter effect and see that what is displayed on canvas has not changed. - close the document and Inkscape, reopen Inkscape which now has Blur and Filter set to better or best, and see that the file looks like what it should. (or something similar, because I have no idea of the exact real value of the quality). SO: setting the displays to a "lower" average quality in Inkscape 0.47 than in Inkscape 0.46, which was supposed to be intentional to help the designer (the designer in Inkscape 0.47) conserve CPU, results in fact in obliging me (who opened on older file) to set Inkscape to high quality, for all my documents. And I have a small machine - I can't afford to do that. C) I could just do what I was adviced to in the channel: remove the filters on the object. This means I need to find all objects with blur/filter, one by one, and remove that. After such a tedious task, then I lose the original information (here, the blur was 0.3), meaning I am absolutely unable to re-create or re-see the original file, as the artist designed it. What am I supposed to do now? For all the reasons explained above, I think that, although done with the best intention, the fact that the blur/filter display "average quality" has changed results in the opposite effect as the one intended. It seems to me that, at the moment, there are more SVG "done with 0.46" than "done with O.47', and that the case I am describing will arrive for a long, long time... Hi, I'm Sonali Mendis from University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. I went through the project ideas listed at Inkscape page and I think it is a great project of my interest. I'm a graphic designer plus a developer and I think and I want to add my ideas and effort to improve this open source project. While using Inkscape, I thought *Guide Improvement *is essentially needed. In addition to that I have another my own idea of introducing different brush types with ability to increase and decrease the size by click of a key while drawing to the pencil tool and introduce an eraser tool with the same options. Blurry Icons Problem on OSX

Hi, In the latest build from source on OSX (rev 21007) 95% of all user interface icons continue to be totally blurred. I submitted a screenshot in an earlier thread which, if it interests you, can be viewed here: http://img102.imageshack.us/img102/9260/inkscape20798osx105inte.png I understand that this is probably not at the top of the priority list. On that end, I would like to just ask two questions: 1. Is this normal for the current OSX builds or is this tied to my environment only? 2. Is there something I can do to revert back to rev. Rendering problem for an object with blur / 0.46 Official vs 209225 vs 20967

Hello, I have opened a file which I had done originally with 0.45.1 with the latest win32 snapshot (rev 20967) and there is a problem of rendering in Inkscape. The most obvious object is a simple object with fill and stroke solid colours, and a blur of 0.3. You'll find, for each version that I tested: - the object extracted from the original file, in svg - a screenshot of the rendering in the chosen Inkscape verion - the PNG exported by the said version. In all three versions, the filters/blur parameters were set to average (the default). I'll put them on my server so everyone can see the differences. There is also a zip of the 9 files to download. In short: the exported PNG appears correct in the three versions, but the screenshots of the rendering in Inkscape look very (or very) different across versions. The file looks absolutely normal, as I draw it, in 0.46 official. In r20225, the object is already badly rendered in Inkscape. In r20967, it's awful... How will the user figure out what do draw, or what will happen when a file made with 0.46 will be opened in a later version? Which one is correct to draw? Hello all, I just wanted to put out that SVG Open 2009 is looking for header graphics for their new website... which is about to go live. SVG Open 2008 had a subtle header with outlines of the castles in Nuremberg, so is probably not good for this year's conference in California. If anyone is interested, this is a great opportunity to showcase both SVG and Inkscape. I believe that the site will be able to serve SVG directly for browsers that support it.

Hi, as a kind of test for some other things I have in mind I added better support for editing guides by mouse. You will notice that the anchor point of guides is now displayed on canvas as a small dot. You can still move guides as you used to, but now you can also rotate them around the anchor as well as move the anchor along the guide. What I'm not really happy with, though, is the way in which the various functionalities are accessed. So I'd like your help in this respect. Currently it works as follows: 1) dragging the anchor moves the whole guide (and the anchor with it) 2) pressing Shift and dragging the anchor moves it along the guide (while the guide itself stays in place) 3) dragging the guide anywhere outside the anchor rotates it around the anchor 4) pressing Shift and dragging the guide outside the anchor bypasses rotation and moves the whole guide (as in 1.) Does this make sense to you? Do you have better suggestions as to which functionality should be accessed in which way/with which modifier? Thanks for your feedback, Max

[NEW] Icon theming

All icons used in Inkscape should now be themable. You can find out the names by looking at the IDs in icons.svg, at icon names in in share/icons/hicolor/scalable/*, or at the file src/ui/icon-names.h. All names are defined in a new file, ui/icon-names.h. This file should be used for all icon names used in Inkscape. I also removed stale files which attempted to do the same but weren't used universally (ui/stock.h, ui/stock-items.h, inkscape-stock.h). Right now Inkscape uses the discrete SVG icons. I timed "hot" startup (using "time inkscape --verb FileQuit" twice and noting the second run) and it seems that it's actually faster (9.281s) than using icons.svg (9.799s), probably because the RSVG renderer which renders the SVG icons in Gnome is faster than ours. Hi, I've had to use markers in inkscape recently and found them very frustrating: putting the markers in the middle of the semgents instead of intermediate nodes is much better in many cases. Consider a path made of horizontal and vertical segments: to show an orientation on it, you'd like to add little arrows at the middle of the segments, definitely not at the corners. I know this contradicts the svg specification, wich has good reason to do so (in patricular, I guess the middle of a segment is not so well defined...) Then I came to the following minimal suggestion: would it make sens to refine the svg spec to avoid/allow markers at smooth/angular points? Even in this case, this wont be a perferct solution: in many cases, I'd like to have only one arrow at the middle of each smooth piece, even if that piece requires many points to be drawn. I don't see any svg compilent way to achieve this. Any suggestion? we could have lpe generated markers, more or less like what "pattern along path" does, with improved placement of the pattern (= markers), but I don't like this solution, as it is not natural to use lpe to do a "stroking decoration"... Last year I had to interact often with cairo and pango guys because my project did depend on a new feature of these libs (userfonts). But they didnt seem to have clear deadlines for this feature. Even nowadays we still dont have userfonts feature integrated into libpango. Having "sister SoC projects" could be a way of addressing this kind of issue. JucaBlues

Anyone interested in mentoring me? Last year I got a bit frustrated with my mentor because we haven't had too much interaction. I'd like to be mentored by someone who is often available on IRC and willing to interact in a daily basis. I feel much more productive when I have constant feedback on my work. Early freeze

Hi all, for previous releases, we had a two-stage freeze: first, feature freeze (no new features, only bugfixes), followed by full freeze for a short time and then a release. This time, I propose that we start even earlier with an even milder freeze: a _refactoring freeze_ which blocks any wide-ranging, deep-going refactorings that are not focused on adding a specific feature or fixing a specific bug. In particular, this means no lib migrations, no rewriting and rearranging code "for general correctness", and no 2geom syncs "just in case" until the release. I realize this is all done for good reasons, but experience shows that each such wave of changes brings bugs that keep popping up long after the wave has passed. So, if there are no objections, let's finish and commit any refactorings that are pending, and set a date after which we will only be allowed to commit focused, easily testable features and bugfixes. -- bulia byak Inkscape. Hi, Some of our extensions create polyline (WMF importer, IIRC) and circle (create_from_triangle.py) elements which are not directly supported, thought rendered in Inkscape. I wonder what the plan for suporting them is, because right now when you have e.g. a circle element, you cannot edit it and you cannot even change its style. Alexandre

No blur on zero area bbox items

Hi all, In Jabber someone mentioned that no blur is applied on horizontal and vertical lines. I tried and it is true. I think it is caused by a 'zero area' geometric bbox for horizontal and vertical lines. Could someone with more knowledge of the whole filter rendering chain look into this? I think sp-item.cpp, line 648, "SPItem::GEOMETRIC_BBOX" should be changed to the bbox calculation including stroke width. Thanks, Johan

Problem with our stream writing

I was tracking down bug #340451 and it turns out to be more pervasive than I thought: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/340451 The problem is that things are casting 16-bit Unicode values to bytes by chopping all but the last 8 bits. I'm going to be working on fixing this, but it is such a fundamental issue that I'm surprised we're not seeing more issues. Also I'll need to test a few more things and make sure I don't break more than I fix. In the Java world they address this by having a very explicit difference between characters and bytes. Bytes are 'byte' and handled by "OutputStream"s whereas characters are 'character' and are handled by "Writer"s. So I'll just get some tests fixed and then clean up with proper transformations. If anyone can take a look for things that might be a problem, related bugs, things I should test, etc. that would help. Thanks.

Batch conversion from raster to verctor (PNG/JPG to PDF/SVG)

Hi everybody, I am trying to improve the quality of printing of some low-resolution raster pics. I tried autotrace that has the ideal interface for me (i.e. "autotrace infile.jpg --output-file outfile.pdf"). However the quality is really low (especially on photos) because it generates random triangles and leave white spaces. I am very satisfied with Inkscape's quality using the item in the menu: "Path - Trace Bitmap." (multiple scans - Colors after adjusting some options). I wonder if I can convert the pictures that I have (they are in JPG but I can convert them to PNG) in PDF (or SVG) through some command line options or a batch script (that I don't have idea if it exists and how it works). The process should run on a OpenSolaris box that has not any X client configured. Is this feasible or I need to mess up with Inkscape's source code? Best, Chris

Hello Working on filters for one moment now I was asking myself if there are any progresses (or projects) about implementing Kernel Unit Length in Lighting Effects. Following this Niko Kiirala tutorial http://fedev.blogspot.com/2008/07/filter-effects-lighting-effects.html "Kernel Unit Length is not yet used in Inkscape. It is used to make the result resolution-independent. Now that it isn't used, with high zooms you can see odd plateaus forming." If that's not so important in daily web graphics, from an illustrator point of view that's a problem not only for zooming but also for scaling up some effects or using wide blurs as basic composites for lighting. Hi... No promises, but I'm mildly interested in getting inkscape to cut directly to small craft Graphtec plotters on any platform that inkscape is supported on w/o installing additional interpreters like Python or PERL. I know this has been talked about before, but I don't think there are any technical discussions to be found here as to how to do it. Looking at the inkscape wiki, all I see are plugins that translate between formats. I'm not terribly interested in saving yet another format on my HDD and would prefer just to print to the plotter. However, I'm not sure this is even possible plugin or not. I assume this is the best inkscape plugin tutorial: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/PythonEffectTutorial ...but, as I suspected, this lends it's self to modifying existing Scalable Vector Graphics files. That is, inkscape understands the format it receives back. What happens if the format is foreign to inkscape? Will inkscape still be able to send it to the plotter (i.e. print it)? Let me know if I'm missing the boat, but, as far as I can tell, what is necessary is to place a " filter / plugin " between inkscape and the plotter. And, apparently, inkscape has no provisions for that. ...thanks

Hi, Snapping hints are awesome. However, there is one thing that worries me a lot about them: they are constructed with English syntax in mind. I foresee lots of complains from translators, including myself :) Take 'cusp node to cusp node' for example. It's fine for English, but in Russian these two 'cusp node' instances will be in different cases and thus have different case endings --- both 'cusp' and 'node'. Is there something we can do about that? Alexandre

This change broke the Inkscape.app invocation, due to a missing quotation mark. Well, there's probably a better way to do this, but adding the line export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/bin:/usr/texbin just before exec "$CWD/bin/inkscape" "$@" in /Applications/Inkscape.app/Contents/Resources/script did the trick. Now I can start Inkscape.app by clicking its icon, without "losing" Render-->LaTeX. Note: I have pstoedit in /usr/local/bin, with latex and dvips in /usr/texbin. Without the added line, the value of PATH is only /usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin, rather than the value of PATH in my login shell. I just installed the latest snapshot of Inkscape-20809-10.5-i386.dmg on my MacBook. There does not seem to be an option for including LaTeX formulas. With the stable version of Inkscape, I use the textext extension. However, I thought the ability to render LaTeX had now been built into Inkscape. Am I missing something, or is this feature not available yet? Thanks.

I found it easier to reproduce in some drawings than in others, but I was able to reproduce it even on a blank canvas. Mid-drag, the canvas stops being dragged around, but now all mouse buttons are ignored forever, and the mouse cursor remains in Inkscape's shapes even outside Inkscape's window. Some people say they figured out work- arounds that released the mouse buttons, but none worked for me. (I'm on MacOS X using X11.app.) I found https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/291795 and it seemed similar, so I started trying to determine how the panning feature worked. I appended my one-line patch to that bug report. In essence, some versions of Gdk seem to be unreliable at maintaining the button state while middle-mouse dragging. There is a check for this in the src/event_state.cpp to account for this, and it aborts the drag for safety reasons. But it calls gdk_pointer_ungrab() with a specific time that *should* match the time it was grabbed. In most cases, this appears to work, but not always. http://ftp.moblin.org/moblin/releases/test/alpha1/doc/gdk/gdk-General.html#… I found that giving the generic GDK_CURRENT_TIME is more reliable in actually releasing the mouse, than trying to remember what time was given to the gdk_pointer_grab(). Since this is a safety-oriented release, I think that ensuring the mouse is ungrabbed is more important than the bookkeeping of time values. Any comments? Hi all, I just added an infinite loop testcase to our testsuite. I don't know how Inkscape should handle this. Already a warning is reported: ** (inkscape.exe:2592): WARNING **: More than 32 iteration while updating document 'D:\gsoc-testsuite\tester\.\testcases\basic\infinite-loop-01.svg' But no further action is taken, so this warning is spammed until the program runs out of memory and aborts execution. Inkscape Export to "JavaFX 1.0 FXD/FXZ Content file" format

Hi, all Last year Sun Microsystems released JavaFX Production Suite (together with JavaFX 1.0) which have Adobe Photoshop CS3 and Adobe Illustrator CS3 plugins for exporting graphical assets into JavaFX format. The output (.fxz) is a ZIP archive containing 'content.fxd' file representing vector graphics picture in JavaFX format. Optionally, this archive may contain images and fonts referenced by the 'content.fxd' file. The content file can be viewed in netbeans IDE (JavaFX plugin should be installed!). The netbeans has UIStub generator for building a JavaFX class based on content.fxd and users may manipulate graphic objects by changing object properties, moving them, animating, making them visible/invisible and so on. The objects you want to control in JavaFX should have special prefix in naming of Inkscape "id" attribute like "jfx:object_name". Others will be anonymous in JavaFX. I propose that this plugin for Inkscape be used. It is based on the work of B.Jamison, S.Neto and J.Clarke for JavaFX Export (javafx-out.h, javafx-out.cpp). My updates to it were posted a few weeks ago. Personally I consider the "FXD/FXZ Content file" format more useful and I am going to use this actively in future projects, which explains my motivation. Implementation. ---------------------- The implementation is obvious: scan the object's tree and write the corresponding JavaFX constructs. The output has all attributes embedded in line therefore the information about gradients, filters and clip-paths are stored (only pointer information) and then used when actual graphic objects in the scene are built. Embedded images are decoded and external images are copied into the output ZIP archive automatically. Fonts should be handled in the same way (any volunteers!?). Like Illustrator plugin I always try to recognize simple objects (circles, ellipses, rectangles) behind the paths to reduce the output size. As a zip library implementation I used http://www.nih.at/libzip. Actually I am working with Linux, openSUSE 11.1 distribution, where this library is known as libzip1. It seems that Ubuntu distribution supports it as well. The Windows platform is also supported: http://www.nih.at/listarchive/libzip-discuss/msg00009.html While I might agree that introducing a new dependency into inkscape may not be welcomed, my attempt to use inkscape/src/dom/util/ziptool.[h,cpp] was unhappy: extremally slow! (~ 30 secs on some pictures). NEW: UniConvertor in Windows bundle

I tried to use CDR import on Windows with UniConvertor and found out that: - you can only install UniConvertor into a separate installed Python, not into Inkscape's own Python, - even if you do that, it won't work because Inkscape insists on using its own Python, even to the point of prepending it to the system PATH, so it is simply impossible to run the separate Python unless you know exactly where it is. For these reasons, I decided that the best strategy would be to include a copy of UniConvertor to our Inkscape Python in devlibs, which I did. I think supporting CorelDraw formats out of the box is an important enough feature to justify a few extra megabytes to the distribution. P.S. Little mistake in the wiki regarding the font cache on Windows

Hello, In the page: http://www.inkscape.org/faq.php#Inkscape_does_not_see_some_of_the_fonts_.28… I think there is a little mistake when it says: This was a bug in versions of Inkscape up to 0.43, caused by using an obsolete font cache. This cache is stored in the file called .fonts.cache-1. This file may be in your Windows folder, or in your Temp folder, or in "My documents" folder, or in the folder listed in the $HOME environment variable. Use file search by name to locate this file. On my Windows XP system, the font cache is called FNTCACHE.DAT and is located in c:\windows\system32 I also have in C:\Program Files\InkscapeDev20090217\inkscape\etc\fonts fonts.conf fonts.dtd I couldn't find a .font.cache-1 file anywhere, and all the references to it point to Linux OSs. Could someone with editing rights edit this particular section of the FAQ? It looks like there is no section regarding the font cache for Linux, maybe that is what is missing or where the confusion lies? Thanks :-)

Plácido Sousa sent an improved version of the current default icon set to the user list. It's a clear improvement over the current, and in my opinion, it should be made the default set since there is no consensus about the Tangoified theme and the default has some evident problems. The proposed set from Sousa is a polished version of the same icons we have now, so the familiarity won't be a problem and the people -like me- who think the current set needs desperately some love will be more comfortable with the new look. What do you think?

Global 'static' dialogs

Hi all, Please help me test the dialogs import from OCAL and export from OCAL. I just fixed bug 241390 [1]. Some dialogs are defined 'static', so they are not recreated when opening the dialog more than once. The problem is that they have a parent window defined that links the dialog to a specific SPDesktop. So when the dialog is called from another desktop..., crashes might happen. I am fixing this (making the dialogs non-static, recreating them every time they are needed) for the following dialogs: import from OCAL, export from OCAL, and the new export dialog that is not used at this moment. I cannot test whether these dialogs still work with my fix. I'm very sorry if they are broken now, but I feel this is a very important fix for stability. I commited small patch in order to be able to compile using the "./configure --enable-inkboard" option: rev 20788 It looks that the files that I commented out have no effect in the code and are not in use. Could one please investigate in this? Using this patch inkscape opens the connect dialog. I can not prove that it works because I do not know how to connect. Tooltip on snapindicator is now zoom dependent?

In rev. #20773 the distance of the snap-tooltip to the snap-indicating-cross has been made zoom-dependent by "speleo3". Now when I zoom in, snapping might occur at one end of the screen whereas the tooltip might show up at the other end of the screen. I think it should appear at a fixed distance from the snap-indicator, i.e. measured in hard screen pixels. Could you please explain why you think this is better? Absence from Inkscape work

Dear fellow Inkscapers, on rather short notice I need to inform you that I won't be able to do any development work during the next 2-3 months. Also, I will have very little internet access (if at all) and therefore won't be receiving emails from the -devel list. I am aware that there are a couple of - in part quite substantial - things which I leave unfinished in the SVN repository and I truly apologize that due to my broken laptop (which left me with no personal computer at all during the last half-year) and both major upcoming changes in my life and a lot of very urgent research work for university, I so far haven't completed the tasks I was working on. I very much hope and am positive that things are going to be better in the second half of 2009 and I promise that I will complete all the unfinished stuff as soon as I can resume coding. Until then, please feel free to remove any code of mine which is not functional or not tidied up. You are also welcome to improve it but I will also do so when I'm back at my regular Inkscape work. For the guides stuff I committed a short while ago, I'm attaching a patch of recent work in progress which (partly) implements selecting and editing of multiple guides. You are welcome to clean it up and commit it - or to ignore it for now. Again, sorry for all the inconvenience. I'm very much looking forward to getting back up to speed with my work. svg filters crash

Hi, For last couple of days Inkscape crashes whenever an SVG Filter from Filters menu is chosen. https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/334050 BTW, we have 37 more bugs tagged with "crash". If we are planning to do a release this year, maybe we should encourage ourselves to clean up the mess or at least leave several wet floor signs around :) Alexandre

Export, Publish and Save As

Hi inkscapers, I was looking at a few bugs (#168504 and #168958) and thinking about some of my own personal grievances with the whole business of exporting and saving as. Currently in inkscape 0.46 (Ubuntu 8.10) there are a whole boat full of exporting, saving, loading menus in the File menu. Most of which seem to follow this logic: 1) File New/Load/Save * New > * Open ... * Open Recent > * Revert * Save * Save As ... * Save a copy ... 2) Import/Export * Import ... * Export Bitmap ... * Import from Open Clipart ... 3) Print ... 4) Vacuum Defs 5) Preferences * Document Properties ... * Document Meta Data ... * Inkscape Preferences ... * Input Devices ... 6) Application * Close * Quit This seems a bit of a mess, although I don't know if you've changed much for 0.47 so apologies if this has already been put through for refinement. My suggestions would be as follows: * Move Revert to Edit and have it as a function of the undo system. And/Or rename it to 'Reload from File' * Remove Save a Copy and replace with 'Publish ...' which would have a dialog specifically designed to export to pdf, plain svg or png and with options that make sense such as v1.1 svg, clean defs and no personal data (such as paths). * The document properties and meta data seem out of place, since they're more to do with the document object than the file object. Maybe a top level document menu? One that includes some of the edit menu items specific for the document? * Vacuum Defs seems like a plugin or something that could be a part of publish, or the doc menu. * Import and Export make sense, but perhaps having plugins that allow imports and exports to various places and removing the specific link for open clipart. Conversion of circular arc to Bezier curve

This is a follow-up to LP332735. In the file \src\sp-ellipse.cpp there is a formula for calculating the length of a Bezier arm when converting a circular arc to a Bezier curve. The formula reads: len = 0.552*(e-s)/M_PI_2 where (e-s) is the angle of the arc. I think the formula should read: len = 4*tan((e-s)/4)/3 I've created a patch for this, at https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/332735 , but I'm reluctant to commit it, because I don't actually compile the code myself, I work only from the Windows nightly builds, so it may be a few days before I can test it. Would anyone be willing to confirm that this patch will not cause a crash, or is it okay if I just commit it? Right now I have here an experienced webmaster interested in Inkscape who could turn a ready-to-go design into PHP templates or whatever you want. Do we have a new design? Hi All, Just to say that working on the Lumiera project, we've adopted the GDL library for panel management, same as Inkscape. We've found some shortcomings with GDL: it's got a few bugs, the documentation is sparse, and it lacks some features that we need. Right now the Anjuta guys are maintaining it, and I'm submitting patches, and other people seem to be contributing to it from time to time. I notice that Inkscape uses it's own forked version of GDL. I don't know who's maintaining that code, but can I suggest that someone take some time to try and move over to using the shared library? The Anjuta guys are very helpful, and seem happy to accept all kinds of patches, including feature additions, so there shouldn't be too many political problems in merging. If you can merge over, then Inkscape, Anjuta, and Lumiera will all benefit from shared maintenance of the code. The flip side is that I'm squashing bugs, and I'd like Inkscape to benefit from my work! Is this going to be possible, do you think? Best Regards Joel

Issue with work on new font dropdown

Hello Everyone, I want to discuss one issue with the new font dropdown. I've already begun work on it and it can be seen in action in these 2 videos: http://futurepast.free.fr/out.ogv http://futurepast.free.fr/preview-text-update.ogv It uses threading for generating the preview as not to stall the UI/main application while scrolling, or take too long to startup when generating all the previews at startup of the application. My architecture for this is very pluggable, I defined interfaces for all the classes used and wrote a few sample implementations which you can see at work in those 2 videos. Now I've run into a problem: For the class that generates the actual thumbnails I've initially chosen Pango to render them. Now it seems that Pango is not thread-safe and I wrote another implementation using just cairo which seems to work fine so far. The issues is that with cairo, we don't get proper thumbnails for some fonts, or some scripts. Pango handles this on a higher level and much better. Bulia mentioned to me that tradeoffs might be possible, but I am not sure at which point to make these. I'm not an export on cairo or freetype2 to make this particular backend work properly with all fonts and all scripts/glyphs. Then, there is always the third option of not using threading, but I'd prefer to keep it since it works really well and is an ideal solution for the problem of time-consuming rendering of previews of complex fonts. Please don't worry about "threading" itself, I'm using libsigx in accordance with Bulia, which can be found here: http://www.assembla.com/wiki/show/sigx and is a threading library based on libsigc++ and makes thread programming *very* safe. The question now is: - Keep the cairo-only backend with the tradeoff that we can not render everything properly - Try awkward things with Pango like dlopening() a 2nd ("private") instance of libpango and use this solely for generation of the previews - Drop threading(?) - Does anyone have a 4th solution? To those interested: The details in the problems with Pango lie in that some structures inside libpango are not properly locked or protected, and race conditions occur when simply running the thumbnail generation in a thread with the same libpango instance, and merely simply rendering the application's UI with Gtk+ which uses Pango for text widgets and/or rendering canvas text since layout-TNG uses Pango as well from what I've seen in the code so far. Any suggestions regarding this problem are appreciated. Apparently I created a branch in our svn repository by mistake, I only intended to switch to another revision. I was using eclipse without paying much attention to which popup menus I was exactly in. See rev. #20751, we now have a trunk in our trunk :-(. Could someone please delete this? I'm not going to try to do this myself to avoid making even a bigger mess of it. Bizarro Makefile_insert usage

What is the purpose of using Makefile_insert to pretend that everything is in the src directory instead of using the SUBDIRS directive? I'm intending to change the Automake build system to link the executables from single object files instead of static libraries so that we may finally put files in the proper directories (e.g. remove widgets/ and dialogs/ and move those to ui/widget and ui/dialog/, as well as join helper/, util/ and svg/), and I would like to know whether I should also sanitize general Makefile usage while I'm at it. Right now every dialog, extension, etc. has to have a header file - otherwise it's unusable. The underlying issue for dialogs is that there must be an action defined to open them. This means either including the dialog header in verbs.cpp, or wherever the dialog is used. I stumbled over OpenBabel sources some time ago and this gave me the following idea. On one hand, it scatters the action definitions across many files, but on the other it removes the need for centralized initialization and improves modularity (everything pertaining to a given dialog is in one file, including its actions). Generic cascading in libcroco

Hello, I've finally gotten around to add a generic interface to the libcroco selection engine. Pretty much just exchanging libxml calls to invocations on an vtable provided by the API consumer. On top of that I reinstated the libxml-based API and made sure the tests (the selection engine is only used by test5) work as before. Are you inkscapers still interested in eventually using upstream libcroco? Your internal copy seems to have deviated pretty much from upstream, it would be good if we could at least exchange fixes, things were not quite obvious looking at the raw rdiff. We (Thomas Wood + yours truly) actually tried to extract just the selection engine patch(es) from your svn repository, but it proved quite hard to make any sense of it. My branch is at http://bzr-playground.gnome.org/~robsta/libccss-selection-engine/ but will go to trunk within the next few days, as the tests already work as they should. Best, Rob

The "Latency skew" and "Pre-render named icons" options make absolutely zero sense for the user. Especially the former. For the latter, I can at least guess that it's something to do with icons. With "skew", I'm totally at a loss. What latency? Where? When? Tooltip only exacerbates the confusion. There's now a built-in spell checker. Press Ctrl+Alt+K or choose Text > Check spelling to check all visible text objects in your document (they need not be selected) in turn, going top-to-bottom and left-to-right. Once a misspelled word is found, a red frame around it is displayed, and the object with the misspelling is selected; if you are in Text tool, it also places the text cursor at the beginning of the misspelled word. In the dialog, you can choose one of the listed suggestions and Accept it (this button is disabled unless you choose something in the list); Ignore the word for the rest of this session; or Add the word to the local dictionary. Also, since the dialog does not lock Inkscape's window, you can simply edit the word with Text tool. Once you edit it to something acceptable to the speller, it will automatically turn off the red frame and continue checking the document. On Linux, you need to install Aspell and its dictionaries for the languages you want to check. On Windows, for now, only English dictionary is included with Inkscape builds. My questions: - how do you want to select the language - in the prefs or right in the spellcheck dialog? - should I make this compiled conditionally on linux - will anyone want to compile without spellchecker? - what other languages to include with windows installer? we could take all, but it's many megabytes... -- bulia byak Inkscape. It would be good, as always, to keep the format simple as possible. Common GUI elements It might be good for user if similar GUI element would be used for similar purposes. I think filters are sufficiently complex, different from everything else, and have enough support in Inkscape now, so they deserve to be treated more like a top-level entity. In particular, I propose to add a new menu, Filters, before Effects. It would contain: - All the submenus with preset filter that are now in Effects > Filters. Ivan Louette is working on a huge and exciting expansion of that hierarchy, adding lots of powerful new filters. It's obviously too deeply hidden now, it deserves more visibility as one of the most important 0.47 additions. - The "Filter Effects..." dialog command which I propose to rename to "Build Filters" or "Filter Builder" or something like that. The current name is not very descriptive and even a bit misleading due to the word "effects" which refers to too many too different things in Inkscape (once again, let me reiterate my old wish: rename "Effects" menu to "Extensions", that is what they are!). The typical workflow would be to first choose one of the presets, then if needed, go to the Filter Builder to adjust the preset or start a new filter from scratch. - The Remove Filter command. Hi all, I am slowly becoming desperate. I have been trying to compile from svn the same way I always have: svn update autogen.sh ./configure --prefix=/var/opt/ --with-perl --with-python --with-xft --enable-lcms --enable-inkboard --with-gnome-vfs make make install But now I have a new machine: a dual core 64 bit AMD running OpenSuse 11.1. Building ubuntu/debian package from svn

Dear list, Im trying to build a .deb package to test out the greatest and newest feature of inkscape. I have read this documentation: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/CompilingDebian I have downloaded the daily snapshot: http://inkscape.modevia.com/svn-snap/inkscape-current.tar.bz2 I followed the steps without success. I suspect, the documentation is outdated. There is no debian/ directory in the inkscape source. The inkscape does not use autoconfig but cmake if I see it correctly. So creating the debian/ directory using the dh_make command, and building the package fails. (make[1]: *** No rule to make target `clean'. Stop.) So can somebody direct me to an updated documentation? How can I create a proper debian/ directory, and building the package with help of this directory? Using this command: dpkg-buildpackage -uc -us -rfakeroot In summary a step-by-step tutorial would be really helpful! Im using ubuntu 8.10 currently. Thank you in advance, Khiraly

Corel DRAW-like Snapping

The current snapping mechanism is next to unusable when there are many places where a given thing might snap. The approach of snapping everything-to-everything is fundamentally wrong, because it simply doesn't work for many snapping points. I have a different idea, inspired by Corel DRAW, where snapping is much more useful than currently in Inkscape: 1. When snap is enabled, the Select tool displays a highlight and some text describing the snappable thing over which it hovers. The things that are highlighted are the same that are enabled in the snap toolbar. 2. During a subsequent drag the snapping point that gets highlighted is chosen as the only snapping point for the dragged object. Otherwise the object doesn't snap when moving. This way we don't have to snap everything to everything, because we know one of the points the user intends to snap. fonts & printing to pipes questions.

Hi... I tried to search through the forum but I'm a newbe w.r.t. the proper terms and had trouble with my key words. Going on, at one point I remember being able to cut from inkscape sessions which included text objects. But now it's not working. I think the problem is with the post script files generated by inkscape. I am using a (little known?) utility called graphtecprint that I've modified for my own purposes. I am familiar with what it can do. Looking at the inkscape generated post script output I am sure graphtecprint can not handle a section of the post script file which starts with "/sfnts [". This is followed by several thousand bytes of what looks like pure hex (in ascii format). What I need are the cutting commands! I need inkscape to output instructions to cut the letter "A" just like it outputs instructions to cut a box or a circle. ---------- Another subject, printing to pipes. This feature saved me a lot of time and made placing utilities like graphtecprint between inkscape and the physical world easy. With out the inkscape printing to pipes feature I have to first print to a file. Are there any plans to put this feature back into inkscape? ...thanks

Theme changers are quite common in shareware/freeware apps for windows, so I don't think that would be a big deal if we put Tangos as default and let people change it back to the current set if they don't like it. That would be enough for them (they won't be forced to Tango) and would be nice for people who prefers Tango because they fit with the other free apps. In my honest opinion, for people who sees inkscape as a freebie, a UI option for changing the icon set will be enough. LGM and development opportunities

Hi all, This is an exploratory email for all teams participating at LGM. There are more questions than answers and everything is in discussion at present time. In the end we need the input of each team. Here's the punch! I had a very productive discussion with René Barsalo at the SAT on Monday about next LGM. Summary: For next LGM we could have at least two projects working a full day at SAT: Blender and Hugin. The SAT immersive projection equipment would be available to both teams for direct work, hacking, presentations, etc.. Starting at 11:00 the day would be followed by a LGM "5 to 7" where all the teams would gather for a beer. So far we have thought of Thursday to be that day. So, second day of LGM. We need to know if this would appeal to the development teams of Hugin and Blender. Although I trust this event can only add to the interest of LGM, and also noting that this is in no way competing with Polytechnique's facilities — only a big plus to have the SAT in Montreal and to have LGM in Montreal... I reported this bug a week ago. https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/325162 As it was discussed before, the blending modes in individual elements is a headache because they need a solid element behind to show correctly (that was the main reason of moving the blend modes to the layers dialog, and it's still quite broken). That feBlend filter in the blur effect should be reverted asap. Imo the blend filters should be removed from everywhere except the filters dialog, since the problem of the background acumulation isn't solved, and lost feBlend filters use to be a pain when they left applied on an object after an undone operation (unexperienced users will have a really hard time trying to see why some objects disappear or look bad over others, until they finally figure out that there's a filter applied and it has to be removed). The portion of my message you quoted is a little out of context, I was replying to someone who was a Windows user and thought that Tango icons are *linux only*, iirc. I was suggesting an icon theme changer in the UI if a better solution wasn't possible, but your solution is far more elegant and convenient. Disconnected Arabic letters

Hello there, I installed the last 0.46 version my Tiger (10.4.11) Mac OS X. When I write Arabic I get disconnected letters - not as Arabic should be. I had an earlier version (I don't remember which one) that worked perfectly on the same OS version. I tried to install all prior version down until 0.43 - and the problem wasn't fixed. Any ideas? eraser tool opinions?

Now that the Eraser tool is in SVN for quite some time, what do people think of it? Is it useful? In what mode do you use it, if at all? Disclaimer: as you may remember I was against this tool from the beginning, considering it redundant. Its Delete mode is equivalent to Alt+drag followed by Del in Selector, and its Cut mode is now equivalent to Alt+drag in Calligraphic pen which I just added: * When drawing with Alt, Inkscape subtracts the path you have created from the selected path (with Shift, it adds to the selected path). This allows you to quickly patch or fix problems in a stroke you have drawn without leaving the tool. SVGFonts oncanvas without pango userfont support?

this thread is meant to brainstorm the possibility of implementing SVGFonts rendering on canvas without use of libpango. Since libpango development of the userfonts feature is very slow (currently at 0% done), I would like to ask you to keep in mind the possibility of adding special cases for SVG Fonts in the font family selector and in the text rendering on canvas. I am not asking you (Milosz) to implement it. I just would like to be sure that you are aware of this need and, if possible, I would like to brainstorm a bit about what should we do to better integrate SVGFonts rendering on canvas even without pango support. New OS X Package

Dear Inkscape team - it's a package. The package was built on 10.5 and is Intel only. The package was built from SVN rev. 20630 and it uses Gtk+/Quartz instead of X11 windowing. There are a few bugs when running Inkscape on Gtk+/Quartz which I'm attempting to fix at the moment, once I have them fixed I will upload an updated package accordingly. I hope that despite the limited usability of the package (Intel-only) it can find some use. New as of revision #20491: the much requested and long overdue toolbar with snapping controls! Please test it and report any bugs. Question to you all: do you think we can remove the "snap" tabs in the document properties dialog, except for the snapping distance sliders? If you don't need it, just turn it off and it won't bother you again. If you don't like it, then please draw me some new icons. Please forgive, these are the first icons I've ever drawn :-). Hi all, I just moved almost all 0.47 LPEs to the "experimental" section in the code. This means that they will not show up in the normal 0.47 builds. We need to make sure they work and don't crash, that there is a testfile in the testsuite and that they are useable too. If you want to build Inkscape with experimental LPEs, make sure "LPE_ENABLE_TEST_EFFECTS" is defined. Hi all, I'm writing a separate application that parses and renders SVG files. However, I am completely baffled by the Arc.. After much thought, I have come to the conclusion that it may be better to just alter the Inkscape source to automatically convert Arcs to Paths before saving the file. However, I can't find where this (Object to Path) actually happens in the source. If I could find the method that the menu item calls, I could just call that method before it saves the SVG. Either that or I would love to know how to convert an SVG "A" to a "C"!! Thanks

regarding scripting improvements

Today I tryied (again) to animate an SVG using javascript. I wanted to simply move a star by offseting its x,y coordinates on screen. So, I created a star in Inkscape and then opened the SVG in Firefox. Looking at the xml (using FireBug) I noticed that d attribute of the star uses absolute coordinates. Thus, it is not practical to change it's position dinamically since I would have to set transform:translate(x-x0,y-y0) guessing the correct values of x0 and y0. It would be much better (for scripting purposes) to have shapes always created with relative coordinates around (0,0) and then translated to x0,y0 using the transform attribute. The x0,y0 coordinate should be the rotation center of the object (which is represented by a little cross in inkscape ui) Maybe we should modify sp_svg_write_path to do that. Or maybe create a sp_svg_write_path_relative. Or maybe there is a better place in the code where we could place the proposed new behaviour... I am just guessing. Please tell me what you think about it. Juca

So your case is not the average either. You choose to work with inkscape (which is great, beautiful and certainly has bugs) instead of Illustrator, that is already part of a suite that has better interchange between applications handling. If I say "you don't care" I mean that you probably "don't see that difference as a problem", so having so different icons is something that you find acceptable, as you find acceptable that Inkscape and Indesign don't have a better integration. Anyway, even though I don't agree with several of your points I respect your opinion and I think we could reach a compromise. My first proposition was to make the current Tango set the default as is, but I find some very reasonable suggestions on the go. -Creating new tangoified icons for the drawing tools more similar to the current tools (and unifying their look: all pointing to the same direction and showing the caps with a stroke). -Creating a new icon for the 3D Box tool with a 2-point or 3-point perspective. -Adding color to the geometric primitives tools (I wouldn't use too saturated colors. Not red for the circle -the REC icon- but shades of pink like the default one). -Creating a tangoified version of the current Tweak icon (I'm not sure about this. I really prefer the Tango icon, but it's matter of taste). -Creating a new icon for the bucket fill tool. I agree that the current Tango icon is too flat, but I don't think it's problematic for recognition. But some people think it is so let's change it. As a final thought, I'd like to back up the comment from Aaron Spike. He clearly states that he prefers the current set, but he stresses the importance of the unified look and the need of a section in the preferences to change the icon themes easily. Gez.

I've made some changes and tweaks according to the suggestions that several people made. They have a lighter outline for dark themes, but that makes them look blurred. Removing the outlines and keeping the dark color will make them useless for dark themes, so there's no way out: It's white with a grey outline like the original Tango set, or the middle gray with dark strokes (a.k.a. Bulia's spaghettis :-) What do you think? Gez.

Hi all, I comited the Calendar Generator to Inkscape SVN with only my personal tests in a home compiled UTF-8 Linux system. Alvin test it in a ISO-8859-15 Windos system and add a patch using unicode() function to accept Latin encoding. https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/320496 That was a problem for me, then i understand and add a encoding selector for all encodings of this page: http://docs.python.org/library/codecs.html#standard-encodings Now it works, but the user must selects the system encoding. andy-spiro test rendering changed completely?

For some reason the livepatheffect/andy-spiro test is now rendered quite different from how it used to be rendered (it changed between the 22nd and the 25th). I didn't create the test and am quite unfamiliar with the LPEs, so I have no idea how to judge which is right and which is wrong. Perhaps anyone can shed some light on this? Of course any ideas on what caused the change (regression?) would also be welcome. The black details in the oficial set are still visible but the contrast lowered a lot, so they are difficult to see. In a pure black theme they will be completely invisible. The Tango text tool also needs some tweaking for dark themes. About the colors: I'd prefer a single shade for the shapes tools, Shades of blues, for instance, with low saturation. But it seems the majority prefers the different colors. I agree with Bulia about lowering the saturation of them a bit. Finally we're getting closer to an agreement :-) Gez.
