Hello everyone, I would like to submit this idea as my summer of code project and of course any feedback/piece of mind from the inkscape community is greatly appreciated. The Live Path Effect Stack seemed to be *the* thing I always wanted to have in my graphic programs. I have used similar technologies(don't know if this is the right word) before in 3D Studio Max and in Blender, but the way LPES works from what I read is far from what I was hoping for. The main functional fault of LPES is that it is a stack in my opinion. Consider this example from the LPE-bluprint wiki page: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Image:Lpe_need_rich_input.png The Live Path Effect would need two objects, the cloud and the sun(let's forget for a minute that each of those is itself an object with an LPE applied,) but how can this be done in a stack environment? The obvious way would be to apply the LPE to one object and add a reference(pointer/id...) to the other object as a parameter. This way would most certainly work, but the second object would remain somewhere outside the object with the LPES applied to it, which will make working with a lot of LPES awkward. How I would like to do it: Instead of using a stack I would like to have an LPE Tree. Each tree node can be either an effect or an object. This way each object can contain a whole hierarchy of editable effects(Similar to Blender and Maya's Node System, but more simple). This would essentially make on-canvas editing of any part of the object(the outline of the cloud, the spike or the circle of the sun) more intuitive as the object itself would contain all the information necessary to build them. Inkscape 0.46

The Inkscape 0.46 release has been tagged and a tarball is in the process of being created. The next step will be packaging and finalizing PR materials. Thank you everyone for your hard work in producing this release. We will be embargoing PR announcements until March 24th, to provide the Windows port with additional time to identify fixes to some critical bugs, so please hold off from publicizing this release for now. NEW: visual bbox enlarged for filters

The visual bounding box (which is the default bounding box type used by Inkscape) of an object with a filter applied now includes the expanded area of the filter. For single blur filter (such as the blur you apply with a slider in the Fill and Stroke dialog), this expands the bounding box by 2.4*radius; although theoretically, blur is infinite, this is the distance at which the opacity of the object drops below the perceptibility threshold of our renderer. For all other filters, the area is expanded by the relative amounts you specify on the "Filter general settings" tab of the Filter Effects dialog. Only visual bounding box is affected; if you use geometric bounding box, you will notice no change in most cases. However, the Export bitmap dialog always uses the visual bbox for selection export area; this means that you can now export a blurred object to bitmap without any clipping of the blur. -- bulia byak Inkscape. GSoC '08 proposal

Hi all, In the last two years I have participated in GSoC working on Inkscape's PDF export/import features. This year I would like to participate again, wrapping up these :) My project proposal would be based around the previous two summer's work, mainly improving the PDF import and export extension. Regarding PDF import I propose: - to establish an embedded font framework, - to implement CMYK support as soon as we decide how we're going to need it :) - to fix bugs related to the PDF import extension (free time activity?). The embedded font framework for the PDF importer would allow importing of text as either text, either path or as text with embedded SVG fonts. Using embedded SVG fonts could join Juca's SoC project of implementing this crucial missing feature in Inkscape. Some of the design work of this framework has already been done. Regarding PDF export I propose - to incorporate Cairo's user font support (soon to be released) to export SVG fonts, - to optimize the renderer for the now-improved Cairo PDF backend, - to fix various stuff related to not passing the SVG 1.1 test suite either due to missing stuff in Inkscape (like not handling the preserveAspectRatio attribute for svg:pattern and other elements) or due to bad implementation of the Cairo-renderer for PDF export, - and to fix bugs in LP in connection with PDF export. What do you think about these? Which ones are worth a SoC project? I would appreciate any suggestions :) Best regards, miklos

lib2geom integration - team effort possible?

Hello all, it seems there is quite a bit of interest to work on lib2geom integration. If I count well, there are 4 (Daniel Kraft, mgsloan, Marco Cecchetti and me). How much work do people think it will be? Perhaps we can use this many people working on it, but maybe it's hard to split it up in 4 well defined areas. On the other hand, with 4 people the chances of completely switching to 2geom are greatly increased. Searching for NR::Point gives 3000+ hits and NR::Matrix 1000+ hits... (only a few hits are from libnr). So just replacing libnr types with 2geom types is 4000 places that need to be checked; most of them just need a short glance I guess, but still. I like the team approach a lot, but don't know how to split up the work. Njh mentions that perhaps it is inefficient to initially split things up. Regards, Johan

Bugfix Patch for the Print Dialog

Hi All, I've just fixed a very minor problem with the print dialog which allowed it to fall underneath the inkscape desktop window in Win32. I've already applied the change to trunk, but I'm just wondering should this fix be applied to the 0.46.X series of branches? If so, can someone do that for me. Thanks Joel

Toolbar problem: action missing

I had troubles with the toolbar, so I decided to get a clean svn checkout, get the latest devlibs and do a clean build. Calligraphic presets

Hello list again, I sent my patch to Alexandre P. for him to commit it. It's a naïve implementation for the low hanging https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/171255 . It's really nothing but I like the calligraphic tool a lot better with this small adjustment: I added 4 icons for dip, pen, brush and reed in the toolbox with hard coded matching settings. Clicking one button sets the calligraphic tool with the matching presets. I also removed the reset button (the default settings are the dip settings) On the negative side, the toolbox gets very very long, and there is no way to customize those presets, but I think those are quite sane. If you want to suggest more presets, ore some improvements, or your disagreements, please go. Aubanel.

Inkscape Font Sizes

Hi all, I am a new user of this forum and also new to inkscape. I have an issue to resolve about font sizes in inkscape which is as follows; As far as i know, Inkscape uses SVG standard units (px) internally, even for fonts. And here arises the problem: Everybody is used to interpret font sizes as pt (the font size 10 I use for this mail is actually 10pt!). As Inkscape interprets (and stores) the font sizes in px (that is: smaller), a 100% print of fonts from Inkscape will yield smaller characters than with probably any other application around. Any help and directions about this issue is welcome. Actually i am a java developer, i downloaded the source code and prepared the environment on eclipse. But i do not know how to approach the problem and where to start. Thanks to you all.

Idea: Make all transforms (scale/rotate/shift/skew) available for editing nodes.

Currently, The transforms only work when selecting an item (with the select tool). But it would be nice to have them for nodes as well. Select several nodes, all you can do is move them. It would be nice if I could select some nodes and scale them about the center of the selected nodes, or rotate them, and not scale/rotate the entire object, just the selected nodes. Access of extensions to the root node

Dear all: A while ago, I started looking into a method for using Inkscape for presentations. The result of my efforts are now published as JessyInk on a Google Code page (http://code.google.com/p/jessyink/). The system works by incorporating a JavaScript into the SVG image. If viewed in a browser with SVG and JavaScript support, the script causes every layer to be displayed as a slide and connects them with transitions. Later I also added other features like an index sheet and slide numbers. At the moment, incorporating the script and defining transitions and slide numbers can be done form inside Inkscape, which I think is an important point, so that people don't have to switch programmes constantly. However, it involves editing the SVG file in the XML editor, which is very inconvenient for most users. Before working on further features, I wanted to create an Inkscape extension to provide a convenient way for people to add the necessary JavaScript to the SVG image and have an "onload"-attribute added to the root node to load the initialisation function when the image is loaded into a browser. Writing a small C++ programme to add the script was straight forward. The only problem I am experiencing is that the required "onload"-attribute of the root node is not copied into the SVG file Inkscape uses after the extension exits. Having a quick look at the source code, it seems to me that only the "width" and "height" attributes are copied. I am curious why it was decided not to copy the other attributes of the root node from the SVG files that are returned form extensions. I think it would be a neat thing to do, but there might be good reasons why this is not a good idea. Furthermore, I would like to ask, if there is another way to add attributes to the root node using an extension. Thanks in advance! Cheers, Hannes

Anouncing New Extension: Alphabet Soup

Hi All, Thought you might all be interested to know that I've just submitted a new python extension: Alphabet Soup. Alphabet Soup is a vector/SVG derivative of Matt Chrisholm's orignal GPLed raster script (from here http://www.theory.org/artprojects/alphabetsoup/main.html ). In simple terms Alphabet Soup makes a soup out of your alphabet. Type a string into it, and it will render the characters of that string, but with the strokes and serifs etc all mixed up. This is all achieved by a set of rules which control how the algorithm combines together the pieces of the Computer Postmodern Font (<-- that's one of Matt jokes, get it??). Try it out - or see the attached SVG. Obviously this script's usefulness is quite limited, but it is sorta fun and creative - might help new users fall in love with inkscape. In a while I might roll out an extra function carried over from the Matt's original script, which allows unreadable characters to be generated completely randomly - rather than as variations of normal latin characters. This extra function when it comes will allow the script to make totally alien writing. All the best Joel

Ohloh Widgets

Hi All, I don't know if any of you have played around with ohloh.net at all - I have; it's kinda cool. Anyway, for those that don't know, it indexes source control repositories of open source projects, so as to produce interesting metrics of the total work done on whole projects, and the contributions made by individual developers. So inkscape has 45 developers, 793034 lines of code, which would have cost an estimated 220 person years to produce at cost $12,112,544. Cool huh? Ohloh has a cool feature where you can put a little badge on the project home page that tells people this info: http://www.ohloh.net/projects/69/widgets Some projects have used this just for the hell of it, others have used it as a way of encouraging people to donate e.g. wine-door.org! GSoC requirements / expectations

Hi, I'm interested in applying to GSoC for Inkscape this year. While I don't have much experience with graphics on the implementor's side so far, I'm interested in learning about this; thus Inkscape is an interesting project. Mostly the lib2geom-task sounds nice; do you have some more specific information, what would you expect from a student to take it on? Does programming experience suffice (well, I probably also have some basic understanding of linear algebra and/or other mathematical concepts which might be used there) to get one started, or should I already know something about Inkscape (more than as user) or computer graphics / 2d vector graphics? Well, assuming SVG is also available as export (which it probably should if it can give you the possibility, as with other formats, to export only a part of current drawing) you could just export your work regularly and the result would be the same. One could even imagine having things such as special expressions in the export dialog name which would transform into unique characters e.g. massive_project_%n.svg which would give massive_project_1.svg then massive_project_2.svg and so on. (or you could take advantage of the text-based nature of svg and use a version control system but that's a whole other story ;) ) Bulia, are you already working on this or should we open a blueprint to summarize the ideas and opinions? I'm going to argue for the shortcut, in part because the one for "Save a copy" is already there, and in part because the incremental copy one will save a lot of trouble (clicking or entering, switching focus - adds up if you do it a lot). And besides, the point of these was also to have preset options inputted to the export dialog so that they work painlessly, instead of changing all kinds of stuff for each type of copy-save or export you want to do. Inkscape stopped working one day

I only got inkscape a month or so ago, I followed the simple instructions for compiling inkscape 0.45 for OSX. It worked fine (or as well as any program using X11, all flickery etc.) I didn't use it that much though. then a few weeks later I decided to boot up inkscape only to find that the icon appears on my dock, but it doesn't do anything. X11 doesn't launch, nothing happens. It doesn't seem to be working either, as it doesn't slow down the computer at all. Even if I open up x11 first inkscape still doesn't run. I've tried the irc channel but nobody there seems interested at all. If someone here could make a suggestion I'd be greatful. Alexander P.S. I did try reinstalling it, using Macports this time, with the same result. Hi, I am very surprised to discover that three of the patterns Inkscape has included in the Fill and Stroke dialog are not public domain. The only way a user can see this is to look directly at the SVG content, either through a text editor or the XML Editor dialog. I think that this is going to create large scale violations of the licenses as the average user will have no idea that they are using licensed images. Recent /src/bind check-ins

Hi all, again. Sorry about the large check-ins in the bind/java directory recently. But a large portion of them are the "official" svg-dom Java interfaces from w3c.org. These are necessary for us to provide a compliant DOM interface for scripting and other things. But as soon as we discover what all interface files we need, they will be compiled and placed into a jar file and removed from the source tree. I'll probably be done stubbing out the org.inkscape.dom.svg.*Impl.java files by the end of the week. There are -hundreds- of files, but most are quite small. Those who know Java know that each public class needs its own file, regardless of how small it is. But some of the recent posters might be happy to know that the interfaces also include SMIL and DOM Events, which should simplify animations quite a bit. And collaboration, too. Anyone doing automake stuff for javac might want to comment it out for a few days, until bind/java/org/inkscape/dom/svg can compile cleanly. And note that although the binding will be done with Java, we don't expect anyone to actually write any Java code. Rather, this is just the glue so that we can run VM-hosted interpreters such as Jython, JRuby, and Rhino(JS). So... "Pardon our dust", but I promise that it will be cleaned up in a few days. Scripting will be fun, I promise. :-) bob

Hi all, With Inkscape 0.46 wrapping up, it's time to look forward to our next release, 0.47, and our plans for its development. When we started Inkscape, we began with a codebase with lots of potential but with some architectural limitations that we've never quite resolved. Inkscape has grown rapidly, especially thanks to Google's Summer of Code program. Unfortunately, while we've gained a lot of new features, it hasn't addressed the underlying issues - and in some cases has exposed new problems. Inkscape's also been extremely successful at gaining a lot of contributors, yet this comes with a price: Stylistic differences, accidental code duplication, unfinished code, obsoleted code, etc. What will the codebase cleanup work entail? The work will range from straightforward "grunt" work like making some simple code changes to all files in the codebase, to meatier work like abstracting widely used code into a more concise and powerful algorithm, to advanced work such as extracting distinct code into independent code packages. To boil this down into five high level objectives: 0. Complete some of the big architectural refactoring efforts 1. Reduce source code line count 2. Break useful code out into stand-alone libraries 3. Increase code stylistic consistency 4. Make the codebase more convenient to code in Now, architectural reworkings can often risk incur massive breakages since fundamental pieces of the code are being changed. In order to minimize this, I'd like to suggest the following principles: * Always keep the tree buildable * Do major refactorings in small steps * Hold code review parties with 2-3 others to brainstorm * Drop copied-in codebases in favor of external dependencies * Make sure every function you touch has some doxygen comments Further, this kind of work can go on indefinitely without a clear stopping point, so I think for this release we should use a schedule with a date-based stopping point. This will help everyone know how they should time their work. Mar 10 Release 0.46. 0.47 Refactoring / Cleanup work begins Apr May Jun Jul 1 Completion of refactoring. Focus on Bug Fixing begins. Open 0.48 development tree early, for GSoC work. Aug Put out 0.47-pre releases. Sep Release 0.47. For reference, here are some key GSoC dates: May 26 GSoC work begins. Jul 14 GSoC midterm. First delivery of GSoC code Aug 18 GSoC work ends. This schedule permits us to focus exclusively on refactoring for several months, with a due date of July 1st to complete it. It uses a very early branch point, where we'll split into a stable branch for doing bug fix and release work, and a development branch for the GSoC students to use and for folks to continue right on with refactoring projects if they wish. Matrix multiplication reversed?

I am attempting to eliminate some redundant types, at the moment I have just tried eliminating NRPoint and NRMatrix in favour of NR::Point and NR::Matrix (patch available soon, I'm currently double-checking it). While looking at the matrix multiplication as defined in nr-matrix.cpp it looks like the definition is reversed (compared to the usualy mathematical definition). That is: A*B=BA ... The reason I think it is reversed is simply that if C=A*B (with C, A and B NR::Matrix's), then C[0] is the dot product between the first column of A and the first row of B (and similarly for the other elements). Am I missing something or is it indeed reversed? And if it is, is there a reason for this?

IO extensions should accept Writers

Hello I strongly believe Inkscape input and output extensions should accept Writers, not URIs. Currently much of Gnome-VFS boilerplate is duplicated between the extensions. If we used Writers instead of URIs: 1. The GnomeVFS code would be contained to a particular OutputStream, and could be easily replaced with GVFS once it's around. 2. Adding KIO support would be easy, just create a new OutputStream and use it. There could be a function that automatically creates the best OutputStream for a given platform. 3. Memory output ability - this is what I need for the clipboard work. 4. Windows-specific filename hacking could be contained to a particular OutputStream. TortoiseHG and TortoiseBZR exists, TortoiseGIT does not. I don't know the status of the first two compared to TortoiseSVN. On linux there are apparently many clients for all three systems (from the look on the wiki's of each project) but it is difficult to assess their quality from just screenshots. I have not seen any file browser integration (i.e. tortoiseSVN like) for linux, which unfortunately would probably be the most useful thing to have (I read some stuff about nautilus plugins but never saw anything actually working). For OS X there's shell integration and a bunch of clients for SVN, not much for the rest. But most of them are not good enough to avoid the command line altogether, so I personally don't even use one. There is however integration with a nice text editor (textmate) for svn, git, and mercurial. nothing I can see for bazaar. I'm not sure how critical having a good GUI is to get new developers. To compile Inkscape you eventually have to go to the command line and type stuff so... I agree however that TortoiseSVN probably makes the life of existing windows developers easier. For medium-large projects, I can't currently generally recommend hosted branches. What I would suggest is pushing to your own server, then registering the branch to be mirrored to Launchpad. Making hosted branches much faster, through sharing storage between them, is (imo) _the_ major goal for lpcode2.0. Implementation for it is well underway but not live yet. Hello, I'm looking to add (or looking for) a feature which shrinks text to fit inside of a text box (per line preferably or per box). I couldn't find a part of the SVG spec which covers this. Could an addition be made inside of the Inkscape namespace for an attribute that would fit on a <text> or <tspan> element (which applies the same font size to the whole block in which it was declared to fit the widest line, IOW if it is applied to <text> block the whole block would get that new font size or when applied to <tspan> it would be a line by line fit) which would be specified something along the lines of: fitText = none | increaseTextSize | decreaseTextSize What do you guys think? New extended input devices dialog

I've got the work-in-progress of the new input devices dialog in, but disabled. If anyone wants to give it a try, verbs.cpp needs USE_NEW_INPUT_DEVICES defined to switch it on. The main thing it will allow is that the test area should show device button and mouse events from devices, and should list all that are configured. Some feedback on what goes on there could be handy.

Renaming SPObjects proposal

Hello all, In spirit of codebase cleanup, I'd like to propose a simple renaming idea, to make things more clear to the developer (to me, at least :) I think, apart from C++-ifying, it would be a lot clearer when the SPObjects are renamed to either "SPObject" (the same :P) or "SVGObject". An example: SPPath represents <svg:path> in the SVG. When <svg:path> is added to SVG, Inkscape immediately generates an SPPath for it. I therefore propose to rename it to something that reflects this aspect of SPPath: that it is directly linked to something in SVG. SPDesktop for example is *not*. SPDesktop => SPDesktop, stays the same SPPath => SVGPath, meaning it represents some element in the SVG. SPShape => SVGShape (since all its derivates are SVG elements) SP_IS_PATH => IS_SVG_PATH (I never understood why it isn't named IS_SP_PATH) SPNamedview => SVGNamedview ? Now this one is a troublemaker. Because it is linked to <sodipodi:namedview> in the XML. I still think we should rename it with SVG up front, because it is linked to something in the SVG, does not matter what its name in XML is. Please, if this above all is non-sense, slanted or incorrect in any way, let me know! I do not know what to do with the filename. I propose to keep them sp-path and such, to avoid losing SVN history, which is absolutely unacceptable to me. (I don't know how to rename files in SVN, is that possible?) Note that we actually already have a file called svg-path... If no (negative) comments have reached me, I'd like to start this in a week or two. I really think it clears up things. As a file size optimization, Inkscape does not write into SVG some of the stroke properties if the object has stroke:none and some of the fill properties when it has fill:none. The only situation where this might affect you is if you remove stroke from an object and then turn it back on - the object will get the default stroke instead of the same as it had before. Also, in manually-edited SVG where a parent group has no stroke but sets some stroke properties to be inherited by its descendants, you will need to set stroke property to other than none on the group, and suppress inheritance with stroke:none on those children that don't need it. Specifically, if stroke:none, the following properties do not get written to SVG: stroke-width stroke-linecap stroke-linejoin stroke-miterlimit stroke-opacity stroke-dasharray stroke-dashoffset Note that this does not include marker properties, which means you can still have markers on a path without visible stroke. NEW: single-object and drawing PDF export

With PDF export, it is now possible to make the PDF page the size of the entire drawing, instead of the same as SVG page as before by the "Export drawing, not page" checkbox in PDF export options. Also, you can export a single object from a complex document to PDF if you specify the ID of that object in the "Limit export to the object with ID" field; the page of such PDF will be the same size as the bounding box of that object and will show only that object (all others will be hidden). The same capabilities are available from the command line by using --export-area-drawing and --export-id=ID parameters with --export-pdf (previously, they only worked for PNG export). -- bulia byak Inkscape. Hello Can anyone review the patch provided here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/195220 It moves the commandline option parsing from popt to GOption and shortens main.cpp a fair bit, but I'm not sure how does Inkscape open files - does it (1) use UTF-8 filenames or (2) filenames in the system encoding? This patch will be ok if 2 is the case, and I believe 2 is the standard practice with Glib. Hi all, I am temporarily disabling all snapindication, because it breaks the pen tool: enable grid, pick pen tool, click start point. then one can either click right away for the second point, the pen tool will then behave as if you dragged clicked it. If you wait for the snap indicator to go away, then click, it behaves as normal. I want to make a preference for it. Shall I make a whole new page for snapping preferences? (there are a lot of snap preferences, a whole bunch of them should be global prefs instead of doc prefs in my opinion.) Sorry, Johan

While looking into the OCAL import problem, I noticed that the rss feed used for the search: http://openclipart.org/media/feed/rss/<tag> always returns only 15 results at most. Can this limit be removed? With it, the feature is pretty useless because it shows only a small teaser of what's available. Change in alt-click, alt-drag, etc

I've gotten to a point in the tablet work where I'm ready do do more, but we'll need some fundamental changes to the internals. Basically we will need to revisit anywhere we are using GDK_MOD1_MASK, GDK_CONTROL_MASK, GDK_SHIFT_MASK, etc. The problem is that things are addressing the *physical* aspect of how things are triggered instead of the *logical* aspect. Up until now this has mainly affected Mac users. However, as I add more tablet support, I'm hitting up against that exact same set of limitations. For example, on other OS's the extra buttons on a Wacom tablet itself can be mapped to various modifier keys. On OS X I have the option to set things to shift, Option(alt), Control and Command. That works ok for now, since it lets me draw with only the tablet (since I don't need to touch the keyboard for those). It would be good to have that same freedom of workflow (or actually more) on Linux. But with Ubuntu, those four or eight extra buttons actually show up as buttons (numbers 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16 on an Intuos3). So if someone is using a standard stylus on the tablet instead of just 3 buttons they get 11! Now that is where we need to start being able to use those buttons. Instead of requiring an Alt-click to select under, for example, we could allow for Btn9+click to do the same function. One additional factor to consider is non-tablet input. There are many different devices that GIMP supports through other means. It would be good if our internals had support for that too. See the "Hardware Support" section at http://www.gimp.org/features/ So the first round is to do a survey of the code and figure out the smart way to replace instances of "is the user dragging while holding down the ALT key?" with "is the user doing a tertiary drag" or "is the user doing a smart-draw drag" instead. I also would want to get away from a single "the magic key" for everything, and allow for context-specific use.

Hi, a long-standing request was to create guidelines along the page borders of a document, see for example https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/171228 I just quickly implemented this because I needed it myself. :) Regarding the UI, I figured it would be best as an additional menu entry but couldn't really find an optimal place for it. For now I chose "Edit->Guides around page". Do people find this appropriate or are there better suggestions? Cheers, Max BTW, the RFE above suggests to implement snapping to page borders. I, too, think this would be very useful. It shouldn't be hard to do, should it? Maybe an easy exercise for Diederik? :)

Hi, Can somebody verify that they can create blended objects in new SVG files with the blend filter in 0.46? I can display and change blended objects in old SVG files but can't seem to get it working in new files. The old files were created when the Blend mode was in the Fill and Stroke dialog. Thanks, Tav

So I would vote for disabling node snapping for scaling, perhaps adding a checkbox to snapping option s, under Snap ndodes, "Snap nodes even when scaling in Selector" if people want to override that at the expense of not keeping the origin (as should be explained in the tooltip). Format of path names in SVG files?

Dear all, I recently noticed that embedded bitmaps in SVG files exported from (Windows) Corel X3 (=v.13) get the windows-typical backslashes rather than forward slashes in their file references in the generated SVG files. Therefore these files do not show the bitmaps when opened on Inkscape in Linux. It can be fixed by manually replacing the forward slashes by backslashes (which is tedious, however). Is that defined in the SVG standard? Is Corel goofing, or is inkscape not correctly considering files generated on a different platform? Shouldn't there be a platform-independent standard for the path names? PS: I recently got note from microUgly that the Windows version of Inkscape also produces backslashes.

Hi all, Currently, on windows, pythonw.exe should be used according to the code in /src/extension/implementation/script.cpp. However, build.xml only copies python.exe to the dist dir. The strange thing is: Inkscape needs python.exe, and does not want pythonw.exe. Something wrong with the #ifdef in script.cpp? It would be nice to fix this, because it removes the DOS popup when running an effect (nice for live preview). Thanks, Johan

0.46 release debate

Just my two cents worth on the release being held back by Windows; I think that, regardless of your position on Windows as an operating system, or Windows users, that putting out a release that is crippled would be downright humiliating to the *whole* Inkscape project. Let's ask, what is pushing us so hard to get the next release out? In a lot of these projects there is an impetus based on saving face, which is about bringing new features to fruition. IMHO, the saving face needs to be done by being a little patient, or at the very least not releasing 0.46 for Windows until it is pretty right. Again, what is the aim? Is it purely to further the name of Inkscape, or is there at least some desire to further SVG as a viable option is a largely proprietary world? I have heard that said a number of times, and used as a reason to include or reject features. This project is meant to be about a good SVG editor, and the rest is a nice by-product. Again, a good reason to hold off just a little. Let us also ask, if Linux users are so technically superior, aren't they already using the release candidate, which offers pretty much what the release will? Surely even the nightlies are very stable by now if all the bugs are ironed out. If so, in at least one sense who cares if there's a release if the RC is working and those who want the release are already using it! Linux users are well and truly used to beta and release candidates, and in fact the pure only use the bleeding edge stuff and look down on those who don't. Or are we next going to start railing against Ubuntu users for their lack of technical expertise, and because they need a packaged version? Afterall, isn't Ubuntu trying to attract that Windows-like person? Lets please hold off just a little, at the very least on the Windows release. For many Linux users it makes no difference whether or not there's an official release, because the pre2 package is stable. Automake files

Hi, I committed some more code tonight, including a new Makefile_insert in /src/bind. We played with this for hours trying to get the wrinkles out, and I -think- it works now. But if anyone has any problems, and they know how to work with automake, please look at /src/bind/Makefile_insert and where it is referenced by /src/Makefile.am. I think that the general rule is that every time a Makefile_insert is added, Makefile.am needs to be touched, or autogen run. Thanks. bob

Additions to build.xml

Hi all. This is just a note to let users of buildtool that I added a few things to build.xml to enable the building of the JVM binding. I commented the 3 places that allow /src/bind to be built, so it shouldn't break your builds. However, the new <javac> tag and and <property environment=""/> tag might require you to compile buildtool.cpp again to avoid parse errors. Let me know if you have any problems. bob(ishmal)

Extended input and "keys"

Hi, I'm trying to find out if anyone has successfully gotten the "keys" settings under the "Input Devices..." dialog to actually do anything. So far on Ubuntu 7.10 I've been unable to get them reacting with my Wacom. I'm very interested in anyone getting them to work, since I'm doing a replacement for that dialog and am almost ready to check in the first round. Thanks for any feedback.

Hi all, I just added the offset parameters in lpe-skeletal-stroke again. They can otpionaly be expressed in proportion of pattern size. Thank you for testing and commenting (is this the behaviour we want to have?). Dunno if there is the faintest chance to have this in some 0.46.x...(?) Inkscape development on Windows with Dev-C++

Hi, I am not sure if this would help, it has been a long time since I've done any development, especially on the Windows platform. However, I have invested a little time to attempt to get Inkscape to work with Dev-C++, and would like to see if anyone else is interested to share the experience. Thanks to JonY's help, I can get Inkscape to build with the buildtool (btool), so I used build.xml in the inkscape home directory as a reference to setup Dev-C++. Here is what I have done: - install Dev-C++ in c:\Dev-Cpp - I downloaded devcpp-4.9.9.2_nomingw_setup.exe from http://www.bloodshed.net/devcpp.html - install Inkscape in c:\inks1, and the support library c:\devlibs, I had the 0.45 plus the SVN as instructed by JonY - Note: Please keep in mind that the above locations are relative if you would like to use my Dev-C++ Configuration File and Project File. - Depends on how you install MinGw and GCC, you may wanted to add c:\mingw\bin in your PATH environment variable so Dev-C++ can get to GCC, may be in the future c:\devlibs can include GCC as well, I can only find gdb there only, we will leave it for the pros for those decision. - Create a folder "inkwin32" under c:\Dev-Cpp, and download this attached file "inkwin32_devcpp". It is the Dev-Cpp Configuration File. - Start Dev-C++, select "Tools]Files & Directories]", check "Use this alternate configuration file" and enter "C:\Dev-Cpp\inkwin32\inkwin32_devcpp". - Re-start Dev-C++, it will read in the configuration, which set up: - "Tools]Compiler Options]Compiler]" - the "compile" and "link" target from buildtool - "Tools]Compiler Options]Directories]" - the C++ include libraries. This I needed to check out again, some may be duplicated with the compiler option. I am not sure. - Download the attached project file "inkwin32.dev" to c:\Dev-Cpp. It is not complete, but has references all the source files in ~/src, ~/src/dialogs and ~src/ui. This is a easy to read text file, may be buildtool can create it in the future, if Dev-Cpp is the way to go. I stopped where I am so I can check out the compilation and see if this can be progress any further. - To compile, simply F9 ("Execute]Compile]"). I have marked the following files not to be included with the compile, (inkscape, inkview, interface, sp-fediffuselighting, sp-fespecularlighting, sp-filter, verbs, dialogs/filedialog-win32 (excluded in buildtool as well), dialogs/fill-style, dialogs/layer-panel), they caused the problem with magick with errors such as: - 'MagickExport' does not name a type - 'ClassType' does not name a type - 'Quantum' does not name a type which I cannot google meaning resolution. 0.46.x stable branch practices for bugs and patches

With 0.46.0 nearly finished, bug fixes for our release should be targeted to 0.46.1. For 0.46.x we want just critical bugs: crashes, data loss, security vulnerabilities, severe regression, failure to build, etc. To mark an acceptable bug as needing fixed in a Stable Release, please 'milestone' it to 0.46.1 (or 0.46.2, ...) To mark a patch for an acceptable bug as needing integrated into the Stable Release: 1. Attach the patch to the bug report. 2. Confirm that the fix is in the main development trunk. 3. 'Nominate it for release' in launchpad for 0.46.x 4. Include this information: * Justification why its release-critical * Steps to reproduce * Explanation of the patch * Discussion of regression potential (Translation updates only need to follow steps 1-3) This makes it easier both for us to review patches, and for distro packagers to cherrypick and backport them. Inkscape 0.46-final plans (March 10th)

ScislaC and I are quite pleased with how -pre3 has shaped up, and are making the last call for 0.46.0 bug fixes, translations, etc. We will tag 0.46.0 at UTC 04:00 Mar 11 2008. I've incorporated all patches sent to me or nominated for 0.46.x. If you have something I've missed, please get it to me this weekend. There are 7 milestoned bugs left: 3 are translations, 3 are windows-specific, and 1 has a patch that just needs a quick test. The translation patches I trust will be squared away in the coming days. Bug 189432 has a fix committed to trunk for upside down text with PDF, that just needs checked and I can commit the patch. For any remaining translation work, please arrange to get it incorporated in the release branch by March 10th. For the 3 windows bugs, progress has been slow on these. The consensus from the lengthy "0.46 release debate" thread is to tag 0.46.0 for Linux so we can get the release into Ubuntu and Fedora (which have a drop-dead date of March 13th for getting new Inkscape incorporated), but hold off on PR two weeks to give the extra time for Windows developers, because we would prefer to have full platform support for maximum PR effectiveness. If the Windows bugs are not sufficiently resolved by March 24th, we'll proceed with 0.46.0 being a non-Windows release, and hope they can be addressed in time for 0.46.1. Bryce

The first part is about stacking lpe's from the UI viewpoint. Individual effects specifications are also collected, including propositions of new effects... (notice that things are not supposed to be developped in a short term; in particular, handling full svg data as parameter or output might require a lot of work!...) Quickly: When you hover over a path in nodetool, it highlights itself briefly like a helperpath. (this means it only works for things that have a helperpath: paths only for now... work in progress i guess) When you leave the object with the mouse, it hides instantly. I haven't add preferences yet, so you cannot turn it off now, sorry; it's probably pretty annoying if you don't want it. What preferences do people want? - on/off - flash time? - flash color? ( i don't know how to XOR it, so right now it is invisible for red stroked paths ) - show knots aswell? Thanks for your input, and thanks to Josh for the excellent idea :-) Johan

Just wanted to let you know that I sent an email yesterday to the Pango mailing list, asking about the possibilities of expanding the fonts Pango can represent beyond what CSS can represent. Haven't heard back yet, and have no idea if they will tell me this is technically impossible or philosophically undesirable. However, if I get good news, this may mean I can help expand it and then support more fonts in Inkscape as a result. Will keep you updated. Gail

I am trying to build Inkscape 0.46pre2 after updating the portfile of the 0.45 version (<http://trac.macports.org/projects/macports/browser/trunk/dports/gnome/inksc…>) which works flawlessly, including the Python plugins. Hi Diederik and others, First of all, I am very sorry if I broke compile on Linux, please fix what needs to be fixed, I cannot check if it works! (makefile?) I have just committed a new feature: temporary canvasitems. Now, it is possible to create a canvasitem, and pass it to SPDesktop saying it should be displayed for a certain timelength. When that time has elapsed, the object is automatically deleted. To make a canvasitem temporary, do this: spdesktop->add_temporary_canvasitem(canvasitem, 2000); This will destroy the canvasitem automatically after 2000 milliseconds. One can also prematurely delete the canvasitem (handy for showing snapping). One should do this: Inkscape::Display::TemporaryItem * tempitem; tempitem = spdesktop->add_temporary_canvasitem(canvasitem, 2000); And then later on to remove the item: spdesktop->remove_temporary_canvasitem(tempitem); It is perfectly safe to call this function even after the 2 seconds have elapsed, because it checks whether the object has already been deleted or not. In order to demonstrate and test the code, I have enabled the test LPEs, and added a Point parameter to lpe-Stacktest that is briefly flashed on-canvas when you press the edit oncanvas button. Draw a freehand path, apply lpe-'doEffect stack test', then press the edit oncanvas button next to the 'test' parameter; it should show a cross at the location of the parameter oncanvas. I have tested a bit, it *seems* bug-free... :) Special request to Diederik: Can you use the code from /live_effects/parameter/point.cpp, method param_editOncanvas, to flash the location of a snap ? This was my main motivation for writing all this! I hope people find other interesting things that can be briefly shown on canvas; like an arrow pointing to the parent object of a clone? :-) Cheers, Johan

You are correct - Win32 printing really is broken!

Seeing as I am a win32 developer - albeit with not much time, I just hooked up my old printer to investigate the notorious win32 printing bug. I see the problem - wierd blackness in both bitmap and vector mode, and messed up polygons in vector mode. I guess I'm stating the obvious here. I'm not sure what to suggest - this seems like a renderer (cairo?) problem to me. If cairo is broken, then we must either push through fixes to cairo, or revert back to the old system. I imagine cairo fixes will be too slow, so I suggest we revert printing to the pre-November version for win32 only, until we can get a proper fix in time for 0.46.1. What do people think? +1 for releasing all platforms at the same time - we need to make as a big a media rumble as we can. Joel

splitting PO files

Hi, Here is an question that is triggered by a recent request in inkscape-translator@...233... While doing refactoring in 0.47, should we probably try to split translatable messages into several ones? E.g.: po/ po-lpe/ po-extensions/ po-tools/ ? Inkscape has grown *a lot* over the 0.46: amount of translatable messages has jumped from 2480 in 0.45.1 to 3465 in 0.46. While supporting one large already existing PO file is probably OK for translators (not quite correct for the case I started this email with), creating a whole new translation will be psychologically difficult at the same time. I've seen this with Xara Xtreme for Linux which had ~5700 messages last time I checked - and the pace of translation work into various languages was dead slow. On the other hand, I sometimes find myself jumping between po/ru.po and po-libgimp/ru.po and suspect that this will apply to Inkscape to some extent in case we choose this path. Anyway, what do you think? Alexandre

I really needed this feature. Good work! A couple of thoughts about clipping paths and masks. -Clipping should be also placed in the right-click menu on the canvas. It's a tool used very frequently and since it hasn't a keyboard shortcut (please correct me if I'm wrong) it's kind of "hidden". A more accesible place would be welcome. -Clipping path and mask nodes should be considered in snapping. Currently they aren't and it's very difficult to manually place clipped objects in a specific place when snapping is needed. -Finally, I agree with the idea to make the clip and mask editable directly from the path edit tool. It would be fast and intuitive. What do you guys think? If you agree with these ideas I'll fill the proper bug or RFE.

When you reinstall windows the mbr (master boot record) is re-written and you loose the boot manager (usually GRUB). The data and partitions are there, but the boot record only has the information to boot windows. You have to reinstall grub mounting the partition with the LiveCD or use an excellent tool called Super Grub Disk (SGD) which is easily found googling. SGD lets you create a diskette or CD that boots and give you tools to revover the lost grub. Good luck!

In my honest oppinion, Inkscape 0.46 for Windows shouldn't be released until the printing issue is fixed. 0.46 may be released later, or event not be released, then release 0.47 directly. Being a linux user I see frequently software packages that aren't available for linux in the latest versions (skype, adobe reader and flash player, etc.). Even some open souce packages are released for windows first and we have to wait. So I don't think it's a big deal to opt for not releasing 0.46 due to its platform specific bugs. Windows users will keep using 0.45 or use devel compilations while they wait. If 0.46 is ready for Linux or other platform, then release it. A new stable version, at least in this platform will keep dragging attention and will show the project's health. Gez.

Strings to translate in bitmap effects.

Hi! I was trying to review bitmap effects and found two where translation is not used properly. In /src/extension/internal/bitmap there are two files: addNoise.cpp and channel.cpp where strings are properly marked for translation (and thus are in the .po files) but do not appear to be used. I thought it would be nice to fix this for 0.46 since the strings are already there but I can't trace where the XML is used to create the UI. It seems like the items for Combo Box are not being created with a call to gettext. This could potentially benefit more then just those two effects and would also allow for the combox box items in the idx files to be translatable. Windows Dev Build Feb 26 08 - improvements and problems...

Hi, Just writing with some experiences of the latest Dev build for windows. 1. It seems to be rendering a bit faster lately. Probably due to Bob's hard work with dll's and the latest Cairo. Thanks! 2. PDF output seems to be doing gradients and transparency quite well (as vector art not raster), which is great :-D, but still not blurs :-((. Again probably due to Cairo improvements. Getting close! 3. The windows dialogues have kicked in I notice. Trying to view a thumbnail causes a crash on my system. I also miss the GTK ability to store your own folder shortcuts on the side. Have to find some windows program to do that! 4. With the windows dialogues (or perhaps related to Alexandre's changes - see http://www.nabble.com/Regarding-WMF%2C-PS-based-AI%2C-SK-and-FIG-files-supp… here ) the saving sequence seems to be messed up. 4a. If I select save as PDF via Cairo, it goes for the selection immediately below, which is PS. If I select EMF, it saves it as POV. Whatever I want, I have to go for the one above, but you can't now re-select Inkscape SVG. Always one step below, unless I just hit save, which does whatever was last without problem. 4b There's a weird loop going on when saving, which I think is related to the bug above. See my comment at step 4 below. 1. Save something as an Inkscape SVG (default). 2. Save as PDF or whatever else. 3. Save again as Inkscape SVG and try to close Inkscape. 4. Inkscape complains 'The file "{filename.svg}" was saved in a format that may cause data loss! Do you want to save the file as an Inkscape SVG?' options - Close Without Saving, Cancel, Save as SVG. (I think this is caused because now when you select Save As -> Inkscape SVG, you're actually choosing Plain SVG (the one below), which Inkscape thinks will cause data loss). 5. Click ' Save as SVG' 6. Back to step 3 and infinite loop - must select 'Close Without Saving' to escape the loop. Obviously some good steps forward have been made, but a few minor problems have crept in. I hope this is helpful. Change to NRRect

I just did a change to NRRect's default constructor. Prior to this it was leaving all of its members uninitialized, and valgrind found that some like this were being checked for 'empty'. So random behavior could have been seen. I also did a fix under display, but that was an array index going below zero, but I think the loop would have exited anyway, so I don't expect that change to really affect the program. I'm mainly concerned that some bugs might have been caused by 'new' NRRect variables being seen as non-empty and now they'll show up as empty. BTW, these were the first two things I found by getting to run under Valgrind and seeing what was reported right off the bat. I'll probably try to actually explore the app a little more under valgrind, but I think these two were a good start.

Back in 2004, Peter Moulder added assert_close to nr-matrix.cpp and used in it several matrix operators in libnr (such as multuplying a matrix by a scale, etc). All it does is just checks if two matrices are "close enough". I am going to remove this assert because: - what it tests is simply computer arithmetic, not something Inkscape itself can get wrong. I don't think it can discover any bugs for us. - used in basic operators, it likely slows the program down for no gain whatsoever. Unless there are objections, of course. -- bulia byak Inkscape. Dev opinions needed: when to activate SPDesktops?

Hi all, during my investigation for the cause of bug #195373 [Creating a new document breaks a 3D box] I have found that when a new desktop is created, it isn't automatically set active right away. Namely, in sp_desktop_widget_new() the function inkscape_add_desktop() is called, but in this function the new desktop is *appended* (instead of *prepended*) to the list of existing desktops. Thus the following 'if' construct if (DESKTOP_IS_ACTIVE (desktop)) { ... } is not triggered (except for the very first desktop). I wonder if this is intentional. Well, it probably is, but why? :) Is there any reason why new desktops shouldn't be activated upon creation? The current behaviour is what's causing bug #195373 since the perspectives in the _old_ desktop/document are updated according to the toggle states of toolbar buttons in the _new_ desktop. There might be other ways to fix this but the easiest I have found is to simply change g_slist_append (inkscape->desktops, desktop); to g_slist_prepend (inkscape->desktops, desktop); in line 891 of inkscape.cpp. However, this would render the above-mentioned 'if' construct obsolete and I guess that there was a reason for introducing it in the first place. But since inkscape_add_desktop is not called from any other place except sp_desktop_widget_new() it looks like a rather safe thing to do. I committed this change to SVN in rev. #17510. Please tell me if there are any objections or concerns that this could break other things. I will then revert it and try to find a different fix. Otherwise this should go into 0.46 as well (I'll file a bug in LaunchPad as soon as I know that it's safe to do). Thanks, Max

Regarding WMF, PS-based AI, SK and FIG files support

Hi, During last weekend I played with UniConvertor and found out that: 1) Its support for WMF is better than the one of wmf2svg simply because objects are editable at once. You can also have a look at feature support tables at [1] and [2]. 2) Old PS-based Adobe Illustrator files look pretty cool, though the ones created with Freehand still don't open correctly. What doesn't work is importing text when fonts in use are absent. UC just drops such text objects. I'm talking to Igor about fixing it. We can have this by just replacing the converter call to cdr2svg.sh which is already written in a universal way. This implies no strings changes at all. If we look a little further, we can ditch the Sketch/Skencil dependency (skconvert, actually) for opening .sk files (UniConverter actually used to be part of Sketch not so long time ago, thus it's same as skonvert in this case). Same probably applies to XFig dependency (fig2dev utility) for opening .fig files, but the very few XFig 3.2 files I had around didn't work at all with UC. I'm talking to Igor about fixing this as well. What is beautiful about this approach is that we will have all these things for free on _all_ platforms, since we are shipping UniConvertor for both Linux, Mac and Windows in 0.46. Here is my proposal: 1. Rename cdr2svg.sh to uniconv2svg.sh 2. Fix ai_input.inx, cdr2svg.inx, sk_input.inx and wmf_input.inx to use it. Probably fig_input.inx too, if a bugfix UC release is out before we package 0.46. Is this acceptable during Hard Freeze? Later we could also add extensions to support CDT (CorelDRAW templates), CCX (Corel Compressed Exchange), CMX (Corel Presentation Exchange), CGM (Computer Graphics Metafile), AFF (Micrografix Draw) and SK1 files the very same way (I've already written .inx files). Inkscape / GSoC '08 proposal

Hi all, I'm hearing some rumblings that Google will be running their Summer of Code project again this year, and want to put out a proposal for discussion about how we should handle it this year. SoC has been great for bringing new ideas to Inkscape from a number of sources, yet often the newly written code needs follow up work to sand rough corners or to make it fit more correctly within our architecture. However, between SoC mentoring during the summers, and release work at other parts of the year, core developers haven't really had a good solid amount of time to focus on this digestion. There is concern that another summer's worth of code would put us further behind in this regard. Of course, given the major benefits that have accrued from our past involvement, it would be a shame to have to sit it out! But I think there is a compromise which will solve this, if we set two criteria for this year's involvement: 1. All Inkscape GSoC projects this year must be implemented as extensions, with no changes required to Inkscape's core 2. All mentoring be done by developers who will not be focusing on the 0.47 codebase refactoring efforts. (In particular, developers with good extension development experience.) We will limit the number of candidates we accept to the number of mentors available. I think this approach will prove valuable in a few different ways. First, extension writing is likely going to be a much easier learning curve for students than learning to build and work within inkscape's codebase. Second, it keeps their code distinct and discrete from inkscape's codebase, avoiding any increase in 'entropy' in our core code. Third, it will help add value to our extension community, and give them resources to do achieve things that would have had trouble competing against core codebase feature priorities. Please let me know what are your thoughts on this proposal? If you support it and have written extensions before, would you also be willing to be a mentor? Bryce

Toolbar Button/Icon question

Hi, Sorry if this sounds like a silly question, but is there any way to vary the number of buttons that appear on the Commands Bar? I know I can hide the bar entirely, but I'd like to remove the rightmost one or two buttons if possible. Any way to do that? I guess I could always poke around the source code and remove them that way, but I wanted to avoid that if possible. Richard

Johan, thanks for adding that, but I think a menu command which unexpectedly switches tools is not a good idea. No other menu commands do that, it just does not fit into the UI we have. I propose that instead of a command, we just add a toggle button to the Node controls bar which would switch it to editing clip/mask and back (and would be grayed out if there's no clip/mask). -- bulia byak Inkscape. Does anyone know why I might be suddenly (and seemingly randomly) having problems compiling old revisions under Windows? For instance, I checked out Rev. 15430 fresh and get an error message at the beginning of the compile, as per below. The weird thing is that I was able to compile this earlier - this is the last revision I committed anything before tref stopped working... The current revision and some interim ones also work. Geo_Inkscape wiki page

For any SVG mapping fans, I've started a geo_inkscape wiki page where we can put down all kinds of information of how to use Inkscape with mapping, GIS, etc. I've just thrown down a few bits of info - so the page is rough and needs lots of work - feel free to contribute. At SCALE we had a chance to meet and talk with some of the Open Street Map folks. They are already using Inkscape to create their mapping tiles. I'll try to get some more time to flush out some tasks that can allow both projects to integrate better. Meanwhile I've posted a blueprint for a KML-SVG translator as a GSoC project. This would enable users to draw cool, scalable, geo-referenced icons and overlays in Inkscape and add to Google Earth or Google Maps - it would most likely involve XSLT work - any interested students ?

Still having problems explicitly adding a parameter to the extension's command line. I suppose resorting to a separate inx/py set may be the only option. Hi all, Google has officially announced the 2008 summer of code project this year. Project applications will be accepted starting March 3rd. A first step is to gather ideas of projects for students. Hi all, I am hoping to try and get in on GSoC again this year because it would seem that having it as a "job" is the only way to ensure I have time to contribute during school (boooo!). Ideally, what I would like to do is continue with the font work I was doing before; that is, trying to support non-CSS fonts. This would require the ability to contribute and change Pango, and I have no idea if they would want to do that. So I will soon try to talk to those guys and see what they think. If that doesn't work out, I would be interested in working on anything text, including UI if so desired. Think about what items might be desired and that are GSoC'able (something like underlines, for example, has the potential to be too much to get something bug free ready, not sure). As a tref update, I have at least narrowed down the problems to be between a couple of my unrelated commits. Good in the sense that it probably means I didn't create the issue, but bad because that makes it that much harder to find the exact cause. Will be spending some more time compiling and recomipling tonight. Gail

How to change notification settings in Launchpad?

Hi all, sorry if this is a dumb question but how can I change my Launchpad settings so that I do not receive an email each time someone works on one of the bugs? Is this the default behaviour for members of the "Inkscape Bug Team" group? Currently I am sent a notification for each and every change, but I'd prefer not to get my inbox flooded and rather browse the list myself when appropriate. It may be just my infamiliarity with Lauchpad (and lack of time for detailed investigation), but I wasn't able to find out how turn this off. Thanks in advance. Max

Speaking of GSoC work needing polishing... It has recently come to my attention that the tref elements are not working. To be honest, I am very surprised because the last time I looked at this, which was when I committed the work 6+ months ago, it was working. Not sure what happened or when. I think it is very important to fix this for the release, as I had entered release notes and provided samples way back when. I am looking at this over the next few days and will submit a patch that could be tested and hopefully submitted to the release branch. I was just wondering - is there any way to know when it stopped working? For example, are the SVG compliance test results archived, and if so where? It should have passed sometime in the summer and stopped since then (if it never passed then I'll be really worried!). Thanks! Gail

Proposal: Inkscape 0.47 Extensions Package

I've been kicking this idea around since the last release, and would like to put it out for discussion for us to do in 0.47... Extensions have proven to be a great way for people to contribute new ideas to the project, but unfortunately the maturity, quality, and maintenance put into the extensions can vary quite a bit. Unfortunately, a consequence is that they complicate our core Inkscape codebase releases. * Old extensions sometimes break, but their original developers aren't available to fix them. It's a regression, but is it important enough to block the release? * Extensions are quick to write, yet having to wait a full Inkscape development cycle to get them formally distributed to users seems rather excessive. * While extensions won't make Inkscape crash, they certainly can have serious bugs, but it's currently hard to roll fixes out to users. We wouldn't roll a new point-release of inkscape just to fix extension bugs. It seems that a logical solution would be to establish an inkscape extensions package separate from the Inkscape core, that could be released with more or less frequency, as appropriate. Along with that would be an 'unstable' extension package, that would contain scripts not as ready. I think our existing release processes could handle this additional package; it'd just be one additional piece to rev and upload. However, I would love to see a new team of extension writers form around this and take ownership of maintaining it and producing releases as appropriate (and hopefully more frequently than the core codebase). New win32 lib bundle with Dwarf2

Hi, all, I just uploaded a new lib bundle on the server. It has been over a year since I last updated the C++ libs. I also have wanted for months to move from the existing setjump/longjump (sjlj) exception handling to the new (to MinGW) Dwarf2 EH. Gcc has had Dwarf2 for years, but only recently has MinGW started providing it. It should allow better backtraces and slightly smaller binaries. I made a build with it manually this morning: http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32/Inkscape-0710221807-dw2.7z I assembled some MinGW binaries to make this working compiler: http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32libs/mingw-4.2.1-071022-dw2.7z ...and here is the new bundle. http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32libs/gtk210-071022-dw2.7z Note that the C++ compiler, library bundle, and Inkscape build must all be either sjlj or Dwarf2. You can't mix them, else there will be a linking error. I also added a version of build.xml to the trunk to handle this, build-dw2.xml. This should keep from breaking everyone else's build. To use it: ./btool -f build-dw2.xml Of course there is a corresponding cross-compiler: http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32libs/xmingw-4.2.1-dw2.tar.bz2 ...which made this build, which looks ok, but I haven't run yet: http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32/Inkscape0710230156.7z It looks larger, but none of the DLLs have been stripped yet. The following scripts are available for your use: * svnnotify: Sends email notifications of changes made during a SVN commit. Mac OS X printing/packaging issue...

Hi all, I've been using the 0.46pre2 release on os X 10.4.11 PPC for a few days now and am having issues with printing using the .app bundle generated by the included bundling script. Here is the scenario: After building from source I can run the compiled binary (not the packaged .app) from the command line and printing works as expected. However after using the included script (osx-app.sh) to bundle the binary into a double-click-able .app the print dialog shows no printers. I've also tried launching the binary inside the .app from the command line (i.e. inkscape.app/Contents/MacOS/Inkscape) but the same issue with the print dialog exists. It seems that this is most likely an issue with the packaging script, but I could be wrong. I can provide more info if you let me know what you would be useful. Hi, I was trying to save a simple image tonight so I could play with it in the gimp. It's a rectangle, white, with a drop shadow. If I try to save as an xcf for the gimp I get the following error. Changing build.xml causes build.dep to be recreated, which is what makes it compile. The dialogs/filedialog-win32.cpp file is now gone, so the exclude line makes no difference whether it's there or not - I've now removed that line from the SVN; Thanks for spotting that! There is a filedialog-win32.cpp file, but that's completely different code now located in /ui/dialogs. Palette tweaks

crash on pdf/ps export

I found that an access to a NULL-pointer caused the crashes on pdf/ps export. The pointer access is in the file src/extension/prefdialog.cpp line 178 in the function: void PrefDialog::on_response (int signal) { The function was last edited by gouldtj as follow: r17821@...1818...: ted | 2008-01-31 12:59:57 -0800 Okay, I'm not 100% sure what all these changes are but I want to start working on this again from a checked in point. I'll fix the bugs from here. So if one can review the diff from 17244 to 16419. Right now I just test for NULL in that specific case I found. HTH, Adib.

Hi, Here <https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/188814> is a partial fix of #188814: object carrying a turbulence are now tranfsormed correctly. (they used to become more transparent). I have been looking at other effects that do not render properly when transformed, but I need help about the code: can someone help me with "area_enlarge"? -is the area in display coordinates? -how to interpret the filter parameters (for instance scale for displacement map) in these coordinates? PDF, CMYK and cairo

Hello all, I was looking at the cairo-pdf export code and wondered how hard it would be to output PDFs in CMYK(a) colorspace ? From what I've seen it shoudl be fairly easy on inkscape side. However the status of CMYK(a) support in Cairo looks unclear to me (found some references in cairo ML but nothing in the actual cairo headers, + a ruby (?) implementation for it). Does anyone have a some knowledge / pointers on that ?

Color management in win32

Could someone explain how to use new color management in Windows? I'm really not an expert on this, but as far as I understand the "color management profile" should be saved in some ICC file. In GIMP for example you have an option to load ICC profile from the file on the disk, but there is no such option in Inkscape. At least not in Windows build. Problems with translations - N_() and Q_()

Hi! I wanted to bring your attention to some internationalization issues I came across when fixing various bugs. I hope some clarification can be made so that we can avoid further problems. 1.) Using the N_ macro The N_ macro is used to mark strings as being translatable but does not translate them. It has to be used when strings can't be directly translated (most common in the string array initializers). So whenever N_ is added in the code - it needs another call to _() later in the code to actually perform the translation. There have been some circumstances before where this second call was missing and I will try and track if there are any more. Please note that I don't think the N_ macro cannot be simply substituted with, say Q_ (vide: rev. 17415 and panel.cpp) 2.) Using the Q_ macro I have a feeling there is some slight misconception of how this macro is supposed to work. The idea is that the original string is turned into "prefix|string" to make it unique and a call to _() is replaced with a call to Q_(). The Q_() macro itself will call _() (ie. gettext()). The Q_macro will also make sure, that where no translation is available the prefix will be strip from the untranslated text. Please note the attached patch for illustration where this would work OK but an extra call to _() can be avoided. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Hope this helps. Patch to issue warning when attempting to set or get a non-existent preference

Hi all, Currently when you try to access the value of a preference setting within Inkscape, no warning is issued if the requested preference doesn't exist. Instead, a default value provided by the caller is returned. This can cause bugs if there is a typo in the preference name, or if the pref is not created properly in src/preferences-skeleton.h. The latter problem caused the 'oversample bitmaps' preference to be broken for at least 2 releases (0.44 and 0.45) (bug 167824 and bug 168346). I wrote a patch to issue a warning when the requested preference doesn't exist, and found that this 'silent failure' behavior is actually used in a few places to allow debugging parameters to be passed in by manually adding items to your preferences.xml file. I saw warnings for 'options.filtertest', 'options.bulia', and 'debug.icons', but there may be more in code paths that I just haven't passed through yet. I can see 3 ways to address this usage while adding the new warning. I have implemented #3 in the attached patch. 1) Deprecate/disallow the use of the preferences file for passing in arbitrary debugging parameters. pro: "clean" con: would remove useful functionality; hard to systematically find all the debugging pref names 2) Introduce a flag in the preferences get/set functions that suppresses the warning. pros: debugging usage would be explicit; no changes to current prefs names con: would have to rewrite all callers 3) Do not issue a warning for prefs that begin with "debug.", and move existing debug prefs to this namespace (options.filtertest becomes debug.filtertest, etc.) pro: captures the developer's intent to use the pref for debugging, without having to rewrite function calls as in #2 con: developers who currently use these flags would have to manually change their preferences.xml files I chose to implement the warning in inkscape_get_repr in src/inkscape.cpp, rather than in the helper functions in src/prefs-utils.cpp, in order to avoid duplication. This may be a bit late for 0.46? Since it's just adding a warning, it seems like a low risk patch, but I don't have SVN access in any case, so will defer to the wisdom of the list... Thoughts/suggestions welcome: I'm new to this! -Tom

More z-order operations

Hi- I have been playing with more z-order operations. I wrote the restack extension I posted about a while back, and have been adding features... first arbitrary angle reordering, then radial reorderring, and most recently, I have (in my version) added some more basic z-order functions, such as reverse the selected objects z-order, randomize the z-orders, and shift (rotate?) the z-orders. All these options are making the single extension UI an ugly mess, as many of them have options that only apply to some of the choices. I am thinking of breaking it into three separate extensions. What is the policy for providing extensions like this? Currently I have it under Effects->Modify Path... but don't like that as it is really doesn't modify the paths, just changes the z-order. It seems more like the Object->Raise, Lower, Top, Bottom functions (though it always moves them to the top after adjusting the z-order). I am considering registering these as Object->Change Z-order->*** and having XX separate extensions (or can I have XX menu entries in one extension?) Right now I have: 1: Orthagonal (pick comparison point and 1 of 4 directions) 2: Arbitrary Angle (comparison point and angle slider) 3: Radial (comparison point and direction option-outward or inward) 4: Random (no options) 5: Reverse (no options) 6: Shift (+/- slider either in actual numbers or % of objects in the selection) Are there guidelines for how to best to do this? As its name suggests, the 3D Box tool makes it possible to create and edit the perspective of three-dimensional boxes. Gradient stops are depicted as nodes, and multiple nodes can be selected and moved simultaneously. Colour management has also been improved, with initial support for colour spaces other than sRGB, including Adobe RGB and calibrated CMYK. This makes it possible to use calibrated colour values, including CMYK values, that are preserved across applications. The new Paint Bucket Tool allows bounded areas to be filled with colour at the click of a mouse button. This new tool creates a closed-path based on the visible canvas and is useful for quickly colouring line drawings. The Gaussian Blue filter, introduced in Inkscape 0.45, was the first SVG Filter. Inkscape 0.46 expands on this with Offset, Blend, Diffuse Lighting, Specular Lighting and Turbulence primitives. There is also a new, dedicated user interface for creating and altering filters based on these new primitives. Finally, Inkscape 0.46 introduces workflow and user interface improvements. Dialogue boxes can now be docked and minimised to a side-panel, reducing visual clutter and making the relationship between documents and interaction choices clearer, especially when working on multiple documents in separate Inkscape instances. Bounding box calculation

Hi, It would be really nice if Inkscape would take into account the cap-end style of lines when doing bounding box calculations. Right now, it makes it *impossible* to have a 1px line both on the pixel grid on display and on the pixel grid when exporting the object when butt-cap cap style is applied. Now I have to create invisible objects to export these lines, and it's really tedious and a serious time-waster. You can't also simply set the Y coordinates (if vertical, X if horizontal) through the main toolbar because it results in misaligned pixels. It's a major PITA for me and I'm sure it is for others, it would really require a fix soon. Thanks, Pierre-Luc

I just submitted a patch (id: 1896251) to the patch tracker that changes Inkscape::SVG::PathString to generate the shortest possible path string with decent spacing (that is, it uses the same spacing rules as the old PathString). It does this by eliminating repeated operators when it can, as well as using relative coordinates if it helps. Using this patch I got file size reductions of about 10% on car.svg(z), the new about screen and some of my own files (I looked at both the uncompressed and the compressed svg's). To do this I opened the files, selected all objects and performed a translation of 0px on them, then saved the file (as uncompressed svg, and then again as compressed svg). The optimized path strings are about just as readable as the old ones (sometimes they're even easier to read). I would welcome any suggestions/comments.

Blank menu items

Hello, With svn 17242, selected menu items are blank for me on OS X (10.3). For example, in the attached image, the "Help" and "Tutorials" menu text is invisible. The application is still usable, but it's an annoying bug. I looked in launchpad and found old similar bugs like this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/168694 , which is marked as fixed. Does this sound familiar to anyone or does anyone know the root cause? Is this a gtk issue? Thanks! , John

Hi, Here are several more notes on current implementation of raster effects. 1. Terminology and hints. In some cases terminology used in effects coming from ImageMagick is not quite obvious. For instance, you might want to reread a course on math to understand what "Sigma" stands for in "Sharpen"/"Unsharp Mask" effects ;-) We might either rename some of the labels (not good for experienced ImageMagick users) or provide hints to explain the meaning of each option. 2. Raster effects are not the only ones to suffer from it, but here goes: effect dialogs inherit caption from menu item name. In several cases the caption is too long and is shrinked. This is not quite visually appealing. Two solutions comes to mind: 1) automatically resize dialog to match caption's length and 2) provide a separate string to dialog's caption which translators could try to make smaller. 3. Cancelling isn't working reliably. I run "Reduce noise" on a 2200x1500 picture and when I click "Cancel" nothing really happens. 4.Should we probbaly implement a "Resize" effect too? Alexandre

Release Wardens for 0.46

Hi all, Josh Andler (aka ScislaC) has agreed to take on the role of Release Warden with me for 0.46. For those who for whom this is their first release: When we're not in release mode, Inkscape development is left fairly free-form. In the run-up to a release, though, we gradually formalize and restrict work that goes on in the tree. When we hit Hard Freeze, things get quite restrictive, and in fact we switch to a model similar to the Linux kernel development process, with commits to the tree required to be authorized by two people(*) - who we call the Release Wardens. Each Release Warden serves for two consecutive releases. I worked on 0.45 and will do so again on 0.46; Josh will have this role for 0.46 and 0.47. [* - Since often a large chunk of the work late in the release is application of translation patches, we also typically delegate authority to one or two Translation Integrators to be able to commit submitted translation work freely in the po/ directory. I expect we'll do the same this release.] The primary job of the Release Wardens is to ensure that the releases' stability is high enough. They review bugs and decide which need to be fixed for the release, and follow up with bug assignees to ensure they get addressed quickly, or that they can be left as "Known Issues" in the release notes. When the Wardens reach concensus that Inkscape is "stable enough" in their judgement, the tree is tagged and their job is done. Josh and I will probably be splitting up the work such that he focuses a bit more on bugs/stability-testing, and I'll focus more on patch review/integration, but I'm sure there'll be some overlapping. C++ifying tools

Hi All, I'm just beginning to look at a strategy for implementing the fillet mini-tool. From my current understanding it would best to implement the tool with a tool context similar to all the other tools. Now looking at the code for the tools, they're currently all implemented in C with C pseudo-classes. I'm wondering is there any plan to transition these tools over to C++ to use true classes? and if so, if I'm creating a new pseudo-tool, would it be best to take a C++ approach, or to keep consistency with the C stuff until someone transitions all the tools over? Any thoughts Joel

filter effect input and premultiplied alpha

Hi all, Playing with feDisplacement map, and reading the code, I noticed filter effects recieve premultiplied images as input. I would expect non premultiplied images at least for filters that make explicit use of the color channels (like displacement map)... Is this the expected behaviour in svg? If not, I think the issue should be fixed before 0.46, since all art work based on this would be modified if we change this... jfb.

I believe the XCF extension functions correctly because I can intercept the temporary file and it is an appropriately layered XCF. Inkscape, however, crashes. The SVN revsion 17317 introduced dependence to unstable glib release <http://inkscape.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/inkscape/inkscape/trunk/src/xml/…> The glib/gtestutils.h file is on glib-2.15 dev versions, but not on last 2.14 stables version. Some test could be added in the source to avoid such dependence until glib-2.16 go out. After discussions on IRC, looks like this is to use the g_assert function.

Creating guidelines from objects

Hi, I just committed a change to SVN (rev. #17022) which allows the user to convert rectangles and 3D boxes to a collection of guidelines that are aligned along these objects' edges. Originally, this was a stab at something in the direction of RFE #172136 (in particular, it was only meant to work for 3D boxes). But since I'm not familiar yet with grid infrastructure I thought that instead of a grid it would be easier to create a couple of guidelines from a box, which can then be used as a basis for 3D based drawings. Not as functional as a 3D box based grid but better than nothing. Then it occurred to me that it may be even more useful to convert *rectangles* to guides because in this way it becomes much easier to create guidelines in specified positions/constellations (imagine applying it to rotated or skewed rectangles). So I implemented this as well and added an additional menu entry "Object->Objects to guides" which allows conversion to guidlines of any rects or 3D boxes in the current selection. Now I have some questions. 1) I'm not sure if this kind of change should occur during Frost phase (I couldn't ask for an exception before because I hadn't thought of it at that time). But since IMHO it's an extremely useful yet very lightweight change - even if a couple of files were adapted - and I don't see any way in which this can possibly break things, I committed it anyway. If it is not desired and should be held back until after 0.46, please feel free to revert it. 2) Originally I added a button to the 3D box toolbar which allowed conversion of selected boxes to guides. After providing this option for rects, I also added this button to the rect toolbar, but then I thought it might also make sense in (at least) Selector tool, so I decided not to clutter the toolbars and removed the buttons altogether in favor of the menu entry. Do you think there is any value for such buttons? 3) I added the keyboard shortcut 'Shift+G' for conversion to guides in Rect, 3D Box and Selector tools. Do you think this is appropriate (I personally find it very handy to have a quickly accessible shortcut in these tools) or should there rather be a global shortcut associated with the corresponding verb? However, developing on OS X is quite straightforward and very similar to the process on Linux (we don't use XCode or any other OS X specific environment, so you only need a text editor, a terminal, gcc and make). Once you get Inkscape to compile as per these instructions: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/CompilingMacOsX you're ready to go (I advise you to remove the option --enable-osxapp at configure time and just keep Inkscape as a plain command line app, which is easier to debug and run with special options). Then, to know more about Inkscape internals, development practices or what's on the wish list, subscribe to the devel mailing list and hang out on the IRC channel, you'll find plenty of clever people there. It's release time right now so focus is on bug fixes and major development has to happen in branches. You can use a SVN branch or use git locally (via git-svn) and prepare your patches with it. The "rule" is that, once you get two solid patches accepted, you are given direct SVN access. Thanks for offering your help! Feature missing from Roadmap

Correct me if I'm wrong, but skimming the roadmap I was unable to find any reference to work on a swatch palette for named colors, grdients and patterns. I'm talking about a single dialog where the user can create named colors which would later be referenced by name in the XML (I don't know if SVG allows it) - for example, suppose I create buttons and other graphic elements for a website design. I have many of them and they are differently shaped. I might want to paint them with a blue color. I then create a new swatch, name it "buttonBackground" and set all the background rectangles to use it. Later, I may want to change the entire color scheme of the website - in this case all I need to do is just access that swatch and change its value to, say, red - and all The button backgrounds immediately update. I feel this is a very basic, important feature missing from Inkscape. I know from experience I use this extensively on other applications, and even on Inkscape I try to fake this feature by creating gradients with two identical colors and sharing them between shapes (but it's awkward and the gradients can't be named and are hard to find among the long list of used gradients in a large document).

PDF Export (Cairo) stress testing

Hi all, first I need to say that the Cairo PDF export is A W E S O M E !!! (now prepare for some nagging... ;) For some weeks I was working on a bigger project (0.5 x 3 in meters ;) and it was quite an adventure to print it out... Inkscape 0.44 export didn't work for me, as I wanted pictures and transparency. So I compiled rev. 17189 from SVN on gentoo. (Sa, 26 Jan 2008) To verify, use the SVGs in http://home.arcor.de/caliga/timeline.zip Exporting without text-to-curves the result is: - Console: (inkscape:5847): WARNING **: Parameter <blurToBitmap> might not exists 9354,330078 1275,590576 - PDF-Output: about 1kb in size, therefore not completed... one time I got: (inkscape:5847): CRITICAL **: SPObject* sp_object_unref(SPObject*, SPObject*): assertion `object != NULL' failed Exporting with text-to-path: Well, today I could not reproduce it, but after a long time of swapping I saw messages similar to "Warning! Allocating large amount of memory. Possible memory leak." today it just said "Killed" after swapping arround for a while. (unfortunately I had to this on my old 512mb machine as my Laptop broke...) I actually got a working PDF from the smaller version (Zeitstrahl 18.svg). Hey, I thought this is just vectors? How does size matter? Well, I suspect that the "preferred DPI" option plays a part here. However, I needed the xxl version, with a lots of DPI ;). So I went to my friend with the big (!) printer (plotter) and installed Inkscape 0.46-pre0 (win). Direct printing didn't work, so we tried to create a PDF there. Without text-to-path we got an error message. With text-to-path it worked for "Zeitstrahl 19 xxl single.svg", but not for the double version. I think we had set "preferred DPI" to 150. However, later my friend told me that he *could* create a PDF from the double version... Summary: Well... if you please, it would be nice if Inkscape could create a Cairo-PDF from Files like "Zeitstrahl 19 xxl double.svg" with any combination of options set, on a 500MB machine, in no time ;) Thanks :) Daniel P.S.: Another way of stressing Inkscape quite a bit (at least with 500MB RAM), is to select all objects of one timeline (in xxl double) and trying to group them. Hello, my name is Davide i come from italy, some of you already know me, i suppose, i started introducing my work in the inkscape's user list. I've made a web-site, that is called inkscape gallery, it is meant as a meeting point for the inkscape's user community where to post and show inkscape made drawing and where to talk about inkscape and open-source software in general. I used drupal and i've just realized that inkscape.org is being rebuilt on the same powerful and open-source cms... The inkscape gallery layout is entirely made with inkscape. Now you may ask, why did you do this? Cause i started using inkscape from the beginning, i've never used other vector graphic software, then graphics became a work and i'm still using inkscape. Now i have a small company, it's called nois3lab (http://nois3lab.it ...but it is in italian only and we're now upgrading it) and i'm trying to achieve the purpose of a graphic and web-design agency (not only, we also work on customizing linux distros for companies and administration, for example) working with free and open-source software exclusively. So, i started looking around to find inkscape resources and it seemed something was missing. A place, expecially made for inkscape, where to share our drawing, to share our thoughts, a place where to go to see how great inkscape is. I've found many resources on inkscape.org and i know there's a gallery section too, but i wanted to make a gallery web site where to spend time viewing beautiful images in their own context. in the previous weeks i was trying to make it well known in the community before releasing officially, it is at http://test.inkscapegallery.net, right now. Now i think it's ready, we're going to pre-release it on day 11 of february and it will be at http://www.inskcapegallery.net. What it seems interesting to me, as well as the project itself is the chance to make inkscape.org and inkscape gallery work together, cause both are meant to spread the inkscape knowledge and use. We have many ideas about this, and maybe we can share them in the next days. But, for now, i also wanted to announce that we are working on a plugin for inkscape to publish on inkscape gallery directly from inkscape. We know that there's the jayeshsalvi's work on alt canvas and i hope he's reading me, cause we didn't decide what to do at the moment. We could use that plugin and extend it to support inkscape gallery or write another one, independent plugin. But it has to be cross-platform; linux , windows and mac too. grids, guides, snapping UI

Hi guys, overall you did a terrific job on these features, but I have several comments/questions on the UI: Doc prefs: - "snap guides while dragging" option does not seem to work - no snapping to grid, other guides or objects - can we disable the remove button when there's nothing to remove in Grids? - can we give grid names that at least reflect their type, e.g. AxGrid2222 or RectGrid2222 instead of grid2222? - why two checkboxes, "enabled" and "visible"? what's the difference? It's not clear. I propose to rename them to "Snapping enabled" and "Grid visible". Also if I uncheck "enabled", visible does not work - why? if that's intentional, please just gray out the rest of the grid options when "enabled" is unchecked. - why there's no option for hex grid to show dots? - Snap tab: for what snaps/nodes, the tooltip lists what they may snap to, but here, more important is another question - what are nodes? only path nodes, or special points in shapes? what about gradient handles and text baselines - are they "nodes" too? I think this needs to be clarified right here. What they snap to is clear from the rest of options below. - same about what snaps/bboxes: what they snap _to_ is not important here, it's clear from the rest of options anyway, but that it only works in selector is important. Oops, no, wait; I just noticed that bboxes don't snap to paths/nodes, and nodes don't snap to bboxes. In that case this should be mentioned in the tooltips of course (e.g. "snap to bounding boxes of other objects but not to their paths" and vice versa). - "Snap at specified distance" is misleading; better something like "Snaps only when closer than:" - "Miscellaneous" is a bad label - doesn't this option belong in "what snaps"? Maybe as a suboption under "nodes" - am I right in assuming the rotation center is considered a "node" for snapping? - in any case, "Also snap the rotation center of an object when snapping nodes or guides" - why are guides mentioned here? how can I snap rotation center of a guide? - finally, I think we should rearrange the tabs again :) Tooltips that include "see previous tab" are a sign that something is very awkward here. As I understand the options, I would propose dividing them as follows: first tab: "Snapping" - enable snapping - what snaps, including the rotation center option second tab: "Snap targets" - snap to guides - snap to grids - snap to objects - snap to intersections (in this order!) feDisplacementmap fix

Hi all! Atm, feDisplacementmap output depends on zoom factor (see here<https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/182059> ). I had a look at the code to try to fix this, but I need someone to validate the code. Precise meaning of area, unit transforms, and particulraily of the function "enlarge_area" are not perfectly clear to me. The modifs are all in nr-filter-displacement-map.cpp.<http://launchpadlibrarian.net/11804938/nr-filter-displacement-map.cpp> I just changed "scale" with "scalex" and "scaley" defined as: Matrix trans = units.get_matrix_primitiveunits2pb(); double scalex = scale*trans.expansionX(); double scaley = scale*trans.expansionY(); where apparently appropriate (in the render() and enlarge_area() methods), but I would feel more confortable if someone having a better understanding of the code could check if this is correct or if other changes are needed elsewhere... improving a bit more the feImage filter

this is my updated patch for hadling svgelements referenced by id on the feImage filter primitive. It is not working yet but is much better than the previous patch I sent to the list. Now the URIReference is properly handled and a NRArena/NRArenaItem created. Then I create a pibblock and render the svg element in it. When I call the nr_arena_item_invoke_render method I get this error: ** (inkscape:6874): WARNING **: rendering element File display/nr-arena-item.cpp line 308 (?): Assertion item->state & NR_ARENA_ITEM_STATE_BBOX failed I dont know how to get rid of this one. I am going to travel now and will be back only next week. If anybody wants to give it a try, this patch needs a last touch to get working. (it also adds an extra button to the feImage settings UI: to use an element instead of an image, you must select the desired element and then click on the "SVG Element" button) best wishes, Juca

Hi, Hum, Johan is right. I did not consider this as a new feature, but I was wrong. Sorry--- still learning! :-( I think it is definitely worth thinking about it: the point is that pattern-along-path loose a lot of usability if the offset parameters are not there (at least the 'space' added between copies): several people asked me about the old python script, just to have this functionality (that is what made me think of this as a kind of bug...). For instance, in many (most?) cases (foot prints, stars, any shape...), you don't want the copies of the pattern to touch each other. Moreover, the work arround are not easy... Making the dimensions proportional or not to the size of the object is codewise straightfoward, but Johan is right stressing that the right decisions have to be made here. This requires some time to think about it, and might be worth postponing to 0.47. On the other hand, it would be a pitty to release lpe pattern-along-path without it... I am just not experienced at all in such big projects as inkscape, and I'll devoutly follow guru's advices! In particular, I'll perfectly agree if we decide to remove this. JF.

Filter effects UI

Hi There are a couple of issues with filter effects UI, that I'm concerned about in the upcoming release. First, at some point of development, the blur slider was disabled when there was a more complex filter attached to the object. I believe that this is a good thing, because it's not too clear, what it should do. Nevertheless, right now it causes a crash. I haven't dwelved much into this problem and there may be some bigger underlying problem, that needs fixing. But unless there's a plan on how this slider should work with complex filter already attached to the object, I believe it should be disabled in those cases. (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/186281 ) Second is a problem I fully realized only today: there's no user interface for setting enable-background property. Without this, the only working input images are Source Graphic and Source Alpha. Background Image and Background Alpha only contain data, when there's property 'enable-background:new' set on some parent object of the filtered object. Without this, they will just appear to not work. pattern-along-path LPE recent additions

Hi all, Recently, JF added support of some more of path-along-path extension's parameter in the pattern-along-path LPE. (spacing, and offset parameters) I am not too certain that this change is good so close to release. Especially I am concerned with ambiguity or "wrong" calculation of parameter values. Could someone please have a (somewhat thorough!) look at what the new parameter values mean and that the resulting path is consistent with that meaning? What happens for example, when scaling the original path? I really think the meaning of their values should depend on the "scale width in units of length" checkbox. It is easy to revert (the svn revision changed only one file and reverting it does not break compilation), so we can postpone the decision _a bit_. Thanks a lot, Johan

Linux dev. binaries?

Is there a source of current SVN binaries for linux of which I'm not aware? Seems to me a large base of possible testers are being lost by not having these available - I know everyone's hard at work on good stuff, but is there anyone who could re-start the autopackage builds so linux inkscape users can test and report bugs? I just grabbed my early Jan. build to do some work, ran into a real doozy of a bug... couldn't find it on launchpad... figure it must be fixed in SVN... took me quite some time to make an SVN compile (most people wouldn't bother), and of course the bug's gone, great. Had I not spent all that time on an SVN compile my choices would have been either report a bug that's gone, or not report anything at all. Cheers -Terry

OK, I did a little research and there's no wonder you never heard of it: it is a mac specific thing. To get a brief overview of font management on OS X (which I've always thought to be very well designed) you can skim over this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25251 http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn/tn2024.html The Font Suitcase thing is a format dating back from OS 9 (the original Macintosh system, before it was unixified). This is a weird format, in which the whole font is stored in the resource fork and nothing is stored in the data fork. As a result the file appears to be 0 bytes: $ ll Curlz\ MT -rwxrwxr-x@ 1 root admin 0 Apr 7 2004 Curlz MT nor do they have a file extension. The font information however is just regular true type. OS X (i.e. the unixified version) does not ship with these fonts now (I'm not even sure it ever shipped with some) but supports them for backward- compatibility's sake. The only app I know that ships with such fonts is.... you guessed it: MICROSOFT Office. Well you can't ask them to be good players on a platform which is competing with them, for sure. I don't expect support to appear in Pango anytime soon since the format is deprecated. Anyway, it seems perfectly safe to convert those to regular TTF, no information is lost: it just moves it from the resource fork to the data fork. It just means each user has to do it. PS: I would be curious to know which format Office 2008 uses for its font on OS X. Does someone have info on this? PPS: you may see some work on font suitcases in Pango, but this is not (AFAIK) related to this particular format. It is probably related to the new font suitcase format introduced with OS X, which has the dfont extension and is kind of the contrary: everything is in the data fork and the resource fork is empty of font information. This makes working with this format easier. But it is at the same time quite new so support is not yet perfect.
