How to create group object

Hi all, it may seem to be a stupid question, but I can't find answer anywhere... How can I get SPItem from Inkscape::XML::Node? (or create group object and get xml node from that - I need both) I'm hacking on automatically grouping objects when setting clip/mask (as mentioned in another thread) and I need to create new group, so mask can be applied to the group instead of selected objects. Currently, I know how to create the svg:g XML element, move other objects into it and where to pass reference to the group to do what I want, but it needs to be a reference to SPItem and not Inkcape::XML::Node. Is there any documentation for object tree and xml tree and how do they interact? Thanks. Best regards, Martin Sucha

Path rendering buggy?

I looked into bug #514649 and it looks like Inkscape has some problems rendering the complicated paths in the problem image. Could someone with a bit more knowledge of the path rendering internals have a look at it?

[PATCH/RFC] New feature: Enclose objects in groups when applying mask

Hi all, I prefer adding objects into a group before applying a mask, because it allows me to manipulate masked content easily without unsetting mask. But I often forget to group objects before I apply a clip/mask. So I decided to take a look at inkscape source code and made this little feature that does it automatically for me. It needs one more thing to work properly though - when automatically enclosing each object in a group it should mark that group as made by that feature so when unsetting mask it ungroups only those automatically added groups. So where should be stored some info about whether this group should be automatically removed? There are two possibilities that I think of: either inkscape:groupmode attribute or custom attribute for this purpose Also, is it sufficient to manipulate those attributes directly or is there any class that takes responsibility for this? At least there is some code managing inkscape:groupmode attribute, right? I've added a new checkbox in Inkscape Preferences/Clippaths and masks called "Enclose masked objects in groups" to activate this feature (disabled by default to be consistent with previous behavior), so don't forget to check it before testing ;) As I'm not very familar with C++ or Inkscape source code I hope I've not introduced any memory leaks or crashes. Could somebody bring me up-to-date on the state of the new Dbus interactive stuff in Inkscape? I remember seeing a news post or wiki page about it, and I was quite excited. It looks like the best (only) way to make interactive, real-time plugins for Inkscape -- and lots of other fun stuff. But I can't find much on it now. Nothing turns up on a news search or a wiki search. One thing I'm thinking of is trying to write the PixelSnap plugin to be more real-time. - Bryan

Missing file on make command

Hi everyone, on revision 9020, before 'make' or 'make clean' can run, it stops and says it need the file 'm4/ink_svn_snapshot_build.m4' (with the 'SVN' on the filename). If I switch the 'svn' to 'bzr', it gives me the same error, saying it needs the 'm4/ink_bzr_snapshot_build.m4'. I could fix the problem and run 'make' by copying the file and renaming it to m4/ink_bzr_snapshot_build.m4, so, there's a file somewhere needing an update :) Thanks! -- Karlisson M. I know there is experimental perspective_path live effect which also works with perspective, but when I tried it, it appeared that it works in some different way - it does not use bounding rectangle to setup perspective, but relies on object resize/movements instead, so this is not what I need exactly. I also looked at the perspective.py code, but it seems that python extensions work in a bit different way than live effects, so I could not neither reuse it as is, nor understand its formula basing on source code without comments. thank's Anton

Hello, I'm trying to write a new live effect which would move original path points to new locations. I have taken lpe-envelope.cpp for the base and write my code inside Geom::Piecewise<Geom::D2<Geom::SBasis> > LPEPerspective::doEffect_pwd2 (Geom::Piecewise<Geom::D2<Geom::SBasis> > const & pwd2_in) so, I receive Piecewise<D2<SBasis> > at the input and want to return generated object Piecewise<D2<SBasis> > at the output, which would contain all orinal pwd2_in points, but with new coordinates. Generally I did not have problems with my algorithm and I have an array of Point objects, but now when I want to put them back to Piecewise<D2<SBasis> > array, the result does not have the required quality: It is hard to explain in more details, so would try to put some code I have. Piecewise<D2<SBasis> > output = pwd2_in; // this gives me a path with same number of nodes as the original one then I go though all points in the path and try to set new location for each point for (unsigned i = 0; i < pwd2_in.segs.size(); i++){ Point target_point = XXX; // calc new value for current point output[i][0][0][0] = target_point[0]; // set value for x output[i][1][0][0] = target_point[1]; // set value for y } return output; With code which works in this way the transformation converted any the object to invisible phantome (the selection showed its area with nothing inside, but when remove the selection it is not possible to select object again, also the "edit points" did not show any objects) - in short, the result was broken. Bended curves became straight lines 2. I have problems with objects consisting of multiple paths Actually, the 1st point only shows itself when I try to deform such object as symbol '3' (converted to path) - after deforming its shape looks like original, but consists of straight lines; though when I deform a simple triangle with one rib curved,the curve does not disappear, but did not test much though with this deffect. The 2nd problem for now is more important - it is visible after deforming symbol '4' - when it is converted to path, it consists of 2 unconnected path objects, and after my deforming, those 2 paths become connected at some point. This is definitely happens because I set incorrect values to SBasis[0][1] and actually I would prefer not to play with SBasis object by hands and to do my task in some other more reliable way, but for now I could not find anything relevant in the documentation. thank's

Devlibs in Launchpad?

Can I put the Windows devlibs in a Launchpad project? (not in lp:inkscape, but in a separate project like lp:inkscape-windows-devlibs) I have successfully compiled Inkscape on both Linux and Windows using Waf, but there are 2 or 3 minor changes I need to make to the Windows devlibs. Warning cleanup of hash-iness

Well... it looks like Krzysztof found us a nice, tricky problem in regards to the whole hash_map/unordered_list mess. What he has been tripped up by is one of those ugly problems with no simple solutions. First, we have legacy code that is using a gcc extension. Not so good. Next the replacement has problems on many systems. So we don't have a tidy solution. General questions for any thing with warnings, etc. * Are the warnings critical? That is, do they indicate some immediate risk/failure? If so, then we should address them sooner * Do we need to be using it? That is, are there any alternatives to the code creating warnings? Things such as vector instead of list, map instead of hash_map, etc. * Can we encapsulate it? That is, do we need to leave things in .h files that other things include, or can they be moved inside specific files? * Is there a clean way to fix at least some of the warnings? For some, this may be as simple as using an explicit variable instead of a temporary. In this case there appears not to be * Is it cross-platform? Remember, we need to keep Inkscape compatible with multiple platforms, including MS Windows, Linux, OS X, BSD, Solaris, etc. I'll try to follow up on a few of these points.

However: - PLEASE describe your changes in Release Notes - I think it would be even more useful to have the ability to put two or more toolbars on the same horizontal or vertical strip, next to each other. Will your refactoring allow for that? - I assume the now-vertical snapping toolbar is more of a demonstration - I really don't see much reason to single it out for vertical placement? - Still, I couldn't re-attach the snapping toolbar into a horizontal position anywhere. It's either its original vertical position at the right, or floating. And re-attaching it to the original position is also quite difficult - the magnetic zone is very small. Can you affect this or is this unfixable in GTK? - Will you be able to block standalone floating state for toolbars? My previous query was somehow sidetracked, so here it is again: - Can anyone give rationale for "Print colors preview" being in Display modes? If not I will remove it from there, as I explained it looks very out of place next to Outline and No filters. Also: - We also have "Color-managed view" in the same menu. Duplicate? If they are genuinely different, please name them to better reflect this difference, and place both in an appropriate submenu of View. Otherwise, merge them. And: - We again have two Input Devices commands. Can we finally decide one way or the other? Does the new one fully work? If so delete the old one, otherwise hide the new until it is ready. Hello all Today I have implemented snapping of nodes, so the new node tool should be ready to go into trunk. As a reminder, here is the status table: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/GSoC2009_Node_Tool_Rewrite There are still some minor issues with snapping: 1. Nodes do not snap to unselected segments of selected paths. 2. Nodes do not snap to selected shapes. They will be fixed once I refactor the event context / tool hierarchy, which I plan to do before this year's GSoC. Now I have a few remarks / questions about the behavior: 1. There is an RFE: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/321150 The proposed is like the new node tool's join action, but with a distance threshold. Implementing this should be easy, but I don't know how to present it in the UI. Ideas, anyone? 2. Releasing the mouse button causes the point to immediately snap, even if the snap delay has not expired. For me, this unexpected and very annoying: I have to turn off snapping to make a non-snapped movement. If this feature was removed, I could comfortably make both snapped and non-snapped movements with snapping enabled. Currently I disabled snapping on mouse button release. 3. When a point snaps to a path, it should remain snapped to it until the pointer wanders outside the snap distance. This would allow me to adjust the point's position on a path it snapped to, without waiting for the snap delay to expire every time. Same behavior for snapping to nodes, corenrs, etc. (the point remains snapped until I move the mouse pointer out of the snapping range). What do you think? 4. The method to switch to the transform handles to rotation mode is very non-obvious. Currently it is Shift+R. To be consistent with the selector, the method to switch to rotation mode should be to click on a selected node, but this might become annoying quickly - the old behavior is to select only the clicked node in this case. I think the second behavior is acceptable if it only works when transform handles are shown, and the handles can be toggled using a button on the controls bar (preferably the first one). Hey all, I made the first commit on LP after our trunk branch was established and it went smoothly. So, everyone, feel free to go to town! As a side thought, since 0.48 will be maintained for a bit while 0.49 is under development. What do people think about our use of LP and how we use Fix Released rather than Fix Committed... are people game to perhaps try using Fix Committed (and target them for 0.48 when doing so) for this cycle? If we properly use committed and mark where it will be available, we can then just script it to change to released when it really is (I think it will be nicer for users). Just a thought. NEW: remove boost::optional warnings

Hello I put in some extra code in configure.ac to turn off strict aliasing warnings when boost::optional emits a lot of them. It tries to compile a short snippet using boost::optional with -Werror=strict-aliasing, and if it fails, it adds -Wno-strict-aliasing to CXXFLAGS. It might be a bit unsafe, because we won't see aliasing warnings from things other than boost::optional, but on the other hand the legitimate warnings that can highlight real problems won't be crowded out by those spurious warnings we can't fix Relevant mail from the Boost mailing list. http://lists.boost.org/Archives/boost/2009/05/151577.php And the relevant quote. Inkscape 0.48 status and proposed release plan

Hey All! Are there any larger features people are planning on still for this cycle that aren't well known? I know of the following still outstanding: *Krzysztof's new Node Tool *Soren's DBUS work (provided Ted is able to do his magic on it) *JonCruz's Adaptive UI work I assume all kinds of smaller, less intrusive things are still on their way. However, I just want to make sure we keep track of the big things to keep this cycle tight and under control. Proposed release plan: Mid-February for Chill Beginning of March Frost (Bug Hunt begins) End of March for Feature Freeze End of April for Hard Freeze Sometime in May for Branch & Release I am planning on maintaining branches to patch in bug fixes for point releases this time. So we most likely will not do a bug hunt goal of 500 this time if things don't break badly (perhaps 300 if we're in decent shape, which makes the proposed plan feasible). Cheers, Josh

Objects ("patterns") along path - pathscatter extension

Hi, background: I want to model some room with rows of chairs, not necessarily along straight lines however. Furthermore, I want to be able to access each chair from python, in order to change appearance depending on status in a reservation system. Thus, I have been looking into an "create objects along path" functionality, and found the pathscatter ("Generate from Path/Pattern along Path") extension, plus some "path effect" which I could not get to work and did not find any documentation on. I also had a lot of problems with the pathscatter extension, which I would like to discuss with you and possibly provide fixes for at least some of them. (I am an experienced programmer, in particular with python, but not very familiar with inkscapes code or even GUI yet.) First, my impression was that the extension is slow (I think there's a lot of potential for improvements, since it looks like a straightforward but not very efficient python implementation) and not very well integrated into the GUI, which is probably a typical problem with scripted extensions (I have experience with Gimp's script-fu stuff). For instance: 1. The menu has no accelerators, which makes it inconvenient to start without using the mouse. 2. It has an apply and a close button, but the apply button does not close the dialog, although the only sensible (actually: possible) action after it is close, since it modifies the selection, and the dialog is modal. 3. The dialog is modal, but does not check whether its preconditions (two objects selected) are fulfilled, so you end up making settings, getting an error message on "apply", need to close, fix the selection, and re-open it again (suffering from 1 again). 4. Also, there does not seem to be any good documentation or even help within the program (for instance: icons, tooltips or "whats this" texts, ...); the best information I found was the python comments at the top of pathscatter.py, which should probably be at least put up on some wiki page. Speaking of preconditions, it took me more than an hour to understand how to use the extension, simply because I tried it only with a rectangle as pattern. The results were incredibly... wrong. That's because the extension seems to work only with paths (that is - circles seem to work) - this could surely be improved either by a) allowing rectangles, which should be possible at least in the "snake" mode, or by b) automatically converting other objects into paths. Actually, my plan would be to implement both a+b, since I then realized that with just b) (which is probably the easiest to implement) I have yet another problem: in the "repeated" mode, I am still getting only a single path as result, which contains several path components. For my use case, I really need separate objects, in order to be able to differently style the chairs. The alternatives are hardcoded at the moment, but to see that just hit widgets/toolbox.cpp and uncomment: //#define ENABLE_TASK_SUPPORT 1 I've left that defined out for the moment in case the other cleanup did not fix the 64-bit issues. If someone can check that, it would be very helpful.

I get this warning everywhere an OptRect is used. For example: SPItem *item; Geom::OptRect r = item->getBounds(sp_item_i2doc_affine(item)); if (r) { Geom::Point p = r->min(); //... will give the warning "./2geom/interval.h:82: warning: dereferencing pointer ‘<anonymous>’ does break strict-aliasing rules". To fix this, shouldn't getBounds return optional<Geom::Rect>? Making an OptRect class seems the wrong use of boost::optional. To remove OptRect: isEmpty() becomes "if (optional<Rect> r)". unionWith(OptRect const &b) becomes another method in Geom::Rect, unionWith(optional<Rect> b). Getting an Inkscape generated PDF in CMYK

Hello everyone, I have a colour document I want to get printed by a print shop. It is a monochrome (shades of the same hue with different lightness/saturation, basically all brown) fully vector document. Currently I have the SVG exported in PDF. The print shops want a CMYK PDF, as expected. They don't seem too smart (insist on using photoshop on the PDF, don't pay much attention to the superposition of recto and verso, etc.) so I would like to do as much as possible myself. However, even with a CMYK document I guess they would still need to do a CMYK to CMYK conversion between my CMYK profile and the one of their printer. Would this be any better than going straight from my RGB to their CMYK? If I do need to convert in CMYK, I explored the possibilities. The SVG does not import correctly in Scribus so this is out of the question. I have Adobe Acrobat, which looks like it can do the conversion on the PDF. I am just not sure what it assumes as a starting colour space, if any. What would the knowledgeable people on this list advise as a workflow to get an Inkscape generated PDF in CMYK? As a related note, what is the advised workflow within Inkscape? I have a display and proofing profiles set in the preferences (NB: Jon, does the "Retrieve profile from display" works on Mac? It does not inactivate the drop down menu when checked at least, while it looks like it should.). My understanding of the 0.46 release notes is that as soon as a display profile is set, it is used, and clicking the indicator at the bottom-right corner turns soft proofing on, using the specified proofing profile. Am I right? What part of all this is currently retained in the SVG? in the PDF? Sorry for the numerous questions. I would like to get this one right. Thanks in advance, JiHO --- http://maururu.net

"Print colors"?

I just noticed this new view mode and dialog. Guys, if you do anything remotely as newsworthy as this, PLEASE describe it in Release notes AND post to devel list to discuss. That said, I'm really not sure it's a good idea to make this a view mode, next to Outline and No filters. The modes are there primarily for speed, but this one has entirely different goals. I've never seen this implemented like that in other programs and I think it's for a reason. If you're interested in print preview, just set it up once, in a dialog/tab of its own. For those 95% users who don't need it, it will just make view modes much harder to figure out. As for the dialog, apart from the fact that it shouldn't be called from view modes submenu, it really looks strange with its 4 buttons and nothing else. Is it supposed to be that way? Hello Here are some remarks about the spray tool that are not related to its UI. Major issues: 1. The tool is very slow in single path mode - it updates XML after adding each object. XML should be updated only when the mouse is released, like in the node tool. 2. Single path mode uses sp_selected_path_union, which spams the undo stack with union operations and destroys selection. Ideally, 2Geom or livarot functions should be used directly, and if that's not possible, sp_selected_path_union_skip_undo. 3. Undo doesn't work correctly for single path mode - Ctrl+Z undoes only one sprayed copy. Less important issues: 4. Clones are created by creating XML nodes directly. Shouldn't the SP layer be used instead? 5. Cryptic pref names like "doo", "doh". 6. sp_spray_recursive has lots of parameters. 7. spray-context.cpp:554 is a crucial formula that is unreadable and undocumented. 8. Indentation in sp_spray_context_root_handler is, mildly put, unorthodox. 9. get_dilate_radius, get_path_force, get_path_mean, etc. - I don't like this. 10. random_position - data passed by non-const reference to a function that doesn't modify it. I agree in principal, but I can't say that a function being "fundamental" matters as much as adding versatility to a tool, which in the end does what we want to do... empower the user. I think we should hang on to it until our nightly build situation gets sorted. The best way to figure out if it's truly valuable is to get feedback from users. I haven't fully tested the functionality yet, but here are some comments on the UI. Sorry for the terseness - I do find the tool valuable, but the UI really needs some work. * The tool icon is horrible and very out of the line with the default tool icons. The Tweak icon is not stellar either. Can some talented artist suggest a replacement? * "Population" is unclear. Its tooltip does not really help. "This setting adjusts" is superfluous, just delete it, but then what remains is still confusing: "the number of items sprayed" - total number? Per click? Per mile? Per what? What does the percentage represent? Please rethink this. * "The mean of the spray action" is impossible to understand. Mean what? * "SD" is very techy, and while the tooltip expands it as "standard deviation", it is still confusing. Standard deviation of what value? Can you explain it in terms understandable to someone who has no math training and has no idea of what SD is. * The button "Some options for the spray" is a bad idea, as is the dialog it opens. We don't have separate dialogs for tool options. Each tool may have some often-used controls on the controls bar, plus some rarely-used settings on its page in Inkscape Preferences. Please try to redistribute the dialog controls between these two locations. E.g. I don't think many people will ever change the distribution from Gaussian to uniform - this choice can be moved to Preferences. The controls bar can accommodate more than you have there now - if something does not fit it will be placed in an automatic menu, so just move the least used controls to the right (but preserving some logical grouping, of course). You may also try to combine some of the options into higher-level, coarser but more user-friendly preset-like options, such as a single "Scale randomization" slider instead of min/max values. (And for cursor, the Width value seems a duplicate of the controls bar's Width slider.) Code-wise, the file spray-option.cpp contains some leftover bits from Alignment dialog (e.g. "remove overlaps" undo comment - and why do you need to make undo commit at all in this dialog?!) and some French comments that need to be translated. -- bulia byak Inkscape. Hi, all! I've been busy with other things for the last 7 months, but I want to make up for it somewhat. Sorry! I've been told that the "devlibs" bundle on Modevia seriously needs updating, so I will start doing that with what people need, and what they agree upon. After adding msvcr80.dll to the devlibs, I was told that Python's libs need updating in general. We have been wanting to use Python 2.6 for over a year now, but a couple of the dependencies, (lxml and numpy) have held us back. I looked at their project pages, and it appears that there are 2.6-usable win32 binary builds available for them. So, the question is: is everyone comfortable with updating Python to 2.6? It's the version 'at the precipice.' Being the last version before 3.0, there is some expectation of permanence. Issue with inkscape on FreeBSD

Hi list, I'm having a serious issue with inkscape on FreeBSD -current. I'm using the port available for FreeBSD and even a forced reinstall of it doesn't fix the problem. The maintainer of the port suggested to report the problem through this list. The issue is quite simple to express: adding a layer to any opened file freezes inkscape. I can open any svg file without a trouble, and a file can contain layers, they are perfectly displayed. I can also hide any of the layers of a document, or rename a layer, change the order of layers, without problem. Only creating a new layer (or duplicating the current layer) is impossible, and leads to a freeze. Tracing the process (using truss on FreeBSD) doesn't show anything once the process is frozen. If there is anything else I could do please let me know. Does such an issue speak to anyone here? Merry Christmas all gb

Hello, I'm attempting to write a patch that adds a margin when setting page size through the "Fit page to selection" button in document properties. I've already added the ui elements (RegisteredScalarUnit's) for marginTop, marginLeft, etc, but I can't figure out how to get the values to the function that resizes the page. Here's how the page currently gets resized: 1. When clicked, "Fit page to selection" fires src/ui/widget/page-sizer.cpp:487: PageSizer::fire_fit_canvas_to_selection_or_drawing() { Verb *verb = Verb::get( SP_VERB_FIT_CANVAS_TO_SELECTION_OR_DRAWING ); SPAction *action = verb->get_action(dt); sp_action_perform(action, NULL); } 2. sp_action_perform eventually calls src/verbs.cpp:2149: FitCanvasVerb::perform(SPAction *action, void *data, void */*pdata*/) { fit_canvas_to_selection_or_drawing(dt); } where the void *pdata parameter is the second argument from sp_action_perform. 3. This eventually calls src/document.cpp:601: SPDocument::fitToRect(Geom::Rect const &rect) My plan was to add marginTop, marginLeft, etc as parameters to SPDocument::fitToRect, and somehow pass these parameters through the void *data parameter in sp_action_perform. However, all the other calls to sp_action_perform in inkscape set the void *data parameter to NULL, and it looks like the action handler doesn't have any code to call free on the parameter after all the action listeners are serviced. Hi, I'm thinking about creating tool to markup video (select areas containing objects, add tags) for my computer vision algorithms (head tracking, human detection and the like). The core functions of such tool: split video into separate frames, possibility to markup some object by drawing rectangles, circles or other closed contours objects on each frame, play markuped video, interpolate unmarked object coordinates between frames. It is seemed to me, that within inkscape it can be done in the following way: 1. Input extension that "convert" video frames into inkscape layers 2. Toolbar with play/stop buttons that toggle layer visibility to simulate video playback if you catch the idea, can you tell how difficult to implement the tool on inkscape basis? Can someone change the Wiki font from 12px to at least 14px, and adjust other font sizes accordingly? The current size is really hard to read. bzr - keeping the log linear

After the recent months worth of various people's commits becoming sub-revisions of one person's commits, I chatted on #bzr to see if there was a way to avoid this. Incidentally, the branch based workflow shown on the wiki will *cause* this problem, so I'll revise what's written there. Anyway, there is a bzr configuration flag which will prevent changes (other than extensions) to the log, i.e. it would refuse to accept the push which sidelines other people's commits. According to the #bzr people, this would set the flag on lp:inkscape python -c 'import bzrlib.branch as b; b.Branch.open("bzr+ssh://bazaar.launchpad.net/path/to/branch").set_append_revisions_only(True)' (if the user has the required permissions) They also pointed out the current sidelining could be undone, I might see that's involved, but not really sure if it's worth it, seeing there's no real damage. On the issue of linking vs embedding images: can't we just have 2 commands? - Embed an image - Link an image Those who don't understand what Link an image means probably expect the first behaviour anyway. I'm among those who was surprised by the behaviour. I use Inkscape as an image editor first. Even if Inkscape is used to create svg files which were initially destined for webpage content, the difference is inconsistent treatment of similar objects (from casual user POV). For html, there are: - Images (external objects, must be attached separately) - Text (part of the html file) For svg, for the really clueless user, there are: - Graphics - More graphics (just with fewer editing options) This is perhaps a simplistic view, but what do most users know about the subtleties of image objects? There's a whole segment of users out there for which Inkscape is "to create images, like Photoshop, except Inkscape uses vectors, which is like manipulating lines and moving around shapes instead of adding blobs of paint."

Hi all, Who knows what determines the rendering order of the different markers? See https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/478157. Currently, endmarkers are drawn beneath midmarkers, although the code calls sp_marker_show_instance last for endmarkers. Perhaps this has to do with the 'key' that is passed to sp_marker_show_instance? (determines the layer?) Have a look at sp_shape_update_marker_view in sp-shape.cpp. Thanks, Johan

Just a small note on user cases: The lowest common denominator of Joe Schmoe out there (that can be expected to use Inkscape) is probably the Windows user who's only familiar with 2 programs: an internet browser and Microsoft Word. That's it. He's neither a webpage designer nor a raster graphics master. He's the type who (very regretfully) takes 2 MB photos, sends them as is to you by email, and doesn't even know (nor care) that he's doing it wrong (unfortunately, this is also about 90% of the people I've worked with...). Such a person's notion of copy/paste is: - Copy text. Paste in Word file. - Copy image. Paste in Word file. - If the image is modified, delete the original image and paste the new one in. - They don't expect anything they've pasted in to disappear when they move the file around or send it to their family/friends/boss. (and yes, that level of user may come to use Inkscape. I often use Inkscape to do charts for work, it's handy)

Node tool progress

Hello everyone. Good news: there are only three regressions left in the new node tool now. 1. Sculpting (Alt+drag) doesn't work. 2. Snapping nodes doesn't work. 3. Transforming one handle using the keyboard (left/right Ctrl and Alt + various keys) doesn't work Everything else should work like in the old one. I think 1 and 3 are not critical, so the only thing left to fix before the tool is ready for prime time is snapping. Bad news: snapping is a complex feature, particularly because I want to provide it for nodeset transforms. Additionally, there is some code in SnapManager that assumes only one editable path. Hello, (Sorry about the duplicate message - forgot to turn off rich text) I'm attempting to write a patch that adds a margin when setting page size through the "Fit page to selection" button in document properties. I've already added the ui elements (RegisteredScalarUnit's) for marginTop, marginLeft, etc, but I can't figure out how to get the values to the function that resizes the page. Here's how the page currently gets resized: 1. When clicked, "Fit page to selection" fires src/ui/widget/page-sizer.cpp: 487: PageSizer::fire_fit_canvas_to_selection_or_drawing() { Verb *verb = Verb::get( SP_VERB_FIT_CANVAS_TO_SELECTION_OR_DRAWING ); SPAction *action = verb->get_action(dt); sp_action_perform(action, NULL); } 2. sp_action_perform eventually calls src/verbs.cpp:2149: FitCanvasVerb::perform(SPAction *action, void *data, void */*pdata*/) { fit_canvas_to_selection_or_drawing(dt); } where the void *pdata parameter is the second argument from sp_action_perform. 3. This eventually calls src/document.cpp:601: SPDocument::fitToRect(Geom::Rect const &rect) My plan was to add marginTop, marginLeft, etc as parameters to SPDocument::fitToRect, and somehow pass these parameters through the void *data parameter in sp_action_perform. However, all the other calls to sp_action_perform in inkscape set the void *data parameter to NULL, and it looks like the action handler doesn't have any code to call free on the parameter after all the action listeners are serviced. Hello all, jsut wanted to thank all of you developers for creating this amazing piece of software, just made a nice Christmas card (sorry, "season's greetings" card, gotta be PC these days) for my boss with it and he loved it. Anyway, there's this feature request I made long ago and every so often some other guy pipes in with a "me too" and I get a reminder in my email about it. It;s a request to make inkscape remember dialogs window status: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/171579 That is, make dialogs such as layers, paint/stroke, align etc. stay open if I opened them in a previous session. This is really important guys! It's really helpful not to have to open them again whenever you open a file. It doesn't have to be a file-specific feature, it should be global, so once you set up the interface to your liking, it should just stay this way across all documents you open later. Also, the layers dialog always opens very small on my machine (showing maybe 2 layers) and I always have to resize it. I will thank you without end if you decide to implement this on 0.48.

git-bzr?

Hi, does anyone have experience accessing a bzr repository using git (something similar to git-svn for subversion)? I haven't found time so far to dive into bzr, and I'm so much used to my workflow with git that I'd like to keep using it if possible (at least for some time). I saw that there is a git-bzr script (http://github.com/pieter/git-bzr) but it's not maintained any more and I couldn't get it to work with the inkscape repo (by the way, is there an absolute url to access the repository instead of lp:inkscape?). NEW: truncated text indication

When a flowed text is truncated (i.e. the frame is too small for the entire text), the frame is shown red, and the statusbar hint includes [truncated]. You need to resize the frame to see the truncated end of the text. Spay tool UI

Hi there I am currently filling the release notes for the spray, so it may help to use it... To answer Bulia's questions (thanks for feeding back by the way !) : - Mean and SD are the parameters of the gaussian function here. We did not call them otherwise... The "mean" parameter sets the center of the gaussian. If it is set to 0, then it will be the center of the cursor. If you increase the value, the spraying will look more like a circle... The SD sets the width of the gaussian. It is not that techy if you know what a gaussian is. - Population is more like a probability parameter. As it is written in the code, if it is set to 50%, then the item has 50% chance to appear... If anyone has an idea to improve it, please do ! We did not spend much time to think of it. - I don't think the Spray options are that bad. We did not want to overload the toolbar with options, so it seemed natural to us to make it that way. Need to work in color spaces other than RGB

I think we've hit the point where we need to revisit our rendering and such to include more than just RGB. This bug is one example: "Export to TIFF to support CMYKA color" https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/492402 It looks like to be able to solve this case, we would need to be able to have our engine render to four-channel CMYK in order to preserve data. Simply rendering to RGB and then converting to CMYK using LittleCMS won't work, since black ink separation will be lost, etc. Am I seeing this wrong? Also, could we perhaps get away with export by rendering n channels, each being grayscale? Thanks.

Today I'm using it to understand how Inkscape works and what methods are related to a specific work. Mac OS X: Shift- mouse wheel (scroll right/left) doesnt work

Hi everybody, up to now every inkscape version I tried on my Mac OS X 10.4.11 PPC had this annoyance: Scrolling up and down by mouse wheel works nice - zooming by ctrl - mouse wheel as well - but scrolling vertically (right-left) by shift - mouse wheel doesnt work. I wouldn't say that it is broken because it has always been this way. It makes other changes to the path data too; it converts all segments to one or more cubic bezier segments. I'm trying to get the nodes using: p = cubicsuperpath.parsePath(node.get('d')) For a 4 node closed path I am getting 6 sets of coordinates (first handle, node, second handle) returned. Here is an example of a rectangle: [[ [[0.0, 0.0], [0.0, 0.0], [0.0, 0.0]], [[100.0, 0.0], [100.0, 0.0], [100.0, 0.0]], [[100.0, 200.0], [100.0, 200.0], [100.0, 200.0]], [[0.0, 200.0], [0.0, 200.0], [0.0, 200.0]], [[0.0, 0.0], [0.0, 0.0], [0.0, 0.0]], [[0.0, 0.0], [0.0, 0.0], [0.0, 0.0]] ]] Though experimentation, I have discovered these correspond to : [[ Node 1, as the start node ( first handle coords = node coords) Node 2 Node 3 Node 4 Node 1, as the end node (second handle coords = node coords) Node 1, as if it is inline, with the handles correct. ]] Now, if I take exactly the returned list p, and just try setting the path back: node.set('d',cubicsuperpath.formatPath(p)) I end up with a 6 node, open path. And please be sure to file a bug/feature request at http://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/ In the end there will obviously always be cases where Inkscape is too slow, but Inkscape could most definitely be faster in some cases. And just locking/unlocking the layer should (from an intuitive standpoint) NOT cause such a big pause. As you also might know, Poppler's core is considered private, so not API- nor ABI- stable, so your work can break at any time, even on patch releases of Poppler (as you Inkscape developers already experienced). So, my proposal is the following: if possible, join the forces and provide a C++-only (so no GLib nor Qt4, although libxml2 could be considered usable) SvgOutputDev directly in the Poppler core. The benefits would be clear: - single point of development for an SVG export for Poppler - nicely frontend wrapping (poppler-qt4 and poppler-glib) for the SVG export - no more Poppler core usage, less breakages! 0.47 X11 on Mac OS X Tiger - close to success?

Hello friends, with a great effort of ~suv I came to a finished compiling procedure of 0.47 X11 for Tiger. The only not-so-nice thing is that neither the package nor the bin will start.
