Hi all, Sorry for the OT post but I guess some of you might be interested in supporting Open Standards for document formats... As most of you will probably be aware by now, the ISO Ballot Resolution Meeting for Microsoft's appalling document specification (OOXML, ECMA-376 or DIS29500) is happening at the end of this month. We are actively involved in helping the National Bodies (NBs), that will decide if it should become an ISO standard or not, to dissect and analyse the thousands of comments (3522) and the 2000+ pages of Dispositions which ECMA have produced in response. The site for this work is http://www.dis29500.org I would appreciate it if you could forward this to all interested parties. Especially those of a technical nature who would be able to comprehend and make sense of the dispositions which ECMA have produced. There are 3522 comments (many of which are duplicates). The responses from ECMA (dispositions) are now also present on this site and can be examined and commented on. The objective is to "tag" the dispositions so that the NBs can focus on those areas of the proposed specification that are real problems or are simply unworkable as part of an International Standard. We already have ODF and do not really need another one. It is in everyone's interest to help the NBs to come to the right conclusion after the forthcoming BRM... Failure to load image in non-interactive mode.

Hi, The Image filter works for external images interactively but fails when the command line is used to convert an svg file to a png file. It fails with the following error messages: (inkscape:26505): glibmm-CRITICAL **: Glib::ObjectBase*<unnamed>::create_new_wrapper(GObject*): assertion `wrap_func_table != 0' failed (inkscape:26505): glibmm-WARNING **: failed to wrap type of 'GdkPixbuf' The line in nr-filter-image.ccp that is generating the error message is: image = Gdk::Pixbuf::create_from_file(fullname); It doesn't throw a Glib::FileError or a Gdk::PixbufError. Does anybody have a clue as to what difference between running interactively and using the command line could be the source of this problem? Tav

Windows Inkscape icon is Crunched

I just installed the Inkscape beta, and I notice a slight problem with the application icon. Notice in the attached screenshot of the start menu, that this 32x32 icon is aliased - I suspect because it's using a 48x48 icon. When was the icon changed, and why? Apart from the aliasing, I can't see any difference in design. Joel

Making more documentation faster with wiki

The documentation is actually 100% docbook based. Docbook are converted to SVG for integrated tutorials if I'm not wrong. The problem is docbook is not the easiest way to make a doc for everyone, and there are lot of people that are not developers and would like to help for some other tasks (as we see lot of good free tutorials around the web and translator in lot of languages). Actually the manuals are here in Inkscape SVN, there is an English and a French beginning of doc : http://inkscape.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/inkscape/user_manual/trunk/xml/ The doc didn't move since one month, Elisa-Yemanja (that already amade a paper book manual on Inkscape) contributed in French version 2 weeks ago, but think this is too long process to manage docbook. I think it will be better to use a well defined wiki for manual, as lot of contributors could participate easly as wikimedia projects and some other projects shown. There are already started wikibooks for inkscape on wikibooks.org. I believe there are 2 conditions for this project to be used: * A well defined zone for the wikimanual doc (like doc.inkscape.org, manual.inkscape.org or inkscape.org/doc), actually user have to dig in wiki to find part of user information. * Tools to convert automatically this wiki to docbook. I then searched tools to convert from wiki to docbook and from docbook to wiki, and there are several ones: to integrate docbook to wiki (and don't restart the whole documantation) there are scripts made by blender.org (or at least referenced on there wiki) in perl and python : http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Meta/DocBook_to_Wiki mediawiki project itself contain a php wiki2docbook, available in the mediawiki svn (and archive, I suppose): http://tools.wikimedia.de/~magnus/wiki2xml/w2x.php Example of conversion to odt et pdf are nice they even contain link to other pages of the manual on the de.wikipedia.org used as example: http://www.nabble.com/Wiki-Konverter-to3627646.html I suppose we could output to SVG from docbook and change to local disk pages or other site obtaining then a full doc separated distribution (as there is gimp + gimp-doc, python + python-doc, ruby + ruby-doc, ...) or choose to make links to generated svg doc on inkscape site or both, to have well done manual for users with interactive features as actual tutorials. I think tutorial is good as is light, allowing a quicktour to Inkscape, the doc should be another documentation separated from inkscape itself, at least in a first time. While it does not solve the underlying problem, it may ease the font conversion: I've finally put up a small app based on a script of mine which did this. Drop one or several font files on it and it will convert all of them to TTF, in the same directory. http://jo.irisson.free.fr/dropbox/Font2TTF.zip It uses Fondu[1] to convert Font Suitcases (wether they are dfont or the old Font suitcase format) and FontForge[2] for other types (otf, pfb currently). Fondu is included for 10.5 users (on Intel but I guess there are few 10.5 users on PPC). Fontforge needs to be installed (either via the link below or through MacPorts/Fink. I used MacPorts, it works fine). WARNINGS: - this may just-not-workTM - it overwrites ttf fonts of the same name already present (this is to allow to reconvert fonts if you already did it, without having to manually deleting all of them). - this duplicates the fonts already present on the system. FontBook will put a dot next to their name. You'll probably need to deactivate a version so that OS X behaves sensibly. - if you convert system fonts, you'll not be able to deactivate them, hence you'll need to live with the duplicates - duplicated font can cause rendering problems on Firefox (last time I tried anyway) ADVICE: - copy (not move, copy. this is achieved by holding down the Alt key when dropping the files) the fonts from your libraries (/Library/ Font, /Users/yourname/Library/Font) to somewhere (a folder on your desktop is fine), then select the fonts in this new location and convert them there, eventually select all the newly created TTFs and put them back in a font library folder (or double click each of them to install them) - if you want these TTF versions to be available to X11 apps only and to continue to use the rest idependently, move them to an X11 only location. ~/.fonts for example (the .fonts folder in your home directory). Do to this, in Terminal: mkdir ~/.fonts cd the-folder-where-your-ttf-fonts-are mv *.ttf ~/.fonts - manually rebuild the font cache, just to be sure. In Terminal: sudo fc-cache Let me know if it works/helps/screws everything up. Hi, I have a question about today's Inkscape0802051748: was there an upgrade of the GTK? I'm getting a strange behaviour of the Inkscape window in Windows Vista. When I click on the taskbar to minimize/maximize the Inkscape window, it keep reapearing and never minimizes. Molumen

Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with this suitcase thing you mentioned. Normally I would be able to look it up and learn about it etc, but unfortunately I have a heavy course-load for the semester and probably don't have the necessary time to devote to it. I am cc'ing the devel list in case anyone else has the knowledge to have a look. Apparently the current inkscape code does something like: width = 7; height = 7; data = malloc (width * height); The problem would then come in trying to use this data as a cairo image surface: stride = 7; surface = cairo_image_surface_create_for_data (data, CAIRO_FORMAT_A8, width, height, stride); In previous releases of cairo, using a stride value like this that is not a multiple of 4 would cause cairo to draw total garbage. Instead, now, as of cairo 1.5.8, the above would result in an error surface with a status of CAIRO_STATUS_INVALID_STRIDE. The fixed could would instead look like this: width = 7; height = 7; stride = cairo_format_stride_for_width (CAIRO_FORMAT_A8, width); data = malloc (stride * width); surface = cairo_image_surface_create_for_data (data, CAIRO_FORMAT_A8, width, height, stride); Here, the cairo_format_stride_for_width call takes care of any necessary alignment, (which in the current version would return a value of 8 for the stride). Obviously, that much of a change is trivial. Beyond that, we'll need to then fixup as much inkscape code as necessary so that all of inkscape's own rendering code properly accounts for the stride not being identical to the width. Make sense? New sp-object question

Hi, I'm adding a new sp-object; a serial number. This allows the user to drop a serial number on the doc and define the start number, increment, and number of numbers and then the downstream imposition software takes over from there. As I looked at this I started to wonder if one of the problems is that this will introduce a non-standard SVG element. Filter Rendering issue

Since we're getting read for full freeze here I figured I'd bring up a bug that I confirmed last night that seems like it should potentially be a blocker imho. There is an example file showing the rendering issue with a few different filters. It appears to be another filter & transformation issue. Inkscape native Mac OS X build & look improvements

Hello, I've recently switched for good to MacOSX (after several years of work with Windows). I'm user and fan Inkscape. On Windows there was pretty well working native build, while it is missing on MacOSX (X11 build is pretty slow and not handy) So I've decided to make it myself and now share my experience with you. Attached the screenshot of my running native OSX (Leopard) version of Inkscape (no, it's not a fake ! ;P) I've used the recipe from http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/CompilingMacOsX with MacPorts. (being too big) * Leopardish-normal theme and "Geneva 11pt" should be set by default in Inkscape.app somehow if no GTK settings (or other GTK installation) are present * ... and finally there's some problem with SVG View repaint, everytime it repaints (when opening or activating Inkscape window) the view is afterward erased by default (grayish) color (???) and then when I move the mouse over the view (which is erased with solid color), the repaints 2nd time, this time the proper output stays on screen. I believe it is problem of Inkscape not GTK+ cos it doesn't happen in any other place but just SVG (Document) view. Anyway my build works pretty well, there're some minor annoyances in some windows (like File open window) however it seems to be pretty stable (doesn't crash) and responsible. LPE plugin framework

Hi all, I'd like to start working on building a *plugin* framework for the LPEs (for example, but maybe tools too? dunno, let's try with LPE 1st). My motivation is two-fold: 1. I'd like people to be able to create new LPEs without requiring a new Inkscape release, like the current python extensions 2. it seems a challenging task! :) I'd like to hear opinions, tips, critique, everything about this from you. Dr Dobb's has very recently published articles about building such a framework which I am intending to follow (haven't read any of it, except the title). Again what do you think of this? Updating the win32 library bundle

Hi, all, Several people have been asking me to make additions and changes to the library bundle before the release. Since there are so many, I would like to try it incrementally rather than everything at once. This would make it easier to pinpoint a problem. So first I've added Cairo 1.5.6 and Poppler 0.6.4. The interaction between anti-aliasing, transparency, and gamma-correction

Hi All, This is my first post to this list, so I will keep things brief. First of all, I love Inkscape, and this is the reason for the message. My tests indicate that, when rendering, Inkscape implements anti-aliasing and transparency directly in a gamma-corrected color-space. Am I right? It is my opinion that these operations should instead be performed in a linear color-space. Although it is now probably too late to change the default behavior of transparency (given that the artists used gamma-corrected blends as reference while creating their content), it is not too late to modify the behavior of anti-aliasing. Also, perhaps a tag could be used on future files to identify that they were created under the assumption of linear-blends. Jim Blinn has a very good article on the subject: Jim Blinn, 2003 "A Ghost in a Snow Storm", Jim Blinn's Corner: Notation, Notation, Notation, Chapter 9, pages 133--146, Morgan Kaufmann There, he explains the problems that arise from performing blends in a non-linear space, in better words than I ever could. At any rate, I'd be happy to give examples and to elaborate on the topic once I receive a message that reassures me I am posting on the correct alias. Is this using a python extension to inkscape, or in an external application? Accessing Resource Data in Python Scripts

Hi All, I'm just working on a rendering extension, which needs to access a collection of source data files. Really I'd like to add a sub-directory to the extension scripts directory, but I'm having difficulty accessing the sub-directory, because when my script starts, it's working directory seems to be my home directory not the extension directory. So if I call the line inkex.etree.parse( "my-sub-dir/data.svg" ) it only returns successfully if my-sub-dir is in my home directory. Does anyone have any suggestions how to access my data files from their installation directory? Thanks Joel

But I thought those of you tracking the progress of the native GTK+ port to OSX might be interested in the following blog post from Mikael Hallendal from Imendio. http://micke.hallendal.net/blog/2008/01/30/happenings-in-gtk/ Quote: "Our aim is to have an easily installable framework for Mac OS X finished within the next couple of weeks to make it very easy to setup your Mac OS X machine for cross platform application development with GTK+." Hi, Sorry guys - I couldn't resist adding a new feature during feature freeze :) First shot at keyboard profiles for Corel DRAW and Zoner Draw has landed into trunk. I'll try improving bits here and there in he next days, but current version should be good enough already. Also, Adobe Illustrator profiles has been fixed and improved. If I'm lucky with spare time, I'll try adding another one for ACD Systems Canvas 11 too. P.S. In case you don't know yet, work on Corel DRAW X4 file format support in UniConvertor is ongoing and new release to add this feature is planned *real soon now* ;-) Cheers, Alexandre

filter node parameters UI

I have noticed the need for a way to configure x,y,width and height for the filtered area. These are paremeters of the <filter/> node. I am trying to code it but I got some problems that I was not able to solve. Maybe you can help me. Please take a look at this patch. It substitutes the original _settings_box by a Gtk::Notebook with 2 tabs. In the first tab we have the filter primitive settings. In the second tab I have put the filter settings (x,y,width and height) My doubts are: 1) am I coding correctly the setting of filter node parameters? 2) why doesn't the filter node parameters start hidden as it happens with the primitive settings? 3) we have some problem with the labels of the filter node settings. Could you please review this patch? It would be great to see this on pre1 release which seems to be scheduled for tonight. And it is certainly necessary for 0.46! best wishes, Juca PS: I also thought it would be cool to have these being adjustable by handles on canvas maybe, but that's not the case by now. Maybe we can work on this possible enhancement in a future version of inkscape.

Debugging under OS X

Hello, I was chasing a startup crash on OS X 10.3.9 and after some difficulty I found a way to get a backtrace from gdb. I hoped this to be simple, but possibly due to the fact that on OS X the Initial launcher app calls a script which calls a script which calls the actual binary, I think gdb got confused. Keep path's custom informations after a boolean operation

Pencil tool interpolation

Hi all, I've been having trouble getting lines smooth looking when drawing with the pencil tool. Looking at the code, it seems like a reasonable job of interpolation is being done, but it is done while the path is being drawn, so it can't base the interpolation on all the points drawn by the user. I made some changes to do the interpolation of the entire path on button release: Here is an example using identical mouse points and identical tolerances: http://arcsin.org/temp/Screenshot-3.png On the left, is the current way; on the right, is the path interpolated using the entire curve. Deferring interpolation decreases the number of knots created and improves (imo) the result appearance. The tolerance is still adjustable in the same way it is currently. Here's the diff, which is only a demonstration, and in no condition to be actually used: http://arcsin.org/temp/diff In order to make the final patch, i guess the questions are ... is the way i'm saving the points ok (or should i use std::vector, etc), should we forgo interpolating at all during drawing and instead just show the user a line path (which would greatly simplify the pencil-context code)? or do people want to retain the old behavior and create a new setting/tool. regards, rob

Hidden layers not hidden in preview and print

for me Inkscape 0.45+0.46pre0 built on Debian etch++ prints layers that have been marked as hidden in the layer menu. The same happens with previews. infobox for filter effects dialog

I have just commited a feature that took me some time to implement (because it required artistic inspiration) It is an infobox that explains to the user what each available filter primitive does. I'd like to receive feedback about this feature. So, svn update; make; sudo make install and then check what changed on the filters dialog. make install is needed because I have added some images to the UI. One is still missing: feDisplacement Map. Anybody have any idea of how to depict this primitive in a mnemonical way? Juca

Hi Bob, Here's a summary of recently discovered problems that this new bundle must address: - it must have that gspawn-win32-helper*.exe thing without which effects now crash - it must have at least gtk 2.10.12, because of this bugfix: 392015 Selected menu item invisible on Windows Vista - it must have libgc compiled with LARGE_CONFIG defined, as per the instructions linked from this bug (in mental's comment): https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1803613&group_id=… to remove the 0.5 Gb memory limit. If you are a knowledgeable developer, but short on time to fix bugs, there is a way to mark bugs that you don't have time to fix yourself, but that you'd be willing to give advice to new developers on. This is done via the "Offer mentorship" link in the Actions column of a bug report. When you offer mentorship, the bug gets marked with a Swiss Flag. Newbie coders and developers looking for something to work on but who'd like some handholding, can search for these bugs in particular. If you choose to offer mentorship for a bug, it would be good practice to outline what the bug fix would involve, perhaps even indicating files/functions needing touched, and so on. Also, leave some tips for how best to contact you (IRC, email, comments in the bug) if they have questions. Bryce

There was a discussion in the irc channel today regarding exporting PDFs and Carl Worth happened to be there to triage things... well, it got taken to their lists and here's some important info for us. From the cairo list: http://lists.cairographics.org/archives/cairo/2008-January/012800.html Carl then said: Specifically: 1. Check cairo_status at least once. 2. Never set a non-invertible matrix. Just passing it on... Oh, and since I have to ask every once in a while. Carl also said they were trying to target the 4 bugs that prevent us from switching renderers for 1.6 which will hopefully be out within a month. (no promises on that though) So, that may be a nice switch to make for 0.47 if we can. -Josh

feImage renderer is working properly for images. Getting graphics from other svg elements is still not implemented Nicholas, could you work on the UI for this filter primitive, please? If you wish to do so, I suppose that it could be easier to construct it completely and just leave the svg element settings hidden, so that, as soon as we have the renderer working for svg elements too we can simply .show() this half of the feImage settings UI The reason why the renderer still does not work for svg elements is because I don't know how to get the NRPixBlock from an element given its id attribute. Maybe somebody here could help me on this? Juca

inkview can't show text blur and the cause of it

Hi, all: Inkview in front revision can't show text blur correctly. I traced the problem and find that in main() sp_document_ensure_up_to_date (ss.doc); should be put before ss.view = sp_svg_view_widget_new (ss.doc); not after. Otherwise the 'layout' member of SPText will have wrong value. And consequently, the 'item_bbox' will not be set correctly. By the way, I'm from China, and have been using Inkscape for more than one year. Usually, I use inkscape to design slides, and use inkview to show them.

Inkscape.org Drupal theme mockups needed

Hi all, The next item on our infrastructure todo list has been to move the website over to Drupal. Inc is about ready to turn on the code, so next we'll need a Drupal-ified website theme. It's amazing that despite three facelifts since Inkscape started, we've essentially kept the same underlying PHP bones of our website. Unfortunately, as we've grown they've exhibited some problems: 1. Contributors must know SVN to add to or update the website 2. New content must be created in PHP 3. To roll out changes you need an SSH account on inkscape.org 4. Our news/rss setup is limited in features and breaks often 5. Due to the above, the site's content has gotten pretty stale I'm very hopeful about our change, and think we'll be able to solve these issues well. In the year since we picked Drupal as the successor, I've been using Drupal to run my own personal website, and am finding it to be both easy to use, and very flexible and powerful. So the plan going forward is: A. Set up a demo site for folks to learn Drupal B. Test out Drupal's localization capabilities C. Start work on building up the site's content D. Design a new theme for the website E. Once we're ready/happy, cut over to the new site We will be targeting the new Drupal 6.0 (currently in beta). Localization - one of our most critical requirements - has been a top focus for Drupal 6.0 development, so I'm sure it will meet our needs, but we need to test it thoroughly, to ensure our translators will be comfortable using it. Regarding the content, I don't have any huge plans. As far as I'm concerned, we could move all the content into the wiki and manage it there. However, I've really enjoyed working in Drupal, and suspect that once people gain comfortability with it, they'll naturally want to build up content in it. But at this point, the news blog is my principle concern. Now, for the website theme and look and feel, this is a good opportunity for us to explore some new ideas (even including sticking with our current look and feel, just Drupalifying it to fit Drupal's new capabilities). Hi All, I'm happy to announce, after all this time, that my native file dialogs for windows are now ready. I cannot believe how long it's taken to get them right, but they're working properly now - without needing any extra dependencies in the end. With the exception of the preview pane, the end result looks pretty unremarkable, but then that's the point of a native dialog! - I certainly wouldn't have believed the lengths it would be necessary to go to implement this. I might not have embarked on the project if I'd know, but it's done now. I guess it's too late to add this patch to the .46 release, but my NativeWin32FileDialogs branch is ready to be merged at an appropriate time. Take a look, if you're interested, or take a look at the attached screenshot. I'm trying to compile r17131 and have problems with tar-pax I'm using Ubuntu Gutsy and it compiled correctly before 17091. Since that I couldn't compile anymore. First I had automake 1.9, but I didn't even start (it asked for other version of automake). I have seen on the winner about screen metadata that it is marked as "proprietary". I can see no citation about free content licensing on its page at devianART and I also notice that there was no requirement for free content licensing on the contest rules. This could lead to problems on packaging for debian and other gnu/linux distributions that have strict rules about licensing. I think that we should add this requirement on the next contest. We should also verify which license does needcoffee intend to use on his work (same is true for the #2) and update the SVG metadata. Juca

Batch export feature request

Simple request, I think it would be nice to support 'relative' exports when doing a batch export such that the 'inkscape:export-filename' paramters is relative to the location of the saved document. I <g id="item1" inkscape:export-filename="../images/item1.png" ...> and the file is saved as c:\documents and settings\allen\my documents\gfx\svgs\test1.svg, then it would save it as c:\documents and settings\allen\my documents\gfx\images\item1.png. But if I move the document or save elsewhere, it will export relative to that new location. In this case the export-filename could perhaps be in a 'universal' format that would work no matter what system it is on unix or windows path seperators don't matter. Just an idea. Today I was wondering about how to make the about screen more easily translatable. I figured out that the main problem is that text and effects applied to it are stored as curves. Maybe if we could use raw text and apply filters to it, then translators would have an easier task. This made me try to implement the mirrored reflex effect that we can see in the 0.45 about screen using filters. This is what I came up with: (1) feImage xlink:href=#(gradientrect) (2) feDisplacementMap input=SourceGraphic and displacement map=(1) <-- makes the mirrored reflex (3) feComposite input1=(2) input2=SourceGraphic <-- adds the original image to it apply a linear gradient to the rect whose id is gradientrect This gradient must be setup so that it mirrors the source graphic when applied to feDisplMap We probably would need to have an additional primitive on this stack, in order to alter opacity in the reflex Unfortunately, we don't have feImage working yet. Maybe there is another way of implementing this. And it also remains the problem of having to depend on system available fonts Anyway, this is just brainstorm :-D This also brings to discussion the general question about tools to make easily translatable drawings using SVG. Undo looses selection (in Tweak tool)

Hello again, One other glitch which the tweak tool revealed: undoing looses selection. Example: draw a circle, switch to tweak, tweak, CTRL-Z, tweak again = you can't because the circle is not selected anymore. and furthermore: draw a circle, draw another, select all, switch to tweak, tweak circle nb 1, CTRL-Z, switch to select = only circle nb 2 is selected In fact this happens in all tools: draw a circle [-> it is selected], draw another [-> the second one gets selected], CTRL-Z = nothing is selected anymore This is not particularly annoying in all other tools but it is in the tweak tool, because undoing the first tweak deselects and an additional tool switch is necessary before one can tweak again. I already noticed that when the too was in its embryonic stage in the calligraphy tool... but failed to report it :( It would be nice if: - the selection could be kept in Undo history. this would solve the issue for all tools and in addition I found myself bitten by the lack of selection history several times. Ex: you try to select several small objects, it takes a while, you add another object by mistake, the only way to subtract it from the selection is to click on it again... which cool get messy if there are already several other objects selected, or if you added it via a select under or in group or... - there was a way to select objects directly from the tweak tool. this would, in addition, allow to avoid constant switches between the select tool and the tweak tool (not that s and and w are far apart on the keyboard but still). ALT is not already used as a modifier in the Tweak tool ;) Of course the selection behavior won't be as powerful as the select tool (since the select tool modifiers is already very complex and its modifiers are all full) but just ALT+click/drag = selects and SHIFT+ALT+click/drag = adds to selection would be nice. I have never participated on a freesoftware project, so I dont know exactly how does the release schedule rolls. What comes after pre0 ? How many time does it take until pre1? Is pre0 the same that other projects call rc0 ? When do we have string freeze? How many time do translators have? At which date would you guess that we will have 0.46 released? One of the reasons that makes me ask these questions is the fact that I have been working on the filters more actively recently and I hope I am not messing the release schedule. Juca

Hello all, Josh looked at the LPE parameters in the <defs> section and saw similarities with masks and clips. LPE path parameters are on-canvas editable, so why not clips and masks asked Josh. Well... they *are* very similar, and with minimal effort I made the attached patch. =) Bugs everywhere I think (did not test what happens when you delete the clip path when editing for example...), so definitly 0.47 :) Cheers, Johan

Small enhancement of ellipse tool

Hi, I just discovered that the stuff I committed for the 3D box tool also contained a patch for the ellipse tool that had accidentally slipped in. I always found it a bit awkward that it's not possible to create circles/ellipses whose *boundary* (not a corner of the bounding box) passes through the the mouse cursor. Since the Alt-modifier seemed as yet unused in the tool, I added the following functionality. - Alt+drag creates the same ellipse as it normally would, but scaled by a suitable factor so that it passes through the click point and the mouse pointer; - Alt+Shift+drag behaves analogously with regard to Shift+drag (i.e., this creates an ellipse with center at the click point and passing through the mouse pointer); - Alt+Ctrl+drag creates a perfect circle with diameter the segment between click point and mouse pointer; - Alt+Shift+Ctrl+drag behaves the same as Alt+Shift+drag but with radii ratios constrained to integers. So basically pressing Alt just means "make the ellipse pass through the mouse pointer", apart from the exceptional case Alt+Ctrl, which I found very handy. Could you tell me if these shortcuts are intuitive to you or if you would like anything to work differently? Or maybe I missed something and it's already possible to draw these kinds of ellipses easily? If there is no objection, I'll add this to the Release Notes and also add the shortcuts to keys.xml. Inkscape filter effects causing crash

I'm using XP SP2 Inkscape 20080118 snapshop. When creating a filter effect for an object and connecting the filter to the fill color, activating the effect on the object causes Inkscape to close. I can connect the effect to the source graphic, but not the fill. The problem may also exist in other places of the filter effects. I sent this to both the user and dev lists because the last time I sent something to the dev list it didn't make it and I got a reply of some problem. It should make it to one of them. Problem with real units (mm)

Hi! Problem 1: I have switched everywhere (in inkscape) to unit mm. I only want to use that unit (and not px), for everything. Now, when I move something on canvas (or just a node) inkscape still write into the svg file the coordinates without unit (so pixel) and it calculates back and forth between pixel and millimeter. This approach has two disadvantages: - almost impossible to hand edit the resulted file or correct some inaccuracies in it. (because I need a calculator when I want to touch the file) - inaccuracies inserted for sure Problem 2: If I specify the unit in svg file, inkscape does not handle it, and misinterprets the file! Two Examples: 1: <path d="M 0,0 L 30mm,0 L 30mm,30mm L 45mm,30mm" id="path7887" /> becomes in inkscape (after modifying something in xml editor (ex: style), or moving a node): <path d="M 0,0 L 30,0 M 30,0 L 30,0 M 60,0 L 45,0" id="path7887" style="fill:none;fill-rule:evenodd;stroke:#000000;stroke-width:1px;stroke-linecap:butt;stroke-linejoin:miter;stroke-opacity:1" /> Second example: <g transform="matrix(1 0 0 -1 0 297mm)">  </g> I want to use it for flipping my coordinate (to carteesian coordinate), so I could more easily hand-edit/correct my drawing. Attaching parasite information to an object (or group)

Hi! Right now im developing a little extension, and I have a problem what I could not get workaround. I hope someone more knowledgeable can me give a hand. Im implementing cross referencing in inkscape (it can be found on many schematics), please take a look at this example: http://khiraly.googlepages.com/crossreference.png The problem is, when a group (or object) is copied, all the ids got a new random string, so it cant be determine the original ids or the original component's type. All the component is similar (from a svg point of view) so it consists lines and texts. So Im looking forward to attach infos to an svg group, which persiste, when the group is copied. Im interesting in any method, like defining a css style, adding a parasite information, or rename the resulting group's id back to its original form plus a random character. Can anybody help me here?

disable some filters

we need to find out a way to hide some filters from the ui because they are not implemented yet. These filters are feFlood, feTile, feImage and feComponentTransfer feImage is only partially implemented. I wrote the patch that is attached to this email. It seems to work, but it crashed once when I tried to add a primitive to an opened SVG that contained one of these four filter primitives. Maybe we should instead let these 4 primitives listed on the combobox but display a message saying that they are part of the SVG specs but not implemented yet. Juca

Fixed size Export Bitmap dialog

Hi, I just noticed that the Export dialog is now fixed in width. This, in my opinion, is a not a good change as one cannot now expand the dialog to show the entire file name path. This means having to click on the file name and use the arrow keys to get to then end to customize the file name, a real pain if doing lots of exporting from one file. Tav

The document properties window seem fixed (with a low prio bug still lingering), but there is a memory leak now until all registeredwidgets have been recoded. Valgrind Inkscape

Hi Again, I just tried running inkscape in linux with valgrind for the first time ever, and it reveals some interesting results (attached). It seems that libgc's malloc function has a bug where the library will operate using uninitialised data. "Conditional jump or move depends on uninitialised value(s)" It might be quite cool to have a bit of a proper play with valgrind. It seems really quite hi-tech, and I'm hopeful it will be able to reveal quite a few memory related bugs. Joel

strange behaviour on feTile

Today I have tried to implement the feTile filter primitive renderer. What surprises me is that the renderer class does not seem to be even instantiated when I try to render the filters-tile-01-b.svg test from the W3C SVG 1.1 test suite. ( http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/W3C_SVG/htmlInkscapeHarness/full-filters-t… ) in this SVG test, the filter effect is applied to an empty <g> node. There is a comment about it:  <g filter="url(#feTileFilter)"/> I think that this is causing the problem: a void node would not invoke the renderer requiring an area to be rendered. Anyone can give me some hint? my current feTile implementation is attached to this message Juca

Adding patterns to patterns.svg

Is there a trick to adding new patterns to the patterns.svg file? I created a new user pattern in an image using the objects to pattern option and saved the file. I then cut out the <pattern></pattern> in a text editor and added it into patterns.svg. It shows up in the pattern drop list, but does not actually work. Dockable dialog bugs

Hello all, Because an (what I thought) important Inkscape-devel 'paradigm' is no longer valid, there are a lot of bugs concerning dockable dialogs: I am talking about having only a single instance of dialogs. Most widgets that I use (the Registered* widgets) are not designed to be managed by others than the creator I think. (like Gtk::Widget is, by using Gtk::manage) It causes for example this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/179982 How are we going to solve this for 0.46? Regards, Johan

Hi all, I believe all frost exception development work should now be done, but would like to doublecheck. If you're on the following list, please reply with a status update: 1. Angled guidelines, by J.B.C.Engelen (DONE): Underlying code is complete, and guidelines are rendering, but it needs a UI to allow manipulating them. 2. Python module packaging (lxml, numpy) for OSX, by jiho (ETA ___): Needs wider testing. Needs someone to build PPC packages. 3. Compilation of lib2geom on OS X 10.3 (Panther), by John Faith (ETA ___): An error is preventing builds for Panther versions of Inkscape. If this can't be resolved before release, the alternative is to drop support for this OS version. 4. Font Spec Implementation, by Gail Carmichael (ETA Dec 27). Refactor patch to include some code review changes by Bulia. Also, the patch needs wider testing. 5. Win32 Uninstaller improvement, by Adib (ETA Jan 3). Fix current installer to not bug user for each changed file. 6. PDF, PS export improvements, by Adib (ETA Jan 3). Implement blur as bitmap, and display a dialog with options for text-to-path, blur-as-bitmap, alpha-as-bitmap. UPDATE: Option dialog for PDF/PS exports using cairo are implemented (PDF1.4 and PS3 only). Text-to-path works, for blur as bitmap need help with converting SPItem from vector to image, alpha as bitmap being done implicitly by Cairo 7. Clone Tiling dialog, by Tavmjong Bah (DONE): Add a few options to Shift, Scaling, and Rotation tabs. (TBD: Bug updating blur via Blur/Opacity tab.) (Also, TBD later: some small changes for default values for turbulence and composite filters.) I'd love to hear that all this work is either done, or being safely postponed for the release. Printing on XP

Hi all, So far I haven't been able to print anything useful on Windows XP using recent Inkscape versions. My prints (both at work and at home) are 8.3x to small (=600/72 dpi) and have often large black fills or fully black pages. See for example https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/166561. Is anyone else experiencing this? I think this is pretty serious and should be milestoned, unless ofcourse I'm the only one experiencing this. This appears to be a Windows-only issue, but I'm coding on Linux so I'm not of much help here. Could someone confirm this and maybe even give Kees a hand? Diederik

Not sure if this is relevant, but the Function Plotter uses a tabbed display, a "notebook" parameter, which could be causing a problem. whiteboard continuation

Actually whiteboard is not compiled by default, because there is no one to work on it, and then not enough resources to respond to a huge flow of bugreport. After a short discussion on IRC, the idea was, in a first time to know what is the actual state of the whiteboard, to undertand if it usable or if everything has to be throwed or restarted ? : I addeddocumentation on the wiki on how to compile and use it. I started it here : http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/WhiteBoard If someone found freetime to meet on inkscape whiteboard via jabber and list what work and what don't work today. Depending of the effort done by people able to compile it with the --enable-whitboard option activated the project could continue or be throuwed out of the inkscape trunk. I've myself compiled it, was able to connect to jabber server but don't know other one that have whiteboard enable Inkscape. I will not have time until saturday to test it. If someone can test it with me saturday, I will be happy to share funny crappy drawings. ;) Else if two people have time to test it and report the results on this page, that's good too... Inkscape Thread Safety

Hi All, I'm wondering how easy it would be to make the whole inkscape back-end thread safe, so that for example, SVGs can be parsed and rendered from within worker threads. Does anyone have any idea why it's not thread-safe already? The reason I'm asking is because I've noticed a couple of scenarious such as PNG export, and quickly flicking between complex SVG files in the file dialogs, where the whole application locks up, in some cases for many minutes, with no way to cancel. Right now the renderer is required to run in the UI thread - even if it's a "headless" rendering such as in PNG export. That seems odd to me. Any thoughts on this subject? Maybe I should add it as a blueprint in launchpad. Thanks Joel

Hi all, Quick recap of where we're standing today with the release: * Complete frost exception development work. ALMOST MET - PDF/PS Blur as bitmap work is still in progress. Adib is working on this, but needs Simarilius' help. - Two packaging projects are still open (afaik), but they're not blockers for progressing to Freeze * Focus should be on bug fixes, packaging, documentation, and translation work, all of which may be committed to SVN normally. MET - The number of milestoned critical bugs has been reduced to 5, which puts us in a good position for Freeze. - Translation is making good progress, even though we've not hit string freeze yet. - I don't have a good view on how our documentation is at present. I assume it's in an acceptable state. * Gain some candidate submissions for the About Screen contest. MET - Voting concluded today on a number of quite good entries. - This should be wrapping up * Release Notes should be >90% filled in. MET - JonCruz, rejon, and gustav have some sections to fill in - Overview needs fleshed out a bit more * Bug Hunt ALMOST MET - Good progress here; we're nearing our point goal. If each of us can adopt and close one bug, we should be done soon. * Post inkscape-0.46-alpha0.tar.gz NOT MET - Ted has volunteered to package it up and post it soonish.

Keyboard shortcuts in tooltips?

Hi, some time ago there was a discussion about adding keyboard shortcuts to the tooltips in the various toolbars (although I can't find the corresponding posts right now). I have done this in my local repository but wanted to ask before committing it to SVN because - I'm not sure if this causes too much overhead for translators - maybe I'm overlooking something about user-specific personal adaptions to shortcuts or localized versions, etc., that makes shortcuts in the tooltips useless for some reason. Just wanted to make sure that this is really desired. Max P.S.: I seem to remember that the consensus was also to display the mnemonic shortcuts in the toolbox (rather than 'F1', 'F2', etc.). I wasn't able to find the location where these are set, though. If this change is agreed upon, too, could someone point me to the corresponding file? Thanks.

make dist fails

running make dists on current svn fails. This is because of to long filenames in /packaging/macosx/Resources/themes/Clearlooks-Quicksilver-OSX/gtk-2.0/Scrollbars_1 and other files in that directory. The maximum allowed number of characters for the full path is 99. Any solution? Should we use other technology instead of tar? (7zip or zip)? HTH, Adib. ---

Inkscape Answers site

Hi all, I suspect a lot of people already know about this hidden corner of Launchpad, but for those that don't, we have an Answers site: http://answers.launchpad.net/inkscape/ Essentially, it's a tech support forum, for users to ask questions about using Inkscape. If it turns out their question is really a bug, they can be directed to file one "next door", (or you can do it for them, and then link the bug to the question.) It's nice in that it's more structured than a plain forum - you can mark questions as "Answered", "Solved", "Needs Info", etc. Also, answering questions of users also adds to your Launchpad karma score, especially if your answer results in "solving" the user's issue. Even though we've not advertised it much, I notice it's getting a good bit of use, with a couple dozen questions asked, well over half solved, and all but 3 answered. The answers people are giving are well considered and thorough. I get the sense that users are finding it a reliable way to get their questions addressed, and I bet it will serve as a good reference for users going forward. So, if you're ever bored looking at bugs, click on over to Answers and see if there's a question or two you think you can answer. Bryce

An easy way to hide things?

How about putting "Hide" (and "Lock") entries on the right-click context menu? Seems like it's a little bit of a pain to hide (and lock) things right now. Unless there's some secret key stroke that the manual doesn't mention. It's also odd to me that there's an "Unhide all" and "Unlock all" on the main Object menu, but no hide or lock options. --bb

Selecting objects in tweak context

Hi, in tweak context it is not possible to select objects by simply clicking on them. When looking into this I realized that this seems to be intentional since clicking on something does perform a light change (at least, that's what the code and the additional entry in the undo history suggest). However, in my (very decent, admittedly) applications of the tweak tool I have never seen a case where this small change was actually visible. And imho not being able to click-select something is such a major deviation from the usual/expected behaviour that it should be considered enabling this in the tweak tool, too - at the expense of losing the hardly useful "do a light change" option (which can otherwise be achieved by reducing the force parameter). What do people think? Max

Hi all, Please have a look at: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/167422 "When zoomed out enough to hide minor grid lines, major grid lines get drawn with the minor grid line color." My comment: "I regret this was "fixed". Now you have major lines visible when there are no minors visible; now the grid is way too visible for my linkings when zoomed out. I feel there should only be highlighted lines when there is actually something to be highlighted. When zoomed out, you see all lines highlighted. So I either would like to have A. the old behaviour back: (only use major highlighting when minors are visible, otherwise use minor color for all lines). or B. have major/minor all the time. E.g. with a highlighted 'major' line for all zooms." Option B is not handy always and should be something can can be turned off. Option A might also be put under a checkbox (what will be the default?) Regards, Johan

Bug Report and new Extension

Hi- I finally signed up on Launchpad, so I hope I did this correctly... I had written an extension to re-stack selected items (left to right, top to bottom, or vice versa) using a specified base point on each object. I posted about this on the inkscape users list. Recently I converted it to work with lxml.etree (Thanks Ted, Aaron, and Radek). It was really slow however, as it would call new instances of inkscape to get the location of the objects. Kurt pointed out this bug report/patch https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/174701 that provides a --querry-all command lie option, so I converted it. It now works, and it quite fast. In doing this, I found a bug in the live preview and optiongroups which I reported as a new bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/181799 I have attached the extension to that bug report, as I could find no other extension using the optionsgroup parameter type (other than the developer example that doesn't effect the drawing). My questions are: 1) Is it worth getting my extension added to the distribution? (This thread has an example of what it does http://inkscape-forum.andreas-s.net/topic/133367#594472 but using the old code) 2) If so, can someone check my python? I have never used python before this and it was a significant effort in trial and error (I am not sure if the csv to list conversion is really necessary, but couldn't get it to work otherwise) 3) Also if so, should I "submit it" as another bug report in launchpad (or is there a different way to offer up an extension to the project)? I keep stumbling across this issue when I want to tweak an object but the Tweak tool refuses to work - until I select the object in question (which I can't verify, though, since the selection is not visible). Python Extension Changes to getElementsByTagName?

Hi- I couldn't find this in the bugtracker, so signed up to ask here Hope this is appropriate... has there been a change to the SVG handling in recent devel nightlies (win 32 binary versions)? Several extensions I had written no longer work. I filed a bug related to the "snap guides while dragging" behavior: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/181020 Diederik did a great job fixing its behavior, now it is more controllable and does what it should. The problem is that it's not clearly explained what sould it do. In the same bug report Diederik explained why it's not possible to snap to segments atm, so he had to apply the snapping to the points only. Knowing this, the snapping works perfectly. imo, the only thing that should be changed is the checkbox label: "snap guides to points while dragging". As it is disabled by default, people will have to read the label to turn that feature on, so there's no excuses like "people don't read tooltips". About the other Bulia's proposals... I agree. The snapping options should be unified and simplified to make the easier to understand. The features work great, but the UI is slightly confusing. Regards, Gez.

WinXP - 0.46dev+devel: Crash on opening files (segmentation fault in msvcrt!_HUGE ())

Hi, in nightly builds (for example 24th of December 2007 and previous) Inkscape almost always crashes when I want to open or import some file. I have filled a simillar bug report, but with segmentation fault in wxvault.dll (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/177618), but it turned out to be connected to EMBASSY software that ships with some DELL computers... Anyway, after uninstalling the software, the program is still crashing, but this time with the segmentation fault in msvcrt!_HUGE(). On my laptop this happens when I want to open or import some file. I click on button, and the program crashes. I can almost always reproduce this crash on my laptop, but some people said that they can not reproduce it (see the bug report). Any ideas what could be wrong here? Thanks, and just wanted to say that 0.46 will be just amazing :) This is a brilliant software. Rok

My first post to this list, so bear with me. I'm trying to develop an extension to import svg data, a follow-up to Bug #179560. Question: is there any way to specify, inside an .inx file, that it is to be used only on the File|Import dialog and not in the File|Open dialog. My extension, if it works, will be meaningless in a File|Open dialog, because I only want to import one specific path node. Currently the list of available file types in the two different dialog boxes appears to be identical, is this deliberate or accidental? Alvin Penner

pdf crashes

Like others I have been getting intermittent and unpredictable (though quite often) crashes when opening or importing pdf files. I found where it crashes but I have no idea why. So I just commented out one line, which seems to have fixed it for me - likely at the expense of a memory leak. Please test if this fixes the crashes for you. This is the line 711 in src/extension/internal/pdfinput/pdf-input.cpp: //delete pdf_doc; I'm at a loss when it comes to such mysterious crashes - there's definitely no double delete here and nothing obviously fishy. default metadata in prefs?

Can someone please explain to me why we need 2 new pages in prefs for default metadata and license? What's wrong with just changing the metadata and license in an empty document and saving it as a template? Saving as a template is not obvious? OK, just make it more obvious. Add a "save template" command for example. This solution is bad because it unnecessarily duplicates some very heavy pieces of UI, clutters the preferences, and generally makes the program look clunkier and less clean. Cairo pdf output flips text

Is it known that Save As... PDF via Cairo flips text upside down? This is on a Win32 snapshot from a day or two ago. Also why is PDF via Cairo output so slow to render in Acrobat? It renders so slow you'd think it was an ultra hi-res bitmap. But the size of the file, and zoomability, say otherwise. --bb

Hi all, I am trying to test out the new PDF capabilities for Inkscape, as they're perhaps one of our most significant new features. Unfortunately, I'm not having luck getting PDF import working: I downloaded form W-4 from irs.gov and attempted File > Import, but got the following error on the console: /tmp/fw4.pdf:1: parser error : Start tag expected, '<' not found %PDF-1.6 ^ It looks like Inkscape's not detecting the file as a PDF, and trying to open it as an SVG. Some tool icon comments

3 little design critiques for some aspiring icon designer to maybe consider: * I find the current 3D Box icon oddly jarring because uses a "looking-up-from-below" perspective. All the other tools can be interpreted as either being completely flat or as looking down on something (e.g. pencil, pen -- you're never looking up at your pen). It makes it feel to me like I'm jerking my neck up and down as I scan over the tools. I'm sure there's a comment in a Scott McCloud book somewhere about not jerking around the viewpoint like this. :-) * The gradient icon just read well for me. Being right next to the hierarchy thingy makes it look very much to me like it's some kind of connector gizmo. And having the gradient just be a simple white to green makes it look like it's just a button with cool shading, not a button *about* making cool shading. (The rectangle button has almost identical shading) I think a nonsquare background shape would help (rectangle maybe even) and a three band, or 2-band color->complement (eg orange->blue) gradient in the background would help make it clear that the gradient was the point. Oh and pixel align those handles (like in the pen icon) so they're not all blurry! * There seems to be a little inconsistency in the design of the shape icons. Rect and 3D Box have a little white inner border inside the black outline. Circle and stars do not. Also I think something more interesting could be done to tie their colors together. Different colors is good, but somehow the current cyan, purple, pink, yellow just don't look like a coherent colorscheme to me. They don't seem to form any sort of progression. Also the rectangle shape feels significantly bigger than the others. Perhaps making it a few pixels smaller and slightly more rectangular would be nice. I love the pencil / pen / calligraphy / bucket icons. Those have a very unified look and communicate their functions very well. --bb

help needed: convert a SPItem into its gdk_pixbuf

Hello all, in order to show blur as blur in PDF we need to convert the shape into its rendered pixbuf. We need to place a piece of code in src/extension/internal/cairo-renderer.cpp that does this conversion. And then to include as pure image data. I have checked the /helper/png-write.cpp and in src/selection-chemistry.cpp (sp_selection_create_bitmap_copy ()). So far I do not really understand which functions needed in order to get the pixbuf. I need someone that can do the job. Any help? Adib. ---

New translation stats

Hi all, We're still not yet to string freeze, but took a big step forward towards that today. I've updated the translation statistics on the home page. Twelve languages have been translated to >80% (up from 10 last time), although the average translation ratio dropped 1% from 49% to 48%. I notice the Italian translation went from 96% a week ago, to 0% today - luca, do you have an idea what might have happened? Also, for en_CA, it looks like it hasn't been filled in very much, and what is there seems to just be Britishisms (centre, metre, etc.) Could we simply copy the en_GB file to en_CA? It seems if we are going to provide Canandian language bindings, that would give better results than what we have so far. It looks like it hasn't been updated in over a year; maybe it could just be dropped? Bryce

Native File Dialogs Update

I just thought I'd check in about the native file dialogs. We're getting seriously close now. After the conversation last week, I added an icon (from Tango) to the toolbar to allow the preview to be switched on and off, and I've reworked the preview pane so it now runs on Cairo not the Inkscape internal renderer. I've done quite a lot of work testing the dialog over the past few days including fixing some problems with the interfacing between GTK's UTF-8 and Windows' UTF-16. Really everything works now *except* rendering of SVG files for the preview pane. All I need is to be able to use librsvg. The current version in the bundle relies on the absent bzip2 and so is unusable - can we satisfy that dependancy? If so I can finish the patch, and the native file dialogs will be finished! - probably too late for 0.46 though now. I'm away now until saturday, but should be free all day. So if I can get a working copy of librsvg.dll, I might even be able finish the patch once and for all on saturday! - only 10 months later than originally expected. Happy Days Joel

Freezing/Thawing Complex Graphics

Using lots of blurred graphics in the same document can bring a computer to it's knees. Similarly, CPU intensive synths in a music sequencing application can do the same thing. In many music sequencers, there is a feature that allows you to freeze a music track by turning the synth's audio into a small WAV file and turning the synth off. Perhaps a similar feature could be introduced in Inkscape. By freezing an object (i.e. a group of blurred objects), it becomes a temporary PNG that is displayed in place of the real object. The real object exists in the document, but it is hidden from view. The temp freeze image can be moved around the canvas, but not edited at all. If you want to edit the object, simply unfreeze the object to delete the temp image and unhide the original object. Currently, you can hide and lock objects. What is missing is a means of exporting an object as PNG, locking and hiding the original object, importing the temporary PNG at the same size and location as the original object, then syncing the location of the original object with the temporary image. At bare minimum, a feature that would export a selected object as PNG and import the new PNG to a newly created layer (named "png copy of xyz_object") - all in one step would be a nice step in the right direction. Then, all I would need to do is hide the original object. If I want to edit the object, I can delete the PNG layer and unhide the original object.

LPE: bend path Vs. Patter along path

(this is a repost due to lack of response to the previous post) Can someone explain to me what the difference between those two are? as far as I can see, both "bend path" and "pattern along path" do exactly the same thing! I'm adding a link to an SVG file that shows this: http://grosberg.michael.googlepages.com/path_effect.svg the only difference is that in one you copy-paste the control path onto a shape, and in the other you copy-paste the shape to be bent onto the path. But no matter which effect you use, if you use the same shapes you'll get the same result. The ONLY difference is in the procedure. So why do we have two ways of accomplishing the same thing? wouldn't it be simpler to just have a single effect? or am I missing some subtle difference?

Inkscape taken as a reference for vector illustration on OS X

Hi everyone, I thought I would share this fact with the whole development team: a french guy started a new vector design software called Drawberry[1] which basically leverages OS X technology (Quartz and CoreImage) to draw and export simple vector drawings. In its description, it takes Inkscape as a reference for a complete, high end vector design software: "With DrawBerry, you have all the possibilities the vectorial drawing offers you in a free, easy to use and powerful application. If you don’t need applications such Illustrator or Inkscape and you want to create some simple (or less simple) illustrations, DrawBerry is for you." I'm sure this has already happened plenty of times on Linux: on this platform, Inkscape is clearly the biggest player. However what I find interesting is that Drawberry is Mac OS X only by design, and that Inkscape, though being non native, GTK based and all, is still recognized as a big player on this platform, right next to Illustrator. This is quite an achievement. The ill-intentioned may argue that this could also means that Inkscape is becoming as bloated and unusable as Illustrator is but I'm sure that the amazing amount of new features currently brewing in Inkscape will finally settle down and find their place in a clear, intuitive UI... using LPEs (take 2)

Hello, The release is coming and I don't think the LPE tool is ready. I just wanted to notice some strange things that need to be discussed : 1. "Pattern along Path" is not a good name, it doesn't deal with "patterns" (on a svg point of view). 2. The "copy" problem see bug #179840 for description 3. flip, rotate or scale a LPE object : see bug #179842 for description And please watch this youtube video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0rx__lIlkg The Red path has a "bend path" lpe applied The green one is the same converted into path, it acts as a reference for us. This is the result we naturally expect for the transformation of the red path. 4. Once Johan coded a "width control line" for "Bend Path", I found it very useful but it has now disappeared. Is OpenClipart export robust enough for 0.46?

Hi all, The import from openclipart function is pretty slick, and works fairly intuitively. I like it. However, the export function seems clunky, and isn't working for me. The dialog UI for export is quite primitive and doesn't work in an intuitive fashion. It also currently has the following (quite critical) bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/179452 I feel the amount of UI work alone to get export up to snuff is beyond what can be achieved at this point in the release cycle (unless some hero can really pound on it in the next 1-2 weeks). I imagine there may also be a non-trivial amount of work under the hood, too. What are other people's opinions on the idea of disabling OCAL export for 0.46? Bryce

[NEW] blend modes moved to layers

Because SVG has problems dealing with blends on non-top-level children (in our case, that generally means non-layers), I've moved blend modes selection to the layers dialog and made it per-layer rather than per-object. If you have existing artwork with blend modes on individual objects, or want to create new artwork with blend modes on individual objects, that can still be done from the SVG filters dialog. -mental

It works fine for me. I'm opening most of the AI and PDF files successfuly. I don't know if it's simply a coincidence, but it seems to be more stable to drag and drop files instead of importing them via menu (i've experimented some core dumps doing that). But I can't reproduce that problem easily to be sure. The problem that is indeed reproducible is the one that happens when you import a PDF/AI in an empty document and try to save. Inkscape hangs and you can't save the file or close the application. But if you create a new document, create an object (a rectangle, for example) and save it BEFORE importing the PDF, it works fine. The error you get in the cli when you open the file in an empty document is this: (inkscape:9124): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: /build/buildd/glib2.0-2.14.1/gobject/gsignal.c:1654: signal `response' is invalid for instance `0x9d1d458' Anyone can confirm this? I'm filing a bug report about this right now. Regards, Gez.

Printing

Is printing supposed to be working in rev.16673, or is it a known work-in-progress? It simply sends the CPU to 100% until inkscape is killed from the command line on my Linux machine; closing Inkscape using the normal Quit menu item is not enough. Thomas

Call for Freeze Exceptions

Hi all, Tomorrow we're going to be progressing to the next phase of the release, but beforehand I want to check if anyone is doing feature development work and wish for a freeze exception. This isn't necessary for bug fixing work - if you're just doing bugs, please keep on trucking. Also, this is not for *new* features - if you are starting on any new ideas (even if they're just enhancements to existing features), PLEASE do this work on a branch, or locally; do not commit them to SVN head. So, if you're working on a feature, can you please tell me at this time? Also please report: * Current status * Anticipated date of completion * Issues that must be solved before release I'll assemble these exception requests into a list, so as people watch the SVN traffic and see changes that are not merely bug fixes, they can use the list to see if the changes are acceptable. If you're not on the list, your changes will risk being backed out. I don't anticipate rejecting any exception requests, although if the anticipated date is too far out, or the list of issues is lengthy, we may need to pow wow on how we can put additional focus on getting the thing ready in time. NEW: cross-platform print dialog

Using the Cairo renderer that was written for PDF and PS export, I've hooked up the GTK print dialog system. This provides Inkscape with a cross-platform printing dialog (finally). In the past, we have had two methods of printing: vector and bitmap (for things that don't render correctly in PS). In the new print dialog, the "Rendering" tab exists to control this. In "Cairo" mode, it uses the Cairo renderer, and in "bitmap" mode it uses the PNG export code to populate a Cairo surface. The bulk of the new code is in: src/ui/widgets/rendering-options.* src/ui/dialog/print.* src/print.cpp There is some strange behavior in bitmap mode (offset from origin) that I haven't narrowed down yet. -- Kees Cook @outflux.net

Oversized dUI elements on Ubuntu

Since I've been working on Ubuntu lately I noticed that all the icons have excessive sizes on this system. It seems the toolbars, which AFAIK were desiged to used 16X16 icons, actually use 24X24 icons instead (obviously this is taken from the Ubuntu GTK theme). Also, docked dialogs are extremely wide. I'm using a 1280X1024 resolution desktop, and the dialogs still take up almost a third of the width of the screen. they are on the largish side on Windows as well, but not as large as on Ubuntu. This is a problem, usability-wise. It leaves very little space for actual work, and unless you work on almost full screen, you usually won't even see all the icons on the toolbar because the last ones on the right are clipped. Is it possible to somehow make inkscape ignore the current global gtk theme and use its own icon and widget sizes?

Absence notification

Hi all, just wanted to leave a note that I'll be away for a week and won't have internet access so anything requiring my interaction will have to wait until I'm back. There are still a couple of things to do - most notably, updating the Release Notes (sorry that I haven't got around to it yet) and making the toolbar for the 3D box tool functional (currently only the shortcuts work), apart from a few other odds and ends. Path Effects shortcut mixed with Division (Shift+Ctrl+7)

>From bug #178738: "Opening it from the menu Path > Path Effects works fine but when I hit Shift+Ctrl+7 the only thing I get is a note in statusbar: Select at least 2 paths to perform a boolean operation. If I have 2 paths selected and they overlap I get Division (Ctrl+/) if I hit Shift+Ctrl+7 I guess this is a regional keyboard problem, cos my / is above number 7" To fix this probably we should come up with another key than the 7/ampersand for the LPE's. I do not know all keyboard layouts that apparently exist. :-( Regards, Johan

Hmm....this is proving quite difficult! How are we going to get a conensus? It seems like the group is pretty evenly divided between those who (like me) love the new icons, and those who hate them. Really I agree with the points Bryce made yesterday. He talked about consistency across the free desktop, and consistentcy with host desktops. But if you look at this screenshot I made yesterday: http://launchpadlibrarian.net/11076114/C%3A%5CDocuments%20and%20Settings%5C…, I'd go one step further: We need tango, because it makes inkscape consistent with itself. Notice that now the standard GTK Icons - New, Open, Save, Cut, Copy, Paste are all tango style. I love the consistancy across the top row now. Also, strangely, I actually like the tango theme. I don't understand why so few do. People keep talking about pastel shades in the new theme: http://www.inkscape.org/images/tango_theme.png, but if you look at the old theme - the Rectangle, Elipse, Polygon, Paint Bucket, and Gradient tools each of them looks more pastelly (to my eye) than the new set (I think now perhaps that Rectangle, Elipse, Polygon are a little too vibrant) I wonder how we'll resolve this difference of opinion. The Circle, Box and Polygon tools look very different on account of their different colors, although they are quite similar in functionality (they all create a "flat", optionally filled shape). Also they don't convey the impression of something "drawn", but they look more like finished, plastic objects. In v. 0.45 the black outline suggested more of a "filled, drawn object" look. A red circle with a set-apart red outline just isn't something one would or could draw with the primitive circle tool. I don't know what the 3D cube is for (my version doesn't have that), but I'd group it apart from the "flat object" category of tools. 2. The double outline in the spiral, pen and pencil line doesn't really make any sense. I know that it probably was added so the icon works on a black background, but I don't know to what extent this requirement should be pampered. 1+2. In combination, I miss the "black outline" and "colored fill" consistency across all drawing tools that the old icons had. 3. The angled pen positions on the old icons looked more dynamic and natural. But then, of course, it doesn't really matter. Icon aesthetics are primarily to get newbies hooked. Once one gets used to a tool, one wouldn't switch to one with better-looking icons unless it offered a substantially better functionality (and in in the case of Inkscape, which one could?). I must admit that it was the intriguing aesthetics of sodipodi that got me onto the SVG train in the first place, and I still remember them as the best-looking set of all. Now if only Inkscape offered workaround-free colored arrowheads and a less extravagant pattern generator tool I'd happily embrace the Tango icons. --D.

Development packages for OS X (About screen contest)

Hi everyone, Thanks to the help of several people, there are now recent development builds of Inkscape for PowerPC (G4-G5), as well as prebuilt python modules for all machines (ppc and intel) and all python versions currently available on OS X (2.3 - 2.5). These new builds are available on modevia as usual: http://inkscape.modevia.com/macosx-snap/?C=M;O=D Python packages are integrated into the application so drag Inkscape and drop it somewhere on your machine (e.g. in Applications) and everything should "just work". There are two PPC packages (dec24 and 16774) which should work on Tiger and Leopard and one i386 (Intel) package (16834) which, unfortunately, is Leopard-only. How to convert Inkscape items to "ordinary" shapes?

Hi, what do I need to do when I want to convert an Inkscape-specific SPItem (like star, spiral, etc.) to an ordinary shape? Is it enough to set "sodipodi:type" to NULL? But what if there are any pointers left that refer to the "old" SPObject and expect it to be of the given type? How is that handled within Inkscape? I've encountered functions like ConvertToShape and ConvertToForme but am not quite sure what precisely they do, and furthermore my use case is converting 3D boxes to ordinary groups (while at the same time converting their sides to ordinary paths) so that I guess neither of these exactly fits my needs. Default Units

When you set the default units in the Document Properties dialog box, shouldn't the units in the tool controls bar reflect the same default. Currently, the default units in the tool control bar is pixels - and it doesn't reflect a different default unit set in the Document Properties dialog box.

I like all those very much - good work, they look great. I hope we can get them in 0.46. My one comment would be that I think, in the align/distribute set, the old icons for aligning text vertically and horizontally were slightly clearer. The decender on the lower case "y" makes it very obvious what will be done. Other than that 5 stars. I've taken most of the criticism to heart: A lot of icons are now more distinct - Tango uses a medium gray for many icons, but I changed it to a darker shade. This may hurt people who use dark themes so I'm not really sure it's a good idea. I also changed the flip/rotate icons back to something similar to the existing ones. Following Bulia's remarks about the tool icons, I decided to try and create my own icons instead of using the existing set from Art Libre: please tell me your opinion: are their functions clearer now? For me, that would be very welcome. By the way, the snapping settings in a per-document basis is in my oppinion something very annoying. I love these icons. They look very good. I have a couple of crits, though. In general, all the icons look pretty good and are far better (imo) than the original ones. I think they are not "working" in the fill and stroke tabs. They are too detailed for the size they are reproduced. Stroke Color and Stroke Style are hardly recognizable. The icon for the fill and stroke dialog maybe can be improved. I think it looks kind of off-style. The color in the pattern transform switch makes takes it away of the group. I'd go for grayscale for it too. About the tool icons, I really don't agree. Tango guidelines are for visual consistency across applications. Furthermore, Inkscape and gimp are part of a common workflow for libre graphics, so having different icons for similar tools is in my oppinion a mistake. Sincerely I find Gimp tool icons more appropriate for the tools. Pen and pencil tools, bucket fill, gradient are simpler. Those icons were already created and work fine, so why don't use them? I also have a bad feeling about using gradients for the shape tools. They are 2D sapes, so using gradients doesn't seem correct for me. Using strokes with thin lines is also a bad choice. Pencil, Pen and Spiral are examples of that. The strokes end up looking gray and blurry instead of well defined. The stroke doesn't fix the contrast problem, it makes it worst because of the small size. Besides that, the other icons look great and I'd really love to see them as default in 0.46 Again, great work and thank you for your effort!

The size is expressed in a unit that is 1/90th of an inch (corresponding to the default inkscape resolution of 90 dpi). That can be just right for svg and on-screen presentation, but for print those typographic size units are quite misleading. Regular users are used to typographic points, which are in DTP equal to 1/72th of an inch. The current units are only used in inkscape (ok, maybe they're the default units for svg but they have not much use for print). The problem of having these units is that an average user won't get what he/she expects. This is, imo, a critic usability issue. It's not intuitive, the result isn't what a regular user would expect and it forces the user to calculate the size (and forces to realize how, because there are no clue of what units are used in the UI). I think this issue should be marked as critic. Meanwhile, for everyone looking for typographic points in inkscape, there's a kind of workaround. Multiply the desired value by 1.25 and you'll get a equivalent size. (example: if you need 10pt type, then use 12.5 units) Regards, Gez.

Digits of precision

Hi all, I just rediscovered bugs #171486 and #171980, which both request higher precisions for grids/guides/document size, etc. I'm not a graphics designer, but the reasoning that people often need 1/16 (=0.0625) inch measurements makes sense to me. I gather that multiple degrees of precision are used throughout Inkscape. Grids allow 4 digits, guidelines 3, but document size (for example) only provides 2. I haven't checked all the other places but I'm wondering if it would make sense to unify all these. Isn't having different precisions simply inconsistent and annoying for users who need high precision for their work? Would this be a difficult/time consuming change or do people think it is something that can be achieved (or is desirable at all) for 0.46? In this case, what would be a good level of precision? Is there any reason not to provide 4 digits everywhere (apart from space considerations, maybe)? I hope this hasn't been discussed before or I'm touching on a sensitive issue. Just wondering. Max

Hi all, in the _write() methods for most SPObjects there are some lines of code similar to the following (this example is taken from sp-rect.cpp): if ((flags & SP_OBJECT_WRITE_BUILD) && !repr) { Inkscape::XML::Document *xml_doc = sp_document_repr_doc(SP_OBJECT_DOCUMENT(object)); repr = xml_doc->createElement("svg:rect"); } I have been wondering for quite some time in which situations these are called at all. Just now I discovered that this is the case when saving a file as plain SVG. Are there other circumstances, too? I'm asking because I'd like to know what kind of attributes should be set when building an object like this. For example, when I want to create a 3D box with this piece of code, should I set the "sodipodi:type" attribute or should I leave it out (so that effectively only an ordinary svg:g is created)? I'm inclined towards the latter because otherwise when the file is reopened there are also some other attributes missing (since it was saved as plain SVG) so the box is not shown at all because Inkscape is missing some information necessary to render it correctly. I just wanted to ask if my reasoning is correct or if I'm missing anything. Generally, it would be interesting to know what kinds of attributes should be saved to plain SVG. Apparently, various Inkscape-specific elements are saved (like LPEs), but they seem to be stripped off some attributes that might be necessary to fully recover them. printing broken!

The new print dialog looks impressive, but it does not work. I choose print to lpr and nothing happens (ubuntu 6.10). It worked fine before the last overhaul (about a month ago). Print preview button also does nothing, just closes the print dialog. Printing to file also fails to create any file. Well that symbol I gave was just an example of the BZ2_bzCompress@...1849.... @ notation. But yes, I would like to compile it without bzip2 support, but I'm not quite sure how to do that on windows command line. Do I use the source code from the bzip2 website or off the MingW/MSYS website? Do I compile on the windows command line? or in some other more linux friendly shell? or even in linux itself? MSYS uses a different runtime all together, its not supposed to be used for non-MSYS apps. RSVG dependancies

Hi All, After bulia's earlier comment about the possibility of rendering SVG previews with RSVG, I did some investigation. I think this *is* the way to go. Already I've got cairo working very nicely feeding graphics into my preview pane. librsvg looks pretty straight-forward as well. I'm having a slight problem adding the rsvg dependency. It seems that the version of the lib in the bundle has been compiled with bzip2.dll as a dependency. I can't possibly see why it would need to support that, but if we were to add bzip2, that only adds another 60kB. Problem is, I can't find a version of bzip2 which will play nice with librsvg.dll because the exported symbols in the my MSYS version of the dll that I have, are of the form "BZ2_bzCompress", but librsvg-2-2.dll imports "BZ2_bzCompress@...1333...". Where do the DLLs in the bundle come from? Could librsvg be compiled without bzip2 support? or Is a version of bzip2.dll with the correct exports available somewhere? and can I get that dll before the next bundle is released? because I don't want to wait for months any suggestions?
