Adding Inkscape ebuilds to official gentoo repository?

I've been looking forward to trying out Inkscape with gentoo, and was pleasantly surprised to find the inkscape-cvs ebuild in inkscape's CVS. I'd like to stick to release snapshots. Is there any chance Inkscape's devs can add the ebuild of each release to Gentoo proper? Sodipodi has been in there for a while now. Thanks, the recent features sound great.

Inkscape 0.37 / Milestone 4 is completed

All tasks for the 0.37 release are now addressed, most tasks having been finished, and a few postponed for future releases. So we're now done with 0.37 and on to 0.38! Bryce

Coding Style Document

The Code Style documentation is now available from the main website in the documentation section: http://www.inkscape.org/doc/ While we can consider it official enough to start using in updating the code, this document shouldn't be considered cast in stone. Project Status< Sunday, February 15, 2004 With a burst of effort we've completed the 0.37 release. It's amazing how much has gone into this release. The feature freeze lasted for a bit over a week and saw fixes to all but three of the critical bugs. Much work has gone into testing and improving the Windows exe package, in the hopes of ensuring our Linux-impared users have a not-too-unpleasant experience with our software. One thing that's been going on under the hood that deserves mention is Nathan and Peter's work at converting libnr and some of the other very low level pieces to C++, and in the process improving their numerical soundness. Bulia and Mental have also been chipping in ideas and code to this, in addition to their tireless efforts at improving the application. Ishmal has taken the mission of revising the file.cpp subsystem into the file ops and dialog pieces. He's also been updating nodepath.cpp to allow editing of both nodes and segments. Johan has been working on elaborating on and improving the fullscreen mode to engender a 'presentation mode', including a jarfile-based SVG compound document file format. Jon Cruz is working on incorporating finishing touches into the color dialog, now that users are appreciating the basic functionality of it. Mrdocs and many others have been supportive in helping with packaging, bug identification, code cleanup, and more over the past few weeks. We've also been pleased to see eager involvement from our users on the new inkscape-users@ mailing list, most notably in the form of creating clipart, that they're starting to accumulate for users of the program. Congratulations to everyone who contributed to making this release reality; it has been an impressive show of teamwork. Hi Bob, yes I have a german system where numbers are represented like 1.234,56 or 1234,56. But I wonder that sodipodi didn't had this problems at all. Adib. Strange bug in Windows build?

Hi I cannot keep my mouth shut anymore about this. It is probably some problem with my system if nobody else has noticed it ( I could not find anything similar in the buglist ). I am using WinXP (Home) and have always had this same problem with Inkscape, right from the first release. It has thus been unusable for me at work ( I have it on a linux box at home and it works fine there ). The most recent build I have is Bob Jamison's windows build called Inkscape 0.37-20040210. I have several of the GNU libraries installed in PATH, but none that I know of in system32. The thing is that if I use the freehand tool ( or any other tool than the predefined shapes ), as soon as I release the mouse button the shape literally goes haywire, that is, it becomes a big spindly mess. I set up four jpegs to show this effect. Mandrake RPM package (preliminary)

I've done a first cut at a Mandrake RPM package. There's nothing Mandrake-specific except the name, so in theory this would work for any RPM-based system. http://bryceharrington.com/inkscape-0.37-1.mdk90.i586.rpm Note that this is an i586 arch build instead of i386 or i686 as planned; I'm building the latter two presently and will upload them when they're done. The thing I need some feedback on is that I specified the Requires parameter listing out what appear to be the dependent libs & etc. I need to know if you try this rpm on your system and it reports that it won't install due to dependency issues. libnrtype -> Pango replacement plan

One of the tasks for this release was to investigate what tasks would be needed to replace libnrtype with Pango for font handling. I did a bit of looking around to see where libnrtype functions are being called. Here's my first cut at what it looks like might need to be done. Please review and comment on any additional tasks that you think will need to be done: * Add Pango as an optional dependency for Inkscape & test on our various target platforms * Modify widgets/font-selector.cpp to use Pango font new/ref/deref function as a compile-time option * Modify dialogs/text-edit.cpp to use Pango font new/ref/deref function as a compile-time option * Modify display/nr-arena-glyphs to use Pango font functions as a compile-time option * Create replacements for sp-text.cpp and sp-chars.cpp that uses Pango instead of libnrtype as compile time option * Test removal of libnrtype from Inkscape's Makefile & see what it breaks * Make Pango a required dependency for Inkscape & remove compile-time option scaffolding I've added these tasks to 0.43 and made Pangoification the objective for that release. If someone gets around to doing the tasks before that, that'd be lovely, otherwise we can plan on tackling it then. Bryce

Call For Clipartists

With Myrk's nifty ribbon.svg submission and Simarilius' SVG Signs contribution this morning, we're now officially ready to receive SVG clipart collections for Inkscape. Clipart is extremely important for users of vector art programs, because it can save a lot of time when making certain kinds of drawings, and to provide examples users can start with when making their own creations. I think it'd be most effective (and fun) to leave this process fairly open ended and flexible, since that's how we like to do things in this project. What we plan to do is treat each clipart "collection" as it's own discrete package, that is welcome to set its own rules and conventions as its contributors see fit. We'll distribute a few with Inkscape itself, others can be provided as separate add-ins. So, if you want you can establish your own collection of just your own work, or can collaborate with other users for a group effort. You can set up some organization and standards for quality control or to maintain a theme, or leave it freeform. Whatever works best for you.
