[bug tracker] Guideslines for tags?

The new 'cloud' rendering of all tags on <https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/inkscape> shows a total of 287 used tags. Are there any guidelines to follow when adding or renaming tags besides the visible 'official' and 'other' tags of the default interface on <https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape>? Is there a more suitable place to ask/discuss questions like this about the bug tracker and bug triage? tia, ~suv

Today I decided to update my Windows build, stale by about a month, and got a crash on startup :( Recompiled from scratch, removed compiler optimization. Still crash. Debugging showed a very strange thing. There was this method in desktop.h: void registerEditWidget (Inkscape::UI::View::EditWidgetInterface *widget) { _widget = widget; } And it was called just before init with a non-NULL pointer: dtw->desktop = new SPDesktop(); dtw->stub = new SPDesktopWidget::WidgetStub (dtw); dtw->desktop->registerEditWidget (dtw->stub); dtw->desktop->init (namedview, dtw->canvas); but inside init(), _widget was NULL, as if some weird optimization made SPDesktop constructor (which NULLs _widget) fire after the registerEditWidget call instead of before. I have no idea what might be causing this and why it worked before. It might be some quite different but elsewhere that manifests itself in this strange way. Or, my Windows laptop may have become borked in some way. However, to be on the safe side, I removed registerEditWidget() (the above was its only use) and just added the widget parameter to init(). This way it no longer crashes for me. For everyone else this should be a no-op change. Still, I would be curious to hear others' ideas on what might be going on here. -- bulia byak Inkscape. The naming and location of pasted files can be discussed, of course, but you seem to be proposing to change the behavior of something that is common in every program that works with external data (vectorial illustration, page layout, even audio and video editors) because it isn't "intuitive" for new users who didn't read the documentation? It wouldn't be a problem if it is harmless, but changing it brings a lot of problems, as JonCruz pointed out. In my honest oppinion, a switch in the import dialog, a good method for dependency tracking and solving and a better image properties dialog would be the best solution. Dumbing down the program because a part of its users are new to it and didn't read the documentation is shooting to your own foot. An SVG file, as it names stands for, stores VECTOR graphics. If it allows to embed bitmap images, it is an option for cases when it's needed. Links are the proper way to include images, and the most convenient most of the times. Also you're assuming that an SVG file is something that a regular user will send to his friend via email, like a jpeg. Inkscape is a vector illustration program. Its files are comparable to CDR or AI files, that also work with links and embedded images. So I guess it's safe to say that the target public for an application like inkscape isn't a complete newbie that only used MS Paint. By the way, GIMP started to change its focus since a clear target user was defined, and this kind of discussions (if the program is or isn't friendly for the unexperienced users) kinda stopped. If you imported it once, you may still have the original file in your disk. If you simply save it again, you'll end up with the original and the "externalized" image in your disk. Hi: I created a blueprint based on some ideas discussed in https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/172162 It's a specification of an improved image properties dialog that (hopefully) would tackle some annoying aspects of image links management in inkscape. I've received valuable ideas from ~suv and Steren Giannini and the specification is starting to look very good, so I'd like to propose it as a feature for the next version of Inkscape. About image links being confusing for users... Most of the vectorial illustration programas I know use links. Designers at least are pretty used to the images being linked. Anyway, those other programas also include an option on import to link or embed images, so I agree about adding that feature. Where I do not agree is about making embed default. Embedding is handy in a lot of cases and would help newbies, but a serious artists or designers would want to have those images linked, because usually they have to be edited. Keep in mind that a couple of images embedded won't be a problem, but dozens in high resolution can take the svg size too high. There's also a problem: As far as I know, it's impossible atm to convert an embedded image to a linked image without saving it. So if you imported it and it was embedded, when you extract it you'll have two files in your disk. Of course we can (and should) modify the specification to allow re-linking to an existing file as an option along with extract the embedded image. But I think that we should avoid making embedded images default until we can provide that option. And even in that case, I think we should place a preference for changing that default. Gez

vertical toolbars

Hi all, I've found bug/wishlist https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/171663 ... which suggests that work is in progress to allow vertical toolbars. In a MacBookPro, which has very low screen height, one has to disable several toolbars to enlarge the area dedicated to the drawing enoug that it can be used nicely. I added Rok's suggestion to the specification. About its implementation, I agree with Steren's idea: let's use a button for matching original aspect ratio keeping the larger dimension and modifying the smaller. That would be the very useful to solve a very common situation: You imported an image, then you want to crop it (for instance, you have a sponsor logo with a lot of transparent space around and you want to get rid of that empty space and leave the logo only). Thanks for the feedback. Gez. p.s.: Steren, It'd be great if you could mentor a team of students to work on this feature. It can be made in different stages and it doesn't look too complicated to be finished in a short term.

Hi all, Could someone have a look at the testsuite and reprogram it such that (at least when perceptualdiff is used) the results that are marked 'new' are marked 'fail' instead? This is much clearer, and cleans up the daily checks at http://auriga.mine.nu/inkscape/. Thank you very very much! So, We have one blocker left. Apparently some preferences need to be migrated over from 0.46. JonCruz was working on this, but, he just started a new job and doesn't really have the time necessary to finish it. At this point, we need to figure out a list of preferences to see if this really is a blocker issue or what. It makes no sense to hold up the release if no one is going to fix the last problem (we have tons of other issues that we're willing to release with after all). I know of the "recent documents" being one thing that doesn't carry over. What else people? Cheers, Josh

Bug [452568] "rotating line with arrow end doesn't rotate the arrow" <https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/452568> I have little insight into the technical details of markers in SVG 1.1, but from a users POV I am concerned about the differences between 0.46 and 0.47pre in rendering seemingly basic arrowheads. Should this be mentioned more prominently in the release notes or is it a minor detail concerning only a small group of SVG drawings which are either not created with Inkscape or manually edited? Hey All, So, Adib made a patch to address one of the issues that has annoyed many users... saving over a non-writable bitmap type (such as jpg) that they had opened. The patch simply checks to see if we can write the filetype, if not, throws an error message and then proceeds to open a Save As dialog. The problem is that the error message is unclear as it is a standard error message that we have and makes no sense in the context unless you know how our files are handled internally. The message is "No Inkscape extension found to save document (/path/to/file.jpg). This may have been caused by an unknown filename extension." So, the question is, would people be okay with us shipping with the user-unfriendly error message in favor of saving people's data? Yes we could create a custom message for it, but I really don't want to break the string freeze again. After 0.47 is out, we could then make a 0.47.1 branch and have the proper error message that explains what went wrong (obviously adding to trunk as well). Please share your thoughts. Cheers, Josh

Hello friends, I happened to find the inscructions for building an Mac OS X .app package. So I tried to use the osx-app.sh script to build an incscape aqua app in order to share it, but ended up with a message as follows: Directory does not appear to contain the i386 and ppc python modules So I tried to run the script with the -py option, but cannot find out for which python components I do have to look. Nor do I know whether I do have enough python installed; a "sudo port installed" shows: py26-libxml2 @2.6.21_0 (active) python26 @2.6.2_4+darwin (active) I guess the python26 thing is it - but how will the script find the necessary components? Hi, I've attached a patch (tested on Vista and XP) to the following bug report. [Bug #423326] Untranslated file types https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/423326 It fixes some gettext calls in the win32 open/import dialog (i18n fix only). The strings are already translated (they are shared with the linux/mac dialog) and the fix doesn't require an inkscape.pot rebuild. :) It's a low priority bug, but since it affects the UI it would be nice to have it fixed in 0.47. POV-Ray export patch.

Hi, I just filed a bug report for POV-Ray export which is broken in 0.47pre4. It appears to have been broken by a move to lib2geom where the path vector includes an extra closing segment even if the path is already closed (see 2geom/path.h). This resulted in extra lines being written out. In addition, there was a problem that existed in 0.46 where paths created by Text->Path may not have their last point exactly on top of the first point (differing sometimes by 0.0002 px). In this case, POV-Ray considers the path open and skips it. I've attached a patch to the bug report that fixes both problems. I know this is late in the 0.47 release process but as it stands, export to .pov format is useless (POV-Ray fails to process the .pov file due to the extra badly-formatted lines). Adjust kerning from the text&font dialog?

Hello, why is it impossible to adjust text kerning from the font&text dialog? It has the same text so you can put the cursor somewhere or select something without cluttering the drawing with flashing cursor or some other view obscuring stuff. Sadly, the alignment keys do not work in the dialog. There is a more general problem of drawing being obfuscated by selection. For example, if I select an object the dashed selection frame obscures the objects with which I want to align the currently selected object. Thanks Michal

However they have problems building Windows version, e.g. localization support is disabled for some reason. Could anybody please help them with NSIS and the rest of the environment? Python dependencies for extensions on all platforms need common min versions

While the topic raised in the versioning scheme thread mentions a general API version possibly separated from the program version, bug #448285 "lxml version bundled with Inkscape is old" <https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/448285> brings up an issue that could be discussed and solved for 0.47 (especially as 0.47pre4 has just been branched). Could there be a central document on Inkscape.org available for all future extension developers (and package maintainers) that defines the python version and necessary python modules for the current release and lists the minimal versions every Inkscape installation needs to provide for the extension-system out-of-the-box? Or could this be handled entirely by the configure and packaging scripts, which then create an updated 'README.python' document included in the 'share/extensions'? ~suv

Packagers, please package up Pre3 if you have not already done so as a practice run... and honestly, I think it would be safe to plan a release for next week (between Monday the 5th and Friday the 9th), provided packages are available and no new issues arise. Hi, I'm currently translating the wiki index (http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Inkscape) in French. But I don't know how to link it to the other languages indexes (there's no edit link) and to make it the default index when French language is chosen. I've modified /inkscape_web/trunk/includes/localized-fr.inc but it doesn't seem to work. The new French index is http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Inkscape-fr. Could someone help? Hi, Is there still much interest out there in having Inkscape support JavaFX? I fixed some core issues to get things to at least compile/read, etc. However there are still some bugs on specific features not working when exported files are brought into JavaFX-land. It would help things greatly if some users could poke about briefly and enter some Launchpad bugs against Inkscape for individual JavaFX issues. Thanks.

Issues with SVG precision number writing

In fixing bug #399604 I discovered that our writing of numbers with specified precision has a few bugs in it. Given that we've come close to a release without people explicitly noticing I think we are OK for the moment. However we really should look into that and see what we can do as far as fixing proper support for edge cases. If people can take a look at that, it would be quite helpful. There is an appropriate unit test source file in our tree: svg/svg-length-test.h The function that has issues is unsigned int sp_svg_number_write_de( gchar *buf, int bufLen, double val, unsigned int tprec, int min_exp ); Note that it did not used to have that bufLen parameter, and that even at the moment it is unused. I'll be adding a few test cases in there, but if others can also contribute we can stabilize things much quicker. Thanks

Are you using perceptualdiff? There are many 'new' entries in the list. This means that the resulting file is different from the reference when compared byte per byte. But I'd rather see the result of a visual comparison, using perceptualdiff [2]. perceptualdiff "runtests.py --compare-png=perceptualdiff" 2. I'd like to see the svn revision number below the date; so that we know exactly with which Inkscape version the test was done. Again, I'm very happy to see the results updated every day! Inkscape Portable

Hey All, Chris Morgan has submitted a patch for packaging a portable version of inkscape. There is one thing which is additionally distributed with these builds that I feel I should ask the group about. There is a help.html file for the portable version which has a button for donating to support portableapps.com. Attached is an image of the page. Optionally we could otherwise just link to it being hosted on portableapps.com, but it does seem like people would probably be more comfortable if it were officially supplied by the project. Hey guys, I decided to post this as a new topic rather than taking the InkscapeForum.org one further off-topic. I've pretty much finished my theme for the website, and it's available for viewing at http://inkscape.chrismorgan.info/. I'll be setting up content as I get to it (i.e. soon). Other theme submissions are welcome, email them to me and I can set them up there. Josh Andler said he would talk to Ian about getting me Drupal access on inkscape.org - I don't know who Ian is or anything about that, but it could help with testing :-). I'm happy to work with it on my server though, it can be transferred without much trouble. Unless I hear about a inkscape.org-hosted Drupal site very soon I'll just continue working on my copy. If you don't know, I run www.inkscapeforum.com--a relatively successful phpBB forum for Inkscape users. I created the forum because I knew there was demand and at the time I knew I could devote a lot of time to make it successful. But I was never fond of the idea that a single person would have ownership of the data accumulated from the community. I wanted to offer ownership of the forum to Inkscape.org. Ideally this only needs to go as far as knowing that if I were hit by a bus, someone could step in and take over. I don't know how things are ran on the inkscape.org site, but I would be offering the entire setup to be hosted by inkscape.org (if possible). I would happily continue to moderate, and administer the board if appropriate access were given. And I would redirect inkscapeforum.com to the new domain, or change it's name servers. Anyway, discussion open. Would Inkscape.org be interested in adopting the forum? Save As option?

I missed the discussion of this new option but, honestly, I don't understand it from the tooltip and the Release Notes (which I edited some, but still). What is "current working directory"? For an average Windows user this does not make much sense I guess. They just click icons. Can you explain it in more functional terms? The tooltip explains what happens for previously saved or not saved documents. But both these are for this checkbox on, right? What if it is off? -- bulia byak Inkscape. archutil error in win build?

When I try to build the latest svn (22396) under 32-bit windows, I get an error - Make error line 413: executeCommand : could not create process : the system cannot find the file specified. Make error line 413: <staticlib> problem: When I look at the build.xml file, line 413 says - <staticlib command="${archutil}ar crsv" file="${build}/libinkscape.a"> I was going to change the value of archutil but I am not sure what it should be set to? Currently it is set to - <property name="archutil" value=""/> Any ideas? Joshua, release warden, I do not have "the" solution for https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/273767 But I have a fix in post #6 of this issue that might prevent further crashing by range overflow. The other one has a deeper impact in everything so I can not judge how it behaves on the other end. PLs review the first patch and commit. Hi, I build Inkscape from recent SVN and it crashes on startup. Font dialog mis-match

In SVN 27277 (Gentoo Linux) there is still the problem that some font styles are selectable in the dialog box but do not display in the actual text object. To see this in action, one needs a font like Helvetica Neue installed: 1. Select "Thin" as the style; the sample changes to something that looks pretty much like a thin version of the font. 2. Click on "Apply"; the style changes to "Ultra-light", the sample display changes to this new style, as does the actual on-the-page text object. 3. Re-select "Thin"; the example text changes once more to the thin style. 4. Re-apply; the dialog box ignores this, apparently thinking that this is the style already in use. The sample text remains thin but the text object is not changed. 5. Close dialog. 6. Re-open the dialog (keeping the text object selected); the style is listed as "Ultra-Light" but we appear to be back at the state represented by point 3, not that represented by step 1. That's about all I've got and it is font-dependant in that the styles available differ from font to font, so for Futura the issue shows up for the style Medium (which changes to Bold on application), while Frutiger switches Ultra-heavy to just plain Heavy. The really odd bit is that the font dialog has no obvious problem displaying these styles. TWW

There are still things to do in the tutorials (but I consider that they are now frozen) and the interface (due to very recent string changes in knotholder and extensions), and some translators are really eager to finish it soon... Mac OS X: Inkscape crashes after aqua version compiled?

Hello, last two days I can no longer make my inkscape X11 run. I compiled an inkscape aqua, which runs quite nice, but now when launching inkscape X11 - bang! - I'm quite sure I hat some days with a co-existance of both versions - maybe it occurred since the update to macports 1.8.1 ? Did inkscape aqua change preferences which make the X11 version crash now? I do attach the crashreporter log and will be happy to proviede further information. Paths and file extensions in save dialogs

Hi all, as of rev. 22010 the "Save as ..." and "Save a copy ..." dialogs should now remember the last used directories and file extensions independently of each other (this closes at least LP #184655, #386292, and perhaps even a few more, I haven't checked yet). It took me a while to understand how the different OS-specific file dialogs are implemented, and I hope I got it right. But please test extensively and let me know if there are any problems. This particularly applies to Windows users since I cannot test the changes there. Thanks, Max P.S.: I believe the export dialog doesn't remember its own path yet althouth I modified some parts in the corresponding source files, too. But it just occurred to me that there is an #ifdef in file.cpp to choose between different types of export dialogs, so I probably modified the wrong part. Anyway, my question is: Is it desired to store the path in the Export dialog at all, at least for the Page and Drawing tabs?

Hello! I'm new to the community, and am excited to contribute what I can. I am a set desigener by training and trade, and not a programmer, but I am training my self in that regard. I'm coming from a place of frustration: My industry has a rich tradition of hand drafting and hand rendering which is gradually adobting the use of software in preference to water color etc. We are spending WAY to much money on software wich never does what we need it to do in the first place. I'm hoping to contribute what I can to bring the tradition ofhand rendering and drafting of set design to this project. I'm really thrilled about being able to see a problem, work on a solution and then get it out there for others. I am of course going to do all the searching I can do to find if other projects along these lines are in progress, but I've listed a few I'm interested in. If you know people working on them already, would you mind pointing me towards them? DXF - SVG Conversion tools DWG - SVG Conversion tools MCD - SVG Conversion tools Saving user defined paper sizes either to the system memory or a separate user preference file. Template system. Work space / Layout space system [using viewing areas to view geometry in the workspace / other files in a layout and generating a SVG to reflect either that reality or a vector representation of the result. Drawing to Scale Drawing in full and adjusting annotation to represent the scale relative to the 'printed' product Exploring database links to SVG geometry to allow dynamic update from SVG -> Database and Database -> SVG [native system for adjusting the parameters of an object and having those chagnes reflected in the visual aspects of the object.] Nothing too ambitious... It's already fixed. A patch to fix snapping of bitmap pixels to grids made this happen, but that patch was already reverted and it's fixed. I reported the bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/437384. You should try with a newer build. Gez.

Hello all, My name is Jens Persson and I've been using Inkscape a lot the last three years, both on PC and Mac, mainly for mobile application GUI design, and I'm always waiting for the next release. The 0.47pre3 for Leopard suddenly doesn't do any interpolation of imported bitmap images any more, so I had to switch back to 0.47pre2. Can anyone else confirm this problem and if it is being dealt with? (e.g. try rotating an imported png image, jaggy nearest neighbour no matter what you set the "Oversample bitmap" to). [NEW] Waf build

Hello all I just managed to build Inkscape using Waf as the build system. Although the documentation of Waf isn't complete and writing the scripts involved some guesswork and reading the source, it made a lot of things very easy when compared to Autotools or CMake (for example, the SVN revision feature). Currently it works for Linux builds, but supporting Windows and OSX only requires some tweaking. It doesn't do anything beyond building yet (like installation, updating translation templates, generating manpages and the like), but I'm working on it. URI is EVIL!!!

Hi, Just wanted to point out that technically URI classes are not usable for our assets. For example, it is tempting to use an URI to resolve an asset to the base document path. The problem is that a URI according to the RFC's is not usable for file paths. Glib and friends properly implement URI, therefore we can't use them for files. In the future we can probably use IRI's or our own classes for references and assets, etc. However URI's are not usable. I'm pointing this out since we are just about to release, but I tracked down a critical bug to being caused by this. In the near term we should search through the codebase for improper uses of URI classes. The tricky thing is that they will appear to function since common path names are "safe." However as soon as unexpected characters come in (like ampersands), all bets are off. To summarize: If we are linking something that is represented by a file (images, color profiles, etc.) can't be processed with a URI class or URI functions. It will work for simple cases, but not all.

The reason it creates two documents is to make sure functions work even if they are called on an inactive document. This can be changed if you don't want to be opening lots of extra windows. There are 15 "new" results in the rendering tests, if anyone could help judge the outcomes that would be great (I'm most definitely not getting around to it until somewhere in November). Fixed in r22330. It broke because I moved the pages around a bit, and wasn't aware such a thing existed. I also changed it to use w3m (it is installed by default on Debian and Ubuntu systems, while lynx must be installed manually). Anyway, it is an ugly hack and should be replaced by something more robust in the future. Hello, As of this time, no one that I am aware of is actively working on multipage support. Unless someone surprises us after 0.47 is released, I wouldn't expect it to be worked on until 0.49 at the soonest, and even this is dependent on someone really having an itch to scratch to get it implemented. Sorry that I can't give any real estimate on it, but that's just due to not knowing of anyone working on it (or planning to). Perhaps we could suggest it as a summer of code project for a student or two to work on next year (provided that Google does SoC again and that we're accepted). Thank you! -=-=- Everyone else, This is the new thread to bring up any remaining blocker bugs, as it seems like almost all have been addressed. Let's also not forget, anything that can be lived with for a short period should not be considered a blocker. Hi there, I did some of the german translations for the upcoming release. There is a little issue, though. I would like to translate the about screen, which was drawn by "sko", but I have no idea what font is used there and how to apply the fancy shadow effect beneath "Draw freely". So, could anyone forward my email to the artist who created this very nice graphic? Or could you point me to where I might find his email adress? That would be great! Fill calligraphy outlined shapes automatically

Hi everyone, I'd like to use the calligraphy tool to draw outlines for a shape, and want to fill the initially transparent interior of that outline with a different color. The only solution I've found so far is to apply the "break apart" command, then select the inner shape and change its color manually. That's a lot of steps, which stops the flow of drawing. I've already found this extension which tries to solve the problem: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/CalligraphedOutlineFill To lessen the number of manual steps, I'd like to automatically apply some similar logic after each calligraphy stroke, so that a calligraphy outline's inner shape can be filled immediately if it's drawn in one stroke. I think the following steps might suffice: * After a calligraphy brush stroke, apply "break apart" to the resulting object. * If the result is only one shape, then the calligraphy path isn't closed. * If there are several shapes, the one with the largest bounding box is the outline, all others are enclosed inner shapes and are filled in a different color. You could even maintain a history of successive calligraphy strokes, or search the object stack, until the "break apart" command produces more than one shape. My questions: * Is it somehow possible to automatically execute an extension like that after each calligraphy stroke? * Or is there a way to code this into Inkscape itself? * If yes, what would be the API calls for "break apart", and where would I have to insert that code to get it executed after a completed clligraphy stroke? * Is there maybe a similar extension or drawing tool feature that I could use as a model? Hyphenation in Inkscape

Hello, This is regarding a wishlist bug reported here; https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/171140 I am writing an extension for hyphenating the text when it is justified. I have the first version ready to use for both English and Malayalam(ml_IN) and tested in Inkscape 0.46 in Debian Sid. It is available for testing here: http://thottingal.in/projects/inkscape/inkscape-hyphenation.zip It is on top of the python hyphenation code written by Wilbert Berendsen. The hyphenation rules, also called as patterns is TeX or Openoffice itself. There are a few more changes need to be done: a) Making the extension language independent: Loading all the patterns from a directory while initializing? Or is it okey to ask user to select the language? As of now I am doing a unicode range checking to differentiate between Malayalam and English. but it will be buggy for other languages. b) On GNU/Linux platforms can we point to the default hyphenation patterns directory of openoffice? Since release is nearing, let's talk 0.48 and beyond...

Hey All, Kinda lengthy, but, please read and respond if you intend to be involved in the upcoming releases. In numerous off-list discussions with a handful of devs and contributors it seems like there is a favored route for the upcoming releases. Essentially, make 0.47 "good enough" (avoid point releases if possible). Have a short dev cycle for 0.48 which needs to be pretty solid (even if made so over time by point releases... I will commit to continuing a couple of those). Then we go for another long-ish refactoring cycle for 0.49. For 0.48 the thought is to... move to a DVCS before any code changes are made in trunk. This needs to be discussed and resolved ASAP, svn is not good enough for our needs any longer, period. Then, we drop in this year's SoC work, the spray tool, any big things that are far enough along in people's working copies, polish up everything and fix all new issues discovered from 0.47... if we're lucky, further text tool work could make it in too. Additionally, if we could get cairo work in a branch (under said DVCS) during this cycle, it would be excellent to possibly get something to drop in for the 0.49 dev cycle... this is part of why the stability and functionality of this release is critical (trunk may need to have issues for a bit after 0.48 drops). For 0.49 the thought is to attempt to ditch our copy of gdl in favor of submitting the necessary bits upstream and using it as a proper library. It has been said before, it would be really excellent if we could have 2geom be broken out and used as a proper library. I understand the general "it's an experiment" and "we can't promise a stable api" issues, but, the cord needs to be cut at sometime and I think this is fair notice. Also, this is how gimp is being developed with babl and gegl... so it is doable and a non-issue (I use unstable gimp too, so I know from experience of having to update them both when I want to update gimp). Any objections or concerns that people feel the need to voice? Anything that other people would like to see during these releases? Cheers, Josh

Hi, In preparing for SVG Open, I'm trying to come up with a new single- page flyer that can be printed out and given away at conferences and such to help people get an idea what Inkscape is and what it can do to help them. One key part of this is to point out some general usages to which Inkscape can be put. If we can present in one spot how different uses are all served, we might be able to gain interest of people who otherwise would have overlooked the product. For example, some software engineer looking to do some quick UML sketches might only see some Inkscape artwork and think "Oh, I don't need to draw pictures, better go find something else." We then miss out on another potential user. And when we loose a potential user we also lose another potential *contributor*. To help hash this out I have started a wiki page for jotting things down: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Marketing_Scratchpad Please take a look and see if you might be able to add a bit. Edit some info, add a missing usage/segment, etc. The more information we can gather, the better we can refine and then use it. Oh, and for the flyer itself, we are initially targeting a simple design that can fit on a single page. It may be printed one-sided or perhaps double-sided. So the design will include a primary page and a supplemental page. The primary page will be done so that it is a stand- alone product. The supplemental page will be the optional second side for when the flyer is printed double-sided. We also want to design it so that it is effective when printed out in black and white and also when it is printed out in color.

Hey All, A few days have passed, the discussion has died down, and here is where we stand. bzr: 6 git: 3 Two of the three git votes had also mentioned that it didn't really matter much to them in the end, they would just prefer what they were familiar with. Additionally, most of the bzr voting folks have used git quite a bit as well, and it doesn't seem to be the same coming from the other side. With that, I think that Bazaar is the safe choice. Any flat out objections? Can we start to look at where we might want to host now? At this point it seems like Launchpad is the obvious choice so we could benefit from the integration with our bug tracker there. Any other suggestions or concerns? Cheers, Josh

I don't think Max was saying that, when you are on a personal branch, you might commit something that you later discover breaks Inkscape. Git allows you to reorganize/rework your commits before they are pushed, so that each of your commits leaves Inkscape working. That way, when you merge back in trunk, all revisions are valid. I am not sure whether this is specific to git or a general behaviour, but in git, when you merge back a branch, you see its full history in the trunk, not just the merge commit. For example, let say your history is something like (best viewed with a fixed width font): master: A--B-------C-------D-- \ / branch: \--A'---B'--/ A,B,C are commits on the master (=trunk); A',B' are commits on the branch; D is your merge commit. After the merge, "git log" on the trunk will show: D B' C A' B A You get all the commits, in chronological order, *including* those on the branch. So you don't "only look at the history of the trunk". Of course git keeps a memory of what was on the branch and what was on the master but you still see everything from the master. This is a reason why it is sometimes interesting to rework your branch history before a merge. I don't know whether this is a feature or a drawback, but this is the way (I think) it works. But, that wasn't the issue that Bulia was referring to :) I was able to work with the bzr-svn developers to get the necessary fixes in so that it would import the Inkscape repository even with the SVK-isms in it. --Ted

I assure you that I go on experimental tangent branches regularly, that's simply the kind of person that I am. The histories there are still important even though you'd never see them unless you started really delving into the revision history to see each commit. When I merge it into main is when I write a more useful message about what really changed, as most people only look at the history of trunk anyway. --Ted

I did my research. I stand corrected. The new operating system from Microsoft after Vista is not called System 7. They call it Windows 7. We are very interested in learning whether InkScape and GIMP will provide appropriate vector and raster information to our Windows compatible printer type driver for job processing on different types of machines. Hi, Could anybody please explain how one could get Tango icons back? The last thing I heard is that one should be using Tango icons on system level to get them in Inkscape. Well, I switched to Tango theme in GNOME prefs and I still see the default icon theme. I don't mean to ask for a new feature this close to releasing, but for future - just how difficult would it be to add a simple switcher in Preferences and get rid of this brain damage forever? :) Alexandre
