One important aspect of the site that we think needs work is the information architecture. We propose reducing the main navigation menu to: - News - Download - Documentation - Resources - Gallery - Community - Development I would like to open a discussion about people's thoughts on this, and perhaps get into some specifics regarding what pages/sections would need to be consolidated, rethought, or perhaps eliminated in order to do this. Hi, For a reason I may not yet announce I need our logo in EPS file format. Unfortunately Inkscape still has no idea how to flatten transparencies when saving to PS/EPS. Before I go tweaking the SVG to get rid of them, I'd like to find out if somebody did this job before, so that some time could be spared. Bug reports in portuguese

The brazilian inkscape community is very active. But lots of people are not familiar with english. So there seems to be a need for a community effort to proxy their bug reports and feature requests into our official bugtracker (by translating them into english). I am not sure whether launchpad has a feature to enable that. But I would like to install a launchpad server to host bug reports in portuguese and I'd like to know whether there is some feature that would help us keep some kind of relation between equivalent bugs in both systems so that we can minimize the human effort to keep both systems fairly synchronized. I'd like to have bug status, tags, metadata, etc.. all shared and synchronized so that the only human effort would be the actual translation of user comments. But if we dont have such features, I still would like to try to setup the best system we can in order to allow greater user participation. Felipe "Juca" Sanches

Accessing Inkscape document data as it is generated

Hello all, Haven't posted a message here in a long time -- hope things are going well! I've received a message asking about the best way to access Inkscape's document data as it's changed. His project involves serving document data from Inkscape to locally-running programs, for which he plans to use DBus. The questioner prefers to remain anonymous for now. My initial response recommended implementing Inkscape::UndoStackObserver, much as Inkboard did, as it's an easy way to obtain a stream of transactions on the document. However, questioner's concern with this approach was that listening for changes on the undo stack wouldn't capture intermediate states of actions, e.g. motion along a path. He brought up another possibility, which was to send changes in batches at short intervals (using, say, Inkscape::XML::NodeObserver). I'm no longer familiar enough with the Inkscape codebase to give an opinion on how well this would work, nor do I know if there's been any changes in the past few years that would make this sort of thing easier. Can anyone help out? I can offer clarifications as necessary. Thanks, - David

May I ask why EPS? Even the position of its creator is to move forward to PDF. I usually find myself trying to import/export proprietary formats but if I send the "wrong" format to my providers they ask me to export it again in their preferred format. I wonder why we have to worry about this and not them, since we can do PDF or even SVG (which doesn't seem to be very well supported by some commercial and people can't complain, by the way). I know saying this won't solve anything and it's not very helpful, just my two cents.

.po problem when compiling on Win 32

When I try to compile the source files on a Win32 platform, I get a raft of errors saying that 'keyword msgctxt not found' in file am.po. Each file I delete leads the error onto the next po file until I delete all the po files, the compilation then works properly. This is not a great issue for me as I don't need the translations but it is bound to be a problem for some others. Private strings: use of const

A few months ago we had a thread about static code analysis with coverity. However, I have not heard anything from it anymore. So I just installed myself another static code analysis software packet, cppcheck. I played with it a bit and stumbled upon several notifications of functions that could be const. However what should be const? The pointer, the string to which the pointer points to or both? Aparently the pointer should be const, no? (e.g. to ensure that the string can not be deleted in some buggy code that calls get_help, leaving the pointer_help in the class pointing to some odd data chunk?) This would result in: gchar * const get_help (void) { return _help; } Or is there something that I am missing? My wife has a Genius Pensketch tablet that uses the wizardpen driver in gnu/linux. The driver is provided by the community and have some limitations, like being unable to work with a mouse at the same time (if you use the tablet you lose the ability to use mouse on the work area until you change the stylius from screen to de-activated). If that selector is removed it will render inkscape unusable for people with those tablets who want to use the mouse as well. And there are lots of cheap tablets that only run in linux with that driver. Wacom tablets (and those that use the wacom drivers) don't have that problem and you can safely leave everything set to screen.

Hi, While we are waiting for Development Seed guys to start working on the new website, it'd be nice to fix some things on the existing one. One thing that IMO needs fixing is the RSS feed generator. Currently it just compiles all the text it can find into one paragraph, which isn't nice, and loses all HTML links, which is even worse. Could anybody with PHP-Fu please fix that? Adjusting the colors to the destination gamut seems more acceptable than just de-activating filters since most of the popular CMYK profiles fall pretty much inside the sRGB gamut. The out-of-sRGB-gamut colors can be adjusted using the relative colorimetric intent (probably it would be a good idea to nag the user with a warning when this happens) but in my oppinion as user that's completely acceptable. I agree that allowing untagged CMYK would be a bad idea. Thanks to poor design decisions in popular software packages, users tend to think that the important thing is to have CMYK and color profiles remain like something rather obscure that it shouldn't be touched (i know because I was one of those clueless designers ranting for CMYK knowing nothing about color management :-p) Thanks to being unable to work with early binding with Inkscape and GIMP I got used to late binding and once I saw the benefits I realized that it's better. I finally understood that when designers (like me) ask for CMYK they're actually asking for a way to use black as a spot pass. Pantone colors can be used with both early and late binding. Most of the designers I know use the formula books -which have Lab color values- in an early binding workflow, thinking that they will get the "right" CMYK values and they don't realize that the colors are being mapped to the generic CMYK profile they're using. So, truth to be said, maybe it's better to adopt a late binding worflow with the ability to "force" CMYK values (for blacks/grays or for specific CMYK combinations) rather than worrying too much about how to deal with CMYK and filters and all. >From my user p.o.v. everything seems pretty much ready for a print workflow. We just need to make it more obvious in the UI, and it looks like something that can be achieved improving the fill+stroke dialog and the auto-palette a little. Just my 2 cents.

Input Device UI

Hey all, I've just installed inkscape 0.48 from the nightly build (there is still no stable ppa) since 0.47 started crashing every time I pressed the stroke/fill dialog. Now my presure sensitivity has gone and I was looking at the new dialog for input devices... I can't make heads nor tales of it. What is it supposed to be letting me do? What's the difference between the configuration (which has a single checkbox and that's it) and the hardware tab? What is linking for? If the use pressure sensitivity checkbox is checked, then why doesn't it work? Is there anything else? If the testing area is for trying out all the inputs, why is it so confusing? All those little boxes? Where would pressure be shown? Why is the box so small, even when there is nothing else in that side pannel? It's hard to see everything. I did recognise that the old input ui needed fixing, but I'm very unsure about this ui. I know what I'm doing and I can't figure it out. Martin,

feComponentTransfer resource management

Hi, I'm currently trying to implement customizable filters (try Filters>Experimental) with Ivan Louette, and found (thanks to ~suv) a small bug in the code of the feComponentTransfer primitive (see https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/638943). To summarize, when the effect preview is updated (sometimes after many changes) the following error shows in the console: gboolean sp_document_add_resource(SPDocument*, const gchar*, SPObject*): assertion `!g_slist_find(rlist, object)' failed sp_document_add_resource is called from componenttransfer.cpp, line 103, preceded by the comment: //do we need this? When this call is commented out, the error message doesn't show, but I'm not sure it's safe to remove it. It is also used in some other filters (pointlight.cpp, distantlight.cpp, spotlight.cpp and componenttransfer-funcnode.cpp) always with the same kind of comment (or // is this necessary?), but in these cases, the resources are released differently (compare sp_fedistantlight_release with sp_feComponentTransfer_release). Two essentials for publishing users.

Inkscape needs two more features for publishing. First, the CMYK color model needs to be a real option. ImageMagick will convert an svg file to CMYK but that means going from vector to bitmap. Second, there should be an option for PDF output in PDF X/1-a format to satisfy the largest POD printer, Lightning Source Inc. (LSI). Currently my only path is to import all or part of a cover image into Scribus 1.5.0 (development version) and save it from there. Hi, The project of the students from Ecole Centrale Lyon has ended in June. Their report (written in english) is available on my page of the Inkscape Wiki <http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/User:Steren>. The code is in a dedicated Inkscape branch<https://code.launchpad.net/~centralelyon2010/inkscape/imagelinks2> on Launchpad. You will find: - a use of relative links by default - a smart relinking tool for broken images - a first step in the image properties redesign. The first part of this page<http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Image_properties_dialog_enhancements> details what has been done and is dedicated to bug tracking for this branch. (Can we use launchpad bug tracking for a branch? If so, we should do it). You are welcomed to test it and report errors, keep in mind that it is non-finished work. Once again, I think it was a great experience for the students to work on a project such as Inkscape. I hope they will see their effort being integrated into trunk one day, the same we were pleased to see the spray tool or the enhanced LPEs. The W3C allow the use of IRI, but this change may interfere with Inkscape. I guess it shouldn't be too hard to transform the IRI into a URI. What do you think ? Any feedback is welcomed. If the proposed new standard were to include the CMYK color model as an alternate to RGB , and Inkscape were modified to include it, then the potential for using Inkscape in publishing work would be expanded. I have always thought that open source graphics software need well known and appreciated artists to use it end talk about it. Thus I sent a message to Nina Paley because I was so fascinated by "Sita" and I am interested to draw the attention of artists to Inkscape and svg filters. And one hour and an half later she replied the following message ! Automatic mention of shortcuts in tooltips

I've just added code to automatically add the shortcut key to tooltips of verbs. If you find any problems with tooltips (it lists something strange, a tooltip doesn't show anymore, the shortcut is listed double, whatever) you know where to look first. The main change is that the shortcut is now made part of the tooltip as reported by the verb and that we now use a gtk function to derive the shortcut label instead of our own function (the result seems to be the same). I've tried to check for situations where this would lead to double or unwanted listing of the shortcut, but so far it seems fine.

Integrating Diffusion Curves

I'm working on Diffusion Curves (for master thesis) and will try to get them in Inkscape in the foreseeable future (this calender year hopefully). As I'm slowly getting more grip on the technical side of things (which is what my thesis will be about) I'd love some input (and help) on UI issues. For those who haven't heard about them yet, they're basically a new and very(!) flexible way of specifying color transitions. You just assign colors to curves and let the program fill in the intermediate space using diffusion. This tends to create visually pleasing, smooth, transitions while allowing for a very complex geometry with minimal effort. More information (especially see the references at the bottom for examples): http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Diffusion_Curves My current thinking is that it would probably be best to treat diffusion curves as a paint server, allowing people to assign color to nodes (that either coincide with existing nodes or are positioned somewhere on the path). The colors would be linearly interpolated along the path. A scheme like this would fit in well with the idea of expanding the functionality of the gradient tool and having a general color picker. Unfortunately this would sort of limit the ability to blur boundaries to the point that it might not make any sense. But then again, maybe it's a mistake to try and integrate two separate concepts (blur and color transitions), even in the original paper these are treated quite separately (the blur values are diffused separately and then a spatially varying blur is applied). Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful. Also, would it make sense to apply diffusion curves to strokes? If so, how would that work?

SVG Open 2010 Report

SVG Open 2010 was held in Paris, and since I live nearby I offered to give a talk about Inkscape. I would like to thank the organizers for waving the conference fee and even providing a ticket for the conference dinner aboard a boat on the Seine. There were quite a few interesting talks and panels and I learned quite a bit. My overall impression can be summed up easily: SVG has finally arrived. This conclusion was easy to make after talking to the many representatives of the major web browsers, including those from Microsoft who were there in numbers. In case anybody missed the news, IE9 will include comprehensive support for SVG, only missing the filters, SMIL, and SVG fonts modules. Filters will almost certainly appear in IE10; SMIL and fonts might too depending on demand. In case anybody wants to know, it took about 15 developers 15 months to implement SVG support in IE. A good fraction of the discussion was on how SVG fits into HTML5. HTML5 is not a finished standard and there are still pieces to work out. Microsoft is implementing what it can now and has an important message for users: Download and test the IE9 previews and betas. Complain about any behavior you find wrong or undesirable. You have about three months before IE9 gets locked down. It will be hard to change behavior after that as IE9 is expected to be around for 10 years and future versions of IE will maintain backwards compatibility. I'm afraid my notes are quite poor so I will just make a list of some random observations: * HTML5 will be everywhere soon. Firefox 4 and IE9 already contains HTML5 parsers, Webkit (Chrome and Safari) and Opera will have them soon (you can use SVG in XHTML right now). All the browsers support some HTML5 features. * There is a huge desire to have CSS3 apply the same way to HTML as to SVG. This includes things like sharing filters. * SVG is very popular in mapping circles (and not just in OpenStreetMap). * Vector effects are very interesting for maps, especially the ability to share partial paths between objects and for creating complex paths for roads, et cetera. * Most TV set-top boxes use SVG for their displays. * Look for cool SVG demos at SVG-Wow.org. A better LaTeX equation renderer

Hello, I was annoyed that the LaTeX equation insert mechanism didn't provide a way to control the size of the equation. This makes it needlessly difficult to match the size of the text in the body of a LaTeX document. So I modified that extension. Attached is a revised version that: (a) Allows scaling by a specified factor; (b) Allows typesetting non-equations; (c) Allows customizing the preamble to the LaTeX document; (d) Properly scales the input using the 'viewBox' attribute, rather than relying on the structure of the document; and (e) Uses pdf2svg ( http://www.cityinthesky.co.uk/pdf2svg.html ) rather than pstoedit. On point (e), pdf2svg seemed more reliable to me, though YMMV. I can easily switch it back to pstoedit, although it's harder to control just where the resulting formula ends up. For point (c), I was annoyed by the very limited UI options: it seems hard to either embed newlines in the preamble or give a sufficiently large input area. Is there any hope of fixing this? I could, I guess, have different input boxes for different lines, but that's really horrendously clunky. Any comments are welcome. Hi, The media type registration (MIME) for SVG: image/svg+xml is finally being registered. As part of this registration, information on how SVG content is tagged by clipboards is required. For example, the Windows Clipboard Name is "SVG Image". Can someone tell me how Inkscape tags SVG content on the clipboard for Windows, MacOS, and Linux? Increasing performance through OpenCL

Hi all, Previously I was discussing on lib2geom the concept of applying OpenCL based refactoring on the code(lib2geom initially). Then on suggestions of some developers I have moved from lib2geom to inskcape on an overall to increase the performance of inskcape in any possible manner. Some earlier suggestions included, Parallelizing the rendering of cairo based implementation. I would love to move forward in the area, but I will be needing some push(in terms of startup) to get started. Like the first and foremost question that lies ahead of me as a wall is, "What is the area of the code that is possible to be parallelized and how much can it affect the performance??" Second question is, What approach should be taken to parallelize the stuff?? Most serial algorithms when implemented in parallel totally change their appearance. So will that be OK or not?? There are other hurdles but it would be better to first proceed forwards with snacks and then go the main feast. comma bug

Hi, looks like a bug to me but I'd like to get some comments before reporting. When I add a drop shadow in my de locale environment on XP even after setting inkscape up to use en the stdDeviation and colorMatrix alpha values are set with comma instead of dot. Text Dialog Not Grabbing Font, Style, Size

This has been a recurring problem for us since about vers .45: select a block of text, click on the font dialog toolbar (or choose in menu) - when the dialog appears, font is blank, size is blank, style defaults to normal. edit the text and click apply and get an unexpected font in return. clicking on it into rotation mode sometimes helps pop up with font info or rapid clicking to get it into edit mode sometimes helps - but this is too cumbersome are we missing something or does this need work ?

Cloned Tiles interface rework proposal

Congratulations on another terrific release! I hope you’re all taking a well-deserved break. In the meantime, I wanted to discuss whether it’s possible to rework the Tiled Clones interface, mainly to address the following issues: - Location: Tiled Clones is too powerful a tool to be hidden in Edit. Proposal: move Tiled Clones to Object, and have it open a dialogue like Fill, Align etc rather than a floating box (Ctrl + Shift + C). - The interface: the current interface is very powerful, but it feels like staring down a math/geometry class. :P Separating Tiles and Rotate and adding a preview area using simple examples would be nice. - “How do I make it rotate around This point?” Have the option to select an on-screen guideline, like how it works with filters and LPEs. For rotations, you select an angled line. Now, I’m assuming that most uses of tiled clones would fall into a few major categories: - Tiles: including simple symmetry and various tiles options. - Radial Clone: flowers, laces, round borders, clocks, gears... - Objects Along Path: Like Pattern Upon Path, except for objects. Example: a line of trees bordering a curving river and fading into the background. Hey Inkscapers, Firstly, congratulations and thank you all so much for Inkscape 0.48 I was just looking at this page here: http://www.inkscape.org/download/?lang=en And I have to say I'm fairly disappointed that Inkscape as a project caters so poorly to educating Free Desktop users about how to get Inkscape for their platform. It's not just that there isn't a download for Ubuntu or Fedora directly, but because it doesn't even have an apt link or a ppa for where you can get the latest Inkscape release. This causes major headaches for us trying to support Ubuntu: like Mozilla who recommend Ubuntu users upgrade their version of Ubuntu by downloading tar-balls, it's annoying, confusing for users and a it's maintaining the myth that FOSS is for geeks. If you'd like some help with the preparation of the page and publishing for various platforms, I'd be very happy to lend a hand. Best Regards, Martin Owens

Build against external libcroco?

A while ago, someone asked at the Debian bugtracker about this: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=427946 At the time, it seems that a patched version of libcroco-0.6 was included in the source tree of inkscape-0.45, and that Inkscape could not be built with the upstream version of libcroco. Since then, a lot of changes have been made in Inkscape (including the removal of src/libcroco/README) and there is a new upstream version (0.6.2) of libcroco. Please could someone update us on the situation? Specifically: * Which version of libcroco is included with Inkscape 0.47/0.48? * Have any changes been made to the bundled library? * Can Inkscape be built successfully using a clean external libcroco? I have tried the .gz download, the .bz2 download, and even the bazaar version. 0.47 configures and compiles with no problem. Dear Inkscape Developer, i work with laserengravingmachine at my job, but at home i use inkscape to draw anything. I have try with my boss to use inkscape for this laser. The surfaceraster is going right but the cut isn`t going. I hope we a any others can use inkscape in future for this laser. This could inkscape more populare and alternative for many laserusers. Now i can use Corel draw and adobe photoshop for this laser. The problem is only the cut-line this could a line how in corel a hairline or 0,01 thickness i think the laser can`t understand the vectorline from inkscape. The faces understand it. The lasers work´s with 1200dpi 600dpi or 400dpi how any printers. Export dialog, relative path patch

Hi, I've written some codethat makes the export dialog leave out the directory when exporting a drawing or an object, defaulting to just the png filename (patch attached). This is for two reasons: 1) Since the export path defaults to the SVG directory anyway, this will a) not change anyone's workflow, but b) will reduce work when you inevitably move your files around. If relative paths are an option, is there a good reason why they are not the default option? I suppose it's conceivable that people always export all pngs to a certain fixed folder that is nothing to do with the SVG directory, but then you have to type that in anyway, so this doesn't harm that use case at all. 2) I didn't even know that relative paths worked until about a week ago*, so I have to assume that at least some others don't know about it either. This patch helps to advertise to users that it is even possible, and saves them some work! If you accept this code, please look at it very carefully, I am just a novice at these things. Craig * I have manually updated the export path in this dialog when my files need to be moved (at least once per file, depending on that jobs status, which seems to be unavoidable in my workflow), I dont even want to think how many hours I've spent doing this unnecessarily.

Extension interface request

Hi, I'd like to make a couple of requests for features (or perhaps explanations/pointers to why they can't be included). 1) It would be really cool to have a proper directory selection (or popup directory chooser) as an option on the inkex dialog. This way the user doesn't have to memorise their favourite directories etc., they can browse to them, or use favourites, etc. 2) Someone on #inkscape mentioned that the filename/directory information was excluded from the SVG for security reasons, but this class of information is still freely included in the form of export hints. It's inconsistent for one, and inconvenient for another. I've just been developing an extension where it would have been much nicer to export the necessary files to the same directory by default. A possible workaround if 1) is ever implemented, would be to optionally default the directory chooser to the drawing's working directory, thereby bypassing the security problem. 3) Possibly related to 2. Whenever I export a document from inkscape, then move the file (I have a bunch of folders/hierarchies and the files move depending on various states), if I then need to export again, I have to tell it where to export to, and it's a bit of a pain, it would be nice for an option to always export to the working directory. Hello, the following problem i have on AMD dual core 3000+ with windows7: since the installing of inkscape v.48 the "incscape-einstellungen" (in german) or shift+contrl+p leads to a complete crash. reinstalling on v.47 doesn't fix the problem. may you can follow the example an find the reason... greatings lars

I confirm that I've installed the dev libs（The latest version）. The file gtkmm-2.4.pc exist at all in C:\devlibs\lib\pkgconfig\ . LPE PowerStroke

Hi all, Because my GSoC student had no progress at the midterm evaluation deadline, I decided to fail him for GSoC. But since I was screaming so loud at LGM that this summer we would have a PowerStroke LPE, I couldn't escape coding it myself. Too bad, I should have applied for GSoC as a student myself... For those interested: I think the PowerStroke LPE is ready for some playing and testing. You have to build Inkscape 0.48+devel with experimental LPEs enabled. To see clearly what happens, you have to apply a stroke to the path, and no fill. It just happens that the vast majority of people want to run at the mention of "maths." :P You might as well replace everything with transformation matrices... If you want to reason in maths terms, in my proposal: - The Tiles tab corresponds to the current "x,y" coordinate approach - The Radial tab corresponds to a "radius, angle" coordinate approach What prompted me to this suggestion is that recently, I wanted to design a simple gear (but still a bit more complicated than what the LPE offers). I ended up doing the rotation manually because it was faster than opening a tutorial to find out what in the world rows and columns were supposed to do for rotations. I just wanted to duplicate the pattern exactly 6 times in a rotation. A lot of people would want to do that for simple designs such as flowers, clocks, round patterns etc., and they probably don't want to need a maths degree for something that basic. Good point about other options missing in the Cloned Tiles interface though. So right now, here's a recap on what me may find missing with the current interface: 1. Location: Move to Objects, add a shortcut, open a docker? 2. On-screen guideline. The default will be as currently, but if you select the object and either a straight line or a line with two segments, I'd like a drop-down to appear allowing you to choose it as the guideline for the transformations, so there's no need to resort to tricks to add spacing to tiling, to choose a centre of rotation, etc. 3. The ability to switch between % and absolute values. 4. Add skew. 5. An Easy, intuitive way to do radial clones. At the very least, add a button in the Rotation tab for "Rotate around centre", and maybe add a "Divide sphere by n" times so that people don't have to calculate the exact angle. Of course, people would want the ability to choose what that centre is, which is where the guideline comes in. An alternative approach would be to add a Radial Align option in the Align Tab. It'd rotate the clones several times around the centre of rotation. Anything else? I do believe that this is an area where an improvement in just the interface will provide very big returns to users.

Hello, all, My name's Mike, and I have been an avid Inkscape user for several years. For a year as a web designed I used Inkscape almost exclusively despite the fact that my station was equipped with Adobe Illustrator. I also love and support open source projects, so I figured the two fit. I'll spare the rest of my intro and get to the point. Recently Pi Mu Epsilon, a national mathematics honor society of which I am a member, announced a seal redesign contest to commemorate their centennial in 2014. Each chapter in the country could submit a design. This last month in Pittsburgh, at Mathfest, the four national semifinalists were unveiled, and mine, created entirely using Inkscape, was one of them. I have it attached as an SVGZ file. I wanted to share and offer it as a possible showcase addition. You will notice that I left many of my alternative design elements present in the file, but if you export the page at 300dpi you will see what I submitted to the contest. Thanks very much, Mike

Hi all, Inkscape's doc stuff (mainly tutorials po files) has just moved from the old Sourceforge svn to Launchpad. The project url is: https://launchpad.net/inkscape-docs. Feel free to use it if you need to report a bug or request (you can still use the translators list, of course!) The maintainer and driver of this project is the Inkscape Administrators group, and the trunk owner is the Inkscape Developers group. In order to get a local checkout of the files, please use the following command: # bzr checkout lp:inkscape-docs You can create a local branch instead, but I suggest that you use a checkout so that using it is as easy as is was with svn. Please refer to the wiki (http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Working_with_Bazaar) if you need some details about bazaar (just replace lp:inkscape with lp:inkscape-docs). Ask the guy who gave you the file to save it in an older version that Uniconvertor can manage or even better, in a format better suited for exchange (SVG or at least PDF). That's probably the same they would ask you if you send them a Corel Draw X5 file and they would have Corel X4. And, as a personal remark, I think it's more reasonable to ask closed source software to have good support of files that have open specifications than expecting free software to support closed source formats. ;-)

As far as I can remember, that problem was caused by a bug in the creation of thumbnails. If it's that, you can temporarily fix it by deleting the .thumbnails folder and de-activating thumbnail generation from nautilus preferences. Nautilus is pretty clumsy when it comes to thumbnail creation. Even in newer versions you'll find some problems with that (for instance, browsing a folder with SVG documents with several embedded images - the new inkscape's default - will freeze nautilus until thumbnails are ready, and file limits specified in the preferences don't seem to apply).

Congrats for Inkscape 0.48! I've tested the new features and the old ones, specially, searching for bugs. Great work. But bugs like this are still alive: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/365458 And this https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/486404 I know there's more serious bugs to solve, but these little glitches (that few cares about, I presume) are very bad for the user experience. It's like a costumer entering a new and shiny shop of broken/scratched products that a sharp eye customer won't buy, so he never returns. Hello everybody, probabely there are lots of thoughts on this, so I'd be grateful for some hints: I do have some very special wishes on inkscape developement: # Improving the Mac OS X integration # implement a routine which counts the number of objects surrounded by another object: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/621627 Esp. the first has hardly moved forward during the last year, since I've started watching it. Is there a way of funding a special developement, which obviously does not attract a lot of attention? Inkscape is free - alternatively I'd to pay 1000s of Euros for a "professional" product - with all its disacvantages. So I'd be happy to donate a number of Euros - and probabely some other people as well - to pay somebody to get special work done, which would not be done otherwise. Is there a mechanism for that? - Could there be one? - Maybe some young person would be interested to earn a small sum, learn and get experienced - and get some work done within a professional environment? - Or is that idea completely against the spirit of open source? Problem with Nautilus

Hi there, I am experiencing some troubles at opening .svg files. I was working with Inkscape for a month, and I found it pretty nice. The problems start yesterday. I was working on a .svg project and saved it to my desktop. Later I attempt to open it by cliking on the icon. The File Manager crashed out and froze my desktop. I worked for a while trying to fix the problem. Finally I opted for format the HD and start from zero. Again, today I experienced the same problem. I searched on internet and I found other people with the same problem, but without answers. Do you can give me a clue about how to solve this? Thaks Lucas

Hey all, I just wanted to let everyone know that it appears that we have the core packages necessary for release. I have one major task left (screenshots), which I just need to refine text for. If people want to do a final pass on the release notes and pr text, it's more than welcome. I'm taking the day/night off from Inkscape stuff, but will wrap up tomorrow for an announcement on Monday. For those who might be wondering, weekday releases seem to get more coverage than weekend releases. It really seems like people hit up slashdot, reddit, digg, etc. more during the workweek rather than the weekend. Cheers, Josh

Gradient smoothness, dithering

Hi, I am currently doing a wallpaper in Inkscape, and I have noticed a strange thing about gradients : we can see the steps. Some other guys have also noticed this problem : http://inkscape-forum.andreas-s.net/topic/109624 (may 2007) The rendering is exactly the same in inkscape, png export and Firefox (and Chromium). I have tested in Safari (Mac), and it is fine (not 100% sure : fast test). Creating the same gradient with GIMP is fine : playing with brightness and contrast helps (contrast to ~110 and adjust brightness). See this picture : http://xinfe.free.fr/gradient.png After further investigation, I found out that when disabling the 'Dither' option, GIMP's result is exactly the same as Inkscape. So, is it possible to implement this feature for *.png exports (opt-in/out) ? problems when opening file from 0.47 in 0.48

Hi all, I'm testing the 0.48 version and I've noticed that when opening an svg file created in version 0.47 in 0.48, some elements (arrows, in this specific case) that I had grouped with a main figure with other elements (rectangles, circles, etc..), now the arrows appears far away from the main figure in the canvas. GSOC spatial indexes

Hi everyone I worked on the spatial indexes GSOc project, and made progress but unfortunately the last month has been quite problematic, due to external issues (nothing to do with GSOC or programing). So, I won't be able to deliver the project completed in time. However, I will continue the work (after a small break). I want it to be available for the 0.49 release and I hope that I'll have results by mid to end September. I'll soon upload the work I've done so far. Bug #569238 “[dbus] get_desktop_new returns nothing”

a) Has anyone using the dbus API since it was merged with trunk noticed a regression with "desktop_new"? According to bug #569238 [1] "desktop_new no longer returns nil, it now times out. light testing with rectangle crashes inkscape (...)" (reported with current trunk built on fedora 13, dbusapi enabled) b) Related to the dbus API docs - would it be possible to make the documentation available on the Inkscape Wiki? Not every platform has the tools installed to build it using 'dbus/builddocs.sh' (e.g. on osx the list of (otherwise unneeded) dependencies in order to install 'xmlto' via MacPorts is huge) - yet users might be interested to read more about it. ~suv [1] https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/569238

During the last year several people asked on #inkscape (irc) about the git repository <git://git.inkscape.org/projects/inkscape.git> and its current state (the git-daemon seems to be down, the archive a mirror of an old SVN revision from sf.net). Are there plans to revive this repository or shouldn't it be taken off-line to avoid confusion? ~suv

UniConvertor update for 0.48 on Windows

Hello After some cowboy patching and hacking MinGW includes I managed to update UniConvertor to version 1.1.5 in the Windows devlibs (r18). The attached fix is required for the 0.48 branch in order to work properly with the updated UniConvertor; I have committed it to trunk already. Inkscape 0.48 status

Hey All, 0.48 is wrapped up now code-wise... we got that Save As dialog issue on win32 fixed, uniconvertor on win32 is up to date, we also got 3 last minute Connector Tool crash fixes. I've requested that Ted cut the tarball, so once we have that the packagers can begin their work. I will only be available through next Sunday (22nd) to work on the release due to the upcoming surgery, and from the sound of things, probably won't be back anytime soon. Well, it seems you're looking more at the top panels while some of us are more focused on other parts. :) I didn't pay attention to the top panel until you mentioned it. Every mock-up will likely have its good parts and bad parts. Here's what I do like in these mock-ups: 1. The layer panel I like the arrangement, it makes efficient use of space but gives you information about a layer at just a glance. It just needs a slider to pop up besides the numerical value when clicked to adjust opacity more easily. I think the view button could be moved to the far left though to avoid accidentally clicking on the lock button. 2. Parts of the fill and stroke panel Of course, options will have to be restored, but there are elements I do think are interesting: a. The stroke/fill button I suppose when you click on the hollow square, the hollow square is brought to the forefont and you're basically editing your stroke color now, and vice-versa? I think this kind of preview is kind of neat. Of course, the options he removed will have to be brought back in. b. I like the more compact view for caps and markers, though some options are missing now. I wouldn't mind seeing something like this at the bottom: http://j.imagehost.org/view/0548/stroke For those who absolutely Need the names, the name could always pop up when you hover over it. I'm not so sure about the other proposed changes, but I did find these to be nice ideas. Right now I avoid using the fill and stroke panel whenever I can because it's a pain to navigate (too many tabs), something more compact may be nicer.

Crashes

Hey All, It seems like a decent number of tweets and complaints I've seen around the community (understandably) are about inkscape crashing. Doing basic searches for bugs tagged w/ crash gives the following info: All statuses is over 200 bugs and Confirmed or In Progress have 84. 84 crash bugs that can be reproduced seems unreasonably high for something intended for production work and code-wise there's a chance that some are caused by shared underlying issues. 3D Box and 0.49

Hello 3D Box is the main thing that prevents us from fixing the coordinate system bug. (The second thing are guides, but they're much easier to fix.) The reason is that it has a design fault - it stores perspectives and faces in desktop coordinates. A simple Y inversion does not fix the problem, because some code (e.g. default face coloring) is dependent on the chirality of the 3D coordinate system, and flipping the Y axis inverts the chirality. There's also a slew of other bugs related to 3D box in our bug tracker. What do we do with it in 0.49? I would really like to see the coordinate system bug fixed in 0.49, even if it means rewriting the 3D box from scratch, or even disabling it. Fancy features aren't very useful if we don't get the basics right. The issue of supporting legacy documents with 3D boxes is separate and I think it can be done if the 3D box gets rewritten first. We would just need to fix the document at load time. Initially I wanted to do this by direct XML manipulation before creating the SP tree, but now I see this has limitations - compatibility code at SP level is probably a better idea. Hi everybody, as I upgraded my system to Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard", I tried a new build of inkscape for native Mac OS X - called "aqua". Building didnt cause a lot of trouble, daring fellows can get it here: http:// verkehrsplanung.com/Inkscape-r9689-10.5+-PPC.dmg Attn.: It ist PPC only - dont waste your time, if you have an Intel machine. I couldnt do a lot of testing - but it looks as if it works quite nicely, but most of the well-known aqua bugs are maintained. To my feeling, it should not be so much work to get a really useable inkscape aqua - and I assume that many mac people would be happy with it. Sorry - I cannot do any coding - but will be happy to build and test everything. How to manage hundreds of bugs found by static analysis of Inkscape source?

I've used Coverity's static source code analysis tools to identify hundreds of bugs in Inkscape source. I'd like some guidance on the best way to contribute bug report details and proposed fixes to Inkscape. I'm a relatively new Coverity employee getting up to speed with our static analysis tools for identifying defects. Inkscape was recommended as an open source project with C/C++ source that I could use to satisfy my educational needs while contributing to an open source project. I want to contribute code fixes along with bug details. I suggest a first pass to report as many bugs as I can to the Inkscape Bug Tracker, followed by a second pass to add suggested fixes. Then Inkscape developers with commit privileges can review my code fix suggestions and apply the fixes as they see fit. Once the first pass is done and bug details are visible to the community, anyone else is welcome to contribute fixes also. What process should we follow to make the best use of everyone's efforts by avoiding several people working on the same bug? What I'm requesting at this point is a discussion about my suggestions, and some decisions about how best to proceed. As an example, here's one defect found by Coverity analysis, with my proposed code fix. Hallo! Ich verwende Inkscape 0.47. Bei Inkscape 0.47 habe ich Probleme mit Linien. Sobald ich eine Linie dupliziere und mit der Maus/Pfeiltasten positionieren möchte, springt die Linie zu einer beliebigen XY Position auf dem Zeichenfenster. Es ist hierauf nicht mehr möglich, diese zu positionieren, auch bei Neustart von Inkscape ist das Problem vorhanden. Hat jemand dasselbe Probleme bzw. einen Lösungsvorschlag? Danke, Christoph

New feature: Exchange position of selected objects

Hi all, The patch provided in Bug #171944 "Exchange position of selected objects" (https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/171944) by Roland Meub is now in the trunk (committed revision 9681). It adds three buttons in the Align and Distribute dialog (rearrange group) that exchange the selected objects position: 1. according to the selection order, 2. according to the stacking order, and 3. clockwise. Hello, I downloaded the source code some time ago, and after some time reading, I still don't understand how it works from a general POV. Is a ".txt" with some paragraphs ( the last date of update from which is unknown i think) enough for such a large software? Wouldn't be better if some better explanation about it's structure, more than "there are two trees somewhere, one of them agnostic", was written, so more people could get into developing? Or is it just me, that i'm so noob, because the program is quite trivial? Thanks
