Progress on Windows Build

Hello everyone, i recently had some time to improve the work I have done on getting Inkscape to build on Windows using CMake. My changes are in a branch located here: lp:~faubulous/inkscape/cmake-win32 <https://launchpad.net/~faubulous/inkscape/cmake-win32> CHANGES: - Improved setting of the environment variables in ConfigPaths.txt along with sanity checks and error messages. - Full support for compiling with 32-bit or 64-bit devlibs/mingw. Simply put the paths in configure.bat and CMake should detect MinGW architecture automatically. - Fixed a bug in config.h.cmake which lead to Inkscape generating messed up APPDIR paths on Windows, which means: there are icons now. :) - Successfully tested C++ plugins. KNOWN ISSUES - Putting the locale folder in the generated build output crashes Inkscape on startup. So there are no translations yet. Does anyone have an idea? I invite everyone interested to checkout the branch and test it. In my point of view it is a substantial improvement over the current state in trunk, that's why I suggest merging it back. Unfortunatly I don't have commit access yet. Bug in Extracting Objects By ID? -- OOPS

SORRY. I accidentally hit the SEND button. Here is the email I was trying to write I am very new to both Inkscape and SVG, but I think I have found a little bug. I would be happy to get the source and try to fix it, but I would like confirmation that it is, indeed a bug. I am trying to extract objects by ID into plain SVG files with the command-line interface. For example: inkscape -z -i blue -j -l blue.svg drawing.sv This extracts the object, all right, but it doesn't appear in the right place, so that the icon is blank. For example, drawing.svg has a blue rectange (ID blue) whose dimensions are shown in the UI as height 150, width 200, x=100, y=625. The height of the document is 1052.36220 (A4 at 90 dpi.) When I look at drawing.svg in a text editor, there's a little rounding: width="199.01431" height="149.01431" x="100.49285" y="277.85504" The difference in the y-coordinate comes because Inkscape's UI places the origin of both the viewport and the object at the bottom left instead of the upper left, so to get the y-coordinate for SVG we subtract both the "UI coordinate" and the rectangle height from the viewport height. Now, when I look at blue.svg in the UI the x-coordinate of the rectangle is 0 but the y-coordinate is not. The SVG shows transform="translate(-100.00001,-625.00001) That is, the UI coord is used, not the SVG coord. If I change the y-coord in the UI to 0, then the SVG file shows transform="translate(-100.00001,-277.36222) and the icon appears as one would expect. It seems clear to me that this is a bug, since the blue.svg file says, viewBox="0 0 199.99999 149.99999" As I said earlier, I'm so new to this that I would like someone to confirm that this is a bug before I go and fix it.

Hello Martin, The main problem with it is the lack of knowledge about open source software in the first place. It would need a fairly elaborate marketing plan and implementation of such a plan to get things going. It soon will be the summer holidays, when pretty much nothing happens. For me that means having to scrape a living first and then figure out what to do with the remaining time. As the remaining time is related to the scraping a living thing, I will probably have to focus on whatever makes a buck and then eventually turn to the greater interests. If it would be possible to get some funding to produce a marketing plan and if found acceptable to implement, then I could focus on such a thing. However, in a society where there is no wellfare for non citizens (and I can never be a citizen here), my first and foremost tasks is to make a buck. Though I would love create a campaign, get all materials translated and execute such a thing, I cannot bear any cost involved. Maybe it is something for crowd funding? The cost wouldn't be all that impressive, but it might take half a year and several visits to places in this rather large country to get things going. All in all I would expect to have expenses of about 10 to 20k USD, cost of living, translations, printed materials, flights.. I would also need some pompous title to throw around in order to open doors, something like "Special ambassador for the Inkscape foundation". Ehm,.. yeah,.. really. That kind of nonsense helps. If making the marketing plan could get funded for about 1k USD, I could spend my summer holiday on making that and creating a proposal. The possible benefits would be a greater awareness of the existence of Inkscape in China, sponsored translations, code commits, invitations for talks and lectures in China and Chinese participation in the LGM meetings. So,.. is it worth the effort? The trouble for many developers is that we in the west don't know how to talk to, set up or properly respect the contributions that may result from such a project. The best way to progress forward is for someone like yourself to take the lead. Ask for certain resources to be put aside, for examine where on what pages and on what languages of what pages. How big, etc would be appropriate. And then deliver the right people. And this what makes it a job for yourself rather than something that could happen organically. Much of what happens in inkscape is inertia and organic self-interest with a bit of careful guidance and thoughtful direction of contributions. If you're interested in a community management position to deliver contributions from China (in whatever way possible) I'm willing to sponsor and support where I can from here. Fwd: New batch files in trunk

Hello everyone, I created these files to simplify building Inkscape on Windows. Originally they were not located in the root of the trunk, but in a separate 'build' folder because it is good practise for CMake to not build in the root/source directory. Somehow they moved when the merge was created. Anyway, there's a reason for these files to be there. In particular: configure.bat: Deletes the CMake cache and regenerates all the makefiles to be sure that any changes in CMake files are actually applied. I spend hours on trying to solve an issue just to find out that relevant Makefiles were not regenerated by CMake for any reason. Moreover, the trunk version of the file is missing an option to CMake I had to add in order for it to build at all. I do not know why it was removed: REM Configure using the MinGW compiler chain. cmake -D"CMAKE_SYSTEM_PREFIX_PATH:PATH=C:\MinGW64\mingw64\x86_64-w64-mingw32" -G "MinGW Makefiles" .. Surely is should use the MINGW_PATH environment variable here, but I had serious issues without this option set. The file could also be used to setup the system environment variables, such as MINGW_PATH if they are not set to a valid value and store them somewhere making the setup somehow more user friendly. touch.bat: Since there is no such thing as touch on Windows, I created the script to reset the modification dates of all .obj files in case of changes to the CMake configuration which would trigger a full rebuild. This is simply a time and enery saver. I did not have the chance to check out trunk and try to build it on my machine. But I will do it this week. I saw that the wiki got updated with new instructions for compiling on Windows 64-bit. Extensions - file browsing

I am helping someone build an extension which needs to select a folder. The folder contains many templates of pattern data in file form (with png thumbs). The user selects one to see that pattern interpreted in inkscape. Currently the best I can do is: - check for Tkinter at the head - use its file browser if exists. E.g. put a try around this: try: from Tkinter import * import tkFileDialog as tkf except: tk = False else: tk = True and later invoke tkf if tk is true. This works in a non-inkscape scope but not inside inkscape, Tkinter is not in the internal path. Question: 1. What's the preferred method (if any) for prompting for a folder or file in an extension ? 2. Do I have to move all of Tkinter to the extensions folder to get access to it. I want my solution to work across platforms. Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Hello all, When Martin brought up the idea if I wanted to do the translation to Chinese, I had to inform him that sadly, my Chinese sucks. Nor do many Chinese jump to the idea of doing anything for free. Time is precious here where students start at 8.00 and end some days at 22.00. Memorising Mao's rantings can take a lot of energy. However, it occurred to me that we might very use sponsoring for translations and other tasks. If we would allow them to add a line of text to documents and have some sponsor page on the website, we could probably find a lot of institutes interested in sponsoring parts of the project with whatever means we would allow. The sponsor page should allow them to post a Logo, name and a short description of what part of the project they are involved in. To my idea it would be a great idea to get more exposure on Inkscape in places where not that many people have ever heard of it and maybe even inspire some competition on obtaining sponsorship. Of course we already have a large number of largely anonymous sponsors that have build the project so far, but rather than only going for crowd surfing, we could use the power of sponsoring to get things done and get the word out that Inkscape not only exists, but actually is an option. Already we have companies sponsoring part of the project by their own interest, which is how we end up with extensions for cutters and embroidery. True, they tend to be low profile sponsors, but I fail to see why we shouldn't embrace those that would like to be named. What are your feelings, thoughts and objections to something like that? Offset LPE

Hi to all. Finaly I could end my work in Leeds. Based on Join Type LPE and in the new Boolops code, now we have a new LPE offset. In comparsion whith SPOffset: Similar speed, handle more cases, allow joins not only rounded and give better results -sometimes-. The branch: lp:~inkscape.dev/inkscape/offset I get some wrong results on cusp nodes also in JoinType LPE and problems with text give bools some times to crash. I think when Boolops and JoinType is fixed the LPE work like a cham. Cheers, Jabier.

AppImage for easy distribution of nightlies and releases

Hello Inkscape developers and maintainers, today I would like to propose an easy way to run and test Inkscape on various Linux distributions. Inkscape used to provide upstream- packaged Autopackages, but since I could no longer find them, I wonder whether this project might be interested in providing AppImages, which are essentially self-mounting ISOs that contain Inkscape and all dependencies it needs to run that cannot be assumed to be part of the base system (Linux distribution). This means that projects like Inkscape can package once and reach users of most desktop Linux distributions. http://www.appimage.org Linus Torvalds recently wrote about AppImage: "Sure, it means that the end result is much bigger than a distro-native binary would be, but if you want a way to build applications for your users without limiting them to a particular distribution, or having to build fifteen different images, it really looks like it works very well.=EF=BB=BF" - https://plus.google.com/+LinusTorvalds/posts/WyrATKUnmrS I prepared an AppImage of the bzr version. You can download it from https://bintray.com/probono/AppImages/Inkscape/_latestVersion#files Simply download, chmod a+x, and run. The recipe script that generated it is is linked below, in case you want to see how it was done and improve it. Using the recipe, it should also be easy to generate an AppImage for 32-bit systems: https://github.com/probonopd/AppImages/tree/master/recipes/inkscape I have tested it on a couple of different distributions with success: * CentOS-7-x86_64-LiveGNOME-1511.iso * debian-live-8.0.0-amd64-xfce-desktop+nonfree.iso * elementary_OS_0.3_freya_amd64.iso * Fedora-Live-Workstation-x86_64-23-10.iso * ubuntu-16.04-beta2-desktop-amd64.iso I had to work around an issue with "undefined symbol: g_type_check_instance_is_fundamentally_a" by bundling glib2, this makes it run also on * antergos-2014.08.07-x86_64.iso * linuxmint-17.3-cinnamon-64bit.iso * ubuntu-14.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso Possibly we can find a cleaner way (e.g., use CentOS 6 as the build host) to make this workaround unneccessary. Most likely it will run on others, too - and with some fine-tuning of the recipe (i.e., bundling additional dependencies) on even more. Probably the recipe is not perfect yet and might be missing some stuff, but that should be relatively easy to fix. If there is a continuous build system in place, this could be integrated so that continuous/nightly/weekly images get built. Having such builds should allow more users to run the latest bleeding-edge version, test on multiple systems, and give earlier feedback. Of course the AppImage format could also be used to distribute stable/testing versions to users of most Linux distributions. I have set up a cloud-based build system where I do the builds on travis-ci using a build system living inside a Docker image generated on Docker Hub. You can see this system in action here: https://github.com/probonopd/AppImages/ Of course this would be even more useful if it was integrated into the official Inkscape build system. There is also an update mechanism in the works which allows users to download binary deltas between the version they have and the latest version. This works without central servers or repositories, you could run it on your own project infrastructure. Makes updating continuous builds really fast and easy. https://github.com/probonopd/AppImageKit/blob/master/ AppImageUpdate.AppDir/README.md (this is purely optional though). Is the Inkscape project interested in maintaing an upstream-generated AppImage, as projects like Krita, MuseScore, and Scribus already do? Upstream packaging would have the advantage that users/testers get the software exactly in the way the upstream team intended, with the correct versions of the libraries bundled together with the application. Both of them contain a particular system's specific configurations like a fixed path and a reference to some script/program (forfiles) so little chances they are useful for others. So I went ahead and wrote a patch that enables you to switch method at runtime, which includes a user pref to remember what your choice is (the default is the one that allows for the old method which is also currently default). Any saved file will not take this preference with it, in case there was any doubt. I'm experiencing errors in compiling under Windows, both XP and 7 64 bit in the last few days. I've seen many commits in the meantime but none address the problem. We had a meeting this afternoon and have founded a new inkscape team called "Inkscape UI", we will be using the tasks in the notes below to create the needed tools and documents and will be working up to having a central place for all inkscape mockups, designs and user experience tests. As we work through making sure designers have the right tools, there will be a process where we figure out how to translate designs into code. All of us may have to look at designs from time to time, comment on them and if they are interesting, take them to trunk and forge them. Hackfest 2016: Discussions Summary

Hi, The Hackfest was a great success. We got about 70 patches in to the code base. Highlights include fixing the GTK3 flickering bug and getting CMake to work on Windows. While most of our time was spent on hacking, we did take some time to discuss various issues. Here is a summary of those discussions. Tav Hackfest 2016 Discussions Summary ================================ Infrastructure: -------------- Git/CI: Consensus is that moving to git soon is a good idea. Benefits: 1. More familiar to outside developers. 2. Bazaar not being actively developed. 3. Easy to separate out libraries as submodules. Krzysztof has prepared a cheat-sheet http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Working_with_Git Libraries that can be turned in to submodules: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Embedded_libraries lib2geom can be made into a submodule first, removing duplicate code. Krzysztof will provide documentation on how to make sublibraries. We recommend moving to GitHub for CI integration. CI (Continuous integration) Consensus is to go with GitHub. This is the most maintainable option with our limited developer resources. Mailing Lists Consensus is to move to a server at OSUOL after server with Mailman3 is available. Mailman3 is a significant improvement over Mailman2. Martin has volunteered that Inkscape is willing to install Mailman3 for OSUOL. (OSUOL has said that it is a low priority project for them and it could be one and a half years before they get to it.) Code ---- C++11 Consensus is to require C++11 after 0.92 released. Developers will be able to use C++11 features. GTK3 GTK3 offers significant improvements in support for OSX and Windows. Consensus is to switch default compilation to GTK3 after 0.92 to get more eyes looking at the problems. Most, if not all, dialogs will need to be tweaked. Then remove GTK2 after the 0.93 release (we have 700 #ifdef's to switch between the two builds). CMake The CMake build system is getting very close to being ready. We can now compile and link Inkscape on Windows using CMake. A lot of work was done at the hackfest (and at LGM). Having a good CMake build is the only hard requirement for 0.92. Roadmap ------- Krzysztof has volunteered to update the roadmap with the things we discussed during the hackfest (CMake, C++11, GTK3, etc.). Community --------- Fund-raising We discussed various options such as using patreon.com, snowdrift.coop, flattr.com. CR will do a detailed investigation of the options. Paid Development We are basically waiting on the website before we can start using our paid development model.

Website access in China - Fix applied

Dear Inkscape Users and Developers, After a lot of backwards and forwards between osuosl and fastly.net we have put in place a solution for our website's access in China. The problem was that our chinese visitors would be able to get the website, but not any of the media (or downloads) because of their great firewall. The solution was a CNAME from media.inkscape.org to fastly and some special dns configuration which I barely understand to solve the issue with access to fastly caches. (I copied and pasted what people said in two tickets and acted as a manual ticket express for the professionals) This solution is now live and I invite people in China to test the website and please report back if they can see any issues. The very recent pull "bzr pull" at the linking step are a error. 0.91 performance when zoomed in

Hello everyone, I work with Inkscape nearly every day, but am now experiencing some painfully slow performance with some files (that I cannot share right now, sorry!) I'm working with Inkscape 0.91 r13725 on Ubuntu 15.10 with an i7-5500 and 16GB of RAM. The designs are not particularly complex, but have one feature that might be relevant: I'm working with dimension accurate objects that can be very small, 0.1mm and below (I design printed circuit boards). The slowness becomes painful when zoomed in onto the small objects; it happens when I try zooming, choosing objects, moving them, and even changing tools from 'node' to 'select'. nearly every such operation I get the greyed-out Ubuntu stall. Working on the design when zoomed out is not practical, but it is quite a bit faster performing. Another thing that's happening that could be related is the following prompts keep appearing on the console: (inkscape:15569): Pango-CRITICAL **: pango_font_family_list_faces: assertion 'PANGO_IS_FONT_FAMILY (family)' failed (inkscape:15569): Gtk-CRITICAL **: IA__gtk_tree_view_scroll_to_cell: assertion 'tree_view->priv->tree != NULL' failed I could not find any report for how to handle these, and discover if they are related to the performance problems. Searching for a solution through looking at bug reports, I've tried: * Running with fresh preferences.xml * Geometric bounding box * Reducing the complexity of the design * Hiding layers (there are 24 layers) to only ones that are relevant for the operation (usually only two layers) * Hiding rulers and scroll-bars * Maximising memory and threads (with restart) I'm out of ideas, and I hope that someone might be able to recommend something. Inkscape build issues

There appears to be a build breakage in Launchpad - see link below. ../../src/widgets/eek-preview.cpp:499:32: error: ‘style’ was not declared in this scope gtk_paint_diamond( style, Also, last time I checked, 'make dist' when configuring with autoconf was not producing a valid dist, which I need in order to compare with the cmake-produced dist tarball. If I'm doing the wrong thing, please tell me how to proceed. Please forgive me if I'm causing any inconveniences and consider providing some guidance on to which wishlist should I address this request. Thank you very much.) * * * Hi everybody. First of all, excuse my English. It is not my mother tongue. Please also bear in mind that I'm not an expert Inkscape user and the terms I'll be using to describe my request can be ambiguous or even wrong (I hope not, though. ;)) I've been using Lilypond music engraving software (lilypond.org) for a while and I've been experiencing the pain of having to manually adjust slurs (actually drawn as bezier curves) when I want to get publishing-quality scores. The most straightforward way to achieve this is using \shapeII function in one of the following forms: \shapeII #'(()(polar 50 0.35)(polar 30 0.25)()) or \shapeII #'(()(absolute-polar 50 0.35)(absolute-polar 30 0.25)()) (Cf. the document by the creator of the function: http://lilypond-stuff.1065243.n5.nabble.com/file/n5705621/shapeII-examples.… , paragraph 4, "polar coordinates" info. Cf. also https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/lilypond-user/2013-11/msg00823.html for more information.) The point of my request is making Inkscape assist slur editing/fine-tuning in a double way: first, taking advantage of the direct graphical editing capabilities it offers, and secondly, providing the relevant information generated in such a form the Lilypond function can understand ---the more direct, the better. The intended workflow would be: 1) Lilypond compiles the text file and outputs a pdf file. 2) Inkscape imports the generated pdf. 3) Slurs are manually edited. 4) For each slur, mathematical/Lilypond-understandable info is shown/generated (possibly by tweaking some Inkscape extension in python?) so that 5a) it can be at least manually typed into the Lilypond file, thus saving endless, painful recompiling trial-and-error attempts to get the satisfactory slur. Or, ideally, 5b) the gathered/computed info is formatted (by the extension?) and shown (directly on the svg file, on an auxiliary window?) so that it can be copied-pasted onto the lilypond file, or, even better, 5c) piped to a script that modifies the original Lilypond text file by inserting the data properly. In this case, I don't know whether the fact that the requested feature can be written in python and that the Lilypond file can be manipulated using the Frescobaldi editor (frescobaldi.org), which is written in python and allows easy extension of its features through python snippets, could automate the process even more. :) Back to the \shapeII function, the relevant stuff for the present discussion are (absolute-polar 50 0.35) and (absolute-polar 30 0.25) parentheses. Graphically speaking, this pair of parentheses contain the mathematical description of the handles used to control bezier curves drawing in Inkscape. The absolute-polar notation that shapeII understands fits *almost* directly to the data about the angles of the handle that Inkscape shows at the bottom of the main window when you're moving it (That means Inkscape somehow already provides this data, the problem is how to made it available for the requested feature). The only thing that should be tweaked when doing the math is modifying the value Inkscape gives for the *right* handle. For this value to be valid in the lilypond shapeII function it has to be subtracted to 180: valid right handle angle value = 180 - Inkscape value Secondly, the info at the bottom of the main window also tells us about the length of the moving handle. The second numerical value inside the parentheses is the ratio between the length of the handle and the distance between the distal nodes: \shapeII #'(()(absolute-polar 50 A)(absolute-polar 30 B)()) where A = left handle length / distal length B = right handle length / distal length That means getting the info about the length of the handles (the same as with angles) *and* calculating the distance between two points, i.e., the first and last nodes of the bezier curve. I'm aware this can be manually done with the measuring tool Inkscape provides, but here an automatic calculation of the distance is needed. As I said at the beginning, I'm not an expert at all, but I think that this request can be easily implemented by a python programmer (perhaps based on Inkscape-0.91/share/extensions/measure.py file?) and it would mean a *huge* improvement for the Lilypond user's community. Hello Saar, Indeed you found your culprit, but added to that I see a lot of transparency objects in your design. If you have many layers as your design does and each of those has transparent objects in them I can imagine that things got a tad slow. Instead of a simple integer being used to display a single colour every layer of transparency needs to get calculated, added to the the previous one using floating point calculations. I imagine that this is handled on a logarithmic scale 1,2,4,8 etc. per layer used or per overlapping object. If your bottom layers were masked stacks of the same type of objects, I can imagine that the calculations of the masks are applied after going through the whole object stack calculation. Maybe using clips instead would make the result faster as well as those are simpler calculations to my knowledge. In any regard using lots of floating points explains the delay in screen refresh as well. It certainly isn't the amount of nodes. Cheers, Jelle

I see we have many of these reflection modes which can only be reached via Edit/Clone/CreateTiledClones... (Only one shape can be selected at a time when hitting Create. I guess you have to group them first) I found this tutorial - http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Tiles.html I seem to recall a lot of UI work was done on a way to make his work - maybe a year or more ago. I'm clearly using the wrong google search terms :( Did any of it make it into a release ? GSOC ?

Saar, Can you take a look at the objects using the XML editor and see what that tells you? To me it sounds like you may have some opacity or blur filters still going on. I made quite extensive tests of cygwin with MinGW cross vs MSys2 and came to the conclusion that cygwin requires much less patching and messing around than MinGW for building most libs. The only advantage of MSys2 is that GTK and all its dependencies are available pre-built, but the MinGW GTK build on cygwin is fairly straight forward, it just takes build time. On cygwin I mostly use a generic download / configure / make / install shell function for building. Some libraries need a patch or two, but with cygwin this is the exception, not the rule. I think that maintainability and cleanliness is more important than build time, since most people won't touch the libs and build them at most once a quarter. As long as it is fully automated, I don't care if it takes 3 hours. Another reason I finally settled with cygwin is that the scripts are 99% identical to what is needed for a cross build on Linux. The deviations with MSys2 tend to be larger. But I guess this is a topic one can argue about forever. How about we share our scripts, experience and ideas and work on both MSys2 and cygwin+MinGW in parallel and see what is easier in the end? Most of the work is solving specific build issues and it would be great to have someone to discuss this. I would suggest that we take this off list. Eventually we probably need to move to Git. The user interface is completely atrocious, but the fact it works from a single directory by default is very convenient when using Eclipse, and Eclipse is an elephantine monstrosity but has good code navigation. This could also encourage more people to contribute, since almost all OSS developers know Git, while a very limited number know Bazaar at this point. The bug tracker and answer tracker should definitely stay on Launchpad, but what about the code? Should we use Launchpad's nascent Git support, or some other site like Github? What people think? Proposal for building Windows devlibs and for windows build environment setup

Dear Inkscape Team, I have a proposal for improving the delivery for the windows libs and for setting up a build environment. The current method of delivering binary libs has two disadvantages: 1.) it restricts the user to a very specific binary gcc build (at least the docs say so). 2.) it is tricky to check if this delivery method is GPL compliant. According to GPL if you deliver binaries you also have to deliver sources, and it is a lot of work to check all libs licenses and to check if all required sources are in the delivery. Please note that it is NOT sufficient to say "this is standard GPL software and you can download the sources from the official sources". If you delivery binaries, you have to deliver the sources. Now to my proposal: for another open source project I created 2 scripts: one which automatically sets up a fresh cygwin with MinGW cross support and whatever else is needed and another one which downloads and builds a bunch of libraries and apps from sources, including GTK, cairo and pango. About 70% of the libs inkscape requires are built by this script, so it wouldn't be that much work to add the remaining 30%. This does not just setup a build environment and builds everything automatically, it also documents exactly what was used and how it was built (and possibly patched). So my proposal would be to instead of delivering the libs as binaries and lengthy instructions just deliver these two scripts. The scripts are fairly simple and well documented. The build for inkscape and all its libs from scratch would likely be 2..3 hours on a decent machine. Would others appreciate such a mechanism to build inkscape on windows? Usually it would be a single call to a DOS batch file to setup cygwin and start the download and build process. Best regards, Michael

Fwd: CMake Windows build: should it work?

Dear Inkscape Team, I was on travel an wanted to work a bit on my embroidery stuff on the way. Unfortunately I just had a Windows laptop with me and I found that building the latest trunk version on Windows with CMake doesn't work out of the box. First question: is this supposed to work or is CMake for Windows work in progress? I could only get it to build after adding a few libs. Also the order in which libs are given to the linker I had to change. The make install target just installs gettext stuff, nothing else, which makes it tricky to run the built exe. In case this is known to not work, any nobody is working on this, I could work on fixing this (I am already quite far). Otherwise are there some docs on how to configure it correctly with CMake on Windows? Best regards, Michael

Participation in LGM [Design]

Hi everyone! Since this year is the LGM and the hackfest it could be a good moment to meet personally with some of you and talk/learn about the Inkscape interface design. In a conversation with Ilmari, from the LibreOffice team, he pointed out that they currently have a design team with great results. A design team could (should!) also include developers, who like to hack on the UI and how functionality is presented to the user. We are also part of the Open Source Design community with tons of designers with interest in contributing but have little idea on how to start contributing to projects like Inkscape. This Design team could help new contributors to be useful on the current development. We really want to contribute to Inkscape with our skills :) Do you think it would be good to create an official Design team inside Inkscape? In a conversation with Jabier he suggested us to meet in the hackfest in Leeds, we are a group of 2-3 designers going to the LGM and, if you think it would be useful to meet in the hackfest, we could make it to Leeds on 13th (arriving 12th night). Inkscape with touch screens?

Hi Friends, Occassionally we've had a message in forums about using Inkscape with a touch screen. And in the past I've always answered "not yet". But now I'm shopping for a new laptop, and approx 90% of the laptops available in my RAM range (16 gb) are "2 in 1" types which have touch screens. I've had to search rather closely to find a non-touch screen! If I look in the lower range of RAM (around 6 gb) the available systems are roughly split between touch and non-touch screens. But even then, it gives the impression that touchscreen computers are much more common than I had imagined. The last time I bought a new computer, touchscreens were rare! Anyway, I wanted to ask the development community -- will Inkscape ever be made to work using a touch screen, or will it always be mouse (or graphics tablet/pen) driven (also commandline)? Or is using a touch screen essentially the same as a graphics tablet, and Inkscape is already touch-capable? A couple of things are missing across the community. 1 - tutorials for using gcode tools, and 2 - support for questions and problems with those extensions. I know that the extensions all reference a single, 30-page topic in a Russian forum, as a place to get support. But we still are getting questions posted in other forums, that we just can't answer. I have a small nespresso coffee-pod type coffee machine which fits nicely in a bit of hand luggage. I'm also willing to smuggle a truly questionable quantity of coffeepods to Leeds, since it seems most folks who are attending love coffee to some degree, and it's friggin miles to the nearest coffee chain stores. What I want to know is: who wants coffee, and how much per day. I'm going to bulk-order nespresso coffeepods (or reasonable facsimiles), which will get them cheaper than they would be otherwise. If you are attending the inkscape hackfest, and want coffee, just reply with your average per-day quota, and I'll add it all up to see how much to lug along. ANN: reproducible build & test virtual machine

Hi Inkscape list! I've worked on a Vagrantfile* over the past few months, that is able to bring up a virtual build- and test machine for Inkscape. The VM is running on Lubuntu linux (lightweight Ubuntu) so you can actually run the inkscape binary produced by the build. You can, of course, modify the Inkscape source code within the VM, and rebuild. So if you got Vagrant and VirtualBox up and running, creating a development environment for Inkscape is just a "vagrant up" away. Because of this, it is relatively simple to develop Inkscape regardless on what OS&machine you are on, be it Windows, Mac or Linux - as long as you can install VirtualBox and Vagrant you are good to go. Quick fix suggestion: Filter document "Page Size" options based on "display units" drop-down

Working on the video templates today and noticed that many of the options for template sizes that are present in the "New from template" dialogue are missing in the Document Properties options (including video templates). But... Rather than include a search (which may be nice but time-consuming as a fix). Why don't we include them all, but filter the options shown based on the units selected in the "display units". So if the user chooses "in" then show all options with dimensions listed in inches In my case, the template would naturally be in px for video, so having chosen "px", I'd get my 1080p template right away without having to open a new file (or remember that 1080 is the height rather than the width, which always gives me issues remembering "1920" for some reason). At the least, I think it should make the px values float to the top of the list, for convenience. The sizes are somewhat haphazardly listed at the moment. Thoughts? -C

Linked offset broken in trunk

Hey, just noticed that linked offset now produces very bad results. I'm using Inkscape 0.91+devel r (Mar 14 2016) To reproduce results: 1. Draw any shape 2. Add a linked offset to the shape 3. Drag the linked offset handle out or in. Star and rounded rectangle example with linked offset here: http://www.opendesignstudio.org/inkscape/linked_ofset_problem.png As you can see the results are wavey/garbagey. Whatever changes were made to the linked offset modifier seem to have broken it pretty badly. :/ Thoughts? -C

Installing Inkscape nightly alongside stable 0.91 on Linux Mint 17.3 Is that possible? And if so, how exactly? Or does it install like that already? I'd rather not replace my stable release with the nighlies, but would like to be more active testing now I can finally report bugs. But I can also imagine wanting to use a nightly as production tool if the bugs can be avoided and the functionality gain warrants its use. I also wonder if some of the bug fixes couldn't be released as Bugfix package rather than to have to wait for a long time till the next stable release. I can imagine that to be a lot of work to keep track of though, so not sure about the feasibility of it. Or maybe some kind of recommended Beta update (as Inkscape is still Beta anyway), that has proven to have some improvements making it worth upgrading. Being able to use Shift+Del and Shift+Insert for text springs to mind as an particularly annoying omission in 0.91 (as years of usage has carved that path in my neural network) but fixed in later nightlies. Hello, I'm Adrian Boguszewski. I'm 5th year student in the field of Computer Science at Gdansk University of Technology, Poland. I'm interested in Better data structure for selections project. I have expierence with C++ and STL and I know many data structures (e.g. lists, trees, graphs, hash tables), their time and space complexities. Moreover I implemented some of them, during my studies, myself. I've already sucessfully compiled Inkscape and I'm going to start with learning the code and bugs fixing. Took some time and the kind assistance of Maren to get this posted. Here is the example I tried to get to show. I think it works now, but I am not quite sure as I can't even get the CSS code to load from the site. Blame the Chinese govt and NSA for adding 1.8 seconds to my latency for a total time of 3 seconds to Europe. Yeah,.. timeout edge. Well,.. Considering the move to put some effort into a new UI design, I say we could combine > Customisable UI with >Inkscape that works on tablet. Hell, just a customisable toolbox would do the trick, for starters. If you can initiate a widget to appear on screen now, I cannot imagine it to be that difficult to create some buttons named ABC etc. that when clicked executes a key combo, that you could just add to the default one. Ehm,.. better still if you could replace the default options (such as tweek, star, spiral and 3d box) with something you actually would like to use and/or change the locations of such tools so something like the bucket fill tool and color dropper don drop of my low res screen. Those are nice gadgets, but the past 13 years I've hardly ever used them. A golden ratio drawing tool would make more sense to me than the spiral. It would also allow for some of the those useful LPE's and extensions to find a place on the desktop rather than hidden in the drop down menu. So would I rather increase the productivity of Inkscape than add more options? Yes, I would! Reorganising the UI to my idea is at the same level of importance as optimising code considering the plethora of hard to access options we already have, but hardly use. Call me a point and click addict if you like, but having a visual reference is important to me. There are an increasing number of machines with Wacom compatible screens. The obvious advantage of those being that you see where you put your pen. As the Microsoft Surface was quite an success, more producers are hopping on that train. Huawei Mate springs to mind as a serious contender with a lot more bang for the buck. I have an old IBM x41 with Wacom sensitive pen input, but the use is limited because the resolution of the screen is a mere 1024x768. However, when drawing vectors that doesn't hurt too much. What does hurt is the absence of a widget to enable all the CTRL SHIFT ALT DEL keyboard shortcuts and right mouse button actions by pen input. Having a full keyboard on screen is an option, but that eats pixels. There are also quite a few Android tablets with pressure sensitive inputs that you can use in combination with VNC to display your workstation workspace and then draw away on it with the pen input interface. Samsung Note slabs are quite useful for that. On f-droid you can find the required tools for that. Another place to find them are in the form of white boards in education. Basically an over-sized Wacom compatible board with a video beamer or direct large screen layer, though the latter are less sensitive in my experience. As they are intended for finger input, the resolution of the input isn't all that great and in combination with a video beamer, the position of the finger on the screen needs to be calibrated and even then is always a bit off. Having bigger interaction handles would be useful. You can already increase the range, but not the visual size. That said, with the increased screen resolutions of tablets, the case for using those for illustrators that want to move from paper to unlimited document sizes and paper supply becomes more appealing. I suggest anyone interested to walk into a shop and play with the Microsoft surface pen. It is very responsive and smooth to use and everyone used to drawing can easily adopt to it. The things get flogged at a rather steep price and tit comes with MSW 10, so hardly something I can recommend, but the tech is there to follow. Finger input may seem useless and can be discarded as irrelevant for most purposes, but is the way you interact with whiteboards. There you have a single touch interface, so right mouse button widgets are less than useful. I can also imagine people starting to use VR inputs in the foreseeable future. Dear Inkscape, These are the results from todays user testing at SpinachCon 2016 here in Boston: * Selecting objects is hard when there are transparent areas * Double clicking often hit mistakenly * Tools for text are hard to find compared to other tools (no context when text and path selected for example) * Text did not indicate it's text alignment when changed (user was confused) * Tried to drag the text node (which indicates the text alignment) * Colour wheel was hard to use (dragging attempted) * Completing an object (the final node) was difficult in 80% of cases creating false endings in most cases. * Clicking wrong option in text menu resulted in text disappearing (Fit in box, rather than put on path) No LPEs or other advanced features tested New items: * New rendering order UI: all users used icons to select the requested rendering order quickly. Line cap and corner style uneffected. * Fixed unit text line height was still a bit buggy, but worked ok. Units reverted to pixels which confused users. I've formatted the items for ease of reading. Thoughts on touchscreen, UI design

Hi all, Touchscreen and pen input I like to add to this discussion the use on interactive white boards. I often use Inkscape on white boards in classrooms, which in general works very well when using the pressure pen tool. Text and drawings can be easily made and getting students to interact with it can be quite fun. I do recognise the double click error though as it is very easy to have a touch screen react to a hovering finger as a double click, which for instance breaks a group object when dragging it and then selects a smaller part of it where the finger was. With many manufacturers producing touch screen enabled laptops, tablets and keyslabs, with or without stylus or even pressure pens I would certainly applaud any attempt to have a user definable toolbox added to the interface. Microsoft Surface has proven to be a success WITH stylus and others are copying the format such as Huawei with the Mate. When a keyboard is missing it is quite a hassle to do something simple as an Undo or any of the CTRL+ SHIFT+ ALT+ functions. Having a persistant button on screen for those combinations would make sense for white boards that DO NOT HAVE multitouch and older pen input devices like my old IBM X41 T. I can also imagine a use for the pen input devices like Wacom tablets here. For both pen input and whiteboard I reverted back to Inkscape 0.48 as the new slider widget for values in opacity and blur proved to be too hard to use. Using a mouse it is hard enough to move your finger within a 5 px sensitivity, but for a finger or stylus, that is near impossible. Their precision level isn't the same as a mouse. Now instead of a total redesign of the interface, how much work would it be to just add a toolbox, like the one on the left side? But with user definable keys and a standard set of keys like CTRL, SHIFT, ALT, Undo, Redo and maybe a Number button to type in numeric keypad widget, to touch in a number. The latter might also be useful to select first before selecting one of the slider widgets so instead of accidentally moving the slider from 0.3% blur to 97% blur and waiting quite a bit to click the right spot this time before you get to the function actually desired? Basically it would only be a widget were you can define keyboard mappings to a key, so not really a big deal to make I would think. UI Design Eventually that might lead to a fully user definable tool set, where a user might choose to only have his preferred tools on screen and nothing else on a full screen display for minimalist with one or several collapsible tool boxes, user defined so without the clutter of options you hardly ever use and more room for those nifty LPE's that you might actually want to use in another way that through a drop down menu as option number X. Coreldraw had a similar functionality that allowed you to remove the clutter but made the mistake to not display half the functionality in the first place. Unless you knew what to look for you would never use it, so I would suggest a few default toolsets to be included that give all options. It might even allow users to interchange their favorite tool settings for specific tasks (Cutter, Embroiders, Illustrators, Text layout, Web layout, etc.), creating a whole new class of user interactivity online. I could also imagine creating widgets from widgets, as to set values you use a lot but not exclusively. Now you set the values for a tool once and every next use of the tool will have the same setting. i.e. I make a rect have rounded corners and the next rect I draw inherits the setting. Same with color etc. Same with LPE settings. However, quite often I have a certain type of setting I would like to remember. So far the way to do that is open the document I used it in, find the object and then copy the settings to a new object. Ehm,.. not all that straightforward. Now if you could just create a new tool widget using the current settings of your LPE, Pen tool, Rect or whatever, it would make things a bit simpler for authors. Imagine 5 Pen settings you use a lot 1,2,4,8,16 px width and instead of having to move a slider in the context menu all the time, just adding a widget for that with the correct width, colour and whatever. For sure that shouldn't be in the default UI, but it would be a great productivity tool for those that do cartoon drawings. Imagine 12 settings for a LPE tool you use a lot. 3 types of Lorum Ipsum settings. Basically anything that normally needs lots of mouse clicks and number setting to get used, collected into a single action. Shift+ to edit the setting. CTRL+ to create a child widget. ALT+ to save the new settings. Sounds like bliss to me. Now understandably, you don't want to end up with 200 icons lining your screen either, so having them collapsible into groups would be a great way to solve all the clutter as you won't use them all at the same time either. As suggested by CR, this could just as well be just another screen view option as well, leaving the old interface intact for those that want tons of options in sight and allow for switching when looking for something you do not know the name for to create a new widget. It would certainly encourage experimenting with new options if they are more readily available on screen using a single click rather than having to find them in a list of options. As there are now several people interested in forming a UI design team, it may well be an idea to have them form a workgroup to discuss ideas and form that into a proposal. As a long time user of about any graphics design tool ever produced including Inkscape and 20 years experience designing UI, I would gladly add my two cents to the discussion. Having the core programmers focus on functionality rather than user interaction may be useful as well once we've established a default UI and defined all interaction standards and some possible alternative methods related to theme or platform. The option to theme Inkscape is a recurrent one and though I am not all that convinced by the need for it, having the capability as a result of a UI redesign wouldn't hurt either. It would allow for some widgets to interact in a different way depending on input method for instance. That would allow for the fingerpaint version of the UI as well. Oh, and to avoid blank stares, I've included an example of how I think the UI of Inkscape might evolve. Mind you, this is a very early prototype just to explain the idea, so not much eye candy yet. Fwd: gradient mesh small test results

Hi! I recently discovered the hidden function 'gradient mesh" I know it is still under development but I consider it WOW. :) It is a great tool and I hope it will be included in the new version. I try to find the developing version 0.92, but I found for download only version "Inkscape 0.91+devel_64bit r14690" and in this one I did not found the mesh tool in the tool box... I read that 0.92 is not yet released for test. Maybe I am wrong? Is there any place wher eI can find 0.92 for testing? I make a post in the inkscape forums *Board index General Inkscape Topics Inkscape Ideas , called " Gradient Mesh Tool - first results after testing"* with considerations of my test. So I put here my comments, sustained also by pictures for proving what I mean to say. I have 1 recommandation and 2 "bug comments" (or maybe I don't know how to handle the tool properly...) that I want to make. 1. Recommandation It would be interesting to have the possibility to have a function that a allow the mesh tool to automatically pick up the color from the visible layers (except the working one, of course) for all / selected points. The layer from which the color is selected can be from underneath layers, or all layers, all VISIBLE layers, etc - this function can have more options. I spend a lot of time in "collecting" the color that I need from the underneath layers and this will really help 2. "Bug" number 1. Sometimes when I try to move a handle, the lines disappear and I must use CTRL+Z to get them back (but I cannot move the handles, because ANY handle moved, provoke this issue). To be honnest, I don't know how I reach this situation, it is happening only for one of the objects I use. See Picture Bug1 3. "Bug" number 2. Objects created with this tool (the hidden gradient mesh tool) cannot be moved / flipped, etc. In fact, they can, but they became invisible... See Picture Bug 2 (mouth original and duplicate the mouth then moved it - the square shows whre the duplicate mouth is, but it is invisible). I tried tu "move up" the object, I even hide all other layers - but unfortunately, the object remain invisible. It became invisible after the first action did to it - flip, move, rotate, etc. This is annoying because I wanted to use the first eye asa a base for the second, but now I must re-draw it from scratch... We also have some proposal to improve the UX, and hope we can remix all in a super usable app. About your travel, to me seems very good you take free time to came to the hackfest one day, thanks, anyway, this is only an idea i send to you, the question to the comunity: Whats the opinion about 2-3 people came to hackfest? We can close it?, If anybody think is better meet us on LGM we can search for a convenient place/time to do it. Python extensions

Hello, As you may know, Python 3 release introduced a break of compatibility with Python 2.7. Currently, Inkscape Python extensions (and the inkex.py file) is only compatible with Python 2. It is possible to make the code compatible with both versions, but some external modules (such as six or python-future) are necessary. I think it is necessary to switch to a Python 3 compatible codebase, to attract new extensions developers, and for the ease of maintenance. What is your opinion on this matter ? Raphaël

I try to reopen de discussion for a open font for "Inkscape" text like for "Draw Freely" to include in branding folder and in the website instead the current Calluna Regular, not free. LGM Video : Code review needed for Jabier's excellent rotate objects LPE improvements.

Hi everyone! I need a quick favour... I've worked out the script for the LGM video, and there's one last piece missing from the lineup: I'd absolutely LOVE to add Jabier's massive improvements to the LPEs : 1. "Rotate copies" opendesignstudio.org/inkscape/LPE_rotate_copies_fusioned_paths_jabier_mod.o… 2. "Mirror Symmetry" http://www.opendesignstudio.org/inkscape/lpe_mirror_symmetry_jabier_mod.ogv In these videos I've taken bits of Jabier's Youtube screen casts (with permission of course) to combine them into these quick demos that show what has been changed. The credits at the end are my own doing. Sorry about using the same music, for both. :) Anyway... As you can see, these additions push the LPE to a whole new level of usefulness that is frankly drool-worthy, a massive time-saver, and is an excellent example of the raw graphics power Inkscape is capable of. Since the LGM video is very much about eye-candy for the state of the project, these are fireworks that are simply essential to the lineup. If someone could help us commit these few essential modifications, it would help tremendously! Thanks in advance! -C

Hi everyone! My name is Vatsala Swaroop and I am a final year undergraduate studying Electronics and Communication Engineering in National Institute of Technology Nagpur. I went through the ideas list and "Development Project Management System" really sparked my interest! I have a decent background in Python and have extensively worked on multiple Django projects. I also have a good amount of experience in handling Project Management Systems. I went through the related material provided in the Project description. I have cloned and installed all the requirements required for the project. However, I am getting a particular error when I tried to open the site on my localhost: "TypeError at /en/admin/login/ object.__new__(X): X is not a type object (WSGIRequest)" I explored the traceback and saw that the error stemmed from "debug_design/template.py" in the following lines: 44. obj = super(Themer, cls).__new__(request, *args, **kwargs) Can you please tell me what should I do about it? Also, I saw the two patches rule on the page. Are there any specific patches/tasks that I could solve so as to get a better understanding of the website? Line height with fixed units

Dear Developers, I've committed into r14701 a line height units box. All the functionality seems to work as expected now, but I expect some issues for anything that messes with the units (always do) so please test. I expect you to see one bug which Tav said he'd work on: line height is currently not rendering correctly per line. So a large line and a small line aren't doing quite the right thing together. "object to marker" doesn't work for middle-line marker.

Spin button bug

Has anyone else noticed there's something pretty seriously wrong with the spin buttons in Inkscape? If you click more than a few times on either the up or down arrow the value goes nuts, and keeps going nuts until you switch to a different tool. This bug doesn't seem to affect any other programs (I tried Scribus, and GIMP, and both do not feature this bug). I'm running Inkscape 0.91+devel r (Mar 8 2016). Style Sheet Editor

Hello Tav, Looks very promising and it certainly is a welcome addition to the functionality in any case. On the current design I would like to note that instead of using plus for enabling a style on an object, I would think using a check box with a V would be more logical. I would not use the same symbol twice for different actions as the plus is also used in another context. You show two windows in the concept. Could you just drag and drop a style on an object to give it a class? That would be a welcome addition for the touchscreen user and mouse addicts like me. And vice versa to create a new style from the object. Less mindcraft is often higher productivity. Additional concepts... Would it be an idea to create a style sheet editor that opens a text editor on the right panel that shows the style of the selected object in the external style sheet? Similar to the XML editor, that will read the inline style setting. Another thing that would be helpful is to be able to strip all inline styles and dump them into an external style sheet, possibly removing all the doubles and as such cleaning up the mess. After that, you could create a switch to add incremental style changes either inline or external as to enable people to experiment with it, with a fall back option or several undo levels. I can imagine that people would like to create some basic style sheet, which can be diverted from using inline styles for greater control. Once they are happy with the result they may want to build a variant style sheet or create an additional one so they have a basic style and can add overriding settings in an additional one as you often wouldn't like everything to reside in a single whopper stylesheet. It would avoid users to have to still manually cut the style sheets into little bit using a text editor or the like. Added benefit is the ability to exchange style sheets that way amongst users and the possibility of eventually implementing web animation through them. SMIL is quite dead, but web animation seems to have a better future being supported by all browser implementors of importance, so eventually one hopeful might expect some brave effort on that topic, either from within Inkscape or from the outside with a third party tool that plays well with Inkscape with some level of integration. Pigs can fly if given enough thrust ;-) Possible you might want to colour code what style is being used so one can easily see if there are different styles applied to objects. The colour could be generated from the classname of the style. Not sure how hat might work out with a bunch of stylesheets though, but I would expect that making selectable and displayable columns with coloured boxes at the end of the columns displaying information could be a handy solution to that. It would allow for something similar as the layers widget so you can easily work in a certain stylesheet. Come to think of it, that might be a handy way to work with grouped objects as well in an object manager as well. Colour code them by ID, so one could easily identify them in a list of objects, select a group to work in and block other objects from being selected. Ehm,.. let's stop at that for the moment. The idea to use item order to visualize paint order is nice, but it's too hard to figure out what stroke and fill are when items are moving around (especially given the small size), so the intended effect is not achieved and it actually gets harder to figure out the paint order.
