Hi, sorry for the delay. I've been trying things out a bit, and I feel I haven't seen enough yet, but I won't have time tomorrow, so posting anyway now. So, it seems that what we still need for a manual (any kind) is a platform to create it (not only write, but also output to different formats). I have had a chance to look at 3 different platforms on my list, and I'm trying to outline the pros and cons, as I perceive them, please add yours to the list. There are many more platforms in existance (see also: https://github.com/PharkMillups/beautiful-docs#generating-docs), and if anyone here has some experience with them, please add. ************* - Gitlab Wiki + X, as suggested by Martin. WHAT: An online Wiki on gitlab with a source code editor, associated with a gitlab project. PROS: - custom-made to suit the project's individual needs (no specifics yet) - Preview functionality CONS: - only (limited set of) Markdown, RDoc or AsciiDoc - limited formatting options, formatting not so much about 'roles' of formatted text, but more about 'looks' - the backend isn't written yet - no option for branches via interface (so we could start writing for trunk, and continue fixing for stable) - no direct translation support - support for the backend depends upon a single individual, no user community - no WYSIWYG editor - no GUI access to git repo, for managing where to put uploaded files etc. - no GUI for undoing a change (like in a 'normal' Wiki), or looking at a diff EXAMPLE (frontend): https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape-web/wikis/home ************* - Gitlab Editor + Sphinx / readthedocs: WHAT: A git repository with an online source code editor and documentation update on readthedocs.org on save (i.e. commit). PROS: - available quickly (didn't know how it works exactly, but got it all up and running with test content within an evening) - uses git and reStructured Text - allows to have branches, so devel version features can be documented when they are coded - supports translations (not entirely sure how, though, haven't tested it yet, wanted to send this email instead. E.g. Django docs are translated. Fallback to English if no translation of a document. I guess this would be quick and easy to solve.) EXAMPLE (rendered documentation): https://www.flossmanualsfr.net/initiation-inkscape/ ************* All of them would be FLOSS, have support for internal linking, allow to insert images and allow editing via browser. ************* I wish it were possible to combine the ease of use of the booktype frontend with the portability, branch support, sustainability and versatility of the gitlab/sphinx/readthedocs backend... (In German that's called the 'eierlegende Wollmilchsau' - egg-laying wool- and milk-giving pig...) For the sphinx option, I believe I'd be able to take on the first setup and some of the tasks that come with customization and extending, as well as basic maintenance. Earlier this afternoon I had conversation with Marc about potentially publishing the Inkscape app to the Windows Store, the app store for Windows 10 PCs. The Windows Store now supports publishing Win32 Desktop apps with little or no code change using the Windows Desktop Bridge. Taking advantage of the Windows Desktop Bridge and Distributing through the Windows Store also provides simplified options for automated updates, easy install and uninstall, and provides a new distribution path for folks who may have not found Inkscape before. Our team has identified Inkscape as a top desktop app that we’d love to see in the Windows Store. Given this we have some resources to help with the process of getting this ported using the Windows Desktop Bridge and published to the Windows Store. The process itself is lightweight, and our team is equipped help walk you through getting it ported and published. We’ve done some early investigation on the Inkscape binaries and we haven’t identified any issues getting it published. If this is something that seems interesting to you, we can get together on the phone and talk through the details for the next steps of getting this published. Hi Friends, Thanks to Martin for creating the most amazing moderation system I've ever seen, for the website. Now that it's ready, volunteers are invited to join the website Moderation Team. Moderators work together to make decisions about each reported item (image, comment or member). No particular skills are needed. The biggest qualification is to care about maintaining the website as a beautiful and safe place for members to show their Inkscape work and interact. Most days you would only need to spend 15 to 20 minutes or less, although in the beginning, a little more time will probably be needed to become familiar with the system. And visit as many days as you can. The more moderators we have, the less time we each have to spend moderating. If you're interested in helping, please go to Community tab > Teams page (https://inkscape.org/en/teams/) and click on "Moderation Team". On the next page, click to request to join the team. Hi Friends, It seems like this last message about moderation policy got buried in all the recent important chatter. So I'm re-sending the most vital parts of it, so we can finish this up. For convenience, https://inkscape.org/community/coc/ And here's the suggested change: In the Guidelines for User-Submitted Content section, replace "Art and other content submitted to the Inkscape website should adhere to the following rules:" with "Content uploaded to the gallery should be related to Inkscape (e.g. created with Inkscape, created for use with Inkscape, showing how to work with Inkscape, etc.). We reserve the right to remove any content that does not seem appropriate or does not adhere to the following obligatory rules:" C R said > Little thing, but "created for use with Inkscape" could cover things like just regular images... in fact it could cover just about anything, even things made with Adobe Illustrator. I'd simply cut that bit out. Hhmm.....yes, I see what you mean. My interpretation of that, is for things like extensions or filters. But maybe there's a better way to say it? What about "created to be installed in Inkscape"? Or maybe just "to be installed in Inkscape"? That would eliminate any kind of image. Any other suggestions out there? Eduard? I wonder about adding "Inkscape Project"? Such as: "Content uploaded to the gallery should be related to Inkscape or the Inkscape Project (e.g. created...." Would it make sense to use gitlab's new subgroups feature for this? The inkscape-docs team could be a sub-team of Inkscape, that way. There are only 4 members as of now, so changing wouldn't be so difficult as it might be later on. Let's encrypt: is this possible?

Hi guys, I know that there is this amazing initiative out there called "Lets Encrypt" to enable a lot of sites to become HTTPS. Quoted from their own website: "*To enable HTTPS on your website, you need to get a certificate (a type of file) from a Certificate Authority (CA). Let’s Encrypt is a CA. In order to get a certificate for your website’s domain from Let’s Encrypt, you have to demonstrate control over the domain. With Let’s Encrypt, you do this using software that uses the ACME protocol <https://ietf-wg-acme.github.io/acme/>, which typically runs on your web host.*" If I got things right, they offer a free valid certificate. I know it must probably be expensive for us to enable thsi on our side (even though would give us even more credibility as an official website for the project). So... I was just wondering if this is doable from our perspective? Do we have an option to enable this on our side? Yes is gradient mesh, also works with all kind of gradients, fills, strokes, filters... you can apply individual things to each pieze and also allow live editing of nodes. Thanks for the feedbak! Hi all. Doing a design find a problem in a BSpline path that the closing node become auto-cusp, if move the path, go again to BSpline mode but on release again happends. The problem are I'm in the middle of the design and forget save a copy of the path and now I couldent reproduce. If anybody have the same problem, please send me the SVG. Thanks in advance. J.

Hi all. If anybody is interested there is 2 platforms inside Amazon to publish with no money, and a commission, of course, printed books and ebooks. You "only" do the book, design ... and star selling. Also there is a owner special price that allow to resell or for presents to people involved, etc, with less margin of course. Maybe we can do a printing book of inkscape. They also provide legal codes for the book. I think it can be done in B&W or color. Cheers, Jabier.

So the error appears to be that one of the leafs being used in our SSL chain (AdTrust AB) is SHA1, which is just nuts, no leaf should be using SHA1. But this also explains why many SSL checkers I've run the site through give it a clean bill of heath. Need help re-writing Eggbot extension

I hope this is the right place to make this request. If not, maybe someone can point me to a better venue. I'm a non-programmer with an idea that I need help with. I want to use the EiBot Board from the Eggbot to construct a polargraph using 2 stepper motors and 1 servo that will be controlled from within Inkscape. The original Inkscape extension is written in Python and actually produces some readable output on a prototype polargraph I've constructed (see photo below). I've taken a look at the original Python script and have identified the key statements for moving the pen around. Anyone interested in helping with this? Thanks! Dave

Hi all, The Paris hackfest is a go with board approval and a confirmed host (thanks Mc!). The hackfest dates are June 27th through July 1st. The first four days will be for hacking with a meeting with local Inkscape users on the fifth day (TBA). The hackfest will take place at Carrefour Numérique². This is a Fablab/hackerspace located inside Paris's excellent modern science museum. They use Inkscape all the time (and love it!). I would like to suggest to migrate to GitHub for version control, and to use CMake for creating build projects for Windows and Mac OS, other than Makefiles for *nix. Hi all. This week do some changes to LPE and merge two branches: With the changes to LPE we have too much better response from effects, reducing to minimun the need to write on the parameter data and reshow the parameter widgets. The two branches: First of all sorry for not wait enought for a aprove check but I have a goal in a new branch in development to organice the code in LPE part of inkscape and want this merged to it. The first branch allow store the default parameter for each new live effect. I attach a screenshot time ago. The second branch is a refactor to fillet/chamfer LPE based in a new way to store data for each node in a pathvector. Specialy thanks Nathan and Tweenk for his help in development. This new way for fillet chamfer is not backward compatible, this is the reason for merge "too early" and dont launch it in 0.92. My apologyes for the problems can happends with old files. Please convert to path our previous fillet/chamfer works prior update trunk. Usage feedback are welcome ;) All the best, Jabier.

Hi, Marc has been looking for free spaces in Paris to hold a hackfest. He's found what looks like an ideal spot: Carrefour Numérique² located at the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie (an excellent modern science museum) in northeast Paris. http://www.cite-sciences.fr/fr/accueil/ http://www.cite-sciences.fr/en/explore/learn/carrefour-numeriqu e2/ There are Inkscape users there and they've even written their own in- house Inkscape plug-ins to drive their CNC machines. They've hosted other open-source groups including a monthly Blender users group and twice-a-year Ubuntu parties. They can offer us a "Numeric classroom" with five tables with power and wired Internet connection from May 29th to June 2nd. The question is, is there sufficient developer interest to pursue this? Please respond if you can attend. If there is enough interest I will present this option at the board meeting Friday. Tav

Hi Friends, I've been helping to test some new moderation features which Martin has been working on (and Maren helping too), for the website. We have realized that (A) we might have different opinions about what the moderation policies should be, and (B) the current CoC might not cover them. But we all agree that the larger community should be involved, if the CoC needs to be edited. For convenience, the CoC says this: "Guidelines for User Submitted Content: Art and other content submitted to the Inkscape website should adhere to the following rules: -- Art must be your own original creation or derived from artwork available under an open licence. We cannot accept submissions that infringe copyrights. -- No nudity or graphic violence. (Note: we may allow this type of content once it is possible to tag it as such, but pornographic and/or illegal material would still be disallowed.) -- No content that is explicitly discriminatory in nature. -- No political agitation or totalitarian symbolism." Up until the moderation features are completed, installed and in use, the policy for images in the gallery has been this. As long as the image doesn't violate those 4 guidelines, it's acceptable, even though it may have nothing to do with Inkscape. After that, the gallery has been relying on a very small upload quota for members, to prevent mass spam attacks. In my opinion, resources uploaded to the website should bear some relation to Inkscape. Or more specifically, those which have no relation to Inkscape should not be allowed. My opinion of course ;-) So I propose the following, or something like it, should be the first item in the list of Guidelines for User Submitted Content. No doubt it could be worded better. -- Images must be created using Inkscape, in whole or in part; or depict how Inkscape was utilized for the user's project (such as a photo of a t-shirt which design was created using Inkscape). Or otherwise the image or resource must bear some relation to Inkscape, the Inkscape Project, vector graphics (or FOSS??) Does anyone have any thoughts or opinions on this? Ryan, The interesting thing about SVG is that it can be used for both web and print graphics design without a need for conversion. The main lack for print graphics design are CMYK and spot colour support in SVG 1.1, which if I'm correct should be addressed in SVG 2.0. Unfortunately SVG 2.0 is dropping support for SVG fonts, which would have been the nail in the coffin of PDF otherwise. For a brief moment SVG was bound to be the choice of archiving around the world, but that was not in the interests of the companies that contributed to the standard. Just link your 14 MB hanyul opentype font for those 20 characters of Chinese to load or generate a separate font file for every page rather than embed it into the document (or maybe that can be done using base64 encoding). Sadly SMIL got dropped likewise. CSS animation is the bomb,... duh or javascript (if not blocked by the users that are fed up with agressive ads and CSS bloat). However, the SVG standard still allows to be used for a single document type work flow for all 2d graphics design types. Multi page document types would be a great addition and to my idea could be fairly easily be incorporated by adding objects in page groups like is now done with layers. I guess that having layers and page groups would be more of a hassle as each page would need to have those layers embedded into their group and during saving as standard SVG they need to get separated into single pages as SVG doesn't do multi page docs. It's a pity I'm a lousy coder though if I'd started 8 years ago with it it might have been implemented by now and I been a better coder (I would think). I can imagine that making links to pages and clicking them might unhide this page layer while hiding the active layer. Wonderful visions of multiple documents opened in one instance of Inkscape (joy) that can be tabbed, viewed in multiple open windows so you could select links on the other page etc. CMYK is a nastier problem because as I understand it Cairo (the renderer) doesn't support that. I believe that the only feasible way is to make things in Inkscape, export a bitmap, import it into Scribus (because it doesn't support SVG filters) and have the 32 bit .png be converted to CMYK .tif if you actually need black (~140MB for A4 at 200 dpi). I'm not sure what happens to CMYK info that gets exported from Inkscape to PDF, though my business cards look pretty good, so it may actually retain the CMYK info. It may also have been converted by the printer, but as they were Chinese I didn't discuss much with them. Both aspects have been a long standing wish from the graphics designers user base of Inkscape, but they are considered hard to implement or just not that sexy or both. Personally, I've been using Inkscape for the past 8 years as a single work flow tool to create both print and web graphics. What is lost to many is that this is an enormous time saver for designers and it allows for a higher productivity. Or at least ideally. If anything I consider full CMYK support the main issue. If I only could sent my Inkscape document straight to a output device, I could dramatically cut my production time. In print, where many things need to be completed before the customer enters your office that would greatly improve the usability.
